So it began. The beginning of the end of Mitsuoki's current life, as well as the precursor to the beginning of his next. He had gone the distance. He had killed all of the enemies that there was to kill, learned all the skills that his zanpakuto spirits wanted him to learn, and reached a point where his spirits were ready to admit that he was powerful enough to move to the next step. Mitsuoki had been able to manifest his zanpakuto spirits in the physical world for quite some time, though, no one in the kidoshu knew how long that was. No member of the kido corps even knew that he was capable of using a shikai let alone being ready to move on to bankai. Mitsuoki had taken a week's reprieve, stating in his memo that he was feeling ill from constantly working and would spend some time in the Rukongai, District Sixty Eight, while he recovered. It was known that Mitsuoki was a very busy man and that he performed as much work as possible, without sacrificing quality, while on duty. The times that he was supposed to get a break from it all had been spent helping other members of the kido corps with their duties, helping them study, and even develop a few of his own kido.
Anyone who visited the Sixty Eight district of the Rukongai would find that Mitsuoki was not present. His spiritual pressure would be very strong in the area, but, his physical being would be absent. Asking the souls within the small village he frequented would yield the same answer from everyone, though, none of them in the exact same words. Everyone would claim that Mitsuoki had been there recently, but he had left in order to handle some business in one of the other villages nearby. They would all say that he was heading north east. It would be the same story every day; and, for those diligent enough to visit the village to the north east, they would be told by the guard that they saw a soul reaper pass through but he was gone as fast as he came, and seemed to be in a pretty big rush. One guard would claim that Mitsuoki was trying to master his stepping abilities, bringing it to a point where he could go for ridiculous distances or use it in very rapid succession. Of course, no matter how long someone waited for him to show up or pass by, Mitsuoki would never be there at any point at all, or so it would seem.
In the training crater, Mitsuoki had been sitting with his legs crossed in the very middle, eyes closed, and his zanpakuto in their shikai form rested across the gap in his legs. He was breathing steadily, focusing on the world around him as well as the flow of energy within him. He had focused on everything he had been through thus far. How he originated from a single being with no memory at all and, with the help of a soul reaper, made his way to the sixty eighth rukon district. He developed spiritual pressure that he was unable to control and eventually went to find a place that would help with his problem, though, at the time he did not know exactly what that problem was. He met a girl who would eventually become his teacher, his training partner, his best friend, and after that, she would become his lover and his entire world. He focused on the things that happened after that, from the time that Haruka died and how he kept fighting, kept improving. Lastly, he focused on the reasons that he did so. Constantly trying to be Haruka's equal but always finding a way that he fell short.
He let out a slow breath while thinking about how he still felt like he was inferior to her, and a light chime eminated from his zanpakuto. They gave off a gentle glow that faded before the two spirits appeared standing in front of Mitsuoki. The first was a young woman with blonde hair that was extremely long, dangling down to her rear end. Atop her head was a red ribbon tied in the exact middle of her crown. She had magenta eyes and rosey cheeks, as well as an extremely friendly expression on her pale face. Her attire was a white dress with a great deal of frills. Pink lines accented the shoulders and over that dress she wore a pink vest that had a plaid pattern on it. For whatever reason, the zanpakuto spirit also wore a matching tie to go with the ensamble. On her feet were a pair of matching slippers with stockings that blended well with her skin tone and ran all the way up to her knees. This spirit was named Akatsuki, which translated to 'Dawn' and she was a being that seemed to represent ideals. She was violent and unforgiving, selfish, and always thinking of things that could never happen.
The other spirit was Tasogare, a name that translated to the word 'Dusk' and he was Akatsuki's exact opposite. He seemed to represent Reality, which would make sense since Akatsuki was Ideals. Tasogare was highly forgiving and often times would propose ideas that were so kind and saint like that they required more effort than even Mitsuoki was willing to put forth to accomplish. He always told Mitsuoki things the way they were, rather than how he thought they should be and if he was able, he would tell the soul reaper why they were like that. Unlike the super obvious clothing that Akatsuki wore, Tasogare was wearing a suit of samurai styled armor with ceramic and metal plates on top of a leather backdrop, all of it clad in black. He wore a helmet that Mitsuoki and Akatsuki had never once seen him take off, and wielded a katana at his hip. The katana had looked exactly like the unreleased form of their zanpakuto, which raised a question in Mitsuoki's mind about why he was the only one that carried it, but the soul reaper had never gotten around to asking. Maybe he would find out before this was all over?
Tasogare had asked if he was ready to begin, to which Mitsuoki had stood up and, in a bold, confident, and determined voice, confirmed that he was ready to start his trials. Tasogare had been the one to explain the rules of his bankai trial. There were two zanpakuto spirits so Mitsuoki would be obligated to satisfy both of them with two separate trials. It was understandable, so Mitsuoki didn't protest it at all. He was not even surprised by the news. Tasogare had also gone on to tell Mitsuoki that he would be free to choose which trial he would undertake first, leaving the other spirit's trial as the default last one. It was then that Akatsuki had advised doing Tasogare's first since his was the one that Mitsuoki was least likely to screw up. Mitsuoki had given no comment towards Akatsuki since he was not sure what either of their trials were at this point in time, only that Akatsuki had believed that her own would be the more difficult of the two. Tasogare had replied to it by telling Akatsuki that her trial would be easier since Mitsuoki had a very simple method of beating it, if he chose it. This made Mitsuoki raise an eyebrow.
Tasogare had recommended that they both simply tell Mitsuoki what their trials would be, and then let him decide for himself which to take on first. Mitsuoki had agreed that this would be the best course of action and Akatsuki had seemed confident that Mitsuoki would choose her own first, even though he was advised not to. Tasogare had explained that his trial would be one that played to Mitsuoki's weakness. He had not a single memory from when he was a human, and so, he had not a single shred of understanding about the greater world. The trial was that Mitsuoki had to explore his memories to learn about the man he used to be, so he could understand more about the man he currently is. More importantly than understanding himself, he would gain understanding of his zanpakuto spirits. Mitsuoki would understand why it is that he has two spirits instead of just one, why they have such contrasting personalities, and why his shikai functions the way it does. Akatsuki's trial was very simple by comparison. Mitsuoki would have to force her into submission by using his Change of Heart ability on her. It was not as simple as she made it sound.
Mitsuoki looked down at the two swords that were rested across his crossed legs and gazed at them with a heavy hearted expression. He didn't know which trial to take on since both of them were much more difficult than they seemed. He highly doubted that Akatsuki would just let him put enough marks on her to invoke the Change of Heart ability, that would be much too simple. She was also the more combattive spirit between the two, so she would likely have extremely powerful fighting abilities. His usual tricks wouldn't work against her, either. Then, for Tasogare's trial, Mitsuoki would have all of the questions that he had been wanting to get answered, answered. He questioned if he was even ready for that level of clarity. He was unsure if he would be able to handle the information he was given, or if he would be so greatly weighed down by it that he would be unable to combat Akatsuki. No, it was not the question of IF he could handle what he found out, it was the knowledge that he would not be able to handle it at all. The events of his past life tied in so greatly with his present life that it effected his zanpakuto. There was only one logical choice.
Mitsuoki turned to face Akatsuki with a very stern expression. His eyes were strong, determined, and showed his level of resolve when it came to passing this trial. He told Akatsuki that he could not force himself to use the Change of Heart on her, to make her submit to him. It was not part of who he was and that if he were to use that ability for personal gains, he would have to kill himself directly after from the amount of shame he would feel in his heart. The mentioning of a heart seemed to earn a stiffled 'kek' from the female zanpakuto spirit. Akatsuki had told Mitsuoki that she would help him out and even went and put four eclipse looking tattoos on her cheek free of charge, right in front of Mitsuoki's very eyes. Now, Mitsuoki had fully understood why it was that she had given him that for his trial. She wanted to put him in a situation where he would take the easiest route out and use the ability that he hated the most. However, things had not played out for Akatsuki as she had planned. Mitsuoki had refused her a second time, saying that he would sooner forfeit hsi zanpakuto altogether before using Change of Heart for personal gain.
The words that Mitsuoki had spoke only served to make Akatsuki annoyed with the soul reaper. She told him that Change of Heart was a technique that was made to reflect his most hated thing about life. It was made so he would be able to survive any fight, no matter the enemy, so long as he was willing to use it. It was at that point that Mitsuoki interrupted Akatsuki and said that he was completely unwilling to use such a shameful technique. Akatsuki had let out a frustrated sigh. She considered his words to be an insult to her since that technique was part of who she was, who both of the zanpakuto spirits were. The fact that he hated it to such an extent that he would risk death was insulting, and him calling it shameful was even worse. She had said that she can not force him to use the Change of Heart ability on her, but he also would refuse to teach him Bankai if he did not use it. Mitsuoki had thought that she would try to force him to use the ability, so his reaction was that the point of a bankai trial was to force his zanpakuto into submission. So, since she did not want to submit to his desire to learn bankai, he would fight her until she did.
Akatsuki smiled a toothy grin and shouted "Fine!" before flash stepping into Mitsuoki's face and planting the front of her foot into his chest. He was sitting in a meditating position with the two blades in their shikai form on his lap, so he only had enough time to react to grab the two swords before he was kicked. Mitsuoki was lifted from his seated position and sent flying straight across the crater, all the way to the back wall where he formed a crater. Mitsuoki slid down, landing on the ground on he knees where he was hunched over, gasping for air while still holding the two swords with his eyes wide open from shock. Shock that there was such a speed difference between himself and Akatsuki, as well as the shock that he survived the hit. Akatsuki had shouted the first rule of combat to Mitsuoki in a cutesy tone, as always. The first rule was that he should never pick a fight unless he is immediately ready to fight. Then she shouted the second rule, never let your guard down. Mitsuoki put on a strong face and got to his feet quickly, brandishing his blade while preparing to go back in and try to fight Akatsuki face to face.
Mitsuoki would quickly form energy around his body and let it explode behind him, acting as a propellant to shoot him forward at a blinding speed. Akatsuki had already appeared above the soul reaper while he was in the middle of the technique and planted her foot in his back, sending Mitsuoki to the ground. He had hit the ground hard and, due to his momentum, began flying across the crater's floor, bouncing like a rock on water while doing so. Akatsuki had given him no time to finish his flying lesson and had flash stepped to stand in his way and grab Mitsuoki by his throat, stopping his momentum entirely. She shouted at him, declaring how much she hated that he constantly ignored her suggestions. She then hit him in the stomach with her knee, forcing the air out of Mitsuoki. His neck was released just before Akatsuki rammed her balled fist into his face, sending him flying back to land on his back. She looked down over him, watching his hands to notice that he was still holding on to his zanpakuto. She told him that he wasn't even worthy to touch her weapon, let alone worthy to use her power, and tried to kick the sword out of his hand.
When her foot was close enough, Mitsuoki had dropped the sword and grabbed the limb in the middle of Akatsuki's swing and pulled it up hard to throw her off balance. At the same time, he lifted his legs straight into the air before thrusting them down to the ground to lift his back up, and used the energy to keep his body going till he was in a crouched position, back on his feet. Akatsuki had recovered quickly from Mitsuoki's desperate move and went to punch the soul reaper straight in his chest, and Mitsuoki had used Tasogare's sword, the black one, to block her fist. For someone so small, she was incredibly strong and required Mitsuoki to use both of his hands to stop her. One hand held the zanpakuto's grip, the other was pressed against the back of the blade to act as a brace, and even then, he sunk into the ground just a bit. Akatsuki shouted that Mitsuoki was weak before spinning on her heel and kicking Mitsuoki's knee, sending him to the ground with a charlie horse. While he was on his knee, the one she collapsed, Akatsuki went back in and punched Mitsuoki in the chest again, sending him flying further back and rolling on the ground till he stopped not far away.
Mitsuoki was quick to get back to his feet, he had already known that Akatsuki would not be giving him time to collect his thoughts. This knowledge proved useful when Akatsuki appeared directly above him, dropping her heel on his head. Once again, Mitsuoki was forced to use his zanpakuto as a shield to block the girl's foot from collapsing his skull. Another crater was made where Mitsuoki stood, sinking deeper as Akatsuki continued putting pressure on him. Mitsuoki was gritting his teeth from how hard it was to stop the drop kick. He already had the fifth tattoo in place, it was on her fist, where it appeared back when he blocked her punch. That was the true strength of the zanpakuto. Whichever blade he used, so long as it made contact with his opponent, a tattoo was left. However, Mitsuoki had noticed that at no point did Akatsuki display any signs of any effects being pushed on her. Mitsuoki quickly figured out that there was no effect since Tasogare only pushed his effects if Akatsuki had pushed her's, and she had not used any of them as of yet, so Tasogare did not feel the need to use his. That meant that Mitsuoki would definitely need to think of a new way to fight, without relying on his zanpakuto's abilities so much.
Mitsuoki had pushed up on his sword, forcing Akatsuki up into the air before he used his free hand to form a set of daggers from his own reishi that he threw at the spirit. Akatsuki had used the exact same technique to counter his, causing the three daggers to neutralize each other. Mitsuoki had no time to analyze Akatsuki's actions before she vanished from his sights. However, he did have enough time to sense where she was going. It was thanks to Mitsuoki's ability to sense his surroundings perfectly that he could sense where Akatsuki had turned when she began he flash step, and where she was moving during that stepping technique, as well as where she had stopped. She was going to try and kick him in the back of the same leg that she hit before, and was promptly stopped by Mitsuoki using Tasogare's blade to block the leg. He then flash stepped a few feet forward to dodge a counter attack from the zanpakuto spirit that was aimed for his torso. Akatsuki had performed half of a normal step before vanishing from Mitsuoki's sights again and appearing in front of him, trying to knee him in the face. Sidestepping, he was able to dodge the attack by a couple of inches.
It was cyclical. Akatsuki would use her flash step to escape Mitsuoki's vision and appear in a random location. Mitsuoki would use his reflexes and ability to sense his surroundings and barely be able to block her incoming attack. Then, Akatsuki would use her flash step again just to come to the same end. She gave Mitsuoki not a single moment to make his own attack. Her every attack that was blocked was followed by another attack from a different direction that would only be blocked and followed up by another attack. Mitsuoki was standing still at this point, constantly moving his one sword to block each and every incoming attack while trying his very hardest to find an opening to make his own from. Tasogare had moved from his spot in the middle of the crater to the far end where he leaned against the wall and watched Mitsuoki blocking in vain. He had said, under his breath, that Mitsuoki should have done his own trial first, since that would have given him the knowledge necessary to defeat Akatsuki in battle. Since Mitsuoki chose to fight without knowing a single thing about his enemy, he would have to struggle to come out on top.
Akatsuki had paused her assault on Mitsuoki to stand in front of him and tell him that he was pretty good at blocking attacks and avoiding damage, but he was terrible at actually doing something about his opponent. Mitsuoki had given her no reply at all, just pointed his fist at her and rapidly shot a blade of energy at her that was much too fast for her to dodge at such short range. It hit her in the stomach and sent her flying back from the amount of power the condensed spirit energy contained. He then replied that Akatsuki talked too much before flash stepping. Rather than appearing near Akatsuki to take her on, he appeared next to the sword he let go of earlier so he could grab it before confronting Akatsuki once more. With both sword in hand, he had appeared directly behind Akatsuki and tried to cut her back in half and quickly ending this battle in a single swing. What he had not expected was Akatsuki summoning a weapon from thin air that was exactly like the sword that Mitsuoki was holding, the white one, and using it to block the incoming attack. She asked Mitsuoki if he honestly thought that she would be so easy to defeat.
The tone alone had let Mitsuoki know that Akatsuki was planning to make things much more complicated now that he forced her to pull out a weapon. In her other hand appeared a sword made entirely of her own spiritual energy that was modeled in the same shape as her actual sword. Mitsuoki readied his blades and narrowed his gaze on Akatsuki. A flash step backwards would be used to dodge his zanpakuto spirit turning around and slashing at him. He then used the same technique to move foreward and attempt to slash the blonde haired woman, only to have both of his swords blocked by just one of her own. Sparks were created from the two three blades colliding at the spot where they touched, and Mitsuoki had immediately known what was to come next. He wasn't psychic, he was just a very logical man. Both of his hands were occupied and only one of Akatsuki's was in use. The spirit energy sword had been swung and Mitsuoki had quickly pushed off the ground and performed a front flip over Akatsuki. He began crouching down while spinning around, attempting to slash at Akatsuki only to have the spirit flash step out of the way of the attack and come out unscathed.
She had appeared behind Mitsuoki trying to slash his spine in half the same way that he had tried to slash at her own. Mitsuoki had countered it by guarding his back with his zanpakuto, forming an "x" shape with the two blades that prevented her own sword from making contact with his skin. Mitsuoki spun around and while moving one of his blades to slash at Akatsuki, keeping the other at his back while turning to prevent her blade from moving closer to his kimono and cutting it. Akatsuki had used one of her blades to block Mitsuoki's while she also tried to counter him. He jumped back quickly while angling his butt further back to avoid the tip of the blade from cutting his waist. He then leapt forward while making an attempt to slash Akatsuki and the spirit blocking it again. He had brought his other zanpakuto forward to try and slash at her, only to be blocked by her other sword. Another slash attempt was made and another block was performed to stop it. Mitsuoki had taunted Akatsuki, saying that she was good at blocking his attacks and pretty terrible at making attacks of his own.
This taunt proved to be a terrible idea since it only made Akatsuki smirk before saying that Mitsuoki should not be so arrogant as to assume that he could defeat someone that was literally a part of himself. She jumped back and readied her blades before jumping forward and immeiately slashing at Mitsuoki, only to be blocked by one of his swords. Mitsuoki had taunted her further, saying that he was surprised to see she knew how to use something other than her brutish fists. Akatsuki had not given a single response to the taunt. She opted instead to begin a flurry of slashing that Mitsuoki had a great deal of trouble keeping up with. He was good with a sword, but he was not able to compete with a spirit that WAS a sword. He was being countered at every turn for the few times when Mitsuoki was able to actually make an attack of his own. It was better than when she was using her fists where he was helpless but to block; but, it still left Mitsuoki in a helpless situation. When he attacked he blocked, when she attakced, Mitsuoki blocked. The battle had seemed to come to a stalemate where both sides were evenly matched in their ability.
