The constant swinging of swords continued for hours, each side trading blocks and attacks, but not a single one of them successfully making a hit. Mitsuoki was able to know where Akatsuki was at all times, even when she was using her flash step to get an edge on him. He knew where her sword was, where it was going, what direction it was moving, and how fast it was going. She had almost got him when she started a swing and he began blocking it; but, then she turned the sword and aimed lower, almost hitting Mitsuoki if he hadn't used his kyomon as an impromptu defense against the slash. The entire time that Mitsuoki was slashing at Akatsuki, he could feel something coming through her zanpakuto. He felt fear, as though she were afraid of losing to Mitsuoki. He could not understand why she was afraid. Had he chosen to take Tasogare's trial first, he would know exactly why. The slashing continued throughout the day, sparks flying every time their blades collided. As they continued fighting, he could see the desperation in her eyes. It only got worse as they continued and when they stopped battling, Mitsuoki had to force himself to not ask about it.
Tasogare had got between them after over twelve hours of fighting and told Mitsuoki that he would need to stop fighting for the day. It was more of an order than it was a request, and Akatsuki quickly protested, shouting that she was not finished with Mitsuoki. Tasogare told her that she would stand down or be fighting both of them instead of just the soul reaper. The notion of fighting Tasogare and Mitsuoki had seemed to put her off, especially since the larger zanpakuto spirit already had his hand on the hilt of his blade in preparation to draw it. Akatsuki made her sword disappear and she clicked her tongue at him. Mitsuoki had told Tasogare that he wanted to keep fighting, but the spirit had replied, telling him that he needed to rest and let his strength return before he kept going. He had six more days to fight, and there would be many opportunities after that. He was right. Mitsuoki was tired beyond his wildest imaginations and had still not put a single cut on Akatsuki, but, he wanted to show the zanpakuto spirit that he could go the distance, that he could push beyond his limitations to obtain anything he wanted, and was willing to do so at a moment's notice.
Mitsuoki had returned to the small riverside village in district sixty eight of the rukon districts, the shrine where he had buried Haruka's ashes alongside the other twelve people who died so long ago. He had spent time moving about the town, patrolling the city under the cover of the moon's light, spreading his residual spirit pressure all over the place to make it seem like he was recently at the village. Well, that was a lie. Mitsuoki did not think he was doing anything wrong since it had no effect on the kido corpse or the soul society. Mitsuoki was walking the streets so he could remember the old days, back before he was a soul reaper, before he met Haruka. Afterwards, when the moon was in the middle of the sky, he had went back to Haruka's grave where he formed his Shallow Grave, a barrier that completely blocked spiritual pressure and scent from being sensed by anyone on the outside. He did so to prevent anyone from the village from sensing him and coming to look for him. The following morning, he took the barrier down and used his gatestone teleport to return to the training grounds for more punishment.
Returning there, Mitsuoki had promptly summoned his zanpakuto spirits to which he faced the same question. He was asked if he wanted to continue Akatsuki's trial, and when he confirmed that he wanted to continue, Akatsuki had asked if he was still hellbent on making her submit to his desire to learn bankai by fighting her. Mitsuoki had immediately used flash step to move forward while raising his zanpakuto, filling it with his spiritual energy and bringing it down on Akatsuki's being. Akatsuki had formed her sword and held it up, getting forced into the ground from the force behind Mitsuoki's attack. He did not stop at just that, he immediately brought the other sword around to try and slash her from the side, which she tried to block but was instead sent flying sideways into the wall of the crater, forming a crater in that wall. She had commented that Mitsuoki had suddenly grown a pair of balls that seemed to be working better than the ones he was born with before flying out of the crater herself, using a technique that Mitsuoki had called 'Pulse' to get back in Mitsuoki's range. Tasogare had let out a sigh and moved to stand on the sidelines again.
While he was asleep, Akatsuki had invaded his dreams and told Mitsuoki something that forced him to make a decision. She told him that the longer she fought him, the closer she got to owning his soul. The closer she got to owning his soul, the more likely it would be that she would become the soul reaper, and he would watch helplessly as she did everything that he was afraid of doing. She wanted to make his dreams come true, but she hated as she watched him refuse to use his power to make it happen. He could take over everyone, every last soul reaper who was weaker than he was, and make them all confront their leaders. Doing this would make it so they had to stand down or kill almost everyone, and, they would all choose to give up. Mitsuoki did not want this. It was not the way he operated. He knew that by doing that, he would just be taking over the Soul Society, and making it unsafe for himself. They would try to assassinate him, rebel against him, and do everything in their power to bring him down. They would not pay attention to any good he would do. He wanted to change them over time, show them that there was another path to peace, and war was not it. But this required patience, and Akatsuki was running low on that commodity.
There was fire in his eyes that had not been there in... ever. Even when Haruka was around, Mitsuoki had never looked so passionate about anything he was doing. He had purpose, and Akatsuki had only gotten even more infuriated that this passion was brought about by a desire to stop her from helping him. Mitsuoki had been giving Akatsuki no break from his attacks. He never released the energy from his sword so his every strike was infinitely stronger than it normally would be, and it had been keeping Akatsuki from properly attacking him. Mitsuoki didn't speak as his slashes kept coming and he did not give Akatsuki any time to channel her own spiritual pressure. Her specialty was fighting with weapons and her fists, along with being fast. The magic and energy stuff was Tasogare's department. Mitsuoki had channeled energy into his body and used it to propel himself, spinning like a top while crossing blades with Akatsuki, constantly hitting the two swords and causing her to try her best to not be knocked over by his overwhelming determination. Mitsuoki crossed his blades in front him and slashed in an "x" form. Releasing the energy at long last.
The energy shot forward in the same "x" form that Mitsuoki had slashed in and sent Akatsuki flying backwards, trying to block and failing miserably. She hit the wall and formed a crater and gave no time for herself to recover before flash stepping to Mitsuoki's face and trying to slash at him. Mitsuoki had turned on his heel, letting Akatsuki slash the ground next to him before using his elbow to ram her in the side of the face. He turned in Akatsuki's direction while sending out another crescent shaped wave of silver energy in her direction, this one being dodge by the zanpakuto spirit. The large attack obstructed Mitsuoki's line of sight of her and made it so she was able to try and make a slash at him. Mitsuoki had blocked with the white sword and Akatsuki smiled before grabbing it, letting Mitsuoki that in order for him to fight her, he had to reject her, which means that her own blade would get more dull. Mitsuoki released the sword and raised his hand as though he were going to smack her, but instead formed the same reishi sword that she had used the day before and used that to try and cut Akatsuki, catching her off guard entirely.
Mitsuoki had told her that he was not rejecting her, but rather, she was rejecting him. She did not trust him enough to follow his lead, therefore, she was not worthy to have him as her soul reaper. Akatsuki had jumped back to dodge the slash, but Mitsuoki had used the other sword to send out another wave of his spiritual pressure while shouting a declaration that he would crush her. Mitsuoki dashed forward with his pulse ability, crossing blades with Akatsuki who was still holding both of her zanpakuto, but only using the one she was holding by the grip to stop him. She hardened her gaze and began charging energy into her own sword and made a slashing motion to Mitsuoki, only to find that Mitsuoki had sent a pulse of energy into his zanpakuto that caused her own to turn to crystal and shatter. Mitsuoki had used a flash step and gotten behind Akatsuki where he immediately fired one of his energy bullets at her, hitting the spirit in the back but having very little effect on her beyond stopping her momentum. Akatsuki turned and flash stepped to cross blades with Mitsuoki. She flipped the other zanpakuto and grabbed the hilt before trying to make a slash with it as well.
Mitsuoki had caught Akatsuki off guard, but that shock factor had worn off. They had resumed their ballad of trading blocks from the day before, except, Mitsuoki was striking much harder. He was fighting with purpose. A battle to save the Soul Society from having to kill him. The energy had filled his blades again and Mitsuoki had returned to hitting Akatsuki with everything he had. Akatsuki had parried one of his attacks and quickly jumped in the air, turning her feet towards him and kicking him in the stomach hard enough to send him flying back. Mitsuoki had rammed his zanpakuto and rei-sword into the ground while sliding back in order to slow himself down to a stop before launching himself forward with his pulse ability. He began spinning while rapidly charging and discharging his resonate ability, creating multiple waves of the attack that flew out and hit the walls of the crater, cutting deep into it. More importantly, it his Akatsuki multiple times, with each hit forcing her to use both swords to block, and each hit forcing her back. Mitsuoki did not dare to let up his attacks and got close enough to begin slashing at her.
Akatsuki had been put on the defensive. She was stronger than Mitsuoki but her will to actually fight him was weaker than his will to bring her to her knees. Her look of desperation had increased as she began realizing that she would have to kill him to win the fight, which she did not want to do. Akatsuki had thrown the sword that belonged to Mitsuoki at him and fired an energy bullet at it to make it fly faster. He was unable to use his petrify to stop the sword, but he was able to flash step out of the way before turning and flash stepping to attack her from the side. The zanpakuto spirit was not so easily taken by surprise, not twice in a row at at least. Mitsuoki's attack had been stopped by Akatsuki's blade and she formed the same reishi sword that Mitsuoki was using. She knew that so long as Mitsuoki had two swords, she would not be able to fight him with her fists, so she had to play his game. Akatsuki had found an opening in the midst of his attacks and quickly dropped to the ground, sweeping her leg under Mitsuoki's feet, knocking him off balance. She vanished with flash step and appeared over Mitsuoki, aiming her sword at his stomach.
Mitsuoki had vanished with his own flash step, leaving his zanpakuto and the one Akatsuki had dropped behind with a thin, silver cable extending from both of them. He was directly above her and began rapidly firing energy bullets at Akatsuki's position, kicking dust and rubble into the air around her. He began spinning while falling, closing in on Akatsuki's position. While moving downward by gravity, he shortened the length of his tethers, pulling them off the ground while making them whirl around him, increasing in speed as they drew closer to his hands until they were being grabbed by Mitsuoki and spinning as fast as he was. The crater shook and another explosion was set off inside the training ground where Mitsuoki had slammed down on Akatsuki's position, but kicking even more dust into the air. The dust was tons of small particles, which blocked Mitsuoki's ability to detect things with his own spiritual pressure, since things were everywhere around him. He began spinning again and rapidly firing off daggers in all directions, punching holds in the airborne debris that made it so he could effectively find where Akatsuki had flash stepped to. He should have been enjoying this fight, but he was not.
As soon as he locked onto her, he turned on his heel and flash stepped directly into her face and rammed his knee into it. Her line of sight was blocked by the dust and she was unable to see it coming, so she was unable to block. She was knocked back, her zanpakuto flying and Mitsuoki coming down on her. The world turned black for her as Mitsuoki consumed everything in her line of sight, the shimmer of his sword, the white one, the one that represented her drew closer. When she thought that he had slammed it into her, she looked to her left to see he had rammed it in the ground and had his foot firmly planted on her chest. She looked at him with a tear in her eye, realizing that the only reasy he hadn't harmed her was because he, in that moment, refused to strike her down. Mitsuoki looked down on her with fury in his eyes and shouted that he will not hurt a part of himself, but he will also not let that part of himself consume him. He yelled that she WILL place all of her confidence and loyalty in him, and do as he orders. He added that she will teach him his bankai, and she will watch as he accomplishes his dreams of changing the soul society, without violence.
Akatsuki relaxed her arms and looked to her side, turning her head away from the zanpakuto. She was crying in the face of defeat, but she willingly said the words "I yield." to let Mitsuoki know that she would comply. Mitsuoki took his foot off her chest and pulled the zanpakuto out the ground slowly before flicking both of them and giving the two swords a quick twirl in his hands for added flare. He said "Good." in a stern voice with a hint of attitude before turning to Tasogare. Mitsuoki had pointed out that Tasogare was next on the list of trials to complete, and the zanpakuto spirit nodded his head before getting off the wall and making his way towards him. Akatsuki got off the ground and sat on her knees, looking at the ground in a sullen manner. Mitsuoki could tell that Akatsuki was afraid and sad that she would have to let him undertake Tasogare's trial. His eyes narrowed on her and he asked what she was looking so sad and scared for. Akatsuki had given no answer. Tasogare had told Mitsuoki that she was afraid of what he was about to learn, but she was following his orders of having confidence in his ability to remain neutral in his judgement.
Mitsuoki had asked how Tasogare would be performing his part of the trial, to which Tasogare had replied that Mitsuoki would be going inside his own mind and finding the answers for himself. The soul reaper was instructed to meditate, and that would be the only instructions that Tasogare would be able to give him from then on. Mitsuoki had sat down and crossed his legs, closed his eyes, and began focusing on the world around him once more. He let his mind relax and then, he opened his eyes. When he did that, he was standing in a world with a line running straight down the middle. On the left side, the world was white with black lines forming the outline of each and every object as though it were drawn on paper, but not colored in as of yet. On the right side, the world was black with white lines forming the same, as though it were seen in a negative filter. Below him, the ground rippled as though he were standing on water. Easily visible below the rippling surface was two clusters of fish, each swimming in perfect circles, acting as though he weren't there. When the white fish crossed to the white side of the world, they turn black with white eyes. When they cross to the black side, they become white with black eyes.
He looked around at the world, noting several stone pillars arranged in a circle. Stone steps were had lead in varying directions, away from where Mitsuoki was standing, but they had all seemed to be floating on the surface of the water, rather than being attached to something below. There was something missing from this world that was normally here when he consulted with his zanpakuto spirits in the past... His spirits, themselves. In hindsight, that made sense since his spirits had been summoned to the real world. Mitsuoki took a step forward, standing on the first stone and immediately, all of the fish turned to look at Mitsuoki with their eyes glowing. The black fish's eyes glowed white and the white fish's eyes glowed black. Then, the world changed to being red. Everywhere Mitsuoki looked, he saw flames engulfing everything. He was unable to move his own body but at the same time, his body was moving on its own. He moved to the door and swung it wide open only to recoil when a blast of flames came into his room. Then, Mitsuoki ran to the window. Looking down, he saw a fence with sharp spikes and a garbage dumpster with a meter of space between them.
He jumped from the window, clearly aiming for the garbage dumpster but his body impacted the fence. Everything went black and Mitsuoki found himself in his innor world once more with the fish all looking at him. They had now stopped swimming and were staring, even though the vision had ended. Mitsuoki stepped back and watched the fish turn to follow him. He thought in an inquisitive tone of how strange it was that they had finally stopped ignoring him. Mitsuoki stepped forward, taking another step to get onto the second stone in the path. This time, when the world faded in, Mitsuoki had seen himself in the third person. He had a chain in his chest and was standing next to his body, looking around. Clearly, Mitsuoki was dead, and his soul was standing next to his corpse, looking for the soul reaper who was supposed to come and send him to the soul society. The soul Mitsuoki had called out, shouting for anyone who could hear him, but no one replied. He turned and began walking towards the street to where the police were gathered. He watched his soul try to grab one of the officers while shouting to get his attention, and then the look on his soul's face when he saw his hands phase right through him.
The vision faded out and Mitsuoki was standing on the second stone. He mumbled to himself his realization that the stones were points in his life... or, rather, his death. He moved to the next step and watched the world return to the world of the living, where he saw his soul version directly after touching the officer. He turned and ran to the next one, shouting at him, calling for attention. He was in severe distress and had even been crying, displaying more emotion in a few seconds than Mitsuoki knew was possible for him. Every last one of the firefighters had ignored Mitsuoki and his panic only increased more from it. Mitsuoki then tried getting the attention of a police official who was keeping the road blocked, only to come to the same result as the firefighters. The real Mitsuoki had tried to reach out to him, trying to say that he was dead and should stop trying to interact with the living. But, of course, the vision version of himself was completely unable to hear him. Mitsuoki tried to touch him and saw his own hand phase right through the soul version's body. That reminded him that he was in the middle of a vision, and not the real world.
The vision faded again and he found himself standing on the next step. Mitsuoki took another step forward to initiate the next vision. When the world faded in, he saw his soul version huddled against the railing, next to his body. He was in the fetal position, holding his knees and burying his face in them, weeping. Mitsuoki tried to call him an idiot for feeling so much pain before saying that if he did not cease his blubbering he would become a hollow. Words that fell on deaf ears. Mitsuoki had grabbed his zanpakuto- wait- no, he did not. He quickly noticed that he was not holding either of the swords and there was no blade at his hip. Mitsuoki's vision faded and he was on the next step, where he immediately walked forward. The next vision showed Mitsuoki standing next to some people at the mall, waving at them. He was trying to find someone who could see him, making the soul reaper version of himself wonder if his soul counterpart had known of the existence of such people who could see the dead, or if he was trying to find someone... anyone who could break him free of his loneliness. Of course, the soul version found no one who could help him.
Mitsuoki had taken another step when he returned to his inner world and saw a vision of his soul form on his knees, clutching his cheast and screaming in pain. Mitsuoki tried to look away but he knew what was happening, he did not need to see himself undergoing the process of hollowfication. Then, he paused and looked at himself. He questioned why he was a soul reaper at all if he was turning into a hollow. Mitsuoki watched the chain in his chest vanished and the hole opening up. Suddenly, just as the soul version of Mitsuoki was about to burst into spirit particles, he saw a flash of light and a faceless soul reaper was pressing the butt of her sword against his skull. When the hilt was removed, he saw a bright, blue light shining- the symbol of a soul burial. Mitsuoki's soul had stopped screaming and that blue light had consumed his entire being before sending him off to the soul society. Mitsuoki did not need to know what happened after that, he had very vivid memories of his arrival to the rukon district, number seventy. His first meeting with people who could see him was an attempted mugging, his second meeting was the soul reaper Michino.
When Mitsuoki had returned to his mind, he was standing in front of... someone... who did not belong there. Before him, Mitsuoki was looking at a man who had no face at all. He was wearing a white cloak that had a black underside. A hood on top of the man's head prevented Mitsuoki from seeing his face. Under that hooded cloak, he could see that the man was wearing some sort of soul reaper's garb. The top kimono was white, instead of black, and under that one was a black garb. Looking down, Mitsuoki saw that his socks were black and his sandals were white. Then, the man spake, and asked why Mitsuoki was looking at him as though they were strangers. Mitsuoki replied that he did not know who he was, and the man replied that Mitsuoki did not know who he himself was at all. He told Mitsuoki that he did not know anything about himself, and that he understood why Mitsuoki would have no idea as to who he was. The man then held his arms out and performed a bow to Mitsuoki. He announced his name, saying that he was the very reason why he was given the trial. He was the final version of his zanpakuto, Zen'in Keihatsu No O, the Omniscient King of Enlightenment.
