First Response Team. Those words, innocent as they were, chilled Shio to the bone. Somehow, for some reason, despite his best efforts...here he was, stuck on a first response team. Running off to deal with a threat that would be all anyone would talk about for months to come. Shio wouldn't even have minded if there had been a sizable enough group...say 30 shinigami for each hollow. If he could've safely blended into the crowd, doing his part and ensuring that his name would be lost in the fuss. But it was only four of them, less than the fingers on his hand. There was no getting around this one. Shio had been recognized, whether through the sheer rotten luck of lottery, or the rumor machine that seemed to insist Shio was the heir ascendant to the Kido Corps, if you believed some of them.
The other three weren't people Shio was extensively familiar with, but Shio did know that each of them seemed to carry themselves with no small amount of import; in near dead silence, save only for the faint swishing sound of their steps, they raced towards their target district, the spot where a disturbance in the air had first been noticed. And yet agaih, Shio could feel the faint, ever-so-painful itch just beneath the surface of his skin as he realized that not a single one of them could outpace him. He'd been trying his best not to lag ahead, not to get there so soon that he couldn't handwave it away. And yet he was still shocked to realize that even though he could see sweat on their brows, expressions of intense concentration...not a single one could get ahead of him. Was he truly -that fast-? Shio hadn't actually taken the time to compare his speed to his comrades, but surely the 1st division wouldn't allow anyone this slow to deal with a threat this large, right...?
And here they had arrived, only to see three Menos, all beginning to rampage freely. It was...odd, at first. To see this sort of wanton destruction, without a single lesser hollow present. But as Shio watched, a white-and-black streak flitted by...only to get speared by a long, prehensile tongue from one of the menos, and consumed. The other comrades made expressions of disgust, but Shio simply nodded slightly. This was good, in a way; the big ones weren't actually present to eat, but had come as a sort of side effect of the sudden concentration of hollows. With any luck, once they met suitable resistance, and were starved of their food, they'd beat a retreat.
Not that Shio could say any of this out loud, of course. This was a group effort, a cell designed to work as a team. To become the first among equals was the absolute worst case scenario.
"Three big ones, four of us. One should stand behind and keep an eye out for surprises. Any volunteers?"
Again, Shio's mind was churning and roiling. Would volunteering for anything get him the evil eye? Would he be stealing it from anyone that truly wanted it? But after perhaps four or five seconds of wicked silence, it hit Shio; each and every one of his comrades was ready for combat. They -wanted- to test their mettle here. He rose his hand, almost rolling his eyes as he did, as if he were disappointed to see such gung-ho behavior from his peers.
To be frank, he was more confused than anything else. And that which confused Shio quickly seemed to lead to frustration. There wasn't much he couldn't grasp, but...showboating? That was certainly beyond his ken.

Blod was sat at her desk, taking her time to write beautifully with a calligraphy brush. Her mind was filled with turmoil. Soon enough she would meet with the Central 46, and she might have to answer for her crimes- of committing murder against other shinigami and humans, despite the cause it was for. Blodeuwen thought of herself as a soldier first and foremost. To her, despite her immense and unrivaled skill in the art, kido was a tool, a means to an end as opposed to an end itself. She had always been far too goal-oriented for her to see the artistry in her magick. Now she was at the top though... Was that still true? And if so had she not only sullied her duty by killing those people but had she soiled her art which on its own was so pure and wholesome? The people she lived amongst were godless, believing themselves elevated above mortal station and since cresting the wave of her talent Blodeuwen had felt that her artistry brought her closer to God.
She shook such thoughts from her head. What she had done had been necessary... No it had been absolutely essential. Those who had suffered wounds in the attacks would have succumbed to the worst fate possible- they would have become hollows. She had seen firsthand how even arrancars, those hollows who had regained reason, were corrupt, twisted versions of their old selves. Surely the government could understand that? Understand that she had been acting according to her initiative? Otherwise more would have died, and the damage might not have been containable. She finished writing her reports on new recruit training, her beautiful calligraphy having deteriorated somewhat due to her emotions by the end.
Before she could get up to deposit them in the correct box however, she felt a familiar fluttering. Jigokucho. She turned and the hell butterfly flapped towards her, and delivered its message- another hole. She was needed. Fast. Without having time to place her purple kido sochi robe over her shihakusho she left, dressed as a normal captain might be- in a black shinigami robe and a white haori. The haori had the kido corps emblem on its back, a bloated triangle containing a circle. She leapt out of her office and stepped, her shunpo taking her an enormous distance in a short space of time. She wondered what sort of situation she would face when she arrived? She was travelling so quickly that the shinigami sent to investigate wouldn't be able to feel her coming, especially as she made every effort to hide her reiatsu- she would unnecessarily disturb the seireitei otherwise. But it meant that the first response team would be on their own a little longer.
And now here he was, watching the display of his colleagues, and silently fuming. Even from this far away, Shio could notice so many flaws in their techniques, so many opportunities they let slip by. These were hollows for heaven's sake, no matter how large! It wouldn't take much more than a few well-placed strokes to have one of them turning tail and running away. And he couldn't help but feel just slightly ashamed on their behalf, to see them flitting about, only barely landing glancing blows on these beasts. He knew that they were probably reluctant to release their zanpakuto in this occupied area, but what sort of excuse was that...? Wasn't the 1st division renowned for being able to take grasp of a situation quickly? This should've already been dealt with, by now!
As he sat silently boggling, trying to wrap his mind around what exactly was going on, as he tried to step into the heads of his comrades and fathom just what they were expecting from him, he noticed it...just a second too late. One of the Gillians was opening its maw wide, head turned away from the shinigami that had been battling with it. The beast was apparently giving cleverness a try for now, hoping if it cause enough widespread destruction, it would be able to draw them off. Perhaps pull their focus. His comrade noticed, as well, and Shio could already see their hand extending in the trademark gesture of a kido...but they were too slow, as well.
Shio's mind ran and raced, going over all the possibilities. Could any of his comrades have saved them, in this circumstance? How fast would he need to be to get there just in time? Could he deflect it with his blade? Would he need to release? If it were anyone else, what could he have expected from them? How many lives would have been lost, and just how many...how many could Shio let slip by, fall between the cracks before they would start pinning the blame on him? How many lives could Shio throw away for his comfort to continue?
And why the hell was he thinking about it in these terms?
No one had to die. None of these lives were expendable. Perhaps one of his comrades would've been a bit too slow, a bit too clumsy, a bit too weak...perhaps they could've minimized damage, but not totally get rid of it. And perhaps no one would blame him, would blame anyone for letting this situation get out of hand. But Shio wasn't any other shinigami, and Shio knew that no matter how well they tried to diffuse the blame, it would be square on his shoulders. But no one needed to die.
None of these lives were worth throwing away.
He disappeared in a flicker of motion, throwing one hand out in a spray of motion, fingers splayed out and golden light forming into an enormous, incredible array...capturing the burst of reaitsu and causing it to dissipate in a flicker of red and gold. He glanced around, inhaling deeply, and speaking almost in a whisper, as he ran a hand over his face.
"Bakudo Number 39: Enkosen."
Surely, the silence before him wasn't portentous, right?
Description: Summons a large, circular shield of condensed reiatsu to block opponents' attacks. The user's Zanpakutō is used as the central focus of the shield. An Advanced or Mastered user can bypass this flaw and use it on any part of their body.

Blod exited her final step and gazed upon the supreme carnage that was before her. The number of menos had increased from three to seven- and three of the newcomers were adjuchas class menos. Hollows were swarming through the hole that lead to the dangai- she could barely see the garganta on the other side. She felt the rush of reiatsu as a menos grande produced a cero, bright red and deadly but a shinigami blocked it with bakudo number thirty-nine. He appeared to be defending his fellow. Blodeuwen read the story of the battle instantly, simply following the reiatsu. Despite there being four shinigami, and despite their competence they had arrived when the hollows had already gained a foothold. Three had headed forwards into the fray but had far overestimated their abilities. Judging by the shocked look of the one that had just had his behind saved from a cero, the last to join had only just done so. Unless she did something quickly they'd be overwhelmed by sheer numbers.
"Oi, a fab Duw! Gwae fi o'm genedigaeth. Da o ddwy ynys a ddiffeithwyd o'm hachos i." She said, reciting the incantation she had written, her hair turning midnight black as she did so. She selected five menos- the two adjuchas, and the three menos grande who were not near the one shinigami who seemed to be strong enough to stand a chance, as his enkosen had absorbed the cero before breaking though it had not gone through. Five starlings appeared around her, burning bright with magick. She waved her hand and they dispersed, each flying at incredible speeds towards its intended target. The gillians were too enormous and cumbersome to dodge the birds of magic, the adjuchas much quicker but none could avoid the Empress of Kido's power.
They struck, and the targets turned a muted shade of black, as if a veil obscured them. Blod swept her hand theatrically and bright blades of kido stabbed into each of the targets, her strength such that each died with a single cry. Perhaps, now, the other shinigami would notice. With fury she descended upon the armada of hollows beneath her. Her very presence was antipathy to them, the enormous crushing weight of her reiatsu simply blasted all of the lower level, unevolved hollows out of existence. The shinigami around her would more than likely find the weight totally stifling, the full force of Blodeuwen exerting her sweet, flowery but deadly reiatsu. Any shinigami who were of the unseated level would find themselves probably completely frozen. Even a captain-class shinigami would find themselves quailing before her supreme might. Blodeuwen was sick to death of these holes, was sick to death of this plague of hollows, was sick to death of everything. She cut a swathe through the hollows who simply disintegrated.
"Hadou 54- Haien!" she said, easily loosing the mid-level kido without an incantation, straight into the dangai, completely obliterating all of the hollows present there and around there. There were still many of them left- including the menos which would be completely paralyzed as well as three of the shinigami- though she felt the last one, who had surprised his friend with the enkosen, had a little more mettle and would likely be able to destroy the gillian, as Blod swept through the hollow, her usually pretty face curled into a terrible snarl.
Name: Hadō #54 Haien (Abolishing Flames) Class: Kido Tier: IV Type: Offensive Range: Long (50m) Incantation: Heathen dogs of the Void, hark the singing of the sun king and retreat back to hellfire. Description: Fires a blast of purple spiritual energy at Cero speed that will incinerate a weaker target completely and severely burn those at equal advantages when it makes contact.
Name: Wyrth Bendigeidfran Class: Kido Tier: V/VI/VII Type: Hado Range: 100m Incantation: "Oi, a fab Duw! Gwae fi o'm genedigaeth. Da o ddwy ynys a ddiffeithwyd o'm hachos i." Description: The user of this kido must be at least AL, and a specialized kido user. Upon using it, if it is not already, the user's hair turns black. Then, several starlings appear around the user. This ability can target up to the chosen tier number of opponents at once, and a corresponding number of starlings appear. The starlings are then sent flying towards opponents at cero speed. They are capable of dodging attacks sent to neutralize them, by flying out of the way and will doggedly pursue their prey. Upon contacting an opponent, they will appear to merge with them, giving the opponent's skin a blackish look with star-like spots appearing over them. Each spot causes severe, third degree burn damage and upon the user's command, the opponent will be stabbed in each of the spots with an invisible blade of kido. This is equivalent to damage of a tier lower than the chosen tier. It is possible to avoid this if the victim is the same rank as the user if they focus reiatsu into their skin and make it explode- lifting the spell's effect but causing damage of at least tier V for opponents one rank higher, or VI for opponents of the same rank.
Shio could almost feel the gaze drilling into him, but he did his best to keep his expression bland. He didn't meet his comrade's gaze, he didn't say a single word, didn't even attempt to explain his actions, or how he had just casually swatted aside a cero like it was little more than a love tap. He knew that the questions would come later, but right now there was a job to do, and there was no time to discuss little matters like orders or initiative. He turned towards the large, bulky beast, rose his own hand, inhaled to begin the incantations for another ferocious attack...only for someone to beat him to the punch.
Whatever incantation that was, whatever tongue they spoke, it was none Shio had ever heard of. He remembered a woman for a split second, another shinigami...who had performed what had appeared to be a fully incanted kido without ever speaking a word. Was this something similar? How many people were going around using kido in ways he had never imagined? For a single moment, an odd smile crept across his face. He'd have to start seriously considering his options for Kido in the future. Perhaps there was some inherent truth about Kido that he'd never considered before today...
But as quickly as it came, really crept in at the corners. No, there was no possible future in which he could explore that avenue. Not with things the way they were. There were too many other duties he had to perform, too many important problems for him to start concerning himself with his own growth, his own improvements. There were countless others that needed his help. To worry about his own personal achievements at a time like this...it was the same as murdering these innocents with his own two hands.
He continued to move his hand, but it was a slow, torturous experience, as if he were trying to pull it from a thick bog. He turned his head to find the one exerting their reaitsu, trying to crush everyone present into pulp. Had a Vasto Lorde finally arrived? Was this it? Had Shio finally met his end, before he had done anything of note? He closed his eyes, ready to be crushed into nothingness, to have his blood torn out from him forcibly...but instead he heard that voice again, and the roaring crackle of a powerful kido striking one of the menos left standing. He cracked one eye slowly, taking in the appearance of their savior.
Blodeuwen Hirashi. The leader of the Kido Corps itself. No wonder she had performed something he'd never heard of; to her, Kido was likely as simple as moving a finger. And she had just proven how she could use it to deadly effect. He inhaled deeply, doing his best to remain in place, to keep his movements as minimal and slow as possible. It wouldn't do to draw any more attention to himself, especially not with someone this notorious on the scene.

The hollows now, were all attempting to flee back through the dangai. They had effectively been routed and Blod loosed the terrifying grip upon them that her reiatsu held. She had ensured that her wrath had "accidentally" killed any plus souls in the area who would otherwise have been undergoing the hollowfication process. She noticed that the single remaining menos had not been killed- the shinigami, of course, had not been able to destroy it. Blod pointed at it, and a Byakurai shot straight through its head, which exploded violently.
As the last of the hollows went back through the dangai- a horribly gruesome sight, as many were caught in the spiritual flow and stuck, before being effectively sandblasted into gory pulp by the stampede of their bretherin over them- Blodeuwen cast one final kido- this time a bakudo.
"White demon, black demon. Guardian of north, east, south, west. Pillar of Light, Spears of Darkness. Protection of Heaven, wish of the Desert. Treasure of the Heavens, Curse of the Earth. Four items, five creators of light. Band, disband, form. Unite, shape the ultimate shield. Earth obeys my orders, Heaven guards my soul." She said, and an enormous green barrier came into existence around the hole. She just prayed to God that the kotetsu wouldn't come through again as that thing messed with her kido rather a lot.
She dropped to the ground, somewhat weary, indicating the three shinigami spread about the place come and join her. The fourth was splayed out below her, the many wounds upon his body- perhaps sustained as the hollows fled, began to fester with opaque white ooze. Blod looked at him sullenly before casting one final kido for the day- "Old Gods, new keys, bring the six pointed key into the lock and turn!" she said, and a crystal formed around the dying, hollowfying shinigami, rendering him frozen, as if within the slightly clouded crystal, time had stopped. She made the material of the crystal more opaque than usual such that none of the shinigami who had arrived would be able to see what awful fate had befallen their comrade. Her black butterfly finally caught up with her and she murmured for it to fetch the holers- those members of the kidoshu adept at stitching together such holes in space. Blod used her reiatsu to help her lift the crystal but it wasn't all that heavy- it wouldn't last forever but now she was out of combat and didn't have to worry about the cacophany around her, she could at least sustain it until she got to the 12th division headquarters.
"Tell me exactly what happened here." Blod commanded the approaching shinigami, her face now soft with sadness and her ocean blue eyes glistening. She had placed the tall crystal containing their comrade down next to her. Sustaining both barriers, she suddenly realized, would be no mean feat. And as such she sat down, cross-legged in order to concentrate until the holers could arrive.
Name: Bakudo #99 Kinjitou no Tenshimune (Heavenly Gifted Will of the Pyramid) Class: Kido Type: Defensive Tier: VII Range: 50 meter Incantation: "White demon, black demon. Earth obeys my orders, Heaven guards my soul."
Description:The ultimate defensive Bakudō, capable of defending the user against virtually any attacks, those lower ranked cannot even dream of breaking this pyramid-shaped green barrier with even a Hakkeshou. While those equal ranked and higher with a similar level Kidou would dent and eventually finally destroy the barrier. This barrier is unique in that it can guard not only a single person, but an entire group of people from an onslaught of attacks. This barrier can be held up for immense periods of time before it finally collapses due to strain.
A Shinigami attempting to learn this Kidou must be at least of the rank AL.
One must have specialized Kido mastery to be able to learn this kido. Note: Must be in Kidoshu to obtain specialized kido.
Name: Bakudo #?? Kyodainakesshōwana (巨大な結晶罠) [Giant Crystal Trap] Class: Kido Type: Bakudo Tier: VI/VII Range: 30m Incantation: "Old Gods, new keys, bring the six pointed key into the lock and turn!" Description: This kido creates a crystal around the target at cero speed, which solidifies, completely crystalising them. They're unable to perform any actions or see or hear anything in the outside world for the duration of time they're sealed, effectively rendering them in suspended animation.
"We're not entirely sure what happened. We had orders to come out here, to stop the sudden appearance of hollows. We were told nothing about the circumstances, and if we'd known fucking adjuchas were showing up, we would've had a lot more than four of us."
Shio glanced towards the speaker, and was rather impressed to see that they weren't ogling the opaque crystal, or trying to shout their disapproval to the euthanization they had all just witnessed. To be frank it left Shio feeling somewhat sick to his stomach, imagining having to slaughter these people like this, even for a good cause. He rested his hands in his laps, biting his tongue quite dutifully, hoping beyond all hope that no one would feel a need to bring up his own contribution to the circumstance...or lack thereof, to be more frank. His own expression was as neutral as they came, a faintly curious smile that made it seem like they were all just gathered around at a book club, or something of the sort. The smell of blood hardly seemed pertinent, if one were to take his expression at face value. But the smell rolling off of him was...less pleasant than usual. It had been apples when they had first arrived, a fresh and almost pleasant smell of apples as if one were preparing to bake a pie. But now it was almost too sweet, filled with the faint overtones of rot and overripeness.
He finally inhaled, glancing over his shoulder at...something on the ground. It was small, ever so small, barely even noticeable to a normal person. But the moment Shio noticed it, alarm bells seemed to clatter in his head, his body lurching to a standing position, only to lean forward in an overly formal bow, his voice breathless, as if he had just been punched in the gut.
"Shio Mora, Division One. Soshi Blodeuwen, the Kido Corps keeps track of all Senkaimon and similar methods of travel, yes? Are there any records of transportation into or out of this district in the hour or two preceeding?"
Post by Blodeuwen Hirashi on Feb 6, 2016 5:06:15 GMT
One of Blodeuwen's eyebrows arched as she heard what seemed to be a complaint about a lack of numbers. For soldiers these shinigami didn't seem to be particularly diligent, the four of them together ought to have had much less trouble, and perhaps their friend had paid the price for that. Her face fell into a frown.
"I would appreciate if you would refrain from cussing." her words were polite but her tone was frosty. "I am disappointed. Four shiniami of your strength ought to have held your own a little longer than this. I shall have to let your taicho know to drill more discipline into you. Your friend," she paused for a moment to tap the person-sized giant crystal before her, "has paid the price for your incompetence. He is suspended and I shall see if he can be healed, though I very much doubt it. If I release him from this prison, a fate far worse than death awaits." her tone was ominous. Apart from anything else, Blod needed a body, evidence that her actions in killing the others were justified such that she would be let off. Her actions had been taken to bring balance to soul society.
One of the shinigami made an astute observation. It was good to know that shinigami these days were at least moderately educated. There was an enormous clanging noise and Blod looked up. Beyond the bright green pyamid was a hollow. It looked deadly strong but she knew her barrier could hold no matter what it did. Her eyes shut as she held concentration, maintaining the incredibly strong barrier around the hole as well as the one that all but stopped time in her crystal.
"The shinigami who will be able to look at the senkaimon records approach even as we speak. But the hollow through there is an adjuchas class menos, a strong one at that. I can make the barrier open to let you in- please kill it. I can't realistically use any more spells while maintaining these two, and the holers won't be able to fix anything if there's a monster trying to eat them." She had said please but her tone implied it wasn't a question. After that, she settled down into implacable calm, feeling the hollowfication of the shinigami in the crystal getting more potent ever so slowly. Not even she could completely stop it without using forbidden techniques- which had gotten one of her predecessors kicked out of soul society.
"Our incompetence!? You're fucking kidding me! All due respect, Hirashi-sama, but you have no idea what we're capable of. You've been here two minutes!"
The speaker, a male shinigami with dusky blonde hair and a long gash on one knuckle, leaking blood towards his palm and onto the ground, was drawing himself up to the very pinnacle of his size, eyes puffy from what only could've been tears. It was obvious that he was sneaking glances at the opaque crystal, as if trying to get a better look inside. His every movement seemed to give off an air of indignation, and his words were almost painfully acidic. And as Shio stood just behind him, trying his best to keep his expression neutral, he felt his heart harden and blacken with each word, felt his veins shrivel and shrink as he tried to keep his cool. He could be seen tensing ever so slightly each time the word 'we' or 'us' was spoken, as if he were only barely biting back a retort. And still the man kept going, apparently having built up a head of steam.
"None of us were picked for our combat expertise. We were called in here to create a perimeter, to keep hollows from escaping and causing problems! We weren't told we'd be going toe-to-toe with Menos! That's not incompetence, that's shitty intel! And even -then-, even when we were attacked by those...monstrosities...we held the perimeter! We minimized casualties until reinforcements arrived Hirashi-sama, and not a single hollow escaped the perimeter! We did our jobs, it's not our fault if our orders were bad!"
Shio could barely believe what he was hearing being said. What did this guy think he was doing!? Speaking so...bluntly to the Kido Soshi was insane. He was clearly in grief, just as clearly trying his best to keep his cool as his eyes darted towards the stasis prison over and over, trying to catch his breath and find his words. Shio already knew every possible outcome from this argument, from this...insubordination. At best, he'd be court martialled, thrown into some prison and allowed to rot. At worst...summary execution. Shio's hand lowered slowly, fingers feeling numb from the tight fist he'd made, to rest against the hilt of his tanto in preparation for whatever came next.
"Going up there...is suicide. Not a single one of us would make it out, even if we could kill it. That thing would tear us to -shreds-. You're telling us to die for our transgressions, plain and simple. One of us...one of my friends. Already threw his life away for his orders. You can't have the rest, just because you're mad that you had to dirty your hands."
Post by Blodeuwen Hirashi on Feb 9, 2016 11:49:04 GMT
Her eyes flashed open as soon as he began shouting. The more she heard, the higher a single blonde eyebrow rose, oceanic eyes turning gradually more frigid. Yet still the shinigami continued. She wasn't sure if he had a death wish, or was merely incredibly dense. Perhaps he considered it better to die by her hand than to be eaten by a hollow- not unreasonable. But Blod would kill none of these shinigami herself. She did not approve of such things and she had enough blood on her hands already anyway, no. Genryuusai would know about this and could punish his subordinates accordingly. Blodeuwen felt that incurring the Captain-Commander's wrath would be punishment enough given how disrespectful the hotheaded shinigami had been and how old fashioned old man Yama could be.
As she heard him complete his final paragraph, she realized that he was just plain stupid and not really fit for field work- let them stick him on janitorial duty or something. If he made it out of this alive, that was. In the mean time, she remained seated, not feeling the least bit vulnerable facing the three standing shinigami.
"If you're quite done." she said flatly- there was no point in raising her voice and lowering herself. The dry, almost sardonic drawl of her voice seemed to inspire far more terror anyway. "It is possible for shinigami to tell a lot about the strength of another simply by examining them. For example he," she indicated at Shio with a tilt of the head, "is the strongest amongst you, the level of a seated shinigami in a fairly low-numbered seat. You both are weaker but from your spiritual pressure alone not considerably so. In fact... Yes- you all are strong enough that you are undoubtedly possessed of the shikai release of your zanpakuto." she said matter-of-factly. "Yes, you are all at the level of seated-strength shinigami. The hollow up there is an adjuchas class menos. It is the level of a weak lieutenant. The three of you could defeat a lieutenant class opponent if you teamed up and used your full strength." she continued, brusquely. "Furthermore, if I go to fight this opponent, the barrier will break and more will flood into the rukon districts. You did an insufficient job due to not utilising your full strength against your opponents- many people have died as a result. Your friend is currently frozen- should you obey my commands we will have him stabilized and potentially healed. Your duty of soldiers of the gotei 13 is to protect the soul society no matter the cost to yourselves. You give one hundred percent and succeed, or you give one hundred per cent and you die. There is no middle-ground. The captain-commander will be hearing about your insubordination." This sentence sounded particularly icy, almost a hint of venom crept into her tone. "He will not be particularly pleased. Now go." there would be very little scope for ignoring that command without committing what amounted to high treason. In fact, Blod could tell that the three, if they were even the least bit co-ordinated would have the adjuchas out-matched on raw power alone, and all three had trained as soldiers- it had no such luxury. Her eyes closed once more.
And there it was. There she went, blabbing it off like it didn't even matter! Shio was almost prepared to scream, to join his voice with the blonde shinigami, who was even now inhaling for another tirade. Why couldn't people just let it go? Why couldn't they just stop dragging these things into the public eye? Shio didn't even bother to hear what his comrade was screaming this time; something about 'potential'. He'd heard enough, and if Blodeuwen's face was any indication, she had as well. His hand flashed out in a quick, precise arc, the hilt of his tanto peeking out from the end, extending perhaps an inch after. It struck the blonde just above his eye, leaving him stumbling and dazed...and before he had even finished his movement forward Shio had circled around in front of him, landing a second strike against the shinigami's temple. It lasted all of a second, and it was completely textbook; the man collapsed into a pile of unresponsive muscle before he could even speak another word.
Shio's gaze met Blodeuwen's, and there was...nothing there. Absolutely nothing. He couldn't even be called angry, or disgusted at this point. It looked almost like he had retreated into himself entirely, had cut off his facial muscles entirely, or somehow managed to numb himself in the span of a split second. He was getting sick and tired of this conversation, of this entire situation. And as he looked down at his comrade, fingers already twitching, he finally spoke in a calm, incredibly precise tone. As if he were doing nothing very important, rather than standing over the body of a comrade he had incapacitated in less than the time it took to speak his name.
"He was approaching the point of gross insubordination. He should recover within a minute or two."
He turned to the only remaining shinigami, bowing his head slightly, only to disappear in a rippling flash of motion...reappearing just behind him, slamming the hilt of his blade into their flesh, one hand wrapped around the waist to ensure he couldn't escape or respond. His eyes were bulging, and he had just barely managed to grasp his weapon in the time it took Shio to speak, but now his fingers were fluttering, losing strength as Shio's weapon flashed downwards twice more, each time striking with precision, and incredible force. When he felt this one go limp, he gingerly lowered him to the ground, turned to Blodeuwen, and sighed. It was a deep, heavy experience, something that seemed to make his entire body tremble.
"This was never about them, was it. I'll take the court martial, all the same. I'd...appreciate it if what happens next stays off the record."

They didn't go. She was starting to find it kind of hard to concentrate, realistically. She could feel the adjuchas bouncing off of her barrier, as well as the ever so slowly increasing hollowfication of the shinigami inside the chrysalis-like bakudo. Did these idiots not realize that when the holers arrived- which they would in a moment or two, Blodeuwen could feel them approaching- that unless that adjuchas was gone they wouldn't be able to perform their duty? Every second the life of their comrade slipped away further- if the hollow infection could not be expunged before manifesting in his inner world, he would be executed for acquiring illegal hollow powers, his life forfeit either way. But before the man facing her could speak so much as another word, he was felled. The decomission of the next shinigami was quick, though all three of them moved achingly slowly compared to Blodeuwen herself. She almost considered apprehending him there but keeping three high level kido operating at once would be difficult to say the least- especially since the two she had in operation were already a number 99 and a number 76 spell.
She said nothing at Shio's next remark however, neither accepting his wishes nor denying them. Her mind was spinning- what on earth was he talking about? Not about them? Who the hell did he think he was, what was this attitude he had. She threw her mind back- what could he have done to deserve court martial? Was it that he had held back at the start of the battle? That was possibly it but Blod appreciated that it wasn't a totally stupid move. She assumed that it was some combination of that and something she couldn't work out. If he tried to go after the adjuchas alone, however, she would revive his comrades- that would be stupid despite how strong he was. Why refuse back-up? She understood knocking out the blonde shinigami who had given her lip- he would definitely be getting a demotion, but the other? Was this just some bravado arrogance thing? Some kind of 'I work alone' edgelord mentality? She turned it over and over in her head, wondering what to do.
Again, Shio didn't speak a single word as he craned his head up towards the barrier, seeming to drink in the details carefully. This...thing was big, but there was only one, and it was hard to make out fine details through the barrier. But he already knew there was no way he could get out of this unless he resolved this situation quickly and efficiently...before anyone else managed to arrive and assess the situation. The best ally Shio had here was speed, and a quick response would be the best way to ensure that he could hide what had happened here, that they could coordinate their stories...and that they could ensure this wouldn't come back to bite him in the ass.
Shio disappeared in a swish of motion and a blur, standing just in front of the barrier with a hand resting against it. Now, he could see the beast better; it looked remarkably like a dragon, and it seemed almost to be looking -back at him-. He inhaled, turning back towards Blodeuwen and raising a hand to the air, lifting his zanpakuto as he did. He spoke clearly, as if he were incanting to the world at large.
"Break and mend, Taroba."
His weapon disappeared, seeming to go up in a puff of smoke...before coalescing into a thick hunk of wax, looking like it must have weighed nearly thirty or fourty pounds from the sheer size and width of it. A long black wick extended from behind it, and as he lifted it to his shoulder, letting it rest there, his other hand rose, fingers spreading wide as he inhaled. There was no time to waste, no need to contemplate the possibilities at this moment. All he could do was end this, and get back to the life he had grown so used to.
"The long awaited Festival of the Dead begins! Cheer for those who are lost to the heavens, for you shall soon be joining them!"
He wasn't sure if he'd be able to make the most of it before it was too late, but even as the thick greenish barrier formed around his opponent, he darted forward, through the barrier, and then closed his hand into a fist, causing the interior to light up with an eerie greenish-red light, obscuring the view inside. Shio's hand never slid away from his weapon, nor did his gaze move from the barrier. He wasn't going to let anyone else die simply for his own petty comfort.
Name: Bakudo #46 Inshitsu Chōchin (Devious Paper Lantern)
Class: Kido
Type: Binding
Tier: IV
Range: 30 Meters
Incantation: The long awaited Festival of the Dead begins! Cheer for those who are lost to the heavens, for you shall soon be joining them!
Description: The opponent is surrounded by a barrier in the shape of a green paper lantern, with openings above and below. At the caster's call, fire shoots into the lantern barrier from the openings, charring the one trapped inside.
As the prey approached the barrier that entrapped it the beast settles down on all fours in the center of the barrier, tail angrily whipping back and forth. Embers of red could be seen spilling over the sides of its maw as it waited for the opportune moment to strike, a moment that came soon enough when a hole formed in the barrier to let the prey inside.
The beast wasted no time. The very moment it spotted the barrier start to open the beast let loose the Cero it was charging up in its mouth aimed straight down the opening. Before the beast could see what effect his attack had what looked like green paper burned into existence around him, blocking his view. A more inexperienced fighter might have been taken aback by its sudden appearance, but long desperate existence on the fields of Hueco Mundo have taught the beast that stillness in a battle is death. It was already in movement the moment the energy was released, spiraling upwards with a powerful sweep of its wings. Luckily it had done so, as no sooner had the paper lantern been constructed then its insides erupted into a bright conflagration. Even moving as fast as the beast did, the embers of the fire still licked at its tail.
There was limited room to maneuver in the green, pyramid shaped barrier and less all the time as a new star sparked to life within the barrier to join the three others already twinkling away inside the barrier. Still, though, flight was the beast's best recourse. By taking a sinuous, winding path through the air and ducking behind and around the stars it would make itself a difficult target to hit with any retaliatory strikes from the prey.

The technique hardens the user's spiritual pressure and fires it at around twenty times the speed of a Cero. Default ability for Arrancar and Adjuchas Hollow
This beast was clearly quite seasoned, or it had exceptional speed and reflexes. The very moment that barrier opened, it struck, its own attack charged and poised to release. Apparantly, this hollow had even outpaced him, by whatever small a margin. Shio glanced at the attack, saw it coming in his direction, and disappeared with an odd swishing sound, glancing down at his side...to see a sizable portion of his hip had been struck by the attack, and was already swelling and growing purple. There was almost certainly a break in the bones there, but he could still stand, and the pain wasn't yet unbearable. He could see that the enemy, in comparison, had gotten out of it far safer. He inhaled once more, swapping his weapon to another hand and beginning to weave it about slowly. There was something odd about the area between him and the beast, filled as it was with odd heat shimmers that seemed to warp the very air around them. He inhaled slowly, and swung his weapon up towards the sky in front of him. As he did, his other hand flashed upwards to clamp around the wick of his zanpakuto, snuffing it out.
Immediately, wax sloughed off with staggering speed, striking up towards the barrier above them. It seemed, for a split second, like nothing at all would happen...but before the adjuchas could even get a proper bearing of what was happening above, Shio let out an ululating wail, tossing his zanpakuto towards the creature. It had taken a form that resembled nothing so much as a tomahawk, already midway in flight...its movement was quite impressive, no doubt holding enough impact to punch through most light armors.
Description: By flicking his zanpakuto upwards at the same time he snuffs out the wick, Shio can create a sizable glob of wax that breaks up and solidifies in midair. After a post of setup, the globs begin to rain around him, striking nearby areas at random at half bala speeds. These globs are each as heavy as an equivalent amount of steel, making them deadly projectiles if they're capable of hitting his enemies. This ability has the downside that Shio can't predict or control where they land, meaning even he is at risk of being hit if he moves too far from his initial position. The candle creates effectively limitless wax, allowing him to use this technique as many times as he deems necessary while released within the cooldown limits. Cooldown 1 post.
Name: Metamorphosis
Class: Zanpakuto Spirit
Tier: III
Type: Supplementary
Range: Self
Description: By snuffing out the wick atop his shikai, Shio is capable of allowing his shikai to lose its rigidity, becoming as malleable as the wax it's made of. While in this form he can remold and forge the zanpakuto, allowing it to take on whatever new weapon form he prefers.

Blodeuwen had expanded her Kinjitou no Tenshimune that was keeping the hollow inside and isolating the hole into the dangai, in order to include Shio as soon as he had approached it. It would be no mean feat for him to escape it now, as she couldn't risk letting a hollow free while she maintained the link- a vasto lorde class opponent or even an arrancar would easily be able to break into soul society if she had to stop her pyramid-shaped barrier. No- Shio would be in there until the adjuchas died or fled. In the meantime, she set to work reviving the others. It was virtually impossible to simply knock unconscious a person who didn't already have brain issues, and so she had little trouble in fixing the severe winding and concussions both had suffered, restoring their reiryoku a little as she did so.
It would take a few moments more before they were back on their feet and so Blodeuwen was content to sit and watch the battle. Realistically, if Shio died it would be of little consequence in the grand scheme- if Blodeuwen could hold her barrier open until a shinigami strong enough to ensure the holers' safety while they underwent their work, that was all that mattered. But not all shinigami achieved their shikai, and so it would be wasteful. The faster she could return his squadmates to the fray, the higher his chances for survival. As soon as she'd let him in the hollow had attacked with a powerful cero, the blast smashing him in the side before he managed to flash step away. He responded with his own kido, which was performed fairly well but for which the incantation had been used. She was a touch disappointed that he had used it as it cost him valuable time. She turned to the chrysalis beside her, able to see through the crystal to the shinigami with thick white ooze in his wounds which moved ever so slowly.
The Beast took a wide circling path around the top of the barrier while keeping a watch on the prey out of the corner of its eye. When the gob of wax was shot up the Beast’s eyes flickered to it only long enough to confirm that it would not hit and classify it as not (an immediate) threat before the combination of movement in its peripheral vision and the prey’s shout alerts it to the thrown weapon.
It takes some desperate flapping to pull the Beast up short enough to avoid the blade, but he quickly made up for his awkward dodge by putting on a new burst of speed, an odd sparkling gas pouring off his scales and quickly obscuring the Beast, as he circles around to come at the prey from the other side.
A stream of Bala spits out from the dark cloud, kicking up dirt like a fighter plane making a strafing run as the blasts crawled towards the prey.

Shio's eyes widened ever so slightly as he watched the adjuchas avoid his attack, by an ever-so-narrow margin. There were only a few explanations for why it would've avoided by such a small amount, when it could've taken a much safer, much wider margin. Either it was remarkably meticulous, or it was very very reckless and simply had luck and reflexes on its side. The two could end in remarkably different ways, and there was nothing but his own gut to go off of. But no hollow this powerful and this old lasted on sheer luck. Clearly, its own battle instincts had been well-honed, as evidenced by the fact that it hadn't thrown up some hasty defense when it saw him flinging a mass of wax towards the roof. Shio could only surmise that this hollow was as careful as any shinigami would've been.
That was good. Shio was quite confident any careful, meticulous shinigami would write him off as a non-issue almost immediately. There wasn't any real benefit to being in the spotlight, to getting dragged into the public eye. Captains weren't a threat for their intimidation status, captains weren't meant to be some kind of...idol, some symbol of virtue and power. No matter what anyone said, a captain didn't need the position to do what they did. A captain led men, and a captain solved problems. Plain and simple, that was all; Shio would do his job, would do what needed to be done, and he needed no one else to tell him what his job was, what he needed to do.
He noticed, just a second too late, that this...thing was already preparing a counterattack. Projectiles, hundreds of them, seemed to be firing out from the area towards him, through the enormous cloud of blazing heat. The first handful went wide, missing him entirely...but as it continued to move, Shio noticed the attacks were moving in a perfect line, no doubt following its own motions. He allowed the platform of reishi beneath his feet to weaken, forcing him to fall for nearly a dozen feet before he solidified once more, pushing off and diving forward into a roll, speaking in a deep, resonant tone with remarkable poise and speed. He rose a hand, causing a golden spray of light to flash outwards, dispersing the few smattered blasts left that were coming towards him.
"The skies blacken and your foul deeds are for naught. Oh dark and tremulous being, be undone."
This adjuchas was his responsibility. Those lives, their blood...all of it was on his hands. No one could wash that away, and no sort of recognition would change what had happened. He inhaled slowly, closing his eyes...and as he did, the world seemed to shrink, everything outside of the barrier falling away. His hand grasped at the wick of his zanpakuto, hands almost whitening from the force of his squeezing. He yanked back on the corded wire, causing his weapon to return to himself. As his other hand lowered to his side, grasping the burning end of his release, and feeling as much as seeing as he could've felt his own hand or his leg. He reached a hand out, eyes widening ever so slightly, nearly blinded by the remarkable light displays around himself, the heat shimmer surrounding the enemy. And as he extended a hand, he began to incant, ever so slowly.
"The crest of turbidity. Oozing...no. No. Seeping. The crest of turbidity, seeping out. An insolent vessel of madness..."
His mind raced, words flowing past at the speed of thought, leaving him incredibly distracted, trying his best to remember, to whip his own soul into a proper frenzy...he stared in silence, simply hoping beyond hope that he could find something new to capitalize on here before it killed him.
Death alone wouldn't be proper atonement for what he'd done.

The prey was hesitating and the beast did not know why. It only had a moment to consider this before the ball of wax the prey launched up earlier cracks apart and large shots of wax start raining down.
A few hit the beast, heavier and more powerful than could be expected from such a flimsy material, before it could react. In rage the beast gathered the red embers of a cero in its mouth and unleashed the blast with a loud roar.
To the prey, they would have seen a bright red beam blasting out of the beast's cloud that would twisting and snapping around like a snake due to the star's gravity as the Beast sweeps it through the raining balls of wax and down at the prey.
Just that wasn't enough. As the light from the Cero faded a low growl escaped from the Beast's lips. It fired off a wide volley of Bala. Some were aimed at the Prey to force it to dodge back or get hit, but the main target was the three stars nearest to the prey each of which starts to glow brighter and brighter until they were almost painful to look at.

The shinigami were virtually healed. They stood up, and Blod immediately directed their attention to the giant green pyramid containing the fight above. They looked like they were about to question or argue with her but by the look on her face they could tell that it wasn't a good idea. Even the blonde, bearded shinigami seemed somewhat lost for words.
"Either you go up there and help him, or he dies, and his blood is on your hands." she said, simply. That might not necessarily have been true but if it was the battle up there should have gone a lot faster. She raised an eyebrow as more and more energy was released above her. It was still no difficulty to contain it but holding the barrier up was the biggest strain. In fact despite the barrier being larger and sturdier than the crystal keeping the remaining shinigami in stasis, it was somehow much easier to obtain. It was an older kido, one she had learned from a scroll in the library- she could see why someone had taken the effort to write it down. The shinigami all shot off toward the barrier- she would let them through when they approached it, sealing it shut behind them.
Meanwhile she felt an approaching reiatsu signature- the holers. There were only two and they seemed to be carrying a large needle, the height of a person, and a spool of thread with them. It was the twins, gate guardians. Kila and Thila, she thought their names were. They wore the standard kido corps uniform, face veils included. They bowed deeply to her when she arrived and she nodded, while they began threading the needle.
"Mistress Blod those are very impressive Bakudo." Kila said with a smile. Thila made an affirmative noise, a large piece of thread between gritted teeth. She smiled elegantly at them.
"Difficult Bakudo. I would chastise you for taking your time getting here but for the fact that we're not ready any way." she told them gently. Her voice seemed to take on a slightly deeper timbre when addressing her underlings- a warm rich tone as opposed to the almost airy one that accompanied her usually.
"We apologize Soshi-sempai. We were patching up a girl from a noble family who just got back. She was with her cousin in the tenth division." Blod focused and then unfocused her eyes- Senta was in the fourth division was he not? But she realized that Gujo was her only other nephew. There was extended family but none of them served the gotei 13- she put the issue to the back of her mind. "We were the first ones to get the call so we finished up and headed out immediately." she continued and Blodeuwen nodded before smiling once more.
"Understandable. I shan't put your lives at risk sending you into the fray but one of you be prepared to run for help in case those idiots can't neutralize the threat." she told them, and they descended into squabbling over who would go and stay.
