Ah, Saturday. The first of a pair of days where Honoka Fabrics was typically closed, and its proprietor, Honoka Daichi, went out of town for a time. Specifically, he went to Soul Society, but none of his clients knew that. After all, it wasn't like he could post a sign on the door; "Gone to the afterlife. Back Monday." Today, he was going to work on an area he lacked a bit of skill in. Not Kido; he didn't feel like having another Shakkaho blow up in his face. Today, he was going to work on Hakuda, or rather, the application of Karate to Hakuda, since he wasn't trained in the classic Shinigami style of hand-to-hand.
The substitute shinigami took the training field and stretched for a time before beginning to go through his kata, waiting for somebody to show up to spar with. After drilling a couple forms, he moved over to a section of the training ground with dummies and began drilling with the stuffed opponents. Puffs of blue reiatsu raised from the site of the hits, but the dummy remained intact; he really didn't want to replace it, and he needed to practice his technique, not push his strength.
Name: Au Batido (Broken Cartwheel) Tier IV Class: Hand to Hand Type: Defensive Range: Close Description: The user begins a cartwheel towards their opponent, guarding their face with one hand while supporting their body on the other, usually in response to an attack. Using the momentum of the cartwheel, they kick or push the oncoming attack away before falling back or moving to the side. If used when no attack is being countered, the user kicks and pushes their opponent away, creating distance and allowing them to move around the field freely.
Name: Escorpiao (Scorpion Kick) Tier IV Type: Offensive Range: Close Description: The user brings their body down to the ground, pivoting on their leading leg while using the momentum to bring their back leg up to kick an opponent standing in front of them. This attack is very hard to see coming and is often mistaken for a low dodge before the kick comes up to strike with the sole or heel of the back foot.
Name: Martelo (Hammer) Tier III Type: Offensive Range: Close Description: This is the bread and butter of the capoeira school for offense, being the most common attack with many variants and types spawning from this very simple kick. It functions almost exactly like a roundhouse kick, but requires less lead up and in the hands of a master can’t be seen coming.
Gaen had wandered up to the Hakuda training field on this lovely Saturday morning, trying to make use of his day off to help train up his skills. He wasn’t going to his division’s training dojo for one specific reason: Fourth division didn’t really have one. There was a place in the building meant for combat training, but it was presently being used as a storage space for excess beds and food trays, so there was a bit too much clutter to freely train in. Now, despite being a medic, Gaen felt he really needed to work on his fighting skills since there had been a recent encounter that could have come to a much better outcome had he been in better fighting shape. Right now he was endeavouring to bolster his combative repertoire with a few moves he had practiced briefly with a friend, but needed a little more work to bring them into full muscle memory.
When he got up to the field, he dropped his medical bag, and shuffled his upper robes off, showing the lack of right arm and impressive array of scars decorating his right side. He fished out a roll of gauze, wrapping the strip of fabric around his stump to hide the unpleasant sight as much as he could. He personally didn’t mind his scars, they didn’t bother him at all physically, but he didn’t want to worry or bother anybody else who may come up to the training field. He would have just kept his robes on, but unfortunately, the flowing fabric interfered with his particular martial art.
He grabbed his bag and robes, walking over to the training dummies where he first spotted a fellow busily smacking one of the unmoving sparring partners. It was Gaen’s intent as well to hit one of the dummies, but a living breathing person to train with was always preferable despite the possibility of mutual harm.
Hi there! Um, if it’s not too much to ask, would you mind horribly if I joined you? Gaen asked, a quick bow mixed in with his request.

Daichi finished the last two steps of the kata before turning to see the man who had spoken to him; bad habits were much easier to ingrain than good ones, as he'd been told several times, so it was important to not pause during a kata. Speed wasn't important; rhythm was. He was mildly surprised to see that the shinigami who'd spoken was missing an arm, but he didn't let that affect his judgment. To paraphrase the great Terry Pratchett, never underestimate handicapped martial artists. This shinigami might not be a smiling bald man, but the principle probably still applied. He smiled and nodded. "Of course. It's much easier to learn with a sparring partner." He gestured to the open space just a short distance off, a circle of level ground cleared of dummies.
Taking a spot near the center of the small circle, Daichi bowed to his opponent as he introduced himself. "My name is Honoka Daichi, First Squad Substitute Shinigami. May I ask yours?" He kept his friendly grin; not a huge smile, but he was pretty glad to meet someone new to train with. It would beat getting his butt kicked by the Onmitsukido when they came to practice. Not that he didn't learn a lot from it, just that it was the same fight over and over. He was eager to see how a shinigami with one arm would fight.
My name is Gaen, unseated, Fourth division. He said in reply to Honoka’s introduction, though he was a little surprised at the substitute Shinigami part. Gaen had never met one of their living proxies from the moral plane, which made enough sense he supposed. It was a fairly rare instance for a substitute Shinigami to be conscripted, let alone make trips to the hospital. He briefly wondered how they took care of their injuries and such without a medical detachment in the human realm, but figured they probably went to human hospitals instead. It made Gaen think about inquiring after semi-permanent medical facilities for the field, which would be handy for emergency cases with patrols, as well as the substitutes. He made a mental note to look into that as he walked over to the ‘sparing ring’ which was just a cleaned up circular patch of dirt.
Gaen stayed near the edge of the circle, bowing in respect and as the ‘technically’ official beginning to their spar. He dropped into a low stance, shifting his body weight back and forth as his feet moved rhythmically, as if he could hear some music in the distance that he was dancing to. His one good arm changed position in front of his face from left to right guard in pace with his feet.
So, did you come to the Seireitei just to train? He asked as he bolted forward in a quick jump, planting his hand as he landed to cartwheel closer to Daichi. He landed within kicking distance, using the momentum to bring his foot up into a very sudden round house kick aimed at the substitute shinigami’s right shoulder. Because Soul Society has some interesting tourist attracitons most overlook in their day to day if you’re interested after this. Gaen said happily, indulging in an odd habit he had of talking during fights. He didn’t like ‘just fighting’ and having a pleasant conversation during a spar helped take his mind off the fact that he was trying to knock somebody silly.
Name: Capoeira Class: Hand To Hand Technique Type: Supplementary Range: Self. Tier: N/A Description: Capoeira is a style that was created heavily around concealment that it is, infact, a style. Used by slaves to better protect themselves, it was hidden from their masters and instead shown as a 'dance' as those who were slaves or considered property couldn't not learn to defend themselves, lest they get their head removed. The main style to Capoeira is the ginga, which is a literal term for "swinging back and forth", or to "dance in one place". The ginga is that of keeping one predominant foot in place as the other leg swings the opposite way, switching only when the motion comes back around, making a literal swinging motion but staying within one place. This motion was heavily used to stop the enemy from hitting or harming the user of Capoeira in the slightest, and to better set up for feints, blocks, and fakes, leaving the opponent open to attacks while the user of Capoeira was always in motion and thus lacks an opening. The attacks with Capoeira are used with the legs, either acting as powerful blows to the main body or vital points, or as takedowns, in which the user would take down the target in question without falling down themselves and then use the higher ground to deliver kicks to areas in which they could cause fatal injuries. Defense, on the other hand, is focused mainly around moving with the punch or outright dodging, it's name being esquivas. Blocks would only be utilized when esquivas cannot be used under any circumstances, showing for the lack of such techniques.

Honoka Daichi nodded as Gaen introduced himself, trying to commit the Shinigami's name to memory. His rather unique appearance would help with that; not many Shinigami running around with one arm and a half. It'd be nice to remember at least one name on the first try. The man's fighting style was unique, too. Daichi hadn't seen it before, anyway. It almost looked like he was dancing. He really couldn't afford that distraction, though; the Shinigami's movements seemed almost too chaotic to be real; a jump, into a dive, into a cartwheel, and Daichi almost didn't realize that it wasn't just movement and there was a kick coming out of that cartwheel. He shifted his stance to the side and raised his arm to block, the impact resulting in an audible thud against the muscle of the Substitute's arm, as opposed to the shoulder that had been Gaen's intended target.
"Yeah, I mostly come to practice. It's hard to find a human that can keep up with a Shinigami, and even if I practice in human form it doesn't help me much when I'm fighting in Shinigami form. The reflexes are what I need to train at this point; I have the kata." He doesn't mind the conversation at all; it is rather pleasant, even if he was engaged in a fight with the other party. He advanced forward and threw a feint at Gaen's bad right arm with his left, hoping to make the Shinigami evade towards Daichi's right side. He aborted the false attack halfway through and sent his real punch with his right arm, hoping to catch his opponent in the stomach. It wouldn't be a full force hit, they were just sparring, but it would not be a pleasant feeling if Gaen had fallen for the feint.
Gaen felt his blow come in contact with the Daichi's arm, reflexively pulling his foot back to lessen the blow. There was a sharp thud sound, but Gaen hoped that his sparring partner didn't feel that too badly. He looks well practiced, probably uses his arms for blocking a lot, most likely didn't feel a thing. He thought as he watched how Daichi moved. He followed through with the round house kick and flowed back into his lower 'dancing' stance, bobbing and weaving in his rhythmic pattern.
That's a shame that you only come here to train, I mean, the view from Sokyoku hill is really breath taking! He said, remembering the last time he had gone up to the former execution grounds. It was actually a little ironic that the place where such a gruesome ritual had taken place so many times had the most stunning view of Seireitei that you could find. The last time he had been up there was the during the cherry blossom festival, and it was quite beautiful. It had made him wish he knew how to use the camera on the phone thingamjig they gave him. Still, he could understand him trying to use his time here productively since a commute through dimensions wasn't something one wanted to have to do particularly regularly. He wondered why reflexes wouldn't transfer from the physical to the spiritual body though, trying to riddle out why the biology would become a stopping point. It was true though that shinigami operated on a much faster level than the average human, and substitutes, as far as he was aware, had very limited access to their rietsu in their human form. He logged the idea as something that required a little more study, maybe he could visit the library and look the matter up more closely.
He watched as Daichi came in with a left punch aiming towards his right side, which made sense. Gaen was most often attacked from that direction since the vast majority of his sparring partners (of which there were admittedly few) viewed it as his weak side. However, that would only be true if Gaen ever really defended with his arms, which was rare since his left arm acted more like a leg when he was in a fight. Gaen flipped onto his hand, bringing his left foot up to meet with Daichi's incoming fist to push the attack away. When the feint came to light, Gaen was literally upside-down and in no real danger of being punch in the stomach. However, to avoid being punched in the groin, Gaen switched which leg he was using to defend with. He didn't have time to do it properly of course, and what was supposed to be a fist meeting a foot became a fist coming in contact with a knee cap. It didn't hurt so much as feel a little funny, but Gaen was at least a little concerned for his sparring partners fist. He figured that the man likely had stern knuckles though and decided to press on.
He fell down to his forearm and side, using the speed of the fall to fuel the speed of his legs as he twisted his pelvis and brought his legs into a wide corkscrew sweeping motion. His aim was to take Daichi's legs out from under him because while Gaen was very comfortable fighting close to the ground, few others were and it gave him an advantage against the very, very many fighters with more experience than him. Hey, I'm sort of curious, how does one actually get a job as a substitute shinigami? It's not like you can just submit a resume or join the academy while in the human realm. He asked as he tried to trip Daichi up.

"Sokyoku Hill? Didn't they use that place for executions up until recently?" Daichi had to admit, the conversation was extremely pleasant compared to the usual silent duels with serious hakuda experts like the Onmitsukido. The substitute had not anticipated theh unorthodox method that Gaen used to defend from the feinted punch, and Daichi found himself committed to a nut shot. He'd be lying if he said he wasn't relieved when his fist connected with a kneecap instead of that particularly sensitive region.
The counterattack was entirely unexpected. Most people hated being on the ground for even a moment more than necessary, but Gaen obviously didn't fight like most people. Daichi felt his legs get swept out from under him and managed to adjust himself so that he fell without hurting himself. He planted a hand in the ground and lashed out with a wide kick, attempting to clear some space and buy time to stand; he used the momentum to fuel a back shoulder roll onto his feet.
The innocent-sounding question that the Shinigami voiced was a bit of a loaded topic. Sure, he'd agreed to join Crisis Core, but so many people had died. "Well, first, you need to be kidnapped by Kurotsuchi-taicho." There was no anger or malice in the attack as he attempted to catch Gaen with a kick; it was simply what happened to be a good option for the spar. Similarly, his voice wasn't angry when he kept speaking.
"Then you agree to experimemts whose mortality rate is well over 95%. Then you hope to get lucky. From what I now know of Kurotsuchi-taicho, we were lucky to be able to say no. Some of the abductees did, and they were mind-wiped and put back on the street. Very Men In Black, the whole thing."
Ya, it did used to be an execution ground, but it's never used for that anymore. Gaen said as he felt his feet come in contact with Daichi's leg and deftly knock them away. Most of the time it's just a big empty field, and it's easy to forget it's sordid history. He had often walked along that 'big empty field' and thought expressly of the places history, having been staunchly against capital punishment for the entirety of his memory. From what he understood, it was also largely against the rules here in Seireitei and needs very special and specific permission to be enacted. Still, he knew he shouldn't hold the history of a place against it, let the bad decisions of past men pollute what something could become. Like a lovely look out spot for instance. Knowing the sad fact that people had been killed there is an important reminder of things that should never be repeated, but it shouldn't subtract from the beauty of the world. He said as he followed through with his leg sweep and came back up to his feet, again in his back and forth swaying motion.
The wild kick from Daichi was a little too far off the mark as the man went into a backward roll, but it did stop Gaen from pursuing right away to press his advantage. It was around this moment that Daichi mentioned Kurotsuchi, and a chill ran down Gaen's spine. Gaen was of the opinion that no sentence ever began with 'Kurotsuchi' and ended well, so he wasn't particularly surprised that the following story involved human experimentation and a ludicrously high mortality rate. I find it hard to believe that this 'captain' is still getting away with such insane activities! Gaen said with no attempt to mask the contempt in his voice. If there were ever somebody that Gaen could say he actually 'hated' it was the twelfth division captain. Even the bloodthirsty and hyper violent captain of the eleventh division along with all of the combat divisions' inhabitant warranted a mild dislike with a similarly disliked understanding of why a division of those specialized in violence was considered necessary. It must have been a horrible experience! On behalf of Soul Society, I want to apologize for such inexcusable behaviour on our part! He said, fighting the reflex to stop fighting entirely to bow in respect and recompense. Daichi was here to hone his fighting skills, and in this Gaen was at least hoping to provide an adequate sparing partner.
He lunged forward and planted his hand, coming into a swift cartwheel and extending a leg to try and kick at Daichi's left thigh. It was an attempt to hobble the man with an attack to a major muscle group, but it was at this time that Gaen noted the kick that Daichi was coming forward with. As much as he tried to wriggle out of the way, the best Gaen could manage to do was put his ribcage in the line of fire. He felt Daichi's foot against his left side, an attack that certainly stung. Gaen tried to roll with the hit, not certain if his own blow had connected as he rolled back into his swinging stance.

"Like I said, we were lucky. We were unconscious for the whole thing, don't remember any of it. If the rumor mill has even a little truth in it, that's really more than we could expect from Kurotsuchi-taicho." The Substitute noticed Gaen's kick heading for his thigh, but followed through with his own attack, landing the blow to Gaen's left side before jumping into the air at an impressive speed, flipping over and trying to land behind the Shinigami and deliver a roundhouse kick accompanied by a discharge of deep-blue, sea-scented reiatsu that would blow Daichi's opponent back if it connected. It was Kihon, basically, but taken to a higher scale.
"Besides, you said you were unseated and Fourth Division. I doubt you were directly involved, and even if you were, it would've been to keep us alive. No reason for you to apologize." He shrugged before putting up a guard, regardless of his kick's success, ready to react to an attack if Gaen closed the distance or attempted to counter. His response to an attack would be a variation of Kumite, but breaking bones during a spar would be bad form; instead, he'd attempt to initiate the Oni Headpoke, which had worked exactly four times during his training. "At any rate, what are some other good places to visit here? I suppose I'd be remiss if I never saw any of the afterlife despite coming here almost every weekend."
Gaen was a little surprised when Daichi had mentioned that he considered himself lucky to have been at least unconscious during the whole experience with Kurotsuchi. While he would have to admit, if the choice was presented to him as to whether or not he had to be awake for a procedure of any variety, he would happily enjoy anaesthesia; however, he thought the 'bad luck' of being in Twelfth division for an operation was greater than any good fortune Daichi may have experienced. It was sort of like being stabbed in the stomach and considering yourself lucky that you didn't get both kidneys skewered. Being lucky in this instance would have been avoiding the whole terrible ordeal in the first place!
You have an astoundingly positive outlook on life. Gaen blurted out as Daichi flipped overhead, also realizing the irony of himself, a person usually considered hopelessly optimistic, noting another persons' overarching positivity. He spun on the ball of his foot as Daichi landed and saw the roundhouse kick coming, himself having used a similar strike earlier on in this very bout. Gaen pitched forward, bringing his hand down directly in front of him and raised up his right foot in retaliation to the roundhouse kick. Ideally, the kick would sail overhead and his foot would come forward to smack Daichi in the face with his heel.
While I personally didn't have a hand in the dealings of this 'operation' I have to admit I feel guilty by association. I am a shinigami, and we are supposed to be held to high standards of morallity as we govern the afterlife in a manner of speaking. He said, pulling his foot back and doing a back flip into his dancing stance again to make some space, regardless of whether or not his attack had made contact. As for other tourist locations, I highly suggest the Fourth Division Gardens. We try and keep it as lush and peaceful as possible for the patients to wander. Oh, and there is a wonderful food district, lots of variety and generally very good.
{Tech Used}Name: Escorpiao (Scorpion Kick) Tier IV Type: Offensive Range: Close Description: The user brings their body down to the ground, pivoting on their leading leg while using the momentum to bring their back leg up to kick an opponent standing in front of them. This attack is very hard to see coming and is often mistaken for a low dodge before the kick comes up to strike with the sole or heel of the back foot.
"Well, I did agree to it, even if I wasn't informed of all the risks. I don't think I would've made another choice anyway, though I'm still not happy with Kurotsuchi-taicho about glossing over the mortality rate." Daichi chose the wrong moment to be talking, but he hadn't expected Gaen to counterattack instead of dodge; if anything, he'd expected a dodge and then an attack. His jaw was slammed shut by an impressive kick and his landing was completely upset by that attack. The substitute went tail over teakettle before catching the ground with a hand and turning the aborted landing into something resembling a cartwheel so that he could land on his feet.
He would keep the distance between himself and Gaen temporarily, making a comment on something about the fight that confused him slightly. "Can you not use Shunpo? Your Hakuda skills are pretty good, but if you mixed it with Hoho it could probably go to a whole other level. I'm trying not to rely on it, because I've been told that I use it too much and if someone's faster than me it'll completely shut me down, so maybe it's not flawless advice, but it might bear thinking about."
True to his word, he did not utilize flash step to close the distance, faking a punch with his left hand before ducking down to try and match Gaen's tempo and deliver a finger flick to the head, enhanced with his spiritual power; a technique called Oni Headpoke, which was a really dumb name to be completely honest, but it was useful to be able to pull off a move that a lot of people underestimated like that, especially when it could give you a lot of space to work with.
While a touch surprised that anybody would agree to such an operation, if his new friend hadn't been aware of the risks or the Twelfth division Captain's reputation, he could see the appeal for a mortal to be granted extra-dimensional powers. Still, it was just a fine hair above abduction off the street in terms of morality. It was disheartening to think that there was literally nothing the tiny medic could do about what was clearly an ethically void person in the very highest of heights among the shinigami ranks.
Moral ambiguity aside, Gaen was glad to see that his Escorpiao kick had made purchase and simultaneously a little sorry it had. The kick was largely meant to be a means of surprising your opponent with a strong blow from an unexpected source, but even so Gaen wasn't really in this fight to actually hurt anybody.
Just so you know, I'd be happy to stop anytime and fix up any bruises or whatnot you get. Gaen said very sincerely, not really thinking that it could actually come across as a bit of a taunt. When Daichi mentioned the use of shunpo, Gaen was actually a little surprised at the question. To be completely honest, I, uh, I don't put much thought into fighting. He said as Daichi started coming in to close the distance. Gaen thought briefly about using shunpo to once again widen the gap as a sort of demonstration that he was actually half decent at the technique, but decided against it. I don't use it in spars because usually I'm just trying to work on my technique, not actually win. I don't mind if you wipe the floor with me at this point because I've had a chance to practice my forms quite a bit. He said, getting ready to sidestep the left jab he saw coming in. Now, a more experienced fighter may realize a feint when they see one, but Gaen was anything but. He was caught completely unaware when Daichi flicked him in the forehead with surprising effect. Gaen was sent off his feet and careening off, flying backward out of the sparing ring and crashing through a test dummy before coming to a stop as he hit a tree a good twenty meters away from where the original hit had been made. He slumped to the ground, more confused than anything, though he had to admit there was probably going to be a bruise on his head and his back was pretty sore. Gaen got back to his feet and stretched out his back, hearing a few pops and snaps. He started walking back to the sparring ring, focusing his rietsu as he did so.
Pain, I revoke thee. Ryodo number 40, torikesu. He said as his hand glowed a luminous white before he poked himself in the back, letting the rietsu suffuse into his spine and numb the aches brought forth from slamming through some dummies and tree. Ya, I should probably keep using shunpo in a fight on my list of things to practice. He said with a chuckle as he got back into his swinging dance like stance, thankfully pain free. Have you ever thought about picking up a healing kido? It's very handy in a fight I find. He said as he ran forward, planting his hand and coming up into a full handstand before bringing his weight down in a forceful kick.
Description: With Capoeira, the hands are not used much at all outside of negating movement by pressing with it, but Girar uses them to their fullest. By putting momentum into the body and flipping up onto their hands, they can instantaneously swing up into a handstand and strike downwards with the momentum of moving through in a diagonal movement, their heel acting as the catalyst for the technique to land. Girar is incredibly powerful, but not in it's practicality, rather, it's unique stance and way that it goes makes it so it's completely unpredictable with ginga, making it so it catches those who are off-guard with a strong strike to the head. The strike is potent enough to cut instead of bruise or break.
