Audun Dyrendal
Knowledge must not be slave to morality
White Noise || Male || Homosexual || non-rogue || 12th Division 20s || 22 || 205
APPEARANCE
Audun’s body type matches the kind of guy you’d expect to be working in a lab all day. He’s pale and fairly tall, standing at six foot four inches but he doesn’t put on nearly the same amount of muscle that many of the more combat focused divisions expect of their members. Audun isn’t weak, he looks after his own health and exercises. Its just that despite that the most he ends up slightly more of a toned scarecrow than a purely lanky one. His hair is blond with the faintest hints of red and is generally kept fairly short. When he neglects to take care of it it’ll occasionally get in his eyes and once he finds himself brushing it back out of the way multiple times while reading a single report he often realizes it’s time to take care of it. His most distinguishing feature is probably his bright almost lime green eyes and the number of piercings in his eyebrows, nose, ears and lips, as well as a few other less obvious places. He has a fairly sharp nose and chin, both courtesy of his mother’s side of the family, his hair and height were his father’s contribution. When outside of work, which is rarely for the dedicated researcher, he wears rather extravagant punk and j-rock themed clothing that has plenty of pockets to stick things in and straps to hand tools off of. He is often sporting bandages, particularly on his hands, as a result of some of the projects he works on in the 12th Division. Though largely a tech and information junkie he does like to dabble in biological experimentation as well at times and the chemicals that the 12th Division works with could be described as volatile only if you were prone to gentle understatement.
PERSONALITY
Audun is a technology addict plain and simple, dying young was the best thing that ever happened to him in his eyes because it saved him years of waiting to get into the 12th Division. He is incredibly clever and curious to the point of recklessness at times. As a researcher for the 12th Division it is his job to stay abreast of the current situation all around Soul Society and the human world as well, so that he can ensure that the 12th Division is working on projects to help it perform its noble duty. Not that Audun really cares too much about the noble duty bit. Even if he hadn’t been a bit amoral beforehand, and he had been, the Captain of the 12th Division would have beaten that morality out of him pretty quickly. Knowledge is not based in moral dilemma, it simply exists. If you waste your time trying to assign moral significance to every discovery you make then you hinder your own process and delay the uncovering of new innovations. Let someone else determine the why behind his inventions, Audun is happy to focus on the how.
Contrasting with the idea of the shy, withdrawn lab rat, Audun is actually relatively sociable. People are interesting to study, not just anatomically and physiologically but on a cultural and emotional level as well. So often humans do things that openly defy logic and that alone makes them fascinating. So Audun is happy to talk with people, ask questions and probe to understand people and their varied motivations. He is also fairly easy going when it comes to talking about himself, although he is prone to lying with a smile when he feels it is beneficial to. Lying is simple though and its something of a hobby for Audun to try and “expertly tell the truth”, that is not say anything which is explicitly untrue while still in essence not revealing the whole truth. This combined with a lack of a social filter when it comes to personal questions or self-exposition occasionally makes other less interested about talking to Audun as he is to talk with them. Talking at length about topics most people would rather not discuss or perhaps are simply unable to understand is what got him the nickname "White Noise", as at that point he might as well be making it.
Audun is focused, to the point that when working on something that has his interests he often lets other tasks and obligations fall to the wayside. If he promises to do something, because of his disdain for outright lies, he will make sure he gets around to doing it. But if an interesting problem should arise he’ll often spend more time on the tangent than the original issue. Still he is dependable when needed and will complete a job to the best of his abilities, he doesn’t like leaving things half finished. That is one of the reasons he has garnered some small amount of respect in his Division over the years.
HISTORY
Audun doesn't talk much about his past life as a human. From what he has mentioned it seems as though his father was a merchant, one of the ones responsible for bringing western books into Japan near the end of the Edo period. Although he has never made claims that his life was especially hard Audun has been known to joke that dying young was one of the best things to happen to him. As far as anyone can tell this is generally considered more of a comment on expediting his arrival in Soul Society than escaping anything from his mortal lifetime.
Regardless of what Audun says about his fortunes regarding his arrival in Soul Society, his early life within the Rukongai was not exactly easy. The Edo period a time of significant cultural growth and Audun's father was not from Japan himself, so people from different backgrounds and customs were not especially strange to Audun. That said, the Rukongai was like nothing else he had ever experienced. Various souls from all over were thrown together and expected to cohabitate and survive in less than ideal conditions outside of the Seireitei. The differing cultures and values of the residents of the Rukongai often stirred up trouble, something that Audun learned to spot early on. He made an effort to go out of his way to understand the people around him, who could help a stranger versus who would rip them off, what type of person would shrug off an insult and who would seek to repay a slight with violence.
Audun was relatively lucky in that he arrived to the 45th Western District of the Rukongai, an area that while not nearly as peaceful as the innermost districts, it was far from the lawless sprawl of the outermost. During his time in the 45th he was apprenticed to an inventor name Yuri who worked to improve the quality of life of those in the district. He helped construct irrigation equipment and various tools to make the lives of the citizens easier. It was hard work but he enjoyed learning from older man Yuri. It was considered a great tragedy when a gang from the outer districts passed through one day and burned the irrigation equipment to the ground, along with a building that had been storing the already harvested crops. Audun had used some salvaged parts from the fire to build some crude explosives which he then delivered to the houses of some of the gang members. When Yuri found out what he had done he was angry, asking why Audun would use what he'd learned to hurt people. This confused Audun at the time and he explained in a matter-of-fact tone that he was just helping the people of their district, same as he always had. To him eliminating a threat to their food supply was ultimately the same as helping to grow that food supply, the fact that lives were lost in one case was of little consequence. Results were what mattered. Yuri felt otherwise, which was why he reported Audun to the next patrol of Shinigami to pass through the district.
Normally the creation of a weapon like Audun had done would have led to his execution. Central 46 considered the creation of such weapons within Soul Society to be treasonous. But because their jurisdiction mainly fell upon the Seireitei itself, not the outer districts of the Rukongai, there was some question as to what to do about him. The question was put aside when a seated officer of the 12th Division happened to take an interest in Audun's case. He had heard about the weapons Audun had made and was curious enough to petition to speak with him before a verdict was passed. He was granted permission to and questioned Audun about the simple materials he had turned into explosive weaponry. The officer apparently saw some potential in Audun's ingenuity and submitted another petition that Audun be turned over to the 12th Division as a detained research assistant with a probationary period of ten years. Audun did not particularly want to be executed and he was curious about the group that the officer worked for so he was more than happy to agree. Eventually his case was ruled on, the judges were in favor of turning him over to the 12th Division. So for ten years Audun served as an assistant in the 12th Division and started to learn a bit about what separated a Rukongai soul from that of a Shinigami. At the end of those ten years, the officer who had first approached him said that the Captain of the 12th Division was willing to accept him into their ranks if he would be willing to go through the Shinigami Academy first. Audun had enjoyed his work with the 12th Division, they worked on projects that were far more interesting than irrigation and no one looked at him strangely for what Yuri had seen as his moral failings. After attending the Shinigami Academy, Audun eagerly joined the 12th Division and has continued to work avidly for them for several decades now.

KIDOU THE DEMON ARTS
HADO
Name: Hadō #4 Byakurai (Pale Lightning) Class: Kido Tier: II Type: Offensive Range: Medium (30m) Incantation: Broiling black, fervent heat, be rejected! Description: The user gathers high-density reiryoku, which they discharge from both hand. Alternatively, they point at their target with their index finger and generate a concentrated bolt of lighting towards them. It's speed is x.1.5 faster than a Bala, unique to it.
BAKUDO
Name: Bakudo #10 Kōmori Yoriyomi (Bat Out of Hell) Class: Kido Type: Transportation Tier: II Range: Indefinite Incantation: Guardian of the sky, I seek sanctuary! Description: A white hole appears above the caster, who jumps through it. The circle shoots across the sky at amazing speed, of which even Shunpo would have a hard time of keeping up with, transporting them to another location, but can go no further than a 10 mile radius. Cannot be used in combat.
Name: Bakudo #14 Hibiku (Resound) Class: Kido Type: Binding Tier: II Range: 5 Radial Meters Incantation: Three chimes, rattling bones, the savage Raijin lets loose his fearsome roar! Description: Releases a pulse of electricity in the shape of a dome that extends to a five meter diameter, pushing back and electrocuting all who are struck. The execution speed of this Bakudō is among the fastest of all Kidō.
Name: Bakudo #26 Kyokko (Curving Light) Class: Kido Type: Supplementary Tier: III Range: Self Incantation: n/a Description: Hides the target from sight by bending light. This Kidō can completely mask the presence and reiatsu of the target from detection but if any other combat technique is activated, this Kidou is overwhelmed and broken.
Eishōhaki (詠唱破棄, "Incantation Abandonment"): is the skill in which a Kidō practitioner skips using a spoken incantation completely, but it drastically weakens the spell. This is applied as a 1-2 tier drop in the spells power depending on ones Kidou mastery, 2 for Beginner up to Advanced, and 1 for Mastered and above. However this also lowers the spells cooldown to match the lowered tier, to a minimum of Tier I.e.g A Tier IV Kidou be cast with Eishohaki as a tier II, its cooldown will also be the same at 0 posts.
BATTLE SKILLS
Name: Soul Stamping Class: Reiryoku Tier: I Type: Passive Range: Long Description: When creating something, expert inventors and craftsmen put their heart and soul into an item. For Audun this isn't just metaphorical but literal as well. When he creates an item or uses an ability that forms something out of his spiritual energy, a piece of him is imprinted on that creation. He has taken to calling this Soul Stamping. When something he has made is Soul Stamped all he has to do is focus intently on the item in question and he can tell exactly where it is within 200m of himself, he can also tell if it is currently being used [if its something that requires activation]. If it is further away than 200m he only gets a vague sense of the direction he would have to go to find the item. Finally if it is in a separate dimension, for instance the item is on Earth while he is in Soul Society, he cannot sense it at all. This same sense is applied to any of his abilities where he uses his own spiritual power to create or make something and in certain cases he hopes to expand upon this core ability with more experimentation. Soul Stamping is something that is a part of the creation process, so he cannot put a Soul Stamp on something he himself didn't create. This means he could not just pick up an item and imprint on it, or touch someone's weapon and be able to track them via the Soul Stamp but it does lend itself to creative uses. Audun really and truly puts himself into each and every one of his projects.
Name: Shunpo (Flash Steps) Class: Stepping Type: Stepping Range: N/A Tier: I Description: A movement technique that allows the user to move extremely quickly over short distances. The focal point that determines the basis of this technique is speed. Therefore what determines the level of skill in a user for Shunpo is best characterized by how fast one can get from A to B in the least amount of steps.
ITEMS
REIATSU FEATURES
Audun's reiatsu aura is a lively bright green color and as his aura gets further away from him it almost appears to grow pixelated, as individual fragments break off and disappear into his surroundings. When agitated or engaged in battle his aura will appear to almost flicker, similar to a burst of static across a screen and this will continue until he calms himself or feels in control of his surroundings once again.
ZANPAKUTOU
Shiro Usagi [White Rabbit]
Dimensional
"Kakureru!" [Hide/Disappear]
SEALED FORM
The sealed form is nothing special, it is in fact smaller than the normal katana sized zanpakutou. Audun's sealed weapon is more of a tanto or wakizashi at most. The blade itself is kept clean and in pristine condition, which is generally easy since Audun rarely sees need to draw it out. The only marking on the blade is a stylized rabbit head in place of any other identifying maker's mark. The case is white and clinically clean in its appearance, with the sageo cord wrapping decorated with several leaping rabbits as the only decoration or ornamentation.
SPIRIT APPEARANCE
The spirit of Shiro Usagi, is, as the name would imply, a White Rabbit though it stands at around three feet tall. That creates the impression of it being a young child and while it seems to have boundless, childlike energy it does have many moments of intelligent insight that belie its childish impression.
SPIRIT PERSONALITY
Shiro Usagi is a clever, mischievous creature. It seems to enjoy having fun although its idea of fun is somewhat out of sync with the norm. Much like Audun it tends to shy away from black and white qualities inherent in good and evil. This is probably part of the reason that Audun is able to have a reasonably good relationship with his zanpkautou's spirit.
INNER WORLD
Whenever Audun enters the spiritual realm of his zanpakutou's inner world he finds himself on the edge of a pond. Most of his conversations take place around this area, although Shiro Usagi allows him to wander around some. When he goes to the edge of his little garden he can look down on a rather strange looking valley. Whenever he asks why he cannot travel deeper into the valley Shiro Usagi tends to become evasive, at most saying, "You are not ready to open the Gates." As far as Audun can tell the Gates are the strange arches in the far end of the valley.
SHIKAI
SHIKAI APPEARANCE
Audun is lucky in that his zanpakutou's released form matches his personality and skills well, not everyone can claim that kind of bond. Rather than growing or becoming more flashy, Audun's wakizashi actually shrinks even further in size to that of a rather high-tech looking laser scalpel. Although the edge is deadly sharp, the range is absolutely abysmal and it has no real use in an actual sword fight. It is a tool of careful, considered strikes and slashes, not all out brawling. But again, that suits Audun just fine as he would prefer to avoid a fair sword fight if at all possible. In his mind if you're getting into a fair fight you already did something wrong.
Name: Okohhoppingu [Hopping Mad] Class: Shikai Tier: I Type: Passive Boost Range: Self Description: Upon releasing his Shikai Audun is granted some of the agility and acrobatic prowess of his zanpakutou, this allows him to move twice as fast as he would normally be able to outside of his Shikai activation and gives him a massive increase to his jump height as well as a boost to his balance and coordination when attempting more acrobatic stunts. This increase in mobility helps make up for his lack of raw power and lasts for the duration of his Shikai's release state.
Name: Usagi no Suana [Rabbit Hole] Class: Shikai Tier: III Type: Supplementary Range: Long Description: Arguably the core ability of Shiro Usagi in its released state. By slashing a hole in the air Audun can create a rip in space he calls a [Rabbit Hole] that remains remains inactive until he completes the second portion of the ability. When he creates another [Rabbit Hole] he can link them and cause people or objects who come into contact with them to pass through between the two points if he wills them to pass through. He can also disallow people or objects from passing through the [Rabbit Hole] if he chooses to. Shiro Usagi can create two [Rabbit Holes] by default with an additional one for every Rank he is above LL, up to a max of five additional should he reach HL-A. Any of these [Rabbit Holes] can lead to any other and he can shift them around at will. There are several limitations to these [Rabbit Holes] that are as follows. When two are linked and open they can only remain open for up to five posts and once a [Rabbit Hole] closes he cannot open another unless he has additional unused [Rabbit Holes] due to his rank or until its cool-down has past, which is twice the number of posts it was opened. Finally, while travel between two [Rabbit Holes] within 50 feet of one another is instant, if there is between 51 and 100 feet between them it requires a moment of intense concentration, preventing Audun from attacking while he focuses on opening the connection. The furthest that two [Rabbit Holes] can be opened from one another is 200 meters and creating the link between them requires a full post of focus from Audun to the exclusion of all else going on around him, making it extremely dangerous to do in combat without assistance.
Name: Usaginoana o Tōrinuke [Down the Rabbit Hole] Class: Shikai Tier: IV Type: Binding Range: Melee Description: The released state of Shiro Usagi is even smaller than its sealed wakizashi form, for someone who lacks brute strength it is even more important that Audun be precise with his attacks. That is what this dangerous binding ability represents, the power of precision and the risk that it carries with it. If he can draw his scalpel like zanpakutou across a target's body part, everything that is outward from the target's center disappears "Down the Rabbit Hole" for up to six posts. The body parts that are separated are not harmed in any way and appear undamaged at the end of the ability's use, they are merely bound in an extra-dimensional space for a period of time. The cool-down on this ability is twice the number of posts that the body-part was sealed away, often making it an all or nothing gambit. He can opt to return the use of their body part before six posts are up in order to suffer a less sever cool-down if he feels his initial binding wasn't beneficial. This ability can be blocked by tier appropriate defenses, though if the binding doesn't activate, neither does the cool-down, allowing him to take another swipe at his opponent after only a single post cool-down. [Post 1 - Swipe and blocked. Post 2 - Cool-down. Post 3 - Swipe again.] This ability works on body parts, not on items, so should he bind the arm holding a weapon, the weapon wont disappear with the arm. It would instead fall to the ground, potentially allowing the opponent to pick it up and keep fighting with it. Should he manage to draw a slash across someone's throat and their head is sealed they will not pass out or die, instead they will be denied sight, sound and smell but will still be in control of the rest of their body. Whether they have the ability to put up any kind of reasonable defense or offense while severed from their senses is another matter entirely. It should be noted it is affected by the advantage system like any other binding ability.
