Shiro had asked if Mitsuoki was sure that he wanted to keep going, to which the soul reaper said "Yes." She had then asked if he was sure it was okay to use full power, noting how she hurt him badly before. "An attack from the front is easy for me to adapt to, especially when I am fully expecting it. I am closer than before to mastering this technique and have no fear of getting hurt. Invention without Experimentation will only lead to failure at a critical moment. Best to get the hard part done off of the battlefield." he said while looking on Shiro with his usual stare.
Shiro had taken a spot at the middle of the crater again and Mitsuoki had taken his spot in front of the three kyomon and meteor. He watched as she charged the energy and she seemed to be unsure of herself, still worried about hurting him. She had a gentle nature when compared to the other spiritually aware beings that Mitsuoki had come across, which did worry him to a degree. With her being so timid about hurting him, Mitsuoki wondered if Shiro would be able to kill something at all.
When Shiro had the energy readied, Mitsuoki shouted "Fire!" and paid attention as the attack came in. He was able to weaken her attack to a considerable degree, taking only as much damage as the watered down versions dished out. There was a mountain of crystal shards laying on the ground in a line, leading from Shiro to Mitsuoki, that quickly turned to dust and vanished into the air. Mitsuoki was satisfied that he had been able to do that much. He also wasn't forced to one of his knees from this one, letting him know that his body was getting more resilient to her attacks. "Again!" Mitsuoki shouted while preparing to block once more. The result of this one would be more successful, but not to the extent that he needed it to be. He would shout "Again" once more and this time, after Shiro had fired, Mitsuoki would get it right. Shiro would see her attack freeze in the air and hear a cracking sound before the entire blast exploded into crystal like shards that turned to dust before they even hit the ground. "Okay, now I would like you to come forward please. Roughly at the halfway mark. I can use the technique; but, I need to improve my reaction time with it. Do not reduce power, please." Mitsuoki would say loudly across the crater's expanse.

Shiro watched the attack land and become crystallized. Mostly. Much of what she'd fired at Mitsuoki had been reduced to crystals which quickly faded into the atmosphere and disappeared. She drew a sigh of relief, noticing the attack at full power hadn't hurt the Shinigami anymore than her previous watered down versions. So when Mitsuoki shouted at her to attack again, Shiro was less inclined to worry, firing off the attack subsequently each time without issue. He could dissipate her attack because of his defensive ability. His reaction was good but judging this based solely on the simple fact Mitsuoki prepared himself beforehand was a little misleading. A true application of such an ability wouldn't really hold any water unless one could prepare and defend with split second reactions. Shiro figured this to be why all of her training with Theocelese had been hands on experiences, to guide her in effective, efficient application of her skills and combat expertise.
Shiro approached when Mitsuoki asked her to come forward, stopping her at about half the distance. He wanted her to fire off more attacks but from a shorter distance? It would give him only about half the time to prepare against her attack each time... Perhaps this was good training but she still worried. Without his defensive technique this energy she fired off could do significant amounts of damage. It was something she feared could even kill a normal human if she weren't extremely careful with it... Shiro wanted to suggest to Mitsuoki that she use a weaker ability but his determination to see this through with the current parameters appeared to be set. He probably wouldn't allow her to use anything weaker at this point anyway given how nearly completely he could diffuse the current ability.
Once. Shiro would fire off one attack at this distance, gauge how well he reacted to it. She would obviously wait until he told her to fire again but if she saw her attack doing anything significant to Mitsuoki's health she would immediately and firmly object. It would take some solid convincing from Mitsuoki for Shiro to continue if this first half-distanced attack resulted in any significant damage to him.
Mitsuoki had prepared himself both physically and mentally for the incoming attack. He didn't channel any of his energy since he knew that he wouldn't be so lucky as to fully expect an attack like this in actual combat. His reishi was evenly distributed throughout his body, meaning that when Shiro fired, he would have to rapidly move enough of his energy into his defending limb to counter her attack. No one said it would be easy, but Mitsuoki knew that failing would have dire consequences. "Fire!" he shouted and waited till he could feel Shiro's attack being released before he moved the energy. He was able to fire reiryoku techniques fairly quickly, just not in the same way that this one was being done. Still, he was able to move a mass of it to his hand and stop the incoming attack just as well as the last one, if not better. Mitsuoki looked through the still dissipating crystal shards at Shiro with an expression that contained a little bit of surprise at his success. He then returned to a normal position and began walking towards Shiro.
"It would seem that I am able to use my technique quite well, now. I owe you a debt of gratitude, Shiro. While I am able to use the technique for slow firing attacks, I am at a disadvantage against faster firing ones." Mitsuoki had paused a few seconds while he thought of something. "Shiro, that attack that you used. The one that caused the wound on my arm... After analyzing it, I can surmise that you are able to control the direction that it fires from. I wish to stand in the middle of the attack zone with a ten meter gap between myself and the farthest limit. I would then have you use that attack to fire from a random direction, so that I may learn to repeatedly use my technique. In terms of frequency, the moment you notice me successfully stop one attack, I would like you to fire the next. If I fail to stop it, then I would like to pause the training so I may confirm that I am capable of continuing. Furthermore..." Mitsuoki had taken one of the ripped parts of his kimono and tore it off before wrapping it around his eyes "I will do this blindfolded."
If Shiro protested the idea, Mitsuoki would say "Do not fear for my ability to see the attack coming. The first time, I knew where it was coming from the moment you fired it. This was not a coincidence or a sudden sharpening of my instincts. I am always aware of my surroundings, even when I am unable to see, smell, hear, or feel it. As I said, if I am hit, we shall stop to prevent any critical damage."

"I'm glad I could help." Shiro bowed to Mitsuoki's indicated gratitude. Though She still didn't think sending energy attacks at him that could cause grave bodily harm was much to really be thanking her for... She nodded her understanding. Even now he was analyzing his ability? True responding in time would be a key to making this new technique of his work and work well, but such things would come with more experience.
"What...!?" Shiro couldn't imagine the shock in her expression but it certainly was there. Did this mean that by modifying her method and using a different technique she'd unintentionally opened up Mitsuoki's mind to other training options!? She wanted to protest the notion of using the very technique that'd injured him so soon after he'd managed to dissipate the one she'd been using all along. Wasn't that enough? "W-why are you blindfolding yourself!? Won't that cause problems?"
Mitsuoki's explanation did little to ease Shiro's nerves. Even if they did pause in the event he got hurt again, she wasn't sure her heart could take another incident like that. It was one thing to hurt someone who intentionally sought to harm her or someone she cared about, but Mitsuoki didn't fall into that category. There was no imminent threat or real reason to even be throwing attacks at him other than for training purposes. "If seeing isn't the problem then why did you blindfold yourself? Wouldn't it be better to just use all your senses like normal for this?" Concern played over Shiro's face. She'd still be concerned even if he hadn't put a blindfold over his eyes but this would only serve to heighten her worrying about his well-being...
Shiro sighed. "I really hope you're ready for this..." Mitsuoki was surprisingly stubborn whenever he had a goal or objective to seek out. Shiro retreated, putting forty meters distance between Mitsuoki and herself. Even if he wanted the ten meter distance, the field itself had a set size and wasn't really something she could modify in the moment. When he was ready, Shiro extended the barrier, engulfing Mitsuoki and herself once again within it. The field, centered around herself, extended to Mitsuoki and ten meters beyond. He would be free to alter the distance to his own design if he saw fit, but for now the closest portion of the barrier would be at his desired distance. Shiro would only find slight relief at using this technique. It was weaker than her previous ability but its deadliness lay in it's significantly faster speed... Shiro prepared the first attack, charging it slowly to be completely certain the Shinigami would be ready for it before firing it off at the ten meter distance. It would arc out from the wall, straight towards him. She wouldn't fire again until she knew for sure that Mitsuoki's physical condition could continue.
After all this training that threatened to rattle and break her emotions she would be sure to have Mitsuok treat her to some delicious sweets the next time they met in the human world...
Mitsuoki had readied himself for the incoming attack, showering the area in his spiritual pressure that reflected a state of apathy. Shiro had been taking it slowly, forming the attack at an incredibly reduced speed from the first one she had shot. As soon as the attack had been fired, Mitsuoki hit it with the back of his hand, sending a wave of energy through it that made the attack turn into crystals that quickly faded away. "Shiro, when training with Theoclese, does his attacks reflect fear of hurting you, or does he attack as though he is confident in your ability to adapt?" he asked while looking directly at her, through the blindfolds. "Again!" he exclaimed and got ready to block the next attack.
Shiro would notice that while attacking, Mitsuoki was stopping them without fail. He was able to tell where the next burst of energy was coming from before she fired it, and was able to move his body to react accordingly, with each bolt of energy being turned into crystal. After five minutes of that, Mitsuoki would say "That's enough." to let her know it was time to stop. He would remain vigilant until the barrier came down, just in case Shiro needed a couple of seconds to process the command. Once it was down, he would say "Thank you, Shiro. I believe I have come up with a name for this technique... Petrify."
"..." Shiro couldn't help but feel a little irritated by Mitsuoki's words. She'd done that from the start but it'd only resulted in her seriously injuring the Shinigami. It was the whole reason behind her holding back but now he wanted her to stop holding back? No... true she didn't really need to hold back if he'd mastered this ability of his. Fine, if that's how he wanted this part of the training to go then she'd hold confidence in him. Though Shiro'd still only be firing off one attack at a time, the intervals in which she projected these attacks would fall in tandem with Mitsuoki's ability to counter and dissipate them, growing shorter and shorter the longer he went. Some attacks she sent directly from the wall itself, closest to Mitsuoki. Others she timed just enough for him to block and then notice the other angle of attack, giving him barely enough time to counter.
Letting out a sigh of relief, Shiro Spark Stepped over to Mitsuoki once he announced the end of this training tidbit. "Petrify? Why not crystallize or shatter?" She asked curiously. Given what happened each time he used the ability it made more sense to naturally call it by one of her suggestions. But it didn't seem to matter much what he chose to call it since he didn't need any verbal references with which to use the ability itself. "I guess Petrify is fine. It just reminds me of the mythical Medusa beasts that would petrify any living thing that looked into their eyes, turning them into stone. "
"So was that the training then?" Shiro asked, glancing to the sky. She could tell they'd been there at least a few hours, though Hueco Mundo's sky was a bad indicator since it didn't seem to ever change... Switching to her phone, Shiro noted the time. Thankfully it had the ability to keep time internally, making corrections only when it needed to whenever it connected with proper cell service areas.
Shiro had asked if the training was complete, to which he said "Yes, so I supposed I should return you to Las Noches, now..." in a fairly calm tone. Mitsuoki had held up his hand and rested it on Shiro, saying "Teleport Gatestone, Las-" he paused and quickly grabbed Shiro's shoulders to spin her around. Mitsuoki rested his hands on Shiro's eyes while pulling her back, resting the back of her head against his torso. He quickly changed the destination by saying "-District Sixty Eight!" and the two of them would erupt into light blue particles before reforming near Mitsuoki's old home.
Mitsuoki would gently lift his hands from Shiro's eyes. If Shiro had looked around, she would see herself standing at a type of monument. In the middle would be a large, stone pillar with the name "Haruka Hikken" written in large letters, perfectly centered, on all of its four sides. Below that was a circular stone slab that extended out four meters in all directions. Like number on a clock, twelve other stone pillars rose up with twelve different names on them. The pillar with Haruka's name was eight feet tall, and two and a half feet at the base before tapering off to a one foot width at the top. The twelve pillars on the edge of the circular floor were only three feet tall, with similar proportions.
Looking beyond the monument that was sitting atop a hill, in the short distance, Shiro would see a village that looked somewhat run down, but not exactly in ruins. It was seated next to a river with shimmering water that reflected the midday sun's light. Mitsuoki would say "This is one of the villages in the Rukongai, District Sixty Eight... in the Soul Society. It is where I lived before I became a Soul Reaper." in a gentle tone. Mitsuoki would keep Shiro pressed against his body while pointed towards a large, floating circle in the distance with a very nice, pure white city under it. "That ring in the sky is the Sekki Sekki wall. Whenever an intruder tries to enter, it drops from the sky. Under it is where the soul reapers live, the Seireitei." Mitsuoki would then release Shiro and take a couple of steps back. If she looked around, she would notice vast forests in the distance, mountains, other hills, plains, and even the smoke coming from other villages is the very far off reaches. It was definitely a different place from Hueco Mundo. "I cannot let you go too far; but, if you wish, we may visit my village? Consider this my way of thanking you for helping me, today."
Shiro nodded in agreement. If her job was done here then it was only natural she be returned to the place he'd picked her up from, that would be proper dating practice at least. Shiro blushed. What was she thinking about right now? This could hardly be called a date, training out in the middle of the desolate sands with Mitsuoki... or could it? Mitsuoki's hand came to rest on her and she watched him. So he used a method making use of predesignated locations then? How did he achieve that? Some sort of device used as an anchor perhaps? But she hadn't seen any physical representation to suggest this kind of method upon her arrival...
"...!?" Startled, Shiro prepared to protest the sudden shift in her position but held her tongue at the words Mitsuoki spoke. Not to designate Las Noches as her destination but a place called Dristrict Sixty Eight instead? Shiro had but a moment to interpret his sudden actions and the words he uttered before everything around her changed. Though she couldn't immediately see with Mitsuoki covering her eyes, there was a clear and distinct difference in the atmosphere that felt far warmer and more welcoming than the desert environment of Hueco Mundo. A monument stood before her featuring names she didn't recognize, gazing around She soon noticed the town. "Is this...?" Shiro started but drifted off, still taking in the differences to what she'd expected to see. This clearly wasn't Las Noches, and it sure didn't appear to be any place she recognized from the Earth she recalled.
Mitsuoki answered Shiro's lingering question and she grasped the reality of her situation. He'd transported her to Soul Society...!? But why now of all times had he chosen to do so? After so much refusal she'd pretty much given up on him ever really helping her with this feat. Shiro Followed Mitsuoki's finger as he pointed out and explained a bit about the things she was looking at. So this was Soul Society? It seemed oddly normal, in an old fashion samurai kind of sense. The houses in this district seemed a bit rundown but in a more lived in sense rather than simply being abandoned and unused.
"Thank you! I'd love to go and see the village!" Shiro exclaimed, possibly a little to excitedly, startling someone nearby who seemed to have been asleep on one side of the monument's base. "But that Sekki Sekki wall or whatever... Why exactly does it need to keep out intruders?" Shiro asked, motioning towards the floating ring Mitsuoki had pointed out to her. It seemed odd that this Soul Society would section off parts of itself with barriers without good reason. Sure back on Earth there were places typically off limits to the general populace but those were mostly places possessed of hazards or people's own privately protected interests. This appeared to be an entire city barred off from the districts... Were the regular people not allowed to go there or something?
While walking down the hill to the village, Shiro had asked about why the wall needed to keep people out. Mitsuoki had said "The Soul Society is divided into three sections. The first is where we are, the Rukongai. It is divided into eighty districts. The closer you get to eighty, the less civil things get. For example, when I arrived in the Soul Society, I was in district seventy. I was given two options, surrender my robes or be severely beaten and/or, possibly, killed. The closer you get to one, the nicer things get. The first four districts are purely nobles, and things degrade after that point."
Mitsuoki had paused for a couple seconds before continuing. "The second area is the Seireitei. That area is where you will find the Soul Reaper Academy, the homes of three of the four great noble clans, as well as the Thirteen Court Guard Squads and Kido Corps headquarters. It is reserved for Soul Reapers and the most elite nobles, essentially. The third area is the Soul King's Palace, which is literally a world of its own. The only ones allowed in are members of the Soul King's personal guard, known as Squad Zero, and those that the king deems worthy."
Upon entering the village, a young boy was running away from an angry merchant who was shouting for him to be stop running. Mitsuoki had stepped in the young boy's path, causing the child to hit his leg and rebound to a sitting position with a large, clay jar with a cloth cap, sitting in his arms. The merchant ran over with a wooden pole raised, preparing to hit the youth, but Mitsuoki had grabbed the man's wrist and, using his other hand, thrusted his palm into the old timer's sternum to force him back. The old man complained that the "brat" had stolen one of his water jugs, to which Mitsuoki said "You get those jugs by stealing them from passing traders, and fill them with boiled river water. The loss of one or two of those is of no consequence to you." in a harsh tone, which the old man had only grumbled. Mitsuoki reached in his sleeve and pulled out a copper coin that he threw in the old man's direction. "Send four more to where the others are, and do not attempt to swindle me." he added in an equally harsh tone.
The young boy looked up and shouted Mitsuoki's name, immediately cheering up. Mitsuoki looked down with a glare that made the boy cheer down and look at the floor. "Stealing is wrong and you know it. Just because you did not feel like boiling your own water does not justify taking from someone else. Now, go wait with the others and I shall visit shortly." Mitsuoki's tone had become much less harsh for the last bit and the young boy nodded and did as told.
Mitsuoki let out a sigh and glanced at Shiro. "It was a Soul Reaper who told me to leave district seventy and come here, where the theft is normally small and inconsequential items. No one threatens to kill you for the clothes on your back, but they may 'borrow' some of the items in your pockets. Well, when I am not around, at least. Come, this way." Mitsuoki would begin walking down the street, stopping at a stall where a man had a butcher's knife at his hip and several cloth bags that were tied off. Mitsuoki had put two silver coins and a copper one on the wooden surface and the man passed Mitsuoki a large cloth bag. "May I also get a small bag, please?" he asked, and the man said 'Sure thing.' in a fairly cheerful tone, immediately providing the requested item at no extra charge. Mitsuoki had held the bag out in front Shiro for her to take. "Here, this one's for you." he said calmly, giving her the small bag of hard candy. She would find them to be very sweet, but also have varying flavors. If she had asked what the large bag was for, he would say "The souls of children stay near the river. This is for them."
"I see... so this place really is similar to how Earth was in the past..." Shiro noted, absorbing Mitsuoki's explanation for why the areas were segregated so. "But why would Soul Society hold onto old traditions like that? Based on the history I know of for Earth, nothing good ever came out of separating people by their social classes..." While she did have a point, knowing the background for why Soul Society had a system like this in place would need research beyond simply knowing that the social segregation existed.
So basically nobles and people of military or higher ranking were the only ones permitted to live within this Seireitei? Wait? This place ran by way of a Monarchy!? Wasn't that a rather old-school form of governing? Shiro pondered this reality for a brief moment, wondering why a place which governed the balance of her world would be so... unbalanced... It made no sense really. She'd expected maybe an elected council. Some body of the organization governing the land of Soul Society and its people. If it really were a king making all the calls... "King...?" Shiro stared off towards the village. Even a king should care about places like this right?
Theft. To be expected given the general state the village was in, but if they were spirits then what exactly did they need food and water for? It wasn't like they had physical bodies to maintain so hunger and cleanliness shouldn't be an issue... Shiro looked to Mitsuoki. She'd seen him eat before, but it'd been while he occupied an actual physical body.
Shiro accepted the bag, opening it and peering in at the contents. Upon seeing what it was inside, she carefully pulled out a single hard candy. "Food? But I thought everyone here were spirits... Why would they need stuff like this?" Shiro asked, turning her quizzical expression around onto Mitsuoki. Shiro's audible reaction gained a curious look from the individual selling the rock candies but little more than that as he returned to whatever he currently occupied his time with. Trying the candy, Shiro was immersed in a sensation she couldn't explain any other way than that of joy. The candy's sweet flavors melted over the girl's tongue, piercing her taste-buds with vaguely familiar flavorings. "These are delicious!" Shiro squealed happily, digging into the bag and pulling out more candies to stuff into her mouth. Though they were lightly colored and seemed outwardly bland, each candy appeared to hold different flavors. Shiro tried to pick out what the flavors were but many of them were unfamiliar to her, though she recognized a few that seemed similar to ones she already knew.
The larger bag, Mitsuoki carried. "What is that bag for?" Shiro inquired. To which Mitsuoki simply responded that it would be given to the kids at the river. "I see, well that's nice of you." Shiro smiled. Though the gesture was more than likely wasted in terms of offering nourishment, certainly Mitsuoki's generosity served some other purpose? She would have to wait and find out once they got to the river.
Responding to Shiro's inquiry about why there was a candy seller at all, or rather, why the souls needed this sort of thing in the first place, Mitsuoki had said "Just because they do not require nutrition to stay alive, does not mean that they would not want it. Food is a precious commodity, even in this world. It tastes good and can even improve your mood. I personally learned to cook simply because I enjoy eating." It was a little more information than he intended to give, but it wasn't a dire secret that he was guarding with his life, so he didn't point out that he shouldn't have told Shiro about his hobby.
A short ways away, they had come to a shack of sorts with a torn up cloth covering the entry way. Mitsuoki had pulled back the cloth and inside was seven children, all looking in his direction. The room had five small, wooden boxes that were filled with hay and had thick blankets thrown over them to keep the hay from sticking the kids in their sleep. Two sets of siblings were easily recognizable among the children by their similar features and matching hair and eyes. The young boy from earlier said "See! I told you he was coming!" with a happy tone. Mitsuoki had scanned the room and his eyes settled on a very young girl with long, scarlet hair and light blue eyes who was trying to hide behind the other kids. "I see there is a new member, present." Mitsuoki said in his usual cold tone, making the girl clam up and begin backing away, towards one of the beds in the back. Mitsuoki entered the room and walked towards her, the girl backing away until she hit the bed, at which point she began holding her own hands while shutting her eyes as tight as possible.
Mitsuoki kneeled down, reaching into the bag and holding one of the small candies for her. "You need not fear me." he said in a much softer tone. The girl opened her eyes and nervously reached for the candy. She put it in her mouth and softly, shyly, said "I- It's good..." in a very sweet sounding voice. Mitsuoki had lifted his hand and gently rested it on her head to begin rubbing it gently. "I had not known there would be a new face here, less I would have brought more. That is alright, you may have my share." he said with a light smile. Mitsuoki stood up and sat on the bed behind the girl, setting the candy bag next to him.
He then lifted the child and set her on his leg and said "Very well, who is first?" which caused the children to all line up with empty bags in need of filling. After the other children had their bags filled, Mitsuoki handed the new member, who couldn't have been older than four when she died, the rest of the candy, which was enough for just one more bag. "Thank you." she said with a guilty expression. Mitsuoki had reached around to hug her from behind, causing the girl's cheeks to turn a gentle shade of pink. "You are most welcome. What is your name?" he asked, and the girl said "N-Nina..." Mitsuoki nodded before releasing her partially, moving his hands to her armpits and lifting her up to set her on the ground. "I am Mitsuoki. I used to live here, so I return from time to time to visit." one of the kids then pointed to Shiro and shouted "Hey, Mitters brought his girlfriend!"

Shiro nodded. To eat because you enjoyed it was something she could agree with. There were times she even wanted to try foods, not because she were hungry, but because she wanted to try new and delicious foods. She looked up at Mitsuoki in surprise when he announced his interest in cooking. "I didn't know you knew how to cook!" Well she should have expected this sort of thing. Mitsuoki seemed to be pretty closed off when it came to personal information about himself... She'd have to get him to teach her sometime. Cooking had been one of the few things Shiro hadn't really learned how to do as she often trained with her father. Mother made all the meals and while she'd helped occasionally, she hadn't done any of the actual cooking.
No door. Though the building appeared to be structurally sound, it didn't have a door like most modern houses typically had. Even the warehouses and other uninhabited buildings Shiro knew about had doors to them... She kept a smile on her face though when she noticed the place contained several child pluses. Seeing the scene before her was beginning to make Shiro realize the differences between this world and her own. She'd seen poverty. It existed in her world, though the area she lived in could hardly be considered destitute. These kids, though they lived in the rather rundown building, didn't seem to be without their joys. It helped to lift Shiro's spirits a bit, seeing them happy to see Mitsuoki. All except for an apparent new girl, at first. It made Shiro wonder what relationship these districts held with the Seireitei for souls to be frightened like that. Or maybe it could be just the fact that the girl was still surprisingly young. Shiro caught herself feeling relieved at being able to live much longer than this unfortunate girl had.
She dismissed the dreary thought processes when Mitsuoki started handing out the hard candies. Watched the kids line up to receive their fair share of the food, before realizing she still had a bag of her own. Pulling out another couple of candies, Shiro popped them into her mouth. A mixture of two different flavors swam around and she enjoyed them just as much as the first ones. It must have been something if these kids couldn't have food while Mitsuoki remained otherwise occupied and away from them.
Shiro nearly choked on her next candy when one of the kids pointed her out and declared her to be Mitters' girlfriend. Her eyes watered as she coughed up the candy, back into her mouth, heavily relieved it hadn't decided to continue down the wrong path. "I-I am not...! Shiro protested, directing her words towards the accusing child. Though she argued, Shiro couldn't help but feel her face flushing red with embarrassment. If Mitsuoki had come out and said yes right then and there, She'd have likely died on the spot from sheer embarrassment. Times like this made Shiro happy to know that Mitsuoki was a bit cold on the outside when it came to his emotions...
"You're not?" the little boy asked, saying "But the last time Mittens brought a girl here, she was." Mitsuoki had immediately shot a glare at the little boy, which was thousands of times nicer than what the soul reaper would do to any adult aged soul who dared bring up his past. One of the girls in the room walked up and tugged at the boy's sleeve before saying "You're not supposed to talk about her..." in a slightly afraid tone. She had seen what Mitsuoki did to someone who brought Haruka up while Mitsuoki was around, and she didn't want to test the limits of Mitsuoki's kindness towards children. The boy looked at Mitsuoki and said "S-sorry, Mittens." while looking at the ground. Mitsuoki let out a frustrated sigh and said "Just do not repeat your actions, all is forgiven." The new member of the group was left confused about what had happened, and stayed quiet.
Mitsuoki had stood up and began leaving the room. The young girl, Nina, had walked behind him and grabbed him by the sleeve. He looked back and saw that she was looking up at him with a disheartened look. "I am going to show this human around the village. Do you wish to accompany us?" he asked, to which Nina nodded. Mitsuoki had extended the hand of the sleeve that Nina was grabbing and said "Very well, you may come." The girl had quickly tied the string on the candy back and tucked it under her robe's belt before taking his hand.
If Shiro had asked about the other girl he had brought here, Mitsuoki would say "The fact that I exist at all is owed to that woman. It was my greatest joy to bring her here." If Shiro had pointed out that she must have been someone extremely special, or important, to Mitsuoki to bring them, he would say "She was." in a very blunt tone. The operative word being 'was' since Haruka's dead, now. Mitsuoki would be leading Shiro to a stone bridge that went across the river that the village was next to.
Shiro was really starting to become curious about this other girl Mitsuoki knew. So much so it was starting to bother her for some reason... Her thoughts were momentarily put to rest upon seeing how the children reacted to Mitsuoki's stance on the matter, coupled with the girl's suggestion to the boy about silencing himself. Mitsuoki got an apology, while he himself seemed to consider the boy's position, accepting it easily like any emotionally attached adult might. It struck Shiro as a bit strange seeing him act with such kindness around these children. First the candies, then the girlfriend accusations, of which he himself hadn't really done any scolding... Very strange...
"This Human" ... Shiro's eyes fell to the girl, an action chosen with intent to avoid showing her face to Mitsuoki. "You can call me Shiro. It's nice to meet you." Shiro smiled at the girl, kneeling down to meet at eye level. Though Shiro wouldn't admit it, it felt distancing, and even a little hurtful to be called "This Human" around others who very much appeared to be human themselves...
"So this other girl you brought here with you. Was it because she trained with you too or... perhaps it was something else?" Shiro made to tease, though Mitsuoki's response instantly made her regret her statement. "S-sorry... I didn't realize..." Sour. Too sour... She'd unintentionally killed the mood. Actually... if she'd been just a little older, this situation would probably look a bit odd to the outsider. Mitsuoki, Shiro, and a little girl walking together. One might even mistake them for a family... Shiro blushed, shaking the thought from her head in an attempt to return her complexion back to normal.
The bridge came into view, Shiro looked to the girl, then to Mitsuoki. "So... is each village considered its own district or is there a different way of knowing how the separations work?" She couldn't be completely certain given that this was technically not the same world as her own... But from the way she understood it, districts were usually smaller parts of a larger town.
Shiro had apologized for asking about Haruka, to which Mitsuoki said "It is a small matter." though, he didn't say that Shiro was forgiven, like with the little girl. Things went quiet while they walked the rest of the way to the bridge, and, when they got there, Mitsuoki had lead her to the underside of the bridge where she would notice tally marks on the walls that, instead of being four straight lines with a diagonal, were eleven lines with a straight one across them. "The soul society is treated as a whole item, but is divided into each district outside of the Seireitei. Districts can either be an entire village, or they can be multiple villages. I was told to come to this district since it was nicer, but stayed in this village since there was a very easy source of food." Mitsuoki had turned and pointed to the water where some fish were moving around. "I stayed right here, under this bridge, most of the time. Even though I was a plus, I was always hungry for reasons I couldn't explain. Later on, I found out that I was leaking extreme amounts of spirit pressure. A friend taught me to control my reiatsu, which reduced my eating to normal levels." If Shiro had counted the tally marks, there would be more than fifty sets of them, with a few lines that weren't crossed out at all, equalling fifty years and four months of being the troll under a bridge.
"So, what does it mean if we get hungry?" the child asked with a small bit of fear in her tone. "Have no worries, Nina. Feeling hungry means that you have a degree of power. You have the ability to become a soul reaper, if you so choose. The main benefits are having easy access to food, water, shelter, and respect if you are deserving of it. If you prefer living out here, then you have no need to become a soul reaper." Mitsuoki informed her. Nina nodded just before a dragonfly flew by and landed right in the middle of her forehead, just above her eyes. She looked up at it, tilting her head back while trying to cross her eyes. Mitsuoki held out his finger and the dragonfly flew off of Nina and to his index finger. "If a normal soul is interested, they can train rigorously to become a soul reaper."
The sound of a wagon moving over the bridge was heard and Mitsuoki had quickly moved from under it to see who it was. "Excuse me!" Mitsuoki had shouted from down below, causing the wagon to slow to a stop. "Are you a trader?" he asked and the wagon driver said that he was, also throwing in that he was moving a variety of items. "Shiro, you should see his wares. If there is something you fancy, I am more than happy to pay for it." he said to the human. No matter how expensive an item was, even if it required silver or gold, Mitsuoki would have a coin to pay it with. The merchant would even give them a discount since Mitsuoki was a soul reaper.
Despite Mitsuoki assuring her it was a small matter the silence and seeming lack of forgiveness on Mitsuoki's part, made Shiro realize that this was probably a landmine to avoid touching upon in their future conversations... The silence which followed caught Shiro thinking about her own losses... Which did little to help cheer up the situation...
Seeing fish in the river, Shiro wondered if even those were spirits. Perhaps of fish that had been caught and eaten in the Human world? It was a strange thought, one that Shiro didn't really care much to have answered so she kept quiet about her curiosity. "Under this bridge? This doesn't seem like it would be a very hospitable place to live..." Shiro noted but went over to inspect the oddities carved into the walls. She was astonished to see so many marks. Just how long had he spent down here... Even she hadn't had to live like this. Not since Mr. Rose picked her up, offered her a place to live... Food, even her own proper bed. Was this really what waited people after their passing? It seemed far more harsh than simply dying if everyone had to come here and deal with living conditions like this... Shiro shuddered. Living like this after dying did not appeal to her. She'd always been told that those who pass on would go to a better place, but judging from the social statuses and separations that the Soul Society seemed to use, this did not appear to be the case.
"I kinda wish that's how it was in the Human World... Not needing to eat simply because you don't have any spiritual power. Eating only because you want to taste something good and delicious, and not because you would die if you didn't eat..." Shiro mumbled after watching the girl's reactions to Mitsuoki's explanations about pluses training to become soul reapers. Even the dragonflies didn't seem to fear people here... Though when Shiro cautiously approached Mitsuoki in an attempt to get a better look at the insect, it abruptly flew away... "So... if pluses with high spiritual power become hungry... what happens if they can't get any food?" Shiro asked, curious. If Pluses didn't need food to survive, but pluses with spiritual power got hungry... would they just stay hungry and live on or was there a kind of penalty for remaining hungry too long? To Shiro, even not needing to eat in general was a bit of an odd thing, though these being spirits it at least made a bit more sense.
"Ah...? That's alright you don't have to do that." Shiro raised her hands to protest Mitsuoki's offer of generosity. That is until she started going over what the trader had in stock and she realized they used a different kind of currency than they did in her world. "Are you sure it's alright?" Shiro asked Mitsuoki for confirmation. If he insisted then she would cave, looking to the wares before picking out a small, silvery-white looking circular locket. Opening it revealed a blue velvet interior and clasps to hold a single small picture or thin object inside. "I'll take this then if it's alright." Shiro would give Mitsuoki a warm smile, holding up the locket to show him.
A question had come about from Shiro about what happens if a soul doesn't eat. Mitsuoki thought it was a somewhat silly question since no species could survive without food, if they felt hunger or a need to eat. He didn't show any signs of this thought, however. Mitsuoki had said "Normally, you do not notice that you are hungry at first. Eventually, you begin feeling weak as your spirit energy reserves begin dwindling. If you ignore that, this weakness will progress to a sensation of dizziness and lightheadedness. If still ignored, you will collapse. I did this several times, and it was to my fortune that the villagers here are not cruel people. After this happens enough times, you begin associating the initial signs of weakness as being hungry, making it much easier to avoid the latter issues."
At the trader's wagon, Shiro had asked if Mitsuoki was sure it was okay for her to pick something out. He said "It is quite alright. I would be a dishonorable host if I were to send you back with nothing but the memory of this place." to let her know that it was perfectly fine for her to get something. Shiro had chosen a small locket that was silver-ish-white-ish, and circular in shape. "An excellent choice! That was made by a man in the eight rukon district. I normally would ask for three gold pieces for it, buuuut on account of your boyfriend, here, I'm willing to go down to two." Mitsuoki had pulled two gold coins from his sleeve and set it in the merchant's hand, deciding not to correct him since it was unlikely that they'd ever meet again. The soul society was a big place and this guy seemed to travel a lot, meaning there were seventy nine other districts... seventy one... sixty eight, if he avoided the trashy ones where he'd be killed and/or mugged.
Mitsuoki would look at Shiro after she put the locket on, if she did, and say "It looks very nice on you." as a compliment. If she didn't immediately put it on, Mitsuoki would say nothing about it at all. Either way, Mitsuoki's next course of action would be turning back to the village and saying "Come, I shall introduce you both to this village's elder."
"So spirits can't tell when they're hungry?" Shiro found this fact to be quite odd. Hunger seemed pretty obvious to her, but then she did possess a physical body so the signs of hunger were very much a physical thing. Something easy to notice. To Shiro, hunger felt like a void. Then there were the obvious audible signs, something She found quite embarrassing whenever it happened. It sounded like the signs were a bit different. Getting used to new indications of hunger instead of the ones she already associated hunger with did seem like it might require some getting used to in order to recognize.
Three gold pieces!? Shiro couldn't be sure if that amount of money was a lot for Soul Society but just the thought of three solid pieces of gold being handed over for such a small trinket sounded ridiculously expensive to her. Even the two the trader asked for seemed expensive. If it meant pure gold pieces... Shiro looked to Mitsuoki with worried eyes. Was he really alright with her having something that cost so much? It seemed so as she observed him handing over the currency without a second thought to the matter. "I... I dunno what to say... T-thank you." Shiro's eyes shone with genuine appreciation. No one had ever gotten her something this expensive before. She couldn't honestly tell if the locket were actually worth so much money but she wouldn't be ungracious for it. "How does it look?" Shiro asked Mitsuoki, closing up the locket before putting it around her neck. The thing would probably end up wrapped around her wrist later for the simple fact that a necklace simply wouldn't stay properly in place in the midst of a fight or her training sessions. But for now she wore the gift as it should be, as a necklace. She didn't even correct the trader's misunderstanding regarding their relationship, dreading what might happen should he find out they weren't together like that.
"You really think so?" Shiro blushed at Mitsuoki's complement. Did he really mean that And not just nice but he'd even given her a really nice "Thank you." Shiro's cheeks flushed even deeper red at his appreciation. Given normal standards, nothing about what they were doing could by any means be considered normal. She was far removed from her home, her world even. Together with a Shinigami, or as some might call him a ghost or spirit. Together, in the Soul Society. Despite all this Shiro was glad she'd met and knew Mitsuoki, even if she didn't know everything there was to know about him.
"Sure." Shiro agreed, falling in line beside Mitsuoki after he turned to head towards the village. Village elder seemed like a tacky term but she didn't say anything about it for fear of sounding rude.
Mitsuoki walked through the town, passing a single, short street, lined with merchants that were selling their wares. He said "Here, you'll find that there's more than one form of currency." while walking past it. "All merchants accept money; but, not everyone has money. Those who have skills- crafting, farming, etcetera..., can trade their products to other merchants. Many times, they would receive a generous discount for it. For example, if that man was in need of a new wheel for his wagon, he would have willingly given that locket and several other goods for that new wheel, assuming a carpenter had one on hand or could make it. That carpenter would have likely sold the wheel for much less, otherwise. At the same time, if the carpenter needed a gift for his mistress, he would have traded two or four wheels for the same locket, assuming the trader wasn't feeling generous, that is."
Walking some more, Mitsuoki had stopped at a house that was slightly less down than the others, and had a wooden door. He knocked on the door and an extremely old looking man with a mustache opened it, looking down at Mitsuoki for a moment. He then turned his gaze towards the girl and said "It's been a while since you brought someone with you to the village, Mitsuoki." to which the soul reaper replied "This is Shiro. She is a human who has aided me in my training. I brought her here as a display of gratitude since she had expressed interest previously." The old man opened the door all the way and gestured for them to come inside.
Mitsuoki entered and went straight to the kitchen to begin making tea, the old man called for Shiro to sit in his living room. She would notice that even though the outside looked somewhat old, the inside was well maintained, and the furniture was all in good condition. "My name is Kouta, and I'm the elder of this village. While it's extremely rare to find your biological family in the soul society, I managed to stumble across my great grandfather after my passing, and together, we built this small village. It started with just this house, and eventually expanded to two homes when I fell in love. Then, more people began showing up, seeking refuge. So, we built more homes until this village was born. My lover's name was Kana, and she became a soul reaper. I joined her, and we both served for only two hundred years before she was killed by a hollow." Kouta pointed to the wall where two zanpakuto were in a wooden case with a glass panel, each in their katana forms. One had a bloodwood sheath, and the other had a pure white sheath. "After that, I returned here and my grandfather had been put back into the cycle of life and death, leaving me to guide the people in his stead. But, you do not care for an old man's tale. You wish to know details of his grandson, the one who brought you here."
If Shiro asked if Mitsuoki was actually his grandson, or given a response that implied she thought he was biologically related, Kouta would give a light chuckle and say "In this world, since we almost never find our actual family members, it's not uncommon for souls to form new families. Everyone who belongs to this village are considered my grandchildren. Though, he was originally very cold towards us and kept his distance..." Kouta paused and began getting up, moving to a nearby drawer to pull out a framed picture. "After his first visit to the soul reaper's academy, he came back with a very beautiful young lady. She was good at using kido, but quite fragile physically." Kouta walked over and gave Shiro the image of a red haired girl with bright green eyes, wearing black stockings. The girl was a solid ten, which is roughly six points higher than anyone would expect Mitsuoki to be able to score. "The two of them trained rigorously in the day and stayed awake till late at night, talking about anything that they could think of. She was the one who gave him the nickname 'mittens' but I never was told the story behind it, no one was. The children are allowed to call him by it, but anyone else... well, let's just say the air in this world gets thinner the higher you go." It was then that Mitsuoki walked out of the kitchen and set down a tray with three tea cups and some tea. "Did I miss anything?" he asked.
The more Mitsuoki showed Shiro around, the more she realized how much Soul Society resembled a world she'd only known about in history books. The fact that one could trade goods rather than currency for a product or service, only proved to strengthen this fact. The variation in merchant handling. How much they could vary their prices based on a simple whim. Sure in the human world stores there were sales, but she couldn't just go into any store and expect them to trade their wares for something other than money. In some ways Shiro was impressed that the Soul Society had held onto material trading.
Shiro stopped when Mitsuoki stopped, taking her eyes off of all the strangeness around her and turning to focus on the structure the Shinigami had stopped in front of. This place had a door, unlike the hut earlier where the kids lived. Shiro hung back a small distance behind Mitsuoki as he went up to the door and knocked on it. A moment later an elderly looking man appeared to greet them. "It's nice to meet you sir" Shiro bowed respectfully greeting the old man after being introduced by Mitsuoki. She noted his gesture, accepting them into the building and she followed Mitsuoki inside.
Shiro was at a little bit of a loss when Mitsuoki broke from them and headed straight to another room within the elder's home. Or at least she figured it was his home. It seemed like one and appeared to be rather well cared for. Shiro's distraction was interrupted when the man called for her to take a seat. With Mitsuoki off in another room, seemingly doing his own thing... Shiro followed into the living room and promptly took a seat on one of the couches. The man introduced himself as Kouta and proceeded to give the girl a brief synopsis of the village's history. Her eyes drew to the two swords held inside a glass encased fixture upon the wall when Kouta mentioned them. Did this mean that Kouta, Like Mitsuoki, was also a Shinigami? Shiro stored the thought when the old man indicated an interest in telling her about Mitsuoki.
"Is Mitsuoki actually your grandson or...?" Shiro felt a little silly asking. Typically, or at least typically for her and all generally recognized human society, if someone called another as a grandson it usually hinted at a biological family standing. This didn't seem to be the case though as Kouta explained the definition of family that seemed to hold true for many of those who lived within Soul Society. Actually Shiro was quite surprised at Kouta's lack of surprise. It'd been her belief that the fact she still remained a living breathing human would be of some surprise or concern to the people of this world. Yet no one seemed to give her presence a second thought when they found out. "Is it normal for humans to come here when they aren't dead?" Now that the words escaped her, traveling with her voice, Shiro felt a little ashamed to be asking such a question. In some ways she wasn't even sure the answer to her question would even be necessary, yet she'd asked it anyway...
Accepting the picture frame, Shiro turned it over in her hands to view its contents. It was a framed image of a girl, though the angle seemed a bit strange even for a photograph. According to Kouta, this was someone Mitsuoki had spent a lot of time with, someone he obviously held close to his heart. Shiro's heart throbbed a little while looking at the picture. She felt something, not sadness or jealousy, but a different feeling she couldn't quite place. Almost as if... Shiro buried the curious emotion as Mitsuoki reentered the room carrying a refreshment of tea for the three of them. "This girl... How close were you exactly?" Shiro looked up, catching Mitsuoki's eyes in hers. She didn't point out or show off the photo to him but if he noticed her holding it, he'd likely know right away who it was Shiro asked him about.
