Naomi smiled to herself as she flipped through one of her old academy notebooks. She had always been an obsessive note-taker, whether it was in lectures, seminars, training drills or even out on the field. Her tutors criticised her for scribbling down observations and thoughts in one of a collection of small, jotter pads rather than watching what was going on around her. But Naomi had made her notes regardless, and was now hoping to make use of them. Two days had passed since she had been discharged from hospital (though in truth she left without going through the formal process of signing out) and she was on her way to feeling her best. Indeed, today’s training was meant to blow away the cobwebs and maybe even learn something new in the process.
The blue-eyed shinigami closed the dark green notebook and slipped it inside an interior pocket of her shihakushō. Standing up, Naomi walked over to where her zanpakuto was positioned carefully on a low shelf in her modest quarters. She quickly attached her weapon to her left hip before leaving her room. Hayato, a shinigami from the Yonbantai, was her training partner for today, and she was hoping to not only improve her various battle techniques, but to also gain a friend. Naomi didn’t know much about Hayato, she had only met him briefly a couple of days ago, but he seemed like a nice enough person and somebody she could get along with. She hadn’t made any friends at all since leaving the academy (admittedly she was companionless as a student too) and was eager to change this fact.
Naomi contemplated about the potential of striking up a new friendship amongst other things as she made her way along towards the training fields. Though she was in no hurry, the rose-haired shinigami couldn’t help but walk swiftly towards her destination. The air felt a lot fresher than it had been recently and there was a slight breeze. ‘Perfect weather for training’, Naomi mused.
Still in deep thought, Naomi arrived at the edges of Seireitei’s expansive training grounds. She decided to wait at the edges of an open grassy area, close to the entrance of the grounds, in the hope that she might see Hayato as he arrived. Quickly, Naomi began to worry that she had gotten here too early, and would be waiting alone for some time. She cursed herself for being so keen to arrive so prematurely; starting to twirl her ponytail around her left index finger anxiously.
“Why do I always have to be so impatient,” Naomi sighed. She had only been waiting thirty seconds…

It was time for the spar that Hayato had agreed upon with the newly awaken Naomi. It had only been two days and Hayato would be lying if he said he wasn’t surprised that she was up to the task of training so quickly after having woken from her roughly three year coma. However, even on that first day when she had awoken, it was clear she was determined to overcome any difficulties that she may have been faced with and although she fell then she had made it a surprising distance before having done so, she was strong willed that was for sure and clearly loyal to the serreitei as she was more than anxious to get back into everything she had missed within her squad as soon as possible. It was a bit of fresh air seeing someone so positive and driven. The people in the hospital that Hayato saw day in and day out typically seemed to possess quite the opposite trait, having a more downward demeanor and outlook on the future.
Hayato crossed the Serreitei on his way towards the training grounds where he was to meet Namoi, his zanpakuto strapped and prepared at his side, his medical gear, out of habit, in its usual spot slung across his left shoulder. Hayato pondered what it was about Naomi that made him accept her offer to train so willingly, was it her loyalty, her kindness or was it that he knew he needed the training just as much as Namoi most likely did? It often times crossed his mind how useless in battle he was, outside of his shikai his skills were almost non-existent, it strained him a bit, made him think he wasn’t worthy to be anywhere even outside of the hospital.
Hayato sighed as the training ground came into view, it had seemed as though time had progressed a bit quicker than he had anticipated, and as he continued to walk he looked around the area, trying to find Naomi so that he could meet up with her to begin their training, he had hoped she hadn’t been waiting long, this was the first thought that ran through his head as he spotted her and began to walk up to her.
“Hello.” Hayato said with a smile, “You’re looking even better then you were only a few days ago, much quicker than most would have healed up.”
Naomi began to panic. Her mind zipped around, thinking up a variety of different explanations as to why Hayato hadn’t arrived yet to train with her. ‘I must have gotten the wrong day, I’m such an idiot. I was so careful to mark the date on the calendar though, I was so certain. No, maybe I’m in the wrong place? But where else would we agree to train? I’m sure we decided to meet at the training grounds; where else would we go to train together? We should have settled upon a specific place rather than just the training grounds in general! I’m such an idiot!’
She was so caught up in her panicked thoughts, that Naomi didn’t realise Hayato was approaching her until he had spoken to her. The socially awkward shinigami did her best not to appear startled by her training partner’s sudden arrival, though in truth he had simply walked up, smiling and waving towards him.
“H-hey Hayato, good to see you again,” Naomi said feeling a lot more relaxed now he was here. She felt a little ridiculous for getting herself in such a tizzy, guessing she had probably only been waiting a matter of minutes, if that. “I’m feeling a lot better thank you. It feels good to be up and about, and I’ve settled back into things now, though there are a few things I still need to do….” Naomi trailed off, not wanting to go on one of her tangents. She reflexively began to move her left hand to play with her hair, but stopped herself just in time.
“Shall we make a start on training?” Naomi asked. “I’ve got a few ideas of what I’d like to do, but I’d be more than happy to go along with whatever training you want to do.” The rose-haired shinigami felt a smack of smugness, feeling confident with her social interaction so far. She mentally ticked off everything she needed to do when meeting someone and quickly realised she had forgotten to ask how Hayato was. Naomi inwardly cursed herself.
“I’m so sorry, I forgot to ask how you are!” she interjected, most likely interrupting her training partner in one way or another.

Hayato couldn’t help but laugh a little after Naomi was finished talking, he hadn’t known her long, but already could tell she had a habit of talking non-stop almost without restraint. She was talking quicker than she could think and go herself all flustered too, it was amusing to watch not that Hayato would ever say that specifically to Naomi.
“Relax Naomi. It’s all ok, no need to worry about something so little as not asking how I was, but I suppose since you asked now I’ll let you know.” Hayato said with a little smirk. “I’ve been good, keeping myself busy mostly with normal duties around the hospital, other than that though I don’t think anything of extreme interest has happened.”
“Now…” Hayato paused for a moment thinking, “In the ways of training I’m truly open and free for whatever you think will best help you out. I’m sure I’m equally as rusty as you might be when it comes to all this, so anything would be worth the refresher. So, what is it you want to train? After all you have to get back in good standing with your squad, show them being away for three years didn’t take its toll.”
Hayato stretched his arms out above his head as he listened, waiting for a response from Naomi. It was clear she was a kind girl and her intentions were all of the best nature, Hayato couldn’t help though to see how she was in battle. Often times people changed when they fought, on the field and off the field had devastating effects to ones’ personality so it would truly be interesting if there was a change to her nervous yet extremely kind outlook on things if they sparred.
Yet at the same time Hayato desperately tried to think of what he wanted to train, he hadn’t even put any thought in it, a bit too wrapped up in the actual training potential of all of this, what he wanted to train was lost. At this point it seemed like he was going to have to rely on what was relevant at the time and the few techniques he had read up on, but had not put to use in much effective training. Maybe at least then he could get something out of all of this, get better, not just be someone who fixes the wounded, but can protect those from getting wounded as well.
“I’m glad to hear you’ve been keeping well,” Naomi said. She was pleased that Hayato didn’t seem offended by the fact she had only asked how he was at the last minute. In fact, she was sure that he seemed a little amused by it. Naomi laughed a little too, realising that she must be coming across a little intensely. She tended to over analyse and over think her behaviour when talking to people she wasn’t especially familiar with. The fact that Hayato had laughed a little bit made her feel more at ease and sure that, given time, the two of them could become good friends.
It was true what Hayato had said; the main impetus behind her wanting to train was to show that she was still more than capable of performing her duties in the Sanbantai. Naomi felt as though the higher ups in here division were unsure she had fully recovered, giving her the next few weeks off to recuperate. But she was determined to show them that she was more than ready.
“I was thinking about practising some Kidō that I haven’t attempted since leaving the academy,” Naomi said in answer to Hayato’s question. “I recently discovered some of my old notebooks whilst unpacking my old things. Some of them are a little tricky, but I’m sure with your help I’ll be able to master them!” she said with a smile. There were several Kidō techniques that Naomi had started to learn whilst she was a student, but hadn’t yet fully grasped how to perform them. She considered herself to be quite adept at both Bakudō and Hadō and it was much to her shame that she hadn’t added any new techniques to her repertoire in quite some time.
Naomi pulled out the notebook tucked within a pocket in her shihakushō, flicking through the well thumbed pages to find her notes on kidō. She briefly stopped on a page detailing some ideas for reiryoku battle technique ideas, before looking back up to Hayato. The blue-eyed shinigami smiled nervously, unsure whether to mention these ideas. After a few seconds pause she had mustered up the courage and decided to go for it. Hayato had said he was open to whatever she wanted to practice.
“There are also a couple of reiryoku techniques that I came up with several years ago, but I never got them to a stage where I felt confident that I could use them in battle,” Naomi explained, playing with her ponytail anxiously. “Maybe you could help me with them after we’ve practised kidō?”
“Kido is always a good starting place. It is after all, us being shinigami and all, it’s like our racial advantage.” Hayato said as he continued to listen to Naomi. “I’m sure you’ll get them in no time. Your physical recovery has been so quick I’m sure your training will be right behind it.”
Hayato paused for a moment, “As for me though, I’m not sure that will be as much the case. I’m a bit more lax in my studies outside of my responsibilities at the hospital. It’s left me in a bit of a…weakened state I suppose. I have little experience outside of a few low level kido and techniques, so you’ll most likely have to be the one to bear with me. I made some mental notes on techniques I want to train, but we’ll see how good the training gets if such things will come to be.”
It was true, Hayato had a nagging feeling that was always with him, the feeling of being unable to help with anything that didn’t require healing already wounded people. What about protecting those from getting wounded? What about defending against hollows? Was he not destined to ever do such a thing? Whatever the case might have been though, Hayato had to admit it was good to get off his chest. Just talking about it made him slightly more at ease, it seemed Naomi was rather easy to talk to and made the environment, despite it being pre-spar, relaxing.
He listened again as she spoke on more techniques she would like to try and perfect, techniques she herself had come up with, which was an astounding and exciting feat all on its own.
“Your own techniques? That’s amazing. You should definitely try those out, nothing better to keep people surprised in battle then a technique only you would know!” Hayato exclaimed.
The shinigami turned from Namoi moving away from her some five meters or so before turning back around to face her.
“Well then I suppose there is no more reason to delay it any further, whenever you’re ready, let’s get this started and get us both in prime fighting condition.“ Hayato said with a smile, a hint of anxiousness in his voice.
It seemed Hayato considered himself to be a little weaker than he should be. Naomi empathised with him. Similarly to how Hayato had found himself concentrating more on working at the hospital than strengthening his fighting capabilities, Naomi had found herself focusing more on division related tasks too. She supposed that both of them had been rather selfless, sacrificing their own time for the benefit of others rather than using that time to suit their own needs. Sometimes it paid to be a little selfish, and besides, by strengthening themselves they would ultimately be benefiting Seireitei.
Naomi blushed a little as she heard Hayato’s reaction to her relating that she had developed her own reiryoku techniques. She just hoped that she’d be able to use them effectively as she hadn’t ever really had time to practice or develop them.
The rose-haired shinigami watched as her training partner took several paces back, giving the two of them room in which to begin sparring. Her heart’s beat began to quicken as she started realise this was the first time another shinigami would see her fighting style for quite some time. Naomi even began to worry whether she’d be able to draw her zanpakuto properly. ‘No,’ she thought to herself, ‘I can’t be this nervous. Besides, Hayato doesn’t seem like the sort of person that would laugh at me even if I did make the most basic of errors.’
“I think we’ll start off with a little swordplay, if that’s ok,” Naomi said as she returned her notebook to the inside pocket of her shihakushō. “It sounds like we both need to sharpen up our zanpakuto technique, and I think I want to be a little warmed up before trying out some kidō.”
Naomi adjusted her position slightly, standing sideways so her right shoulder faced Hayato. She drew her zanpakuto and held it with both hands, its blade pointing towards her sparring partner. The turquoise grip of her katana felt both alien and familiar in her hold. It seemed to Naomi that it had been too long since she had used her sword even in a mock battle, and she began to eagerly await the start of their spar.
“I’m ready whenever you are, Takeda-san,” Naomi would say as she waited for Hayato to draw his sword and make the first move. “I don’t mind if you take a few swings at me first,” she would say trying to sound confident, hoping to instil trust in her training partner. “I might even try to throw in one of my own techniques if I can.” Naomi would say smiling, again trying to show a degree of sureness in her own abilities, though in truth she doubted she’d be able to pull off the technique she had in mind correctly straight away. She’d at least be able to respond properly and block Hayato’s sword strikes though…, right?
“Zanjutsu it is, should be a good warm-up for sure.” Hayato said calmly trying to sound as confident as he could as he unsheathed his zanpakuto carefully, watching as Naomi did the same. He took his sealed Zanpakuto out and pointed it, holding it in both hands, out towards Naomi, as it seemed she had done to him already.
“To be honest I’m pretty sure I could do with any training at all, so anything you want to do and in whatever progression I’m fine with, Namoi.”
Hayato nodded as Namoi spoke, announcing she was ready to begin, allowing for Hayato to begin the session. It had been quite some time since he had held his zanpakuto in this manner. In a manner in which to fight, it had certainly been too long at that, for although he talked to his spirit often, actually fighting and using techniques he had was something that had completely fallen to the wayside, unless healing techniques were included in the mix. It was a constant fear on his mind something he tried his best to repress but as of late found it nearly impossible to do.
Hayato took a deep breath, watching his opponent as he stood there, mentally preparing himself before moving, it was tough for him, having so little experience out on the field made it so every movement he made seemed as though it might have been the wrong move. He had very little to no actual instincts when it came to battle and it made all this even more difficult, but despite all of that, all of the doubt he knew what he had agreed to with Naomi. He wasn’t going to let someone down, especially in something as trivial as a practice spar just because of his inability to get past such mental blockades.
Hayato took another breath and in an instant shunpo’d towards Naomi, blade in hand, coming out of his step right in front of Naomi with a swing of his blade coming from her right shoulder down to her left hip. His hand shaking slightly as his blade came down, he was not confident with his techniques, his stance, anything, although he knew basic maneuvers outside of that he was clueless and his confidence surely showed that.
Hayato had indicated that he was also ready, drawing his zanpakuto and holding it so the blade pointed towards Naomi. The blue-eyed shinigami’s heart began to pound in her chest as she anticipated her training partner’s first move. She could already feel adrenaline coursing around her body, every inch of her skin tingling nervously. This would be her first serious workout since her coma, having only done some basic, light exercises prior to today. Naomi knew she needed to step things up if she wanted to return to where she was previously, let alone make progress and improve her ability in battle. From what Hayato had said to her, it seemed as though he was in a similar position, requiring training of any form to sharpen his skills. Both shinigami were a bit rusty and this sparring session should bring their cutting edge back.
As Naomi reflected on her current state, she noticed Hayato preparing himself to strike before suddenly flash stepping from view. She had just done enough to brace herself as he reappeared in front of her, his sword making a cutting motion diagonally across her body. Reflexively she brought her own blade up to block the strike, pushing most of her weight behind it to prevent herself from being pushed back. Hayato’s attack was a little shaky and whether this was through him holding back or through a lack of confidence in his own abilities, Naomi did not know.
Deciding to try and capture the initiative, rather than attempting to pre-empt and counter her opponent’s blows, Naomi would push with some force against Hayato to try and force him back. Were she to be successful with this, she would attempt to hook her left foot behind Hayato’s right ankle in an attempt to trip him to the ground. This move was a bit of a cheap trick, Naomi having learnt it during her sparring sessions in the academy. She had been on the receiving end of it many a time, knowing all too well how effective it could be if pulled off successfully. She was also well aware that were Hayato to remain on his feet or not be taken off balance, her leg would be left open to attack.
Hayato heard as his shaky stance and grip met with the more confident one of Namoi, the tinge of two blades meeting and locking. Neither one was currently moving; they were simply in stale mate, however it would only last like that for a few moments as Namoi pressed forward with more might, catching the already unsure Hayato off his footing.
As he was pushed away though it seemed as that was not all Naomi had planned as she extended her foot, hooking behind Hayato’s own. It was a rookie mistake for Hayato no to have been able to catch it, but he was far from out of practice in one-on-one fighting, words were hard to even describe how much so and so Hayato stumbled with a small grunt, but by some miracle was able to remain on his feet, though not in an shape for an ease counter-attack. Instead Hayato stumbled back a few feet, embarrassed at the idiotic movements he had made.
Trying to make a successful comeback he tried not to delay as he came in again toward Namoi swinging his blade at horizontally across her midsection. His movements though were still shaky and without strong confidence, fighting in general had always been one of Hayato’s weak points and this spar was only currently showing more to that effect. It was certainly a struggle mentally for Hayato, only seemingly reinforcing how truly pitiful he was in some regards as a shinigami.
Where zanjutsu wasn’t Hayato’s strong suit though he had been practicing some bakudo when they moved on in their training, for now though he needed to keep his eye on the prize it were, feeling weak was already enough of a distraction he needed to make sure that he could focus as much as he could on the sword fight in front of him. If anything at least he was getting some practice, right?
Naomi felt rather guilty as she saw Hayato stumble back several paces, her trip working as she had hoped. He had not fallen over, however, remaining on his feet and looking as though he was ready to make a quick strike back in reply. This impressed Naomi; Hayato had seemed very unsure of his capabilities in fighting before sparring, but he was already showing he had some promise. She empathised with him, knowing only too well what it was like to doubt yourself and hold back, not wanting to make a fool of yourself.
Quickly Naomi realised she had been idly thinking for too long as Hayato closed the space between them making a swing at her running perpendicular to her spine. Reacting as swiftly as she could, Naomi brought up her zanpakuto to block, using her left forearm to support the reverse of the blade and holding the grip firmly in her right hand. Though Hayato’s attack was still a little shaky, he had taken her by surprise and recovered well. Naomi couldn’t help but feel glad that her sparring partner was already showing some progress.
“That last swing caught me off guard,” Naomi said as she jumped back a few times and created some distance, “had you been more confident I’d have been in trouble!” She was a little annoyed with herself, not for underestimating her opponent, but for overanalysing him and not letting herself focus on each individual moment. If Naomi really wanted to better herself and help Hayato train, she’d have to be more attentive.
“It’s my turn to take the initiative,” Naomi said, feinting to the right before using Shunpo to disappear and move to the left. She would reappear to Hayato’s right, crouching slightly and holding her zanpakuto in her left hand. Rapidly, Naomi would swing her zanpakuto at Hayato’s legs, just below his knees. She had no intention to wound her sparring partner, of course, so it was with the blunt, reverse side that she led with. Naomi realised that she was again using a slightly underhanded move and hoped Hayato wouldn’t be too annoyed by this. In her mind she felt she was doing him a favour. The enemies of Seireitei didn’t fight fairly and it was important to face that fact now whilst training rather than in a more dangerous setting.

Naomi was quick blocking Hayato’s attack yet again. For someone who had just gotten out of the fourth hospital, after such a long time immobile in her coma, she certainly didn’t take any time to get back into the swing of things. Her movements were fluid and concise blocking when needed and not pushing herself any further then she needed to, or at least so it seemed in the ease she carried herself in contrast especially to Hayato himself. On top of that too though, Hayato could not help but to notice that she was not even using the bladed side of her zanpakuto instead relying on the reverse dull blade, whether that be because she thought this to be a simple dual, not wanting to injure someone, or that she felt confident in her abilities to be able to maintain such a maneuver were unknown to Hayato, but he continued forward apply pressure to the blade of Namoi’s as they met.
“That’s surprising because you don’t look as though you’ve been caught off guard at all.” Hayato said with a smirk as he looked at Naomi, their blades still locked, he knew what she said was true, but he remained silent. He needed to be more confident in himself, his movements, and his actions, all of it. How could you be expected to make your movements mean anything if you yourself were unsure of them, however operating and battle field maneuvers were as different as two things could be for him.
Hayato however quickly perked up as Namoi spoke again before disappearing quickly, reappearing, far quicker than he had hoped, to his right. Hayato quickly tried to move, escaping one of his legs, however the remaining leg, his left was unable to move as quick, maybe it was still his lack of confidence or the surprise in the attack, but it was uncertain either way, the blunt side of the blade skimmed his shin, which would certainly leave a bruise as he staggered back a few feet from the impact.
Damn it….
“You’re quick, huh?” Hayato would say as he rubbed his shin slightly. “Good move.”
“Definitely guess I’ll be picking up a thing or two from you, if I don’t get bruised up too bad first.” Hayato said smirking.
“Let’s go again.” Hayato raised his zanpakuto out and towards Naomi. “No more lucky shots.”
Naomi’s guilt began to build; her strike had found its mark, making contact with one of Hayato’s legs. Again, however, he had managed to remain on his feet, staggering back a few paces away from her. Naomi made an effort to stand upright from her crouching position, but stopped midway as she began to feel a little light headed. She became suddenly aware that her heart was beating very heavily in her chest, evidently struggling to keep up with the series of swift manoeuvres she was making her body make. Perhaps she should tone it back a bit. She didn’t want to embarrass herself in front of Hayato again by collapsing, after all.
Naomi felt some relief when her training partner began to speak to her. As she listened to him speak, she put her right hand to her chest, focusing on taking deep breaths to help return her heart rate to normal. She hoped Hayato wouldn’t notice what she was doing, not because she was concerned of looking weak in front of him, but because she was beginning to really enjoy their spar. Naomi couldn’t remember the last time she enjoyed going toe to toe in combat with another, and she didn’t want it to stop now.
“Thank you,” she replied in response to Hayato’s compliment, her breaths still somewhat laboured. “I’m glad you’re finding our training session useful so far, I was worried it would only be for my own benefit.” As Hayato indicated that he was ready to go another round, Naomi made efforts to return to a standing position. She juddered uncomfortably as she straightened her legs, again feeling lightheaded. The young shinigami raised her head and brought her zanpakuto up to show that she was also set to continue, but in truth she was still recovering from the last couple of rounds.
Naomi began to make a move towards Hayato, but quickly found herself struggling just to keep balance, her eyes unable to fully focus on the world around her. She stopped where she was, digging her zanpakuto into the earth to help her remain upright. She cursed herself for feeling so weak. Her body was apparently not as ready to fight as her mind was.
“Give me a second,” Naomi panted, hoping Hayato would understand. “I just need a minute to regain my breath.”

Hayato watched as Naomi advanced, but then suddenly stopped, her skills were no doubt good and her executions were better than Hayato’s own despite her lengthy time in the hospital. If anything she was truly an interesting girl and surprising, couldn’t forget that of course.
Hayato nodded as Namoi thanked him, it was clear though her breathing was a bit more elevated than normal, though everyone took on sparring different physically, it was still entirely possible she was fine simply out of breath for a brief moment, nothing to at least worry about right this moment. The more though Naomi moved though, the more her actions seemed a bit less confident than they had been, she moved forward however she swayed as she did so, it was clear to Hayato that despite her saying she was ready to continue onward that right now couldn’t have been further from the truth.
“Yes, of course I’m benefitiing from this, I don’t see how there is a way I couldn’t be. I told you most of my skills outside of the realm of medicine are extremely rusty. You though? Are you sure you’re ok ? You seem a bit a unstable.” Hayato said calmly as he took a step forward towards her.
“Don’t push yourself sooner. You’ll end up coming to visit me and not on a social call.” Hayato let a small smile come across his face.
“But in all seriousness, we have all the time you need. If you need a break take all the time you need. I’m not going anywhere right now. Do you need anything though your breathing is a bit fast after all.”
Hayato brought down his own zanpakuto loosely holding it letting it dangle in his light grip as he came within arm’s length of Namoi, waiting to hear her response and make sure she was ok, or could easily be attended to if she needed anything urgently.
