So theres a bit of confusion going around about the themes for releases. Does a character need to stick to an overall theme for:
- Shikai to Bankai
- Human Powers to Shinigami/Hollow releases.

AFAIK Shikai to Bankai needs a common theme but can't find where in the guides it says so.
Human powers to others absolutely not. A sub-shini can have totally unrelated shinigami powers and human powers. There is a bit about what happens upon death in the human guide that tells you that if you die you either get a free rank up and lose all your techs or you can choose to keep your techs and re-work them into what is appropriate for shini/hollow.

As Marcia said, Shikai to Bankai should have a similar theme, though how much you stretch the word "similar" is up to you.
As for human to shini/hollow, if you're talking a human dying and becoming one of the two, the theme probably -should- be similar, but it doesn't -have- to be.

You definitely can't have an elemental change between shikai and bankai. But besides that its all in the wording.

Semi-related to this and something I considered before, would a zan were you gather up heat in shikai (cold powers) and then release that gathered heat (heat powers) in bankai be allowed? |

The wiki itself states that a shikai and a bankai need to be at least loosely related. |
