Rasen walks down the street, the white walls of the buildings around him pale and boring to the eye as they always are. Maybe soon he will be able to explore out into the outer districts and find something other than patrols and white walls to look at. This particular walk, while not normally in his rounds is one that he has never had to make before, on his way to a First Division swords trainer of decent repute. So good in fact that Ikkaku, his direct supervisor, instructed him to take the evaluation course and find out if she would be willing to train him. Assuming that she does select him Rasen would undergo what Ikkaku explained to be a 'fast paced, ass whooping' of a class. If Rasen managed to make it out the other side he himself would be willing to spar with his lesser one time just out of the respect of him passing.
Rounding a corner the training grounds appear, dirt floors and a stone ring surrounding it to keep the dirt from being blown out. On all sides of the ring there are twelve foot high walls to keep any debris from flying away and too keep any observers out of harm, not to mention to not let their gawking eyes distract the trainees. He was about fifteen minuets early, not wanting to make a bad impression on the teacher, her skill having to be impressive for Ikkaku to find her worth sending him to. What would she look like? Battle scared most likely, riddled with wounds from her experience, most likely older to demand the respect of her peers. Possibly armor and a beast of a blade, one thin and long for her sword play. Even in her old age though she would most likely be attractive from her intensive training regime keeping herself in good fighting condition.

It had been a while since she taught anyone anything, the last time was... a while ago. When she had first met Shio and Yorishou. She remembered the day like it was yesterday. Yorishou had been teaching a bunch of young academy students how to swing a sword properly and she had volunteered to... "help". Though to be honest, she got involved more for her own enjoyment than anything. By the time Yorishou and herself had finished warming up she doubted that those little kids could keep track of their movements at all. Now here she was teaching people again, guess there was nothing else to do with the knowledge you gained but to pass it on.
As she jumped from building to building heading towards the training grounds, the nostalgic feeling that was washing over her only became stronger. It had been peacefully lately. Especially so, and she didn't mind it at all, except it didn't do well for keeping ones fangs sharpened. Thus practice and training was a must to stay at her peak, but something told her she had yet to reach her zenith either way. She landed one of the pillars supporting the walls of the training ground, anyone present would suddenly catch a hint of her heavier than normal reiatsu.
Blue eyes stared down at the grounds, she saw one young man walking in, he was early. Hmm punctual people usually made for good students. Usually. With a quick step she would move from her current location, exiting some 20m away from Rasen, seating herself beneath a tree to his right. This was her favourite tree.
"Well, you're an early one aren't you. Were you excited or nervous?"

Looking about Rasen didn't see anyone, which would be fine in his own opinion, as training with a superior would most definitely be leading to his legs getting cut from under him in some way. An audience for that just seemed less than desirable. A voice from nearby catches his attention and makes him spin about, no one was there a moment ago, he knew it but even so there she was, another Shinigami that appeared from nowhere. Not just any Shinigami though, the ambient aura resonating from her so strong that he in fact had to close his eyes for a moment to adjust to it so that his eyes would not water.
Bowing instantly to her Rasen clears his throat. "No Mam, I just believe that to make a good start you need to be early because if you are on time you are late," Standing back up he gets a good look at her, his eyes adjusting to the spiritual pressure. Surprise, while not showing on his face, was almost a given. He was so far off in his expectations of her that seeing her now he was almost in disbelief, the teacher here to educate him in his swordplay being no more than twenty in appearance. While that would be a lie, as all Shinigami aged exceptionally slow he was still expecting some one more...experienced in appearance.
"I am here as per Ikkaku, he asked that I give you this," Pulling out a letter he hands it to his instructor," and ask that you give me some lessons to show that I can learn something new." Falling to his knees he places both hands on the ground with his forehead in the most respectful way he knows. If she would look over the letter it would say something along the lines of he is too busy, would she mind giving me a show of the ropes and kick me about a bit, personal favor, Ikkaku.

Ma'am. She couldn't very well say that she enjoyed being addressed as a ma'am. It made her sound like she was married or old, which she was up in her years by normal standards but she wasn't a ma'am. If she went with a shinigami's standards, she was still quite young, judging from the lad in front of her, there was a chance she wasn't much older than him if they weren't around the same age and still he called her ma'am.It may have been out of respect, but she wasn't really one for the whole "ma'am" thing.
"How about we not do the ma'am thing," she said as she took the letter from his hands. "Just Meilin is fine, or if you need to be formal, Tachibana sensei is ok, but preferably Meilin." She looked down at the letter upon opening it, reading what it said as Rasen proceeded to get down onto his knees to ask for permission to learn under her. The letter itself was from the third seat of the 11th squad, Ikkaku. Hmm, interesting that he'd recommend someone this young, perhaps that meant the kid had some potential. Most people she knew were concerned more with the current level of strength someone held, which she didn't blame them for it was important to know their current strength, but she was more interested by their potential for growth.
She folded the letter and slipped it into her robes with her right hand while gesturing with her left for Rasen to raise his head and stand to his feet. "Ok come on, stand up, you're making this weird." She folded both arms beneath her chest and pondered for a minute. She looked around the large training grounds. "Well I suppose for a warm up, you can about 100 laps around the grounds. Come get me when you're done." That being said she went back to relaxing beneath her favourite tree.

Okay, she seemed to be a bit more on his grounds as far as generational behavior but never the less it is always preferable to have a level of respect when addressing your superiors if not is social rank then at least in skill and power, which to Squad 11 means more than seat. "Yes, Meilin Tachibana-sensei," rising from the grounds he takes a step back and places his left hand on the hilt of Yamakyojin, expecting that the training begin. She must be some kind of prodigy if she truly was so good that Ikkaku recommended her. At that her first instruction began, tucking away the letter for safe keeping. Laps...She wanted him to run laps.
"Yes Meilin Tachibana-sensei!" starting off he begins, the first lap around the feild being as fast as a dart, the dirt from his first lap still settling as he circled around. As he passed by he saw her, taking her seat once more under the cool shade of the tree. Maybe she is building up my stamina, or she is wearing me down so that she can find out where I stand in stamina. Not going to let her show me up. Ikkaku sent me here to learn so I plan to. And so he continued, the first twenty laps all holding pace, before he begins to lag and sweat starts to bead down his forehead. Unlike most others would be doing this he was sprinting, not jogging and it was destroying him. Slowing his sprint down to a struggling jog by the time he was at fourty five. Unsure of how much farther he could grind this out he keeps going, each lap as horrible as the last but not as horrible as the next one. No wanting to stop however he drags himself on not stopping or quitting as he passes the halfway point.

For the most part, he didn't seem to be a fussy one, but she really needed to get him to work on calling her by something that didn't irk her so. Her full name followed by sensei was definitely not going down the right path, but she would handle that later, for now she rested her hands behind her head and crossed her legs at her ankle and watched as he commenced his laps. He was ok speed wise, not exceptional, but he wasn't slow either. Though at the pace he was going... she gauged he would probably burn himself out soon if he didn't slow down. She watched as he ran on, as she thought about it. What did Ikkaku senpai see in this guy?
She watched as he seriously began to slow down, to the point he was like a snail in her eyes. At this point she stood casually, entering a step and exiting to his left where she began running at a pace matching his own. "Hmm, if you get tired just from that... how do you plan to survive my training?" She upped her pace just a bit, as if egging him on as she pulled ahead a bit. "You gotta move faster than that to dodge a sword, and even faster to land a blow with your sword. And most times your opponent will likely be on par with you if not better. If you don't have the stamina for those long fights... you'll die."
For purpose of visual aid and a bit of showing off, her right hand moved switftly and adeptly to the hilt of one of her two zanpakuto on her left. She pulled back quickly, drawing the blade releasing a wave of reiatsu equal to tier III with the swing as she did so. The attack flew ahead of them quickly, whilst the speed she drew her blade at was close to that of most of the masters within the Seireitai.

Appearing next to him she edged him on, talking him through her reasons, the speed required to live and the speed required to win. With a flashy draw of a blade she removes a single Zanpakto, one of the few Dual Zanpakto he has ever seen, from its sheath in such a way that it was almost too fast for his eyes to keep up with. Finding a new renewed energy he drives on, running slightly slower than he did when he started out but keeping the steady pace, letting his feet carry him farther and farther, each of the laps letting him circle the field again and again.
By the time he reached 75 laps he was drenched in sweat, his left hand holding his Zanpakto at his side to keep it from swinging side to side from is slightly out of balance length. He drove on, by the time that he reaches 95 his body having stopped sweating and his clothes starting to dry off, his legs numb from the running but still keeping him moving. The last few laps he sped up, letting his motivation drive him on, sprinting once more as if he were in a race and that he was pulling a tie with someone. He was by no means as fast or as strong as some of the others in his squad but he was most defiantly one of the more determined, willing to do what he needs to for what ever job has come down to get done. It was by no means a glorious finish, the last lap having him fall to one knee and his hands shaking slightly under the fatigue of his run. "One...Hundred...Laps, Meilin Tachibana-sensei." Gasping for air he was not fast but he would be, faster and stronger than what he was now, and a monster with a blade to be reckoned with. People would fear his arrival like they do with Captain.

She sheathed her sword once she saw her demonstartion had warrented the wanted effect intended for its use. Stepping off to the tree again she took her seat and relaxed as she watched Rasen continue his run around the grounds. He wasn't a quitter, she'd give him that much. And that was mostly what she looked for in students. Well this was her first real student so she supposed she should say it's a trait she wanted in all her students, if she were so lucky. As he came back over to her he announced that he finished all the laps and used her full name again. If she was lucky enough, hopefully her future students wouldn't do that either.
"Since you insist on being formal, Tachibana sensei is fine. Don't go blurting my full name out everywhere." She sighed and shook her head slightly, "Well either you look like a walking corpse, but you did finish the hundred laps. And it only took you, ten minutes, for the next five I want you to take up a horse stance, and don't move an inch, and try your best not to fall."
She wasn't joking at all. The run was to make him tired, but also she needed to guage his stamina and get him on his way to raising it up even more. The horse stance... well you weren't exactly a swordsman if you had poor balance and footing. If his stance was easily broken, then his opponent would simply slip into his guard and his fight would be over before he knew it. Firm footing and excellent balance was necessity for swordplay, most people ignored it, and that's where they ended up injured or dead.

"Of Course Tachibana-sensei," Rasen stands up, rubbing the dried sweat off his forehead, fluffing his top so that there would be a bit more cool air flowing in his clothes. Rasen looks about for a spot that he would like to take the stance, the chance of an ant pile being unlikely but it only ever really needs to happen once for it to never be forgotten. Five minuets of a horse stance, while maby not savor-able would still be enough to get another sweat going. Rasen couldn't quiet get his breath, something still stifling him, like a fog in the air. Taking a breath he places his right hand on the grip of his Zanpakto and his left on the sheath as if he were going to draw it.
Letting the breath out he snaps into the horse stance, tights fists tucked into his side. His elbows parallel to each other are back behind him, his back straight and tall with his legs out at a ninety degree angle to his sides. It is like that he stays, the first four minuets of the stance rather easy in comparison to the run but still enough to get his legs to quiver slightly. Swallowing he blinks away a bead of sweat dripping into his eye and stinging as he tries to maintain his stance. The last minuet, while yes it was the same stance, seemed harder to maintain than the first four combined. His legs were becoming jello, the sprint and running that he had just run being enough for him to not be able to perform up to his normal standards. Gritting his teeth he pushes harder, keeping the stance for a few more seconds, not letting his devotion or motivation fall until he was sure that the time was up. Time now complete he collapses onto his butt, the muscles in his legs almost unwilling to co-operate but even so he gets up back to his feet, ready for the next step. "I am done Tachibana sensei"

She was almost ready to take a nap, she should've, but that wouldn't have set a good example for her student now would it? Truth be told, if he hadn't shown up early she probably would've just done these exercises on her own in order not to be bored. But alas he did, so she entertained herself by seeing just how much he could take, what his breaking point was. The kid seemed to not have one, doing everything she said diligently and without question. It was something that would've brought tears to her eyes if she'd bothered to care that much, but this was more of a trial run for the lad. If he came back after today, well then she'd kick it up a notch.
"Good good," she said standing to her own feet as he fell off his and onto his arse. She stretched then, twisting her body and leaning from side to side. Rotating her arms and stretching them out, the popping sound of her stiff joints could be heard as she made herself more limber. "Well you seem to have decent stamina, your horse stance is rigid, but after doing all those laps, I'd say it's still decent." She bent forwards, touching her toes, holding it for a ten count before bending as far backwards as she could for the same amount of time again.
"Never forget the basics, they are your foundation for everything. Anyone can learn a fancy technique, but you'll never use it to your full potential if you don't understand the basis of it." She kicked the treee beside her causing it to shake and leaves to fall. Her knees bent slightly and her eyes narrowed, her demeanour changing from the carefree and seemingly normal person she was into something that resembled cold steel, almost heartless. Her right hand again reached for her hilt, drawing swiftly as she cut through the falling leaves. Each strike was swift and fluid, as if they connecting into each other, never seeming like separate attacks, but more of a continuous flow that ceased to end. A river that kept rushing and rushing.
The leaves all fell to the ground, cut cleanly in half as she sheathed her sword once more. "You have to be quick, fluid and smooth, don't give your opponent a chance to read your next move all the while trying to read theirs. Most fancy sword techniques will leave you open and usually end up being quite easy to read which leaves you in a spot." She gestured for him to stand with his hand, figuring he'd had more than enough time during that moment to catch his breath. "I want you to do two hundred standard strikes." Again she drew her sword, placing both her hands on the hilt this time as she took her stance and held infront of her. She stepped forward with her left and swung down hard and fast as soon her foot touched the ground, then stepped back, her blade once more in place for her guard. "Just like you saw me do just now, begin." This time however she didn't move to go sit beneath the tree, but continued to do the same motion, now she would begin her own exercises. Rasen seemed diligent enough, that she needn't worry about him slacking off if she wasn't watching his every move.

Rasen sits, catching his breath and letting the sweat fall into his eyes. Wiping it away he watches his teacher, skilled and honored as she was, begin to stretch. Calestenics are important, the more limber and loose you are the more you are able to adapt too and learn from during a fight. After stretching she moves on, drumming on the basics and their importance in all things that he does with a blade, his growth to be stunted until he is able to master them. Fancy techniques, while useful to catch an opening will leave him open and unable to defend himself. In an impressive show if wither blinding speed or strength she strikes the base of the tree that she so happily resided under, knocking loose a small cloud of leaves to flutter down like snow.
Tensing her legs she springs, her additude changing quickly from open and carefree to quiet and concentrating. With a Flash she drew her blade and struck, each swipe over and over occuring before Rasen was even able to see her blade reverse for the next blow. Leaf after leaf, the falling debris vanished into a flurry of glinting metal until each of them were severed through the middle, split in two by the nearly invisible blade. With a little guidance and promting he is told to stand up and take his turn, training is going to truely begin. Taking his stance he begins with what he was instructed, two hundred standard strikes from above then snapping back to reset. Beside him she also trains, doing the same as him, the strikes adding up slowly, the number hitting about one hudred and ten before he could feel the tension in his wrist from muscle fatigue.

They were pretty much in sync as far as swinging their swords went. In fact Rasen was keeping up better than she thought he would, his stance held though still rigid, but that would be fixed over time, and he seemed to have a pretty true and strong swing with his blade. His stamina was even more impressive, she didn't see much to indicate any falter in his technique until they were about halfway through their reps. Hmm perhaps Ikkaku did send him here with something in mind besides just getting the kid out of his hair... not that he had any.
They carried on for a bit longer, each strike reaching closer to their goal of two hundred. Her own muscles were finally getting warm and she felt that she could probably up the level of her teachings somewhat, but she wasn't sure if Rasen here could handle that in his condition. She hit two hundred, but she didn't sheath her zanpakuto. She waited for Rasen to complete the set before she would give him her comments.
"Well you have potential, your strikes are strong and true, and you seem to have decent stamina so you should be fine if pursuing the sword is the way you really want to go."
She stepped away putting some distance between them, about five meters. "Now if you're feeling up to it, come at me, anyway you like. Or you can go home and come back tomorrow. The choice is yours." She stood there with her zanpakuto in her right hand waiting to see what he would do. Would he give in to the fatigue or would he try to push pass his current limits and reach a new level of mastery that he didn't have at the moment?

Rasen pushed on, his arms and body aching from the shear weight of the blade. Two hundred strikes, a minimal number to say the least but some how he was still having trouble getting finished. First the running then the horse stance, finally this...what is exhausting him on such a large scale? He had more energy than this, the small tasks that he is trying to accomplish not being enough to exhaust him so quickly normally. There had to be an outside factor, something that he is not directly noticing. Finishing the last of his strikes he sheaths his blade, his arms aching and burnt out.
Then it struck him, the air was hard to breath, like he was standing inside a pressure chamber making just breathing laborious. If anything this type of difficulty would make his training better, getting more gain from the struggle than he would normally if he was in fresh air. This pressure though, unusual in its style and effect, has to have a weird origin. Looking at his teacher Meilin he tries to source the center of the energy erupting from her, the energy that is just ambiently flowing out of her like a storm.
Taking the notes in stride he tries to catch his breath, the energy that she puts off being close to what he would imagine Captain Class energy to be like if just released frivolously. "I wish to keep training Tachibana-sensei. I have to apologize, I am not normally so easily winded. I just am having a difficult time adjusting to your Reiatsu, its shear weight making breathing a bit of a chore. I am actually enjoying it, the added level of difficulty feeling like I will benefit more."
