Gaen was doing something he had only really dreamed of doing: he was filling out some paperwork. That should be a fairly clear vision of where the young medics' priorities lay, but he was looking forward to the dizzying pile of paper because it meant he had been promoted and relegated to more important tasks than he had been prior. While he generally did enjoy making sure the anaesthetics and drugs in his supply room were kept up to date and organized, it was simple work and his mind craved some more stimulus. The notable drop in sewer cleaning shifts was also pleasant enough. The reason for his promotion (he suspected) was that he finally realized his sword's true name and with it the unleashing of its fantastic powers. Such an event opened up a lot of opportunities for the young medic, but carried along with it a certain... side effect.
OOOOH I MISS THE MISERY! Holla sang at the top of her lungs, the tune echoing in Gaen's head as he finished off the last of his reports for the afternoon. Holla, his avatar, the permanent and perpetual resident of his mind, seemed to be fond of singing, talking and generally making a racket. Some of the time, it wasn't too bad, Gaen actually sort of enjoyed listening to his avatar, who had a lovely singing voice and pretty interesting opinion on a lot of topics. She did, however, seem to have a far different taste in music, and a very strong personality when compared to the one armed medic. When writing reports, it was pretty distracting to listen to hard rock renditions of whatever came across the radio during lunch time.
Holla, I'm done for the afternoon. Gaen said, knowing that his avatar had been waiting for him to 'get done with that boring crap' though Gaen wasn't sure why.
Fork'n finally! C'mon, let's get going, I wanna show you some stuff. Holla said with a decidedly cryptic tone. Gaen decided not to fight her on it, shuffling his forms together and filing them away before picking up his medical bag and heading down the halls. So far, Gaen didn't know how much he was enjoying having such a spirited avatar. He wondered if he could find somebody who may be able to help him get used to having a new resident in his skull. A few of his superiors had achieved shikai, though few enough of them were available to ask for advice.
Do you mind if we make a quick detour? Gaen asked, though it dawned on him that he was pretty much in charge of where they went, he controlled his feet after-all.
Fine, but it'd better not involve more paperwork! Holla said, and Gaen gave a silent nod to the condition as he turned and headed toward Hayato Takeda's office.

Hayato sat this day in his office in the hospital run by the fourth division, well office was a bit of a stretch in all reality. The area seemed more like a supply closet that they had converted into an office at the last moment. It was small and barely enough room for a desk, two chairs, and a filing cabinet. If there was any positive to it, it was that there was a window that looked out over the grounds from where he was. If it wasn’t for that window Hayato thought he might go crazy somedays stuck in the little room as he meticulously worked through paperwork from the day, approvals for medical requests, his own patients diagnosises and various other information that needed signed off.
Hayato couldn’t help but to think that this must be what it was like for some of the captains and their vice captains, most likely the vice captains, on a daily routine. Paperwork to the extreme, it got to be so boring. Hayato himself often pushed off the paperwork favoring more to go do clinical hours, helping out feeling like something what actually being accomplished. However, this was one of his responsibilities now and he could only push it off for so long, there were deadlines after all. God…this is so boring….
A voice would chime into his head, none other than his own spirit. She was not too keen on the paperwork as well. She was more apt for training, making sure Hayato’s skills didn’t get rusty, though secretly even more so she enjoyed battles and sparring.
Yes…I know, Yokubō o una~tsu. I’ve put all this off for far too long already though. If I wait any longer I’m sure to get in trouble.
Hayato let out a sigh as he signed his name on another document. Monotonous and never ending it seemed, even though the paperwork in front of him had a clear end, even if it was deeper than normal in the stacks.
Responsibilities…shouldn’t you be worried about saving lives? Protecting others? Stopping hollow? Not signing your name over and over again?
Yes. You’re right, but the hospital is slow today, the rest of the people have it covered. Unohana-senpai won’t be happy if I just up and don’t do this work without an excuse. You know that as well as I do.
Yeah…sure….tell me when you want to actually do something outside this cramped space.
She was certainly a fickle spirit, but she was there when he needed her most and that being said Hayato couldn’t complain or argue too much on her points. She was after all often times right in her assessments of situations.
It wasn’t a terribly long walk over to his superior’s office (something Gaen was also looking forward to getting someday) and he only had to put up with a minute or two of Holla’s griping about not doing anything she wants to do. Gaen didn’t really give her a lot of thought on that matter though, since a little over half of her suggestions involved stabbing a specific twelfth division member that Gaen had never actually met in person. He made it over to the little hole in the wall, and knocked quickly before opening the door and peaking inside. Generally speaking, fourth divison was pretty laid back and most offices had an open door policy. If somebody was too busy to help out, they just had to quickly wave the would-be visitor away and that was it.
I thought you said there wouldn’t be anymore paperwork. Holla teased, referencing the massive pile of paper stacked on Hayato’s desk.
Oh shush you. Gaen said, looking up as he spoke, then suddenly realizing he said that out loud. He let out a bit of a sigh, his little slip up reaffirming that he needed his superior’s help getting ‘adjusted’ with his new avatar. Um, Mr. Takeda sir, I was wondering if you could help me with a little issue I’ve been having. Gaen said, wincing slightly when Holla loudly objected to being called an ‘issue’. I’ve recently achieved shikai sir, and, uh, I’m having a hard time adjusting. I can come back later if your too busy of course. Gaen said, hoping that he’d be able to spare a moment or two to help him sort out how to deal with his avatar.

Hayato looked up from his paperwork as he felt the presence of someone enter into his office. It was a familiar face, one he had seen around the division quite a bit, especially when he needed supplies and in a hospital that was much more often than you would think. He was a shorter kid with nothing remarkably different that stood him apart from others, well other than the fact he only had one arm. A very distinct disadvantage when it came to being a shinigami, let alone a medic that needed to act quick, however despite those disadvantages it had seemed this young man, Gaen, was able to rise above it all and out preform some of the people, rather a lot of the people, who had no known disadvantages like himself.
“Hello Gaen. I think I’ve told you this before, but you don’t need to be so formal. Simply call me Hayato.” Hayato said with a smile and a slight laugh.
Hayato listened carefully as Gaen spoke, waiting patiently for him to finish his questions before he himself began to answer them to the best of his ability. His questions were quick and to the point and it was clear that despite Hayato’s mention of trying not to be so formal the boy was rather up tight and nervous speaking to his somewhat superior.
“Well first off of course, congratulations with making communication with your spirit to that level. However, when it comes to dealing with your spirit it can certainly be a little difficult. Getting use to the talking inside your mind is a little maddening at first. To be honest though you need to just cope with it.”
Hayato stretched his arms up over his head with a little chuckle.
“I know not the best advice at all, but over time it starts to get easier and easier. You just need to take it in strides. Everyone spirit is different after all.”
The advice wasn’t the best of the course and Hayato had more to say, but for now that was a nice preview to allow for Gaen to comment on for now, it would also help to open up the gateways to conversation.
Asking Gaen to be less formal to his superiors was like asking him to perform heart surgery with one hand tied behind his back. He didn't know why he was so uptight about it, in more or less every other situation he was pretty laid back. Maybe he should go to one of the Fourth division psychologists to try and loosen him up around higher ranks. Or he needed to get promoted and find out just how annoying it was to be called sir all the time, either or. For now, he just resolved to try and say 'sir' less often during his questions.
The actual advice he was given wasn't really what he was hoping for unfortunately. 'Get used to it' was a little less supportive than he was expecting, but he didn't know if there was any better advice out there. Shinigami had been realizing shikai for centuries, Gaen would have figured there would be at least a couple books on the subject of getting used to a voice in your head. However, as with many, many things in life, time seems to be the only cure, which was frustrating.
Do you have any other tips to help out sir-uh-Hayato...senpai? He asked, always having had trouble with Japanese honourifics. I mean, I'm certain your avatar is as kind and noble as yourself. He said, not really meaning to come off as complimentary, he really thought Hayato was a kind and noble man. His avatar was the persona of a massively powerful healing ability from what Gaen understood, so it made sense that the spirit in Hayato's head would be an ideal Fourth Division paragon. My avatar on the other hand is... difficult.
Oi! Holla shouted, having been mercifully quiet over their conversation so far.
Sorry, I'm just being honest. He said quietly, looking up as he spoke before returning his attention to Hayato. She's a very... strong personality. She's argumentative, aggressive and doesn't seem to have much regard for my work. She spent the last three hours singing some sort of screaming 'rock and roll' thing she heard on the radio while I was filling out supply usage reports. He said, at this point just being happy to have somebody to complain to and get it off his chest.

“I’m far from your teacher.” Hayato said with a smile. “Really just Hayato is fine, but if it is too much of a bother continue to speak how you feel most comfortable.”
“Now when it comes to my spirit as it were.” Hayato began calmly.
Watch what you say! Yokubō o una~tsu shouted in his mind. Hayato pushed it aside as he continued speaking.
“My spirit, Yokubō o una~tsu, is a bit how do I put it…focused? She’s more focused on my physical training than anything else. She wants me to be prepared for battle and feels although my mind is there that my body and skills in combat have not been up to par.” Lower than a little under par…
Hayato rolled his eyes to her speaking. It was true after all, she was a part of him, she was his spirit she knew his body just as well as he did himself. He had tried to improve himself physically but it never seemed there was time for that, nor did it cross his mind as often as it should. Truly in battle he was at quite the disadvantage and if it wasn’t for Yokubō o una~tsu specific skill set it would be even more so the case.
“So it’s hard to say what some good advice would be, Gaen. You see our spirits are a part of us, which you clearly know, they know us just as well as we do if not better. The issue of course though is, is that they are more than a bit stubborn, not caring what else is going on with us. They are often more concerned with the immediate issues and the need to address them post haste.”
Hayato paused as he looked around for a moment with a sigh, continuing his little speech and musing to Gaen.
“So the best thing I can do for you is to tell you to listen to them. They are often right, though not always the most considerate with the order of things. Talk to them and try and satisfy them in doing what they ask, sometimes after all they don’t give a reasoning, but their actions make the most sense. You need to get in tune with them and it might take quite some time, but eventually you’ll work well together once you find that balance.”
….Good…that was actually intelligent….
Hayato smiled, though on the inside he wanted to strangle Yokubō o una~tsu. Saying it like he never had a good thought. Sometimes she was so unintentionally mean.
Gaen let out a sigh when Hayato corrected him on his use of honorifics, letting him know that apparently 'senpai' meant teacher of some kind. This is why he preferred 'sir' or 'ma'am' for his superiors, it was simple and got the point across. Regardless, he found himself mostly surprised by what Hayato had said regarding his avatar.
You're avatar wants you ready to fight? Gaen asked, piquing an eyebrow at the thought, his idea of what Hayatos' avatar was like shattered in an instant.
Ha! I'm not the only avatar who's fighty! Holla called out in victory and glee, Gaen still reeling from the oddity of it. He had thought Hayato would have a serene avatar, something calming and nurturing, the very soul of healing. Gaen himself had honestly hoped for such an avatar himself, hoping that his avatar would be like the supposed spirit dwelling withing Hayato's blade. Ironically, Gaen ended up having an avatar similar to the one of his superior, but it wasn't anything like he had been looking forward to.
Listening to Hayato's explanation, Gaen couldn't help but draw some parallels between his avatar and the idea of Id, ego and super-ego. If Holla was so preoccupied and focused on the now, she could very well be a manifestation of his Id, his instinctual nature. Everything he wanted someday, she wanted now, where he was content to whisper, she shouted without care. Perhaps his sword was bringing out the part of his personality he most strongly neglected since Gaen usually subscibed mostly to the 'super-ego' ideal. He stuck very closely to societal laws, traditions and values, pushing his own baser, animalistic desires to the side. It would certainly explain a few things honestly, but he'd have to leave that theory for later since Holla seemed to be getting impatient.
Okay, cool, so your man-crush over there told you I'm always right, so lets get on the road. This was supposed to be a quick detour, not a hurt feelings symposium. Holla said, Gaen remembering that she had wanted to show him something after work.
But I wanted to talk to Hayato a bit more. He said, again realizing he had to get used to the idea of 'thinking' a response instead of talking out loud.
That's fine with me, bring string-bean along, I wouldn't mind having a word with him too. We're heading to the garden. Holla said, which for some reason made Gaen a bit nervous.
Um, Holla says she wants to show me something out in the garden, and to bring you along because she wants to talk to you? He said, very curious how Holla intended to speak to Hayato beyond just telling Gaen what to say. She could do that right here afterall. If that's alright with you of course sir. Gaen said, not knowing what sort of deadlines Hayato was being faced with.

“Yes. She’s rather insistent on it actually.” Hayato said calmly in response to Gaen’s rather intriguing question.
“I assume it’s because she finds that it’s my weakest suit, but for all I know she could have another motive she isn’t telling me.”
Shut your mouth. I don’t keep secretes.
Of course not.
Hayato rolled his eyes slightly as the voice inside his head spoke. She meant well he was sure of that, but at the same time and, her being a part of himself, there was no hiding that he felt she also knew more than he did. As though she knew what was to come for the medic before he himself could even fathom it. That however was in part, part of the job of the manifestation of one’s spirit, to guide their physical parts to victory, even if the methods seemed unorthodox at best.
Hayato’s eyes grew wider with a smirk as Gaen spoke, his words clearly were made for his spirit, though he had recently gotten them and hadn’t quite gotten the hand of speaking to her at all. It of course did take some time, Hayato himself recounted as to how he himself had difficulties with such a thing.
“She wants to talk to me? Interesting…” Hayato said pausing for a moment before speaking again.
“Well of course I don’t want to keep her waiting. She doesn’t really seem like the kind of girl who cares to wait. So whenever you are ready Gaen we can head out." Hayato said as he grabbed his Zanpakuto nearby placing it in the scabbard on his side prepared to head out to explore whatever it was his spirit had to show them.
She really isn't very patient at all. Gaen said, confirming Hayato's suspicions that Holla wasn't much one for waiting. While Gaen had only met Holla recently, it didn't take terribly long to learn that little tid-bit about her personality. He was also happy to hear that Hayato was willing to come along for the walk. Gaen wasn't particularly sure what his avatar would do if his superior had been too busy to take this little break.
Finally, c'mon, let's head out to the garden. Holla said, which Gaen could get behind. He really enjoyed the Fourth Division garden, it was lovely and well kept, a place for patients to meander and get some fresh air in a tranquil environment.
She wants to go out to the garden apparently. She's not telling me why though, which is surprisingly unlike her. Gaen reported to Hayato, noting again that he at least knew enough about his avatar to know when she wasn't being herself. The brash woman was always very up front with her desires and reasons, but this time around she was being much more enigmatic. Still, he walked out to the hallway and started heading out to the courtyard where the garden was. Hmm, I wonder if Holla wants me to work on my swordsmanship... He said, knowing his skill with a blade was by far his weakest aspect. Even in hand to hand, Gaen could hold his own fairly well, and while his kido wasn't very extensive, it was respectable.
What do I care how well you can swing me around when I'm a sharp metal stick? I'm more focused right now on getting you used to my greener side. Holla retorted, which was a little surprising, Gaen figured his avatar would want him up to par on all of his combat skills. Maybe she wasn't so bad, he really didn't like swordsmanship. I still consider you a sissy boy, and I fully intend on beating that out of you. First things first, you need to activate shikai. Over by that tree there. The big one. Holla said, putting to rest any idea that Gaen had of his avatar being even remotely pleasant. Still, he looked up and saw the garden at the end of the hall, a large pine tree not far off from the opening.
Alrighty, uh, I'll just go on faith on this one for now. Gaen said, drawing his sword and walking over to the large tree. He had been given special permission to activate his shikai within the Seireitei while Holla was being catalogued and documented, so he was okay with releasing from a rules standpoint. Still, he was hesitant, he had never released his shikai outside of a lab, and never while anybody was watching. So far, it had been a very private thing for him. Um, Mr. Hayato sir, uh, could I ask you to... look away for a moment? Gaen said, a little embarrassed that he had to ask. He could almost feel Holla sigh inside his head, she wasn't nearly as shy, but Gaen had his reasons. The main one was that he had to take off his upper robes to activate Holla, and that showed off his rather extensive scars. He shook his robes off his shoulder and held the flat of the short European sword against his stump, taking a quick breath. Grow, Holla. Gaen said, his sword vanishing from his grip, changing from wrought black iron into a flurry of green vines, wood and thorns. In a moment, he had a sturdy and strong looking right arm that seemed to dig into his body after enveloping his right shoulder.
Okay, now, touch the tree with me, and just wait out for a bit. Talk to string-bean or something. Also, this may feel weird, just go with it. Holla said, which was, again, enigmatic and disconcerting, but so far as he knew this wasn't going to hurt either of them. He hoped anyway. He put his green hand to the bark of the tree and turned to look at Hayato for a moment, giving a quick shrug as he did so.
Uh, she asked me to do this and wait for a bit... He reported, feeling a little sheepish since he still didn't know what was going on really.
