There was a saying. Act like you belong and people will treat you so. And while Liam did believe there was a small bit of truth to such a statement. He had no idea it would have been so easy. You'd think such a fancy looking cafe would have something resembling decent security wandering around their kitchen. But it was in fact a simple matter for Liam to wander in when no one was looking and throw on a spare uniform.
Of course his disguise was helped through a small application of Blut. Allowing him to bulk up his body a small bit in order to make his appearance seem slightly older. Helping him blend in with the experienced chefs as he moved from station to station, working on a number of rather fancy looking dishes.
He'd been there for nearly and hour now. So far his disguise was holding strong. His skill in the culinary arts and lack of complaints from the customers kept him from arousing any suspicion.
Why was he here you ask? Quite simple. Liam was completely and utterly bored. Aside from training, the Quincy Acolyte had no hobbies to speak of. He wasnt interested in sports and it was a pain for him to find books in English. So instead he turned to the one skill outside that of the martial kind he felt he could be proud of. His cooking skills.
"Order twelve up." He called out to a nearby waiter who promptly swept up his latest dish to serve to the next high-class customer who felt like paying for overpriced food. With a small sigh, Liam rinsed his hands in a nearby sink. Despite the fact that he was enjoying himself he knew that this little game of his could not last for much longer. He would probably be figured out in an hour or two. Best he just finish up one or two more dishes before slipping out the back door.
Esca was a fairly common individual within the fine dining establishment. She was a personal friend to the wife of the head chef. In by granting her access to some of the more exclusive fragrance lines, she was generally granted excellent service and feasted upon fabulous recipes on a semi-weekly basis. Taking her usual seat by the window up in a private area so she could dine without interruption, the woman ordered a simple dish and an iced mocha beverage as she peered out over the city.
The sun was beginning its descent as people hustled and bustled to make home after a long day at work. Of course, some people stopped by for their afterwork cocktail and enjoyment of happy hour. Such fun could ensue from the consumption of alcohol, but the woman was certainly pleased with her caffeine and milk mixture that she sipped from a cup. Of course, she couldn’t be classy unless her pinky was extended and not even a drop of liquid moved to stain her upper lip.
Once her food came out and she took her first bite, the bount blinked in surprise. Though she had had this dish dozens of times over the course of the last couple of months, the mixture of flavors and spices had somehow brought it to a whole new level. Had the chef changed his recipe? Had they hired a new sous chef? Whatever the case, she certainly would have to give the person quite a tip. After waving to get her waiters attention, she would send a little note and give it to the person who had constructed her dish.
On this said note was a personal invitation for the chef to come join her at her table so that she may personally compliment his craftsmanship.
After receiving and reading the note that the elegant Bount had sent him, Liam was presented with two choices. He could cut his losses and simply leave, slipping out through the back door. He could vanish without drawing attention to himself and not risk getting in trouble. While he was not sure what laws specifically he was breaking. He knew that him being in the kitchen was no doubt an insurance nightmare for the restaurant.
However his other option was far riskier, but the reward could also be rather appealing. Every patron he had seen so far had been the very picture of affluence. If he had actually managed to impress one of them to a suitible degree, the reward could certainly be interesting.
It would also amuse him to no end to admit he did not work in this restaurant and that their food had been prepared by some teenager who literally just came in from the street.
With a small sigh, Liam made up his mind. Ducking behind a corner in the kitchen, Liam released his Blut. His muscles groaned in relief as his body lost a few inches and kilograms. The body of someone who could be considered an active athlete in their mid twenties shrunk down into that of a lanky teenager.
With chef's uniform still on his body. Liam strode out of the kitchen, still moving with a sense of purpose, desperately trying to hide the butterflies in his stomach as he approached Esca's table.
Reaching the table, he stood opposite the CEO, hands clasped behind his back and a small smile on his face. He did not sit down. He had not been invited to do so, there was no reason to potentially dig himself into a hole.
"Good evening Miss." He greeted her with a respectable nod of his head. "I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your meal."
Esca had finished her meal in the time she awaited for the chef to come out to meet her. Though, when he approached, it certainly was not what she had expected. It forced her to arch a brow and release a curious “hm” as she looked up the other up and down. Rather than an adult, he was nothing but a boy who probably should have spent his time in school as opposed to working in a kitchen. Hell, was he capable of working? She honestly was not too familiar with the labor laws of this country. Tapping her nails on the table lightly, she would release yet another “hm” before offering him a seat directly across from her. “I must say, it certainly appears that the chef has taken on quite a young addition to his staff. I assume you are a recent addition to his team? Are you shadowing under him?” questioned the woman as she took a sip of her drink.
Truly, the elegant woman was certainly intrigued. Here was someone who was working in a four star restaurant who probably had more outbreaks of backne then he actually had hair on his chin. The world was certainly and interesting place that never ceased to amaze her. Pubescent boys being world class chefs? Oh how it had changed over the last century. “Well, whatever the case, I am quite pleased by your food. I have been here plenty of times over the last few months and I have to say this was the best I’ve had since I’ve moved to this country. But, where are my manners? I am Esca Renaldo. It is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance.” Releasing a soft smile, the woman would gradually extend her hand in a dainty handshake.
As Esca studied Liam, the young Quincy studied her in turn. Pale blond hair, attractive, delicate features and expensive clothing. This woman on front of him simply screamed wealth and elegance. But that was not what truly drew Liam's curiosity.
The fact that he could not sense her reitsu in any way was rather suspicious. Even normal humans had minuscule levels of spiritual power. But Esca had none. It was if a black spot simply appeared right there on his spiritual radar. The only time he had ever felt something like this was when he attempted to search for Kiku's reitsu.
So either this woman was a spiritually sensitive human who supremely skilled at hiding her own Reitsu. Or she was a Bount, just like Kiku. Of course that hardly meant anything. Only that the woman in front of him had probably lived among humans for a very long time.
Bringing his mind back to the present, Liam gave a slightly nervous chuckle. "Oh yes. I am his shadow. He probably doesn't even know I am there most of the time." Make that all the time. Liam had thankfully been both lucky and fast enough to avoid the sight of the head chef. While he may be able to bluff his way past the waiters and other chefs. The boss would certainly be much more difficult to fool.
Sitting down and taking the weight off his feet, Liam allowed himself to relax slightly in his chair. Only to perk right up as the woman praised his dish. A light blush appeared on his face. While he did take some pride in his culinary skills, this level of praise from someone who seemed to know her way around fancy restaurants.
"You are too kind Miss Renaldo. My name is Liam O'Brian and it is a pleasure to meet you." Liam answered back, taking the extended hand in his own and giving it a light shake. "But I worry that such high praise on my first day cooking here will give me a large head." So far this meeting seemed to be going well. So Liam decided to take a small risk and see how this woman would react to some light jokes. Perhaps if he could endear himself to her he could avoid some of the repercussions when he was inevitably discovered.
Esca knew that studying look. She had encountered it plenty of times amongst her years. It was the questioning look of why they could feel other people but suddenly not her. So, this boy was spiritually aware? That only made him all the more interesting to her. Aware humans certainly was a rarity. What was the figures? One in a thousand? Her lips merely turned into a soft smile. Oh how special this kid was. “So, his shadow, huh? I am a close friend of the owner’s wife. I would have heard on the grape vine of a new man working behind the scenes, especially if they were cooking. I’m quite the picky eater after all,” spoke the woman softly as crossed her legs, keeping both thighs pressed together to prevent any indecent exposure. What pose she had!
“My guess is that, despite your impressive skill, you actually don’t work here, do you? Am I right?” Honestly, the girl didn’t even wait for an answer before she continued. “So I am going to ask you this one question and one question alone: would you like to work for me instead?” Her azure eyes shined brightly as she stared directly into the younger male’s brown eyes. They almost even twinkled. “Since I’ve moved here, I haven’t quite found someone to prepare my food to my standards at home. Though I would need to try a few more of your dishes before you actually get the job, it is still I am offering to you.” Spoken just like a business woman, direct and too the point. It had all come down to whether the kid would be interested or not.
Well. It seems he was caught out. This woman in front of him saw right through his disguise without much effort on her part. So either she was rather perceptive or he simply overestimated the effectiveness of his disguise. With another blush, Liam face fell downward towards his knees. "Looks like you got me." He murmured, prepared to face the worst. He took the risk and apparently his luck ran out. But he supposed that was what he deserved. This little prank of his was stupid and risky. Far too risky for such minimal rewards.
The last thing he was expecting right now was the offer of a job. His head shot upwards out of its' slump as Esca made her offer. Work for her? Liam would be lying if he said the offer was not tempting. High pay and chances to work with high quality ingredients. Plus it helped that his potential employer was an attractive woman.
For a moment Liam was silent, mulling over his options. Weighing the pros and cons of each choice in his mind. While such a job would be quite the opportunity and would be a good thing to throw on his resume. The downside would be the lack of free time he could devote to other matters.
Finally making his decision, Liam once again addressed Esca. "I accept." He told her firmly, nodding as he reassured himself that this was probably the most beneficial choice for him. "Do you have an preferences before I get started on those samples?"
Truly, the woman was pleased that Liam had accepted her offer. Though the kid was young, this was perhaps a good thing for her. It allowed him to be shaped and crafted towards her ideal chef. Who knows, maybe he would be worth keeping until he eventually died of old age. She had done that a time or two in her extended life span. Most eventually just quite because of retirement or something. Tilting her head to the side, the woman eyed the other over up and down for a brief couple of moments before smiling once again. "Good. And as much as I would appreciate those samples now, I'm not quite fond of stealing this restaurant's food. You will be preparing them in my kitchen. Hopefully it will have everything that you need in order to create things for your interview."
Reaching into her purse, the woman would pull out a simple tube of lipstick and a compact. After reapplying the nude shade to her lips and checking to make sure the rest of her was flawless, she would graciously stand up after dropping a ¥10,000 note to cover her bill and tip before heading towards the door. There, she would wait and see whether or not the boy would even open it for her. How chivalrous was this child? Once they left, her car was already waiting for her. It, of course, was a piece of magnificence. It was Rolls-Royce that was a lovely white with a slight pink hue (but not overwhelmingly so). The driver kindly let her in where she quickly grabbed a bottle of champagne and poured them both a nice little "traveling drink" as she would call it. "So, besides your cooking skills, do you have any other talents that might perk my interest? I did notice you were struggling to sense my spiritual pressure, so I imagine you are at least somewhat spiritually capable?"
"Well then." Liam began, rising from his seat as his new potential employer did the same. "I will be sure to do my best to wow you as soon as I can. If you will excuse me for just a moment." Not immidiatly making his way to the door to join Esca, Liam made a quick dash back into the kitchen. Throwing off his uniform and quickly changing into his own clothes in a matter of moments.
He certainly did not use a small application of stepping in order to move around faster. That would be a horrific abuse of his powers.
Emerging from the kitchen a few moments later, Liam opened the door that Esca was waiting at. "Sorry to keep you waiting." He apologized, stepping to the side to allow her to exit. "Shall we keep going?"
He did have to admit, the Rolls was rather swanky. While Liam had never been poor, this level of affluence was far beyond anything he was used to. Taking the offered drink, Liam simply let it sit in his hand for now. He detested alcohol quite a great deal. But to outright deny the drink could seem a bit rude.
Taking a small sip of his drink, he didn't react as Esca commented on his attempt to sense her spiritual pressure. "Less attempting to sense, more simply confirming that you are in fact a Bount." He admitted, already hitting the nail on the head. "And I can assure you that I am more than just capable when it comes to the spiritual matters." He replied, holding up his hand and showing the immortal CEO his cross.
"I'm also rather good at cleaning, gardening and basic tailoring." He chirped, relaxing into the comfortable seat of the car and taking another sip of his drink.
“Well do call me impressed. I would have not imagined someone as young as yourself to have even a knowledge of my race. We truly are a rare breed after all,” spoke the woman with a smile as she raised a cheers before taking a sip of the alcoholic beverage. Though she knew that Liam was a spiritually gifted human, to find out he was a Quincy was quite fascinating. The two of them had something in common: they had nearly been eradicated by the shinigami race. They also had the capability of manipulating that ambient spiritual energy that existed around them. Truly, her decision to hire him was proving to be quite beneficial for them both. They could probably teach one another quite a fair bit.
Eventually, her driver would pull up onto her estate. It was a beautiful mansion that had a lovely overlooking view of Naruki City. The front of her property was filled with bountiful roses of every shade and color (besides the dreary black) that just put a lovely aroma into the air. After being assisted out of the vehicle, her glass still in her hand, the driver would leave to park the vehicle and leave them both to their lonesome. “Well this is my home and where you would be allowed to stay should you pass my tests. I’m sure you will find the servant’s quarters quite comfortable.”
Leading him inside, she would take him down the hall into the large kitchen. It was massive in size and comparable to a full size kitchen with all the fixings. “I would like you to prepare me two different meals and a desert. Take your time as there is no rush but at the same time do not take all day as I have matters I will need to attend to.” A quick check to her watch made her hm slightly as she spun on her heel to leave the kid to his work. “I will check back with you in an hour or so. Just don’t ruin or break anything.” And with that, she was gone.
Liam let out a low whistle as he saw the estate he was being driven up to. That was certainly a swanky place to live. And in a prime location to boot. Looking right out over the city, Liam sure got one hell of a view. Plus the pleasant scent of the multitude of roses was certainly a nice touch. Really helped add the the image of wealth that Esca gave off. "Nice place." He commented, clearly stating the obvious, but also possibly tickling Esca's ego to put her in a better mood. It always did feel nice to have people voice out what you already knew.
He raised an eyebrow when the servant quarters were mentioned. That was not something he was completely comfortable with. School would be something he would need to discuss with her. He could not simply up and abandon his education just because some rich vampire asked him No matter how well she paid or how nice her legs were. He'd need to work out some more flexible hours with her after he wow'd her with his mastery of the culinary arts.
He let out another whistle (is this going to be a regular thing?) as they reached the kitchen. It was certainly a great deal more impressive than his own station at home, that much was for sure. "Two dishes and a desert? I can handle that." Liam stated confidently, nodding as he did so.
As his potential employer left him to his own devices, Liam shrugged off his jacket, tossing it onto a nearby hanger. Standing there in his orange t-shirt and baggy jeans. The young Quincy grinned at the diverse stockpile of ingredients in front of him, cracking his knuckles as he did so.
The woman smile at the compliment to her home. It was quite stunning she had to say so herself. Well, that was all in part to the fact that she was the one who drew up the plans and had it built to her specific expectations. It had plenty of rooms to explore and maybe, one of these days, Liam would be granted an opportunity to do so. But, for right now, his time was to be spent in the kitchen. Giving him her brief goodbyes, Esca would head down the other end of the hallway to go into her study. Not only was it typical in that it was filled with large bookshelves that had novels and research material in virtually every main language, but it had a large oak desk with a large computer in which she had to do her work on. She did her best to work from home as much as she could. It allowed her to keep her anonymity after all.
After making a few business calls to make sure her inventory was up to scale and that her shipments would be shipped before deadline, the woman was truly glad that nearly an hour had passed. She had only hoped that the boy would have been finished by now. Because honestly, she was a tad hungry. As she returned to the kitchen, her normal boots had been replaced with a simple pair of fuzzy bunny house slippers. They may have been cheap, but lord were they comfortable. "So, I imagine you've finished with your meals?" she questioned as she looked about to examine his craftsmanship. She could at least say this, it at least smelled good.
Pans clattered, gas hissed and hands never stood still as Liam busied himself in Esca's kitchen. On the drive up his mind was already working to pick out the most appropriate dishes he knew in order to come up with the best ones for his new owner employer.
If two dishes and a desert were needed, then it would only feel natural that he make dishes that felt elegant and classy. And a pair of the classiest dishes he knew that could be prepared in an hour both happened to be seafood. Coupled with a small mousse for desert should be sufficient.
As Esca entered the kitchen just as he was finishing up, Liam craned his neck back to look at her. And while he didnt smile or laugh. The Bount would probably see his eyes and mouth twitch as he suppressed a smile at the sight of her slippers. It was actually rather cute. A small mental image that Liam would save, if only to tease her with it later.
"Great timing Miss. I just finished up." He chirped back, drying his hands as he gestured to three dishes that lay prepared on a nearby table. It seems that Liam had anticipated her arrival and had the table set up to accommodate her. With cutlery and a drink prepared for her.
Pulling out the seat, Liam gestured for the elegant Bount to sit down and test his creations for herself. "I have three lovely little dishes prepared for you right now. I do so hope you enjoy them." Positioning himself at the other end of the table, Liam lifted the lid off the first dish. Revealing a small fillet of what looked like Halibut. " A modest enough dish, just some baked Halibut with a few herbs such as Dill, Chives and Parsley." Moving his arm to the side, he lifted the second cover. "This one I am quite the fan of. Shrimp with Saffron, Gnocchi and Caramelized Onion. It nearly melts in your mouth with how good it is."
Hoping that he had made a good impression with his main dishes, Liam moved onto the third and final dish. A slightly cheeky smile spreading across his face. "And for the last dish, and my own personal favorite." After all, who didn't like desert? "White Chocolate Mousse with Raspberry."
With each dish introduced, Liam then stepped back. Letting Esca take her time when it came to sampling each dish and hearing what she had to say.
Esca was greatly pleased to hear that the meal was finished and only need the final touches. Clapping her hands quickly in excitement, the woman graciously nodded her head in thanks at the pulling out of her chair before sitting down within it. Just as she had asked, there were two main meals and a simple desert. All in which looked quite appetizing. Though, she had to admit, it could have used a bit better plating. She could work with that, for now anyway. Picking up her utensils that were coated in a fine sheet of gold that would not directly influence the food’s taste in any way, she would start with the first one.
It was a halibut dish smothered with proper use of herbs and served overtop of wild rice. Slicing off a piece of the tender fish, she would give it a brief sniff before taking her first bite. Immediately flavor would rush through her taste buds. Truly, it was quite impressive. She personally loved the outer crust that gave a slight crunch to balance out the otherwise tenderness of the fish. “Well, you receive a gold star on this one. I recommend putting the rice in a small bowl before placing it on the plate upside down just to give it a more uniformed shape. But that is me being picky,” she said as she slide that plate forward only to replace it with the shrimp dish.
As shrimp was one of her favorites, the woman was certainly going to be a bit more picky about it. Instantly, she frowned to not see it butterflied and to have their tail still on them. Truly, it made her a tad hesitant to even eat it. Still, her knife quickly chopped the tails off before she plopped the crustacean into her mouth. The flavor was good, but she wasn’t quite sure if the work to eat it was honestly worth the effort. “I’m not as pleased with this one I’m afraid,” she said as she slid it forward. “Cut them down the center to allow them to cook more evenly, chop off the tail since you really don’t need to eat them. While I didn’t check, might as well take out the intestines. It’ll improve flavor tremendously.”
Raising a napkin to cleanse her lips, she stared down at the last desert. It was a mousse. Honestly, she wasn’t quite sure how you could mess that one up. Using a fork to take off the top raspberry to sample it first, she hummed pleasantly. It was her favorite berry after all. Truly a good choice. While white chocolate wasn’t her favorite, the two flavors complimented one another tremendously. She ended up eating a good half of the meal before setting it aside.
“Well, we have to work on some of your technique, but you are hired.”
"Right. Leaving the tails was an old habit of mine. Sorry." Liam answered back, scribbling down her comments on a notepad that seemingly appeared from nowhere. If he was going to work for this woman, he would need to know each and every one of her preferences when it came to meals. "But soon enough, I'll have your preferences down. All I ask for is a bit of patience and I will amaze you in return."
He had to admit, Esca was not the worst kind of potential employer. One would think that a woman of her affluence would be stuck up and rude to those she felt were beneath her station. And while she did seem to be a bit haughty. She was nowhere near as bad as she could have been. Instead of ratting him out the owner, she offered Liam a high-paying job, even offering him a place to stay if he needed it. She did not turn her nose up at his meals or insult him for his mistake. Instead offering constructive criticism and advice.
Yes, there certainly could have been worse people to catch the attention of. That much was certain.
As Esca told him that he was hired, a smile unlike any other she had seen off him lit up his face. It was such a genuine thing, full of pride and unbridled happiness. "Thank you very much Ma'am. I promise, you will not regret this decision." The utter certainty in his voice certainly did a good job of conveying just how happy he was about his new employment. He would finally get a chance to use his talents in a constructive manner. Saving people from random Hollow attacks was nice enough, but this was something far more enjoyable and relaxing.
Plus he got paid for it. That certainly helped.
"Now then, we will need to discuss what exactly my duties are and when precisely you want you meals, wont we."
The woman was pleased by the fact that Liam not only was listening to her critique but was actually jotting down notes for reference later. That in itself proved that she had made the correct decision in that regard. He was a young boy that was quite ready to learn. She would train him right in a fairly short time frame if he kept such an attitude in mind. Truly, she was pleased with her selection. It looked like perhaps that little café lost a potential hard worker. She was a business woman after all. Sometimes you just had to take them off the market before they became competition. She had done that in the past with transactions. People, in many ways, were similar in that regard. Especially when you were as old as she was.
"That we do. I am not much of a morning person so I don't expect a meal when I first wake up, but I do quite enjoy something caffeinated such as tea or coffee. Preferably hot. Breakfast I expect to be served around a traditional brunch time with lunch being around two or three and dinner around six or seven. As for duties, your responsibility is the cleaning and maintaining stock of food. It should be stocked with everything you need at all times. You'll be given an 'allowance' for the lack of a better word for the purchasing of these items. Abuse of this money for things outside of supplies for this job will result in instant termination. I keep a close eye on my money and will know when it is spent incorrectly."
Her tone had certainly shifted into a more stern, authoritative flow. She was certainly not one that you wanted on her bad side. "I also would like you to keep the house tidy and to accompany me on any business trips that I might take. Eating out is questionable these days, and I certainly do not want to consume the food of anything prepared by some snot nosed teenager. No offense to you of course."
Oh thank goodness, she wasn't a morning person. That certainly made things much easier for him. He could get up, warp over and get things ready for the day. For simple things such as brunch it would be easy enough for him to get things done in-between classes or during his lunch. Then get the rest of his work done after school. It would be certainly difficult. But Liam was confident in his time management skills. The pay would certainly be worth it. Plus he would even be allowed to go with her on trips.
Getting to travel and stay in swanky hotels and all he would have to do in return is do some cooking and cleaning. It certainly seemed like a great deal to him. That wasn't even considering the wages and the chance to do some experimentation with some dishes. Esca probably wouldn't mind being a test subject for some dishes.
Probably not.
....Hopefully not.
"Meals, stock aaaannnnd cleaning." He repeated, scribbling down his duties n the same notepad he took her earlier criticism on. Respecting the allowance she gave him was not even worth noting. He already appreciated the offer she was giving him. She had been nothing but fair to him. There was no reason for him to abuse her trust like that. It would be an insult to both her and his own personal honor to do so.
He was a gentleman after all. Stealing from a lady would be rather uncouth of him.
"Right. Now onto other things I would probably need to know." He continued, flashing Esca a brief smile. "Just things like food preferences, allergies, guilty pleasures and whatnot." A small frown crossed his face as he considered something. "Would an immortal even have allergies?" He asked, mostly to himself but loud enough for Esca to hear.
