~Living in the shadows makes the light within us brighter.~
I was an old quincy proverb. One from a time long before its meaning had proven so poignant for those who still bore the name. Jugram Haschwalth could remember those days; memories still crisp, as though he had lived them only yesterday. Before the true quincy had found themselves hidden away here, in a world painted with shadows, the old saying was meant to quiet those headstrong youths who would question the secretive life of the quincy. Hidden away as they were, from shinigami and hollow alike, fighting only when necessary, avoiding detection at all cost. It was not an easy life, and many who had awakened their powers questioned why they must live it. Why not strike out against their foes, to show them the might of the quincy who would hide no more. Children were easily quieted, hushed by their elders who understood the ways of the world. But what happened when such unruly attitudes emanated from those with actual power?
Haschwalth’s steps echoed softly down the long corridor as he proceeded, still deep in thought over the exchange that awaited him. His Majesty was not a patient man when it came to being disturbed without reason, and appearing without summons? The quincy grandmaster doubted anyone else could commit such action and be spared grievous bodily harm. But this matter was pressing, and Haschwalth’s loyalty was stronger than any fear of penance.
Near its end the hallway expanded, both in width and height, to make room for a massive set of white doors, completely void of any decoration. Haschwalth halted before them and, after a moment, they slowly and noiselessly opened outward, revealing the stairs that led to the Emperor’s private chambers.
The ascent felt like an eternity, and when he finally reached the top Haschwalth knelt, proceeded no further into the den of his master.
“Forgiveness for the intrusion your majesty. But I require guidance on an matter or importance.”
