Zanjutsu practice was not something difficult to do, but not something for things like dummies. At a certain point, you'd just be far too incompetent if you couldn't slice a dummy in half.
Yet, this girl who had enough skills to perfectly split the goza target in front of her in her sleep stood there with concentration.
Using one technique to build another. Through this methodology and steps of continuous improvement, she had made many techniques and even a fighting style.
Today, she was doing the same thing again.
燕返し(Tsubame Gaeshi) is a technique that allowed one to freely alter the 刃筋(hasuji) and 太刀筋(tachisuji), or the angle of the blade and the angle of the swing respectively. Doing this, Ichika was able to alter her slashes to hit anyone who thought of trying to evade her sword by a hair's breadth. However, once an opponent decided to attack the blade itself, it would create an opportunity for them.
Therefore, she needed a method to overlap attacks. With that thinking, she developed the Dimension Slash. That raised a question, though:
What if she wanted to do it physically?
In front of her was a single goza target.
Drawing her sword, she swung once, splitting the target from top to bottom. Yet, before her sword reached the end of the goza or even touched the post it stood on, she activated the Tsubame Gaeshi, turning her blade and swinging angle by 90 degrees.
The result was a perfect L-shaped cut. How the blade turned without extra room was a sign that Ichika was a true master of the blade.
This wasn't enough, being a rudimentary result at best. She wanted to somehow strike it from top to bottom and from the side to create an L-shape at the meeting point of the strokes.
How would she do that?
Thanks to concentrating on this question, she did not notice that someone quite familiar had been nearby, or even watching her.
{Techniques} Name: 燕返し (tsubame gaeshi) Swallow Return Class: Zanjutsu Tier: II Type: Offensive Range: Sword Description: A technique that allows a shift in the direction of a large amount of (the user's) momentum. This allows the user to execute a follow-up swing coming from the opposite direction, be able to place the entire body's strength behind it with ease and still be accelerating. It can also completely change the direction of the sword mid-swing. Because it is difficult to force the entire body to change direction while keeping momentum, the user's own spiritual pressure is reversed to pressure one's own body to steer with a directed flow. Drawback: Despite only being a tier II technique, it is physically taxing when repeatedly used. Can be used a maximum of three times consecutively with a one post cooldown.

"Nicely done."
A voice from well behind the young female soul reaper spoke in a rough voice. The voice belonged to none other than her captain; Sajin Komamura. He had been watching her practice her swordplay for more than quite a few moments and it made him smile to think how well she could perform, while at the same being one of the most modest people he had ever met within the Seireitei. He was still a little taken off guard from the fact that she had obtained her Bankai, which had sparked an even further interest to find out exactly what she was capable of. Because without a doubt he knew that he had not seen much of her potential, just barely scratched the surface.
"Quite the impressive display of agility you showed there. I'm quite glad you transfered here to the Seventh Division. You never cease to impress me or the others."
He stepped closer to Ichika, and as he talked he examined the Goza target, noting the skill that he had been able to see being displayed. That mixed in with the brief moment they fought those odd creatures had displayed to him that his young subordinate was far more skilled in battle, and was exceedingly more strong than she made herself out to be. Which was fine, there was no wrong in being modest with oneself. It far outweighed the actions portrayed by those who flaunted their power at every chance they got.
Some incongruent cry escaped Ichika's lips the moment she heard the voice. It was something instantly recognizable to her, considering it belonged to a rather important person: None other than her current superior, the Captain of the Seventh Division. She had not noticed his approach at all, though strictly speaking he was still quite a bit of distance behind her. It could easily be chalked up to paranoia.
Turning around, she sheathed her sword and bowed courteously.
"Good morning, Komamura-Taichō."
Hearing his praise, she kept her eyes and body turned towards him. It had been a while since she had revealed her Bankai (or her release for that matter) to the Captain out of necessity. Quickly, she peered down at her waist to double-check.
She had properly hidden her Zanpakutō's second blade in her uniform. Good. As Komamura continued examining the target, she began to explain:
"That was only a basic technique I developed in my earliest years of Zanjutsu. Because I'm not of adult height, when I sparred against others, they would have a tendency to backstep and avoid the reach of my blade thanks to my arm's length. Therefore, the first technique I developed was to allow myself to redirect the momentum of my blade, allowing me to take another step and catch them when they think I've made an opening."
This was how she came up with the Tsubame Gaeshi. However, she didn't explain how exactly she did it, since she felt it was a low-level technique not worthy of much attention. The Jigenzan (Dimension Slash) she came up with was much more impressive in comparison, but Ichika was not the kind of person to show off. No, even now she suppressed as much of her spiritual pressure as she could: a routine practice by now, though Ichika knew that Komamura had seen her full power even for a moment.
Speaking of her Captain's presence, a question was raised in Ichika's mind, which she promptly spoke out:
"So, what brings Komamura-Taichō here today? I was under the impression most of the Taichō train in secret."
Though, anyone was to train themselves publicly, it would probably be Komamura.

As she explained her thought process on why she was doing what she was, Komamura looked at his own hand briefly and smiled. HE had never had the trouble of not being able to swing his sword while falling short of the distance it needed to hit a target. A half smile grew on his face as he put his hand down and answered her inquiry.
"Most do, however I was not here with the intent on training, just to see what everyone else was up to since I have some free time. Not to mention we captains train in secret mainly because if everyone knew our secrets and how to combat them, we would not hold our places long."
The latter of his words held a deeper and darker meaning, as there were many within the Soul Society who held a high grade of hate for he and his comrades. But hey, it was a better reason to keep on top of their game right?
"Not to mention with any intensive training relating to our blades; we would tear up a lot of the area around us. Which would get us into a lot of trouble."
He laughed as he turned his gaze back to the bisected targets. Out of all of his subordinates, this girl before him has intrigued him the most. IT was probably the whole outer-appearance-didnt-mean-shit idea on who a person was or what they were capable of. Which the large and scary looking captain could relate to very well. Although in Ichika's case, it was kind of reversed. Tilting his head he got an idea that hit him pretty suddenly.
"Would you be willing to teach me this ability, and train a bit with me. Ive been hearing around the place that this dog could use a little walking haha?"
Well, what he said made sense. After seeing what his Shikai and Bankai were capable of, she also had a few ideas of how to fight it, though she only started thinking of it now that he actually mentioned it. Also, she had her own Bankai, which was very destructive and would probably get her into as much trouble as her Captain.
Ichika was definitely not expecting a request to teach him that technique, though. Well, if he wanted it, she would comply. Komamura Sajin was the kind of person who was gentle enough to allow you to refuse him, but it just wasn't a good idea to do so in general.
"If that is what you wish, I'll be in your care." She said as she made another bow.
Then, turning to the target, she explained:
"Everyone knows that spiritual pressure can be felt by all of us and we can also control our own. As a form of "pressure", everyone has a reaction to it. Generally, because the opponent possesses their own, it's not possible to try to subtly change an opponent's movement by trying to shape pressure over an area and leaving a gap in the desired path to steer them, because either this takes too much pressure to not be subtle, or because it's too little and will be rendered null by the opponent's natural spiritual pressure.
However, this doesn't mean it doesn't work on trying to control yourself. By swinging and defining the desired path with your mind and spiritual pressure, it becomes possible to give yourself a desired trajectory of a sword swing that can be changed at any time and still followed through. The side effects are then allowing you to put all your strength behind the sword without care for overshooting the target, because the body is now essentially controlled perfectly by your mind and spiritual pressure. The downside is that doing this successively in short span is highly taxing on the physical muscles."
Approaching the target with the L-shaped cut in it, she drew the sword and cut a triangular piece out of the other side without nearing the middle and slicing off the top, leaving a minute portion just enough to keep the top from flopping to one side.
"I call this the Tsubame Gaeshi." She said while sheathing the blade.

Another smile fell on his face as his subordinate showed a rather specific sense of formal presence whenever she responded to him. It was refreshing, as with her it did not seem liek the same forced additude that he and his fellow captains where given by the majority of their squad mates. With a wave of his hand he beckonded her to begin, as he took a few steps back to allow for any sort of instruction or demonstration on her part. Which she did flawlessly.
"Swallows return?" He spoke thoughtfully. Was it named such due to her small stature? Would his be named after a larger winged beast, such as a roc or a dragon? He let those thoughts quickly fall out of his head as he listed to her intently.
After a few moments of letting her instructions seep into his head he stepped forward. "May I?" He asked before removing his zanpakuto and taking his place in front of one of the targets. With a few practice swings at slow speed he waved his blade around with a grace that not many would think that he had before he would replicate the sword attack with ease.
"I can see what you mean by the fatigue it places on your body." He replied with a breathy laugh as he mock rolled his shoulder in an attempt to be modest. "I'm more of a cut and dry fighter however, just hit them with everything you got as you saw before when those creatures appeared."

She heard her Captain question the name Swallow Return. There were a million ways she could have explained it: the most prominent that came to mind was the Tameshigiri (Testing Cut) pattern named the same way, which consisted of alternating between diagonal and horizontal cuts to make two connected Z patterns. The second most prominent is to liken it to a bird: For example, how a bird in the distance has a tendency to be drawn as two diagonal lines or curves that meet, or how a bird changes it's flight path. At this point, she honestly could not remember why she named it as such.
Well, it is what it is. Stepping aside, she gave the Captain room to practice, and he learned quickly. It was a low level technique, what did she expect? Listening to his comments, she gave her thoughts.
"Well, I don't find fault in such a method. There isn't any reason to hold back on a dangerous opponent. However, hitting them with everything sort of has this pre-requisite of actually, you know, hitting them, which is kind of why I made this technique, though I later found alternatives, they're massively complex... And, apparently, not very effective on those creatures, since I tried my best one on it and it just put itself back together despite slashing it to nothingness."
Ichika could only sigh. She's probably going to need stronger methods... But what could be stronger than Dimension Slash: Absolute? Her Bankai wasn't complete, but... suppose if that was her only chance?

"No, no you are right. And I have found myself many times not hitting anything. I fight through pure will, no so much with my skill as a fighter. And those beings we fought, looking back at them you did far better than I did against it. And it was no fault of your own that it came back, as their were reports from all of the others sightings that they did the exact same thing. It must be in their nature."
He smiled and turned to Ichika, sheathing his zanpakuto at his side in the process.
"Just know that you are among a very select few who I would have no problems fighting against anything. You have come a long way, and that is saying a lot especially since I believe I have never seen you at your true potentials limit."
He fell into deep thought for a moment before speaking up again about intentions he had been thinking over for quite a bit.
"There will be a lot of paperwork to fill out, but if you will have it I would like you to become my third in command. You'd answer only to me and your Lieutenant in times of need, so it will be a lot of work. But I trust in you enough that I am sure you will do exceptional at it."
Yes, Ichika was more or less due for a promotion from the twentieth seat, now that she had shown Komamura a good portion of her power. Still, there wasn't much that could prepare her for jumping all the way to the third seat. She remembered the promise she made with him back when she had first transferred in as the twentieth seat.
"Yes, I understand that I promised you to climb up the status ladder when I first transferred in. However, I do not believe that I am qualified for the Third Seat. For one, my Bankai is not developed far enough for serious combat usage. I only released it because it was my only other option at the time."
Even now, she had kept her second blade and her release hidden away in her clothing; a secret only to be unleashed for matters regarding life and death. Honestly? She did not want more responsibilities.
Military ranks were stupid things. Shinigami of the Seireitei raise their martial prowess and instead of being deployed to fights more, they are instead piled on with paperwork the stronger they are. Ichika knew how much paperwork the Captain and Vice-captains were swarmed with: Hell, she's delivered them on occaision. Yet, none of this was Ichika's real concern.
The reason why she concealed her release. The reason why she kept herself at a low rank was because of the rarity of having dual Zanpakuto and the two most well-known Captains that shared the same trait. Ukitake Juushiro and Kyouraku Shunsui. These two were also two of the strongest captains.
Ichika who did not have sufficient strength did not want to be associated with people of that caliber without reaching that level herself.
"In my opinion, I am still severely lacking in power to be called Third. That said, I will not refuse any promotions to a lower Seat."
Komamura was a Captain who valued his subordinate's opinions as highly as his own. Therefore, it was much easier to bargain with him concerning a majority of matters. Ichika could only hope this was one of them.

Ichika was turning out to be a very interesting person indeed. This was not the first time she had talked down her own strength, and even though she said her Bankai was not yet developed as much as it should have been, that day she released it in front of him could have been the thing that saved his life. His brow furled for a moment, giving off the impression that he may have been getting angry, however before anyone could react, it melted into a smile.
"Very well then. I will look through the lists and see where you can go for now. If you do not truly think you are ready for the kind of promotion, I would not tell you otherwise. However ..." He said shifting his weight as he placed his hand on his zanpakuto. "In terms of you not being strong enough for the position, I think you are further in development than you give yourself credit for. But I won't press the matter anymore for the time being. Instead I want to put you in charge of helping out our Substitute Shinigami representative along in his training. This is a task I myself will be participating in at some point soon as well."
