Sometimes, life had a weird way of working out. Tonight was one of those nights where Ryosuke had managed to not only do enough fighting to pay the rent for the next month and a half, but he had also earned a bit more of the prestige that came along with it. The last thing he wanted to do was get popular of course, but sometimes it felt nice to be the top dog for a change. Looking down at his gloved hand, he smirked a tad, before he felt a strange stirring beneath his right foot. That's right... He came to the river to reflect, and his peace was interrupted in a pretty serious way. Raising his leg a little, he stomped down on the squirming beneath his heel, a loud, guttural grunt from a most inhuman looking creature following suit.
"I haven't finished with you, asshole. You caused me quite a bit of trouble you know."
He grumbled, staring down at yet another of those odd looking creatures with holes in their chests, and masks on their faces. He had seen them long before now of course, but something about them was as irritating as it was intimidating. Some of them were pretty grotesque, but despite their strange nature, and the kind of damage they could do, normal people didn't seem to be able to see, or even interact with them. Thanks to that of course, they often provided quite the target practice for his frustrations.... Though after he ended up in the hospital, with some wounds that were hard to explain away, he dialed back on that bigtime. It seemed they were attracted to people with powerful spirits or something. Honestly what he had managed to beat out of the last one made little sense to him, but he felt like he knew all he needed to. Some people had power, and these things were drawm to powerful spirits. They ate them, in other words.
"So you planned on making me dinner after stalking me halfway across the town... And after I was tired to boot? Well you get an A for effort I guess. I don't even know what the hell to call you weird things..."
His voice was a grumble, but even as he felt that moment of irritation pass, he raised his leg once more. This time, his body took on a soft glow, cracking with energy. Slamming his foot down again, a crater appeared beneath the creatures head, easily the size of an engine as its mask shattered, and its body began to evaporate into black mist before his eyes.
A long walk home followed by a long day of work was the prime opportunity for some deep thinking. He had spent the latter part of his day stuck in a laboratory doing extensive research on the ever complicated Higgs boson particle. Because physicists were essentially trying to discover something that had a strong possibility of not existing at all, much of the day was spent going back to square one and attempting to redefine the presence of this elusive particle. It was long, tiring, and tedious, but for Sebastian, it was sort of a different story for him. Since he was a spiritually potent being, he took this as an opportunity to figure out just how to bridge the gap between spirit and science.
"If it's... Possible that this particle permeates... The entire universe... Imagine applying that... To the spiritual realm..."
Of course his exhaustion caused his thought process to slow down more. He was clearly in need for some rest before the following work day. It took a while for him to actually make one coherent thought, so Sebastian found it more reasonable to stop thinking before he started sleepwalking. The night was nigh, and to his left laid the popular river. The moon kissed the water ever so lightly, leaving a lip stain reflection that extended the entire length of the river. Sebastian remembered spending many days sleeping on the grass adjacent to the river, and then getting in trouble by his parents for acting like a delinquent. Typical coming-of-age behavior.
Undoing his tie while walking, Sebastian caught a quick yawn, only for something to instantly catch his attention. He stopped suddenly, mouth still halfway open. His hazel eyes caught the glimpse of the moon as they darted back and forth trying to figure out what exactly caught his attention. He eventually made a full body turn to the left and saw a inhumane, grotesque creature in the distance.
"At this time of the night. Really?" Sebastian uttered to himself. He remembered the countless times he was harassed by these monsters at every corner. It was once frightening since they resembled the stuff of nightmares but now... It's more of a nuisance, like the itch on the part of your back your arms can't reach.
Though Sebastian was ready to engage, immediately after catching wind of the creature's presence, another spiritually potent being was right near it, and with almost no effort, crushed the monster under his foot. The man looked like something out of the action role playing video games Sebastian used to play -- the dark clothes, the trench coat, the fingerless gloves. The man looked like he clearly knew what he was doing, and wanted everyone to know it, too.
Eventually, from the black mist that dissipated from the creature that was just killed, another creature emerged from the man's left. Much taller this time, and with a more imposing figure. No shame in intervening this time. Sebastian swung his arm over his back, and slammed his hand on his physics textbook inside his backpack. White reishi particles surrounded his presence like pedals dancing in the wind on a spring day. A broadsword formed of reishi gathered in the scientist's hand.
Darting forward, Sebastian's body emanated with a hard white outline of reishi. Jumping forward, Sebastian delivered a heavy downward slash, bifurcating the creature.
"These thing really do work twenty-four-seven, don't they."

While Ryosuke was no real stranger to his rest being interrupted, this was just getting obscene. Another one, in record time too... It was an interesting development, he had to admit. Even as he was about to teach it a very valuable lesson however, someone else beat him to the punch. He had felt the presence when he revealed his weapon, but instead of intervening, he left it in the apparently capable hands of the new arrival, even as he quite nearly bisected the creature down the middle. Raising his hands a bit, he clapped several times, smiling lightly.
"And ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. Nice edgework there. Most people can't cleave through those masks of theirs so easily."
By most people of course, it was his limited encounters with the kimono wearing guys with the Katana. He had seen them a few times, and most of them couldn't manage to pierce the masks. Ryosuke had even saved one of them once, mostly because she was, or at least looked, like a kid... Either they trained them young, or there was more to their story than he had access to. Turning to face the new arrival, he placed his hands in his pockets, rolling his shoulders back and letting his head rest to one side, observing. Looked half dead now that he took a look at him.... Kinda like ryosuke. Did anyone sleep in this city anymore?
"Not usually too many people out wandering the streets at night. What with all the weird happenings in this town and all, a lot of people tend to keep indoors after hours. Though I guess for people like us, that's a whole new reason isn't it."
A statement more than a question, he continued to watch the new arrival for a time, not quite comfortable enough to get too friendly with someone who chopped first and asked questions later, but hey, he couldn't rightly blame him either, given the monstrous appearance of these things, which seemed more than happy to try and feast on their souls.
Sebastian's reishi blade disintegrated from his hand as the black mist dissipated upon the death of the creature. It left behind a foul stench, causing the scientist to wave his hand in front of his face and let out some mild coughs. He turned around, taking only but a few seconds to get a good look at the male before him without looking too creepy. Yep. He definitely did look like someone from an action RPG. For a second, Sebastian thought he had already fallen asleep and this was all some intricate, extensive dream, 'cause this was almost too surreal to believe.
"Thanks. I'm not that really good at swordplay. That was just a wild slash. If I wasn't lucky, I definitely would've been impaled." Sebastian let out the slightest chuckle. This man before him had an incredible spiritual presence, dwarfing his own. He was definitely a combat veteran or the like. He definitely looked way different than those old school dojo samurai-looking warriors that emerged from portals, performed some kind of purification ritual or outright killing the creatures, and returning back from whatever realm they came from.
The man looked very laid back, as if he completely forgot there was a one-two scuffle with some inhumane beasts. A stark contrast from the other warriors who slayed these monsters. There was nothing but chatter about what to do with the corpse or having to return to some other mission. The man dropped his head to the side, as if he wanted to get back to whatever he was doing.
"Whatever the hell these creatures are, they've been a pain in my ass since I was a child." Sebastian used his Soul Communication ability to levitate the dust that stained his shirt from his assault off his body, mentally tossing it to side and delivering one final pat on his forearm to ensure its cleanliness. "It's unsettling knowing that there's more of them out there, but it's reassuring knowing that there's people like us here as well, just so those people who are forced in their homes when it gets dark can be comfortable."
Now, Sebastian's statement was an assumption that this person was a good guy based on how he took down the creature. Though, people also had their own intentions, and would take out anything that impeded their progress. Either way, it wouldn't hurt to try.
"Sebastian." The scientist introduced himself with a sort of reassuring nod to the man before him, hoping to break the ice.

Ryosuke looked on for a time as the man cleaned himself off, simply stuffing his hands into his pockets for now. Ryosuke was not much in a rush really... After all he had come out here to simply enjoy the evening, when he was unceremoniously interrupted by something that wanted to snack on him. It took a few minutes for him to snap back to reality, before offering the newcomer a bit of a smile.
"Ryosuke. Nice to meet ya. I'm a local, so I can't say I am all too surprised that these things still stick around."
He had been around for a good many years. When he had become spiritually attuned let's say, things had gone from bad to worse, but strangely enough, more fun too. It was good to have an out for your frustrations, and these things provided the perfect punching bag. They made a satisfying crunch when you hit em, they were loud, and the best part, barely a handful of people knew they even existed, and even less could see or interact with them. It was all gravy on his end.
"I wouldn't go so far as to say I try and protect people from these things... From what I've seen they can only interact with people like us, who can see and interact with them. Though I do my part to keep them away from my general vicinity... Bad business to keep these things around, they might get comfy on their own. Plus..."
Ryosuke was about to mention the spirit of the young boy he had encountered a few weeks back. He had the unfortunate curse of having watched his soul be devoured, then subsequently having to put him down... It was painful, he had to admit. He normally didn't feel much for strangers, but it was a kid... alive or dead, he was a scared little kid who could only keep asking where his mommy was. He still had nightmares.
"Forget I said anything."
With that he wiped the look of brooding from his face, looking up at the night sky.
