Jobs and careers are a funny thing. One day, you're busy doing research on cellular structures and at the same time attempting to figure out ways to apply your knowledge of reishi to it so that way you can advance the human anatomy and biology. The next day you get an email about a particularly gruesome murder and because of your skill in particle awareness and manipulation, you can help detect the killer and solve this horrific mystery.
This, was a day in the life of Sebastian, part time Research Assistant, part time crime scene investigator.
He checked his email in the morning while sipping coffee. His hair was particularly messy as he had a bad night of sleep due to allergies. The bags under his eyes were designer, most likely Chanel.
"Sebastian, you are requested to assist with the investigation on the murder of Tomoko Kageyoshi. For the purpose of maintaining confidentiality, the details of the murder must be discussed in person. 6pm. Olive Durham will be arriving shortly after you with more information"
"Well. At least I'll get paid. This sounds worse than what's being said in the email. And Olive Durham, I've heard that name before."
Sebastian performed his morning routine, getting himself ready and dressing himself up professionally. He neatly tied his floral print tie to his blue oxtord shirt, slipped on his khakis and boat shoes, and made his way to the precinct. The name "Olive Durham" kept ringing in the back of his head. Though he was not deeply in the field of criminal justice, preferring to keep that and the field of science separate to not cause any moral or professional conflicts, he heard that name before. Sebastian was once called on an investigation of theft, and received word that Olive had single-handedly apprehended the thieves with some advanced ability she had. That piqued Sebastian's interest. Were there other people out there that were just like him? Could he finally find the answers he'd been searching for for years? He couldn't ponder on all those questions at the moment. He had a job to focus on. All other extracurricular activity would just have to wait.
He arrived in a short amount of time, entering through a large, metal reinforced double door and made his way through the very back, past several small offices and cubicles reserved for a number of employees, officers, private investigators, and the like. The building was relatively old, dreary, and decrepit, typical of a precinct and just like the ones Sebastian saw in all of those crime shows. Several empty rooms had broken down bulletin boards with old pictures of several suspects and criminals that ended up on TV. It was eerie to see the faces of those committing heinous crimes on a print out and just hanging off of a board.
Sebastian turned and entered the very last room, seeing several private investigators and law enforcement officials donning uniforms and other gear, perusing over the recent murder.
"Hey. Uh... Sebastian here reporting for the investigation on the murder. I got an email earlier?"
A middle aged, mustached man in a casual police uniform lifted his head up, his dark brown eyes scanning the room for where that voice came from. Guessing that his old age might have hindered his ability to pick up on the location of sounds, Sebastian lifted and waved his hand to attract his attention. It was then that the man locked onto him.
"It's you! Perfect. Welcome."
The man got up and went to Sebastian, shaking his hand and greeting him. Without a second to spare, the man went straight to business.
"The name is Shō Midori. I'm the head Private Investigator here. We called you because your powers could help us out with this murder. We've got a really strange case here."
Shō reached into his pocket and pulled out several pictures of the crime scene. It was especially gruesome and strange. It was a double homicide, one of the victims was found bloody with a coil of rope, several nuts and bolts, and a bunch of stained business cards. The victim worked at a dock, but no one knew him that well, so information was bleak at that point.
"This doesn't sound too promising, but we're not gonna focus on the odds stacked against us. Do you have any physical evidence, like the business cards or the rope?" Sebastian asked, hand lightly pressed over his mouth in a pose of thought and examination.
"Yeah, we do. Check the table over here." Shō directed Sebastian to the table, where all the evidence was laid out. The smell of blood was still sharp, but now had an extra hint of decay on it. Sebastian looked at the business cards, which the information was illegible because of how deep the blood seeped into the paper. That didn't matter, though, as Sebastian wouldn't necessarily need the information. Picking it up, he deeply examined it, as if he was trying to get the card to tell him something.
"I see. There are traces of spiritual particles. I can sense it on this card, and all the other evidence too. Whoever murdered Kageyoshi was after him for a damn good reason, and was anything but human."
As Sebastian continued examining the evidence, the loud, static-ey blare of a radio came on.
"zzzzzbbbbzzzzztALL OFFICERS. PLEASE REPORT TO AOYAGI ROADbzzzzzbbbzzzzzt. I REPEAT. ALL OFFICERS PLEASE REPORT TO--"
The radio report was interrupted by a loud gunshot. The office went into a panic. Everyone inside began yelling unintelligible law enforcement jargon and ran outside to their police cars.
"Sebastian! Follow me!" Shō yelled as he ran through the doors and outside to the nearest police car. Sebastian, in a realm of confusion and bewilderment, followed suit and hopped in the car. The driver slammed on the gas, making a bee line for Aoyagi Road.
This was going to be a long, heinous day.
