Mikayla Akiyama
That horrifying moment replayed itself over and over within Mikayla Akiyama’s mind; that moment that changed her life forever. It was as vivid as the moment in which it occurred.
**Some Time Ago**
She was out on her usual patrol in the dead of night, without the assistance of her usual partners Kiyomi Akimoto, Erika Akimoto, and the rare inclusion of Karina Sasaki. By then, she was a well-established Shinigami Representative with ample skill in the use of her zanpakutou’s Shikai, Fullbring, some knowledge in Kido and quickly mastered her use in high-speed movement. Needless to say, she felt she had the skill necessary to survive off on her own.
The patrol started off innocent, quiet, and with hardly a peep from the Hollows that would usually make themselves known once they found their primary prey; human souls. The silence of the night was eerie to the young Substitute Shinigami, like a scene from a horror movie just before the main villain appears to kill the main protagonist. Of course, something as silly as that wasn’t going through Mikayla’s mind the moment that the being that would alter the course of her life made its appearance.
It was a menacing presence; a feeling of concentrated hatred that coated her body from head to toe, like a suffocating blanket. For the first time since her discovery of her powers, she felt fear. The hand that held her zanpakutou tightened as it shook with quaking nerves that threatened to fail her should she come face to face with the source of his ominous reiatsu. As she contemplated her body’s fight-or-flight response, the familiar sensation of a Plus soul’s pure reiatsu seeking refuge from the smothering darkness that approached, snapped her awake from her crippling fear.
Every inch of her body felt like it was telling her not to go; the shaking persisted and her palms were lined with a thin film of sweat. However, in her heart, she knew that her conscience wouldn’t let her leave such a dangerous individual run free nor leave a defenseless soul to meet such a horrific end. Her focus tightened, her heart steadying as she collected reiryoku at her feet and took off into the air with a pulse of green light, beginning her race towards the center of Karakura Town, where she would meet her adversary face to face, her long, twin tailed hair and modified Shinigami robes, fluttering against the rush of air as she moves from rooftop to rooftop.

The distance between Mikayla and her intended target gradually diminished with each step she took forward, and likewise, the pressure of the reiatsu increased. Her intuition warned her that whatever this Hollow presence was, it was certainly not the ordinary Menos that she normally encountered; it was far more sinister. Mikayla’s right arm stretched out towards her side, the bracelet around her wrist glowing purple and releasing an orb of reiryoku out that expands and slams into Mikayla, surrounding her in the same purple glow that solidifies into her Starry Night armor.
One final jump propels her in between source of the hollow Reiatsu and the plus soul it was seeking to devour. The rattle of metal as her boots hit the ground echoes into the dark night sky when her aqua eyes come upon the monstrosity that was the Hollow. It was grotesque, like something out of a psycho’s worst nightmare, bearing sharp, animalistic fangs, crimson eyes, a contorted face similar to that of a fox with a pattern across its face reminiscent of a fool’s mask. Its body bore a cross between a kitsune and some sort of bony creature unknown to even the likes of fiction. The kitsune hollow growled in an unearthy tone, lurching forward as if preparing to leap.
Mikayla stared silently at this creature, having never seen such a being before in her life and it almost certainly renewed her fear in it. Her right hand moves towards her left side, grabbing the hilt of her zanpakutou and draws the silver blade from the sheath, her left hand grabbing the base of the hilt once it was placed in front of her, aiming the sharp weapon towards her target. ”I… won’t let you do as you please..” Mikayla mutters beneath her breath, as if she needed the reassurance of her own resolve to face off against what will likely be her greatest challenge.

The ensuing fight could only be described as chaotic. Both combatants shot back and forth between buildings like streams of black and purple beneath the bright moon of the night sky. Neither could land decisive blows against the other and each clash only resulted in another stalemate of power, even with Mikayla in her Shikai state. The majority of the fight was a blur to her, the movements were so fast, the reactions so instinctive that she hardly knew that she was doing half of what she pulled off; as if her body fought on its own and her mind struggled to keep up.
Even with such durable armor protecting her body from significant harm, her stamina was another story completely. The Hollow was intelligent; it knew that it couldn’t deal damage with the armor in the way so it went for the exposed regions on her upper thighs, her mid arms and her head, managing a few nicks here and there. But Mikayla didn’t make it easy for it; cleverly guarding the regions she knew were exposed to damage.
Before long, the Substitute Shinigami and the Hollow were growing exhausted from their battle, and stood for their final clash. As per usual of a Hollow, its last ditch effort was a fully charged Cero from its maw with Mikayla drawing power to her zanpakutou for her Seismic Rift. However, Mikayla had a trick up her sleeve; just as her blade met with the ray of red reiryoku, her Shunko activates and surrounds her body, granting her the power necessary to cleave through the beam.
On the other end of the beam was the gaping jaw of the Kitsune, which could not stop the combined force of Mikayla’s Shunko and Shikai. The tip of the blade pierces into the mask of the Hollow, snapping it in half. The next moment was the one that would alter the course of her life. Shards of the broken mask spread like buckshot from the impact of the explosive force of Shunko, one shard in particular landed in her eye.
Human instincts kicked in and her eye snapped shut at the intrusion of a foreign object. Mikayla dropped back while the Kitsune let out its death throes and gradually evaporated into a cloud of black reiatsu that faded into the night. With the threat gone, Mikayla could check her eye and assess the damage only to find that the fragment of the mask had vanished. She wasn’t aware then, what this encounter held for her future.

In the days that followed the encounter with the Kitsune Hollow, everything seemed normal with things returning to their usual routine. The only difference was the lingering notion of being watched by an ominous presence that Mikayla often experienced. It reminded her of the way that she felt that someone was attempting to communicate with her prior to her first contact with her zanpakutou spirit, Lily.
Her patrols after the first pangs of paranoia were laden with dizzy spells and the indescribable sensation of a dark hatred seething deep within her. It was obvious enough to the Substitute Shinigami that over-the-counter medication won’t resolve what was wrong with her. Her next option was confiding her symptoms to the closest medical professional that she knew: Karina. Unfortunately for her, Karina’s expertise on Mikayla’s condition was limited and could not provide much help. Normally, Karina would recommend that going to the 4th Squad hospital and receiving appropriate treatment would be the best option, but given the circumstances of Mikayla’s condition, it was unlikely that anything positive would come of it.
While Karina spent time trying to figure out what it was that was affecting Mikayla, she continued her patrols, though as time progressed, it became far more dangerous than before. On one particular instance, she nearly died to a Hollow that is normally trivial to a Shinigami of her particular skill level. On the verge of death, Mikayla felt herself black out. The next time she awoke, she found herself on the floor, covered in cuts from an unknown source and the Hollow that had attacked her was gone. Subsequent treatment by Karina revealed the presence of Hollow Reiatsu within her system for the first time.
Aware of the Hollow within Mikayla, Karina informed her patient of what was happening which paralleled what had happened to the Vizards that had left Soul Society long ago. The news was certainly devastating to Mikayla, understanding at that point, that her life as a Substitute Shinigami was over and would be considered a Rogue; a Renegade and would be hunted by the Soul Society.

There were plenty of things running through the mind of Mikayla as she contemplated her fate now that her life was in more danger than ever before, but first, she needed to keep herself from succumbing to the Hollow. The only route either girl could think of was to search for the Hollow within her inner World and subjugate it. At first, Mikayla was apprehensive, believing that in her current condition, facing off against a Hollow that was anywhere near as strong as the Kitsune that caused this issue could be fatal this time around. The passage of time did well to soothe her doubts, however, once she realized that unless she brought this foreign power under control, she was dead anyway.
With Karina standing guard over her body, Mikayla dove into the inner recesses of her soul. Expecting to find Lily sitting in the perpetual night hill, she was instead face to face with a Hollow bearing a disturbingly similar appearance to her, albeit clad in black and red rather than purple and aqua. A stunned Mikayla stared in silence as this Hollow introduced herself as “Riku”, expressing her displeasure that a filthy Shinigami had intruded on her home. At such an audacious claim, Mikayla’s fear was quickly replaced with disgust and a back and forth argument began, each throwing insults at the other. Despite the disparity of their races, their argument was reminiscent of a sibling spat than a being at the verge of losing her life and the perpetrator.
Their venom-spitting came to an abrupt close when Mikayla declared that she would bring Riku to her knees and show her whose world it really was. The claim was met with the sadistic grin of the Hollow being that drew a zanpakutou that looked to be the inverse colors of what Scarlet Lily was. Mikayla’s eyes locked with horror upon realization that this Hollow must have not only assumed her appearance, but also her powers. There was no doubt in her mind that this fight would be the one where her life would truly be on the line.

The usually quiet world of Mikayla’s Inner soul erupted with the sound of clashing metal, the yells of females filled with killing intent, and the dull roar of energy waves clashing together with explosive results. Riku matched Mikayla’s potential blow for blow, and in some respects, outmatched her. It was far more difficult than Mikayla had originally envisioned. Unlike her fight with the Kitsune Hollow, where she had a clear advantage with the armor, there was no such advantage within her soul, not to mention Riku had the same powers as her.
As the battle raged within, Mikayla’s body in the real world had begun to Hollowfy with the intensity of the Reiatsu in her soul. Karina used Rikujou Korou to try to hold her body in place, but when Riku was beginning to wrestle control out of Mikayla’s grasp, the Hollowfication accelerated to the point that the body animated and broke the binding kido. Despite Mikayla not being in control, the half-Hollow body immediately identified Karina as a threat and lunged for an attack. Karina shielded herself with her Sacred Light Flowers, and instead of engaging the Hollow to go for the kill, the skilled Shinigami opted to corral the Hollow around Karakura carefully, using herself as bait to prevent innocent people from getting involved and minimize damage to structures.
Meanwhile, the fight within Mikayla’s soul continued, with Riku gradually overpowering Mikayla as her stamina whittles away. Her breakthrough did not occur until she attempted to use her Kido, which did not match the power of her zanpakutou, but this act of desperation revealed that Kido was the only thing Riku could not replicate. Mikayla then understood what her win condition was and used what remained of her strength on the gamble that she could hold Shunko long enough to defeat Riku.

Electricity flowed actively around the form of the small Shinigami; battered and bruised, but not defeated. The last time she had used this ability, it was for a single attack, so even if this Hollow was somehow a part of the Kitsune, there was no way she would have sufficient knowledge about the ability to counter it. Resuming her attack, Riku’s arrogance persisted since she believed that Shunko was nothing more than a cheap light show.
Riku was in for a surprise when she was met with the sudden power surge from Mikayla’s combined Shunko and Shikai state. Riku’s underestimation prior to the clash meant that that single attack was sufficient to deal a devastating blow to her torso, completely turning the tides in Mikayla’s favor. As a result, on Karina’s end, the Hollow’s movement progressively diminished to a sluggish pace. Reapplying the binding Kido, Karina continued to monitor the body closely now that she wasn’t worried about collateral damage.
A half hour had passed when the hollowfied “bones” that had formed on Mikayla’s body shattered into fading wisps of reiatsu, leaving just a kitsune-like mask on her face. The mask itself eventually disintegrated as well, but it was obvious by now that Mikayla was victorious in her struggle against the Inner Hollow. Karina dispelled the kido before grabbing Mikayla’s unconscious body and carrying her to a remote part of Karakura to watch over her until she woke up.
Once she had regained consciousness, Mikayla sits up as if from a lucid dream and looks around herself, only to find Karina sitting beside her. After spending some time discussing the events thus far, Karina admitted before she left, that she could not remain around her long given the laws of Soul Society about Shinigamis that undergo Hollowfication. She will pretend to have never seen her but would also not reveal her location or go after Mikayla herself, and support her from afar.
Mikayla’s heart sunk knowing that her only connection to the Soul Society would have to distance herself from her in order to preserve her own position, but she understood. For now, Riku was under her control, so it was up to her to prove that she could maintain that control and find a way to regain the Soul Society’s trust. Mikayla, at that moment, discarded her Shinigami Representative badge into the Karakura River, knowing that she did not deserve to have it while being seen as a criminal in the eyes of the Soul Society.

**Present Day**
Awakening from her troublesome memories, Mikayla finds herself crouched, staring at the reflection of her face in the motionless, clear waters of a puddle that had formed in the rains of the day before. Her turquoise eyes peer between the bent fingers of her right hand that was held diagonally across her face as if she were going to claw her skin off. Black reiryoku, outlined with the fine blue of her own collects at her fingertips, the Vizard “dragging” her hand down towards her chin. As the hand moved, the porcelain structure of a white/black kitsune mask with a menacing, toothy grin/frown took shape over her face. The sclera of her eyes darkens to a full black and her irises become a much darker blue than before.
”This is what I look like now..” Mikayla whispers softly to herself, her voice reverberating with the Hollow soul that she now resonated with. The sensation she was feeling was that of the unknown; like she no longer recognized herself.
A tentative thumb from her right hand presses to the bottom of the mask, reluctantly beginning to push it up towards her forehead. Part of her was afraid that perhaps the Hollowfication had altered something more than just her Reiatsu and her eyes, but a sigh of relief leaves her lips once the mask crests over her cranium and came to rest on top right part of her head. With the exception of her black sclera, Mikayla at least looked somewhat normal with the mask used more like an accessory.
Her right elbow props itself on her bent knee, resting her chin on the lifted palm, ”How am I going to explain this to the Gotei?”
By now, it was likely obvious to those in the Seireitei that Mikayla had become a Rogue, especially now that she had abandoned the very item that she had been given to prove she was a trusted agent of the Soul Society. Either that, or they believed she was dead.

There was many a concern filling the mind of the Vizard as she stares absentmindedly at her reflection in the puddle, the tendrils of her long aqua hair swaying carelessly with the mid-afternoon summer breeze that swept past her figure. The gentle caress of the wind, the soft sounds of water rippling in a nearby stream, the musical chirping of the birds overhead was therapeutic to Mikayla, calming her as time went by.
In a wisp of black and blue reiryoku, the mask dissipates from her head, the black of her eyes vanishing with it to return Mikayla to her original appearance. She reaches with her left hand to grab the scabbard of her zanpakutou that lay resting at her feet before standing up, ”I gotta come up with something…”
In her mind, Mikayla understood that with Riku under control for now, she didn’t need to worry about her dizzy spells, vomiting white reiryoku, and the fatigue that came with the infection. This meant she could freely focus on planning what she could do to regain the trust of the Seireitei. Anything she came up with, however, always circled back to one factor: her Hollow. Without perfected control over Riku and the Hollowfication powers that she had attained, it would be unlikely that she could ever achieve that goal. If she ever lost control of Riku and took lethal damage, it’s probably that Riku could take over her body and begin a rampage around Soul Society, which is what they’d prefer to avoid.
Exhaling, Mikayla’s steps were slow and quiet as she walks the shores of the stream that lead towards Karasu River, her mind in a jumble when considering what her options were. Tufts of fluffy white clouds sail across beautiful blue skies, traced by the gaze of the young girl, lost in thought. I could try and focus on refining my control, but if I don’t try to prove my innocence, I’ll have to deal with the Shinigami that want to hunt me.. This was the core concern in Mikayla’s mind, knowing that attempting to train would more than likely draw the attention of Shinigami in the area. ”Aaaah, what do I dooo??” Whines Mikayla.

Some time passes as Mikayla continues her slow pace along the stream, her zanpakutou rattling within the confines of its scabbard when the familiar sensation of a Shinigami’s Reiatsu makes itself known. By instinct alone, Mikayla’s head turns towards the direction in the sky from which the Reiatsu is originating. Her heart’s pace accelerates in fear that perhaps the Shinigami had sensed her, especially with Hollow Reiatsu now mixed with her own.
Mikayla scrutinizes the movement of the Shinigami’s Reiatsu to the inch, wanting to assure herself that he was not coming closer. In the meantime, she carefully tries to suppress her Reiatsu, but the process of trying to hide her pressure turns out to be the very act that draws attention to her. In an instant, the Shinigami is felt approaching at Shunpo speeds, closing the distance to her in less than a couple of seconds, giving the Vizard almost no time to run.
Not a moment later did the distinctive tap of wooden sandals hitting the ground ring out from behind Mikayla. Turning around, her long twin tails whirling about to her sides, she catches the gaze of a Shinigami, the glint of the zanpakutou’s blade easily visible. She had knowledge of the Shinigami that regularly patrol Karakura, and this male was definitely not one of them.
Mikayla’s heart continues to thump, almost painfully, within her bosom, firmly believing that this Shinigami was someone sent to seek out Rogue Shinigami; perhaps a bounty hunter or 2nd Squad member. The silence between them felt like an eternity.
”It looks like I’ve found myself a Rogue…” The Shinigami finally breaks the silence with a cold, matter-of-fact, sort of tone, ”You’re a Shinigami, but you’re wearing ordinary clothing instead of the standard robes.. They’re not even modified robes…”

There was no point in lying to the Shinigami. Her human body was currently at home with her Mod Soul in control of it, and she had long since abandoned the Shinigami robes she used to wear in favor of her normal clothing. However, Mikayla did not seem to respond, more frozen due to her inability to figure out what she wanted to say to this Shinigami.
”You won’t speak of these atrocities? Why do I smell the stench of a Hollow on you?” The Shinigami’s grip on the hilt begins to tighten, as does his stare.
In her defense, Mikayla lowers her zanpakutou to show submission, looking directly into the eyes of the Shinigami in hopes that her words will be seen as sincerity,”I’m an agent of the Soul Society… A Substitute Shinigami..”
A look of bewilderment twisted the visage of the already agitated male upon realization of who Mikayla actually was, ”Wait a second… You are a Rogue! You’re that missing Substitute Shinigami! That explains why I sensed a Hollow from you.. You’ve become one of them haven’t you?! People like you disgust me!” The Shinigami shouts while wisps of light green reiatsu flicker and swirl around him, showing his intent to attack.
Mikayla quickly drops her zanpakutou and shakes her hands towards him desperately, ”Wait, wait! I didn’t seek this power! It happened when I was out on patrol and encountered an Adjuchas. A part of its mask broke off into my eye when I defeated it and that’s what caused my Hollowfication! I had to control it!” She pleads, her eyes showing distress.
”Save it! You should not have wasted your time, because the Soul Society would have wanted you dead either way! You will turn Hollow and die… Just like the rest of them..” With those words, the Shinigami alters the position of his zanpakutou, readying for his lunge to attack.
Mikayla’s face saddens, finally understanding that this Shinigami could not be convinced and replies with a soft tone, ”I’ll show you… That I won’t become one of them…”

Mikayla had no intention of killing her fellow Shinigami, unlike the male before her, but she needed to prove to him that she had some level of control over the Hollow within her. Maybe then, he would believe her, and then maybe convincing him that her Hollowfication was against her own will would be easier.
Combat was imminent, so Mikayla bends her fingers to a claw formation as before, brings it over her face. The action was perplexing to the Shinigami as he watches her, wondering what she would do. Black reiryoku outlined with her original sapphire coloring joins at her fingertips, Mikayla “ripping” her face in one motion, summoning the Vizard mask over her face. Simultaneously, the pressure of her Reiatsu increases noticeably with the additional strength of the Hollow in her soul.
”You really are a monster…” The Shinigami began to say, directing the tip of the blade in the direction of Mikayla, ”I’ll at least grant you a final respect and allow you to die as a Shinigami.” As he finishes his sentence, he steps off the terrain and instantly vanishes from sight upon activating Shunpo. His right hand brings his zanpakutou across towards his left side; releasing a gleam of silver in the wake of his blade.
Mikayla, in the meantime, had crouched to grab the scabbard of her zanpakutou, her right hand wrapping around the hilt of the weapon and drawing it right when the blade of the Shinigami clashes with it in a brilliant flash of sparks and ringing of metal meeting metal. Mikayla’s dark blue eyes gaze with a firm resolve from behind her Hollow mask and the aqua bangs of her hair, ”I don’t plan on dying..”
The Shinigami is momentarily shocked at the sound of Mikayla’s changed voice, noticing how it reverberated with the sinister intent of Riku, this being his first time ever hearing it. But in that moment of shock, Mikayla tightens her grip on her katana, drawing on strength alone to push force the Shinigami back and airborne, her left hand pointing towards the airborne Shinigami, still holding the scabbard as a red ring of reiryoku encircles her hand, crackling like electricity. The Shinigami’s eyes widen just as a sound reminiscent of a rubber bounce fills the air with a small Bala escaping Mikayla’s fist.

Mikayla Akiyama
The Shinigami had only an instant to defend against the Bala, but ultimately fails, being struck in the center of the chest with a concussive impact. He is sent sailing back a few dozen feet but manages to recover in time to land on his feet.
Reiryoku continues to crackle around her knuckles while Mikayla’s eyes fixate on the surprised Shinigami, ”If I had no control over the Hollow… I wouldn’t be able to use techniques only Hollows have access to… I only just took control over it, so it may not be that strong, but I’m sure with some practice… I could use it as efficiently as I could use Kido..”
”What the hell was that?...” The man growls, gritting his teeth beneath the cover of his lips. It was clear that this man had only the knowledge taught within the academy and likely hasn’t encountered an Adjuchas Hollow, let alone a Vizard.
Mikayla lifts her Hollow mask to rest at the corner of her cranium, returning her voice back to normal since her mask wasn’t filtering her voice, ”You have to believe me… I’m only trying to perfect my control so I won’t be a threat to the Soul Society.”
”No.. It’s exactly that reason why you’d be better off dead.” The Shinigami lifts his zanpakutou over his head, swirling frost white reiryoku around the blade, shouting an incantation and then a name, followed by a burst of Reiatsu. Dust is lifted from the earth around him from the sudden increase of Reiatsu activity. A white, whip-like extension of white flames lashes out from the center of the cloud of dirt, scattering it with that single swing as the flames retract and reform the blade of the Shinigami’s katana. ”You won’t deceive me. You won’t intimidate me! I’ll show you my strength as a true Shinigami!” He calls out, his form outlined by his bright Reiatsu.
Mikayla lets out a soft sigh, lowering her mask back over her face, ”I guess I won’t be able to get through to you.” The Vizard raises her zanpakutou, holding her sheath in her left hand, taking a readied stance.

As soon as Mikayla’s zanpakutou was lifted, the Shinigami leaps forward, quickly repositioning with the use of a Shunpo step, appearing high above Mikayla and swinging downward. The whip-like flames stretch like a tongue at high speed towards her, radiating enough heat to create visible waves of heat as it travels.
Mikayla bends her body back, using just the fingertips of her left hand to perform a skillful backwards, one-handed cartwheel. The tip of the flames crash into the ground right where Mikayla was standing only a moment ago, and retract immediately afterwards.
”Hado no Yon! Byakurai!” Joining his left hand’s pointer and middle fingers, electricity balls at his fingertips, and releases a swift bolt of white lightning that streaks across the blue sky straight towards Mikayla.
Considering the speed of the kido, Mikayla’s experience with Kido gave her just enough of a reaction time to turn her body to the side, hoping the shot of lightning would just zip past her. However, she underestimates just how wide the Kido is and is grazed along her bare right shoulder, cutting and slightly burning her otherwise flawless skin.
Before she could voice how upset she was over him damaging her skin, her turquoise eyes catch sight of a literal wall of flames coating the sky above her, racing down towards her. In her current state, the Hollow’s Bala nor Cero would be sufficient to defend her against this and her armor bracelet was on her human body, so she dispels her mask before lifting her zanpakutou. ”Terashimasu… Hiiro usu murasakiiro!” Mikayla shouts out, her zanpakutou glows and appears to melt to reveal a crimson red blade, her hilt guard becoming a golden crescent moon with a glow resembling the aurora borealis wrapping around it.
Reacting with what time she had left, Mikayla wraps her blade in a frost white, red outlined reiryoku before swinging her zanpakutou over her head, releasing a large crescent wave of gravitational energy, rising up to meet the wall of flames. The moment the Seismic Rift wave collided with the wall of flames; the white flames were cleaved in half, causing the two parts to crash into the ground harmlessly around Mikayla.
The crescent wave plows forward, racing towards the Shinigami, who quickly ducks beneath the attack. Noticing that Mikayla was no longer wearing her mask, a smirk comes across his face, now believing that the fight was his with Mikayla no longer using the strength of the Hollow, ”Abandoned both the Shinigami and the Hollow now? Your betrayal knows no bounds.”

”I betrayed no one! My loyalty will always be to the Seireitei!’ Mikayla snaps back, collecting Reiryoku at her feet and bursting skyward with a pulse of green light, activating Bringer’s Light. Meeting the Shinigami in the air, both of her hands now come to rest on the hilt of her zanpakutou,
”Then die, as Seireitei’s law says you should.”
Silence befell the two combatants as Mikayla shuts her eyes, a stiffer breeze now whipping Mikayla’s long twin tailed hair to and fro, attributed to their high altitude. Finally, Mikayla’s lids retract to reveal her turquoise hues, ”Being loyal doesn’t always mean you agree with the decisions and actions of who you serve… Eventually… I will show that even with this Hollow within me… Nothing has changed...”
The Shinigami arcs his right arm behind him, readying himself in a stance to strike as soon as the talking was over, ”Your job is to ferry Souls and guard this city… You’re not here to question long-standing ideals.”
Mikayla, this time around, was oddly quiet and does not respond to the statement. The Shinigami huffs in disgust, adding no further words when he lashes his arm forward, launching the tentacle of flames towards Mikayla.
Seeing the attack, Mikayla lifts her zanpakutou with the tip of the blade aiming at the Earth below, ”Red Shift..” The words spoken create a swift orb of red light to expand from the hilt of the zanpakutou and fill a 100M diameter area. The Shinigami blinks in confusion, not knowing why the flames were suddenly moving in slow motion even though he could feel his arm moving normally. Unsure of what to believe, he sudden feels a sharp pain at the bottom of his chin as a kick from Mikayla’s right foot rocks his jaw and propels him at high speed several dozen feet away.
Growling, the Shinigami stands on his Reiryoku, his left hand brushing a trail of crimson blood away from his chin as he only now sees Mikayla vanishing in her Bringer’s Light step. ”What the hell is going on?” He angrily mutters beneath his breath, watching as Mikayla appears where he just was, showing how he had been hit by the kick only a couple of moments ago.

Another couple of moments pass without further attacks, leaving the Shinigami to believe that Mikayla’s assault had ended. However, just as he believes that, the slow-motion figure of Mikayla in the middle of her kick disappears as well. His hands begin to tighten around the hilt of his weapon, trying to anticipate another frontal attack, but this time, he feels a dull, but painful blast of energy slamming into his back with tremendous force.
A cry of a mix of surprise and pain rings out from the depths of his throat as his body is catapulted forward with the power of the attack. Attempting to halt his fall, the Shinigami extends his whip out towards his side, aiming to wrap the flames around the trunk of a tree and pull him out of the uncontrollable fall. As he soon realizes, however, his eyes still perceive the whip to be traveling in slow motion, so he’s completely unsure of whether or not that whip had tethered to the tree or not and prematurely retracts the weapon.
When he did not feel the resistance of the large oak tree upon the hilt, his heart thumped, knowing he had lost his only way to recover as his body craters into the earth with a thunderous impact, shaking the earth for a moment while tossing vast amounts of rubble and dust into the air. Mikayla lifts her left palm, pointing it towards the Shinigami, who was still within the crater a hundred feet below her and begins to recite an incantation, ”Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws! Hadou no Sanjuusan! Soukatsui!”
The completion of the incantation draws icy blue reiryoku to the center of her palm, creating a soccerball sized orb of energy that erupts in the direction of the Shinigami as a wave of blue flames.

Frustration, confusion, and resentment boils within the soul of the Shinigami as he stumbles onto his feet after suffering a brutal pair of attacks at the hands of Mikayla. His chin was rattled and slightly numb and an annoying pain shot through his nerves whenever he flexes the muscles of his back. To make things worse, he was still under the effects of Mikayla’s Red Shift ability, meaning that the Soukatsui that she had released appeared to be moving much slower than it actually was. By now, he figures that attempting to counterattack the ability with offensive skills was pointless with one of his most important senses effectively impaired.
”Bakudo No Sanjuu Kyuu! Enkosen!” A circular shield of condensed Reiryoku materializes around the Shinigami, the burst of flames crashing into the shield and being harmlessly dissipated to the sides. The shield shortly collapses after the attack lands.
Growling in his anger, the Shinigami rears his arm back, intending on attacking with such speed that there would be no doubt that his attacks would land. Sending his arm outward, the whip of flames bends with the velocity, but then glows with the infusion of reiryoku, suddenly splitting into about a hundred flame whips, each of which shoots for Mikayla, appearing to fill the sky like tendrils of fine hair.
The volume of flames arcing across the sky alarms Mikayla, ”Wouldn’t be a good idea to dodge that… There’s too many..” Instead, she decides to surround herself in red reiryoku that swirls around her at speed. Gravity accentuates the strength of this swirling shield, drawing each of the flames whips straight to it. The whips repeatedly crack against the surface of the powerful shield, arcing back so that they can come back down again.
Despite the visual impairment of his eyes, the Shinigami undoubtedly feels the recoil of the whips striking Mikayla’s shield, causing him to grin in self-satisfaction. Resummoning her Hollow mask, Mikayla aims her right hand towards the Shinigami, ”This won’t be too strong… But it might just be enough to jolt him.”

A thin, wide line of crimson reiryoku shines in front of Mikayla, her hand, still gripping her zanpakutou, glows with the same reiryoku as the distinctive charging sound of a cero fills the air. To the Shinigami that was her intended target, not only was the attack difficult to see since its color was the same as the Red Shift ability, but the slow motion effect didn’t help him either.
”Guh… The Menos made this seem so easy..” Mikayla curses herself as faintly like the wind that tickles at the skin of her cheeks with each moment that passes due to her weak proficiency over her Hollow’s powers. It felt like an eternity had passed until Mikayla felt the beam was ready.
”Cero..” As that single word slips from her lips, a flash of red light fills the sky while an arm’s width beam of reiryoku escapes the glowing right hand of the Vizard. The strength of the beam shatters her shield and parts the sea of flames before it.
The Shinigami pauses with confusion, trying to figure out why his once solid wall of flames is being split apart like tissue paper. The telltale sound of a Cero being fired alerts the Shinigami of the danger that was approaching, but remains confused due to the fact that he’s used to Cero blasts being much larger and noticeable. Not taking any chances, he leaps from the ground with a Shunpo step with the ground beneath him swelling, then exploding with a large red orb of energy once the Cero detonates on Impact.
Panting with a slight level of exhaustion, the Shinigami looks down to see the devastated earth where he once stood, ”God damn it… She can use the Cero blast too?” His coffee brown eyes lifts, gazing over to the stationary Mikayla, who watches him carefully.

A sweeping motion of her arm dispels Red Shift, finally returning normal vision to the Shinigami, who remains cautious even though he can see again. ”Do you understand now that I don’t want to fight? If I had succumbed to my Inner Hollow, I would have killed you by now.”
The Shinigami grits his teeth angrily, his confidence in defeating the Vizard finally waning given his lack of success thus far. He doesn’t respond at first, scouring his mind for any sort of plan he could devise that may just give him an edge when he so desperately needed one.
Alas, nothing came to mind, and with no plan, it was unlikely that he could overcome the clear difference of strength between him and Mikayla. An exasperated exhale escapes his mouth; the white flames that continued to lick at his ankles recede and dissipate to reform the sealed zanpakutou that had first formed them. ”Just what makes you different from any other Hollow?”
Mikayla seals her zanpakutou, though her mask remained, which she slowly lifts like she had before to rest at the top right side of her head. ”My situation is similar to the Visoreds that left Soul Society. It was forcefully induced, and to survive, we had to overcome the power of our inner hollow to show dominance over our soul. That dominance over them grants us their power as well.” Her words were soft despite the sclera of her eyes being the frightening black that it was, ”What you’ve seen is the result of my will to live… My refusal to succumb to a Hollow… I’ll tell you again that my Hollowfication wasn’t something I sought, but something I had to do if I wanted to live.” The female’s eyes showed her sincerity, even with the Hollow taint that currently had a hold of her, and made a silent plea towards the male figure before her.

Hearing the testimony of the Vizard, the Shinigami recalls the events of Aizen Sosuke and Kaname Tousen’s betrayal prior to the uprising of his army of Arrancar brought forth by the power of the Hyogyoku. He wasn’t around to witness these events personally, but he remembers the gossip of the people Aizen had victimized; the Vizard included. And now, after the war with the Hollows, those same Hollowfied Shinigami have regained the trust of Seireitei for their dedication and were reinstated their positions as Captains for those that held those positions before.
As the silence persisted, the Shinigami’s gaze softens, taking notice of Mikayla’s sincerity and the clear fact that he was still alive despite what he normally believed was Hollow behavior. If what she was saying was true, then who is he to say that she couldn’t do the same as that famous group of Vizards? Mikayla appeared to catch on to the Shinigami’s changing perspective and softens her stance, finally dispelling her Hollow mask which returns her eyes to the same beautiful turquoise hue that it was before. ”You’re strong. I’ll give you that… But, I can’t say that I have much faith in that you’ll pull off what they did. Not that I could do something about it otherwise. Fine… I’ll go, but I’ll be back if I hear about a Vizard causing trouble in Karakura, you got it?”
Mikayla looks to him with a softer gaze, a sweet smile accentuating her visage as the Shinigami turns around and vanishes with a Shunpo step, leaving Mikayla on her own in the middle of a blue sky. Breathing out to relax herself, Mikayla drops to the terrain below, sheathing her zanpakutou as she turns her head in the direction that the Shinigami had taken off in, ”I’ll prove to you that I can do this…. And when I do.. I’ll make sure to ask for your name.” The slender fingers of her right hand slip through the tendrils of her aqua hair, soft steps echoing into the warm summer air as Mikayla makes her way back home with a strengthened resolve to regain the trust of the Soul Society.
