The sun had set from a few hours in Naruki City when Fubuki made his approach there. The smell of the air was already fresh and pleasant, devoid of the corruption it gets during daytime in crowded places, but quite a few people were still hanging around. This was no good for the Shinigami’s purpose.
He was sent there following the notice of an increased Hollow activity in a few days’ period. Apparently, multiple of them had been on the same spot in several occasions, which could mean they were intelligent enough to cooperate with each other. If that was the case, they either could be convinced to join the Gotei 13’s cause in its war against Wandenreich or they were particularly dangerous and needed to be dealt with. Otherwise, chances were someone was pulling the strings from behind, and more investigation was required.
The silver-haired spirit reached the first solitary place he could find: what looked like an abandoned playground. Well, probably “abandoned” was the wrong term, since it was still in fairly good conditions. It was a pretty chill night; not what you first think of when you hear “Winter”, but still cold enough for mothers not to let their children go play outside until too late. This could explain why no one was there.
Fubuki sat on a swing and focused, but he couldn’t trace any Reiatsu he could link to a Hollow. He probably just went to the assigned place too soon, which was a habit of his. Oh, well. Not much more to do than relax and wait for a signal. Enemies could have spawned anytime, so it would be reckless to try and use the extra time to train.

Several hours had passed since Shiro began her rounds, scouting the areas she noticed were less patrolled by Shinigami than they probably should have been. It wasn't that they were lacking in their efforts, no it seemed more along the lines of a lack of actual staffing was the cause. There were people assigned but from what Shiro could tell those individuals were either assigned specific areas to patrol, or they patrolled different areas each night. She'd familiarized herself with the movement patterns and decided to assist by patrolling the areas that were less frequented.
”These patrols… do they not assign stronger Shinigami to this area? What happens if something stronger appears here…?” Shiro wondered out loud. Most of the Shinigami she’d seen within the city hadn’t been any stronger than most of the people she’d seen during her visit to the Seireitei. She’d also taken careful note of just how few of the Shinigami patrols were even capable of using Shunpo… It was no wonder they made rounds in different areas each night if the best they could do was run around like any normal person…
Shiro’s Spark Step took her from one rooftop to another roof several removed from the first. An action that would have taken the regular patrol easily five times as long to cover the same distance. The park had been busy with hollow activity lately, she would need to check it out. It was strange to think that a place so often abandoned during the night would be home to so many predators seeking a meal for themselves… Regardless, she was here to help.
”Additional patrols…?” Shiro crouched atop one of the park’s many clock towers, looking down over the park she’d noticed what looked and felt to be a Shinigami. ”Why from down on the ground though? It’s a terrible vantage point and you can hardly see anything around you from there…” Shiro quietly thought out loud to herself. Was he a normal patrol? But then if this area was being scouted then she didn’t really need to be here anymore… Then again if he spotted her he’d immediately make a connection towards her abnormality… She was a human on the top of a clock tower that one couldn’t access without special lifts or equipment… Shiro took another glance around the park, assuring herself that his viewpoint from the swing wouldn’t be all that great. From up here she could see the entire park… From down there? Not so much.

Fubuki stayed focused, in an almost meditating state, and in the end a signal did come. Well, rather than a signal it was more like a sort of almost imperceptible intermittence getting closer and closer at a very high speed. Despite his attention, he probably wouldn’t even have noticed if it wasn’t for that last detail. Either someone more skilled at hiding his or her presence than he was at sensing it was using Hohō or the Hollows had become stealthy all of a sudden.
The Shinigami lifted his head and noticed a feminine humanoid figure on top of a clock tower nearby. He couldn’t quite figure out the nature of her Reiryoku despite focusing on it, so she could very well be whom he just perceived, and possibly someone involved with the attacks. Besides, it was weird seeing a normal human up there by herself looking at what she should perceive as a deserted playground.
The Unseeded Officer got off the swing and drew his katana, all with rather slow, but smooth motions. This was meant for the unidentified person’s eyes to momentarily get used to a much different rhythm compared to that of his following actions: a full-speed Shunpo toward the base of the tower followed by enough steps to get on top of it, on the furthest side from where she was standing.
Assuming that his cheap trick worked, or that his target stayed there anyway for some reason, Fubuki would point the Zanpakutō toward her direction in a low guard while facing her side-on, the left arm along the respective side and probably out of her sight, and say in a firm, expressionless tone: ”State your business”. Meanwhile, his cold golden eyes would inspect every visible inch of whom he was facing in search for information. Her stance, eventual tools she might be carrying with herself, her clothes, anything which could give him a clue about her nature or origins.
Her eyes met with the Shinigami's. He'd seen her. What followed in his actions were somewhat peculiar. Perhaps keeping her presence low key but not enough to avoid notice had been a mistake? "Sorry... I, didn't mean to startle you..." Shiro bowed in apology to the Shinigami. "I didn't think there would be anyone patrolling this area tonight so I figured since Shinigami would be absent from this area that I could keep an eye on the place instead..." He was cautious, keeping to the other side of the clock tower. Of course she was suspicious to him. A human? Standing on top of an impossible place without any identifiable means with which to accomplish such a feat? Thankfully he didn't look like any of the few who'd spotted her during her carelessly foolish escapade through the Seireitei, but even so she should try not to make enemies, if only for Mitsuoki's sake.
"I haven't seen you around here before, are you new or did you transfer from a different assigned zone?" Shiro asked, attempting to sway the conversation into a more friendly and hospitable situation. "Ah! sorry I shouldn't be rude... My name's Shiro Inazuma, it's a pleasure to meet you." Shiro gave the shinigami her warmest smile. Hopefully her presence here didn't warrant any aggressive action from the other party... She'd hate to be the cause of further Shinigami being injured thanks to her interventions.
Shiro's sincerity in her attempt to warm a pleasant atmosphere was exemplified by the fact that her posture remained casual. She did have on her both the katana and the .44 Automatic Pistol Theocelese had given her but the pistol remained in it's holster, and the Katana remained sheathed even as Shiro explained herself despite being faced with the Shinigami's drawn and pointed blade.
She still dreaded the idea of using a gun but it didn't hurt to make a habit of keeping herself ready for any possible situation in case she might actually need to use it.
Fubuki observed the woman as she talked. Surprisingly, despite having a sharp blade pointed against, she kept showing openings and didn’t seem intentioned to draw her weaponry. Was she strong enough to afford that or as naïve as to think her friendly demeanour would have been enough to lift all suspicions off her?
Whatever the case, the Shinigami was primarily looking for dialogue. So, although he still didn’t feel safe letting go of his Zanpakutō or breaking his stance, he saw no point in being hostile toward a potential ally. He bowed as much as his torso and legs’ position allowed him introducing himself with a polite, but still somewhat inexpressive tone. “Damano Fubuki”. He rose. Should he also give out his status? Well, Shiro-San did show some knowledge about Shinigami, after all. “Gobantai. Unseeded.” Another bow followed, this time only given with his head. “Pleasure’s mine”.
As her previous question concerned his business there, it was a bit more of a gamble to answer to. But on the other hand, if she was an ally, she should be informed, and if she was an enemy, stalling the game wouldn’t have brought Fubuki anywhere. So, the Officer parted his lips once again. “Actu…”
Not even the time to finish the first word, and Fubuki felt a disturbance in the Reiatsu. A Hollow had finally approached, popping out of Hueco Mundo right between the clock tower and the still crowded part of the square. It had a somewhat humanoid form, but measured at least four meters in height and was proportionally as big. It had greyish dark brown skin, and its muscular body was characterized by the presence of an additional pair of arms originating from its shoulders. Its mask held some resemblance to the face of a Maneki-Neko.
“Please, excuse my rudeness.” Fubuki apologized quickly before dropping from the tower clock and rushing against the spirit. The intention was to talk first but, maybe fazed by the change in Reiatsu caused by the Shinigami’s Shunpo, the Hollow immediately turned toward him and lifted its two right arms to punch vertically downwards in his direction.
The attack was strong, so strong that it created two holes in the ground, which shook violently. The humans would probably think of one of these earthquake shocks which fortunately don’t last long enough to deal any significant damage. The movement was slow and telegraphed, however. Any freshly graduated grunt would be able to avoid it by stepping backwards. Not to mention, it left the Hollow open for longer than Fubuki took to recover his balance, giving him time to cut off one of his opponent’s wrists with a one-handed slash, executed by quickly using his feet to spin once, creating momentum. “Not the most experienced fighter, are you?”
That said, Fubuki stepped back toward the playground, ending barely within the Hollow’s reach, ready to step further back as soon as it prepared to attack again. The Officer had a plan to make his investigation quicker, but he needed to lure the monster to a relatively secluded area, minimizing the risk to involve humans.
Respectable. The shinigami gave not just his name but also his designation. From what Shiro experienced it was a proper and customary greeting for one of Shinigami origins to give. He was about to continue on with conversation when the Hollow made its presence known. Good. By keeping her presence on the down low she'd accomplished the purpose of not scaring away any of these monsters which might approach the human world. It was better that way because otherwise she feared they would simply come to cause problems whenever she wasn't around.
"Don't mention it." Shiro politely excused the Shinigami's rudeness, though she could hardly see it as rude since he was simply answering to his calling. To suppress the Hollows and protect the city was his job after all. Shiro couldn't fault him for that. She felt the ground shaking as the hollow slammed its fists into the ground attempting to crush the Shinigami, yet he evaded. Not surprising.
And then there were more... Four additions in total added themselves to the fight mere seconds after the first Hollow had already lost one of its hands to the Shinigami. Perhaps he was strong enough to face the one beast head on but a total of five? Had she not been here in this moment, such a situation would likely have turned grim very quickly. Even if the Shinigami managed to beat all five hollows on his own, there would be no way to minimize the damages so many foes at once would cause as a result of fighting him here... The circumstances called for swift and decisive action, something Shiro was both prepared for, and willing to provide.
The air around the playground suddenly became dense and heavy as Shiro exerted her spiritual pressure upon the five Hollows who stood before her and the Shinigami. Focused enough to bring them all crashing down into immobile heaps, yet selective enough to keep Fubuki himself from feeling these same effects. Cries of pain and surprise escaped the Hollows at the sudden weight crushing against their spirits. "I believe it's your job to take care of them isn't that right?" Shiro stated to Fubuki from atop the clock tower.
{Spoiler}Name: Reiatsu Suppression Class: Reiatsu Control Tier: I - VII (1 tier per mastery level) Type: Binding Range: 50m with no fall off Description: The power to manifest your reiatsu pressure around you, forcing your enemies to their knees with your substantial reiatsu, and even rendering them unconscious with enough advantages. This ability can also be used defensively to ward off an opponent's version of the ability.
Ok, no more need to execute the plan. This usually sounds like good news, but it wasn’t the case for Fubuki in that occasion, as the air got dense with the Reiatsu of four additional Hollows. And each of them definitely felt like the feral type, which means they probably didn’t just decide to group up on their own but were more likely controlled by a stronger entity.
Speaking of strong, a Reiatsu emanated from the clocktower where moments earlier he was trying to talk to Shiro-San. Powerful enough to suppress all five the Hollows at once and well-controlled enough to leave Fubuki unaffected. So she WAS a force to be reckoned with, after all. Quickly, the Shinigami proceeded to cut the first Hollow’s mask, reducing the whole spirit to dust. Giving the foul beings time to recover would have meant allowing them to damage the city, wasting the girl’s precious intervention.
“Hadō #33 – Sōkatsui” Blue flames of Reiatsu discharged from the Officer’s left palm toward one of the Hollows. The use of Eishohaki weakened the spell enough for it not to be lethal, but at least it dealt some damage, and more importantly allowed Fubuki to use the spared time to finish off another Hollow with a slash to the mask before it could stand on its feet. Or tentacles, as was the case.
“For tonight, yes.” He answered his ally’s question while getting ready to attack again. Despite his status as Unseeded, he was never assigned a job as simple as patrol since the Quincy invaded Soul Society. “What about you, Shiro-San? Do you scout the area often?”
{Techniques Used} Name: Hadō #33 Sōkatsui (Blue Fire, Crash Down) Class: Kido Tier: III Type: Offensive Range: Long (70m) Incantation: Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws! Description: Fires a burst of blue spiritual energy at a target in a similar manner to Shakkahō at x10 Cero Speed, but over a wider area and with more power.
So he was here only temporarily then? Was assigning extra people something the shinigami did whenever the burden of hollows became great enough? Though as large as the Seireitei was, and as likely as hollow attacks were to be all across the globe... Shiro was fairly certain they greatly lacked sufficient manpower to reasonably cover every area in the world. "Only recently... I, figured it was the least I could do for Soul Society to repay the mistakes I've made." Shiro stated. He didn't need to know the details... That she was the reason behind the recent alarms raised within Soul Society. And she even knew what it meant to be designated as a Ryoka... She blushed a little at the remembrance. Thinking back on it, it'd been a stupidly embarrassing idea in the first place. Stupid foolish curiosity. More than anything she'd allowed her strength, her power, to rule over her confidence and misguide her.
A spark Step brought Shiro down to the same level as Fubuki and the hollows that still remained. "So... was this something you anticipated?" Shiro asked, indicating the hollows and increasing the pressure upon them until they couldn't move even a single inch. She wasn't privy to the reports these Shinigami shared between one another. It'd actually been quite surprising for her to see five hollows appear in a single area all at once. But if he'd somehow been informed prior to this occurrence then it made sense why he'd been sitting and waiting patiently instead of actively scouting around on a regular patrol like the other Shinigami Shiro often observed around town.
{Spoiler} Name: Scintilla Varico (Spark Step) Class: Stepping Tier: I Type: Stepping RangeN/A Description: A movement technique that allows the user to move extremely quickly over short distances. This technique produces a single large sound on each use akin to what one hears by producing a static shock when rubbing easily charged surfaces together.
Fubuki nodded as that night’s companion explained herself. “Repay the mistakes I’ve made”? She sounded like a repented Rogue Shinigami or something, but her track felt more like that of a human back when she used it to repress the Hollows. The Officer followed her with his golden eyes as she used a peculiar form of Hohō to get down from the tower. That must have been what caused the intermittence he felt while scouting the area from the playground.
“Yes.” He answered while finishing off the fourth Hollow, the one which hadn’t tasted his Sōkatsui. “Lately, our systems tracked down several attacks from large packs of Hollows, all in this area.” He went on to purify the last enemy. Or so he thought. As the Shinigami’s blade slashed through the Hollow’s mask, a huge gate adorned with two terrifying skeletons whose skulls bore bandages filled with fuda appeared behind it. The four chains which were keeping it closed snapped violently letting its doors open and a gigantic, tattooed left hand pierced the feral spirit with a befittingly big katana, dragging it into the gate which subsequently shut closed.
“It’s a rather unusual behaviour. That’s why I was sent here.” Fubuki continued his explanation sheeting his Zampakutō and trying to conceal his tired breathing as the gate shattered disappearing into nothingness. “One of the guys we usually send to patrol wouldn’t be able to take down so many alone. But we can’t dispatch too many units, lest we compromise our secrecy and put our attempts at understanding what exactly is going on at risk.” Not to mention, manpower was as necessary as ever in Seireitei during that period.
"Ah...! It's... nothing!" Shiro stammered, shaking her head and hoping it was enough to dismiss any curiosity or pursuit into the matter the shinigami might take. "I would say it's more like... paying back a favor for someone I know, though I guess if they don't know I'm doing it it doesn't make much of a difference huh..." That's right this could be seen as a favor for when Mitsuoki helped her out. She didn't have to apologize for anything right? Shiro watched the Shinigami work. It was almost painful to watch really... not really the act of killing off the hollows itself but rather how painfully slowly they were being taken care of... But then was that what it meant to be strong? The efforts of those who actually needed to try their best just to accomplish the same level of work... She'd been like that once. Maybe even smaller. As a weak and powerless human. Shiro stuffed the thought to the back of her mind. Thinking about these things in that way was something she should avoid. It was like watching an anthill full of tiny ants and realizing that with a single shovel, one could dig a hundred times faster than a thousand ants together... Sure she was strong now but if she started to think about it like that she might start adopting arrogance, which she really didn't want to do.
And then the gate appeared...! "W-what is that thing!?" Shiro sounded more surprised than she actually was. This was her third time seeing it now since she'd started spending her nights helping to keep the streets clear of hollows. It was rare but when it'd first happened Shiro was afraid some great demon or monster was going to appear! But each time before, it'd done the same thing. Captivating, impaling, and taking with it one of the hollows she'd slain... It didn't really make any sense.
It was as she'd figured. The Seireitei didn't have the manpower to cover all of the planet simultaneously. From what she'd heard from Mitsuoki, The Seireitei was even in a sort of lock-down mode right now. Something to do with a conflict between the Shinigami and Quincy.
Fubuki rose an eyebrow, looking at Shiro-San’s surprised face. What was which thing, exactly? Then he realized: being aware of Shinigami and their job didn’t really mean knowing everything about how spiritual things work. So, she really was a simple Human after all? The Shinigami felt an increasing disappointment on his own skills: how could he be so utterly surpassed by someone who hadn’t even breathed for one tenth of the time he spent working so hard? He definitely needed to train more and get harder on himself.
“Oh, that?” He asked casually as soon as he stopped spacing out, making eye contact with the girl while pointing to the direction Jigoku no Mon had spawned from and subsequently disappeared to. “Nothing, just the Gates of Hell.” He explained keeping the same casual tone. For as rare an occurrence as it may be to witness, it was a perfectly normal part of life-and-death cycle to him. “Don’t worry, it’s just meant to take the souls of those who have been bad people in life and bring them where punishment awaits.” He waited a moment in silence to see if Shiro-San had any more questions on the matter.
“By the way, thanks for earlier.” He made this last comment quickly, averting his eyes. In the world, there really was little he hated more than getting help from others, but while the very reason he was sent there by himself was the Hollows who repeatedly attacked the city were weak enough for him to take care of them alone, Fubuki was fully aware of the fact the only way he had to purify all five before they could deal any significant damage to the city would have negatively involved every human in a significantly wide radius. So, he was sincerely grateful and thought it would be rude not to say anything.
“I think I should look for this phenomenon’s origin now.” Saying that, he hoped to change topic, but it brought to his mind: how was he supposed to proceed? The only lead Soul Society had were the Hollows themselves, but those didn’t give any sign of reason and needed to be taken out of the picture the moment they stepped into the Terrain World.
"The gates of hell? That's what you call nothing?" So that's what the monolithic structure that popped up was supposed to be? So wait... if it only showed up for those who deserved to go to hell but she'd only seen it twice before, didn't that mean that most of the hollows she'd defeated up until now had been innocent souls? But then it did make sense... She'd heard before that hollows were born of spirits who'd lingered too long within the human world. Just because they'd become hollows didn't necessarily make them guilty of any crimes in life...
"Don't mention it. I would say it's my job but it's really not... It is more of me just meddling isn't it..." Shiro nodded to his acknowledgement before falling into an apologetic stance. She didn't have their approval, hell Shiro wasn't even sure if she needed their approval to do what she'd been doing since it was all happening within the human world anyway... Either way this Shinigami, Fubuki, had acknowledged her right from the start. She wasn't sure if it was because of her overwhelming presence or perhaps the Shinigami's own personality but for the most part even when she had been spotted, none of the shinigami on patrol had actually chosen to approach Shiro willingly, let alone acknowledge her presence or assistance for that matter.
"Isn't this the source of the problem right here though?" Shiro asked, indicating the playground they were currently standing in. Maybe she didn't understand what he'd meant but Shiro had never really considered there to be a source for all of these seemingly random hollow appearances. Sure five at once wasn't really random but that didn't mean there was any specific reason for it was there?
Shiro-San’s reactions just kept getting Fubuki bewildered: what was so extraordinary about some portal taking the souls of people who deserved Hell? Things had always worked like that, hadn’t they? He wondered if the fact would have left him so surprised too when he acquired that knowledge, had he retained the memories from his terrain life. What caused him some intrigue, if not suspicion, was rather: who in the universe decided when it was that someone deserved Soul Society rather than Hell or vice-versa? Reio? The thought made him feel Shinigami like himself, high-and-mighty as they acted, weren’t but a vessel for the will of some supernatural being they weren’t even allowed to ascertain the existence of.
The Human’s first comment was left to itself, but the second needed a reply. Fubuki couldn’t do more than give some insight, but if that could give Shiro-San even the slightest help in setting her own duties and limitations, that surely would have worked for the better. For her and for the very Balance of Souls alike. “I wouldn’t say it’s meddling.” The black-robed warrior explained. “But neither it is your duty.” A little pause. He had to say more than he usually did. “You know how Shinigami’s Zanpakutō purify Hollows’ sins as they strike them down, don’t you?” He couldn’t really be sure, but he assumed so from the fact she merely stopped the Hollows rather than slaying them herself. She might just have been a Human with great Reiatsu and little combat abilities, but the chance was so slim he excluded it. And she did carry a katana, as well as one of those little ranged weapons he sometimes saw humans use against each other, after all.
“Well, the sins they committed after their physical death, that is.” He added to justify the existence of Jigoku no Mon, the function of which Shiro-San had just been exposed to. “That supports the balance between souls in the Terrain World, Hueco Mundo and Soul Society. If a soul is completely erased, as happens when a Human destroys it or a Hollow devours it, the balance is forcefully altered.” Another small pause to make sure she was following him. “For what it’s worth, I personally think you have all the rights to use your powers to their fullest when defending yourself from Hollows or other spiritual beings.” Balance had the priority to the Shinigami, but he saw it as pointless to throw one’s own life just to prevent a small damage to it. Besides, her soul being destroyed didn’t amount to any less than a Hollow’s.
“As for patrolling around urban centres as you claimed to do, well – You can’t just pray for a Shinigami to pop out at the right moment when needed. That’s just not realistic. As you can easily understand, for each Hollow you slay you destroy a soul, but at the same time prevent the souls of multiple humans from being devoured. In other words, you do more good than harm.” Sōtaichō-Sama probably would beg to differ, but such radical views already damaged Soul Society more than once.
At the end of his long, and probably already heard, explanation, Fubuki looked right into Shiro-San’s eyes. “It’s not something you have to do. But it does help. So, one would have to be out of their mind to call that ‘meddling’. The problem with Humans is when they deliberately go out hunting for Hollows to kill.” That’s why purging the Quincy was a necessary evil, in his view. Though he might be biased, as the event occurred shortly after his graduation from Shin’ōreitsuin and as such many of his early missions were related to it.
The Officer then followed the girl’s lead, heading back to the middle of the playground. “Here, you say?” He asked. Effectively, it was weird for the Hollows to spawn there rather than in the middle of a crowded area, but something was still off. “I don’t sense anything which could attract them, though.” He commented spinning a merry-go-round and inspecting below it in search for clues. “Do you?” The fact she could hide her presence so well didn’t necessarily imply she was also good at sensing Reiatsu, but the things usually go hand-in-hand.
It was good to have some official input from one of the people she believed herself to be assisting. He was right in that it wasn’t her duty to be going around dealing with the roaming hollow menace within the human world. But it was a relief to know that he also didn’t consider her actions to be meddlesome. Had he believed her to be meddling then she might have needed to consider what it was she did exactly which would deem her a meddler… Shiro nodded at Fubuki’s mention of the Zanpakutō and how it was used to purify hollows. Mitsuoki had explained this to her before. That the Shinigami were equipped with a method that did not include destroying a hollow along with its soul. She listened and found out something new. So the Shinigami’s were a type of forgiveness of sorts? But it seemed their effectiveness remained entirely within the events following after a person’s death. So that’s what this Hell Gate was about then. Which meant those souls that were captured by it belonged to a different class of sinner…
Shiro’s heart fell a little. So it wasn’t just Quincy then who destroyed the soul when they killed hollows but other humans as well? Did that also go for Fullbringers then? Perhaps patrolling with the intent of hunting hollows wasn’t for the best of intentions after all… She breathed a sigh of relief at Fubuki’s next statement however. She’d been hunting hollows down, sure, but killing them just because they were here had never been her game plan. If a hollow left well enough alone, Shiro had seen no reason to pursue and kill it. Iiname was one such hollow. She hadn’t seen him in a while now but the creature was a lively fellow, constantly wanting to learn and acting tougher than she figured he ought to.
So that was why Quincy were not appreciated then? It was solely due to the fact that they actively hunted and pursued Hollows that the Shinigami were in conflict with them over it? There were similarities in the explanation, but knowing her own efforts would still snuff out a soul was not a pleasant thought to have to be considering…
”Well… no… I don’t sense anything around here… Not anymore. I just thought that since so many Hollows appeared at once that it might have something to do with this area…” Shiro indicated, watching the Shinigami’s motions. It wasn’t unlikely that this area had something unique going on about it. The playground always seemed to be abuzz with Hollow activity late at night for reasons even Shiro hadn’t been able to figure out yet. It remained as one of few locations within the city where larger numbers of Hollow would appear despite there being no one around…
Fubuki nodded at Shiro-San’s response. As expected, nothing noteworthy lingered on the playground. If something escaped him, after all, it would have been weird for so many low-level Hollows to perceive it and approach en masse. Sure, there was still a chance for the bait to have been there only for a short while, maybe when the Shinigami was busy inspecting the human girl, but that would more than likely mean someone’s pulling the string from afar, which would have been his deduction even in case he had concrete proof nothing effectively attracted the Hollows there. Meanwhile, visually inspecting the area gave no additional results.
“I think I should get back and report.” Fubuki announced as he stopped checking the various pieces of recreational equipment or other places where tools could be hidden, slightly disappointed at the idea of giving off such poor results, possibly motivating Gotei 13 to have some of his colleagues join in the investigation. “But since I’m here, I might as well patrol the area, still searching for clues.” The night had fallen completely and the temperature had dropped compared to when the Officer first reached the park. Almost no human was still out.
Fubuki walked toward the clock tower, checking its base. He kneeled down at every corner and tried to take a good look from every possible point of view. The Shinigami even tried smelling the air around it. The first Hollow to show up was pretty close to that, after all. But nothing was found there, either. So, he just got further into the city, stopping to check his surroundings every few meters.
He seemed dismissive, perhaps a bit disappointed even, in the lack of actual results he must have expected. He didn't say it outright but Shiro suspected its what his words meant even as he continued on to begin a patrol. That too could be an indicator too, Shiro considered. If his original aim wasn't to patrol but to figure out if there was some connection behind this playground and the sudden increase in hollow appearances, then surely she thought he would have wanted to stick around the place and maybe investigate a bit more...
"Do you think there would be a reason behind increased Hollow appearances in specific areas?" Shiro asked, reappearing before him after observing his actions for a little longer even though he likely believed she'd gone another rout by now. In all honesty she was curious about this Shinigami. She didn't know many of his kind who would step out of their usual procedures and actually communicate with her normally, let alone even acknowledge her existence to begin with. Perhaps it was a positive sign? And maybe busting her way into Soul Society hadn't been the best idea or plan she'd ever executed, but maybe if she could find the right connections she might be able to earn herself a pass... At the very least she didn't want to be on the wrong side of an entire race of people just because they lived in entirely different worlds.

Fubuki kept searching the area to no avail. Maybe he should just have returned to report, after all. As soon as he resigned to the idea of heading back, a strong presence appeared before him. Whoever was behind all of that, maybe?
No, just Shiro-San with more questions. The Shinigami couldn’t even feel, much less see, her approaching. Hell, how he hated being as slow as he was. “We cannot be sure about that.” He answered. “But it is weird to see them acting so uniformly, isn’t it? Usually, each would just spawn by itself on a populated area whenever the hunger is too much to bear, especially those as animalistic as these.”
Fubuki didn’t mind explaining the situation to the Human. It was probably against the Gotei 13 protocol, and indeed a big gamble, as she could very well be behind the attacks. But unfortunately for the more conventional thinkers, he was the type to play along with the opponent’s plan, which made choices like that particularly easy when doubting if someone was ally or foe.
“Additionally, while Naruki has a big spiritual activity, this area of the city isn’t particularly populous in this period.” The Shinigami kept patrolling his surroundings as he spoke. “So, it would seem like someone is controlling these Hollows from behind. I was supposed to look for a dialogue and gather information from that, but as you could see yourself, your guests weren’t in the mood for a chat.”
Fubuki stopped and rose his head to look at nothing in particular, reflecting. “But what would anyone want from this place, especially attacking in such an easily detectable way?” It just didn’t seem to add up. Even if the Wandenreich wanted something, they have stealthier ways to gain it. If they just want to draw the Shinigami’s attention away from Seireitei, they should do something an Unseeded Officer or two wouldn’t be able to handle. Was there a new enemy to take care of in such a bad period?

”You would think they could just stick to their own world and find food…” Or so Shiro spoke her opinion but she knew better. At least in her experiences the parts of Hueco Mundo she most commonly saw were rather void of life. One would have a long search and a tough time finding food in such an expansive wasteland… Maybe that was the inherent problem then? Lack of food and then finding food that you’d have no choice but to fight against. Perhaps they just targeted the human world because it was easy to pick and choose a meal… ”Like a lion with a sore tooth?” Shiro mumbled to herself. But it did make sense, at least for hollows that seemed to appear most often around this place. The vast majority of them were pretty minor when it came to their overall strength so perhaps there was actually something? Maybe a stronger force driving weaker hollows to desperation?
“A bigger force might be involved? How can you be sure it’s in control though? Couldn’t this just be happening because there’s a stronger Hollow on the other side rampaging and forcing weaker ones to come here instead of hunting for their meals around Hueco Mundo for fear of their own safety?” Shiro spoke, deciding to put forth her thoughts on the matter. Hollows were creatures too. Granted their inherent being and how they acted was completely different to normal creatures, but then couldn’t all creatures be capable of bizarre behavior if pushed too far in the wrong direction?

“Well, they’re not cannibals. Not the ones which showed up tonight.” Fubuki commented in return to Shiro-San’s first thoughts, making use of the fact their opponents that night were all fairly weak, nowhere near a Gillian in terms of power and as such hunger, to dismiss them as ‘non-cannibals’. “The Reishi present in Hueco Mundo, ‘their own world’ as you put it, are not enough for most, and they don’t have an equivalent for animals.”
The Shinigami reflected at the Human’s following words. He hadn’t considered the possibility of some being strong enough to pull so many Hollows away from Hueco Mundo, thus increasing their activity in the Terrain World without directly controlling them. The high Spiritual Activity in Naruki also made it a good target for them, although it still was weird how they all seemed to prefer that spot.
“An anomaly in Garganta?” He reflected out loud, something which rarely occurred. That was the first link he could think of, but he knew very little of the Hollows’ means to travel between worlds.
And as he reflected, a sixth Hollow appeared a few meters away from the two, a sort of Centaur-like creature, except its legs were as tall as a person and its mask was akin to a horse’s face, matching the lower side of its body rather than the upper one.
Excusing himself once again, Fubuki approached the creature in a Shunpo and cut off one of its forelegs with a iaido. Then came a slash to the other foreleg, which forced the Hollow to lean down, putting its mask within the Officer’s reach for another, final slash.
The Unseeded returned to Shiro-San sheathing his katana once again. “Should the ‘controller’ theory be correct, this one must’ve gotten lost on the way.” He hadn’t discarded his original suspicions yet, as the outlier could be a Hollow genuinely getting to its hunting territory, but he was seriously considering the girl’s point of view.
