An eerie darkness fell over the funeral home. Even the streetlamps in the parking lot of the establishment seemed to grow dim with the Hollow’s approach. Averibus passed through the locked doors of the home, her spiritual body unhindered by the physical conditions of the mortal realm in which she resided. She was an elusive, seductive and sinister creature, one of only a handful of Hollows who could manage to go undetected beneath Soul Society’s radar.
”My, how sweet. They’ve even prettied up your poor little dead body just for me.” Averibus cooed at the soulless corpse of her earlier victim, caressing the sixteen year old child’s corpse with an unusually human hand. Long straight black hair fell between the sinister Hollow’s caress as Averibus dispersed her form into a flow of essence, entering the corpse through its oral capillaries. Brown eyes opened, taking in the new view. Averibus reached up to the side of the prepared coffin with both hands and pulled her newly possessed corpse into a sitting position. ”Oh this will do quite nicely.” Averibus formed a twisted smile upon the corpse’s face.
Walking her newfound physical body to the funeral home’s entrance, Averibus unlocked the doors and pushed them open with cold human hands.
Getting the same Shinigami to keep taking her to the human world had been a surprisingly easy task to accomplish. Though he’d refused at first when Akane intercepted him back in Soul Society and demanded he keep taking her, he quickly buckled under the pressure of her threats to tell Mitsuoki if he refused. Of course she would never actually tell Mitsuoki about her little sneak adventures into the human world but what the Shinigami didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.
The day was sunny and strangely warm but it was all the better for Akane. She didn’t much like the cold unless there happened to be plenty of fresh white snow to play in. It also meant she didn’t need to bundle up in thick clothes which was always a plus since being bundled did make it harder for her to move around.
Akane set her sights on the restaurant from before but changed her mind along the way when a delicious smelling aroma caught her interest. Following the smell led the hungry girl to a pizzeria and she quickly decided this would be her target of the day. She didn’t even bother to notice the confused concern on the host’s face when she demanded a table for one.
Pepperoni, Sausage, Pineapple, Pepper… Akane looked over the different pizza options, her eyes falling to the toppings section of the menu. Could she really put any toping she wanted onto her Pizza for just 150¥…? Whatever ¥ was… Seemed like code for something but the girl wasn’t really sure what it meant. Looking back to the pizza section she located something else and decided she wanted it.
“Are you ready to place your order?” The waitress asked. Like the host she too was a little concerned by the fact that a child had demanded seating. Did she even have the means to pay for what she’d get?
”Yes! I want the Everything Special please!” Akane exclaimed, moving the menu so the waitress could see before jabbing a finger at the picture of what she wanted.
“And what would you like to drink?”
”Mmm… Orange!” Akane scanned the menu again pointing out the orange looking beverage when she couldn’t find the juice option she’d seen at the other restaurant.
“Alright I’ll put your order in. It will be about twenty five minutes.” The waitress stated, taking the menu with her as she left.
Twenty five minutes seemed like a long time to have to wait but Akane’s stomach grumbled in response to her concerns. She could wait if it meant answering the monster in her belly.
Akane’s pizza arrived piping hot and ready to eat. Diving right in proved to be a bad idea as the first bite sent Akane scrambling for the provided drink to alleviate the burning in her mouth. Which was subsequently replaced by an odd tingly sensation as the carbonated bubbles made their way up Akane’s nose, causing the girl to cough. She glared at the pizza and the drink. The pizza was way too hot and the drink was attacking her in weird ways... Maybe this hadn’t been the right place to eat, but she couldn’t deny how amazing this way-too-hot pizza smelled. She opted to give it some time and try eating it in a few moments after it’d had some time to cool down.
Akane’s attention momentarily shifted from her food and drink to a man sitting at a table next to hers. Something he had was making a strange noise, though it stopped when he pulled a device out of his pocket. It resembled something Shiro had, a Cellphone was it?
“What do you mean the body’s not there?” The man yelled into his cellphone. Akane shied back to face her pizza but her extraordinary animal features manifested and she continued listening to the man’s conversation.
“She was supposed to be dressed and prepared for the mourning today at one! What do you mean you can’t find her! This is outrageous! What kind of sick person would steal a body from the funeral home!?”
A body? Like, as in a non-living human? Was he talking about a person? Akane’s foxlike ears strained to hear more of the conversation to help piece together what little she could from the man’s distressed behavior. A few of the grossly concerned faces around the restaurant drew reassured breaths and sat back into their seats after realizing the man apparently worked with one of the city’s Funeral homes. So weird. To think people would do stuff with a body… Even Mitsuoki didn’t leave bodies lying around. She’d heard plenty about Mitsuoki’s companions from Kouta, the ones represented by the stone monument he’d apparently built as a memorial to them having lost their lives some time before her own existence became realized. She watched as the man cursed, hastily paid for his meal and then left, peeling out of the restaurant’s parking lot in his vehicle. Poking her pizza Akane deemed it to be cool enough to actually eat now and pulled a cheese layered piece off the platter.
”Excuse me, may I sit here?” A strangely sweet voice drew Akane’s attention to a girl standing next to her table. Her long black hair was straight and easily fell down to her waist. Dark brown eyes made contact with Akane’s own sapphire blue hues and the fox-girl paused for a moment, a half-eaten piece of pizza still in her hands. The new arrival seemed well groomed and the formal black attire was quite fancy looking despite the relatively laid back design of the pizzeria. Gulping down what pizza she had in her mouth, Akane moved to make room for the mysterious girl, confused and trying to figure out if she knew this person or not.
”Thank you.” The girl politely bowed and took a seat on the bench opposite the table to Akane.
”You can’t have any of my pizza!” Akane stated defensively.
”That’s alright. I’m not really hungry anyway.” The strange girl smiled, giving a small laugh as she assured Akane that her pizza was safe. Even so Akane ate cautiously, keeping an eye on the girl in case she decided to change her mind. Something about this person seemed off to Akane and it wasn’t just the strange way in which she dressed either.
”You have such cute ears.” The girl stated with a smile, resting her head in her hands.
Akane cupped her hands over her ears, giving the girl a confused look. Cute ears? What was cute about human ears anyway?
”No. Not those ones silly. These ears.” The black haired girl reached up to her head and made floppy motions with her hands to indicate the ears on top of Akane’s head. The manifestation of her fox ears…
”You can see my ears!?” Akane’s jaw dropped and her eyes widened in surprise. And here she had thought the only living human who could actually see her fox ears was Shiro! To think there was actually someone else around who could see her spiritual form! Akane wasn’t even bothered by the strange looks she got from nearby customers inside the restaurant. The statement and Akane reaching up to fox ears that none of them could see was a very strange thing to see for those who couldn’t see beyond the physical realm of existence.
”And you have a big fluffy tail too. I have to admit you look so adorable I feel like I could just eat you up right now.” The visiting girl gave Akane an innocent looking smile, taking in the girl’s physical, and spiritual appearance.
Strange girl, strange words. Akane didn’t understand. She seemed friendly enough and the strange girl was being nice and not eating her pizza like she’d said she wouldn’t. Taking a careful drink from her drink, Akane gulped down some of the bubbly orange flavored liquid. It was so much different than the juice she’d had at the other restaurant but it tasted strangely delicious. Just like this girl before her. She looked nice, dressed nice, she even acted nice… But something felt… odd. Akane couldn’t quite place it. It was like she was looking at the human manifestation of… something? But what? ”My name’s Akane, what’s yours?” She asked. She wouldn’t make the same mistake she had with the ghost boy in the park. Even now she hadn’t been able to find him… Rokungai was a large place and searching for one person among all of those pluses was a task in its own. And she still didn’t even know the boy’s name!
”You can call me Mary Sue.” The girl replied after a short pause, as if thinking and contemplating whether she should answer Akane’s question.
”Is it Mary or Sue?” Akane asked, tilting her head in confusion.
”Mary Sue would be one name.” The girl chuckled.
Akane tilted her head to the other side, trying to figure it out. Why did the girl have two first names?
Not having much to talk about with the newcomer, Akane focused on her pizza which she was beginning to realize was a bit much even for her usually ravenous appetite. ”Want some?” Akane held up a slice and offered, going back on her earlier defiance in letting the mystery girl eat her pizza.
”No thanks. I’m not in the mood for pizza.” Mary Sue raised the palm of her hand to politely refuse.
”You’re not hungry?” Akane once again found herself tilting her head in confusion. Why had she come into a pizza place if she wasn’t hungry for pizza?
”Oh no. I am hungry, just not for pizza.”
”What are you hungry for then?” Akane asked, now slightly curious what it was Mary Sue was hungry for. A string of cheese dripped off the slice she held and landed on her plate.
”Want to come with me and find out?” Mary Sue asked, her voice brimming with unusually high levels of enthusiasm.
”Nh!” Akane nodded eagerly, her mouth filled. She’d dared another bite of pizza before officially calling it quits.
”Then if you’re finished you should come with me. I’ll show you what I want to eat instead of pizza.”
Akane followed Mary Sue out of the restaurant and the two of them headed down the street. Where would they end up? Akane didn’t know but she was curious enough to find out. Maybe if it was a place with food as delicious as the pizzeria or the other restaurant Mitsuoki and Shiro had brought her to before then she might consider paying the place a visit on one of her next trips to the human world.
”Do they have ice-cream? I really want some ice-cream!” Akane danced around Mary Sue enthusiastically.
”Oh yes. They have lots of flavors to pick from.” Mary’s tone betrayed a subtle sarcasm that Akane was too distracted to pick up on.
”Yes! I wanna try the Superman ice-cream if they have it!” Pumping her fists in the air, Akane made another excited loop around Mary.
Unexpectedly bumping into Mary, Akane recoiled and fell onto her butt. ”Ow… Are we there?” Rubbing her nose and feeling the sting of pavement under her rear, Akane looked up to behold… A place that was obviously not a restaurant or other place where one could get food. Mary stood before an area seemingly devoid of others. Bordered by metal bars and stone pillars and sporting a number of thick and aged trees dotting the otherwise clear area. The size and spread of each tree’s branches cast a dark and uninterrupted shadow across the entire area. Underneath the trees within the fenced off area Akane could see what looked like stone slabs sticking out of the ground in rows going up and down in even rows across the place. ”What is this place…?” Akane muttered with uncertainty, a foreboding chill running up her spine.
”This is a graveyard.” Mary stated bluntly, turning to face Akane.
Yeah okay it was a graveyard… But why were they here? Akane’s fox ears twitched. This really felt weird all of a sudden… Like they were in a place where they shouldn’t be. “But I thought we were going to get food?” Akane’s earlier enthusiasm now being dwarfed by an increasingly prevalent sensation of dread.
”It’s a wonderful place to eat in private when you don’t want to be disturbed.” Mary grinned, leaning down to meet Akane face to face.
Creepy. This was all too strange and creepy. This girl suddenly felt very disturbing to Akane. ”I don’t think I want ice-cream anymore. I… should go…” Backing up on all fours while still in a sitting position, Akane moved to distance herself from the girl before turning around and jumping up to run away. An action that might have been successful had one of Mary’s hands not grabbed her wrist. The feeling of dread rushed across Akane’s very existence and she yelped in surprise at how icy cold Mary’s hand was. Deathly cold! It was way to warm out for someone to be as cold as Mary was. ”Let me go!” Akane turned to face Mary, pressing her free hand against Mary’s own hand in an attempt to pry herself free from the icy grip.
Akane rolled and up righted herself as quickly as she could manage, crashing into one of the cemetery’s many tombstones. There was something very wrong about Mary’s presence now. It didn’t feel like before, less human now than at the restaurant and far more… What was this thing!? Akane leapt up in the air when the ground beneath her feet began shifting and gave way. The smell of rot and death assaulted the girl’s senses and she beheld a human corpse lifting itself out of the ground.
”I’ve had my eyes on you for a while now girl. It’s not too often I get to enjoy the flesh of a human that’s been wrapped up and entangled within the energies of a Shinigami! I shall enjoy consuming your soul and taking your flesh for my own!” Averibus cackled, her voice reverberating throughout the cemetery now that she’d chosen to abandon her human corpse.
The oddly animated corpse aside, Akane’s face grew deathly pale at the sight of Averibus. Not human at all! Mary Sue was a Hollow!! Averibus’ body looked like a nightmarish and elongated crab but where one would expect a normal crablike mouth, was instead a wide gaping maw filled with razor teeth and an enormous lashing tongue. Atop the supposed head protruded an oddly human shape resembling an attractive woman from the waist up yet it was covered in a bony armor plating, the hollow’s own mask imbued with several large curving horns covered the humanoid visage where one would normally see a face.
Akane couldn’t find words. Her legs refused to listen to her. She’d never seen nor felt anything as frightening as this before. But she had to act. Had to think of how to get out of this situation, how to get away.
The bottle cap! She wasn’t sure why she thought about it just then but… Akane reached into the pocket of her shorts and drew forth the old bottle cap she’d retrieved from Greig’s shop. What exactly it was that compelled Akane to throw it at the hollow? She didn’t know. Maybe it was how desperate and hopeless her current situation felt. But she threw the cap. In that moment something very peculiar happened… Under the shade of the graveyard trees, lamps that’d been turned on to provide some light within the shade immediately went out, casting the middle of the graveyard into a mysterious darkness. Akane wanted out of this frightening and terrifying situation and she subconsciously started wishing someone was here to help her. The bottle cap landed and from it poured forth a cloud of oddly shaped shadows.
”What is this!?” Averibus hissed, attempting to shield herself from the fox-like shades that’d sprung forth from the girl’s trinket. Akane couldn’t see the hollow through the darkness and she didn’t want to see it. Everything about her was terrifying and Akane had no intentions of becoming a Hollow’s lunch! She ran, Averibus’ summoned corpse made an attempt to catch the girl but she avoided getting caught by its decayed reach. She broke free of the shadows, dashed to the edge of the graveyard and scaled over the wall of the cemetery before making a break for a more populated area of the city. Akane didn’t stop running until she had located the city’s local Shinigami patrol.
“I don’t see any Hollows here.” The Shinigami stated matter of fact. He would have added in an irritated tone if it hadn’t been for the state of shaken fright Akane was in.
”B-but there was one here! I know there was!” Akane stuttered, daring to look past him and into the graveyard. The strange shadows from her bottle cap earlier were gone and the cemetery’s lighting seemed to be working normally now. It didn’t make any sense… This was all too strange and frightening for it to have all been her imagination. Akane shuddered at a chill that ran down her spine. She could still feel the icy cold touch of the Hollow’s grip on her arm. The girl didn’t want to admit that maybe everything had been in her head but shortly after she’d found and informed the Shinigami about it she’d noticed the bottle cap, still in her pocket. ”It was real! I’m sure of it!” Akane’s voice shook with growing uncertainty but according to the Shinigami there were no signs of a Hollow having been here. Not even a residual presence. The ground that’d been disturbed by the rotting corpse she’d described, untouched… Akane shook her head. Confusion took over her emotions and she fell to her knees trying to figure out if maybe she had just dreamed it all up. But she couldn’t remember having fallen asleep…
“Maybe I should take you home now…” The Shinigami suggested.
”…Okay.” Akane agreed, lost to the reality of a situation and mix of emotions she could no longer understand.
