The metal boxes which roared like nothing else she’d ever experienced kept going back and forth. It’d been some time since Akane had been here last but she’d come to learn that the metal objects flying by on the hardened black ground with people in them were called cars. Or trucks… or vans… ”Cars.” She voiced the word to herself, deciding to officially call them all by the same name. What was the point of giving similar objects different names anyway? All it did was make things super confusing. Huffing a sigh Akane tucked up her knees and rested her arms on them while staring across the street wondering how she was going to get over there… The there in question being the apparel store she’d once called home, back when she’d been a complete and total fox. Mitsuoki was on duty right now so he’d left her with the village kids as usual but in the middle of playing Akane suddenly remembered something she’d previously forgotten.
Getting back to the Human World without his help had been unexpectedly easy. She snuck into one of the many gotei barracks and caught a newbie making the switch to go out on patrol. Disguising herself as part of his supplies he’d picked her up without second guessing why he suddenly had an extra pack and set off to head to the Human World. Finding the right moment to break away from the unknowing Shinigami had been pretty easy to do as well.

Instead of focusing on the store itself, Akane started watching the cars go by instead. People walked by, some alone, some with others. Groups of people even, and while some took notice of the unusually young girl sitting on a street bench by herself, none of them bothered to ask her if she was lost or needed help. It was probably because she didn’t appear to be worried or actually lost. She knew exactly where she wanted to go, the only problem was how to actually get there from where she was currently. She watched a dark green sedan pass by but lifted her head in curiosity when she noticed it was slowing down… and stopping? Upon closer inspection it seemed like all the cars were doing something similar almost as if following a pattern but the most interesting part about the whole thing was that the people walking on the sidewalk would wait for the cars to stop and then pass in front of them to the other side! She was about to hop down and make her way across that same section of the road when she noticed the cars start moving again. Pouting, Akane pulled herself back up onto the bench but kept her eyes glued to the spot where the cars seemed to be stopping regularly.

That had to be it. After several more minutes of observing the patterned behavior of the cars, Akane determined that they were somehow listening to the weird lights on poles. When the light was green the cars would go. When the light was yellow the cars would slow down or stop and sometimes speed up. But when the light was red the cars would always stop. Hopping down from the bench Akane made her way to the street corner where the changing lights were. She knew enough from observation now to realize that they seemed to be holding to some sort of a pattern. The light facing the cars was green now but it would soon turn yellow and then red. That would be her opportunity to get across the road and secure safe passage over to the apparel shop.
She was right and soon the light turned yellow then red and to the surprised alarm of other pedestrians Akane dashed across the street once all the cars were stopped. This was it! She would finally get back to the store and retrieve what she’d come for, but she hesitated at the opened door of the shop. Before when she’d decided to make this place her home, the people in the store started closing the door on Akane, forcing her to find alternative methods of entry. But the door was wide open again and while it seemed inviting, the girl wasn’t entirely certain… She ducked behind the doorframe and with a single hand reached out and waved. No boots, no hands seeking to grab her up and take her away from the store. Akane dared to take a peek inside.

The one main concern was the person behind the counter. Akane recognized him to be the one who used to always chase her out whenever she’d previously tried to get inside out of the cold or the rain or other types of dreadful weather. He was smiling at a lady customer while putting whatever it was she was purchasing into a bag. Instinctively lowered herself to all fours, though by now it was more of a dying impulse as Mitsuoki had ingrained into her the fact that humans could run faster on two legs. Akane released her human powers. It wasn’t an explosive release like Shiro’s, rather it merely consisted of a simple pop and swish as her foxlike ears and tail appeared. Spiritual extensions of her soul and something normal humans couldn’t even see. Akane scurried into the shop, keeping low and on all fours. It was fairly awkward to move like she used to with her now human body but she wanted to stay as low to the ground as possible to avoid being seen by the counter-man. It didn’t occur to the girl that her odd method of entry didn’t just guarantee that the store owner saw her enter the store but also made him wonder why the kid was acting so ridiculously silly.

Ducking behind one of the many rows of shelving, Akane got back up on her normal two feet. She peeked around the corner to make certain she hadn’t been spotted. And ducked back around the corner with lightning-like reflexes, her heart racing. The store owner had been staring right at her! Cautiously she peeked out again but this time the owner seemed to be occupied with someone else and wasn’t looking in her direction. ”Just my imagination…?” Akane huffed a quieted sigh of relief. She hadn’t been caught, that was good.
Dropping to her knees Akane lowered her head down to the floor. The shelves stood a few inches above the ground with a gap between the floor and their first shelves. It felt a little strange to Akane when she recalled how she used to be able to scuttle around underneath these shelves without issue every day whenever she needed to avoid getting caught be the owner… Now she could barely get both eyes low enough to see underneath them… ”It’s not here.” Akane puffed, noticing the dustless bare floor underneath the shelf. But then maybe she’d left it under one of the other shelves. It just meant she would have to comb the store until she found it.

Dipping around to another set of shelves, Akane held her head low to the ground trying to locate her lost item. “I swear, kids these days…” A woman voiced her snooty opinion, having observed Akane’s less than delicate ground hugging behavior.
”Bleh!” Akane looked up at the woman and stuck out her tongue.
“Well I never!” The woman squeaked in annoyance, turning her back to Akane before walking away.
”Funny lady…” Akane stared after the woman until she turned and disappeared down another aisle. “Where is it?” she then whined, returning to her search of the floor under the shelves in an effort to spot the missing item. She was starting to worry that maybe the store owner had found it. If that was the case she dreaded to think he might have thrown it away. All of the floors under these shelves were spotless Akane noticed… cleaner than she remembered them being.
“Can I help you find something?” Akane heard the voice and froze. She knew that voice! Who it belonged to. The girl’s face left the floor as she sat back on her feet and looked to the one who’d spoken to her. The owner stared down at her, a less than humored expression plastered across his face. His arms were crossed over his chest, but despite his posturing he didn’t appear to have any air of impatience about him. ”I lost something and I’m looking for it.” Akane stated matter of fact when he didn’t immediately reach down and try to grab her. It felt really odd to be talking to him. The first time she’d spoken to the man, she hadn’t even been able to form human words. She remembered trying to utter the best growl she could muster the first time he’d caught her sneaking around and hiding under the shelving.

“Are you sure it’s something you lost in the store? I don’t remember seeing you here before…” The man questioned, confusion replacing his earlier expression.
”Mhm! I lost it here! I remember!” Akane nodded vigorously. She was certain she’d lost it here. She hadn’t taken it anywhere but to the store when she’d originally first found it.
“I see… well do you remember what it looked like? Maybe I can help you look for it.” The man offered, letting his arms fall to his sides.
He wanted to help her? Was he serious? Akane crooked her head to the side trying to figure out if she was imagining things. He’d never tried to help her before. Heck she had to fight against him almost every day before just for entry into the store itself… But he wanted to help now? Was it maybe because she was human like him now? ”Its round. Like this big. Oh! But it’s bumpy on the sides kind of like this!” Akane motioned with her hands, first making a haphazard circle with her fingers and then writing little squiggles in the air when she explained about it being bumpy.
“I see…” The man seemed confused. As far as he could figure the girl didn’t really know what it was she was looking for. “Well I’ll see what I can do to help I guess.”

”Thank you mister!” Akane gave the man a big toothy grin before returning to her floor search once again.
The man sighed. He liked kids, honestly he did but… “Something round and bumpy…?” Some balls were round and bumpy but he hadn’t seen anything like that laying around when he’d taken the time to thoroughly clean the store the other day. Wracking his brain he couldn’t think of anything he might have picked up that even remotely fit that description…
Akane made her way to the furthest shelves and eventually bumped into a second door at the back of the store. Standing she looked up at it. She could open doors now but she’d never gone in there even in her previous form so the likelihood of what she’d lost being in there was virtually impossible. ”Em… plo… ees. Ohn lee…?” Akane read the words, her head tilting to the side out of confusion and a lack of proper understanding. Her reading was coming along ever since Mitsuoki’s lessons for her had started… Slowly but she was definitely developing an ability to read words. ”What is employees only?” She asked no one in particular. The owner obviously hadn’t heard her and she simply shrugged. It wasn’t a place she expected to find her lost item in anyway.

Now that she wasn’t sitting eye level with the floor, Akane noticed that the shelves she’d been looking under had a lot of colorful things sitting on them. Most of the items were soft and fluffy and they fairly completely stole the girl’s interest. They were clothes? She compared a stack of pink colored cloth on the shelf to the clothing she herself wore. The textures were different but the designs looked similar. Pulling one of the pink things off the shelf she unfolded and noticed it had the same general shape as the shirt she wore. Stuffing the shirt disorderly back onto the shelf Akane’s eyes caught other items of note. Pulling off a dark blue one revealed a pair of pants that were far too long for her to wear. It was soft and felt cushioned. Pulling on the edges where it would normally fit around her waist Akane found the material to be quite stretchy too. It was weird. As a fox she’d never been concerned with the stuff on the shelf because none of it had ever been edible. She still failed to understand the true importance of wearing clothing but Mitsuoki and many of the people she met in Soul Society stated that it was right and proper to wear clothes.

Giving the pants another good tug at the waist, Akane put them back in as disorderly a fashion as the first things she’d taken off the shelves. She understood the basic merits of wearing the stuff but blankets were by far her favorite. Browsing around the shelves for a while she eventually found one isle that did in fact have blankets. Some were coarse, some were fluffy and downy. Come to think of it she had found this isle before. She’d enjoyed the warmth of the blankets one night after hiding away inside the store long enough to avoid detection. It’d been the most comfortable night she’d ever spent in the store but the resulting and all too immediate discharge in the morning very quickly taught her that it was not a good spot to sleep if she wanted to remain in the store during the mornings… Akane looked around the shelf towards the front of the store and pouted. The man said he would help but he was back behind his counter with another person. Whatever, she didn’t need help looking for her missing item anyway. She’d been surprised at his offer to help but it made more sense this way. The man had never been particularly warm towards her as a fox, she hardly expected him to treat her any different now that she was human.

Picking out a yellow blanket that was particularly fluffy and warm, Akane wrapped it around her shoulders and continued down the aisle to browse the shelves.
”I can’t find it anywhere.” Akane hung her head and pouted to the store owner. She’d looked everywhere. Underneath every shelf combing the entire floor. She’d even started looking on the shelves themselves but to no avail. The object of her desire just wasn’t to be found.
”Do you remember what color it was? Maybe a design that it might have had on it?” The man asked. He honestly wanted to help the girl find whatever it was she’d lost but with her vague description earlier he really wasn’t sure what to even begin looking for.
”It was orange colored and smooth on the top… bumpy on the sides and…” Akane paused trying to find the right words to describe the rest of the object. “It had a dent in the middle, like a cup!” Akane did her best to indicate her description using her hands.
“Ah… right okay…” The more the girl described it the more confused he felt about what type of object or toy it could even be she was looking for. He noted the blanket she now held around her shoulders but decided not to mention it to her. The girl didn’t seem like she was going to up and run out with it and he could catch her easily enough if she did so he wasn’t particularly concerned about it at the moment.

Maybe it really had become lost forever. Either way Akane didn’t have forever to spend looking. Mitsuoki would be off duty sooner or later and she didn’t want to get in trouble for making an unauthorized visit to the human world without his knowledge or permission. She pouted, kicking the counter and turned to leave but something at the door caught her eye. It was a large clear box with several rows of slender colored objects perfectly lined up next to each other. Rushing over to it she placed her hands on the glass and stared inside with surprise. Though the glass was cold to the touch, Akane immediately recognized the object she’d been looking for. ”It’s there! It’s right there!” Akane shouted to the store owner, excitement filling her voice as she quickly figured out how to open the glass box. Pulling one of the orange bottles down Akane juggled the unusually cold glass between her hands and ran back to the counter where the man waited with a now pleasantly amused expression on his face. ”This is what I’ve been looking for! I found it!” She held up the glass bottle of Orange soda, clearly showing the man its bright orange metal cap.

“The orange soda or the bottle cap?” The man laughed she let him take the bottle. Twisting off the top and handing them both back to the girl it all made sense now. Apparently what she’d lost had been her bottle cap. His store had been in need of a deep clean for some time and he’d finally found some time to get it done. Among the trash he’d found on the floor had been an old orange bottle cap. The thing was so beaten up and with plenty of bite marks all over it he figured it’d likely been brought in by the little fox cub he’d been having troubles with. But thanks to a considerate couple who’d helped him capture and take the critter away he hadn’t seen or heard the little bugger ever since. He doubted it was the same one but if it was then this girl was probably better off with the new one anyway.
”Can I keep it?” Akane asked lifting up an end of the blanket she carried with the hand that held the bottle cap.
“Keep? The blanket?” He contemplated the thought for a moment. Actually there were a lot of things he ought to be asking a kid who’d wandered into his store alone. Like where her parents were for example… “I suppose. Why not.” He answered but only after looking around the store to make sure he didn’t have any other customers who might overhear his rare moment of generosity. “By the way, what’s your name kid?”
”My name? It’s Akane. What’s your name mister?”
“You can call me Grieg”
” Thanks for the blanket Grieg!” Akane returned with a smile.
