[1]All around the world, select people walk into private rooms, make themselves comfortable and turn on the TV. These TVs are adorned with intricate symbols and every single one comes with a unique antennae coming off the back. Today, the symbols are glowing green, the owners know this to indicate the stream is active. One would imagine at this point every viewer cackling maniacally and settling down for the show to begin. As if it sensed the viewer, the TV crackles on, showing a midnight blue backdrop that parts to reveal a man sitting facing the camera.
“Welcome to Lucy Live! The show where you decide the mayhem! You decide the outcome! You create death! Our hero is unaware of her situation, guaranteeing that her reactions are genuine. The stage is real, the people are real, the monsters are real! Now, lets see what trouble we can get into.”
With a slimy car salesmen smile, the screens flicker to show a dark alleyway...
Lucy woke with a start and immediately started rubbing her sore neck, hitting the brick wall of the alleyway and coming away with flecks of dried blood under her nails. Barely phased, she wipes her hands on her dress, takes a second to breath then taps the floor[2]. She shoots up into the air and lands on her feet, taking in the alley and reorienting herself to...her eyes narrowed slightly as she realized she had no idea how she got here. Yesterday she was...what day was it...the bright blue sky cast shadows from the east telling her it was the morning. Though where she learnt that she did not recall. She knew her name, she knew her powers, she knew...he was watching. They were watching. She did not know who they were but she could feel them, she could almost remember them. This was not the first time she had forgotten, not that she could remember forgetting before.
She shook her head, these thoughts were distractions, cast them from her mind, go for a walk. The voice in her head did not sound like her, but it felt natural, like it had always been there for as long as she couldn’t remember. It made sense, get out of the alleyway, it’s dark down here and no one can see anything. Her senses widened and she focused on hearing, voices and the bustle of the city was all around her but stronger from the left. So the left is where she went.
The closer she got to the busy street the further inside of herself she drew, her right arm going up to grasp her left and her head hanging low already. Despite the dark power that bubbled inside of her she was afraid of them, not afraid of what they could do or what they could say. She simply did not understand them, how they moved, how they acted, how they treated each other and her. She just knew they did not like her.
The alley opened up into a market street, people of all ages and ethnicities told her this was a touristy area. Somehow she knew the voice wanted it to be so. As she passed through the crowd, eyes flicked to her, excuses were muttered and a path was carved wide enough for her to theoretically swing her arms and hit no one but her friends. The eyes that skimmed her seemed nervous, a look she was perplexingly used to for someone who could remember nothing. The voice in her head told her to remain calm and look around, look at the people, the children laughing, the band singing between two fruit stalls. The cacophony of sounds was almost too much for her, but the voice kept her walking, the voice kept her there. As she drew nearer to the end of the street where it opened up into a small park, her eyes flickered for a second…
“Ladies and Gentlemen, our stage is set. Our valiant hero is in place, look at the innocence in that child's eyes, or the love in his parents. Remember how this peaceful market looks my friends, for soon that all changes. As you all know, this is a pay-per-view event, if you wish to set the bar for what follows, send through your payments now. And remember! The more you pay, the bigger the fight!”
Lucy stumbled sideways into a stall, the owner opening his mouth to yell and closing it just as quickly, instead choosing to let her regain her own feet. Her head felt fuzzy, like the link to her thought process had been cut off but now it was back. Families around her pulled their children closer and she got the message swiftly, moving staggered towards the park. Inside the park were more children, an old couple and a man sitting on the bench. She was very aware suddenly of how nice a day it was, the voice in her head telling her to appreciate where she was. Take it all in. She looked at the flowers, then looked back at the market, panning slowly from one side to the other. Worried and concerned faces seemed to watch her from every angle. “Very good”, the voice said. “Now...scream”. So she did.
Then everything exploded, and something roared behind her.
Techniques used:
[1] Name: Kirami's Curse Class: Plot Tier: I Type: Passive Range: Self Description: This curse was concocted in the darkest depths of Kirami's labratory, and has a multitude of effects:
- Allows Kirami to hear and see as Lucy does. - Compels her to return to him once a month for renewal. - Creates a strange spiritual energy around her that envokes a sense of unnease and distrust around herself and others. -Allows Kirami to read her surface thoughts and communicate telepathically.
Special tattoos adorn Lucy's collarbones that focus and maintain this curse.
[2] Name: Be gone Class: Hand to Hand Tier: II Type: Offensive/Supplementary Range: Self-50m Description: On contact Lucy can propel anything at up to bala speed in the opposite direction she is touching it (combat capped at 50m -/+ 10m per advantage). If the target cannot be moved or when Lucy chooses, she is propelled instead, but retains full control and does not suffer impact damage. Projectiles are embued with T2 damage subjective to the nature of the projectile; knives=sharp, rocks=blunt etc. (This can be used progressivly and is subjective to each situation. Cannot be used on herself such as stamping on her own foot in the air to double jump.)
Being human there were definite limitations to what Shiro could do without being blatantly noticed by the people around her. For one, using her Katana was probably a bad idea in most situations. But strangely the use of her more spiritual abilities allowed for quite a bit more leeway in terms of risking exposure. She'd become increasingly conscious of the malicious spirits, or Hollow as she'd come to know them, and just how often they actually showed up in the human world. It was quite surprising actually and after witnessing the sheer lack of actually available Shinigami, she'd decided it wouldn't hurt to spend some time of her own patrolling areas where the reapers weren't by keeping an eye out for potential threats.
She stared down the Hollow before her, it's trailing snakelike body floating in between buildings as it attempted to retreat. She'd intercepted it's advances against a spirit. Yeah a humanoid spirit. It seemed like Hollows, especially weaker ones still preferred other spiritual beings or spiritually aware humans over those who didn't even register a noticeably spiritual presence. Shiro kept quiet watching as the Hollow turned to her and hissed. It was actually kind of funny seeing a Hollow who was clearly outclassed, trying to act tough. But Shiro hadn't come here to play with it. The beast had already proven to be a threat, the spirit she'd saved from this hollow's clutches informed her that the hollow had already killed two others before she'd arrived. Did it really need to eat that much at once or was it just trying to cause problems?
The Hollow turned again to make its getaway. Though it was utterly confused by how a human had attained so much strength, it didn't want to stick around any longer to see what the human girl would do. The Hollow didn't make it very far before its body suddenly felt like a ton of lead bricks had been placed all over its body. It struggled but fell helplessly to the ground with a thud. "Sorry, but I can't let you escape. You've already killed two people so if I let you go you'll probably just kill more..." Shiro slowly approached the Hollow, it hissed in response seemingly possessing no words to grant the girl. She'd been naive about the nature of Hollows before but she knew better now. Ones that actively approached the human world and hunted its residents were usually cruel and sadistic and deserving of the punishment the regular Shinigami patrols usually dished out. Through observation Shiro had noted how most of these creatures weren't simply here to sate their unusual hunger. No they usually went far beyond what was necessary and would continue to kill until they'd sated their sick and disgusting interests.
The beast hissed again but this time out of fear as it tried to struggle. Even as electrified blueish energy formed at the tip of Shiro's right hand the creature continued its desperate attempt to escape, being completely unable to move... There was a flash as Shiro unleashed what appeared to be a bolt of lightning and then... the Hollow's head disappeared completely, the remainder of its body soon to follow as it began to disperse into strange particles.
"I'm not sure what's more tiring... chasing down all these random Hollows or... avoiding the public eye and trying not to look suspicious..." Shiro sighed. She turned to the lone spirit who promptly thanked her for saving him before disappearing back to the original location from before the hollow started chasing him. Shinigami sure had it easy... They at least didn't have to worry about public appearances and people seeing them all the time.
She sensed it. The presence of another hollow coming from the direction of the market districts but unlike what she'd felt so far, this one had some strength to it. Likely here to terrorize just like all the other hollows she'd hunted down but its presence was a large degree more significant than what she'd detected thus far. By comparison she couldn't see it as a challenge for herself but the key problem was what it could do to the people around itself if she didn't hurry... Despite weighing the risk of being noticed by someone, Shiro opted to intercept the threat as quickly as possible before it had time to cause any serious damage...
{Spoiler}Name: Reiatsu Suppression Class: Reiatsu Control Tier: I - VII (1 tier per mastery level) Type: Binding Range: 50m with no fall off Description: The power to manifest your reiatsu pressure around you, forcing your enemies to their knees with your substantial reiatsu, and even rendering them unconscious with enough advantages. This ability can also be used defensively to ward off an opponent's version of the ability.
Name: White Dragon's Fangs Class: Human Powers Tier: II Type: Offensive Range: Medium (30m) Description: Channeling her Reiatsu through her weapon, Shiro is able to mimic the arcing features of lightning itself. Attacks will ground themselves at the target area if the ground is close enough or dissipate after reaching a distance of 30 meters.
Lucy dove forwards, coming up from a roll and leaping to her feet. Glass and mortar crunched under her feet from the buildings either side of the market, they had been blown apart from the power of the mighty roar.
"Put on a good show."
Her eyes narrow and she whispers "People are paying good money for this."
She turned to face her opponent. The civilians that could still walk were hobbling away, those nearest to her now stared, from unease to fear as they suspected she was the source of the commotion. Bodies lay on the floor either side of her, the voice wanted her to look at them, so she looked at them. In her mind, she had already forgotten, in a zombie state brought about by her trigger phrase. All to fight this monster. It stood 20ft high with giant hammer-like fists, a thick hibbo-like centaur body and the back legs of a rhino.
Lucy chuckled audibly, somewhere in the world, the audience did to. They tuned in for the personality she adopted when she fought, the shy little girl suddenly giving way to a powerful being that fought, not because she enjoyed it but because the only voice in her head that mattered was working for them. They fed off of the misery and death they could so carelessly create with no repercussions. Lucy did not know any of this, she only knew her eyes were not her own, and to put on a good show.
The form this monster had chosen was typically charger, get up close and personal and try squash her between those fists. Brute strength, but a typical starter round for Lucy Live, as she could sense what they could not, his low power output. It waxed and waned before her very eyes, watching her, waiting for her to make a move. The voice told her to wait, savour the moment, hold it, hold it...hold it....Now.
"What's up, I'm Lucy, and you are?"
It charged, smashing entire market stalls out of the way with its bulk. She walked towards it, calmly, not too fast, not too slow. As it got closer she felt for her powers, the low thrum of energy she always felt and the effect she wanted it to have. It curled around her hand and settled ready to be triggered. The audience saw none of this, all they say was:
She reached out like she was going to actually shake the hand of the charging monster, (audience on the edge of their seats)...Then punched it in the face.
The hollow shot immediately backwards, having barely ruffled a hair on Lucy's head and barely tapped her hand[1]. It crashed into a wall backwards and hit it's head against the brick, croaking a little as it struggled to break free. Lucy smiled, looking down at her knuckle and blowing on it. Put on a good show. The voice was singing praises, the voice liked fighting, what did Lucy like? Didn't matter, the voice was hers, so this must be what she liked. The voice said look at the bodies again, so she did.
The hollow smashed his hammer fists backwards into the wall, breaking himself out of the masonry and falling back to the floor. The voice thought she should make it quick, the next round was almost here and she needed to ascend before the end of this one. Lucy nodded, turning away from the bodies to face the monster as it finished growling.
Now, someone in the world just lost a bet, and let me tell you how. The audience were placing bets on when she would use her higher powers, once a week when the show aired she activated them at different stages and times in the competition. The host, Kirami, knows which hollow he is releasing or luring next and bases the rounds weakest to strongest depending on what was available and how much people pay. Therefore can manipulate the largest wagers into his own pocket.
The red hairband in her hair loosened, the only thing she has left of her mother in this world, and tore itself apart. The strands flew all around her in a sphere, her hair flaring up to add to the mess. Then two great wings unfolded from her back with a single line of spaced out feathers hanging down and flexing out to full length. Her dress unfurled with black feathers and and spread out to her sides. In total, creating a truly intimidating site to the viewers who watched the whole thing on previously placed, specially designed cameras, positioned on the buildings that Kirami could now switch between as she had reached the stage he created.
Lucy almost felt them click back in to her eyes as she reached the monster, then click out again as her wings started to writhe and curl upwards[2]. The tips of the feathers hardened and almost had a glint to them as they formed giant serrated blades along the pure white frame that topped the wings. The wings flashed in the sunlight as Lucy dove and twisted sideways, the wing blades coming down like a butchers cleaver through the head of the monster before it could even twitch it's hands. The monster slumped on the spot, letting out a small moan before fading into nothing. Her wings relaxed, the feathers floating back down to their resting position, but still writhing.

Name: Scruffy Bird Class: Fullbring Tier: III Type: Offensive Range: 40m Description: The feathers on Lucy's wings start to curl and writhe as if they are alive, for the duration of this technique Lucy has complete control over the feathers. This includes but is not limited to firing them like T1 sharpness darts, creating a distracting swarm and creating small-mid sized objects and structures. Alternativly, feathers may wrap themselves around the wings like a serated blade and then be used as such in hands-free conjunction with the technique. Lost or destroyed feathers are recreated on Lucy's back and move down the wing like a factory line. Lasts three posts, feathers not attatched at the end of the duration explode(T1 shrapnel) in a poof.

"Two hollows?" No that couldn't be right. Sure hollows appeared and sometimes worked together but that kind of thing didn't appear to happen all that often. More than likely the two were trying to subdue each other to obtain a hefty meal. But one of the two presences she sensed felt a bit different. Sayuri passed through Shiro's thoughts for an instant but she quickly dismissed the idea. There was no way it could be Sayuri over there. She'd been taken away to Hueco Mundo by a much stronger hollow... It had to be another Fullbringer then. Shiro doubled down on her *Spark Steps. If it was an even match, or even if it wasn't...
With the sound of a static discharge Shiro entered the fight at the arena, or what was left of it. Slipping in undetected she noticed that frightened people were still scattering amid the chaos, many were injured while others... Sheathing the Katana she'd instinctively drawn, Shiro then pulled out her cellphone and dialed the emergency number to contact the police and ambulance services. To keep things believable and prompt a more effective response she explained that there had been a strange explosion in the area and people were hurt. But even with this call it would probably take ten or fifteen more minutes for emergency crews to show up...
While she hadn't gotten a good look at the Hollow since it'd been defeated right as she arrived, Shiro couldn't ignore the late Hollow's all too obvious opponent. The girl for the most part looked human aside from the strange way she dressed and the abnormal wings extending from her body. Clicking off her phone from the call, Shiro put it back into the pocket of her skirt and approached the girl. "Excuse me, are you alright did you get hurt at all?" Shiro addressed the winged girl. It might not have been the smartest approach since this girl didn't seem to be injured. A more logical approach would have been to check on the various others around the area, some of whom appeared to be in pretty bad shape. But hiding her true strength even if this girl could sense Shiro's presence was more than easily accomplished after months of training. She'd be less suspicious that way if she simply appeared to be a concerned human looking out for the injured after witnessing a mysterious explosion. That and the fewer people knowing about Shiro's own powers the better since it would allow her more freedom in terms of moving around when she chose to help in picking up some of the Shinigami's work in the area, Not that they'd actually asked her to do anything of course. She just felt obligated to do something beneficial for them after breaking into the Seireitei uninvited...
{Spoiler}*Name: Scintilla Varico (Spark Step) Class: Stepping Tier: I Type: Stepping RangeN/A Description: A movement technique that allows the user to move extremely quickly over short distances. This technique produces a single large sound on each use akin to what one hears by producing a static shock when rubbing easily charged surfaces together.
"Excuse me, are you alright did you get hurt at all?"
Emergency services? Survivor coming back for a loved one? A thought flashed through Lucy's mind that the voice read as if from a book. Ah, a venture, the voice murmured. Lucy frowned and looked at the girl, sensing something not quite right about the way she had approached.
The voice agreed as it read her thoughts, the link to the audience severing and sending Lucy stumbling to one knee.
"How are we enjoying it folks? Alright! This is where the action is and I know we can do better so I'm gonna lay it on you. Votes on your screens now, pick a reply, and we will have her say it! How about that! Bring them in now, ok! Alright! And here is the decision...What, really, ok, that's...ok sure, yeah why not. It's, 'If you stay here, you will die'. Real original."
How dare this mortal address you in your higher form, boomed the voice as it connected back with Lucy. The sound echoing in her head as she fueled her strength to stand again. Remove this insect from your path if he hesitates! Tell him, if you stay here, you will die, and then beat him up if he doesn't leave, the voice commanded, sounding slightly dejected.
"If you stay here, you will die." Lucy warned the girl in a monotone voice.
Lucy told herself this was a warning that more monsters were coming. She did not know from where and her sensing abilities were limited, especially if the enemies were about to get tougher. Enemies? The voice inquired. Why what a fantastic idea, the crowd has loved the show so far, let's throw in two of them. Somewhere in his lab, Kirami was pausing the stream and deploying his drones for aerial footage of the fight that was to come.
The voice did not approve of this girl being here, or of Lucy getting any ideas of trying to protect her if he sent more Hollow at her. Though he said this privately, he had nothing to fear, Lucy was entirely under his curse and could not interfere.

"Ah...!" Shiro moved to catch the girl's closest arm when she stumbled. She hadn't looked injured but maybe whatever fight took place here had actually done something to her physical condition. Being underestimated was a new experience for Shiro and she couldn't help but crack a little smile at the girl's concern for her safety. Though the way the girl spoke was strangely monotone, Shiro brushed it off as possible shock from what'd happened. Maybe the girl did have powers but it was also possible that the girl couldn't actually see the monsters she was fighting against. If that were the case then things could only end very badly for her if she were to keep on fighting.
"You don't need to worry about me I'll be fine, but we should get you someplace safe before anymore of those explosions go off." Shiro stated, still feigning ignorance of spiritual knowledge in case the girl really couldn't see spirits. Regardless of the situation and how it'd played out before her arrival, Shiro could feel two more presences approaching fast. They felt about as strong as the first one that'd been defeated but with two of them this time the girl might not be able to come out unscathed if she was forced to fight them. "I'll handle the situation from here so you should rest." Pending the girl's acceptance (or not) Shiro chose to guide the girl out of the immediately damaged area. With a firm grip on the girl's arm Shiro took her to a location with more cover.
Scanning the area Shiro took in the surrounding situation, debating whether or not fighting here would be a wise choice. "There's two more coming. I suggest you stay here for now or else you might get hurt." Shiro stated calmly, forgetting to feign ignorance and looking towards the direction she could feel the Hollows approaching from. She drew her Katana from the sheath strapped around her waist. Maybe she could get the drop on these two approaching hollow without them or anyone else ever noticing what hit them or that she'd been the one to cut them down...
The hollows were approaching quickly, perhaps the first one had been their partner in crime? Shiro couldn't help but feel it was a bit unusual. For Hollows to gather in one place like this... it just didn't feel right somehow...
What was Shiro up to as of late? He hadn't seen the kid in a while, and decided to pay a visit. He hadn't have found a better day to do so, as it seemed some of his kind were about making mischief. Little did he know, they were just pawns in a game he didn't know he was about to be playing. To Theocelese, the screaming and explosions were almost a natural occurrence, and he'd played the role of public defender more than his fair share to know what was happening. As he'd expected, Shiro arrived on the scene quickly to attend to a weaker presence. He followed suit, but due to the late arrival, needed that extra moment to catch up. And catch up he did, appearing beside the injured girl. "Hey brat, good to see you." he said, taking a glance over at the injured human to do a quick assessment of visible wounds. Looked like she'd live. Drawing his own blade, Theocelese looked around. "Do you think you're capable of taking those two alone? I can come with you if you'd like."
They'd never actually fought together before, and this time seemed like a better time than any. Rescue workers weren't too far off either, meaning that keeping the approaching Hollow from reaching this area was the obvious course of action. Of the two tools strapped to his back, Theocelese chose to don his shield, rather than bringing forth his chainaxe, Noxa. He'd cleaned the gnarly weapon not too long ago, and preferred to keep both the teeth and their tracts as clean as possible. Power washing chunks of meats wasn't exactly a pleasant experience. Made him think more about when he should actually be using the damn thing. He was more war gear than actual man at this point, with another short blade on the right of his hip. Of all the trinkets he wore, whether they were charms and trinkets in his hair or around his neck, the ring on his right ring finger stood out with a bit more professional craftsmanship. Gold in color, the signet ring held the insignia of a lion's talons clutching a scarlet rose.
"You look a little nervous. What plagues your thoughts, Shiro?" he asked as he took position next to his student. The decision was still up to her, but it was better to be prepared than to not.
Lucy was about to reply when the voice flickered off in her head. It felt like throwing off a heavy weight from her shoulders, but she was then left missing the weight. It literally pulled her down to ground level, gave everything a sense of perspective that allowed her to fight. It also calmed her down, a reality she was reminded of because a hard lump formed in her throat from the bodies littering the street.
The girl had thought these were explosions, then said there were more coming. Lucy was confused as to whether she thought more explosions were coming or not...the voice had know what the explosion was. He was silent now. If the voice knew of any more danger come he would tell her, he would connect back in any second now and warn her. But he was gone, it was gone, now all she had was the fight.
She had no doubt these two were behind the voice fading, the coincidence was far too unlikely. They had sensed the monsters and were just like her, she could sense nothing but the words they used...the calm they spoke with. How did they know two more were coming? How did they know where from? The gap in her mind was causing her serious confidence issues, her right arm instinctively going up to hold her left. These beings were much more powerful than her, whatever it was they were doing, or perhaps simply by their presence, the voice had been forced to retreat.
As Lucy became more lost and confused watching the couple, something occurred to her. If the voice was gone, then he was not watching. She felt for it, that twinge, the invasion of privacy that had faded so suddenly she had not noticed it. She was not sure how she felt about this, or if she felt, what was feeling when the voice made her decisions? When the voice told her how to feel? The mental strain started to become too much, and she had to let some of the frustration out. Her fullbring melted back into her body, her hair returning to it's normal place within the band as she stepped towards them shyly.
"Thank you for the offer but, maybe you guys should leave...I can handle them...if that's...ok." With every word her head and volume dipped further down until she was talking to her shoes. She had created this vision in her mind of her eyes melting from raw power if she looked directly at either of the newcomers, a vision she was now desperately trying to avoid.
It was not that she felt less than them, simply that the voice might get angry. This situation felt alien, new even, like a sense had been awoken she never knew she had. Much like that word that lingers on the tip of your mind, she could not quite grasp what she was in the presence of. The new man seemed stronger somehow, though Lucy suspected this was because he had ignored her.
Unbeknownst to her or the voice, it had conditioned her into being easily conditioned.
"Mr. Rose!? When did you get here?" Shiro hadn't sensed him approach at all. Either that or she'd just been too busy focusing on the incoming Hollows to notice Theocelese's arrival. Judging by how well equipped Theocelese appeared to be she guessed he'd been doing something important. He was decked out and ready to fight. More than fight, he looked ready to go into all out war mode... "Is all of that gear really necessary for this?" She asked but already knew what his answer to her question would be. And her answer was no. No she hadn't brought her armor or the gun he'd gifted her. And her excuse was simple, she hadn't wanted to arouse suspicions by donning the gear and making herself look like some sort of terrorist jumping from rooftop to rooftop while she scouted the city out in search of hostile Hollows...
When he asked if she thought she could handle the two inbound targets on her own Shiro simply nodded and turned back towards the direction she felt them approaching from. "They aren't very strong. I was considering taking them out in a single stroke before they even noticed I was here." She had considered two techniques that would do the job. One was a powerful sword technique and while it would be blatant overkill, it would be ideal for eliminating the targets if they chose to approach from above. The other option, if they chose to approach from ground level, was to hit them with a bolt of her electrified reiatsu and potentially disintegrate the targets. Either way Shiro was confident she could end things swiftly before the hollows had a chance to inflict anymore damage or injury.
"It's just... this seems a little strange... Aren't there too many Hollows around here right now? And they all seem to be coming to this location for some reason..." Shiro admitted her concern, turning her attention to the girl before looking back to Theocelese. "I might be overthinking things a little but... I feel like they're targeting her for some reason." A grim notion she was sure but then Shiro wasn't one to underestimate her opponent. She'd trained with Theocelese after all.
"No. It's not okay. You shouldn't fight alone. Especially in your condition." Shiro addressed the girl when she told them she could fight on her own, misinterpreting the girl's gestures to be a sign that she may have injured her arm.
"Instead of waiting for the Hollows to arrive I think it might be better if I intercept them. Can you stay with her? If these hollows are after her specifically then it would be better if one of us stays behind to protect her." Shiro wouldn't take no for an answer. Even if Shiro didn't know this girl, her energies were still similar to Sayuri's... The last thing she wanted was a repeat of what happened to her friend.
Readying her Katana, Shiro gave the girl a reassuring nod and- vanished with the sound of static discharge. She would intercept these monsters and make certain they didn't do any more harm than they already had.
"Just now, girl. That should have been obvious." He glared at Shiro with a shit eating grin, though that grin only widened when it was asked if all he carried was necessary. Then, as if realizing she already knew the answer, her facial expression shifted, as did the subject of conversation. He took note of Shiro's analysis of the situation, as well as the concern expressed to the injured girl. Theocelese found himself about to ask Shiro if she was ready for the endeavor, but everything about her in this moment gave him the answer he already knew. She was damn ready for this. How she was handling the situation thus far proved that maybe there wasn't just hot air floating around in that thick skull of hers. Sheathing his blade and stowing his shield, Theocelese reached behind his back. He'd carried firearms like that before...this was a no brainer what was going to happen next. "Options win battles. Having more options than your enemy wins wars. Take it, even if you don't use it, it'll help me worry less that you have a card hidden up your sleeve." Sure as shit, Theocelese turned over the same kind of pistol they'd shot together, only this one had an extended mag, doubling the maximum capacity the weapon carried. He wasn't going to take no for an answer, that, among many other things, was quite obvious.
But what Theocelese did next was something perhaps a bit unexpected. From his ring finger, he slid the masterfully crafted trinket off of his finger, took Shiro's hand, and placed it in her palm. "Put this on. If you really get into a jam, all you need to do is think of safety. This ring can give you a temporary shield, I'd thought of giving it to the girl, but if I'm to remain she will not need it. You might. I'm proud of you, koukla-mou. You've earned this." Theocelese spoke and then drew his ancient blade in his right hand, his shield returning to his left forearm. Taking note of the surroundings--physically and spiritually, Theocelese returned to Lucy's side. Something was wrong with her, but he couldn't quite tell what just yet. "My student is correct, you are in no capable condition to fight those monsters. Leave the situation to us, and we will see you home safely." Now the Arrancar wished he'd donned his old human wargear, and regretted at how fucking cool it all would have been, just like in the old days.
"What is wrong with you, girl? Are you in great pain?" He asked, hoping that's all that it was. He had more than enough of a....blend of pills meant to dull the body. Despite the rushed questioning towards Lucy, there was genuine concern in the man's tone and in the way he spoke. This wasn't some Superman type of showing up, where all he cared about was purging the enemy only to then take off. Theocelese was here until the ordeal was over for all parties involved, he wasn't here just for fame and glory.
Lucy could not speak. She had lost the voice in her head and therefore her own voice. What was she meant to say? Her eyes flicked up to the mans face, or Mr. Rose as the other girl had called him before vanishing into thin air. She was still staring at the spot where the girl had stood, and she had known this man. 'A single stroke' is what she had said. She could kill these monsters with one hit, a movement as sudden as her own disappearance and a monster that would have taken Lucy half an hour to wear down would be dead. She took a moment to breath, taking in all this new information and trying her best to process it through her limited world view. After a few minutes, she reached a conclusion.
She was not alone.
There were other people like her...maybe not exactly like her...and a lot more powerful. They...felt, different, they felt powerful. The way they stood, they way they talked, their confidence and synergy. Lucy did not know how long these two had been master and apprentice, or even how long it had been since they talked last. He had called her koukla-mou, was this a title? Her name? A respectful name for apprentice? Whatever it was, Lucy did not want to use it until she knew what was going on. But now they worked together as if scripted. A flare of paranoia rose as she considered this to be another rouse by the voice...but it was still gone. Still gone. And opportunity was knocking.
"I'm fine. I am not hurt, and they would not be coming if I could not handle them. I have powers too ya'know"
Lucy tried to make eye contact as she spoke, but Mr. Rose's piercing golden eyes made her avert her gaze, turning the last part into muttering. Her mind was bursting with questions with no voice to rein them in, a whirlwind of thoughts and possibilities.
"And I don't have a home. Homes make you predictable, homes are a weakness." Her voice was a flat monotone and pronunciation as if these lines have been drilled into her.
"I'm not weak" She tried to sound confident. She did not sound confident.
She struggled to feel as if this were true. These higher beings were far beyond her power and comprehension. They either possessed powers she did not or powers greater than hers, the voice had always told her she was alone, no one was coming to help. But here was Mr. Rose and his apprentice, helping. A life of watching others interact allowed her to read the confidence Mr. Rose was exhuming. His stance, his words, his charisma and his protective nature. Lucy thought, here was a man who used his power to help people who could not help themselves.
Lucy was not sure if this was foolish or admirable, but it had made him stronger than her. So what was she doing wrong?
She waited, as if for an answer. Having become so used to the voice answering, she barely heard her own thoughts. If she wanted to know who they were...ask them. Idiot. She sighed, opening her mouth and glancing a couple of times before she worked up the courage to ask.
"What's...how...who are you? Do you know...what I am?" she could not make eye contact but her head raised slightly and her arms changed sides.
Yes options... Shiro accepted the pistol. Maybe it was a human flaw within herself that still worried about appearances. She'd seen death, been to worlds most others couldn't possibly imagine and yet she remained worried about how the powerless humans of her own world would perceive her if she carried around a gun. Theocelese casually handed the weapon over and Shiro realized how foolish she was being. She'd chosen to renounce her rights to the life she once knew and embrace the unknown. Why then was she still allowing herself to be controlled by the restrictive moral teachings of her previous life? Sure she was still human, still alive for that matter. But she was so much more than that now... She belted the gun Mr. Rose gave to her and, was a little surprised to find him taking her hand and slipping a ring into her palm. A source of protection? Or additional source at least. Even so he was right, it could come in useful if she met with anything unexpected. "Thanks. I'll be quick." She nodded assurance to Theocelese and put the ring on before leaving the scene.
Not long after parting from the scene of destruction and chaos did Shiro encounter the two she'd sensed. Two monstrous hollow floated in the sky seemingly without the aid of wings or anything else that one would normally think the beasts required in order to maintain such altitudes. So flying they were then. Shiro gripped her Katana in both hands and Spark Stepped up from behind to greet them. Theocelese might consider it underhanded to approach in such a way but these monsters were weak and she was efficient. Regardless of her approach the hollows in question would never stand a chance. And she also needed to consider the city below. Any disturbance in their confidence could result in an unintended result and Shiro definitely wanted to avoid further encouraging damages to the surrounding populated area.
With both hands firmly gripping her Katana, Shiro directed the sword's blade back to ready her attack. She released enough energy to alert the unsuspecting beasts to her presence and then her sword moved. Swiftly and faster than any normal eye could see Shiro swung. There was a moment of pause as the Hollows revealed to Shiro a look of confusion. And then the pain of no longer having attached lower bodies struck the two Hollows like a ton of bricks. They screeched in their eerie voices even as what remained of their bodies began to fade away. The wind and backlash hit Shiro a moment later and she could feel her muscles straining against the force of the attack she'd used. Of course it'd been massively overkill for as weak as the creatures happened to be, but if there was one thing Shiro had learned while fighting these kinds of monsters it was that you should never give them an opening to survive an attack, no matter how slim that chance might be.
Name: Wind Cutter Class: Weapon Skill Tier: VII Type: Offensive Range: 100 Meters Description: Shiro assumes a steady stance, pulling her weapon to an angle behind herself in both hands. Exhaling, she breathes and clears her mind. With a blindingly fast motion she then swings her weapon with deadly efficiency, sending out a razor sharp wave of force at a 45 degree line across the angle in which she swings. This force travels at Cero speed and cuts through anything and everything in its path, dealing Tier VII damage to terrain or opponents. Unfortunately, due to the nature of this attack's qualities, damage drops off significantly after reaching its peek distance of 40 meters. Damage is reduced by one tier for every 10 meters beyond 40, falling to a minimum of Tier I damage at 100 meters. Drawbacks: This ability can only be used with a bladed weapon. Damage Tier of this ability drops off by I every 10 meters passed 40 to a minimum damage strength of Tier I at 100 Meters. Continuous use of this ability without resting causes muscle strain and reduces Shiro's strength by x2 for 4 rounds. (The user may wait an additional 3 rounds beyond this ability's cooldown duration to avoid incurring the strength penalty) If Shiro doesn't wait an additional 3 (Total of 6 including cooldown) rounds between each use of this ability then the penalty is increased to x3 strength and then x4. At x4 the penalty becomes permanent until the end of the current RP session.
Seeemed this one was just full of surprises in her answers. Similar to Shiro, she lacked a home...and maybe social exposure. Maybe it was a good thing Shiro and himself stumbled upon her this night. Theocelese thought about how ridiculous, funny, and almost creepy it was that those who he could help these days seemed to be teenage girls. Why. Where did the entire male population go? Maybe they all joined this shitty war-time era and were either all dead, or were in the Quincy, pussy realm all hidden and secure, or in the Gotei somewhere. Either way, this one needed some kind of help. Even thinking about the Quincy already made his blood boil, and he was quick to pop open the bottle of cocktail pills and down half the contents, chewing quickly to feel the numbing relief. Better to be drugged and doped out of his fucking mind than to become some lunatic at mere thoughts. His hand idly coasted to Solinex's Zanpakutou, and he felt the need to brutally murder anything with a Quincy lineage. When the time came to take to the battlefield....the levels of slaughter he would unleash would go down in history. And it was this thought that had Theocelese thinking....if these people called him a villain now....what would they call him when he conquered them?
"I'm a sucker for pride too, girl, but you are in no condition to fight. Here," The Arrancar paused, sliding a select pill out from the orange bottle out onto his palm. His hand extended to the girl in offering, whether she took it or not, was up to her. "A moderate dosage, but it won't you turn you into a zombie. Please take it for the pain." The fatherly instinct, in conjunction with the medication already pumping around in his veins eased the unstable fury building within. It was the way he said it, much like before, that suggested he wasn't going to take 'no' for an answer. She'd already seen him take enough of whatever the hell he was offering to her to kill a normal human being, so hopefully that would eliminate some skepticism. With all that out of the way, he could address her statements and question.
"As do many others, girl, but you're in no condition to keep up in this battle. Allow Shiro to finish this, and myself to remain on overwatch. I promise none of my misbegotten ilk will harm you this night so long as we are here.." The man spoke in a strange, old, and mythic sort of way that could have suggested his preferred literature, or perhaps age. Still on alert, Theocelese continued to address the young human. "Having a home is not a weakness. It is safety, security. At the end of the day it is better to have four walls, a roof, and a hot meal than to be drifting aimlessly....which I may assume.... you have been doing such a thing. Living in such a manner is no proper way for a girl to live. Or boy, for that matter." Theocelese's attention, partly focused on Shiro's execution of her plan, but mostly on the surrounding area for any looming threats, did not wane.
"In the grand scheme of things, girl....yes you are. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Shiro was such a thing when I met her, and I too was at the lowest rungs of a ladder before I found myself unable to rest in peace. I offer you two choices from this night hence. The burden of knowing what is on the other side can be completely removed, and I will make sure you live a normal life. If you cannot abide by what I feel would be best for you, then I offer guidance so you may grow and so that no other beings--Hollow, Shinigami, or other mortals will think twice before attempting harm upon your person. Aside from offering you housing and an allowance--so long as you maintain some form of educational balance. Maybe you can teach Shiro something about that." And now...the last of words answered. Theocelese took in a deep intake of air, and exhaled slowly.
"What you are...a human, who can mentally process the events of the spiritual around her. What your baseline capabilities are, I do not know. Who you are, I have yet to ascertain. You ask a question about yourself you know I have no real answer to. Only with time and observation can I truly answer that. As to who I am...a savage roar, silenced."
Lucy accepted the pill warily. Don't take random drugs from strangers was lesson one in how to survive on the streets as a girl bootcamp. Especially from someone seemingly addicted to said drug. But the glint in his eye and the power that radiated from himself and the other girl in the distance told her going with it would be within her best interests. She held it in her left hand, pushing it over with her thumb to examine it, when her head exploded with pain.
A garbled voice was trying to break through to her mind. She could feel it grasping at her thoughts and falling away like a drowning man trying to pull himself up by soggy toilet paper. It tore at her thoughts, the words undecipherable but the meaning coming through clear. Don't take the pill, don't take the pill...she took the pill. It tasted of nothing and went down easily but instantly the pain shut off. The noise was on mute and the influence on her mind vanished. Visible relief could be seen on her face but not for long, as Mr. Rose continued to talk, and she let him. Lucy wanted answers of her own.
She debated telling him she was not in pain, that she was not physically hurt. Then paused, for all she knew, he had known her mental state. Who knew how powerful this man was, what lengths his abilities could go to. He could be in her mind right now, except from...it was just her. She was startled to realize she could hear herself think, herself being...well her. She made decisions...she could decide to talk to this man, because he wanted to talk to her. For the first time in her life, she had found someone powerful enough to not only block the voice with his presence alone but break through her curse. Though she refrained from replying to Mr. Rose's house comments she still could not see the merit, why would you want to be predictable? Would that not make you track able? But she did not want to get into an argument with someone who clearly knew better than her. So instead she shook her head lightly.
Lucy was not sure how to process such a large dump of information at once. But she did want to know more.
"Tell me more...please. I want...I want to be better. I want to not be scared, not be weak. I want to know what I am and what I can do so I know know where I belong. Whats a Shinigami? Whats a Hollow?"
Lucy knew this was the most she had ever talked out loud, the desperation was clear in her voice and her front was fragile as glass. If she had overstepped her boundaries and he snapped, she would fold like a cheap suit. She did not care she had risked it all, she had been living in the dark for too long and even if Mr. Rose saw himself as a savage he was the only light in her dim little world worth a chance. She debated showing him what she could do, but restrained herself. If he was here to protect people then her power drawing more monsters in would not help, and could even turn him against her. Lucy would have to be smart about this.
"I can do...some things. I can fight! I can...bounce? I can listen and I can learn! Would...you help me? Would you help me find my savage roar and teach me how to tame it? Or maybe like...a coursebook?"
Lucy thought she spoke with words that would effect her life. Words that would change her life, in her mind she saw training and fighting, learning for years in a new family. In less than a day she would forget this conversation. In a week she would forget this day even happened. The true curse Kisami had ensured was in place was not that Lucy could never make friends, but that she could not remember them. Meaning that on several occasions in the past she had offended those who were positively inclined by 'pretending' she could not remember them.
She had indeed been quick about things. After eliminating the targets a survey of the area revealed no indications of further inbound threats, at least not yet... With the two Hollows dispatched Shiro chose to return to the original location and regroup with Mr. Rose and the Fullbringer girl. She wasn't entirely convinced that she'd seen the last of Hollows in the area but remaining separated from potential support to search for a threat that may or may not still be hanging around wouldn't be a wise decision if something more dangerous chose to show its unsightly face.
Just as she'd vanished, so to did Shiro reappear before Theocelese and the girl with the sound of her Spark Step. "I've taken care of the immediate problem but we probably shouldn't stick around this area much longer if the threats are actually after us, or her." Shiro added at the end, gesturing to the injured girl. At least she acted injured. Based on appearances alone Shiro didn't actually think the girl looked to be injured at all...
"My name's Shiro Inazuma. I didn't get a good look at it when I first arrived but I'm assuming you can see spirits too since it looked like you were fighting a Hollow earlier" Shiro smiled at the girl, offering her a proper greeting.
Whatever seemed wrong with this girl was deep. It wasn't just physical injuries--and while she looked roughed up for better or worse, she didn't quite limp. Didn't quite speak with a voice that came with a seriously injured body. She stood, she talked....she was....desperate....but why? Theocelese raised a brow at her, slowly putting his weapons away as the Hollow threat became non-existent, thanks to Shiro. For whatever reason, this girl reminded him of the Megadeth song, Sweating Bullets. A great song to be sure...but that song implied there wasn't something right in her noggin'. Maybe a few screws loose, but hey, who didn't have that problem? Theocelese wasn't exactly innocent of that accusation, what with literally blacking---or redding out when he couldn't keep his fury in check, only to wake up covered in blood and viscera only seen when you tossed sixty or so people in a room lined with saw blades and other nasty sharp objects meant to turn meat into exploded pans of beef strogonauf. The girl's over all responses were...disheartening, to say the least. He'd hoped at least someone, somewhere, would have wanted a normal life. But Theocelese did not know the girl's predicament, still, the disappointment was clear on his face. He'd never be able to save these kids from the fate of more or less being child soldiers...but at least he could do as he did with Shiro, and teach Lucy how to properly defend herself. Not just from horrible monsters from a world of eternal night, but from all sources who would see her as prey.
"I can do this, girl...but there are rules and doctrines you must abide by. These cannot be broken, and so long as you are under my tutelage you do not disobey myself, or Shiro, as she will help guide you. As I've told her before, I will not be around forever...but you two may grow and be strong together." Theocelese said this, hand rising and then falling on top of her head to ruffle up the long strands of Lucy's hair, something he did--and would do to Shiro, once she returned to them. That wasn't exactly too far in the future. "You must abandon this idea that a home is a weakness. I can give you this, and in fact, you'd be neighbors to that little firecracker dealing with the monsters hunting you down. Just know that any time you want out of this I am capable of severing your abilities to be tied to the spiritual realms." With this said, and his hand retracted, Theocelese kept that hand up as if to keep the girl silenced.
"For now, please know you are safe. All will be explained soon, as best and as clear as I can. For right now..." The Arrancar paused, arm lowering as Shiro appeared before them almost as fast as she disappeared. She spoke, and after introducing herself did Theocelese take the step needed to ruffle her hair as well. He grinned at Shiro, glossy eyed and bordering on either just high enough, or too high. It was hard to tell. Around this time, the EMTs and rescue personnel had just arrived, and those innocent folks caught in the crossfire were not exactly targets for Hollow. Their true target was about to be moved. "And I am Theocelese, girl. You may address me as such, as as Mr. Rose. For the time being, Shiro is right. We should evacuate the area to prevent further innocent lives from being in jeopardy. If you would have us as your hosts for the time being, I think you could use a hot shower and a meal. You can mull over the options given to you...and if you choose to go your own way, know that such a decision will be respected...but we will always be here for you, if needed." He did not want to take away Lucy's free will in this matter, just as he did with Shiro. Everything Lucy wanted would be of her own volition. The Arrancar held a hand out to Lucy now, an invitation to be taken to somewhere she would be safe. Truth be told, he didn't quite feel like walking, and would scoop the girl up in his arms should his hand be taken. Shiro knew where home was...Hell, she had one of the best rooms in that apartment complex, and knew where that building was already. Theocelese planned on using Sonido once or twice, if needed, to get them there in just a few moment's worth of time. Before any of this, however, Theocelese turned his full attention to Shiro. She needed this, especially since his presence was...more or less sketchy, what with planning to kill an ancient deity and all.
"Shiro....you did exceptional.. I am more proud of you than you can fathom. We will speak more later tonight, when the chance arises."
Who was this man that accepted her so easily? This Theocelese Rose who had known her a few minutes and had already invited her to stay. He seemed sincere, though so did the voice when it wanted to...and yet. There was a repertoire between the two of them. A feeling of camaraderie and genuine pride in his student that Lucy had never wanted and now it was all she wanted.
The sirens of various emergency services wailed closer, she knew they would have to leave soon. Either together or not. She knew which she wanted, but she had been taught that alone was always better. She could not trust these people, and it was not like the police could or would help her. She had dealt with them before, sometimes the voice made her stay behind and let the audience laugh as their discomfort morphed into police brutality. Fun for the whole family, and their stupid family homes.
A lifetime of being mentally torn apart created conflicting emotions with the offer that had laid dormant for years. She knew a home was unsafe, it made you weak, it made you easy to find if you did not know how to protect it. But as she looked Shiro and Mr. Rose up and down there was not a single doubt in her mind that they could. The only question was, should she?
It was a question she would have to ponder later, in a time when she would no longer remember. Along with the meaning of severing her ties to the spiritual realm. She could not fight monsters without her powers if that's what he meant. A niggling thought in the back of her mind suddenly wondered if the voice had sent them, but it was dismissed almost as quickly. The voice for all the tortures it had put her through wanted a good show, if she had no powers it would be an execution. For now, she simply bowed slightly at them both and let a sliver of a grateful smile pull at the corners of her mouth.
"Shiro, Mr Rose-" she looked at each in turn then back to Shiro.
She had killed the hollow very quickly from the speed at which she had returned. Lucy wondered what her powers really were, and if she had seen the whole fight before. She felt her face flush, the first higher beings she had met ever and they must have thought she was the biggest showoff...and yet...they were here.
"Yes, I can see them, and yes I can fight...some of them...though I thank you for your help."
The word felt strange in her mouth. Help. She was always told, always knew, that no one would ever help her. That's what the voice had told her a hundred times, she was on her own, so many times that she thought it herself now. But here it was, here they were. Help.
Mr. Rose had said he would not be around forever. That help would run out eventually, but he seemed very confident he could get her to the point where she would not need it. What if Shiro died too? Would she be alone again or was there more help to be found? There was only one certainty that set in her turmoil riddled mind, she would not find out unless she tried.
"I-" she faltered.
Lucy wanted to promise with all her heart that she would obey and follow their commands to the letter. She had convinced herself they were genuine but she knew that as soon as it could the voice would be back. She knew that as soon as it was that her mind would be his and there was no way in any layer of hell that he would agree to this. But she had to hope.
