Akane's eyes bolted open. Not out of shock or fear from any kind of nightmare, but because she'd honed her body's internal clock the last several weeks. It was perfect. She could now set a time in her mind and wake up within minutes of that chosen time. At first Mitsuoki was always the first one up even as Akane's habit of sleeping more than half the day as a fox was slowly weened down to a proper eight hours per day. But thanks to the sleeping correction, she'd begun to identify more with the time in which Mitsuoki tended to awake himself. After the words he'd spoke last night, she most certainly had to wake up today before he did. "Training" That had been the word he'd used. She'd seen his training and it looked like a lot of pointlessly hard work that she really didn't want to have any part of. She was content with just watching him train while she continued to learn more and more about being human. Though reading was still a struggle, the girl could now hold a proper conversation, and she often did so enthusiastically with anyone who held the time to spare her a moment.
Shifting her head carefully to one side, Akane surveyed the situation. She didn't really have her own place to sleep yet so Mitsuoki was allowing her to sleep in his bed. If she'd been a bit bigger, sleeping in the smallish bed together would likely have been an issue space wise. Akane let out a sigh of relief. Mitsuoki's arm was tucked away and wasn't wrapped around her like it'd been when they had gone to sleep last night. It was a stress she was glad she didn't have to worry about as she had no idea what she would have done to keep from waking him had his arm still been around her. Cautiously she pulled the covers up and off of herself, careful not to tug on them lest she wake Mitsuoki. She then rolled as quietly and carefully as she could to avoid pulling the blankets underneath of her. With her feet planted firmly on the floor, Akane broke away from the bed and headed out of the room, grabbing the Shinigami robe and sandals Mitsuoki had given her to use.
Once outside the room, Akane donned the robe but held onto the sandals. Her bare feet were softer and would make much less noise. She crept passed the village elder's room, careful not to wake him either. She reached the door and managed to open and close it somehow without making much noise either. Akane sighed, letting out a breath she didn't even know she'd been holding. Now was the time to run if she wanted to get away before anyone noticed. Though she could move faster in her release form, Akane had found out that being in release form tended to give her away more than staying in her less obvious human form. And while she'd been secretly honing her ability to Obscure objects including herself from people's notice, as of right now she still hadn't figured out how to mask her presence while using it. So the key now was to get as far from the village elder's house as she could without getting noticed.
Akane dipped behind a stand selling rock candies, careful to conceal herself. In the last several weeks the residents of this village had gotten very familiar with her. So much so that she needed to avoid having them see her or else they might report her last known position to Mitsuoki. She'd waited until the village elder's house was no longer in sight before donning her sandals. As a result her feet had become covered in dirt. The faint smell of candies sent a rumble up from the girl's stomach. Of course she was hungry, she hadn't eaten any breakfast yet... but she had more important things to worry about. Like avoiding Mitsuoki's training. She thought about grabbing some of the rock candies to eat but decided against it. She couldn't remember the number of times she'd been flicked for stealing and she really didn't want to suffer those consequences again. So instead she headed down to the river.
She'd found a nearby dock and sat down at the end furthest out into the water. Plucking off her sandals she let her feet fall down into the cool clear flow of the river. It felt so freeing not to be wearing shoes, though she understood the merits of wearing them now... Unlike foxes, human feet didn't have any kind of protective padding on the bottom. She winced, remembering her first stubbed toe. It'd hurt so bad she hadn't stopped crying for nearly an hour. Even then it'd only been due to Mitsuoki's offer of treats that she'd eventually quieted down.
"Why does Mitsu want me to train too..." Akane pouted, scanning the other side of the river while splashing her feet up and down in the swollen waters. "Akane doesn't want to train..."
The day before, Mitsuoki had decided that Akane had gotten to a point where she would be more than able to begin her combat training. It was the requirement for her being allowed to stay with him in the Soul Society. He had talked to Kira about her, telling him what she originally was, as well as showing him the memory amulet's recording as proof. The lieutenant was a good man, dutiful, but not so bound by the rules of seireitei that he would damn someone to their inevitable death- especially a child. It was a firm belief of squad three that death was something they only caused if they couldn't avoid it, and that if they killed someone, they should never be forgiven. Kira didn't want that kind of blood on his hands so he talked with one of the other captains and made an official appeal to allow Akane to be considered an ally to the Seireitei. The requirement for Mitsuoki being allowed to keep her, as well as for them to be losing resources on the child in the form of food, she would have to be made capable of fighting on par with at least a mid-level Quincy, or a High-Level hollow.
To this end, Mitsuoki knew that he would need to teach her how to speak and understand those speaking to her. When she first entered, he had tried teaching her the conventional way and found that she didn't like learning. She constantly began hiding as random objects and forced Mitsuoki to make creative ways of finding her, and then forcing her to do her lessons. This time, Mitsuoki had a new way of teaching her. He had one of his old roommates from the kid corps get in touch with one of his old friends and acquire some books from the human world. Children learned considerably better when they weren't aware that they were learning. The best way to do that was by having them play games. Things like a game called 'tetris' taught children how to think on the fly by making them connect interlocking shapes that fell at an increasingly faster rate depending on the level. Mitsuoki would eventually have to find this game when he got around to teaching Akane more advanced combat; but for today, he was more focused on teaching Akane the most useful of all combat skills- mobility.
Just after Akane had crept out the room, Mitsuoki opened one eye and gave a gentle smirk. He knew she would try running away again. He waited another ten minutes to let Akane get some distance before getting out of bed and putting on his robes. He then walked outside and found that Kouta was already awake, sitting on his couch while reading a book. "I was wondering when you would wake up. Giving the girl a good chase, are we?" he asked, to which Mitsuoki said "Indeed." before walking out the door with his zanpakuto. He immediately entered his bankai, which didn't affect his spiritual pressure at all. In fact, Mitsuoki's bankai was by far, the most low-key bankai of all in existence. There was no bright flash, no increase in spiritual pressure, no change to his clothing, and nothing at all that could be used to tell he had entered bankai at all. The only way to know he was in his bankai state was the fact that he consciously avoided drawing the zanpakuto from its sheath. It was actually something he didn't need to do, even if he wasn't in bankai.
Akane would feel Mitsuoki's spirit pressure crashing down over the entire area of the village, including the docks where she was. The amount of spiritual energy he was putting out wouldn't be nearly enough to hinder Akane's movements, but just enough to let Akane know the direction Mitsuoki was in, and know that he was walking towards her. If Akane had moved into the village or under the bridge, she would feel his spiritual pressure increasing. The only time she would feel Mitsuoki's spiritual pressure vanish entirely, making it seem as though she'd lost him, would be if she headed to the thirteen pillar memorial, at the top of the hill.
Akane's ears perked up and she automatically assumed her release state upon picking up Mitsuoki's presence. She panicked. His presence was everywhere. How could she have missed detecting his approach so badly? "Muuuh..." Akane grumbled, jumping off the dock without her sandals and headed down the river towards the bridge. Maybe she could hide away from him under there... Or so she'd thought, but his presence didn't let up even after she got to the bridge and she'd found herself a good solid place to hide. It was a test... it had to be a test... right? No matter where she went she didn't seem to be able to avoid the lurking feeling of Mitsuoki's presence.
She attempted to hide under a stall in the village but all it proved to do was make her feel very jumpy. It felt like if she looked outside the stall for even an instant, she'd come face to face with Mitsuoki's feet... or worse, his face. His face was very scary... she could never tell when he was serious, or joking, or... Not like the other people she'd met since coming with him to Soul Society. They all had elaborate expressions and she'd learned to read them pretty well lately.
Next she dove behind a moving cart but she still couldn't shake Mitsuoki's ever looming presence. "Why. Why can I still feel his presence?" She muttered to herself. Akane's stomach gave a loud grumble. "Shh...! Don't talk!" she whispered harshly at her belly. Akane would have covered her belly's mouth if it even had. Akane checked both ways, taking a quick peek to one side of the cart, then whipping her head back to the other side. He wasn't there. At least not yet. She'd done well to keep herself out of his sight so far, she just needed to find a place where she could escape his presence.
She finally found it. The monument Mitsuoki had apparently built some time ago. It was a strange place to not be sensing him but Akane didn't question it, nor did she consider the possibility of this being a trap of any sort. The girl scanned the area, looking for a common object. Several loose stones littering the area caught her eye and she quickly gathered up half a dozen of them and ran up the steps to the largest of the Monument's pillars. Once there she set the rocks down and did her best to make them look as naturally placed as she could. "There! With this he'll never know it's me" Akane's mouth formed a wide grin at her rock-placing accomplishment before turning around to face the steps to sit among the rocks. "And... Poof!" Akane threw up her hands. It wasn't a required word or action for this ability she'd discovered of hers but the girl liked to speak aloud anyway. Sound effects, noises, and any other silly thing she could verbalize. Since she'd found her voice and learned to talk this had become a rather common practice of hers. Her form disappeared in a puff of smoke, replaced instead by a rock. It was similar in shape to the ones she'd gathered, but was size-ably larger than the rest. With this, Akane was now confident she could avoid Mitsuoki's detection.
Mitsuoki had felts Akane running up the side of the monument's hill and shut off his spiritual pressure, hiding it as best he could before constructing his Shallow Grave barrier around him. Using his mastery of Kido, he was able to make the barrier move with him while avoiding any objects that would potentially hit the barrier and be pushed around by it. He made his way up the monument slowly, letting Akane do whatever mischief she was up to in some attempt to escape being hidden. He had figured that Akane wouldn't go much farther than the monument since it was vastly more dangerous outside of the village, where hollows could pop up, or bandits would try and steal her away like the last time. Mitsuoki still didn't explain what a sex slave was since that type of content was for people far older than she was.
Akane had turned into a stone a few minutes before Mitsuoki had arrived at the top of the monument and approached the pile of rocks that was facing the front of it. He didn't even look down, just placed his hand on Haruka's pillar. It was something that Akane had seen him do many times before, almost ritualistically. Every time he visited the monument, in fact. However, this time, instead of him talking to the pillar like some sort of old friend, he gave a smirk. First he would look down at where the pile of rocks was. "Hello, Akane." he would say just before the third ring of the monument lifted up to form a wall. At the same time, a barrier was formed over the top of the wall and in between the gaps of the large, twelve foot slabs of marble. "First rule of using stealth. Think about the things that you're most likely to do, and don't do them." he said before taking his hand off the pillar.
If Akane hadn't already changed back, Mitsuoki would tap his foot on the ground with his arms crossed over his chest, waiting for her to turn back. She was already caught, and from previous encounters, should know that Mitsuoki would stand there for as long as it took for her to switch. He also knew that Akane was a child and a fox, and would not be able to stay in one place for long before getting bored.
Once Akane had changed back, Mitsuoki would kneel down and look her in the eyes. Normally, this was the part where he flicked her on the forehead for running away again. However, this time, he would reach out and gently put his hand on her back before pulling her into his chest. He would hold her in this way for a few seconds before letting her go and gently rubbing her head. "It was a good first try." he would say before standing up again and facing the pillar.
A few feet away would be a large gap in the floor that was eight feet wide, and the walls were glowing a gentle, light blue color. The hole would seem to go down endlessly, but actually be sixty five and a half feet straight down. "Akane." Mitsuoki would say calmly to get her attention. "Where we are going, I want you to understand that you are not allowed to bring anyone- no matter who they are. Not Kouta, not the other children, not Shiro, not Kira- no one." his tone would imply it was a very serious matter to him, and the fact that even his squad's lieutenant, who was currently acting in place of the captain, wasn't allowed to see it would add weight to that. He would then place his hand on the pillar and Akane would see the first step expand from the wall and slowly move across. When the step was halfway across, the second step would begin moving across. This would continue for each and every step, each making a soft 'thud' when they hit the wall on the other side.
Mitsuoki would take his hand off the wall and begin walking down the glowing, light blue steps with Akane until they came to a black doorway that was filled with a liquid-like material. He would place his hand on the wall next to it, causing the liquid to solidify before vanishing a few seconds later. "It is very important that you do not enter while this door is dark. You will be lost and I will never find you." he said in a tone that was just as heavy as him telling her to never bring anyone there. Mitsuoki walked through the now open door, into a room that had a light brown floor and walls, with a light blue ceiling. The floor was completely flat and would allow Akane to see all the way, five hundred meters to the other wall.
He placed his hand on the ground and said "Come forth, Gol." to summon the massive golem that he used to create the room. Gol had appeared from a bunch of spirit particles that assembled into the rocky formation and looked around to examine his surroundings. The golem then moved to the side of the wall before entering a relaxed state, placing his hands flat on the ground and his five eyes turning yellow. "Alright, Gol. Give me a forest." Mitsuoki said and the ground and walls glowed brightly for a moment. From the ground, the floor rose up and began forming the trunks of trees that turned into branches and leaves, changing color to match that of an actual forest. Warm, golden light filtered through the leaves. A five hundred by five hundred meter forest now surrounded them and was complete with a section with large rocks, a place with flowers, different kinds of trees, and very natural light. "Akane, we're going to play a game called 'tag' that the humans invented. I'm going to turn around and count to ten, after which, I am going to chase you. If I touch you, then you have to count to ten before chasing me. Whenever the person who is chasing catches the one who is running, they are to say 'tag.' Okay?" he would explain before turning around and beginning the count down. "One... two... three..."
Akane flinched at Mitsuoki's voice hanging above and calling her name. The rock she'd become made an unusual and rather sudden twitching motion. She'd been caught? But how? Why? She hadn't felt his presence here at all... And what did he mean by not doing the things she was most likely to do? Maybe he was right though. She'd been favoring rocks too much lately. Maybe she should have tried becoming a piece of grass instead for a change...
Akane waited... Maybe she could convince Mitsuoki that she wasn't actually here. But she flinched again when his foot began tapping. In a puff of smoke, Akane's true form reappeared sitting against the wall. Her fox ears were laid back in guilty fashion as she dared not to look up into Mitsuoki's eyes. And then it came. Mitsuoki knelt down as he always did whenever she'd done something he didn't approve of. The girl squeezed her eyes shut in anticipation of the resulting flick he would place upon her forehead, already feeling the stinging sensation even though he hadn't done anything yet. But contrary to her expectations, Akane felt Mitsuoki's hand slide over her head and begin rubbing her gently. Her ears perked back up out of curious confusion, if only a little as he complimented her, rather than laying down discipline. She'd done right? This was so strange! She was certain he'd be mad at her again. This was all just so super confusing and she dared look up when he stood.
Akane's attention shifted and she watched in awe at the strange illuminations of the monument, her eyes glowing and brimming with innocent curiosity. She looked up to Mitsuoki again when he said her name. "Mh! Mh!" Akane nodded two times energetically. He was sharing a secret with her! This was a super awesome secret and he didn't even want her telling Kira about it! She watched with fixed interest as the stone turned into downward stairs. She questioned nothing when Mitsuoki began to descend, following without hesitation. This was something new, curious, and exciting! And Mitsuoki wasn't even mad at her!
Unlike the lighted way, Akane gave pause and shied away at the murky black appearance of the doorway. To her it screamed danger even without Mitsuoki's warning about it. Akane nodded her understanding with a gulp, clinging behind him even though he'd cleared the way and the blackness of the door had vanished. She hesitated, letting go of Mitsuoki when he walked through the threshold, but quickly bolted through the door when she could still see him standing and alive on the other side.
"Woooow...!" Akane's jaw dropped at the sight of the area she'd entered, that Mitsuoki had brought her to. It was huge! Way bigger than any closed place she'd ever seen before. Kouta's house couldn't compare to this place at all! Taking in the vastness of the area, Akane spun around with her arms stretched out at her sides in a way that she never would have been able to do as a fox.
"Gol!" Akane shouted in excitement. Gol was here! Running up to the construct, Akane made quick work of getting up onto Gol's back, near its head. She watched in awe from her position on top of the construct as Gol turned at Mitsuoki's command and started transforming the entire blank area into a dense and colorful forest. "Oooh...!" Akane's eyes glimmered at the changes. She couldn't do this much yet. All she could do was change her own appearance or that of small objects. But one day... She was certain she'd be able to do this too.
"Tag?" It wasn't a question of confusion she gave Mitsuoki, but rather a question of curiosity. She knew what the game of tag was already since the kids in the village commonly played it. But this wasn't their normal place to play tag. Mitsuoki still explained the rules to her, even though she already knew them. She nodded her understanding to him. It wasn't until he'd actually started counting that Akane quickly descended Gol's back and dodged into the forest.
Akane wasn't even sure how to play tag with Mitsuoki. When she first started playing tag with the village kids she'd used her ability to transform herself but they'd told her it was cheating to pretend to be something other than yourself when you played tag. So she needed to run and keep from getting caught then. It worked pretty well with the kids but Akane wasn't sure how far she could get before Mitsuoki would catch up to her. And he would. She knew that. He was bigger and had longer legs. Two of her own steps usually equaled his. It was also why she mostly tried to sneak away, because running would just never work against Mitsuoki... Though the kids and her did always win at tag whenever he came along to play for some reason... Akane had become convinced he was never playing their game seriously...
Well but this was different. The forest was dense and packed near the floor. He was bigger so she could dip and weave between the brush better than he could. Maybe she could outmaneuver him because of her smaller build. It was worth a try Akane thought and she pressed further into the forest just as Mitsuoki's voice announced the number "ten".
"... Four ... Five... Six... Seven... Eight... Nine... Ten! Ready or not, here I come!" Mitsuoki announced and vanished from his current position, following the direction that he heard Akane bolt off in. It didn't take long for him to find her, there wasn't much ground that could be gained in ten seconds, and he had cleared that almost instantly with his first step. Akane would feel Mitsuoki's hand grab her shoulder and hear him say the harrowing, damning words... "Tag." in a calm tone.
Mitsuoki had jumped back several steps and said "You're turn. Start counting." with a smirk on his face. Mitsuoki would wait for Akane to turn around and begin counting down. Lucky for him that she's played this game with the other kids, so she at least could count to ten and backwards. Even then, when Akane had finished and turned around, she would find that Mitsuoki had actually not moved at all. If she asked why Mitsuoki hadn't hidden, he would say "You found me, now you have to tag me." with a light hearted tone. Mitsuoki would let Akane get within mere inches of him before flash stepping backwards and saying "Catch me if you caaaan!" in a teasing tone.
Every time Akane got near, Mitsuoki would flash step away, letting her just barely taste victory before having it completely vanish from her sight. Each time he flash stepped, he would make sure to keep himself in her line of sight, so she would be forced to move towards him. When Akane slowed down her attempts, Mitsuoki would say "You got a little closer that time. Try again." in a more encouraging tone.
What? No! How!? "Muuuh! No fair! You cheated!" Akane turned and pouted at Mitsuoki, shaking in frustration. He had to have cheated. There was no way he could have caught up to her so quickly after ten counts unless he'd been moving the whole time after she'd taken her eyes off of him! "Fine!" Akane stuck her tongue out before turning around to begin her countdown. She'd catch him one way or another and she wouldn't cheat like he did to do so. So she started counting. Math and counting might still be a struggle for her but Akane at least knew how to count to ten... "One... Two... Three..." She didn't cover her eyes after turning around. It wasn't really necessary since she couldn't see behind herself anyway. Instead she'd crossed her arms over her chest and silently fumed to herself about Mitsuoki's cheating while she continued to count.
"Nine... Ten!" Akane whipped around, fully prepared to chase Mitsuoki to the ends of the forest. But tripped and fell over her feet when she noticed he was still standing there. He hadn't even bothered to move. "What are you doing? You're supposed to run and hide!" Akane fumed. Did he think this was some kind of game? Or... well... Akane cocked her head to the side while she knocked the confusion of her own thoughts to the back of her brain. It didn't really matter, all she had to do was catch him and then it'd be his turn again. Which he was making it very easy for her by not running while he had the chance. Akane assumed a stance, arms bowed out, hands open and fingers folded like claws about to grab something. "Fine! I've got you!" Akane took a couple steps before launching herself at Mitsuoki. Her answer to his taunt. She'd catch him for sure with this.
Surprise washed over Akane when she landed face first in the dirt. Spitting out the soil. It tasted so real even though there'd been nothing like it in this room just a little while ago... Blinking twice, Akane looked up. "Muuh...!" Akane grumbled. He hadn't moved... Or rather he had but not in the way she'd expected him to. It'd almost been like he vanished and reappeared... How was he doing that? Picking herself up off the ground Akane continued the chase. Each time she thought she'd had him he would use his weird vanishing act to move further away. Her actions were becoming less and less refined the more she struggled to catch him.
Stopping to catch her breath, Akane puzzled over in her mind how he was avoiding her so easily. She couldn't come up with anything... She glared at Mitsuoki as only a child could glare when he taunted her again, this time with a strange sense of encouragement to his voice. She would catch him. She wasn't sure how but Akane was certain she could. If only she knew how he kept making those sudden vanishing movements. And the chase continued...
More and more attempts came, and Mitsuoki continuously used his flash step to get just a few feet out of Akane's range. Each and every failed attempt, he could see that Akane was getting more and more frustrated, and at this point, she was only trying because she had already invested so much energy into the act; and, she didn't want that energy to be wasted. "You need to slow yourself down." Mitsuoki said while dodging yet another attempt with his flash step. "You have failed the last ten times, and if you do not change the way to attack, you will fail the next ten times." his tone was calm, no longer teasing. He was using this frustration to teach Akane an important lesson for combat. "During times like this, where your opponent is vastly superior to you, you need to change focus. When you come at me, focus on what I am doing. Examine how I move, where I move, and when I move. Use that to make a new strategy." he said. If Akane was still trying to tag Mitsuoki, he would be saying that while flash stepping away.
Mitsuoki would continue using his flash step, which would keep him out of Akane's reach no matter what new trick she tried using. He would then say "Good, you've begun trying new tactics. These are still inferior. What do you do when your last trick fails?" Mitsuoki's question had a very simple answer. If Akane had said anything along the lines of trying something new, Mitsuoki would say "Yes. Now, do it." and if Akane had given anything else, he would say "No, you try something different."
After several more attempts, Mitsuoki would say "You are not utilizing all of your available tools, Akane. You would have a much easier time keeping your balance if you had a tail." recommending that Akane tried coming at him in her release form.
"But if I slow down then I really won't be able to catch you!" Akane protested against Mitsuoki's words. He didn't make any sense. How would slowing herself down help her catch him anyway? She tried to catch Mitsuoki again, to which he simply moved away again, stating that she could try as many as ten more times and she still wouldn't succeed. Akane responded by sticking her tongue out at him. She would succeed. He'd see. But the question was just how would she succeed? She had no way to keep him from moving in that weird teleporty fashion of his...
New strategy...? Fine she could try something new... she switched her posture, returning to a more relaxed state than she'd been using. And walked up to Mitsuoki. When she was no more than an arm's length away from him she stopped and looked up into his eyes. She jabbed her arm out as quickly as she could to grab onto him, maybe if she wasn't running when she tried she could catch him. Akane's hand closed around nothing but air. "Muuuh! This is impossible!" Akane shouted, throwing her outstretched arm back to her side and stamped her foot. Mitsuoki was standing some ten feet away again...
When new tricks fail? The answer was obvious. "I try something new." She spouted. Sure her bag of tricks had grown but... None of them were going to really help her in this. And they were playing a game so it wasn't like he wanted her to use any of her special abilities right? Akane walked up to Mitsuoki again but this time she walked past him. He was letting her do it so she might as well try... Maybe if he couldn't see her then she could get the jump on him and catch him that way. "Ragh!" Akane shouted as she launched herself at Mitsuoki from behind. And ended up with another mouthful of dirt... She didn't even say anything this time when she spat out the taste of minerals and got back up to her feet. She was beyond frustrated at this point. She was actually starting to feel a bit angry. It was a weird feeling, being angry...
"Huh? But I thought you said this was a game? I'm not allowed to use my abilities when its a game..." A child's rule, brought on by the village children after Akane's abilities had been deemed an unfair advantage in their games. He was giving her permission then? The only part about it that made sense was that he didn't mind because he was an adult and she wasn't. Fine, she preferred being able to use her abilities anyway. Her fox ears and bushy golden tail made an appearance. She could feel her senses becoming stronger.
Akane charged at Mitsuoki again but he was right. When he avoided her she didn't plant her face in the dirt this time. Instead she bounced on her tiptoes until she regained her balance, something she wouldn't have been able to do without her tail. She changed direction and charged at Mitsuoki again. This time she willed fire to emerge and it did. A wall of illusion based flames formed a horseshoe around Mitsuoki, making the path to Akane the only way out. She hadn't used this ability ever since the incident at the restaurant. Practiced it, but the use of fire still kind of frightened even her, so using it even now was still a bit nerve wracking for the girl even if she knew the flames weren't real.
Akane had said that she wasn't allowed to use abilities when it's a game, to which Mitsuoki said "For now, it's alright to use your powers. The village children do not have powers of their own, so it's unfair to use it against them." After which, Akane switched to her fox form and tried another charge towards Mitsuoki that resulted in another failed attempt. "Good, you did not fall, this time." he said. He could tell that Akane had already figured she would need another tactic and she tried one where she put Mitsuoki in some form of fire based illusion, making it seem as though the only way he could move was in Akane's direction. Mitsuoki quickly glanced up and noted that her attack wa a horse shoe, covering his sides but not the air above him. He would vanish once more and appear standing atop a tree branch before vanishing again to appear a little further away, on the ground.
"You are beginning to get better at using your abilities; however, you are using the wrong one. This technique that I am using is called Flash Step. It allows me to cover great deals of ground in very little amounts of time. For the Arrancar and Hollows, they have Sonido. The Quincy have Hirenkyaku. Even Shiro has a version of Flash Step that she can use. You will need to find yours in order to catch me." he would say before stepping again and appearing elsewhere, just out of reach of Akane.
While dodging Akane, if the fox girl asked Mitsuoki how to use her stepping technique, Mitsuoki would say "I cannot teach you that. Stepping is much like walking and swimming. You are born knowing how to do it, but you must find that ability within yourself. By being in a situation where you actually need the skill, it gets easier to unlock it."
"Ah...!" Akane's voice protested when she observed Mitsuoki heading up and out of the flames instead of towards her like she'd planned. "Gr..." Akane grumbled, splaying her hands and dispersing the illusion before continuing forward towards Mitsuoki's new position. She stopped about 5 feet from Mitsuoki's position. Try something new Alright. Fine! Something new it was then. Akane was beginning to disregard Mitsuoki's speech... A bad habit she had when focusing on a task.
She wasn't exactly sure how she'd come to discover this next ability of hers but it'd happened likely after Mitsuoki had brought her to Soul Society. Akane placed both hands forward and called forth more of her flames, but this time the flames turned a brilliant blue color. Forming a ball she shot it forward at Mitsuoki. The ball of blue flames hovered maybe two feet in front of Mitsuoki's face before a face of its own appeared to him. The face grinned wickedly at Mitsuoki while flame shaped arms and hands popped out of its sides and it proceeded to wave at him.
Perfect! Now that Mitsuoki was distracted, Akane could get in close and tag him! He was only five feet away... Akane began her charge, hands stretched forward to tag Mitsuoki while the malevolent spirit distracted him.
Akane had tried using another of her existing abilities, one that Mitsuoki did not actually know of as of yet. The fox girl had fired an attack that turned into a smiling and waving creature that he quickly realized would be a distraction. From the moment that it stopped rather than attack him, Mitsuoki had used flash step and moved himself even further away to avoid Akane's incoming attempt at tagging the soul reaper. "You are not listening to me." Mitsuoki said calmly, knowing that Akane would only frustrate herself more by continuing her attempts. "You must adapt to your opponent." he said in a very calm tone while seeming to look through the apparition.
Upon her next failed attempt, Mitsuoki would let out a sigh and pull out a small bag of sphere shaped, rock candies that were in varying colors and flavors. It was something that he had given Akane before, along with all of the other children in his village. "If you manage to catch me, I shall share with you." he would say and begin the process of popping three in his mouth. Naturally, while Akane was trying to get close to him, he would be stepping away and putting another candy in his mouth every time the last one disappeared after a couple minutes.
"Adapt? What does that mean?" Akane fumed in frustration at Mitsuoki. She shooed the ghostly flame away. It hadn't worked for some reason. Had utterly failed to distract Mitsuoki at all... She made another blind attempt at catching Mitsuoki which also failed, though she was getting better at keeping her balance now that her tail was out and waving according to her center to keep her coordinated. And then Mitsuoki did the unthinkable... He pulled out a bag of rock candies! "Wah!" Akane protested his unfairness, making another failed dash at him as he popped one of the candies into his mouth and explained his interest in sharing with her but only if she could catch him. It wasn't fair, she obviously couldn't catch him so why was he torturing her like this? Akane grumbled, and so did her stomach. She still hadn't eaten anything yet besides a bit of dirt and now Mitsuoki was taunting her with food.
Akane approached Mitsuoki with baby-doll eyes and palms up and forward. Couldn't he spare just one? She'd be more motivated to catch him if he gave her just one. Or so the childish gears in Akane's own selfish thought processes ticked. Akane growled and tried launching herself at Mitsuoki again when he taunted her by popping another candy in his mouth and even commented on its flavor.
A terrible realization struck Akane... If he ate too many of the rock candies then he wouldn't have any left to share even if she did manage to catch him somehow! Akane redoubled her efforts under the pressure of this thought, moving faster than she had thus far in order to catch him but still not actually stepping.
She was still doing the same thing that they had been doing for the past hour and had not made a single shred of progress towards their goal. Akane had begun to move faster, but the problem remained that every time she got within a short distance of the soul reaper, he used flash step to vanish yet again. After another hour of Akane failing to touch him, Mitsuoki had put another candy in his mouth and looked in the bag. "Oh my... Akane..." he said and turned the bag upside down. "It appears they are gone." he said in an innocent tone. Mitsuoki had heard the human girl's stomach complaining earlier and decided to say "I would go back to the village and make lunch; but, you have yet to catch me."
It was a slightly mean thing to do to someone who was hungry, but that hunger would have to be what it took to spur the girl on towards victory... or... at least... using her stepping technique, in this case. If Akane had failed to start even trying to use her stepping technique, Mitsuoki would tease her more, saying "I wonder how long it will be before that stew is finished... If it burns then I suppose I would have no choice but to make salad for lunch." knowing that Akane liked vegetables about as much as she licked being flicked on the head.
No more candies...!? No...! Nononono!!! Akane's next launch towards Mitsuoki was desperate, wild, and so poorly coordinated that she careened past where Mitsuoki had stood prior to moving and slid along the grass. Countless times she'd already told him it was impossible. She couldn't do what he was asking her to do. it just wasn't possible. Akane had never moved like that before and she didn't know how he did it, so how in foxfire's name was she supposed to copy his movements? She wanted to cry, would have cried if it would mean they could put a stop to this game. But she'd learned from past experiences that Mitsuoki wouldn't let up from this even if she turned on the waterworks... At the same time though she really didn't want to play this cruel game anymore.
"No!" Akane stood defiant, still always ten feet from Mitsuoki's position. "No salads!" Akane shouted, a kindling fire burning in her eyes. Why did she have to suffer for something she obviously couldn't do? Mitsuoki was expecting way too much out of her and she didn't like it. There was a certain heat to her eyes as she blinked back true and honest tears. Akane felt so much stress, so much pressure he'd put on her achieving this fantasy goal of his.
For an instant, Akane lost sight of the game, of the goal. The only thought in her mind was avoiding the bad end. The one where she only got to eat vegetables. It wouldn't stand. It couldn't stand! The fire in her eyes burned away her tears as she focused only on Mitsuoki, the empty bag, the meat stew... She started her charge once more.
But something bizarre happened. Something even Akane couldn't register properly until it was too late. Her body seemingly launched forward and for an instant she lost sight of Mitsuoki. And the world turned upside-down. Perhaps it was more accurate to say the world actually had gone upside-down. Akane blinked. Once, twice, in surprise. Mitsuoki was standing on the ceiling...? But she could see leaves too... No Mitsuoki wasn't upside-down, she was. What...!?
What Mitsuoki would have seen was Akane take her first footfall, right as an unusual ring of red particles that almost looked like flames would appear around Akane's body. With a whooshing sound Akane's body was propelled forward and into the bush behind him with a resounding POP.
Mitsuoki had found it funny how much Akane hated vegetables, but he was glad that it was a viable form of encouragement to use against her. The shock of having to eat nothing but green leafy things had perturbed Akane so greatly that she inadvertently shot herself forward, moving right past where Mitsuoki stood, and a little beyond that. She had ended up stepping herself straight into a bush, which was comical enough to warrant a small chuckle from him. "Well, that was interesting." he said while walking towards Akane. He would then lift her from the bush and set her down on the ground before brushing the leaves off of her. He would then rub her head and say "Okay, you win." with a gentle smile, even though she hadn't actually tagged him.
Mitsuoki would loudly say "Collapse Field!" causing everything in the room to glow a gently blue before vanishing, leaving only a flat, light tan floor to look at. He would then turn to Akane and say "Come. It is lunch time." while walking towards the entrance, which was almost a hundred meters away. The room's lighting had made it fairly easy to lose track of time, and it was so massive that distance became somewhat eskew as well.
Once back at Kouta's place, Akane would find herself being served a place of green stuff, orange stuff, red stuff, with raisins and sunflower seeds mixed in(Lettuce, Carrots, Tomatoes w/ Raisins & Sunflower Seeds). If she complained about not having stew, Mitsuoki would say "We will have stew... after we have our salad." in a very calm tone. If she looked to Kouta for help, the old man would already be eating his salad and show no more sympathy than the soul reaper. If Akane still hadn't finished her salad by the time Mitsuoki had finished his, she would have the wonderful pleasure of watching Mitsuoki show up with a steaming hot bowl of stew. Mitsuoki would say "You would be eating stew, had you finished your salad already." in a teasing manner. Once her salad was finished, Mitsuoki would reward her with stew AND a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was a reward for having used her stepping technique.
Akane stared at Mitsuoki from her awkward position as he approached and... laughed at her? Akane pouted while he plucked her from the bush and brushed the leaves from her. "Huh? But I haven't caught you yet." Akane protested Mitsuoki's words but quickly stifled her mouth with both hands at her own outburst. Idiot! Don't knock a gift horse in the mouth! If you won then that means you can have meat stew!
Just as quickly as the forest appeared, so too did it disappear with a single command from Mitsuoki. Akane watched in awe at his ability to control so much space at once. Akane wondered if she would be able to do that much some day too... "Un!" Akane and her grumbling stomach both agreed and she fell into step beside Mitsuoki. She wasn't sure how long they walked but they eventually got out of there. Akane again hesitating at the strange door she remembered seeing with the weird black liquid in it.
Akane stared with extreme disgust at the first dish placed before her. A colorful mixture of... vegetables... "You said I could have stew!" Akane glared angrily at Mitsuoki. "But I want stew!" Akane complained. Looking to Kouta for help in the matter the girl's face fell... Akane caught his eyes but he just shrugged, already busy working on his own share of vegetables. He knew better than to get between Mitsuoki and his child rearing techniques. Akane pouted. Kouta was on Mitsu's side then? She would have to fight this battle out on her own then....
Akane had come close to eating her vegetables. Close being that she'd taken her fork and stabbed one of the carrots and simply used it to move the other vegetables around on her plate. She kept glancing over at Mitsuoki to see if he'd break. She'd starve if she didn't eat stew. Akane's stomach growled at her in annoyance. And then he did what she'd been dreading... Mitsuoki brought out a bowl of stew. For himself! "Ah!" The fork Akane'd been playing with clattered to the edge of the plate and she stared longingly at the stew. At Mitsuoki who had promised she could have some but wasn't letting her have any until she got through her worst enemy... Vegetables. Despair struck when Kouta too went and came back with stew of his own. No fair! This wasn't fair! Akane grumbled, gently flicking at the carrot which was attached to her fork. Akane's stomach gave another empty growl. As if testing the waters, Akane laid her chin on the table next to her plate and used her tongue to slowly... cautiously lick the vegetables on it. In truth they didn't really taste that bad... Of course some vegetables were more gross than others but... Ugh! Akane coiled her human tongue around a raisin the best she could. Some parents might scold their children for playing with their food but Mitsuoki knew that if she really wanted that stew then Akane would tough it out and break eventually. And break she did... after Mitsuoki went and got a second helping of stew. The rock candy scare still fresh in her mind, Akane scooped a forkful of vegetables and shoved them grudgingly into her mouth. She didn't want to risk having no stew as well!
"Cookie!!!" Akane squealed. A rare and valuable treat! Kouta rubbed a finger into his ear, trying to return some hearing to it after Akane's way to overjoyed screech had nearly deafened him... She'd enjoyed the stew, maybe morose than she aught to but not having breakfast and then running around for several hours trying to catch Mitsuoki had made her quite hungry. She'd gobbled down a bowl and a half before the cookie reveal and she graciously accepted the cookie. But she savored the cookie. The taste was even better than rock candies and who knew when she'd be allowed to have another!
Mitsuoki had let Shiro enjoy her cookie and stew for the moment. She had learned to use her stepping technique when she needed to, but now she needed to learn to use it when she wanted. Tag would be fine for learning that, he could still get her to feel a greater sense of urgency with dinner; but, he also didn't want to pull that card too many times. Not that he was ever bluffing. Whenever Mitsuoki had told Akane that she would or wouldn't eat something, he always pulled through. One thing that she could never say is that he was a bad sport with that kind of punishment. He ate what Akane ate, whether that was something delicious or something that was pure foliage. Once Shiro had, had her fill of Stew, Mitsuoki would let her spend a couple more hours playing with the village children. He would tell her that she's allowed to play with them, but she wasn't allowed to use the technique she learned earlier since it was cheating. He didn't let her know when he was going to pull her away from them for more training, nor did he tell her that there was more training at all.
A little over two hours later, Akane would find that Mitsuoki was interrupting her play time and had used flash step to quickly grab her by the shoulder. "We have some more training to do. You do not mind me taking her away, do you?" Mitsuoki asked, to which all of the children allowed. Once inside the training room again, Akane would notice that Gol was not instructed to alter the terrain. Mitsuoki would tell Akane "We are going to be training in a much more dangerous method this time. I will be firing my Energy Bullet at you at a much slower speed than normal. Your objective will be to dodge them using that technique you learned earlier. If you manage to dodge a total of twenty five of them while using your technique, then tomorrow you will be allowed to skip your academic lessons." The lessons Mitsuoki spoke up were basic reading, writing, and math- things that Akane was forced to endure every other day.
Akane was very happy when Mitsuoki allowed her to head off and play with the other village children. One of the kids actually had come to Kouta's place to see if she was there since they'd promised to play today. Kouta had turned her away and told her to come by later since Mitsuoki had made plans for Akane in the morning. It'd completely slipped Akane's mind last night that she agreed to play after Mitsuoki's mention of training. She was going to make up for it now though. She had no problem obeying Mitsuoki's demand of keeping her new technique under wraps. She still hadn't quite figured out how it'd even happened. All She remembered was the desperate feelings and the unusual heat that'd risen inside of her...
Playing with the other kids in the village, Akane often lost track of time. Playing was fun and, well, time flew when one was having fun. As the current one to be IT Akane was just about to catch the girl who'd come to see if she could play today when Mitsuoki's hand landed on her shoulder. She heard the word training and tried to make a run for it but her attempt failed. Mitsuoki already had a firm hold on her, there was no way she could get away now... Though the kids understood Mitsuoki's desire, Akane still refused but his strength far exceeded her own so all she could realistically do was kick and scream while the the village children gave sympathetic waves until Akane disappeared out of sight.
Sitting on the training room floor for the second time that day, Akane folded her arms over her chest and defiantly looked away from Mitsuoki. Though no matter where she looked, all she could see was the training area around her. With nothing else to do besides defy... Akane heard every word Mitsuoki said. She turned around and stood up at his explanation for what their training would be. He was going to shoot at her? No way. He'd never done something like that before... why should she believe he would do something like that now? "But I don't know how I did it..." Akane protested. It was honesty, she was still trying to pick apart what'd happened earlier to send her flying like that. The force of it hadn't felt like an external influence so she doubted Mitsuoki had caused it to happen. "Besides, you can't shoot at me because I'm still just a kid." She was confident in her defiance. She'd never once seen Mitsuoki raise his hand to any of the village children, let alone herself. There was no way she would believe he'd intentionally hurt her.
Akane had said "Besides, you can't shoot at me because I'm still just a kid." Ohhhh, how wrong she was. Mitsuoki pointed his fist in Akane's direction and shot off a bala at roughly one-twentieth the speed it normally went, making it as slow as a Cero; though, by untrained human standards, that was still fast as hell. The bala would likely singe a few strands of her hair as it passed before hitting the ground and exploding, leaving a small crater in its wake. The crater would quickly glow light blue and repair itself. "No obstructions in this arena, Akane. Hiding is not an option." he would say in a cold tone just after the doorway was blocked by a wall of stone.
Mitsuoki had pointed his fast towards Akane again and fired another shot, this one having the same speed but much less damaging power. "The point of this training is to get you accustomed to using that technique." he would say while firing bala one after another. Each time Akane was hit, it would feel the same as Mitsuoki's flicking her really hard. Not enough to break skin, but definitely hard enough to not feel good. The attacks would keep coming and on occasion he would fire two of them in rapid succession. While his primary goal was to help Akane get used to using her stepping technique, he was also helping her build a resistance to weak attacks like this.
