She still didn't know how Mitsuoki felt about her, but one thing was certain. Shiro had feelings for this Shinigami, as wrong as it seemed to be. He was technically a ghost or something already what with being a Shinigami, so even to her it didn't make much sense... If he would at least let her help out whenever he deemed it acceptable, Shiro would at least be happy with that. "Like with the training... or shopping... you know stuff like that.." Shiro's voice trailed, face turning a deeper shade of red. 'Okay just shut up now! You're making yourself look like an idiot...!' Shiro thought to herself, turning away to prevent Mitsuoki from seeing her face. She didn't want to chance him seeing whatever expression she was currently making because even she didn't know what it was right now... All she knew was her heart rate had increased...
All healed up! Akane had been calm during Mitsuoki's healing session and now she felt refreshed and revitalized, not that she needed anymore energy than she already had. Even Shiro seemed to have tired of her unfathomable stamina. Maybe it was something about the human body, but Akane felt like jumping around and playing now. And she did. Without warning, Akane jumped out of Mitsuoki's lap. Landing just out of reach of a quick grab, Akane bolted around the crater. She glanced a large rounded rock protruding from the crater's wall in passing and had a sudden idea. Akane dashed up the side of the crater and right to the edge. With a bit of concentration the girl seemingly disappeared, replaced by a rounded rock similar in appearance to the one she'd noticed. Without legs or arms to keep her momentum going, Akane the rock rolled and bounced back down to the bottom of the crater. Upon reaching the bottom, Akane popped out of rock form enthralled by the experience and proceeded to repeat the action.
"Oh yeah... She can do that apparently... That would be why it took so long for us to get back..." Shiro noted to Mitsuoki when she observed Akane's behavior after escaping Mitsuoki's hold. "She was hiding as a dinner plate on the kitchen when table I finally found her..." Shiro exhaled, revealing the reason why she felt so exhausted. It was more mental than physical thanks to her constant training. Unfortunately babysitting had never been something Shiro ever experienced. Watching Akane romp around, it was obvious she had the mentality of... well of a baby fox.
Shiro had tried giving Mitsuoki back his letter, stating that his request was being declined. At this point, Akane had already jumped off Mitsuoki lap and began running to the top of the crater before turning into a rock and rolling down it. Shiro had told him that she had shapeshifting powers, and that her hiding as a plate had been the reason it took them so long to get back. The fact that Akane had chosen an appropriate place had made it worse. Mitsuoki had turned his gaze back to the letter and then, instead of grabbing the letter, grabbed Shiro's wrist and pulled her down.
Shiro would land sitting with her legs to either side of Mitsuoki, as though she were riding a horse. They would be face to face when Mitsuoki slid his hands into the back of her knees and pulled her closer. He would then rest a hand on her cheek and angle her face to line up with his, but he would be staring at the red mark on her forehead. After that, Mitsuoki would pull Shiro's head into his chest while he began healing her bruise. Akane was a human, like Shiro; but, Akane had spent great deals of time around Mitsuoki, and was easier for him to heal.
Mitsuoki would say "Hold still." and continue his treatment of her bruise. Five minutes in, his other arm would swing around her back and leave her in an embrace. "This will make things much more complicated for me." he said softly. "The soul society is not so relaxed as Hueco Mundo. Having a small fox in my room was one thing, since my roommates were quite fond of her. I have moved from the kidoshu, to the third squad. I do have my own room, but human children are quite rambunctious. It will not be so simple as keeping her in my room." Mitsuoki's embrace would tighten just a bit, somehow getting warmer as a result. "I will have to think of something." he said softly. While Mitsuoki did pull her into an embrace, he never did say that he would rely on her, or anything close to it.
Meanwhile...
While Mitsuoki had pulled Shiro into his completely non-sexual hold that no bystanders would ever misconstrue for a romantic advance, thirty six had shown up with a bag of gummy candies in the shape and flavor of various berries. He had sensed Mitsuoki's spiritual pressure flaring up and thought that he might be fighting a hollow, and decided to come and see the show. Much to his surprise and disappointment, he had arrived to see a fox-human-child-thing turning into a rock repeatedly, and Mitsuoki holding his not-girl-friend in a very romantic way. He looked over at Akane and blinked a few times, connecting the dots. Shiro, Mitsuoki, and a fox-human-thing... the fox was probably Akane, since it didn't look like Mitsuoki or Shiro- obviously not either of their children. Thirty seven had sat at the top of the hill and offered Akane one of his gummy treats. If she took it, he would gently rub her head and say "Welcome back." in a kind tone. After twenty minutes of Shiro and Mitsuoki hugging it out, thirty seven would shout "Oi! You two gonna start making out, we gonna do a family activity, or just keep watching the grass grow!?" just to tease them.

Wha-wa-wa-!?" Shiro, caught by surprise at Mitsuoki's action, fell to her knees upon the Shinigami's lap when he pulled at her arm. If she'd been embarrassed before, it paled in comparison to how she felt now. In some ways she was glad she'd chosen to wear a skirt rather than a dress, but that also made their close proximity that much more precarious and far more easy to misunderstand...! She still held the letter in her hand, but given his reaction... perhaps he accepted it? The fact that she couldn't do as he asked in the letter? But then why was this happening? Did he have feelings for her that he wasn't letting her know about? Shiro's heart raced, her vision lost focus, and her mind began to wander into dangerous territories. Things were only made more complicated as Shiro's anticipation grew. What was she expecting exactly? Mitsuoki held her close, pulling her closer with a swift movement at the back of her knees which only served to deepen the reddening of her face even further. He held her cheek. Shiro closed her eyes, her heart screaming.
Her eyes glanced open when she felt herself pulled to his chest. She felt... disappointed? But why? What had she expected from him exactly? He was healing the bruise on her forehead? If that's all he wanted to do couldn't he have done that without getting so close? Now Shiro felt slightly irritated. Only slightly, for some reason, despite her dashed expectations, she still felt unusually comfortable sitting with him in what others would obviously misinterpret as a very daring position to take in public...
"Mhm..." Shiro agreed. She wasn't going to move anywhere. Not right now anyway. "Eep...!" Shiro squealed lightly when Mitsuoki's arm moved to her back. He was right... from what she understood, or could gather at least... A human and Shinigami in a relationship seemed at its very core values to be at odds with itself. "I don't mind... I know a Shinigami and a H-" She stopped herself after realizing what Mitsuoki had just stated. He was talking about Akane? Good Gods what was she thinking!? "Y-yeah... I guess you're right... But Hueco Mundo isn't really a place for humans to begin with..." There was a twinge of sadness to Shiro's voice when she responded to Mitsuoki's reasoning.
Rolling down the hill, dashing back up and doing it again. There was a certain, very inexplicable thrill about being able to change into a rock and roll down a hill. Akane'd just gotten to the top again when she noticed Mitsuoki was there. Confused, she looked down into the crater, spotted Mitsuoki down there as well. This must be the other Mitsuoki. the one Mitsuoki usually called Thirty Seven. He offered her a familiar looking snack which she happily accepted, squatting on her feet while using the hand not accepting candies to balance herself in tripod fashion. The candies tasted different than she remembered. Different, but definitely tasty. It didn't occur to her that the taste buds she now had would differ from the ones she'd had as a genuine fox. Finishing a few candies, Akane bounced around to Thirty Seven's back after also accepting some head rubs. Jumping on and up to his shoulders, Akane rested both arms over his shoulder to accept further treats. She could also accept further head rubbing this way without the chance of losing her balance.
Shiro became lost in the moment. Her feelings about the situation were still very much confused as she couldn't tell if the way she felt extended to Mitsuoki's own feelings about her or not. Then Thirty Seven's announcement arrived. Knowing someone was obviously watching, Shiro became aware of the physically misunderstand-able situation and quickly sought to remedy. Pushing herself back and away from Mitsuoki, Shiro's face becoming crimson and hot. In her hurry to change the position they were in, Shiro completely forgot where and how she sat. With her legs previously folded to the side under herself, Shiro's hurried actions only proved to make an embarrassing situation even worse. She hadn't made a move to stand, but rather to push away and sit elsewhere, but because of this the girl's legs didn't move out properly. Instead of the intended results, Shiro fell backwards onto her back and bumped her head. Her feet were on the ground now but her knees raised up, causing the skirt she wore to fall up to her waist, revealing the pale blue of her underwear for all the world to see...
"...Ow." Shiro's hands reached up to rub her head where it'd hit the ground. Why had Thirty Seven chosen to wait until just then to announce his presence? Shiro looked to Thirty Seven, then to Mitsuoki. It was then, staring between her legs towards Mitsuoki, that the horror struck her face as realization fell into place. Her angle was a perfect showoff. Her skirt hiked up far enough in her fall, there was very little chance it covered anything properly at this point...! Making a quick readjustment, Shiro pulled her feet back under herself, on the ground and away from Mitsuoki's lap while both hands sought to move the skirt into a more covering position. She didn't even dare to look at either Mitsuoki or Thirty Seven at this point. Her face felt so hot she swore one could cook an egg on her temple right now...
Akane watched. Shiro was acting funny. She decided to try it too, releasing her hands from Thirty Seven's back and allowing herself to fall backwards. "Ah...!?" Akane cried as her head hit the ground. This wasn't fun, not with the dull pain now piercing her skull. Why had Shiro done this she wondered.
Thirty Seven gave no response to Shiro pushing off of Mitsuoki and landing in a very revealing position. He had figured that any comment he made would warrant being sent to the moon, so he instead turned his attention to Akane who had let herself fall backwards to the same position, and quickly figured out that it wasn't particularly comfortable. He had sat down and picked up the young one and rested her on he lap. "You're alright." he said in a soft tone while gently rubbing the spot on her head where she hit it. He also pulled out another gummy and put it in her hand.
Mitsuoki had blinked when Thirty Seven had made his announcement, not exactly sure what he meant by 'making out' since he wasn't up to date on all the modern terms. It was then that Shiro had pushed off of him and hit her head, while also being unaware of the fact that her undergarments were in perfect view of him. They weren't so easily seen by Thirty Seven due to his angle, but even he could see just a little of them. Mitsuoki had stared at Shiro through the gap in her legs, ignoring the pale blue fabric and locking eyes with her. Shiro's face had turned extremely red and she quickly moved to sit up and rectify her position, avoiding any and all eye contact with either of the men.
Mitsuoki had stood up and bent over slightly while extending his hand to Shiro to help her up. "Thirty Seven is correct, we should celebrate Akane's return. Will you join us?" he said in his normal tone, as though he hadn't seen Shiro's underwear for the second time. If Shiro had taken Mitsuoki's hand, he would help her up. If not, he would think nothing of it. Afterwards, he would walk over to where Akane was and gently take her by the hand, pulling her up to a standing position. "Come." he would say calmly, and Thirty Seven would get up as well. The place that he would take them all would be the restaurant that they had been at during Mitsuoki and Shiro's second meeting, where the same waitress from last time would be present.
The tears flowed freely. It was a response Akane wasn't quite used to but it seemed to be a thing that accompanied pain. Though tears fell from her eyes like a normal child's, Akane made no further verbal complaints besides the initial one she'd made upon hitting her head. Thirty Seven's voice was reassuring and even helped to alleviate some of Akane's more mental pain. She didn't even complain when he picked her up and sat her in his lap. Especially since he'd offered her more candies after doing so. Gladly accepting the treats, Akane put them in her mouth. With no gummys in her hand, she reached out with palm up to receive more from Thirty Seven. Even if he didn't she'd keep her palm held out until he proved to her that what held them was empty.
Had he seen!? What would she do if he'd seen them!? Shiro couldn't think straight anymore. How could she have been so careless as to allow herself to be exposed in such a way. "It's fine, it's no different than a swimsuit..." She tried to convince herself, to reason away her embarrassment. But she knew all too well that underwear and swimsuits were fundamentally different. For one thing swimsuits had thicker fabric than underwear... They were designed to get wet and not be seen through unlike underwear, and most importantly swimsuits were meant to be seen while underwear was not... Shiro's reasoning failed her miserably as her own thoughts countered her own internal argument.
Lost in her own boiling embarrassment, Shiro started at Mitsuoki's words. He hadn't seen then? She dared a glance at Mitsuoki. It was hard to read him even now... His expression didn't hold any indications of ulterior motive. Was she just paranoid and overreacting then? "Wha-ah...! Yes of course...!" Shiro flustered, taking Mitsuoki's offered hand to help the girl to her feet. His hand was warm in hers and the hold lasted just long enough to get Shiro to her feet before it was gone, leaving her wanting... wanting what? She grabbed her hand and drew it back. Shiro needed to get her emotions in check.
Akane, still looking for handouts from Thirty Seven, looked up to Mitsuoki when he appeared with Shiro trailing a small distance behind him. He took her hand, the one looking for handouts, and lifted the small fox-girl to her feet. She didn't question it. Just gave Mitsuoki a curious gaze. Were they going somewhere? She figured it must be so when even Thirty Seven got up at Mitsuoki's words. Akane followed alongside Mitsuoki, doing her best to force his hand to swing along with her own as they walked together. A smile played across her face. There might not be the same things to do as before with her previous body but there were so many things she could do now that she was the same as Mitsuoki and Shiro.
Shiro recognized the restaurant. She'd been here before. Meeting Mitsuoki here by chance, though now it was by design. Shiro walked in along with Mitsuoki and Akane. Even the same waitress as before greeted them and took their drink orders. Shiro ordered a Strawberry soda for herself. When the waitress looked to Akane for her drink order, all Akane did was give the waitress a blank stare and a big toothy smile. "She'll have some apple juice..." Shiro chimed in for the child, to which the Waitress nodded agreement before leaving them with menus to look over while she prepared and brought back their drinks. With the menu in front of her, Shiro began looking over the options the restaurant offered.
There were so many people...! She'd been placed in a chair at the table but what time was this to be sitting down? Slowly... ever so carefully... Akane slid down under her chair. Mitsuoki and Shiro seemed interested in sitting while looking at the fancily designed papers the lady had given them but she wanted to know where all these delicious smells were coming from. Patience wasn't on the menu as the girl dipped under the table and off her chair. Weaving between the table legs before the two noticed what she was doing. With a quick dart from their assigned table to the next, Akane's ears and tail were out again. On all fours, she inched silently passed several tables before reaching a door with an unusually circular window near its upper center. The door had a metal plate at the bottom and no handle to be seen anywhere. Curious, it didn't look like any door she'd ever seen before... In fact it almost seemed to be a pair of doors meeting in the center. There was a crack, which Akane quickly investigated. Through it she could see into the kitchen. People were in there! the smell of foods was strong here. But still... how was she supposed to open this thing? It didn't occur to her that the doors could simply be pushed until she noticed someone approaching the door through the crack while holding two large trays. Akane backed away, the door swung open and the waiter stepped out, leading with his foot. Akane looked at her own feet. They didn't look like that she noticed, wiggling her newfound toes. Actually even Shiro and Mitsuoki didn't seem to have the same feet. Well they did actually but for some reason they were covered. She reasoned that maybe her own feet would look like that too if they were covered as her eyes watched the waiter walk out into the serving area.
So all she needed to do was push? Akane tried the door, pressing on it with both hands. It didn't budge... But she'd just seen someone come out through this door... why wasn't it working? The waiter walked back after delivering his order and kicked open the door opposite the one he'd exited from. Akane craned her neck in curiosity. Was this some sort of trick door? Moving over to the other door she applied pressure. It moved inward! She released and the door shut smoothly. So they were two doors but only made to go one way? Ingenious! Akane had never seen one way doors like this before! She pushed on the door one more time but instead of letting it close again, she entered. Right into the restaurant's kitchen area...
Shiro had agreed to come along, which almost earned a snarky comment from Thirty Seven. The mod soul had swallowed his words since he didn't want to crack a joke so soon after Shiro had just shown obvious signs of embarrassment. Mitsuoki didn't resist when Akane had been trying to make their hands swing while they were walking, and entertained the act for some time. They had arrived and been greeted by the same waitress from last time, who said 'Welcome Back' when she saw them. Mitsuoki could see through her smile, it was a lie. She was having trouble with something, but was forcing herself to appear happy so the customers didn't feel uncomfortable.
Being seated, Mitsuoki had taken over his Gigai, causing Thirty Seven to be removed from the situation. Shiro had asked for a strawberry soda and ordered some apple juice for Akane. Mitsuoki had asked "May I have some of the Chai Tea, please?" to which the waitress said she'd be happy to get him some. When she returned and gave them menus, Mitsuoki had looked at his and took his eyes off of the child next to him- which was a bad idea.
Akane had taken the opportunity to slide away and make her way into the kitchen, to which she would be met with several people moving around, preparing various dishes. One of them would look over the edge of the counter, down at the child and raise an eyebrow. He would then look towards another american and shout, in english, "Ey, Shawna- who child is dis!?" The woman had given no reply, so the man said "SHAWNAAAAAAAAAA" in a higher pitched, teasing tone. The woman shouted back "I HEARD YOU THE FIR TIME, DIN' I TELL YOU NOT TO CALL ME DAT!? I DON'T KNOW WHA CHU TALKIN 'BOUT WITH SOME CHIL UP IN HERE!" Meanwhile, outside, Mitsuoki had lowered his menu and glanced to where Akane was sitting. "Shiro. We appear to be missing someone." he said in a calm tone, as though a missing child was no cause at all for alarm.
"What?" Shiro lowered her menu and glanced over to Mitsuoki. What did he mean by they were missing someone...? Mitsuoki, herself, and... Shiro's eyes widened. The meaning behind Mitsuoki's statement finally clicked. Looking to the seat where Akane should be, Shiro very quickly noticed the girl had vacated her position in the chair. Looking around the restaurant, Shiro couldn't see the girl anywhere. Where could she have gone? "We need to find her!" Shiro turned back to Mitsuoki, panic rising in her voice. Why was he so calm about this? Foxes didn't know better when it came to human society so more than likely Akane still didn't know better. She could be anywhere, getting into anything at this point.
Getting out of her own seat, Shiro got down below the table level to look through the other table legs around the restaurant figuring she might be able to spot Akane better this way. The girl was small and could easily be missed, but despite the vantage this gave her visually, Shiro still couldn't locate Akane within the dining area. Where exactly had the child gone?
She'd been spotted. Akane froze for a second, but when it didn't seem as if they were making any move to capture her, she resumed her exploration of the kitchen. She was still cautious about being seen. The right person seeing her might cause them to try and capture her. The smells were strong, the aroma of different foods being prepared was enticing. Akane dipped into the back, beyond the server's preparation area and into the grill section of the kitchen. Here humans were flipping different things on heated tables that smelled amazing. She could even smell the familiar aroma of fried potatoes, cooked beef and hams, even some other aromas she didn't recognized but still smelled very tasty.
"Hey... what are you doing back here little one? Where are your parents?" Akane froze up again when another voice, softer than the first ones reached her ears. She looked up to see a lady in uniform. It was different than the one the lady who'd greeted them at the table wore. More than anything Akane noticed that instead of just talking to her, the lady was also advancing and looked interested in catching or picking her up. Nope. Akane wouldn't have it. She'd just gotten back here and besides, she didn't know this woman. There was no way Akane would let the lady lay her hands on her. She waited just long enough for the woman to get close before dodging out of the way and underneath some equipment. Akane dipped under a designated bread table, accidentally knocking it over as she exited out the other side. Which caused the lady to trip backwards and fall into one of the cooks, who was in the middle of flipping some hash-browns at that very moment... The hash-browns flew, right into the face of a waitress who had just picked up a tray full of ready dishes to take out into the dining area for a group of customers. The shock of suddenly getting hot hash-browns tossed into her face sent the waitress into a distressed panic. Losing the precarious balance she held the tray with, the dishes piled onto her serving tray crashed to the ground. The waitress screamed. A startled Akane dashed off deeper into the kitchen.

Shiro's head lifted up at all the noise coming from the kitchen. "No way... it couldn't be..." a horrified look played over Shiro's face, turning pale as a ghost when she looked towards Mitsuoki. "I think I know where Akane may have gone off to..." Shiro stated to Mitsuoki with grim realization and composure. If it was the case, and Akane was in the kitchen doing gods knew what, then likely the damages were already dealt. Shiro's haste to find Akane quickly turned into a hesitation. She didn't want to know, didn't want to find out what had happened. Shiro didn't even want to get up off the floor now that the likely location for Akane had been determined. And the child was in their charge, even if they wanted to claim that she wasn't, they'd entered the restaurant so their responsibility to the child would be undeniable...
"I don't want to do this... You should go get her..." Shiro slipped back into her chair and sank. The heavy embarrassment already beginning to trickle into her features even as the few heads that'd turned to observe Shiro's odd behavior started to put two and two together after hearing the ruckus coming from the kitchen. "Please..." Shiro pleaded, trying to hide her face from the onlookers.
Akane deemed the kitchen a dangerous place. Everything was suddenly falling, people were screaming and shouting. And now it seemed like she was the target as everyone stopped what they were doing to try and catch her. Akane bounced off cabinets, cupboards, other stationary tables in the kitchen which were just as solidly placed as the bread table had been and fell over just as easily... Akane was starting to panic. This investigation was quickly gathering unwanted results. Locating the doors she'd originally entered from, Akane made a beeline for them. Reached them just as another set of hands narrowly missed grabbing her around the waist. And smacked right into the left side door. Dazed, Akane remembered why one door would open while the other wouldn't. She'd smacked into the one that opened inward, not outward. Recovering herself, Akane made to rush through the proper door this time... "Gotcha!" A deep male voice and a pair of strong hands grabbed Akane, causing her to yelp in surprise. She'd been caught! Akane struggled, kicking and flailing while uttering incoherent sounds. "Miitsuu!" Akane pleaded for help using the only word she actually knew.
Mitsuoki had saw the panic in Shiro's expression and he had marveled at how something so small could cause so much fear in someone. A commotion heard coming from the kitchen had caused Shiro to look towards it with terror and say that she thinks she knew where Akane was. Shiro had requested that Mitsuoki went to take care of the situation, which she may or may not regret when she found out how he dealt with it. "Very well." he said and stood up, still being as cool, calm, and collected as before.
When he got to the door, he heard a loud 'thud' hitting the one he was about to open, and then he heard someone shouting that he got something. After that he heard Akane shouting his nickname and promptly opened the door, walking in with a fairly cold stare. Outside, the waitress had been blinking and looking at the door while standing still at the table she was taking orders for. In the kitchen, Mitsuoki looked around and saw all the chaos and then glared at Akane with a very, very cold stare. The man holding her began shouting "HEY IS THIS BRAT Y-" Mitsuoki held his hand up and made him stop. His hand then changed form, the middle finger curling down and being held in place by his thumb. It moved closer to Akane's forehead and, upon being released, the nail popped against her skull for a flick. "Bad." he said in a tone that was as cold as his expression, and quite harsh. It was something that he had done several times when she was a fox, so she should remember that he only did that when she did things she wasn't supposed to.
"WHO THE HELL'S GONNA PAY FOR ALL THIS SHIT!? YOU GOT ANY IDEA HOW FUCKING LONG IT TOOK-" "One second." Mitsuoki interrupted the man and reached into his breast pocket. He pulled out an item that looked like a lighter and pushed the button down, with a duck-shaped head shooting from it, accompanied by a bright light and a loud 'banging' sound. The waitress outside was so shocked she let out a yelp and dropped her pen and notepad. Mitsuoki took Akane from the stunned man and walked out of the kitchen, taking Akane back to the chair in his arms, and sat her down. "Stay." he said and took his own seat. If Shiro had asked about the banging sound, her answer would quickly be answered when a man walked out the kitchen complaining about a pair of raccoons that were running wild in the kitchen. The waitress would look at him with a confused expression. If Shiro asked what the explosion was, Mitsuoki would say "Something." before picking his menu back up.
The door opened, Mitsuoki appeared. Akane felt relieved he'd answered her calling so quickly. On the other hand the expression he gave Akane filled her with a strangely familiar foreboding sense of... something. Her suspicions were proved accurate when Mitsuoki formed his hand and reached towards her with a flick to the forehead. "Awa..." Akane uttered, halting her attempts to struggle from the grip of the restaurant employee who currently held onto her. Almost like magic, the girl became passive and unusually cooperative. She understood her position. Mitsuoki had not approved of her behavior or what she'd done. What followed was something unique to Akane. Seeing Mitsuoki perform his memory altering ritual with the device was something she hadn't witnessed before, though she closed her eyes at the last second when the object Mitsuoki held went off with a bang.
Immediately after that, Mitsuoki was lifting Akane from the employee's grasp. She didn't fight it, didn't try to get away. 'Bad' was one of a few distinct words she at least semi understood. She was calm and quiet, even when Mitsuoki placed her back into the seat at the table. Akane followed Mitsuoki with her eyes, shifting them over to a seemingly confused Shiro before lowering them to the table in front of her. 'Stay' Another word she kind of understood. Mitsuoki usually uttered it to her when he didn't want her going off on her own. So she was supposed to sit in the chair then? That was fine she guessed, the kitchen was apparently a dangerous place to be anyway...
"What... did you do? And... what was that noise just now?" Shiro asked. Then the man walked out of the kitchen complaining about raccoons. "Raccoons...?" Shiro asked, unable to hide her confusion. How could all that racket with Akane in the kitchen actually have been about a pair of raccoons? Something...? Was that even a proper answer at this point? Shiro glanced from Mitsuoki to a now seemingly submissive Akane before picking up her menu again.
"Sorry about that. They were having some issues in the kitchen." Their waitress returned placing the ordered drinks in front of them. "Raccoons?" Shiro asked the waitress with a quizzical look. "Yes, apparently so." The waitress responded. Strange... Mostly because it'd been Akane back there causing all the fuss... She looked to Mitsuoki again, trying to figure out the puzzle. What had he done exactly? Though if her memory did serve her well, it was possible Mitsuoki had done something to make these people forget about the chaos Akane's venture had caused. But raccoons? Where had that idea come from? Opting to give the group a little more time to figure out what they wanted in light of the kitchen incident, the waitress continued on to another of the tables she was serving.
Akane looked up at the placement of the drink in front of her. For a moment she was confused. It had liquid inside and it smelled of apples. But apples were solid and this was clearly not apples... Shiro had a different drink Akane noticed. Shiro picked up a hollow cylinder that'd been provided by the waitress and Akane watched with interest as she placed it into the cup before her. She saw the liquid in Shiro's drink rise up through the cylinder and immediately an interest in wanting to try it for herself arose. Akane grabbed one of the remaining two cylinders and plunked it into the cup in front of her that held the apple smelling liquid inside. She placed her lips over the cylinder, same as Shiro but nothing happened... Was there some trick to making the liquid come up through the cylinder? She watched Shiro again. She was doing something with her mouth to do that... Was she breathing in or something? Akane decided to try it. Placing her lips on the straw again, Akane breathed in through her mouth. The results were... spectacular to say the least. For an instant there was a sudden flavor of apples over her tongue. In the very next instant, Akane was coughing and spluttering as the liquid continued down her throat and into the wrong tube as she unintentionally inhaled the drink. It tasted good, but having the apple juice go down the wrong way was a very unpleasant experience. With one final cough, Akane got the remainder of the juice out of her lungs, her eyes watering from the incident.
"Slowly!" Shiro cried, patting Akane on the back and removing the girl's glass of apple juice from the scene while she fell into a fit of coughing. "You can't inhale it like that. You need to drink it carefully so you don't breath it in by accident..." Shiro explained, though she wasn't sure if Akane would actually understand her words.
Akane felt Shiro's concern in her voice. And despite whatever she said to follow Akane's fit of coughing, one thing was certain. The juice tasted good and she would try a bit more cautiously the next time to get it out through the straw now that she knew how it worked. Shiro returned the glass to Akane once her cough subsided and the girl took it back in her hands. She eyed the liquid carefully as it rose through the straw, making certain it didn't go too far too fast. It was a vastly different method of drinking than she was used to but also strangely convenient. Unlike how she'd drink when she was a fox Akane could drink through this straw without getting it all over her face for a change. Savoring and saving for the actual meal wasn't a concept Akane knew. By the time the waitress returned to actually take their orders, she'd already finished her first glass of juice.
"You must be hungry today. One refill, and are you ready to order?" The waitress commented, noting the empty glass in front of Akane and turning to Mitsuoki and Shiro for their orders. "Yes please. I'd like to try the breakfast ramen bowl, over easy." Shiro ordered. It'd struck out at her on the menu. A ramen option with maple bacon, eggs, sausage, and other assorted items typically found in American breakfasts. As for what to order Akane since she couldn't exactly speak for herself yet... Shiro figured Mitsuoki knew better about what the girl liked to eat so she'd leave Akane's order up to him.
Mitsuoki had watched Shiro help Akane through her choking fit with cold, seemingly uncaring eyes. It was his standard way of operating, to examine the issue at hand before acting on it. Akane had quickly adapted to the new technology, so no further action was required that what Shiro had provided. Mitsuoki had taken a sip of his tea and made no comment to the flavor, though, he did think it was good.
"I'll have the tonkotsu ramen with fried chicken, please. Some chicken nuggets for her." he said when the waitress had taken their orders and Shiro finished her's. He had figured that if Akane hadn't known how to use a straw, she probably didn't know how to use utensils or chopsticks- he would have to teach her later. Once the waitress had moved away, Mitsuoki took another sip of the tea and said "Kikanshinki" in a calm tone. He then reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out a small, lighter-looking object.
"It's a memory replacement device used when humans see shinigami or hollows. The memory generated is completely random, but is always based on the limitations of whatever the target is willing to believe. So, for example, someone like me would never believe that a giant, purple, armor wearing, dragon with four heads would cause any damage at all, because I know it doesn't exist. But, for someone else, like a child, it very well may be the replacement memory. When used on multiples, the device takes into accounts all of their collective limits to fabricate the memory. Quite impressive a device, it was made by the former head of our research and development group." he explained before putting the item away.
“Kikanshinki…?” Shiro cocked her head slightly to one side with a curious look adorning her face. Since the start she’d been vaguely aware that Shinigami had some sort of memory wiping or altering ability, but until just now she’d never figured out exactly what it was. Curious as she’d been at the time, she hadn’t chanced the risk of having her own memories wiped after the encounter with a Shinigami at her old residence…
Listening was fun and all but Akane couldn’t understand a word these two were saying so when the food arrived, she quickly took to examining the brown and crusty looking bits placed in front of her by the waitress. They were hot to the touch and even radiated a bit of heat into the air. Lowering her chin to the table, Akane stared at the nuggets for a moment, trying to figure out what they were. The aromas of this peculiar food were mixed together and with her weak human sense of smell it took her a moment to figure out why it seemed familiar. On the one hand the flaky brown nuggets smelled of baked bread, on the other hand the familiar smell of chicken rose up to greet her senses. Since the other two had also received their food, Akane looked over to observe Mitsuoki. Was there a trick to eating these or could she just eat them as they were? They didn’t look like they were wrapped in anything inedible… Mitsuoki picked up some sort of utensil. Akane had seen him use these before but she still didn’t understand the reason why he chose to eat using them.
Ultimately Akane decided to have a go at handling food. With her right hand she reached up to her plate, wrapping her fingers around and pulling off one of the nuggets. Bringing it closer to her face she noticed how it felt warm in her hand and was even a bit squishy. Opening her mouth wide so she could fit the entire thing, Akane pushed the nugget into her mouth. Chewing was much the same as it’d been when she was a fox, but the flavors were something different to behold. It seemed familiar, almost like something she’d eaten before. But the taste of food as a human rather than as a fox was clearly a different experience entirely.
Akane’s eyes widened, glistening with excitement. This chicken nugget was fascinatingly delicious! In an instant the girl had stuffed as many of the golden breaded pieces of chicken as she could hold at one time into her mouth. This proved to be less efficient than she’d expected. With her mouth full to the brim, chewing was excessively more difficult than before when she’d only taken a single nugget. Slowly, Akane chewed. Spitting food out wasn’t a concept she’d grasped as a fox and wasn’t something she would do as a human either, though that stance might change with time and as she would become introduced to other types of food… A quick attempt to chew saw nearly similar results to the drink, forcing Akane to pause. She’d nearly choked on solid food this time… Her heart skipped a beat and she proceeded with more caution, finding that her tongue had a larger range of motion than before. She could use it to more easily manipulate the food inside her mouth. Akane used this fact to her advantage and soon recovered. Making a mental note to keep her mouth at least partially clear for efficient eating, she pushed a couple more nuggets into her mouth.
Gently blowing on her ramen to cool it, Shiro listened to Mitsuoki’s explanation on what this Kikanshinki device of his was all about. ”So it’s not really memory wiping then but more of a memory alteration or override? That sounds kind of like hypnosis… Like a suggestion to replace something seen and thought to be unbelievable with an idea the person can find a bit more believable? That seems pretty nifty but… also kind of iffy. What happens if the person you try to use it on has a strong belief that what they originally saw was the real thing?”
Akane stared in sadness at her plate. Little more than crumbs littered its surface now. Had she eaten them too quickly? They didn’t appear to be coming back and there didn’t seem to be any more than the ones she’d started out with. But then where had they come from? Taking to her drink, Akane looked over to Shiro. Akane noticed that the food Shiro and Mitsuoki ordered was distinctly different than her own. While she’d love to try some of theirs too, they seemed distracted with their own verbal communication. It didn’t bother her but what exactly was it with humans and talking so much? Did they really understand every word the other one spoke?
Whether because of her familiarity with the food she’d just eaten, or perhaps due to some residual foxy notion hidden within her being, Akane noticed the smell of more nuggets and quickly went about looking to identify the source. Her eyes fell on a boy about her size, pouring his plate of nuggets into a container of some sort. Such a waste… why would he do that instead of eating them? The boy got down from his chair and two older looking humans guided the boy to the door Shiro, Mitsuoki, and she herself had previously entered from. Glancing back to Shiro and Mitsuoki to see if they’d noticed the boy’s actions, Akane deemed it up to her to retrieve the nuggets before they were lost to the void of becoming un-eaten.
In much the same manner as before, Akane subtly slid down underneath the table from the chair she was in. Careful to avoid Shiro and Mitsuoki’s legs, she dipped out from under the table crawling in awkward human fashion until she got to the table beyond. Her ears and tail popped out again as she scanned the area to orient herself to the target, eyes catching the boy and his parents just as they disappeared out the door. Good they were still within sight. This door pushed just like normal. It seemed this place liked one-way doors but thankfully she’d just seen which door to properly use so opening it was no trouble at all. Dang they moved fast. The group dipped around another corner, just out of visual sight. Akane pursued, turning the corner in time to notice the two humans and the boy entering one of the strange metal boxes on wheels. Nonono! This was bad! Akane had seen how fast those boxes could move! If she didn’t get to them before it started to leave then keeping up with it long enough to retrieve the nuggets was sure to be a failure. The box roared to life and smoke blew out from its hard cylindrical tail, Akane panicked. It was about to take off and there wouldn’t be anything she could do about it if it did. There was a word… one she’d heard many times in Soul Society. It seemed to be one that was commonly associated with running away or escaping. ‘Stop.’ For various reasons she knew this word. It seemed whenever someone was in a place they shouldn’t be they would use the word. Alternatively whenever Akane had been in the mood to play keep away as a fox with Mitsuoki or the other Shinigami people around him they would direct this word at her.
Akane tried. Though the word was far from the result of her efforts when pursuing this vehicle… shutting her eyes upon the third attempt to shout the word stop, Akane heard the screeching of tires. She’d done it? They’d listened to her and actually stopped? Daring to open her eyes and see the results of her progress, Akane’s face fell. Yes the mechanical box on wheels had stopped but… The front of the thing appeared to be engulfed in flames as the couple and their child quickly vacated the vehicle and ran to safety. She watched as they ran, curious about why the box was now on fire… She didn’t want to get close to it but the boy hadn’t left with the nuggets so they still had to be inside. Cautiously, Akane stepped towards the vehicle silently willing the flames to go away. Surprisingly the unintelligible flames seemed to be listening to her as they slowly faded and disappeared, leaving nothing behind. Not even any damage to the vehicle itself... Strange.
The doors were left open and upon approaching them, Akane quickly spotted the container with the nuggets inside. With no sign of the original owner in sight she picked up the container and smiled. More nuggets for her. Today was a good day!
She’d become lost in contemplation over Mitsuoki’s strange memory altering device when sudden realization came to her. Akane wasn’t an average human. She was a fox and with that fact she would also hold onto a curious mentality. Aside from her childlike human appearance Akane was by all accounts, just a child. Pausing in her meal, Shiro was going to note how this device of Mitsuoki’s didn’t seem to be very practical when her peripherals noticed something missing. Looking to more precisely gauge the discrepancy, Shiro let out a squeak. Akane was gone! Again…!
Name: Foxfire Class: Human Powers Tier: II Type: Illusion/Binding Range: 25 Meters Description: Spreading her Reiatsu around herself or an opponent, Akane forms a wall of imaginary flames. While the flames are illusions and do not cause any real harm, the imaginary heat the flames produce can feel real enough to opponents that they may stay their distance.
Shiro had commented that the device was a memory alteration or replacement item, which is exactly what Mitsuoki had said. He wasn't going to point that out in a condescending fashion, of course. He opted to say "Precisely." in a calm and agreeable tone. Shiro had also mentioned that the item sounded like it was hypnosis, as well as somewhat sketchy. A hypothetical question was asked about if the person was convinced that what they saw truly happened. Mitsuoki had said "There has not been an instance where the memory wasn't replaced that I am aware of; so, I'll assume that even if someone believes what they saw, the device would replace the memory. I am not particularly concerned if it were to fail." If Shiro had asked why he wasn't concerned, and only if she asked, Mitsuoki would say that he has other ways of replacing memories.
Regardless of if Shiro had asked or not, an individual wearing the same robes as him would walk up to the two of them saying "Kumagai-san?" while staring at Mitsuoki. A light glare would be shot in his direction before he said "Just Mitsuoki, please. Are you from squad ten?"
Shinigami: "S-sorry, and yes. I've been looking for you." Mitsuoki: "I suppose that means that my mission is concluded?" Shinigami: "Yes. Squad ten thanks you for your help. I'll be taking over from here." Mitsuoki: "Very well, then."
It was at this point that Mitsuoki had heard the screeching of tires and the distinct jingling of the bells mounted at the top of the restaurant's door. He glanced to where Akane was sitting just as Shiro let out a squeal. Mitsuoki then stood up and walked outside to where Akane was approaching the car. Just as she was about to put a chicken nugget in her mouth, she would realize that she was biting air. Mitsuoki had taken the nugget from her and put it back in its container, setting it down in the car. He would then flick her on the forehead again and say "Bad." in a cold tone. He'd then take her hand and begin pulling her from the vehicle, ensuring that the chicken nuggets were left behind for their rightful owner to find.
He would take him and Akane back inside the restaurant and say to Shiro "I must go, now. I have a report to write, as well as a very strange circumstance to appeal. It was good to see you again, Shiro." he also turned to the member of squad ten and say "Not a word of this to Toshiro, am I understood?" to which the member looked at Akane and said "I'll leave that to you." After which, Mitsuoki would say "Activate Gatestone, Squad Three." and vanish along with Akane. If Shiro had asked about the gatestone, the remaining shinigami would say that he didn't know anything about them, and that they were probably specific to Mitsuoki. After that, he would leave to resume his duties.
”Not concerned if it failed? Why not?” Shiro questioned. Why wouldn’t he be concerned? Wouldn’t it be bad if the person who’s memory was altered ended up remembering what had happened? But Mitsuoki’s words explained away the question quite solidly. ”I see… Well alright then.” Shiro commented. She didn’t really want to know what other methods Mitsuoki had for erasing memories.
Shiro kept quiet when the other robed Shinigami appeared. Obviously Mitsuoki had been here for a reason and whatever it was he’d been tasked with, apparently his part in it was concluded. She observed the two but mostly the newcomer, who didn’t seem to pay her any mind despite the obvious fact that she could see them both.
Delicious yummy nuggets! Akane was overjoyed to have a second helping of these delightful pieces of peculiar meat. She’d even gone so far as to try and pop an entire one into her mouth but came up with nothing. Confused, and a little concerned about what’d happened to her nugget, Akane opened her eyes to behold Mitsuoki standing before her. ”Owa…!” Akane cried out when she received the flick on her forehead. Tears welled at the side of her eyes, more for the fact that her second helping of nuggets had been confiscated and returned while she herself was pulled from the vehicle and escorted back into the restaurant than from the stinging feeling of the flick itself. Try as she might she couldn’t reach far or fast enough to grab the nuggets before Mitsuoki pulled her away from her prize. Sure she understood that she’d done wrong but she didn’t want to leave the nuggets just sitting there… Halfway back to the restaurant, Akane gave up and allowed Mitsuoki to walk her back.
”You found her!” Shiro observed once Mitsuoki returned. Given the presently pouting nature of the girl, something must have happened to warrant another flick punishment. ”And you as well. I’m glad we could meet each other again.” Shiro smiled. She didn’t know if Mitsuoki expected this to be the last time but Shiro would make certain, maybe in the near future, that it would not be their last meeting. Even if she had to break into the Seireitei itself to see him. Shiro paused her thoughts… Breaking in. That was quite a bold idea… Why had she even fancied such a thing? After all wasn’t the Seireitei supposed to be like a military function of the Soul Society? Shiro stuffed her curious thoughts into the back of her mind.
Akane looked back at Shiro. As with any other time she remembered from when she’d been alive, Shiro wasn’t going to come with them to Soul Society… It made Akane a little sad but even so… With her free arm Akane waved. It seemed to her to be a gesture that signified a leaving. She smiled, pouty tears still clouding her eyes as Shiro returned the wave with a gentle smile of her own.
