The last thing she could remember before everything went dark was the feeling of how her body felt unbearably cold. And weak. Even opening her mouth that one last time had made her feel sick. Her consciousness soon fell into darkness. An empty, blank, eternal darkness. After several weeks in Soul Society she'd finally succumbed to this inevitable death. It'd crept up on her slowly at first, but as the weeks passed the young fox cub could feel her energy slowly, gradually draining away. Her only regret? Having to leave Mitsuoki's side. To no longer be able to enjoy his company or the sweet delicious foods he offered her. Foods that she could never have tasted had she remained wild and lost within the city.
She lay in darkness, cold and shivering... Was she shivering? Sure she'd felt cold but it'd been like her body no longer existed. She was shivering? Her body felt cold? Wait... hadn't she left her body after saying goodbye to Mitsuoki and closed her eyes? No, she could feel her eyelids. They were closed? For a moment Akane pulled at the darkness until her eyes opened to the bright midday sun. It's warmth beat down upon her despite the unusual bite of cold upon the air. She felt cold but wasn't it a bit more than normal? Usually her fur would keep her warm. When her eyes adjusted she noticed she was looking up towards the sky. The sun, though it beat down on her and offered some warmth, was still mostly hidden behind the leaves of the forest canopy. She was on her back? Wasn't that bad? she was a fox after all. She tried to move but found herself flopped over halfway, a strange pinkish appendage landed just within her field of view. What was this? It looked similar to Mitsuoki's paws but it was obviously much smaller. The toes were proportionally long, unlike her own shorter and padded paws. She tried to swish her tail. Almost thought she could feel it there but... Nothing. Akane flew into a panic. She couldn't feel her tail...! Where was her tail? It was then she noticed the pinkish paw moving. The strangest part was it lay where her own paw should have been... What was going on here!? Akane moved to get up on all fours. The pink paw moved...! Stranger still she could feel her paw but... Why was this pink long toed paw sitting where her own paw should be? She'd then noticed her hind feet were not properly standing on the ground. She was standing on all four legs but it felt as if she were standing on her hind knees instead of her legs. Akane looked down. A pair of pink fingered paws lay beneath her... No way...!? What was going on here!? She quickly bent her neck and looked to her back legs. Pink legs equally without fur stared back at her. The worst part was the knees she felt... They were in fact touching the ground instead of her hind feet. Akane could feel her feet but only the toes were touching the ground. Even stranger was the limbs, which lacked any real kind of fur. Each one extended, seemingly from her own body and even that seemed to be rolled up inside a set of cloth that felt similar in texture to the cloths Mitsuoki often covered himself with.
Were her eyes deceiving her or something? Was she not a fox anymore? She didn't seem to have a tail anymore... Trying to move those muscles didn't appear to be working... Maybe she'd lost it somewhere? Still, she couldn't shake the foreboding feeling of dread washing over her. She needed to know what was going on but one thing was certain. Walking on all fours felt... strangely unnatural to her now... She couldn't run like this. Even after testing out her muscles, figuring out what worked with what limb the motor function associated with. Even walking was a challenge when her hind legs were seemingly twice as long as her forelegs... Slowly. Gradually, Akane crawled over to the nearby stream. It's flow was smooth and gentle. She felt thirsty. She'd felt thirsty before when she'd been in Mitsuoki's lap but hadn't been able to bring herself to consume even fluids at the time. The water was clear and cold and Akane drank. Though she struggled... Her tongue didn't work the way she wanted it to. Wouldn't fold the way it should have been able to... But eventually her thirst became quenched and she permitted the shallow stream to become cleared of the ripples she caused. Curiosity took over. Akane leaned over the water and stared down into it's depth, at the reflection that stared back at her.
Was this for real...!? What she saw reflected within the water wasn't her face but someone else's? It wasn't even a fox that looked back. No this was much more like Mitsuoki's face, kind of... All the humans seemed to have different features to their faces. The one that stared back at her from the stream had light golden brown hair that dropped as far as the shoulders in some places. The eyes were a sky blue in color. Based on the features she saw, Akane concluded that the face belonged to a human Child. How old were human children? Akane couldn't be sure. In all the time she'd spent with Mitsuoki, he hadn't seemed to age even a little. Were human lives longer than fox's? She couldn't tell... not when she'd only lived about a month herself. Akane decided to experiment. She lifted her left paw... The reflection moved it's left paw. Her eyes widened in surprise, as did the reflection's. Backing away from the stream as quickly as she could, Akane found herself coming to sit upon her rear in the grass. This... what was going on here? Was she really a Human now? But how was that possible? When she'd gone to sleep with Mitsuoki she was absolutely certain she'd been a full fledged fox...! What was happening here? This made no sense at all... Akane lifted her front paws in front of her eyes. Wiggled her toes, the fingers on the pink paws moved. No matter how much she wanted to deny it... She couldn't mistake the realization that the human child she saw reflected was in fact her.
But if that were the case then what happened to her original body? Looking around didn't turn up any fox bodies in the area. Taking a closer look at her surroundings, Akane noticed its familiarity. This was the same forest she'd been born into. Then that meant her family's burrow was around here as well! No. They wouldn't want to see her. She'd already been rejected before, she could only guess at what they would think of her if she showed up again looking like a human... Akane sighed. Her eyes popped open again in surprise. A voice! Was it hers? She tried sighing again. Yes! It was her voice. It was different than the one she remembered but it seemed to be hers as every time she sighed the noise her voice would make came out. She played with it for a while. Found out that by focusing on the muscles in her throat she could even change the pitch and volume of her voice. It was high. Very high actually. Thinking about the humans Mitsuoki knew, it made sense. Some seemed to have higher pitched voices than others. Especially the ones with the large hills located below their necks... Akane cringed. Those insolent high pitched moundy humans. Trying to steal her Mitsuoki away from her with their squeaky voices...!
That's right! Mitsuoki! She had to find Mitsuoki! But... Ever since he'd taken her away from the stone houses and brought her to the place with his own stone houses, she hadn't seen him come to this forest... That was it then, she needed to find the stone houses again. Then maybe she could find out where Mitsuoki had gone. She'd have to give him a good scolding for leaving her in this forest again after taking her in, giving her comfort, warmth, and food. Even a stone house of her own to sleep in. One thing was certain though, her senses were... unusually dull in this new human body of hers. Unlike when she was a fox, the smells of the forest didn't seem nearly as overwhelming as before. No matter. She wasn't going to stay here long anyway. She would leave, just as soon as she figured out how to stand up and walk the way the humans did...
She'd probably spent the better part of two hours trying to keep herself upright. How did Mitsuoki even manage this? Standing on two legs, and without even a tail to help with balance? Akane pushed herself up with her arms. Onto two feet again. She was determined to keep her balance this time. Whatever trick these humans had for remaining upright, she would need to figure it out if she planned to get anywhere fast. One discovery had crossed her. She could use her arms, outstretching them and using them as balances to help stabilize her position. This served just fine until she actually tried to move... The end result sent her falling back onto her rear, which was beginning to become quite sore from all the falling. But this could work. There had to be some trick, something she could do to keep her balance. Akane thought back and realization struck her. Pushing back up and onto two feet, Akane slowly lowered her outstretched arms to her sides. The humans would always wave their arms back and forth when they walked. Maybe that was the key to keeping themselves from falling...! She tried it. Her left arm would go forward, right arm backward. As for her feet, they would move opposite her arms. Yes! This worked! This was how humans did it! It made so much more sense now! Akane had always thought it odd for the humans to do the weird motion with their arms but it had all been for keeping themselves balanced! She inwardly enjoyed this moment. She could now get somewhere and it was a lot faster than trying to crawl on all fours like a clumsy human.
She walked, stumbled, even fell a couple of times on her way towards the first solid path she remembered when heading towards the human populated areas. One fall had even resulted in a scarring of her right knee. It stung and strange watery substances leaked from her eyes, but Akane pushed on. She wouldn't be deterred from her goal now that she'd managed to make it this far. The first house passed. Another one. One she'd skipped through the day she'd shown Mitsuoki and Shiro the way to her family's burrow. Ex family... She still felt sour about it. Kicking her out just because she'd been a little smaller than the rest of her siblings. It was too unfair. Akane pouted, or rather she felt her human muscles twitch and move almost involuntarily in response to her emotional flareup. Whatever, it didn't matter much to her right now. The main goal was to get back to that one stone house. The one where lots of people visited. It was the place she'd first met Mitsuoki. Maybe if she headed there and waited long enough she'd be able to find Mitsuoki.
Tired... That was the only thing she could think of when she finally made it to the stone house. Looking at it, it appeared they had started leaving the door open again. They'd been so mean, closing it on her and forcing her to wait for other humans to open it for her. This was almost like a second home to Akane. No matter what the people here couldn't just keep her out. She stood by the door. And waited. Looking around, she noticed some of the humans that entered were looking at her. One even pointed and then used its mouth to speak to another nearby human. It was enough though. Once Akane confirmed that no one was going to come and shoo her away, she walked inside.
The place was very similar to what she'd seen on her last visit here. Some of the shelves now held different things, and others appeared to have been rotated to other shelves. One thing was certain. This place had to be the birthplace of the cloth phenomenon! Humans came in. Then they would look around for a while and pick different cloths off the shelves. After that they would talk to the person behind the counter who would show them to another door inside the house that they would disappear into. Like magic the humans would come back out with different cloth on them than what they went in with and the cloth they carried would mysteriously change as well. Regardless, it didn't seem like Mitsuoki was here... Akane sighed. After all that hard work she put in to getting here, he wasn't around...
"Are you lost?" Akane started, falling onto her rear end for what was likely the hundredth time today. "Sorry! Did I scare you?" Akane looked up to the human who's voice seemed to be directed at her. It was that person... Of course it was. He looked at her with different eyes this time around but every time she'd been here before he was always the one to shoo her away, relocating her to a different place within the city whenever he caught her. Akane snuffed her nose up at him and looked away as she got up. "Where are your parents little girl...?" He was still speaking. What did he want anyway? Akane chose to ignore him since he wasn't immediately picking her up and throwing her out the door. Which was where she headed anyway... Mitsuoki wasn't here. She'd have to look elsewhere. Maybe he was in one of the neighboring stone houses.
After exiting, Akane noticed just how much brighter the sun was than the store. Shielding her eyes from the glare was something she'd come to find she could actually do now that she had human arms and hands. It was then she noticed the distinctive black. The tall dressed form she'd grown very familiar with over the past month. Her eyes quickly ascended to the face. Confirmed! It was Mitsuoki! She'd found him! She nearly leapt towards him. And fell. Right on her face, her chin smacked the paved sidewalk. Something that would likely leave a noticeable mark until it healed. Akane gritted through the pain. It was nothing compared to what she'd suffered. She could bear with this much. For now what she needed to do was catch Mitsuoki, get him to notice her before he disappeared again. To take her back home with him. To the comfort she'd grown to know and cherish.
Before she realized it, Akane had caught up with the casually strolling Shinigami, grabbing onto the hem of his garb and looked up to him. She knew his name. He was Mitsuoki. Countless people had spoken his name while she'd been around him. They were all human, much like she was now. If they could speak his name then perhaps maybe she could too. "Mm...!" Akane uttered. It was little more than a closed hum. The start of Mitsuoki's name, but only just the M. Learning to walk had taken roughly two and a half hours... But that was based on knowledge she already had. She'd never tried to speak like a human before...
It had been a week or so that Mitsuoki had been a member of the third squad, under the leadership of some guy named Kira. Mitsuoki had talked to the man a few times and he seemed to be slightly gloomy, while at the same time presenting himself as a decent enough person. His first week was just him getting used to the change of scenery and new faces. During that time, Mitsuoki had been forced to face down and enemy that he thought he had killed. This time, that enemy was allowed to live under the circumstance that he never once targeted Mitsuoki or those he was associated with.
Today, Mitsuoki would have to go to the world of the living to switch places with a member who had been there for a few days and had been wounded. The fact that, that person wasn't already back in the soul society or being treated on site had struck a chord with him, but Mitsuoki didn't comment on it. He accepted his first assignment with grace and returned to his room to grab his zanpakuto.
The day was slow. Not a single hollow had shown up, which was a very strange thing to report in this town. He had gotten tired of standing around and opted to start moving from area to area, looking for any hollow that may be able to hide its spiritual pressure. He had stopped in front of the same store that he went to, to get the sheets for his old roommates back in the kido corps. It was also the one where he had met Akane. A blonde haired child was seen inside, but he had paid her no attention. Mitsuoki turned to flash step away but quickly found that the child was grabbing his arm, saying... something that was incoherent. He looked at her with a cold, distant gaze and said "Go home, human." He then pulled his arm away and used a flash step to move further down the street.
He would pick Akane up in his arms and hold her against himself. She could cuddle with him once again. Be content and happy knowing he was still here for her. That had been the plan of course. To see Mitsuoki again, to go home with him. To not have to worry about fending for herself in this fox forsaken place known as Town. Reality was far more cruel however. Her feelings of happiness and elation became mixed with confusion and sadness when Mitsuoki gave her an icy cold stare and spoke words at her which felt distant and unwelcoming of her return. Akane fell on her rear once more as the Shinigami shook her off. His form disappeared, reappearing a small ways further down the sidewalk.
What was up with Mitsuoki's reaction? Why was he treating her this way? Akane stood up once more, her bare human feet planting themselves flat on the solid ground beneath her. Was it perhaps a game? Did he want her to chase him? If that was the case then she'd try her best even though she no longer had her fox body. She would try. Human limbs moved differently than what Akane was already used to. Walking was easy enough with practice but running as a human seemed to be a bit different. She opted to start with a faster walk instead when running seemed to just throw off balance.
He was still walking at a normal pace. A game of keep-away was it? Except Mitsuoki wasn't holding any food in front of her to get her to give chase like he usually did. No matter. She was a bit hungry after all her struggling but currently her motivations weren't for food right now anyway. The goal was to see Mitsuoki pick her up and give her the warm smile he always did whenever he came back from whatever it was he did during the day. Her hands outstretched, Akane tripped over her own feet and snagged onto Mitsuoki's robes. Had she been heavier than a six or eight year old child the action might have torn them... Akane wasn't concerned about damaging the black cloth that covered Mitsuoki though. All she wanted was for him to acknowledge her presence, to welcome her back in the same way she always did whenever he'd come back.
Akane looked up to meet Mitsuoki's eyes once more. Maybe if she could speak his name properly he'd be happy. She found the muscles that controlled her lips, her tongue. Humans seemed to use their tongue for a lot of the noises they made when communicating with each other... "Mm." She tried. Akane had the first part down but how was she supposed to make the other sounds included in Mitsuoki's name? "Mmmm..." She frowned. Was the M sound only because her lips were closed? What if she controlled the lips and pulled them apart after? Akane's grip on Mitsuoki's cloth tightened as she attempted another try. "Mmmiii" She did it! She'd managed to make a different sound with her mouth and it even sounded like the right sound too! So these muscles that controlled her lips were the key after all! Akane's sky-blue eyes became bright like stars as she looked up to the Shinigami, a simple happiness showing on her face. Her accomplishment was amazing! Maybe with this Mitsuoki would understand her!
The child was quick to catch up with Mitsuoki and had begun following him as he ignored her and proceeded to walk up the street. The first time he looked at her, she clearly didn't have a chain sticking out the front of her chest, so she was very much alive. If she was trying to find an adult to help he with something, there were dozens of other adults around she could turn to; but, for some reason, she insisted on getting Mitsuoki's attention. The girl had almost fell forward and Mitsuoki instinctively moved his hand towards her, but stopped part ways. She grabbed his robes to stop herself. His reason for not catching her was that, this was how he ended up getting involved with other humans, which he had no intentions of doing anymore.
She continued holding his robes even after stabilizing herself, giving more of the incoherent words that Mitsuoki didn't care much for. Mitsuoki grabbed the section of cloth and tugged it from the girl's hand and said "Go away, human. You have no business dealing with the damned." and vanished once more, much farther from where they were, but still at a range where Akane would feel his spiritual pressure. The place he had gone to was out front the restaurant where he and Shiro had visited on their second meeting. He was standing on top of a tall lamp post, looking over the surrounding area for anything that one might consider hollow-like.
Akane stamped her feet in frustration when Mitsuoki vanished again. This game was not fun anymore... Mitsuoki's tone of voice aimed at her wasn't like it normally was and she didn't like it. She couldn't understand what he was trying to tell her but from her own judgments in the tones, she could tell he was being mean to her for some reason. He'd vanished. Out of sight but not out of range. She could still feel his presence. It was something she could never forget after being with him through most of her life thus far. It was difficult to tell where exactly so Akane took a moment to focus on Mitsuoki's presence. She got a feel for his general direction and started heading towards where it felt strongest. She decided to try running. The general motions were similar to walking, it just required at a faster rate of coordination and adjustment to maintain her balance.
She recognized this place. She'd been here with Mitsuoki before. Granted she'd been asleep through most of her time inside but she definitely recognized the structure's exterior. Mitsuoki's presence was strongest here but where was he? Looking around didn't reveal anything except people passing by and the occasional metal box contraptions zooming back and forth. She rested on a lamppost nearby to the restaurant to catch her breath. Running as a human was tiring. Unlike her light and super agile fox frame, This body seemed to be weighed down by extra muscle and an uncanny inability to run without exerting extra strain in the form of swinging her arms back and forth just to maintain balance...
Mitsuoki's presence was super strong right here, which caused Akane to look up. Upon doing so she realized immediately why she hadn't seen the Shinigami right after reaching the area. He stood, way up on top of the lamppost. He seemed distracted, looking every which way as if he was searching for something. Akane Pouted. She couldn't climb up there even if she wanted to. Even in her fox body she wouldn't have been able to get up there on her own. Mitsuoki was amazing. She opted to do the only thing she knew she could do.
Reaching both hands up the pole as far as she could, even going as far as to stretch up on her tiptoes, Akane craned her neck back and looked up towards Mitsuoki. There was another syllable she still needed to at least resemble the name she'd grown to know. Tsu. How would she say that exactly? It seemed to have something to do with both the lips and the tongue. Experimenting with her tongue, though it didn't have the same kind of movement typical of her old one, the extra muscles did allow for an interestingly varied range of movement. "Miii" Akane started. Her lips curled in as she attempted to tsu. "Tuuu" Almost... Almost but not quite. The S sound hadn't come out even as her tongue clicked against her teeth to create the T sound. Maybe if she didn't pull it off as quickly? Akane tried again... "Miiitsuu" Yes! It worked! She could say Mitsuoki's name! Well, part of it. Later on Akane would find learning to speak the rest of Mitsuoki's name to be rather challenging. She'd assign Mitsu as his nickname until she could figure out the rest... "Miitsuu" Akane spoke again, this time projecting her voice up the pole loud enough for Mitsuoki to hear her. "Miitsuu...!" She spoke again, this time opening and closing the palms of her hands when Mitsuoki looked down and noticed her staring up at him. Little did Akane know that such an action was typical of Human children whenever they wanted to be picked up by a parent figure.
A nearby passerby watched the strange actions of Akane. He looked up the pole to see what it was the girl saw but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. As he was a single man, he opted to keep moving on his way. While he did want to assist the girl since she appeared to be alone and looking for something or someone, he also didn't want to be called out by others and end up causing a misunderstanding...
Nothing... not a single hollow in the area. Mitsuoki was about to move on when he heard that child's voice again, this time trying to say more things that Mitsuoki could only label as incoherent speech. Two...? What was Two? Two of what? Or was it Too? Not long after that, she had said 'Mitsu' which was one of the nicknames that Mitsuoki was called by those who forgot their place. There was no feigning ignorance when the child was able to address Mitsuoki by his name, even if it was the shorthand version of it. He frowned at her while also looking on the child with a cold, uncaring expression. She didn't look familiar in the slightest. He had never even seen her around the playgrounds in the area, never heard her voice. Mitsuoki didn't say anything this time, he just flash stepped away, stopping at the movie theatre that Shiro took him to the last time he was in the world of the living.
They were playing a series of movies, as they were the last time he was there, but not the same ones as last time. It would seem that they rotated the listings, which, Mitsuoki could see as being a reasonable choice. He would then turn to the street and begin looking around vigilantly for any signs of a hollow passing through. If the child showed up again, he would keep her at a distance while also asking "Why are you following me, human?"
There it was again...! That harsh way of looking at her! But before Akane could protest and speak his name again in the hopes he would respond, he vanished. For a moment she stared blankly up at the now empty lamppost. Why was he continuing to run away from her like this...? This had gone from being a game to just being saddening. All she wanted was for him to see her, hold her, and to recognize her. Oh... wait... Maybe that was the problem? Akane recalled the reflection she'd seen in the water back at the stream. It hadn't been the face she remembered seeing before. A young human appearance had replaced her old fox cub appearance... Maybe that was the problem then? Mitsuoki wasn't able to recognize her when she looked like a human. No matter. She would find him again and make him see that it was her for sure this time.
It was a little more difficult this time. Mitsuoki had moved some distance further than the last but after focusing for a bit more she felt his presence and immediately headed in the direction she'd sensed him in. The movie theater came into view, Akane spotted Mitsuoki with little difficulty as the streets around the cinema were relatively calm and void of other life at the moment. She rushed over to him calling his name but instead of allowing her to grab onto his cloth again Mitsuoki jumped around, keeping her at a distance while voicing words at her. Judging by the tones was it a question? Even if it was she didn't really know how she should respond. She couldn't understand so instead she answered by stamping her feet and pouting at Mitsuoki. It was at this point that something peculiar happened. Akane found her hearing to have become slightly better, and her balance came back, more so than it already was. Visually Akane's ears had extended up to the top of her head, forming two large foxlike ears instead of her regular human ones. From her back sprouted a large bushy fox tail. Though she noticed the differences, Akane hadn't yet picked up on the changes in her physical appearance.
With a bold leap of anger and frustration mixed with sadness and happiness, Akane launched herself at a greater speed with arms outstretched, reaching for Mitsuoki. "Miiitsuuu!!!" Akane cried out. Unreleased tears welled up under her eyes as she hurtled into his cloth once again. This time she came at Mitsuoki's cloth with a death-grip. Or as much of one as she could manage with her small human body. "Miitsuu..." Looking up at Mitsuoki, Akane's face took on an expression of sadness as she spoke his name again. He'd never tossed her away like this before so why was he doing so now? She repeated his name again, shaking the cloth that covered his body. Though it was barely visible, a chain around Akane's neck reflected in the midday sunlight for a single instant. Though it shone, the locket attached to the chain remained hidden underneath the girl's sweater.
He was given no reply, just the girl shouting his name over and over again. She was trying to grab at him repeatedly while doing so, constantly leaping to where he was standing. His reaction to this was always to flash step a few feet away, just out of her reach. Something had happened and the child had equipped a pair of fox like ears and a tail. Mitsuoki had examined the humans while he was on his past ventures. The humans had an obsession with animal-human hybrids, even make belief animals that had psychic powers that closely resembled humans. After finding images of that last one, Mitsuoki had decided that he had, had enough research data for one day and quit reading into the matter.
The fact that there was a child who could become an anthromorph didn't surprise him. It could have been something that was caused from the child's obsession with foxes. Or, the child could have been the offspring of one of those weird humans that sexually identified as things that were out of their actual species... one such example were the freaks who identified sexually as a government vertical takeoff, rotary engine powered, assault aircraft (Attack Helicopter). She had begun the motions to jolt forward, and, while she expected to grab onto him, Mitsuoki had said "Kyomon" and created a wall between them that she would smack right into instead. Afterwards, Mitsuoki would use kido to create a barrier around her before flash stepping so far away that she couldn't sense him at all. Once he was out of her range, the barrier would fade, allowing her the freedom to move around freely.
She'd expected to grab onto Mitsuoki's cloth, to latch on and not let go until he acknowledged her for who she was. That notion ended abruptly when the girl came face to face with an invisible wall. For the third time today, Akane felt pain. This however was a bit more jarring as her entire body collided with something invisible. She couldn't see it. She could still see Mitsuoki but now for some reason she couldn't get any closer. Her nose and face still stinging, from the shock of hitting an unknown wall, Akane made an attempt to move around the wall but with no success. She seemed to be completely surrounded by an invisible force. "Miitsuu...!" Akane cried, bashing the palms of her hands onto the invisible wall while simultaneously aiming a saddened expression in Mitsuoki's direction. "Miiitssuuu!!!" She cried when he vanished.
The child fell to her knees and started to sob. Why was Mitsuoki being so mean to her? Did he not want her anymore? Even if she wanted to go back to her home, her family didn't want her. They probably wouldn't want her to even be around at all now that she'd somehow gained human form. The barrier disappeared, Akane, who'd been leaning on the invisible wall, fell backwards and knocked her head on the ground. Again pain. Her arms reached up to where she'd just hit her head. It smarted, and felt like a small uneven bump was beginning to form.
Akane focused. And focused some more. She focused so much that the bump on the back of her head started to hurt again. Mitsuoki had gone far this time... Far enough or hidden enough to where her ability to sense him was not effective. In fact she couldn't feel his presence at all anymore. Akane was beginning to think that Mitsuoki really wasn't playing a game with her. If he was he wouldn't have let it go on this long, allowed her to hurt herself in her pursuit of his embrace. It was after she entered a slightly more populated area where Akane bumped into someone. Or they bumped into her. She couldn't be certain which it was but she didn't really care at this point. What really mattered was finding Mitsuoki again. Upon bumping into another person, Akane noticed the chain around her neck. Had it always been there? Either way it was rubbing against her neck and she didn't like the feeling. Pulling on the chain, Akane got it up and over her head before looking at it to see what it was. It didn't look like anything she recognized... She would be rid of it. She'd seen humans throw things and decided to try it out for herself. Pulling the locket back over her head in her right hand, Akane made to throw but stopped when she heard a noise. The locket clicked and opened up. With Curiosity taking over, Akane brought the locket back down to look at the locket. In her palm sat the locket, but unlike before it was now opened and she could see a picture inside of it. "Miitsuu..." Inside the locket was a picture of Mitsuoki and some girl she didn't recognize. She couldn't throw this away now... No. It had a picture of Mitsuoki inside it...
"Hello there, what are you doing here all alone for?" Shiro had approached and knelt before the little girl. Partly out of concern for the child's safety as she appeared to be injured. Secondly because she didn't know many humans who happened to have animal ears and a tail growing out of their body. At first she'd thought they were just ornaments, but upon approaching the girl, and placing a hand on her head, Shiro quickly realized how wrong this assumption was. The ears weren't attached to any kind of headband and both the ears and the child's tail seemed to be moving around almost as if they were natural. Akane turned to look up at the person who approached. Recognition struck as she realized it was Shiro who'd addressed her. Though she didn't understand, if it was Shiro then surely she could help her find Mitsuoki. Wasting no efforts, Akane lifted the freshly opened locket in her hand for Shiro to see. "Miitsuu..." she cried, a lonely and worried expression playing across Akane's features. "Hm... What's this?" Shiro took up the locket and looked at it for a moment. It didn't take more than a second for her to realize who was in the picture. Mitsuoki and his... former lover? They were both depicted inside the opened locket that the child held up to Shiro. "This looks like it belongs to Mitsuoki... Why do you have it?" Shiro questioned, giving Akane a sideways glance and lifting the locket from the child's hands since she'd offered it. "Miitsuu...!" Akane repeated with increasing intensity in her eagerness to have Shiro find him for her. "I... He is around... I can feel his presence." Shiro commented, though it didn't seem like the child could understand her words. Strange since she did at least look to be of an age where language shouldn't be a problem...
Shiro stood up, closing the locket. Akane responded by motioning with her hands, in similar fashion to the way she'd done for Mitsuoki. He'd utterly ignored the gesture to pick her up but Shiro seemed to get the intent as she accepted and hoisted the small girl up. "I don't really get what's going on but maybe we can get some answers if we find Mitsuoki huh?" Shiro noted. Akane's response was to repeat the only word she was currently capable of speaking, throwing in an increased enthusiasm now that someone familiar was actually showing her some attention.
"Hey. Mitsuoki." Shiro announced herself upon locating Mitsuoki. Mitsuoki hadn't really been Shiro's intent today in the human world but she couldn't just ignore someone who obviously seemed to have a reason for locating him. Though Akane's animal features had disappeared shortly after Shiro's search for Mitsuoki began, they quickly reappeared when Shiro set the child down. "Miitsuu...!" Akane whined, moving towards Mitsuoki as fast as she dared. Her outstretched arms carefully monitoring the space ahead of herself for anymore of the invisible walls that might pop up.
"Mind explaining to me why you've got a little girl following you around? And why she's carrying this thing around with her?" Shiro shot the questions at Mitsuoki before he could respond to Akane's approach, tossing the locket to Mitsuoki. Shiro had her suspicions, which she really hated to admit to. But if this girl was the result of something that'd happened between Mitsuoki and his former girlfriend then she really would appreciate an answer as to why the child had been left to wander around the city by herself.
Standing at a playground, quite some distance away, Mitsuoki felt a very familiar presence coming behind him... two of them, one of which, he was not prepared to face at the moment. Shiro's first words were 'Hey, Mitsuoki' which were met with a very cold stare from the soul reaper. It was almost as though he had forgotten the last few interactions, the fact that the two of them were more than acquaintences, in fact, they could technically be called friends. While Shiro had asked why the child was following him, Akane had shouted Mitsuoki's name while trying to run at him. Mitsuoki's response was by putting her back in the invisible box, which she had done well to not smack face first into, this time. Shiro had held up a locket that Mitsuoki recognized instantly while asking about it. He had no clue that it indicated that he had possibly left a lady with his child to raise while he was running around, playing soul reaper. He didn't care. His expression turned from cold to extremely unamused.
Mitsuoki walked over to Shiro and snatched the locket from her, saying "I do not know this child, and this..." he held up the locket "... is stolen property. Now if you would excuse me, I must return it to its rightful owner." he then turned on his heel and vanished, using flash step to go to the absolute edge of the town. If Shiro had followed him, when she stopped, she would notice that she was standing in the middle of a massive crater. Most of the bottom of it was still dirt and spiritualized glass from where Mitsuoki had formed it, and at the top, grass was beginning to take over it once more.
Mitsuoki had immediately moved to the middle of the crater and kneeled down, digging his hand into the dirt and moving it aside until there was a good foot of dirty removed. He paused and looked down with a panicked expression, his eyes narrow and shaking with his mouth agape. Tears formed in his eyes and he took another scoop of dirt out, and then another. "No..." he said and began digging more. "No- no- no- NO!!" he worked his way to shouting. Clutching the locket in his hand, tears began dripping into the hole. He spoke, softly, weakly, in a voice that was consumed with the sadness that he was suppressing the entire time, saying just one thing... "Akane..." His spiritual pressure began manifesting itself, appearing as a silver aura around him that turned to steam as it rose into the air. Shiro would begin feeling a sense of extreme anger in the air as Mitsuoki began contemplating the possibility that the child had removed the fox's corpse and stolen the locket...
She'd learned from the last time to put forth her hands as she approached Mitsuoki this time. Akane quickly found it to have been the right call as her hands made contact with another invisible barrier. If her thought processes had been more reasonable she might have attempted to go around the barrier, though she would still find herself to be completely surrounded again In her emotionally exasperated state, checking to see if she was surrounded by Mitsuoki's kyomon eluded her and Akane simply started banging on the wall closest to him with the palms of her hands while continuing to utter Miitsuu! Miitsuu."
Shiro was about to protest at what she'd just seen Mitsuoki do to the child. Trapping her like that with his ability. Wasn't that a little too cold a thing to do? She stopped herself though when Mitsuoki coldly stated that the girl wasn't his, nor did he even know her to begin with. Which was very strange in Shiro's eyes. If he didn't know the child then why did she seem so familiar with him then? They literally lived in different worlds so if he was telling the truth then there was no way for this girl to even know him either... "Stolen property...? Return it to its rightful owner...? Shiro's curious gaze caught Mitsuoki's back as he vanished from sight. How could it belong to someone else when it had his picture inside of it? It was even a couple's picture inside which included the girl Mitsuoki didn't like talking about... "How exactly does that belong to someone else?" Shiro wondered out loud, trying to think. Had she missed something? Maybe it'd come from the grave he'd rested Haruka in? Yeah she remembered the name... Shiro couldn't get it out of her head lately... It plagued her and for some reason whenever she thought about Mitsuoki and this girl it made her chest feel tight... But still... If this girl had stolen it, the real question was how? Haruka's grave-site was in Soul Society and as far as she knew a human child had no actual way to get to Soul Society in the first place... It simply didn't add up. Mitsuoki's anger about the whole situation didn't make any sense...
Akane intensified her hits against the wall, trying to break free of the strange invisible cage surrounding her. She pouted and tears welled up again when Mitsuoki vanished yet another time, leaving her behind. She stopped banging, leaning on the wall since trying to get Mitsuoki's attention now was pointless as long as she couldn't chase after him. Her eyes widened when her hands suddenly pushed forward. The barrier had vanished...! Unfortunately Akane hadn't been prepared, most of her weight had been on her hands. The child fell forward and both hands struck and slide a little across the street paving, scraping away a thin layer of skin. It hurt. Akane cried. It wasn't something she used to do as a fox, and it felt strange. But for some reason her human body seemed to do it automatically. Miitsuu..." Akane uttered through her tears.
"Ah..! Are you alright!?" Shiro flustered, breaking her thought processes and turning her attention to the youn girl after seeing her fall and start crying. Rushing over Shiro knelt down, checking to see if the child was alright. It was then she noticed all the girl's bumps and scrapes. "Just what is Mitsuoki thinking... You can obviously see him so the least he could have done was figure out what was wrong... I swear he can be too cold sometimes..."
Akane looked up at Shiro's words. Understanding nothing but recognizing the concerned tone of the older girl's voice. "Mitsu..." Akane cried out, picking herself up off the ground and moving into Shiro's arms. If it hadn't been Shiro, Akane would have simply continued pouting on the ground and made an attempt to locate Mitsuoki again. But since it was Shiro, Akane was certain she could at least confide in her about the situation.
"Alright. Let's go find Mitsuoki and give him a piece of our minds." Picking up the little girl, Shiro stood back up. It took only a moment of concentration to locate Mitsuoki. He was doing a very poor job of hiding his presence right now for some reason. Instead of a faint signature, Shiro could feel a large emotion filled one... "Let's hurry then..." Shiro stated, more to herself than to the girl in her arms. Akane rested, keeping quiet. Shiro had mentioned Mitsuoki's name so she judged that they were going to go find him. Which she was fine with since she couldn't tell where Mitsuoki had gone to...
"W-what is this...? Shiro halted at the middle of an unusually large crater at the edge of town. Caution tape had been spanned across it's perimeter to keep people from falling in. "Why... is there a crater here?" It didn't immediately click with Shiro that Mitsuoki had been the cause for this strange phenomena she stood within. "H-hey!" Shiro started in surprise, accidentally dropping Akane. The young girl had started to struggle with all her strength when she noticed Mitsuoki kneeling in the middle of the crater, mere feet from where Shiro had stopped her spark stepping. Though she fell from Shiro's arms, Akane landed gracefully on her feet before rushing over to Mitsuoki's side. He was down now. Maybe she could actually approach him. His emotions tore at her and made her feel saddened as well. This crater made no sense to her right now but she couldn't bear to keep feeling these emotions leaking out of Mitsuoki's aura.
Whether or not Mitsuoki noticed Akane's approach Akane couldn't tell. What she was sure of however was the fact she'd managed to grab onto him once more. Her fox ears perked up at the sound of her name. Why was he sad and angry about her? She was right here next to him... Rather than trying to speak his name again, Akane did the only thing she really knew how to do in this situation. Leaning into the Shinigami's kneeling form, Akane's face came close to his and she licked Mitsuoki on his cheek. A greeting from her to him. 'I'm back. Sorry for leaving you.' Was all that she meant to say. She couldn't speak these words yet, but her facial features would tell Mitsuoki all he needed to know if only he looked at her.
Mitsuoki was blind to the outside world as rage, hatred, and disgust filled his heart and mixed with the loneliness and despair he already felt within. He had only noticed Akane when she had ran up to him and licked his cheek, likely not knowing that she was now the focal point of his negative emotions. When this happened, the warm reaction that Akane likely had been expecting was not the result. Mitsuoki's hand would reach out, forced her to the ground as his face filled to express the emotions seething through his spiritual pressure. His other hand reeled back, forming sparks of silver energy with a ball at his fist that was actually much larger than it normally would have been; so much so, that the orb had consumed Mitsuoki's wrist and half of his arm. Of course, Shiro would easily be able to see that this attack was a Bala, or at least, a soul reaper's equivalent of it. This was it, how it would end for Akane, since a bala was much too fast for anyone to stop, and carried more than enough power to tear a human child's body to ribbons.
Just as Mitsuoki was about to drive his fist down on Akane, the gem on his locket had shone and a sphere of energy engulfed the surrounding area. The world changed to show an area that wasn't too terribly far away, with Mitsuoki holding the corpse of his pet fox, screaming a horrible cry of pain and despair while rocking back and forth. The pendant didn't show how long he was like that, only enough for Shiro to see what happens when Mitsuoki loses control... which would happen just as a hollow appeared near him. As the hollow moved in, Mitsuoki let out a battle cry that was filled with just as much pain as his previous grieving screams. He was still holding the fox and wielded his zanpakuto in his free hand, releasing a blast of energy as soon as he swung it that sent the hollow soaring back. The trees that had been caught in his attack were completely incinerated, even the ashes had become steam in the wake of his wrath. His eyes had lost the usual frostbitten gaze and gentle nature they normally had, and had now been completely consumed by the most intense hatred that even a hollow couldn't imagine. After the hollow was sent flying, Mitsuoki stood there for a few seconds, with blood dripping from his fingers from how tightly he gripped his sword... and then he flash stepped.
Mitsuoki had landed on top the hollow and where he would normally kill it quickly, this version of him had stabbed the hollow through the stomach to pin it in place. Mitsuoki had kneeled down on the hollow, still holding Akane in one of his arms, and began punching the hollow above the hole in its chest. Each punch was accompanied by a scream that was filled to the brim with pain. His eyes glowed silver with hatred and rained tears on the creature's body. The hollow had been screaming for help, for mercy, repeatedly telling Mitsuoki to just kill him; but, Mitsuoki wasn't in a merciful mood. He punched, and punched, and punched, and punched more. He punched until his hand was bleeding, and then he punched more. Finally, the hollow had died, but Mitsuoki was still punching and screaming. The body jerked with every hit and a very small crater was forming below it from the now increasing force that continued damaging Mitsuoki's hand. The last punch was coming and Mitsuoki had taken a deep breath, energy massing in his fist. As his broken and bloody fist slammed down on the hollow, a colossal explosion of energy had come out that consumed the three viewers. When the explosion was done, they would all see Mitsuoki crying in the middle of the same crater they were standing in, except this version had walls that were glowing red with steam coming out of them. The hollow? Completely evaporated. Time seemed to speed up now as it showed him crying for more than a full day, a full night, and even part of the next day. After that, he had set the fox aside and used his unbroken hand to dig a hole to bury her in. The vision's pendant was removed and placed inside with the fox before being covered in dirt.
Mitsuoki had been too distracted by the vision to finish Akane off, and his attack had faded away. Once that part of the vision had faded, he watched as the pendant had showed him the fox and the locket itself turning to dust and then reforming elsewhere, creating an entirely new entity. He watched the child fumbling around, trying to understand her situation. The vision faded and Mitsuoki's pin-grip on Akane slowly released itself. "A-Ak-a-ne...?" he asked with tears beginning to form in his eyes. His spiritual pressure had stopped escalating, but had changed to an emotion of disbelief, joy, fear, sadness, and shame. "Are you... Akane...?" he asked again. No matter what Akane's response would be, Mitsuoki would reach down to her and grab her, pulling her into his chest and hugging her tightly. He would cry while holding her, saying "I'm sorry, Akane! I didn't know..." and then softly alternating between the two statements. As for Shiro, she would see Mitsuoki in a state that was comparable to an insane hollow, and see the reason why Mitsuoki had thought that the child had stolen the pendant... the proper owner was the fox. If she had remembered his not, he did mention that Akane was dead.
Again Akane acted, expecting positive results. Again she'd been gravely mistaken in how the outcome would play out. Akane fell backward, falling right down onto her rear for what was beginning to become a lost count of times this day. Her eyes drew back to Mitsuoki in confusion. He was still acting so strangely, she just couldn't understand what was wrong with him. Even properly saying hello to him hadn't helped as he'd swiftly swept her aside and now stood over her. Akane's fox-ears sank in fear at the sight of Mitsoki's current image. "Miitsuu...?" Akane's voice trembled at the horrifying expression in the Shinigami's eyes, at the dangerously dense amount of energy he began gathering in his pulled back arm. This wasn't something to do to a friend, an ally. The energy she felt gathering was full of killing intent, yet fear gripped Akane too strongly to consider fleeing. Instead the girl curled up into a ball, trying to protect herself from what might come, but knowing full well she was likely going to die... again.
"Wait! Mitsoki don't!" Shiro shouted, instantly realizing the dangers of the situation at hand. She'd never seen Mitsuoki this mad before, never considered him to be one to bring harm down onto a human. This wasn't the Mitsuoki she knew and trusted. She'd never once considered that the Shinigami might intentionally try to kill a human, and an innocent one at that. She didn't have time to react as Mitsuoki began driving his fist towards the helpless child. Shiro released, she had to make it, to protect the child even if it meant going against Mitsuoki. Something was off, he seemed almost possessed. It was as if all reason had left him...
The light from the locket startled Shiro just as much as it had Mitsuoki, stopping her in her tracks. Akane, void of any reasonable emotion at this point save for the fear of imminent death, lost all control of her faculties as she unwillingly awaited her demise. "W-what is this?" Shiro watched the scene around her change into that of Mitsuoki's memory, or past, or whatever it was that could possibly be going on right now. Shiro didn't know, nor did she truly understand what was going on. She chose to sit tight and watch, Released, sword manifested and ready to defend Akane. Though she'd have been too late it seemed to help the child, Mitsuoki as well had halted his actions much to Shiro's relief.
One thing became certain to Shiro when the scene finished playing out before her. Sinking to her knees in disbelief, Shiro realized just how little she understood about Mitsuoki's emotions. The degree to which he'd lost control was... unimaginable. It went beyond the need for counseling and ascended into something which appeared to be on the level of divine wrath as Mitsuoki's emotions tore apart life and land alike. Even as the scene played through, Shiro couldn't help but feel sorry for the Hollow which had gotten itself caught up within the Shinigami's tantrum.
The burial. So this giant hole in the ground, this crater was Akane's burial site? It felt absurd to think about but if what she saw in the vision provided by the locket was true, then it explained Mitsuoki's current state of mind. Sort of...
When nothing came down to smite her, Akane cautiously dared to peek. Looking between her arms which covered her head to the best of her ability, Akane noticed something odd about the area around them. She slowly looked up, saw Mitsuoki. A twinge of residual fear shook her small body for a moment but Akane quickly noticed she was no longer Mitsuoki's focus. He watched a virtual scene, to which she only alighted to when it began showing her most recent activities. The energy he'd gathered to attack her with seemed to have been dissipated and no longer existed in the hand Mitsuoki held intent to use against her. Then it faded. Mitsuoki turned to her speaking her name. She understood it. He always spoke Akane before whenever he talked to her. Akane's features became slightly less frightened as the emotions in Mitsuoki's aura changed to encompass new emotions. Emotions she knew, emotions she liked and cared about. Mitsuoki was back and Akane was glad to have him back. Uncurling from her fetal position, Akane's arms went out towards Mitsuoki. A happiness returned to her features as tears flooded and blurred her vision. "Miitsuu...!" Akane cried, embracing the Shinigami as he scooped her up into a hug. Upon reaching Mitsuoki's chest in embrace, Akane's tears began flowing freely as she uttered his name again. Joy, sadness, and relief all mixed together in the girl's emotions as she held onto Mitsuoki in a mutual embrace for the first time since being reborn.
"W-wait... That's Akane...?" Shiro couldn't believe what she saw. In fact it all seemed far too unreal to be true. "Aren't... Aren't people and... other living things supposed to become spirits and go to Soul Society after they die?" This made no sense. Sure she was relieved that Mitsuoki hadn't gone on another destructive rampage like she'd seen in the Locket's replay but... Akane was a human now? But why? And why was she like... six or eight years old instead of being born as a baby? It hurt to think about. There were too many new things to learn and experience. If this was normal she'd accept it, but it didn't seem like being remade into a new person was a normal occurrence... Regardless Shiro was glad Mitsuoki hadn't gone crazy again. Surveying the area she determined that if it'd come to that she'd have to try and stop him. This level of destruction wasn't normal and having it so close to a populated area was not something she could overlook.
Pushing herself up to standing, Shiro approached the two at the center of the crater. Their joyous reunion aside, Shiro had a bone to pick with Mitsuoki now that she knew the reason behind this giant hole. "You... have no idea how much I want to punch you right now..." Shiro commented, standing over Mitsouki and what was apparently Akane. Words only. An expression more or less. Shiro would never hit someone intentionally unless it was during sparring or in a real fight where trading blows had become the only viable option. "So... this is Akane?" Shiro stared down at the girl Mitsuoki held in his arms. It felt so surreal. To think a transformation like this could even be possible. But if she really was Akane then her released appearance fit unusually perfectly. Upon noticing the state of the child, Shiro's complexion turned into a crimson blush. "W-what the hell are you doing to her!?" Shiro exclaimed, abruptly plucking Akane out from Mitsuoki's arms.
Akane's crying subsided. Content to be in Mitsuoki's arms she simply embraced him. That was until Shiro approached to address Mitsuoki. Akane looked up at Shiro with a curious glance. Her emotions were a bit muddled as well it seemed. It was fine though, She didn't appear to be interested in being physically aggressive like Mitsuoki had. Or so Akane had thought. In her moment of relaxation, Akane soon found herself scooped up into Shiro's arms instead. "Miitsuu!" She protested, struggling to reach for Mitsuoki again. Why was Shiro doing this now? After she'd finally been able to come to terms with Mitsuoki and be with him properly again...
"Didn't think you could be like this towards a girl... so inappropriate... Come on Akane, you need a bath. Cuddling with Mitsuoki can wait until after I've cleaned you up." Shiro frowned at Mitsuoki. Embracing a girl that'd soiled herself... Either Mitsuoki had been too blind to notice or simply hadn't cared after realizing Akane was right here in this girl instead of lying buried in a grave. With the palm of her hand held out opposite Mitsuoki, Shiro forced her energy into creating a gate for herself and Akane. She'd take the girl back to Las Noches and get her cleaned up there. Despite how desolate Hueco Mundo seemed, the fortress was surprisingly well equipped with living facilities.
Akane continued to protest even as Mitsuoki vanished from sight when the portal closed. This wasn't how she pictured her reunion... Embracing one minute, then separated again as Shiro seemed to have an agenda of her own involving Akane... "Miitsuu..." Akane cried softly to herself, giving up the struggle now that Mitsuoki appeared to be gone. Whatever Shiro planned to do with her, Akane couldn't tell. Though aside from a firm hold to prevent her escape, it didn't seem like Shiro's intentions were hostile...
Bringing Akane to the bathroom, she undressed the child and started running water for the bath. Akane stood confused. Though a lack of clothing wasn't something new to the girl, being a former fox and all... This room was very strange. She watched Shiro undress herself as well before proceeding to pick up an object attached to a hose. Turning it on Akane, the girl started and attempted to get away as hot water assaulted her bare flesh. Her escape was halted by Shiro's firm hold and the wash-down began...
"Stop... struggling...!" Shiro complained, grabbing at Akane's waist as the girl tried to escape. Akane's success was guaranteed when her lathered form slipped through the older girl's grasp. Akane spared no pause, instantly making a beeline for the door. This place was unfamiliar, strange, and ultimately didn't appear to be a place Mitsuoki had ever visited or cared enough to bring her to. She slid into the door full force, bracing herself with her arms to avoid a dangerous collision. Her fox ears shifted towards the door, seeking to hear. Miitsuu...!" She cried while listening to make sure that if any response were given, Akane would hear it. Nothing. It didn't seem like he was out there... The young girl's ears perked in reverse at the slapping of bare wet feet upon tiled floor. Akane shifted her eyes to see Shiro making an effort to recapture her. The girl's arms were outstretched and reaching for the fox-girl. Akane ducked down at the last second and dashed away skittering across the floor on all fours. Unprepared for the slickness of the floor itself, Shiro collided with the door rather than wrapping her hands around the small girl in a secure hold. She'd had little time to adjust herself, noticing the slipperiness of the floor a fraction of a second too late.
"Dammit..." Shiro fell to her rear on the ground in front of the bathroom door, now nursing a stinging nose and watching Akane as she zipped to a joining corner of the room before rebounding off the wall with her feet and propelled herself towards the opposite corner, furthest away from Shiro. Akane would make it out that door. She wasn't sure how since she didn't know exactly how doors worked but she would try her best. Akane braced on all fours, watching Shiro recover from her collision. The results were as expected. With as little experience as she had with walking and running on two legs, this floor was particularly dangerous for bipeds. Akane had quickly opted to resort to the more familiar four legged run. It was awkward to perform in her new human body but in the mad dash she'd just made, it'd proven very useful in sustaining her mobility on the otherwise very slick tiles of this room's flooring.
Shiro moved to regain distance on the evading girl, Akane waited just long enough for Shiro to get close before pushing off with her feet again. The girl careened under Shiro, passing between the girl's legs even as she made an attempt to grab at Akane again. Grasping but again slipping against Akane's soap lathered form. She made it to the door again and stood up. It had a handle... A round handle. She could reach it and she did. Akane knew from observations that to open a door she needed to use her hands to grip and turn the knob. Which she tried to do but the doorknob wouldn't budge. Rather her hands and fingers simply slid around on the glossy bulb, unable to turn it. She couldn't get out...! Hearing an exasperated cry of frustration, Akane shifted her attention to Shiro who was fast approaching again. It was like a game of cat and mouse. Maybe if Akane avoided long enough then Shiro might give in and open the door for her, let her find Mitsuoki again.
Akane dodged again, in the opposite direction. Unlike before however, Shiro hadn't collided with the door this time. "Enough! This isn't funny!" Shiro shouted, staring off after the purposefully elusive child. She was not interested in playing this game. Shiro hadn't even wanted to take a bath right now but Akane had needed it. She was glad she hadn't tried to give only Akane a bath though. This activity would have forced her to change clothes anyway. But she wasn't going to continue this annoying game of chase. With a burst of energy, Shiro's seemingly electric aura permeated the bathroom. "If you want to go back to Mitsuoki then you need to take a bath first!" Shiro reasoned, though Akane showed no signs of understanding anything other than the mention of Mitsuoki's name. He was so going to have his hands full with this kid if and when he was left alone with her...
Akane waited. Backed into the corner, ready to launch herself again should Shiro approach. She'd released and the room became thick with Shiro's aura. It wasn't unfriendly, nor did it feel like Shiro intended her any harm, but all the same it made Akane worry a little. Shiro approached. Slowly this time. She hadn't caught Akane while running at her so why was she walking towards her now? Akane waited until Shiro got close enough to justify taking up residence in one of the other corners of the room before making a break for it. "I don't think so!" Shiro shouted. Akane's focus was on getting to the next corner. Looking back wasn't an option, but had she done so she might have noticed the strange threads of electric whip-like energy shooting towards her, might have had a chance to avoid them.
"Stop struggling. We'll be done here soon enough if you just cooperate and then we can go find Mitsuoki again." Shiro informed Akane, though again the understanding seemed to be lost upon the girl. "Looks like Mitsuoki's gonna have a lot to teach you when he takes you back to Soul Society..." Shiro returned to a sitting position at the bath, a now bound Akane in tow as she continued the scrub-down.
"I brought her back. She's your charge now." After taking the time to bathe Akane, wash and dry her clothes, Chase her up and down Las Noches, and then taking time to locate Mitsuoki again... A good two hours had passed. "Miitsuu!!!" Akane shouted in excitement when she saw Mitsuoki again. Rather than let the girl struggle again, a seemingly exhausted Shiro let Akane down and the little fox-girl hurriedly ran over to Mitsuoki. If this was what taking care of a child was like... Shiro might have to question her own sanity if she ever decided to have kids of her own...
Shiro had gotten mad at Mitsuoki, stating that she wanted to punch him, but having no idea why, he looked at her with an innocent expression, with tears streaming down his cheeks. Then, she grabbed Shiro and took her away. He had assumed that she had a reason for taking her like that, but hadn't really guessed that she was going back to Las Noches. Shiro was a good natured human, so, he figured that she would come back with Akane at some point. He wasn't afraid of her harming Akane since Shiro was almost broken from accidentally hurting Mitsuoki back at training. A seat was taken at the nearest tree where he wrapped his arms around his knees and rested his chin on them, waiting from the human and the fox-girl to return.
When Shiro had returned, she said that Akane was his now, which was something that didn't really need to be said. Akane had been squirming in Shiro's arms until the human let her go and let her run to Mitsuoki. The soul reaper had accepted Akane and held her warmly. He straightened out his legs and guided Akane to sit on them, continuing to hold her some more. He looked at her bumps and scrapes, several of which were because of his actions and he knew it. "Hold still." he said and his hand took on a silver glow that, when pressed against Akane, began healing her wounds. He then looked up at Shiro and noticed a red spot on her forehead. "Shiro... What did you hit to cause that bruise on your forehead?" he asked while healing Akane.

Akane nearly lost her balance even as her small form was released and she dashed over to Mitsuoki's arms as fast as her current form permitted. Shiro had been surprisingly capable at keeping her from getting away after the bath... Mostly... Shiro had speed while Akane was able to maintain unpredictability. It'd kept her away from Shiro's hold quite effectively with all the different areas of Las Noches to explore. Wanting to hide and avoid capture, the young fox girl had even discovered a trick she could perform which aided greatly in avoiding the older girl's efforts to capture her... "Miitsuu!" Akane's voice rang with glee, seeing his open arms and willingness to accept her. She barreled into Mitsuoki's warm embrace and attempted one herself despite her significantly smaller stature.
Straightening his legs for her to sit upon, Akane gave a briefly confused expression. This position was definitely different now that she had human form... She opted to sit with her back to his front if Mitsuoki permitted her to do so. He said something and then made to move and touch her injuries... Akane flustered. Not all the injuries were that serious but they would still hurt to have them touched...! She struggled and squirmed a bit but Mitsuoki's hold held firm on her. She gave up the struggle when she realized he was actually helping her injuries to heal, opting to stare with unabated interest and curiosity as he worked.
"... I-it's nothing...! Don't worry about it..." Shiro's face turned red and her hands moved to cover her forehead. In her efforts to prepare and return with Akane, she hadn't taken the time to look in a mirror. The fact there was a bruise at all wasn't something she'd expected to get even if she had been careless. Mitsuoki pointing it out only made things worse in more ways than one... Why had he said that in the letter...? And if he meant what he said then why was he showing concern for her right now? It didn't make any sense... Thinking about it even made Shiro's heart flutter a bit. Dammit her emotions made no sense right now... Why did she feel this way about Mitsuoki...? "I can't accept this..." Shiro stated after catching her breath, returning her hands to a normal state while her right hand pulled out a folded paper from a hidden pocket. "The last sentence is incredibly unreasonable... I won't be able to do that..." she stated, handing it back to Mitsuoki while simultaneously averting her eyes. It was the note he'd written and left her with on the day she got attacked in Soul Society. "Don't leave me out of it... If it's something... I can help with, then please... let me help, as a friend okay?"
