NEVER GIVE UP
⚔
"Dammit!" Sam cursed as she ran. Her attempt to stay in the human world long enough to heal up even just a little bit before having to return and report her findings was quickly becoming a hassle. On her tail and keeping chase at not more than several meters behind, several hollow had gathered. With no Kido and no Zanpakuto to fight with, the only thing the Shinigami could realistically do in this situation was run and hope that they would eventually give up the chase. It was an act she had no choice but to perform and truly hoped her squad mates would never catch wind of... ever. Retreating from an enemy even though she realistically had no means of fighting against said enemy, was still something frowned upon. Hell even some of the other 11th squad members had the capacity for hand to hand combat. She could handle it to some degree as well when it came to fighting without a weapon but with the injuries she'd previously sustained there was no way she could throw any kind of punch at these beasts right now without gravely harming her already injured predicament.
She could have used Shunpo, gotten away from these hollows and continued on her way. But being on patrol meant she had to protect the citizens of this town. If she escaped now and the hollows following lost track of her where would they go then. Obviously they would turn their attention to the unknowing humans within the area and that was something she needed to avoid at all costs. Her best bet would be to lead these monsters away from the city and hope she could drag them far enough that they wouldn't return to the city after she left them out in the middle of nowhere.
It was a shameful option given her position... But it was realistically the only option she had. As far as she knew there were no other Shinigami assigned to the immediate area, and calling in for backup when she should be able to easily handle these beasts would definitely get back to her squad. Her strength would be questioned, it would become known that she'd failed in a very simple task against hollows that should have been no contest for her whatsoever even if they had ganged up on her all at once.
She could feel the pain from her injuries beginning to increase and her pace was slowing. At this rate she might not make it to the edge of town before the Hollows caught up to her...
Mitsuoki had taken his day off to slip away from the soul society in search of some mushrooms that he could use in his cooking. He had a fair understanding of what the poisonous ones were and knew very well the already safe ones to consume, even knowing a couple of poisonous ones that he could use to teach his squad mates a lesson about stealing his hair ties. Nothing lethal, just a few hours of never being able to escape the toilet. This was interrupted when he heard an undeniable commotion and felt spiritual pressures rapidly approaching. He immediately began hiding his own spiritual signature. The pressures had gotten closer and Mitsuoki had immediately used kido to create a box around himself, completely masking is spiritual pressure, his scent, the very sight of him. He was undetectable by any means and he had taken to watching his surroundings for whatever he had felt approaching.
He waited, watching from the inside of his invisible box as a woman ran past him with a trio of hollows approaching. His eyes had narrowed on the girl's arm where a bandage was placed. She was clearly wounded, but she had another arm that she could've used her zanpakuto with. Her spiritual pressure wasn't particularly impressive, it felt like her personal spirit pressure had surpassed that of her own weapon. "Impossible..." he whispered from inside the barrier while he turned to see the hollows behind her, getting closer. "A weapon that is broken is useless, Mitsuoki." the voice of Tasogare echoed in his mind. "Let her die! She's too weak to handle some sissy hollows, she's undeserving of life!" Akatsuki shouted. "Save her and pledge your blade to her protection for life." Tasogare said. Mitsuoki had let out a sigh and simply said "No and No. Tasogare, what leads you to believe that blade was broken?" The spirit replied "A zanpakuto is part of the soul reaper's soul. We are a reflection of you. Our spiritual pressures are always of equal strength, if not barely distinguishable. There is a vast difference between those two."
Mitsuoki dismissed his Shallow Grave and used flash step to go past the hollows and stop a little bit behind Samantha. His spiritual pressure would reign over the entire area, submitting it to a strong sense of annoyance. The hollows continued getting closer and Mitsuoki had only stood in place, letting them begin closing the distance. He glanced behind him to Samantha and asked "Have we met?" The girl looked vaguely familiar, but he couldn't put his finger on it...

"What!" The sudden presence of another Shinigami surprised her. Sam had hardly expected any others to be within the immediate area, let alone one who would willingly come to her rescue... He stood between her and the pursuing Hollows, glancing back just long enough to ask whether they'd met before or not. "Huh? Have we met before?" Sam tried to think back on some of the people she'd knew. "Ah! I recognize you now! You're Kumagai, Mitsuoki aren't you!" That's it! How could she forget a face like his. It may have been some time now but she could still remember the face of the one Shinigami who always seemed to have had an interest in challenging Squad 11 Members to duels. What purpose it'd actually served him back then she didn't know or really understand but given that he stood here before her now at least eliminated the suspicion she had that he'd been killed in action. "I don't think I've seen you in like... five years now is it?" Yeah this was that Kido guy, she was sure of it now. She even remembered sparring with him on occasions when no one else would simply for the fact that they started to consider him annoying. In all honesty they'd just been irritated that Mitsuoki had started to best them in one on one duels. More importantly... why was he talking right now when there were issues to be dealt with? The three Hollows were closing in fast and it didn't look like they would wait for their introductions to be over. "We can talk later! Since you're here right now can you please do something about those!" Sam pointed with her good arm, past Mitsuoki towards the Hollows. One of them had gotten close enough now it'd already started to swing its claws, opting for Mitsuoki now that he was in the way and a much closer target than Sam.
The female seemed to know his name, but Mitsuoki still had no clear memory of her. She mentioned something about knowing him five years ago, but she was more concerned with the fact that there were three weak hollow getting closer. Mitsuoki held his hand to the hollows face and said "One moment, if you please." in a tone that implied he had not a single shred of fear. The hollow paused its movement, one of its eyes getting wider while it let out a "Hrmmm??" to further express its confusion. Mitsuoki turned his hand into two fingers that pointed directly at the middle of the hollow's mask. "Hadō twenty six, Hidenkō." he said and a blast of crimson lightning erupted from his fingers and shot straight through the hollow's face, turning it to black dust immediately.
The next hollow had been not far behind and tried striking through the black dust left behind by the first. "Kyōmōn." he said and the hollow impacted an invisible wall. The hollow appeared as a cartoon character with its face pressed against a window. "Badukō Sixty Two, Hadō Sixty Two, Hyapporankan..." Mitsuoki formed a metal rod in his hand that was glowing red hot. He threw it, shattering the kyōmōn and sending it straight through the first hollow. The rod broke into many more rods as it traveled towards the third and final hollow "... Bakuhatsu." he said and each rod exploded, finishing the last one.
Mitsuoki then turned around and said "You know my name, but I still cannot remember yours. You mentioned knowing me five years ago, that would be the Soul Reaper Academy."

"Oh right. Where are my manners." Sam was a bit jealous, this Shinigami single handedly taking care of three hollows with kido arts alone, not even drawing his Zanpakutou. If it weren't for the strange policies of 11th squad she probably would have picked up some kido herself by now. At least then with her broken arm and her broken Zanpakutou she wouldn't have had to run from such weak hollows like some idiot. "I am Kragner, Samantha, Unseated member of Squad 11." Sam introduced herself, or rather, reintroduced herself as the case in question would be. "I don't know if you remember me but I do remember you frequented our barracks several times during your enrollment in the academy in order to challenge our regular members to duels. Not sure if you recognize me from then but I was one of those members you sparred with." If he did remember then maybe he'd also remember that she'd been the one to best him each time he visited. Though his spiritual pressure felt stronger now than it had five years ago, possibly even more so than her own... Perhaps she'd become too lax in her training of late... She also wasn't unseated for any other fact than she hadn't felt the need nor the interest to bother aiming for a position. Unlike her fellow Squad mates, Sam preferred to engage in contests and challenges of her own volition. Being in a seated position with the 11th squad meant constantly defending oneself from being surpassed by the other squad mates. She would have found it too annoying to constantly be on the defensive and had chosen the easier position of no position at all. It meant generic tasks and even the occasional patrol like she'd been doing. Though her menial task of patrolling her assigned section had turned into a disaster after the Arrancar visited and attacked her... Sam shuddered to think what could have happened if the monster had chosen to finish her off instead of just beating her up and leaving her for dead.
He didn't remember her at all, but the fact that she remembered him meant that she must have actually been there. There would be no point in lying about that sort of thing, so she wasn't trying to earn points with him. Mitsuoki had looked at Samantha's bandaged arm and said "Squad eleven is full of battle happy morons who allegedly do not run from any enemy. It is quite obvious that you have sustained an injury. What happened to your arm, and why is it that you do not use your other hand to fight with?" his tone was blunt and the description of squad eleven was fairly accurate. At the same time, his zanpakuto had already told him the reason why she didn't bother trying to use her other hand to draw her blade and fight with. Mitsuoki just wanted to hear the reason from Samantha herself.
Mitsuoki wasn't particularly afraid of offending Samantha. From what he had seen of her squad, they would sling far worse insults at each other than having lesser intelligence and being all to quick to rush into a fight. Of course, there were also the occasional black sheep in every squad. Mitsuoki was a black sheep when compared to the rest of the entirety of the soul reaper organization. But most of them were pretty trigger happy.

"I suppose you're right. Squad 11 does tend to have a strict policy of facing any challenge that comes across our path and refusing to back down when faced with a fight even if it means risking ourselves to the possibility of death. Though I'd have been happy if this time it had been like any other..." Sam averted her eyes. There wouldn't be any point trying to deny the truth with Mitsuoki. Unlike the countless weak individuals who inhabited the ranks of the Gotei, there were ones such as Mitsuoki and herself who could stand out among the crowd if and when they wanted to. He'd likely already picked up on the state of her Zanpakutou anyway, so lying about it was clearly out of the question. "I met an individual, or rather that individual met me... She seemed to have something against Shinigami when I saw her and I haven't been able to sense her presence ever since the incident. I did what I could but ultimately in the end I wasn't even able to put a scratch on her. She left me with a broken arm and a shattered Zanpakutou..." Her abdominal injury had started feeling better so she opted to leave that one out of her explanation. "I stood my ground and fought and now here I am... To be honest I don't think I would have had a choice even if I had decided to run. There was no way I would have been able to get away from a monster like that..." Sam looked to Mitsuoki with a stern look. "I have been biding my time to allow my injuries time to heal, I don't need to hear any crap from my squad about this sort of thing. Besides, if I leave my post now there's no one to cover the position in my absence." Or so she said but there was little good she could do right now outside of playing cat and mouse with the Hollows that showed up. She could ask Mitsuoki to assist her until her designated time of recall but then her squad would want to know why she'd returned earlier than scheduled... Either way she was in a lose lose situation with no real way out. "And in case you're wondering, no I have not reported it yet. From what I have been able to tell the individual selectively chose me as her target and then went back to where she came from. I'll be filing a full report of the incident once I return, so you need not bother about it." Duty bound Shinigami were like that, After hearing of a problem they'd then ask if a report had been issued, and if it hadn't been reported they would demand that a report be issued right away or try to issue the report themselves to gain credit for it.
Mitsuoki had listened with interest as Samantha had explained what happened. She came here to assist with the hollow problems and someone else, someone stronger had confronted her. The battle resulted in a broken arm and zanpakuto, which would be the reason she didn't draw it. A zanpakuto with no spiritual pressure is just a normal katana, so it wouldn't even put a scratch on the weakest of hollows. At the same time, her injuries hadn't healed so fighting up close was a bad idea in general. "I see, so it would be problematic if your squad was informed that you were seen running from three exceptionally weak hollow and required the assistance of someone who uses kido." Mitsuoki said with his arms crossed over his chest. His tone was cold, but it didn't imply any malicious intent. "Likewise, I am not supposed to be in this world at all. It would be most problematic if the kidoshu found out that I was here without orders to be. Perhaps we may come to an accord? I shall say nothing to your squad and you shall leave me out of your report entirely."
Mitsuoki's gaze sharpened as he locked onto Samantha's eyes. "However, you are currently unable to fight properly. Sending another to take your place means that you would have to face your squad. Those wounds would take too much time to heal in this world. You assisted me in the academy, greatly. I wish to return this kindness... You must swear on your Saketsu and Hakusui that you will tell no one of this technique. In exchange, I will help you heal at a vastly increased rate. So fast that two weeks will elapse and you will have already returned to battle." Mitsuoki would be insistent that she sword on her Soul Chain and Soul Sleep that she wouldn't tell anyone, even making her say the full promise word for word if she hadn't already. In short, she was swearing that if she told someone, she would also cease being a soul reaper entirely. It was akin to a human swearing on their life. Of course, she could refuse it and take several months to let the bones mend themselves if she wanted.

"Yes, that's right." Sam watched Mitsuoki closely and would have crossed her arms over her chest if the act itself had been possible in that moment without incurring a complaint of excruciating pain from her injured arm. What she hadn't expected though was Mitsuoki admitting to being present in the living world without orders to be here. What was he thinking? Sam could feel the beginnings of a compromise being offered and listened intently to what Mitsuoki was saying.
What Mitsuoki offered sounded impossible. But he was serious, and by right of her own silence he demanded a promise. It would save her a world of trouble if she could get back without appearing to be severely injured. She had doubts about Mitsuoki's capacity as a healer considering he wasn't even a member of the Healing specialized 4th squad. But if he could help her in any way with the predicament she was in then why did she have any reason not to accept his terms?
A broad smile drew across Sam's face. Mitsuoki was intriguing and if he could hold to his words then she could give up on her pride as a member of squad 11 for this one instance. "Deal." Sam stated abruptly. I swear. By my Saketsu and my Hakusui that I, Kragner Samantha, unseated of Squad 11, will keep all that occurs here, confidential and off record. You have my word." It was mutually beneficial really. They'd both keep the other's actions and situation a secret. She had no reason to know why he was here without orders and she wouldn't ask. She'd keep notice of ever seeing him during her time on patrol out of her report, and in return he would keep hidden from others, the fact she was ever injured and running from hollows thought too weak to be able to even harm Samantha, a member of squad 11, home to the toughest Shinigami.
Mitsuoki nodded and grabbed the hilt of his zanpakuto before slowly drawing it. He inserted the tip in the ground and said "The last time we met, I was yet to learn my zanpakuto's name. This is Akatsuki to Tasogare..." Mitsuoki held the blade up and it formed into two swords as he said "Push and Pull." revealing it to be one of the few dual-wielded zanpakuto in existence. "The white sword is Akatsuki, the black one is Tasogare." Mitsuoki stepped closer to Samantha and gave her a light tap on her unbroken arm with the broad side of the weapon, leaving a black eclipse shaped tattoo in its place.
"Whenever my blade hits someone, a tattoo is left at the site of the impact. The effect will change rapidly. For example, the current effect is that each tattoo increases the amount of pain you feel." Mitsuoki would then gently tap the blade on the same spot. As gentle as the new tap was, Samantha would feel the tap as though it were a light punch. "If I were to intentionally cut you with my blade, there's a fifty-fifty chance of the cut appearing where the blade is, or, somewhere else on your body. This means that I could cut someone on the finger very lightly, and there would be a chance of their neck exploding. You won't need to worry about that since I'm just tapping."
Mitsuoki would make another tap and Samantha would feel her body growing weaker. "This one reduced your combat effectiveness instead of increasing pain. That last tap should have felt a lot weaker than the first one, but you're probably feeling your muscles getting weaker as well. This is temporary." he would say before another tap is made, and two tattoos appeared instead of just one. "There, the effect that time is you gain double tattoos. Now I can explain what I am going to do to help you, and you do not need to worry for any further effects. You should also feel your muscles returning to normal."
"The power of my zanpakuto that is most dangerous, however, is not the randomness of the effects or the possibility of instant death from the most minor of cuts. It is a technique that I have only ever once used at its full power, and no one alive is aware that it is possible. The name of this ability is Change of Heart. It allows me to take over and control another individual's body. Do not confuse this with simple mind control, it extends far beyond that. I control every last one of your organs, your body's systems, your very thoughts if I desired. I control you- all of you. Now you understand why I do not use this power, and I do not wish for anyone else to know of it."
Mitsuoki would take a breath before looking Samantha in the eyes. "What I am going to do is increase your metabolic rate by a factor of three. As a result, the rate at which your body exchange nutrients, the rate at which your cells divide, the rate at which your nerves send and receive signals, and the rate at which your mind may interpret these signals shall be increased by the same factor. I am also going to re-activate your body's ability to produce stem cells. Stem cells are capable of altering themselves to become other cells, so, they will increase your natural healing rate even further. However, you will also be consuming more food and using the restroom more often each day. If you do not eat, your muscles will rapidly be broken down in order to account for the nutritional requirements of your body."
Mitsuoki would clear his throat and say "I will not activate this increase until after you have eaten. I will also start it at a much slower rate and work up to the triple speed, so you are not at risk of going into shock. With that said, we should get you to your gigai."

"So you know your Zanpakutou's name now? That's quite an improvement." Sam remembered they day she'd figured out her own Zanpakutou's name but she'd suppressed her Zan's spirit soon after finding out its properties hadn't even come close matching with Squad 11's ideals. In some ways, Sam was glad Mitsuoki couldn't remember her. He'd never asked before but in the past, whenever she sparred with someone her blade would always be kept intentionally reversed and she would never strike an opponent with her Shikai's blade. Given her strength compared to the others, it wasn't hard to convince others she did it out of concern for their own safety. Reality was much more cruel however. After attaining Shikai, Sam had soon discovered her Shikai blade had no cutting power. Absolutely none... In fact the blade of her released Zanpakutou couldn't harm anything and in fact healed whosoever it ended up cutting. Her first practice with release, against a Hollow. In that instance, Sam quickly reversed the blade and ended the hollow's life all the same. That'd happened nearly twenty years ago now... Sam endured the strangeness that was Mitsuoki's blade and its effects. The pain, the heaviness, the weakness. If this could help her avoid unnecessary scrutiny then so be it. "You're Blade is something else. I've heard of Hollows who could do something akin to mind control by taking over a target's body using a parasitic method of control but I never thought that a Shinigami's Shikai could come even close to doing the same..." Sam listened to Mitsuoki's explanations, the reasons for how she felt, as well as the method for which he intended to help her heal faster. "That, is a rather interesting way of using your ability. How long does it last exactly? And... Unfortunately I did not bring a Gigai with me. It did not feel necessary for me to bring one as I was only coming here for duties centered around patrolling the area and dispatching any Hollow that appeared."
