Riku rounded a few corners away from Jae. Once she was confident he hadn't followed her, she started twisting her hair into twin tails. However, she realized it was pointless after finishing the first one. She didn't bring her hero outfit with her as she expected to only go for a short run. There was no need to prepare for any heroics. Conceding that she wouldn't be able to help, she undid her hair and began tracking the hollow down. Her skills at doing so weren't the greatest and it took her a few minutes to return to its trail, but eventually she found herself less than a hundred meters away. As her senses sharpened, she turned the corner and came face to face with the creature.
Fortunately, it hadn't attacked the playground, but now she appeared to be its target. As it rose to its height of seven feet tall, Riku hastily darted away. Her movements were quick enough to avoid its large tree like arms from slamming down and crushing her comparatively small form. A series of quick dodges kept her just out of arms reach, but did nothing to alleviate the pressure it placed on her. Riku considered tapping into her abilities for a moment. Her intentions were to ask a Shinigami questions upon its arrival about her abilities and only use them if needed. After the hollow roared and swung down with enough force that the shockwave was enough to send her a few meters, it seemed she would have to do just that.
Keeping a bird's eye view of the hollow on it's travel, Jae soon found an opening allowing for him to strike whenever he felt ready. Poised to go in, his advance was halted by a familiar figure coming in to view. 'Is that her?', he thought. Upon further observation, he'd come to see that not only was it the girl he bumped in to earlier, but she was seemingly chasing after the lumbering creature. Remaining perched up on the ledge, he'd take a seat on the edge allowing for his legs to dangle freely. While the hollow was a menacing threat, it wasn't anything he couldn't quickly deal with when the time called for it. Intrigue guided his actions from this point as he was eager to see what this Yagami girl was capable of. One wouldn't simply run up to a spiritual being and confront it without a certain level of confidence thinking they could handle the problem....right?
Watching the girl get knocked clear off her feet meters from her original position was enough to raise some alarms. What was her super power? Wouldn't someone usually open up with that? Perhaps sitting on the bench wasn't the best course of action. Slipping back off the ledge, Jae rouse to his feet only to vault off the top of the building with the use of his flash step. Reappearing directly in front of the seven foot beast, he looked to catch it off guard and quickly eliminate it without much time for a reaction. His left arm was extended out towards the hollow and his hand already formed in a standard finger-gun position. In a moment, a flash of red energy exploded from the tip of his finger in shotgun like fashion that shattered effortlessly through the mask of the creature with a BANG! In moments, the rest of the hollow's body dissipated in a ghastly black essence signifying it's defeat. Turning around too view the condition of the girl, he'd break the ice with some choice words.
The situation did look bad. From an outside perspective, Riku was in more than enough danger to elicit being called a damsel in distress. There was far less fairy tail glamour as this lacked a tower and an evil king, but Jae fit the part of the white knight. As Riku looked up at him from the ground, the sun haloed his form giving him a powerful presence. If she were the type to believe in such things as fate or love at first sight, this was surely the beginning of her story.
"It could have been," her response still chilly.
Riku rose to her feet and dusted herself for the second time today. There were questions to be asked once she looked proper and formulated the best way to attack. She pondered just who or what Jae was. His ability to interact with the spiritual world, let alone produce an attack of such caliber was astounding. Only the Shinigami were able to do those feat, but Shinigami he was not.
"What are you?" She went straight to the point with little tact. "You are not a Shinigami nor are you a hollow. Are you a human?" She paused, searching his expression for any reaction before continuing. "You were able to see the creature and could kill it. How long have you been able to do these things?"
An eyebrow quirked in surprised and then furrowed as his face slanted into a state of confusion with the onset firing off of questions aimed at his way in regards to his status as a person.
"Uh....I'm a human? Question mark?"
He wasn't entirely sure why the girl was so surprised about his ability to put down a hollow which he considered trivial at best. Then again, she wasn't coming up to task with it when confronting the thing. Though his response possibly spoke to his lack of understanding of what he really was. Jae Gu was aware of how his powers worked to an extent, but not to the point of thinking that he was any different than other humans with super powers. The term 'Fullbringer' wasn't in his vocabulary. Taking an additional moment to consider her next question, he'd use a bit of his spiritual insight to really hone down on the status of her POWER LEVEL. To his surprise, Yagami was appearing to be so low that she barely registered on his radar. Certainly above an other pedestrian but if he had to guess, that hollow he got rid of could of done her in if he wasn't around to intervene. It was either that or she was just really, really good at hiding her true potential. After much deliberation, the male shrugged almost coming off as nonchalant about his skill set.
"I dunno' I guess since elementary school maybe? I think that sounds about right. I mean..." He thumbed in the direction behind him. "That guy wasn't that big of a deal, really. What about you though? What happened? Forget to take off your training weights before battle? Or were you just doing your best Rock Lee impression?"
He confirmed her question about his race with a nonchalant attitude that was almost demeaning. The answer to the question wasn't so obvious at a glance considering just how deep the spiritual rabbit hole went, but she could understand being accused of being something other than what she'd been her entire life. However, him being a human made things more complicated and also pointed her squarely at a future goal. If he was able to attack with what she assumed was a spiritual blast, there was no reason she couldn't also do something with proper technique and training.
"I didn't think the hollow was an issue, but I wasn't living out an anime power fantasy." Although Rock Lee would have been a great choice. "If I felt I were truly in danger I would have fled. I intended to keep the hollow entertained until a Shinigami came to slay it as they so often do. However, I suppose my intention was merely to find a being well versed in the spiritual world to answer questions. What I didn't expect was to have more after the person arrived."
Riku still searched his person with a scrutinizing gaze. He wasn't out of shape, but he wasn't entirely muscular. It appeared to her eyes that spiritual strength required more finesse than simple weight training for the physique. That realization was painfully obvious after coming to it.
"What happened for your abilities to manifest? How have you been able to grow them, assuming you weren't always as strong as you appear now?"
It was interesting to hear the girl's line of reasoning when it came to her tactics she'd put on display just a moment ago. However, such selfless heroics probably should be left to the protagonists often found in the world of manga and anime. This wasn't enough to just think, no Jae thought she needed to know this.
"Perhaps being bait to keep the bad guy busy until someone with actual power comes around isn't the best thing for you. After all, if the shinigami come around as often as you say, then they probably would of been there in time to take care of business anyway. Just like I was."
Dulling out his little bit of advice, he'd take a moment and try to recall the events that led up to the awakening of his powers. The male didn't really keep track of his progress too much. Rather, he just went through the motions with testing his limits whether it be through new ideas inspired by the media he consumed or just experimenting with what he already had.
"Uhhh. Well I don't really remember. I think stuff started getting weird when I was just a little kid. Yeah...that sounds about right. I use to be afraid of the dark like most kids were. I always thought there was something hiding in my closet. Of course my parents always said that it was just my imagination or that there was nothing really there. I think mom at the time told me to be a brave boy and just confront the monsters and them you're not afraid. She said, 'if find a monster, punch it in the nose! Be brave like the heroes in your favorite shows. They'll run away scared and never bother you again!'. Turns out though, one was kinda' real. It worked though. It was super anime like. My pendant glowed and everything."
He shrugged while not entirely being sure of how much else to explain things. Jae usually doesn't think to much about his past buy sort of just lets things come as they go.
The way his powers manifested was not entirely different than the ways Riku's had. While his recount of the tale lacked detail she sorely wanted, the basics were all there. Things were strange for him as a child and a stressful situation awakened his latent spiritual powers. For Riku, there wasn't a monster, but the situation was just as intense. She wanted to save a child who was going to be hit by a truck. Looking back on it, she couldn't recall thinking before she sprung into action. She didn't even bother removing her headphones until after the child was safely scooped into her arms and on the sidewalk.
"Your pendant?"
Riku equated it to a talisman of power. As he was keen to bring up multiple times, having spiritual power was very much like an anime. However, if there was indeed talismans that helped channel power, it could explain the apparent gap in their strength. There was never anything of the sort unless her headphones counted. They never glowed, nor did she really need them to use her abilities. She could use any music around her as long as she could feel the beat, but headphones made things more consistent and easier to perform for any extended period of time. She also had a pair with her at all times before her powers so it fit nicely.
"What is this pendant you speak of? Do you need it to use your abilities?"
Jae looked to show her the pendant he spoke of. It was kept under wraps as it really wasn't for show. Just held significant sentimental value for him. Reaching up to rummage his hand around under his button-up shirt, Jae snagged the thin chain and pulled out the pendant to put on display. It looked to be a locket of sorts with a golden crest and silver pointed appendage that protruded from the bottom matching the material of the chain hanging around his neck. He allowed for the pendant to free hang from his finger tips while showing it off to the girl.
"My parents said it belong to my birth mother. I always felt connected to it in that way, like she and my birth father are always with me while I have it around even though I don't really know them. I noticed it acts as a conduit for some of my abilities but not all of them. It's not very often that I have to rely on it though."
Slipping the locket in to the palm of his other hand, he'd thumb against it's exterior. Finger running over that keyhole with his mind pondering on what it could be locked away. While Jae had abilities that allowed for him to see through exteriors with ease, this was always something that blocked it. Whether it be a subconscious mental block preventing him from accessing the contents or a spiritual seal guarding it, he'd remain clueless. His glance shifted back to Yagami.
"I'm not sure if this lock is for show or what. It didn't come with a key though. What about you? What's your thing?"
"I've never had anything of sentimental value that I could consider a talisman. My abilities manifest," she paused. She couldn't easily come up with the words to say, but she wanted to answer the question truthfully. "My abilities manifest as speed after listening to music. If anything, I would have considered my headphones to be a talisman, but a single pair was never the catalyst for the activation of my abilities. I've also had limited success with using my abilities without headphones.
Riku kept her eyes on his locket as she spoke. Her mind wildly guessed at the contents of said locket. Everything from a picture of his family, to something darker like a piece of mummified human flesh. It didn't have to make the most sense, it just needed to be small enough to fit and plausible that it could give him some form of power. Plausible being used lightly as what was possible in their world was being rewritten each day. Or perhaps the true potential of the world was being understood my accurately each day. In either case, she couldn't rule out the craziest of ideas despite her better judgement.
"Have you ever tried opening it? I'm sure a locksmith could assist in finding out what's inside."
"So music tuned super speed? That's kinda' cool. I always thought what it was like to have super speed like that dude in those western comics. I mean, I can get around places in great time on foot but super fast kicks and punches? Now that's another level."
Slipping the trinket back under his shirt, he looked to continue his day as normal all the while addressing the girl's questions and concerns as they came.
"I have. Since there's not been a key, I've tried having a mold created for it to open it up a while back but it didn't really work out. It's like something was jamming the locking mechanisms. The locksmith stated they wouldn't know too much more unless they took it apart but...I don't know. I sorta' rather not let that happen. I keep thinking like...what if he can't fully put it back together or what if it's empty y'know? Eventually I'll come around to getting it open in some way or another but I'm not in any real rush. Speaking of which, where were you headed? I don't think we'd need to worry about more of those popping up again for a little bit."
She nodded along to his words, understanding and accepting the sentiment of something having an unquantifiable value to a person. She didn't share the feelings, but wouldn't pry any further into someone's past if they weren't already forthcoming. Riku expected people to do the same for her, yet being a girl robbed her of that on more than one occasion.
"I wasn't headed anywhere in particular. I was on a route I often travel for exercise."
She adjusted her clothing again with the thought of jogging in mind. The new pair of headphones didn't fit well enough for full sprinting, but she could at least jog with them. She paid special care to make sure they were secure on her head before nodding towards the street.
"I would extend the offer to jog with me, but we have strayed far from the street we originally walked. Also, you seemed like you had some business somewhere when we first met." She was of course referencing the signature required message on his phone. "It was nice to meet you and I thank you again for the headphones. I will cherish them as I would a gift from a close friend."
She bowed again to him before turning towards the street. Riku honestly didn't care if he followed which spoke volumes about her opinion of him. However, she wasn't fond enough to ask for his company just yet.
Given what had transpired, Jae saw no need to conceal his ability to get from place to place in a quick fashion since the girl no doubt had an idea of how things worked outside the world of ordinary people. In that way, he was able to be more honest about things and in hindsight, probably could of saved a bit of yen.
"I sorta' made a quick retreat to my house to do my thing while going to get your new headphones before hopping back in to the store. It was cutting things a little close but crisis averted. It helps being able to do things most people aren't able to do y'know?"
While Yagami was looking to part ways, Jae couldn't help but to want to press her for more interaction. He really didn't have many friends that were able to do super human things like he was so he often had to keep that aspect about him secret and be weary of those around him in case he needed to slip away. This girl was different. She gets it and she wasn't technically dead like the shinigami he came across. Jogging up to her side, he'd extend the offer to hang out a little more.
"Hey wait up. You wanna' go get lunch? There's a nice ramon shop in the area that I like going to. I figure since we're in the area and your whole exercising thing breeds hunger, we could go like....eat and talk about meta human things."
Jae's callout was barely heard over the new music Riku started playing. Already at a slow jog, she slowed down even further so he could catch up. Ramen did sound nice and she typically would eat after her workout, something simple she made at home. She shrugged as she continued jogging down the street.
"Ramen could be a good change of pace," she mentioned as she started moving at her original jogging quickness again.
The expensive headphones bounced more than she hoped so she replaced them after stopping at a corner. As she did, mused over his ability to get places quickly. She didn't know just how far his house was from the JUMP SHOP, but it begged to question just how quickly he could move. This was a chance to test her own skills without coming across as forced or an attempt to boast.
With her earbuds on, she skipped through a few songs to find one to start with(BPM 128). Satisfied with her choice, Riku's foot began to tap and then she bounced from side to side. Pulsating pink musical notes manifested in the air around her before suddenly she tore off into a full sprint. She didn't need to ask for directions as their was only one ramen shop of merit in the area and it wouldn't take too long to reach at this speed.
{Spoiler}Name: Tempo Class: Human Power Tier: I Type: Supplementary Range: Self Description: By syncing her heartbeat to the BPM of her music, Riku can hyper-accelerate her movements to inhuman levels. However, Cadence can't maintain this for very long at higher BPMs. (Current BPM and song will always be listed)

Eager to get to Ichiki's One Stop Ramen Shop, Jae looked to guide her along the way in case she wasn't aware of the location.m. Though given her change of pace, one could reason that she was already aware of the location. He hadn't thought to continue along with her at the jogger's pace as he didn't come dressed for general exercise as the girl had. After lagging behind a few feet, he figured he just meet her there.
"Right. I'll uh...meet you there. I guess."
Looking to just step off and skip ahead, he gave paused as he watch her stop, thinking she was going to acknowledge his announcement. To his surprise though, something much more interesting developed. A manifestation of music notes fluttered about the air seemingly spawned from the girl's frame perhaps in line with her musical choice. With a puzzled look about him, Jae curiously awaited what came next. This must be those abilities that she mentioned before. With that revelation coming to view, the sight of Yagami breaking in to a full sprint ahead and meta-human speeds threw him off his game.
"Woah! Wait..."
Words trailing off mid thought Was this a race? His eyes searched about for answers. The only obvious was to just fall back on his own skill sets. Even now he was wasting time. Turning towards the direction of the ramen shop, he'd step forward and disappear into his own high speed maneuver. The restaurant wasn't that far away so getting there only took him a moment or two to arrive. Jae liked to believe he his mastery of his high speed movement, or flash step as others called it, was tip top shape. No doubt he'd get there first. The only real question is just how much time would pass from his initial arrival to hers. Phone out in hand, he watched the clock keeping an eye out for Yagami who probably wasn't that far behind.
She imagined it wouldn't be too difficult for him to keep pace with her, but couldn't fathom how far he'd exceed her expectations. There was only a split second, the time it takes to snap or possible even blink, before he was travelling by her. It was like he was a blue blur, a sudden flash of color as he jumped by. To her eyes, he wasn't simply running, he was jumping ahead of her. Riku had seen this before when a Shinigami vanished in front of her eyes. If not for the few other times the scenario repeated, she may have never put together that it was indeed a form of movement beyond her own. At least, it was beyond her capabilities at the time being.
The idea of catching him was as fleeting as his image as it darted by. Instead, Riku looked to attempt a maneuver of her own. It was awkward and effectively slowed her down, but the motions were in place to ironically reach supersonic speeds. Attempting to do so her in her full sprint, she focused on a point seven steps away. The musical notes trailing behind her grew in frequency around her feet becoming brighter and more agitated. Where they once pulsed, they now looked heavily distorted though still under the same rhythm. The song she listened to built to the second drop and as it did she accelerated even faster.
At these speeds, the slightest difference in time was greatly exaggerated. Jae had made it to the shop long before her even if she couldn't have been more than a second or two behind. What he could do in one step took her a series of smaller though cleanly executed moves. As she arrived, she stopped just in front of him and gave him a nod of acknowledgment, both of his skills and a confirmation to herself that she could do the same.
As stated, his wait was rather brief. Just as he opened the timer app on his phone to track the time lapse, Yagami had appeared just around the corner to stop in front of him within moments. Mildly surprised at her ability to travel at such speeds with her special skill set, he looked to gain more insight on her capabilities while allowing her to stroll in to the establishment first with him tagging along behind.
"Neat. I always thought super speed was a strange quirk to have, given how most are able to utilize step tricks and maneuvers to jump around from place to place."
Jae wasn't a stranger to speaking about his powers out in the open, even if he weren't keen on using them in public too often. If anything, most people that may overhear his conversations on the subject just think he's speaking on the works of fiction like shows or literature. Taking a second to few today's special, the male sought after the bowl that was heavy on spice and meats meshed with the noodles and a side of steam vegetables to dip in at his leisure. After placing his order, he turned to the girl allowing for her to do the same before continuing their conversation.
"What else can you do? Does speed only apply to your legs? Or do you have like...super fast punches. Y'know like that one guy from that old anime who makes those super high pitch noises when he fights. I can't remember his name..."
Demonstrating the sounds seemed a little cringe, so he wouldn't do so. At least not in public.
Riku ordered the same thing every time. If anyone paid her any mind, they could easily guess that she wanted a chuka soba with no bamboo, no fishcake, and no green onions. She also had taken a liking to ordering a plate of gyoza to start. With her order placed, she began prepping her area. Napkin, chopsticks, and the glass for her water were all placed rather particularly.
"My abilities seem to affect more than my legs," she continued the conversation. "I can't say for sure, but I find myself able to think and react quickly when they are active so to speak. It doesn't make me any smarter, but I'm able to process my own thoughts in a shorter span of time than usual. I suppose it would be entirely too detrimental if my mind couldn't keep up with my body."
By no means was Riku a slouch in her schoolwork. She often got good grades and in turn became one of the popular girls among certain crowds. However, she would never claim to be a genius by any stretch of the word. Her expertise was rooted firmly in playing games and the little martial arts she pursued.
"Although," her attention now focused fully on Jae. "I often find myself wondering just why my abilities are what they appear. How exactly am I to grow my capabilities even more, and to what end."
Listening to her go on about her abilities was enough to get his creative juices flowing. With the arrival of their meals, Jae found this to be the perfect time to brainstorm. It seemed like Yagami was just starting out in her journey through the world of meta-humans. One that he had a head start on years prior. With the set of chopsticks at his disposal, he'd drip them in to his bowl of freshly prepared ramen and start to swirl the rice noodles around in circles pondering on the subject.
"So speed is your game. Not to trivialize your ability to run very fast but I think someone's who's all about super speed would be a natural when it comes to the step game. If you learn that, you can put your speed to use elsewhere."
Taking a moment to stuff his face with noodle goodness, he'd slurp past the up the piping hot food dragon style. Adding to his pallet, he'd nom on a bit of the steamed broccoli that was on the side in attempts to counter balance the spice. Mouth semi-full, he continued with his thought process.
"So like.."Chew chew chew."Quick thinking abilities combined with some form of super fast mixed martial arts sounds good or...ooooor maybe you could do more music stuff. Could you imagine having your own theme music that powers you up even more? Like it irradiates form your body in some kind of aura that everyone can here. Y'know like bringing anime stuff to life. You ever watch Naruto? The anime is seems so much cooler than the manga if you factor in the sick soundtrack that comes with it. Think about it, you come against this big bad demon thing and suddenly a thrilling tune creeps up then blasts into a hype as it rises your adrenaline pushing you to do things. Better yet, different music can affect your skills in different ways. Some could make you tougher, stronger or faster. Some could have other psychological effects on others."
Jae could feel himself getting carried away so he'd simmer down a bit to allow for the girl to chime in with her own input. Additional slurping sounds ensued as he continued to chow down.
His ranting about her abilities was almost adorable. It was as if he found a new friend that he could relate to after moving to a different town. He was far more excited to brainstorm about her progression than her at the very least. His ideas weren't all that bad too.
"I'm not sure having my own theme music is something I desire though," she lied when she got the chance to reply.
It did sound truly badass to have music that played just for her. She imagined what the song would be or where it would come from. Her soul? A song that manifested from her determination to complete some task in front of her. How would that even sound? The real question was would she like it? What if her soul produced something she couldn't stand listening to? That would be the absolute worst scenario. She didn't want to consider being stuck with a part of her that she couldn't change.
"I haven't found the style of music to affect me differently either." She continued after eating a bit more. "It is mostly around the tempo of the music I'm listening to. The faster it is, the faster I can move. That's why I started calling my power tempo." She blushed a bit at the end of her statement.
She thought back to her first times attempting to control her powers. The way she comically shouted 'drop it' or 'drop the bass' were laughably embarrassing.
