Riku gazed absentmindedly at the television behind the glass. She'd often wondered the same thing. What was the point of all of this? Life. The afterlife. Why did she need to be privy to what people spent their entire lives questioning? The knowledge wasn't a blessing or a curse. It both had its pros and cons. It was simply another facet of existence, one that seemed increasingly more pointless as time went on.
Even more so, her perception of time seemed to be blurring each day. If life didn't end at death, what did each day truly mean? The memories she held so dear would eventually be replaced as her years numbered in the thousands. Was that not worse than actually being put to rest? It was all too depressing to think about, so she ran. It was no longer a waste of time to stay in the condition possible. Physical and spiritual were at odds, but the strength gained was universal and eternal.
Her usual route brought her deep into the heart of Karakura with today being no different. With music(BPM-141) in her headphones, she jogged down the street at a quickened pace. Sweat already glistened on her brow and soaked her shirt. This was her life.

The scene was set.. JUMP SHOP ! Located in the Karakura Market district. It was here that a young male took to his passion with his nose buried beneath the pages of some of the greatest mangaka to grace the shelves. It was here that Jae Gu felt at home. Completely immersed in the world of manga, his current genre of choice for the day was the best that Shoujo had to offer. Curled up in the corner of the store, his eye fluttered through the finely drawn characters and insatiable bits of dialogue that came with them.
"Hohoho. Silly Otonashi-kun. You won't get her that way."
He mused. The male often lost track of time while indulging himself in his literary escapades. It wasn't until he got a notification on his phone, that he'd break out of his zone to address it. His eyes grew wide in shock of the message that was delivered.
"It's here? ALREADY?!?"
Without much deliberation on his next action, Jae threw the manga he had pulled to read back on the shelf and sprinted out of the shop in a hurry. Being mindful of the shopkeeper, he'd pivot around to wave as a courtesy. However, this led to a mishap that caused the teen to stumbled into a potentially unsuspecting female who was jogging on by. Hopefully the collision wouldn't be too much of a mess.
Although she was quicker on her feet than a normal person, her abilities didn't give her omniscience. Her eyes shifted to the opening door of a shop she was passing. In order for her to dodge the person coming out, she needed to first know the collision was going to take place. Alas, minimizing the impact was the best she could manage with such short notice. Her hips pivoted as she cut her stride short. The rest of her body followed bringing her face to face with the hurried young man. Hands up and out, she braced but was expectedly overpowered and toppled over. The fall ended with Riku on her back wincing at the pain. She didn't shout, but she did groan for a few seconds. It took a few seconds more for her to process the predicament.
Her eyes opened to blurred vision. Fortunately her glasses were only askew and not entirely broken. She wormed her hands free of the man's weight to fix them and in doing so realized how silly it was for her to allow this to happen. Of course, omniscience would make it all easier, but she could solve this particular problem with quicker reactions. It was a fault she'd been aware of for a few weeks now. In order to sync her heartbeats to the music, she effectively deafened the world around her. She needed a way to either not need music or to be able to sync up with it at a lower volume. Still, that was for a later time.
On the moment of contact, Jae had been fortunate enough not to eat a face full of concrete on the way down. While he sought to brace himself for the fall, a feminine figure had the displeasure of being the one thing to cushion for his frame. This didn't last long at all as the male immediately went to role off soon after the other had pipped up. With a look of concern, he'd apologetically look to make amends.
"Oh crap. Sorry! Ar-are you uh...alright?"
Being quick to scramble for his phone that had fallen at the wayside, he'd retrieve it and stumble to get up first. One hand now extended out to aid the girl in getting to her feet , he'd continue to explain his failure on being aware of his surroundings.
"I was in such a hurry to get where I was going that I didn't pay attention to who'd be in my way."
If the stranger hadn't accepted the helping hand by now, the teen would just let it hang back at his side. Feeling his cell phone begin to vibrate once again, Jae hastily took to check it once more. 'Signature Required' was the message glaring back at him. A look of dread animated his facial features to near comically proportions. He had forgotten that to prevent anyone else from snooping in to the his package, he'd have to be the one to sign for it to allow for a complete delivery. Usually this wouldn't be an issue. However, given the untimely nature of this early delivery and his current interaction, he'd not be able to slip away into an alley to use his super fast quick travel skills he'd usually default to in times like this. His residence wasn't too far away, but running at a basic level wouldn't allow him to get there before the delivery man or woman or gender neutral person left with package in hand. He struggled to make this moral decision. Abruptly run away from the person he just accosted or stick around and be the good nature individual who cared for his fellow citizen at a base level. Sweating intensifies.
She took the offering of help and rose to her feet. An explanation wasn't needed for the mishap, but she listened anyway. Like many others in Karakura Town, he was in a hurry going nowhere fast. The whole ordeal would have been brushed aside like the dirt off her shoulder if not for the change in his expression as he looked at his phone. She tilted her head to get a better look. It didn't appear the screen had broken, so she assumed the message was the cause.
"Signature required," she said questioningly as she moved just behind him to retrieve her own.
Her phone was also okay, but her headphones were ruined. She hated using earbuds, but they were the least cumbersome when doing light running. The custom headphones designed for her hero outfit were far more secure. However, they called lots of attention to her. She also didn't feel the need to pull her hair into twin tails just for exercise. The arcade, maybe. Fortunately or unfortunately, this wasn't the first time she wrecked a pair of earbuds while running and she was prepared. She reached into her pocked and pulled out her reserve pair, not thinking that he'd respond as she placed them in her ears.
It was seem the that female had caught glimpse of his screen and used his exaggerated facial expression to potentially piece together the dilemma he was currently facing. Perhaps it was just a fleeting observation as her tone combined with her follow up actions seemed to convey only a grain of salt's worth of interest. Jae was prepared to respond in kind and skedaddle when he noticed the damaged state of the headphones that were perhaps crushed under the weight of their collision. A bit of guilt set in. While the female seemed rather nonchalant about the damage, and quick to pull out another set, the male looked to make amends while essentially burning the candles at the ends for time here. The neurons in the brain began to fire off like clusters. Time for some quick maths.
His home was only a few miles away from his current spot. If he were confident enough in his abilities, he could probably cover that bit of distance with his special set of skills in two minutes, give or take. Maybe. The delivery person are only permitted to await a certain amount of time before having to retire to the move on to other orders. Five minutes to be certain. Perhaps it was more like three minutes if he were being optimistic but he would subtract one minute to be safe so two minutes. However, one must account for the time it would take to for the delivery person to write out their 'sorry we missed you' note which adds a least five to ten seconds depending on how thorough the person was being. Checking the time stamps on his message log, he would notice that the message had been sent two minutes ago. However, there's no 'missed delivery' message just yet. There's still a chance!
"Sorry about your headphones. I can replace those for ya. Though I guess you...already got a spare.."
Those ears were covered, perhaps his message was not received. Perhaps it was. Jae had extended the olive branch which was good enough but what if she responded? That's more time to prolong their interaction which is less time he had to work. He needed to act now or risk losing out on the goods. Then, the idea sprung into his head like a gamefied quest marker popping up above his head. He can just travel there and back within minutes. He just need to play it off like he was going to go get some from the jump shop. Throwing his hands up, he'd usher to wait where he was while slowly backing up towards the shop doors.
"Wait here! I'll go get some! I'm pretty sure there's a few on display in the back of the store here."
Turning his back, he'd rush inside the store, dashing behind isle after isle till he thought his figure would be obscured from the main entrance away from her view should she had decided to stay there. With that effort, he's slip out through the back door into the alley.
"Whew..Okay."
It was GO TIME. Concentrating on his form, the spiritual particles on his feet dazzled around to help amplify his step with their translucent nature. In the moment, he'd vanish. Destination inbound. Operation: G E T T H E G O O D S was under way. Time was ticking as he traveled distances between the shop and home with relative ease but still at a hurried pace. The teen reached in residence just in time to see the deliver man begin his retreat to the vehicle. Frantically waving his arms about to gain the man's attention, Jae would secure his status as present and sign off on the order, requesting that the boxes be left at the side of the door. There was no time to throw them inside his home. Plus he needed a distraction for the guy so that he could slip away and head back to the scene of the crime, after checking for the coast to be clear of other onlookers.
"Y-yeah just right there. Thank you!"
Scrambling back out of view, he'd rush to the side of his house and poof again. The male was going to the distance and hopefully his momentary absence would of gone unnoticed as he stumbled back in to the alleyway of the store and slipping back in the store. Inconspicuously. Yeah.
His words were completely unnoticed until his gesture got her attention. Riku popped one of the buds out of her ear just as he disappeared into the store. She wasn't sure exactly what he wanted from her. Did he want her to stay? She considered the possibility of him feeling a pang of guilt, thinking he could potentially want to replace the broken headphones she held in her hand. It didn't seem too likely, she did have a new pair after all. Her shoulders shrugged as she decided it couldn't hurt.
However, it wasn't long until she picked up on a possible manipulation of spiritual energy in the area. It wasn't too strong. Not that she was too keen in sensing it, but Riku could tell it wasn't one of the hollows or Shinigami. Hollows were far more destructive whenever they surfaced and Shinigami typically weren't far behind them. In fact, Riku could really recall a Shinigami being simply out and about the town. They all seemed duty bound, but she didn't know their lives. Maybe they enjoyed spending time in comic shops or eating at maid cafes.
A few moments later, she felt the same energy again. There was definitely something going on.
Slouching up against the back door, he looked over to his left to see a if that stand of ear buds were right where he said they'd be. They weren't. Jae had forgotten that he had blurted that statement out as a throwaway in order to buy time. Thinking about it, the teen couldn't recall the JUMP SHOP ever selling standard headphones in this location. Jae was now faced with a new challenge. One that he didn't need and perhaps one that didn't really exist for anyone else who'd be faced with this situation. He could just walk out and state there wasn't anything he could realistically do here or he could go somewhere else if he really wanted to do replace what he had a hand in breaking. Hell. He could of just given her his own set. Setting off, he'd meander around the isles, contemplating his options. Why was this such a morale dilemma for him? Then out of the corner of his eye, came the idea as it nearly passed him buy.
"EUREKA! "
Those dark colored hues zero'd in on a headset. It was a collectible, part of the Vocoloid series. Quick to grab it, he check the price tag that came stuck at the bottom near the bar code.
"Two...Two-hundred thousand yen?!?"
His heart sank with the end of his hole being in a hole as deep as it was going. That was kind of an harsh investment as an consolation for ruining someone's stuff. But in his quest for affordable headphones on the spot, there weren't much left in terms of options. Contemplating his investment, his mind conjured a freak scenario of what would be his new reality should he just blow off this one person or come clean with have lied about the existence of affordable alternatives.
Girls gets ticked off that he lied or he brushed her off. A scene is made. More onlookers form as attention gets drawned from other outside services. Local authority gets involved. Jae guy gets taken in to custody for assaulting a female and damaging her property. Rumors of his crime spreads to the school. Jae Gu Choi the criminal is socially exiled. Jae loses any ability to graduate or get a job. Homeless Jae is homeless. Depression. Death.
Or he pays two hundred thousand yen and prospers. Minding the fact that he barely knows this person and is completely blowing his small incident way out of proportion. Regardless, the purchase was justified in his mind. Slinking to the counter to cash out, he'd hand the item over to the shop keeper and reluctantly utter,
"...O-one of these please..."
Beep! Goes the product. The card is swiped. The item now bagged. The deed was done. Should this random girl still be waiting his return, he'd hold up the bag and offer it to her, forcing a smile.
Riku didn't love blue, but she didn't hate it either. Shockingly, pink was her favorite color followed closely by black. People aired more on the side of black considering her sunny disposition. Although it wasn't worth mentioning that blue was her fourth favorite color behind white.
"Aren't those expensive?"
She knew that answer the moment she laid eyes on the headphones. They were a collectible item in the second vocaloid series of audio wear. This particular pair was on for the fan favorites. The band was shaped into cat ears with inside which strobed to the music coming through. There was even an option on these to play the music through those speakers so others could listen as well. They were amazing to say the least and something Riku wanted for a long time.
"You didn't have to buy these for me." She was happy he did. "I wouldn't have allowed it if I knew what you intended." That was a lie. "You can take that back for a refund."
Her words said one thing, but her actions said another. She hadn't realize how she clutched the bag, only looking up from it once she finished speaking. Her stoic expression remained with a slight difference. Her usually silvery eyes gleaned like hot sapphires for the briefest of moments.
"I don't want you to burden yourself for me," she held the bag out for him to take back.
The girl was surely making it hard for him to not take her up on the offer. He was already reluctant to spend the cash on such a purchase, and with her acknowledging the expensive nature of the headphones to the point of offering him a chance to take them back, Jae seriously contemplated on cashing in for the refund. His hands reached out as if to take the bag back in to possession. Fingers crinkling against the plastic but not pulling forward. Instead, he'd nudge the gift back towards her, turning down the opportunity to walk back his guilty purchase.
"Keep it. You're right. It's a little pricey but consider it an apology for breaking your other ones. It's...no big deal. I've spent more for lesser reasons."
While the latter part of his dialogue was true in a sense, it the male would be lying if he said it was a common occurrence. This purchase would put him in a deeper hole than he was initially prepare for but nothing that he couldn't deal with. Retracting his forward stance, he'd sigh and stuff his hands in his pockets. The sense of urgency in his demeanor had subsided. The day was still young and his delivery had been successfully secured.
"So...I'm going to go this way. You looked like you were going that way too. I'll try not to run in to you this time. I'm Jae, by the way."
He extended his hand out as a formal greeting. The guy figured by now, it was an okay time be become acquainted with the other.
Riku had fully expected her offer to be taken. The headphones truly were expensive and not something you get someone as an apology, let alone an apology for someone you just met. These were more like a Christmas gift for your girlfriend after saving up paycheck after paycheck. It would be the one she wanted all year and she'd be floored by it. However, he insisted she kept it and she was startled. Her stoic expression, which had been breaking down slowly as she waited his answer, shattered to pieces. Her cold demeanor warmed, a rosy tint spreading across her cheeks. Eyes widened, she jumped and immediately thanked him.
"Thank you." Her voice was sweet and gentle, full of a youthful essence expected of a shy teenage girl.
Clutching the bag even tighter, she nodded to his assessment. If they were going in the same direction, she felt there no harm in having a proper introduction. The gift warranted that and it would stem some of the awkward tension. It also gave her an excuse to use the headphones right away.
"Yagami, Riku." She gave a quick bow before carefully opening the packaging. "You may call me Yagami."
Replacing the spare earbuds with the new headphones brought a smile to her face, one she didn't realize she was showing. The ears lit up as did her face with excitement. However, the smile was replaced with a look of sheer embarrassment when the music started playing through the speakers instead of the headphones. She fumbled about to find the switch on the wire, but by that time it was clear a Miku song had started.
He retracted his hand, acknowledging the bow as means enough for a formal greeting. Hands now stuffing themselves in his pockets, he'd seek to begin a steady stroll forward, only to be interrupted by a loud blare of music that leaked out the speakers of the new headset. Typical sweat drop emote here. Quick to look over at the girl who had been caught fumbling about with the new set, he'd acknowledge his recognition of the tune while commenting on her taste in music.
"Whoa. I wasn't aware that the headset came with some tunes. Cool. Unless that's straight from your own playlist. Are you a fan of Hatsune Miku? I've listened to a few songs myself online.."
Rummaging around in his left pocket, he'd pull out his phone which had a set of light blue ear buds neatly wrapped around it. Undoing a bit of the wiring so he could properly navigated around the apps of his phone, the male looked to share his own interests in music. Perhaps the two had similar vibes in melody. Pulling up his music app, he browsed the selection of music he had on hand.
"I have a couple high tempo songs of the like, nothing from her though. Most of my list is just comprised of anime intros, game sound tracks and a few tunes that I've picked up from other people. Some of it's a little obscure but that's the best kind. Radio jams can get a bit played out y'know?"
Edging the right earbud into his ear, Jae booted up one of his random songs that he enjoyed listening to while he was out and about. He started walking forward, keeping an eye on this Yagami Riku girl to see if she had decided to walk along with him.
He clearly played the situation smoothly in attempts to lessen her embarrassment. She was thankful he didn't make it a big deal, but more appreciative of his acknowledgment of the music. It seemed they had something in common which made walking together less weird. However, she couldn't say that it was her desire to spend time with him.
"Anime songs as well as game songs are often some of the best music for replay value."
She had a few of them in her library. Riku rather enjoyed the sounds of old 8-bit games. It was something about the way composers could make a melody that looped for hours not get annoying or grating on the ears that she simply adored. If she were to choose some of her favorites, Sonic and Mario would have to be at the top. There were also many songs from the dancing arcade games. She downloaded a great deal of In The Groove and Dance Dance Revolution songs. They weren't exactly game music, but songs used for the game.
"I agree," she nodded. "Radio music is often overplayed and created for the masses." A hipster thing to say even if accurate. She wasn't opposed to songs on the radio. A few of the songs she had were once on the radio, but they weren't being played anymore so they were more tolerable.
"May I?" She motioned towards the loose earbud on her side.
"Yeah totally. It's just about the bulk of my music library."
Extending the invitation to get a listen in on what he was playing per her request, Jae would lift the other ear bud allowing it to dangle towards her ear until it slipped in place. Judging by her comments, he'd guess she had a great idea of what his form of 'good' music sounds like. Tossing a brow her way, he looked to gauge her interests in his song of choice. Giving her a moment to ease in to the tune, he'd eventually pipe up with some idle dialogue.
"Song's from an OST of one of my favorite gaming IPs. Not sure if you're in to video games but if you ever find the time, you should give the album a listen. It's from the Persona series. The third one specifically but just about most of them have great tracks."
His eyes began to wonder about the surroundings that passed them by. Looking for familiar places and street signs to verify where he was, he'd catch something oddly out of place out the corner of his eye.
"Hm...?"
The two had just passed a local diner and were coming pass the alleyway behind it when Jae's footsteps slowed to a stop. He turned his head to focus his vision on what caught his attention. Between the clutter and dumpsters arranged at the side of the building, there was an hourglass, the size of a table lamp, poised in the center of the alleyway with what looked to be a file or folder place on top of it. He turned his attention to his new acquaintance, and thumbed in its direction.
"Who leaves one of those things just laying around?"
The awkwardness came back briefly as she placed the earbud in her ear. The wires were never long so they had to be much closer to each other. Both the proximity to Jae and the inability to perfectly match his pace gave her some unease, but one completely faded as the music could be heard.
Definitely a good song from what she knew was a good game. She hadn't played them all herself, but she read many people sing its praises. In every review, people mentioned how stellar the composition was. It brought characters to life and gave scenes perfect imagery, all things that were a must for good music to stand on its own. Riku had gotten so into the music, she hadn't realized that Jae's steps were slowing and eventually coming to a stop. After a few too many steps, the earbud popped out abruptly and she turned to face him.
"Leaves what?"
She hadn't a clue what he was speaking of. As far as she could tell, there was a collection of discard items in an alleyway. It wasn't until her eyes passed over the large hourglass that she realized something was unique. However, it was still just another piece of garbage thrown out with the other refuse.
"Is something wrong?" Her question didn't show any interest in the item, but she cared enough to know if she should.
Perhaps this girl's initial instincts about the thing were right. Perhaps this bit of curiosity was wholly unnecessary on his part and this was just another thing discarded along with the rest of the trash in this alley. However, Jae Gu was always the type to stick his nose in things that it didn't belong.
"Wrong? No not really. It's just you don't see these things all that often. These things are pretty niche items and can be expensive. It's just strange to see it just thrown out like garbage. I mean it doesn't even look broken...Just a sec..."
He stepped in to the alley, minding the trash to get a better look at the item in question. Upon further inspection, the male was able to discern that not only was this not garbage, but practically brand new. much of the sand was still occupying much of the space at the top of the figure signalling that it must of been recently placed. Taking it a step further, he looked to grab the folder that laid atop it's frame to view it's contents. He looked back over at the girl, waving the folder about in the air signalling her over if she wanted to come. If not, he'd waste no time in opening it up. With an inquisitive tone, he'd read out the message that was inscribe on the single piece of paper placed inside.
Jae said most of what she was thinking, but carried on about how different the hourglass was. Either due to juvenile curiosity or the desire to make a quick buck, Riku watched him enter the alleyway. She debated leaving at that point. Acquaintances they were, friends they were not. However, she gave him the chance to at least look things over and return to walking with her.
When he waved her over, she also entered the alley just as he began reading. As expected, it made very little sense to them. Well, it made less sense than expected, but whatever was found wasn't meant for their eyes. If people dug through trash often enough, they'd find all sorts of messages without any context. Without the context, a simple phrase could be interpreted completely wrong and numbers were just that. His searching glance in her direction earned a shrug of Riku's shoulders.
"It means nothing to me."
She reached for the paper to get a better look. Repeating the numbers slowly didn't provide any further insight. The numbers weren't sequenced in any way, nor die the words mean anything to each other. Riku supposed if they were read a certain way in English they could be made to rhyme, but that didn't help pain a picture. She shrugged again and handed the paper back to Jae before turning towards the street again.
With the sheet of paper back in hand, Jae took one last glance at the message. His mind's eye searing the text it's his brain and little it simmer in thought. The male was mildly intrigued at this odd thing that they stumbled on. After a brief moment to deliberate, he'd place the paper back into the folder and put it back where he found it.
"Hm...Weird."
Seeking to follow suit, the teen walked back out of the alley. His right foot casually kicked a stray can or two, still pondering on the set of words and numbers. Left earbud slotting itself back in his ear, he'd look decipher what he read through the power of the internet brought to him via his SAMSUNG GALAXY cellular device. Jae wasn't entirely sure of the girl's interest it what they encountered was anything more than fleeting. Perhaps he was just overly invested and making something out of nothing. Googling random numbers wasn't a good idea without giving proper clues on what they allude to. Though 'risen siren' isn't something that's often thrown around and apparently a much easier search.
"Aha! Risen. Siren. Top search result. It's the title of a concert. Looks like the show's coming up later this month. Although, I don't recognize any of these music groups. Girl bands aren't really my strong suit. What about you? Recognize any of these J-stars?"
He tilted the green over to Yagami's direction if she were interested in taking a look.
Riku had already cast away any thoughts of the paper when Jae sounded his eureka. With new direction guiding her thoughts, it turned out she was more knowledgeable than Jae. "That's Perfume," she said betraying a hint of interest. Cycling through her own library of music, she eventually landed on one of their songs she enjoyed. This time she purposely played it through the speakers so Jae could hear it.
A group of younger teens took notice of them walking down the street and started to follow. Riku couldn't tell if they were also fans of the music or they were admiring her headphones. The barely audible conversation was a mix of coveting and singing until they went their own way.
"Perfume is pretty popular because they are different. Their sound is more electronica than the usual pop."
The conversation as pleasant, one that Riku wouldn't have minded continuing if not for the sudden interruption of a hollow running across their path. It was small enough that it wasn't too threatening, but large enough that it could do some serious damage if not quickly dealt with. After her eyes followed the creature in the direction of the nearby playground, she turned to Jae and bowed lightly.
"I'm sorry, I must go now. It was nice talking with you."
Putting the pause on his music, the male looked to hone in on that electronic tune that blared out through that new, kitty eared pair of headphones that doubled as a stereo. Head bobbing to the beat, Jae affirmed his interest.
"I dig the beat. I'll have to give them a listen when I get home."
Another mental note snapped in the back of his mind and in in the notes of his phone just in case memory escaped him. While he looked down at the screen, he'd nearly miss the sight of the hollow that wizzed right past the two. The roaming creature wasn't too alarming for him and quite frankly seemed more like a chore he didn't feel like dealing with. Oddly enough, the departure of his potential, newfound friend gave him the opportunity to quickly seek out the hollow threat and dispatch it.
"Alright. Catch you later. Enjoy the new headphones!"
Watching the girl trot off, Jae took a few steps wards and crossed the street, minding any oncoming traffic. Dashing across, he'd follow through by sliding between the space of the two buildings to obscure himself from public view. Utilizing his ability to track spiritual signatures, he spot the hollow tainted presence just a block away.
"Right."
Nodding in affirmation, he leaned forward in a stance and step off, disappearing in a blink of an eye. Within seconds, he'd appear atop a three story building, getting an aerial view of the demon that plague the town. Not looking to alert it just yet, he kept his spiritual presence under wraps, allowing for it to move along till it traveled to a less concentrated area. Jae wasn't looking to draw too much attention to himself when taking care of these things. In fact, he usually leaves it to those sword wielding spirit beings that tend to make an appearance from time to time. Unfortunately, none were around. For now he'd wait, and contemplate what to use in his arsenal this time. Perhaps he'll use the spirit gun finger.
