DISTRICT #76 EAST RUKONGAI
SHUNSUI let out a long, low sigh, as he wandered the dull streets of district seventy-six, known as Sakahone (Reverse Bone). Despite being in the middle of the day the lanes between rows and rows of residential houses were surprisingly quiet. The souls that lived in the area, like so many others since the attack by the Sternritter under the command of the Wandenreich, had been remaining in their houses, seeking protection in case of another invasion. The tall Captain didn't rush, his pace calm and casual, as he sauntered along the dirt roads. The sun beat down, casting most of his face into shadow from beneath his straw hat, though a subtle breeze kept things feeling cool. "It's a good day for it," Shunsui said to himself, his handsome features set in a frown. "It's a shame you couldn't join me today, Jūshirō... soon, though, when you're well enough."There was a lot on the Shinigami's mind, a whirlwind of thoughts and concerns and fears. Not for himself, of course, because Shunsui could handle himself; no, instead he worried about his best friend, his loved ones, his squad members and all the souls in Soul Society that were relying on protection. The Sternritter invasion had been a near-rout, and had it not been for brave sacrifices and the enemy underestimating the Gotei Thirteen, perhaps today's walk might not have been possible. Shunsui clenched his jaw at the thought of the streets he traveled being little more than death and destruction... it was almost enough to ruin his mood. Almost. Nearby other members of the Hachibantai patrolled like their Captain, keeping eyes and senses alert to possible threats. The possibility of another attack was very real and Shunsui required that even his usually laid-back style be altered during the time of alert. No basking in the sun or snoozing today, or any other day, not until enough time had passed to begin returning to normal. And considering how much the Shinigami wanted to close his eyes and rest, he hoped it would be sooner rather than later. Such a good day for it, no doubt about it, Shunsui thought to himself, as he noticed faces peering out the windows nearby at him. Some children, some adults, all scared. With a smile and tip of his straw hat, the Captain greeted them silently, hoping to put some concern at ease with his presence outside of Seireitei. It wasn't often someone like him was seen this far from the center of Soul Society, but times were changed and the residents needed some stability and reassurance in their existences. "Okay, time for a short break!" Shunsui said suddenly, stopping in the middle of the road. "I've been walking all day and Nanao-chan is nowhere to be seen."The Captain crossed his legs and sat down in one fluid motion, his kimono flourished out around him, wafting up dirt clouds. Shunsui reached inside his robes and produced a small bottle of sake and a drinking dish. Tenderly the Shinigami placed the items in front of him, before he just as carefully unplugged the bottle and poured himself a drink. Immediately a sense of relief passed over Shunsui, as the beverage touched his tongue and filled him with that familiarity he had come to enjoy so much... "So, are you just going to stand there, or are you going to join me?"Shunsui glanced over his shoulder, from beneath the brim of his hat, at the individual that was behind... WC: 591

DISTRICT #76 EAST RUKONGAI
Mo Saitō had long had an obsession with the shiny and expensive. Having grown up in the poor Kusajishi district, it was a mark of status, of power over those around you. But now as a shinigami that didn’t matter too much, in fact it was only his love of his old gold necklace and matching wristband that had brought him here. This district was far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Seireitei that he could relax off duty and visit his favorite jeweler, Tanaka.
He had been waiting patiently in the dark living area, his arms crossed across his chest and feet tapping the cold floor. He could feel his skin crawling as he smelled the intense liquids that were being used to polish his precious belongings. His partly opened shinigami robes exposed his chest and the hair underneath it. He wanted to scratch it. The discomfort was all around his neck and wrist too. Patience, he told himself, There is a reason you always come here. His body stiffened as he sensed the faint reiatsu of shinigami in the area. If they found him here there definitely would be a few questions.
“Are you done yet?” Mo shouted suddenly.
“You’re so impatient Mo. You of all people should know that this cannot be rushed,” Tanaka said from a nearby room. “You should stop taking these beauties into the field and they will last longer and won’t need so much polishing.”
Mo scoffed at the idea as Tanaka labored into the room. Mo stood up immediately, his eyes wide with excitement. Tanaka slowly and gently put a tray with the jewelry onto a table beside where Mo was sitting. His movements were all slow and deliberate, signs of a man whose age had instilled purpose in him. Mo picked up the wristband and gently put it on his left hand and secured it with a soft click. He followed the same procedure with the necklace and let a huge grin cover his face as he felt the cold heavy metal on his chest again. His fingers touched the surface gently as if caressing it.
“Perfect right?” Tanaka mused from behind a bushy beard.
“You’re a grand master Tanaka,” Mo said with utmost respect, “I’ll be off now.” Mo walked confidently towards the door, opened it and let himself bask in the sunlight before putting on his trademark sunglasses. He instinctively patted his hair into place and he took a step forward. He froze in place for a second as he saw man with a straw hat. He recognized it immediately. Why was someone like him so far out? It would not do to be discovered here. He swung around on the balls of his feet about to silently dip away into the surrounding forest when he heard the voice.
"So, are you just going to stand there, or are you going to join me?"
Mo hesitated for a moment, “Of course Captain Kyōraku. I was just-“ He began walking towards the captain and bowed his head gently, He noticed the small bottle of sake. Drinking on duty? He thought to himself. It must be a trap. Surely. What if it wasn’t and he rejected a genuine offer? Either way saying no was out of the question now.
“I was just thinking I could use a drink.” He removed his glasses before sitting down next to the captain, “I have been busy ummm, patrolling the area. Making sure everything is as it should be. Keeping the peace and all that. Working. Really really hard.”
Mo wasn’t sure what had made him give out such plain and obvious excuses but he was interested to see what Shunsui Kyōraku was like. He’d never had a good relationship with authority from his younger days but hopefully this wouldn’t continue.
