Mitsuoki was standing outside the entrance to the nibantai barracks with his hands held behind his back and feet slightly spread apart, a position known as 'parade rest' by the militaries of certain countries. While normally, Mitsuoki would be helping with reworking seals, opening the senkaimon and grabbing things that his higher ups wanted him to get, he was on his day off. Others in the Kido Corps took their days off to goof around; but, Mitsuoki had no concept of how to effectively do that. He didn't have friends to hang out with and there was no place in the Soul Society that he wanted to visit, so he took his days off to act as a member of the gotei and do some missions.
His reason for being in front the Squad Two barracks was that the mission he was offered had required a partner. The mission was to go out and gather data on the Quincies in the world of the living. The original mission had requested a member of an actual thirteen squads to accompany them to help fight if it was necessary; but, those members were somewhat busy. Mitsuoki was known to take on these kinds of assignments, so he was asked to step in as a slightly acceptable substitute.
Of course, they wouldn't be going after just any Quincy at random- that would be too easy. There was a specific group of Quincies that were causing a lot of pings on squad twelve's end, and they weren't able to find out why. The task was simply surveillance and reconnaissance. Go, find out what was going on, and leave without being noticed. The area was fairly wooded with a lot of obstruction overhead, so the two would have to find ways to get past that obstacle. Mitsuoki was also warned that since it's the world of the living, hollows were still a very real possibility.
Why exactly Theocelese was charged with...escorting this Shinigami, he didn't know. Especially since this was the type of thing he could do, but would have rather gone in guns blazing. Blod knew about his...extreme disdain for the Wandenreich. She heard him spout his curses and bellow the terrible acts of retribution he'd see through to doing if he ever got his hands on those vile wretches. As the one who was helping to acclimate him to the Soul Society, why did she even think this was a good idea? Was it some test? If so, it was one he was glad to fail. Fuck the chain of command. Fuck Yamamoto. Fuck Blod and the entire Gotei 13. Noxa would feed this day, and the kill-counter would click over many times before Theocelese's fury was satiated. Even then, was that even possible? If he got out of control, could he snap out of it? Maybe that's what this was about, or maybe he was to act as the protectorate to the man being sent to the Nibantai barracks.
He'd been watching the entrance to the barracks like a hawk. People came, people went. But none stood outside like Mitsuoki did. That seemed like the cue. Again, slighting the Gotei at whatever chance he could, the Arrancar did not wear the normal garments of the Shinigami. He wore his usual, ancient clothing. A royal blue tunic, a pair of black wrap pants, and sandals. His armaments were simple. His sword, his shield, and his axe.
"I take it you're the one I was instructed to wait for?" He asked, bringing a cigarette to his lips and lightning it. "I know we're supposed to track down the Quincy and watch them. Why, I do not now. What parameters of this mission are we looking at?"
Standing there, Mitsuoki had locked onto a very strange presence amidst the various different spiritual pressures in the area. He remained at parade rest while scanning the area and settling on the source of it, who was oddly coming towards him. Zanpakuto at his hip, Mitsuoki resisted every urge and instinct to draw against the man in light of a very interesting realization-- no one else was doing it. He scanned the man up and down, noting that he had a zanpakuto like a soul reaper, but he didn't wear their standard robes. No, he wore a blue tunic and black pants with a pair of sandals. The sword wasn't the only weapon he had, but it was the only thing that Mitsuoki actually cared for since it was accompanied by a boney mask, much like a hollow's.
The man stopped not too far from Mitsuoki and remained rather calm despite standing face to face with someone who was supposed to be his natural enemy. 'I take it, you're the one I was instructed to wait for?' was his question. Mitsuoki hadn't been made aware of any others coming on the mission aside from the nibantai member, but it wouldn't be the first or the last time that people had neglected to inform him of circumstance alterations. The man had mentioned that he knew what the mission was, but had no idea why they were doing it, or what exactly had prompted the task.
Just as Mitsuoki had opened his mouth to explain the mission's specifics, a man had stepped out from the barracks and looked to Mitsuoki with a somewhat disappointed expression. "I ask for a strong partner, and they send me the most useless member of the kido corps..." he said under his breath while also pinching the bridge of his nose. Mitsuoki's expression hadn't changed at all, it remained cold as ice, but elegant as a nobleman at the same time. Mitsuoki had spoke up and said "If that's a problem for you, feel free to open the senkaimon on your own. I guarantee that you won't get very far before the cleaner ends your mission prematurely." in a tone that was completely devoid of emotion while at the same time being condescending.
The man turned his gaze and looked at Theoclese, who had yet to introduce himself, and immediately froze. Mitsuoki had caught on to the fact that the man was slowly moving his hand to his blade. "I wouldn't do that." he said in the same emotionlessly condescending tone. The man looked to Mitsuoki with a confused expression. "You say I'm useless, but you lack basic observation skills. This area doesn't appear to be a battleground, which means this man has gone unopposed. He isn't exactly trying to hide his spiritual pressure, and his mask is a dead giveaway-- yet, no one has attacked him. There are no lieutenants present, no captains, and no seated officers trying to stop him. Quite obviously, there are standing orders to allow him to be here- he is our ally." The man had begun protesting, saying "But--" and was immediately cut off by Mitsuoki saying "If you have a problem with that, then you can confront the headcaptain alone." He replied "You don't have any issue with an arrancar being here!?" to which Mitsuoki said "My opinion is irrelevant. I do as I am told." "Yeah, but this-" "Let me rephrase that. If you act out of line, I will show you exactly why my standard post is a prison guard. I assure you, you will retract that 'useless' accusation from earlier." Mitsuoki's tone was still cold, even when delivering a threat. The fact that his tone wasn't openly hostile had added weight to the threat, and made the man hold his tongue.
Mitsuoki turned to the arrancar and said "I am Mitsuoki, a member of the Kido Corps. As an ally to the Soul Society, I welcome you to our home." His tone lacked any emotion to reinforce his words, but it was a far warmer welcome than the nibantai member had given, and was even accompanied by a respectful bow. "You said that you had some inconsistent information regarding our mission, allow me to get you up to speed. Members of Squad Twelve were monitoring happenings in the world of the living and noticed that they were getting a great deal of 'pings' from a specific location. Further inspection revealed the source to be a group of quincies, but that was all the data they could obtain on the matter."
Mitsuoki had paused and looked at the nibantai member for any corrections, but none were given. He looked back at Theoclese and said "This man's task is to go in and observe the quincies, take pictures, and process findings. My task is to open the senkaimon and operate some equipment developed by squad twelve that's supposed to analyze the reiatsu and reishi in the area. At the same time, I am tasked with assisting in combat should it be necessary. I would assume that you are to be our main combat aid, since you were the least informed and clearly the most armed. We are expected to do this without being seen, if possible. I would assume you are being compensated for your aid, so it would be prudent to abstain from initiating combat." The nibantai member looked to Mitsuoki and said "Let's just get this over with." before beginning to walk towards the senkaimon. Mitsuoki looked to Theoclese and said "Between the two of you, he makes me feel more uneasy based on first impressions." before following behind him.
So the stories about the Shinigami having inter-relational conflicts were true. Interesting. That could be useful at a later date, if need be. For the time being, the Arrancar stood silently, smoking his cigarette and enjoying the little show between the two whom he would be traveling with for this little...expedition. The amusement in Theocelese's golden eyes were obvious. This spat of drama didn't really involve him, his home, or his people...and so he yearned to just see how it all played out. Unfortunately...it didn't last too long. The initial Shinigami he'd spoken to was frank, emotionless, and to the point. Strange. Blod seemed so full of life, for the most part. Why was this one lacking in...anything but cold, hard facts? Maybe a drink later would loosen him up. That was another thing he was looking forward to--finding Kyoraku's preferred establishment for drinks and buying them all out to force the man to come to his quarters for a drink. Maybe it'd happen sooner than later. Who knew?
"You are correct in that I am allowed to be here." He put emphasis on the word 'allowed'. "Funny how that came to be, considering your technological division set up means to detect me and your Captain-Sorceress was all too quick to have words with me. Seemed as though your government would not have me being...allied with the wrong sort, or a loose cannon." Mitsuoki wasn't the only one here who could speak the truth in a cold manner. The Shinigami went about their ways completely wrong. Anyone worth their brain within the Gotei would have known that the Quincy attacked Las Noches and Hueco Mundo first. They exterminated people close to him. There was no way he would ever fight alongside them. Secondly, with as much respect as Theocelese could give Yamamoto, the man did the one thing all others attempted--and would ultimately fail to do. They tried to cage the Lion. They all wanted to control him. What he knew--what all others could not comprehend in his life, this current one, or in the birth-era of his soul, was that one should never look to contain him. Achilles. Theocelese. Kousta. Whatever name he went by, in whatever century, it didn't matter. All one needed to do was to unleash the man against whomever he'd marked for death. Regardless of his current, and loose ties to the Gotei, there was no doubt in anyone's mind as to who his true enemy was, and would continue to be until their existed not a single one of them left. Like a dead, ancient empire, they would be remembered in name only. And in no other way.
"You, young man, should watch your tongue." He said to the unnamed, nay-sayer. "You should always treat your guests with respect, as Sir Mitsuoki has demonstrated. Thank you for your hospitality, and when you see your Captain again, please tell her I thank her for allowing me the use of their home until I could meet with Yamamoto." There were no honorifics here, as far as addressing Captains went. As far as the Arrancar was concerned, they were his equals. He followed side by side with Mitsuoki, and kept his hands in his pockets, occasionally lifting one up to ash his cigarette. "The only compensation I am being given are quarters, access to the Soul Society, and whatever I choose to pilfer from the Quincy's skinless corpses." He failed to mention that skinning them would be a thing, if it came down to it...but that was neither here nor there.
"Not to be rude, but my accompanying you two means the chances of combat is high. This new threat, they are no pushover. Whatever your intelligences desire, they knew it best to send me to make sure the information is returned. Not to worry though, friend, I will make sure no harm comes to you. You are Kido Corp, and spells and magick are your specialty yes? Utilize them and keep me covered at a distance. That is how we will make short work of them." He said with a genuine and reassuring smile. Anyone who would greet him without open hostility would be, for all intents and purposes, a friend.
Mitsuoki had glanced to his side when Theoclese had finished talking and said "To be completely honest, I had assumed that you were here because the captain knows that I have certain issues with killing specific beings-- those not controlled by an overwhelmingly insatiable hunger being the ones that I refuse to kill. Injure, disable, or defeat-- yes. Kill... Never. It's a trait that very well may get me killed, one day." He paused for a few moments while looking forward to make sure they were still going in the right direction since the Seireitei could sometimes be an absolute maze. "Also, you seem to be slightly misinformed. The Kido Corps are the kido specialists of the soul society, yes; but, I am one of the weakest of them all in that area."
The nibantai member had turned around and began walking backwards. "So why the hell'r ya in the kido corps?" he asked. "I elect to not answer that question." Mitsuoki replied. "So, ya don't know why ya joined? Or were they the only ones who'd take in a failure of a soul reaper?" Mitsuoki had inhaled as though he planned to deliver a barrage of words, but had stopped and simply said "Neither. The reason is simply far too complex for someone who can't even comprehend the importance of looking forward." which was the exact moment that the nibantai member had turned around, just in time to smack into a wall. Mitsuoki continued walking past him, not even giving him the honor of being insulted for being a fool.
Turning the corner would reveal the absurdly large door with another member of the kido corps present with a set of hell butterflies gently fluttering over his head. Upon stopping in front him, he had looked at Theoclese and asked "Is he the extra member of your group, sir?" while looking at Mitsuoki. Mitsuoki had said "Yes, and never call me 'sir' again." in a cold, but respectful enough tone. "S-sorry, sir- I mean, Mitsuoki." Each butterfly gently hovered over to one of the members and the other kidoshu member had helped Mitsuoki in opening the gate. Mitsuoki had paused before entering and shot a glare towards the nibantai member. "Stay behind us." he said. The gaze was so hostile that the nibantai member felt unnerved, but his tone was so devoid of hatred that it just made the unnerving worse. Mitsuoki turned to Theoclese with a much less hostile stare, not hostile at all in fact, and said "I'll take care of any hollows that may show up. Anything else is your domain." He then proceeded to enter the precipice world with the nibantai member behind them.
And here Theocelese thought that the Arrancar bickered constantly with one another. What, with the ever-splintering factions and all, not to mention the situation with the Quincy. They were just an unneeded, volatile chemical added into the mix. No matter, they'd be eradicated in due time. He couldn't help a not-quite-so stifled laugh when his fellow "squadmate" backpedaled into the wall. It got his mind off the actually startling information Mitsuoki offered up freely. Maybe that was the true reason he was going on this mission. "You sound like a boy on his first date, unsure of how the world works when courting a gorgeous girl. You'll learn, in time, I hope." He offered the sharp comment, considering on asking just why the Shinigami only wanted to take on Hollow. That was part of the job, as far as Theocelese knew, what with needing to maintain the balance and all. "If it comes down to it, despite you declaring your weakness...I hope you have my back."
That was a thought that didn't quite sit well with him. The Gotei had actively waited for him, and sought out the Arrancar to aid in their most vulnerable hour...and now it was decided to pair the Arrancar up with a Shinigami who exclusively fought Hollow? Theocelese didn't need to worry about them. Most knew of him as it were, and there were an exclusively limited number of the creatures that would dare to lash out at him. For all intents and purposes, the Hollow wouldn't have even been a threat here. One smell of his scent, one hint of his Reiatsu, and they'd go running. While Theocelese was no longer in the trade of endless cannibalism, the tales of his fury spread far and wide. And when the time came for the Grecian to draw his blade and eliminate his target, the desert shook and the forest quivered in terror. All who were beneath him hid, as was there place. "You may address me as Theocelese, young man. Apologies for my rudness." He began, cycling to a fresh cigarette as they continued their journey together.
"Tell me of yourself. What do you do in your spare time?"
Theoclese had told Mitsuoki that even though he was weak, he hoped that the soul reaper would still be his ally and fight for him. It was a curious thing to state, but it was more than worthy of a response. It would be bad if Theoclese had expected Mitsuoki to stab him in the back, or leave him hanging. "I am weak, this I cannot deny. I am not a coward. I will never let my allies be killed, not again." he said while looking towards the world before him, his gaze narrowing with a mix of emotions. Anger was the first emotion on his face, mixed with sorrow and regret. It was momentary, though. He quickly wiped it off his face and returned to his former expression. Theoclese had finally given him a name, one that reminded Mitsuoki of the ones he'd read in books about long since dead people in a western land. Mitsuoki had said "Well met, Theoclese." in response.
Theoclese had asked him what he did with his spare time. It was an odd question since he was currently traveling with a member of the kido corps, on a task that was far from the kidoshu's line of work. "I detest 'spare time' as you would call it. It gives me far too much time to myself. When idle, I train. I devote my time to reading kido scrolls and learn all that I can and overcome my weakness, to become her equal. I take missions to this world, like this one, that allows me to hone my blade. I do all that I can to ensure that I do not have 'spare time' to utilize." If Theoclese would ask who the female he was referring to was, Mitsuoki would ignore it entirely and continue walking.
Mitsuoki had reached the other side of the senkaimon and the door opened with the three butterflies leaving them, the nibantai member staying quiet behind them for the duration. When they left and entered the beginning of a forest, the man spoke up saying "If we're gonna be workin together, we should probably know each other's abilities. My zanpakuto's name is Hi Kuro, Black Fire. It's a fire zanpakuto that lets me control nearby flames and blow up anyone I cut." Mitsuoki had raised an eyebrow since it was actually a fairly interesting zanpakuto. It also seemed that the man was trying to be nicer, likely realizing that being inhospitable was inadvisable beyond that point. "My zanpakuto is chaotic and impossible to adapt to." he said, not bothering to give its name or go into detail as to why it was impossible to adapt to.
Theocelese had thought Mitsuoki referred to his Captain, and did not question the 'her' further. He found the man's personality interesting. He'd used whatever free time was available to train and overcome his faults, yet he detested the dispatching of any creature beyond a Hollow? How...humbling in a way. Even more confusing! The other Shinigami mentioned the importance of cohesion, and began to explain what his Zanpakutou's capabilities were. Even more interesting...maybe at a later date, him and this man could clash blades. Of one of the things Theocelese wished to do the most, it was to combat as many Shinigami as possible. Nothing lethal, of course, but he needed to test the meddle of those he'd be fighting with. He already knew his centuries of Arrancar were up to snuff...then again, these were people he'd already seen much conflict with. They were not his blood, but he did consider them nothing short of his family.
"I find that impossible, Mitsuoki. Everything can be adapted to, and if you're a keen mind, you can overcome any situation. I would encourage you to think outside whatever box you keep yourself in. You are capable of so much more than you think." The Arrancar hoped the words were more endearing than how they sounded, but he gave the Shinigami a genuinely reassuring smile. "I also seek audience with the both of you when this mission is done with. I will not try to sugar coat this...but part of my being here isn't to be a commanding presence against the Quincy. You both seem like good men, and I would wish to not hold mourning ceremonies for either of you. Spar with me sometime when we our work is finished. I've taught Shinigami before, if it is any reassurance."
Theoclese had told Mitsuoki that everything can be adapted to and advised him to begin thinking outside of the norm. He offered uplifting words that Mitsuoki had taken as nothing more or less than what they were intended to be. They hadn't made it much further before he had told them that he also wanted to meet with them after the mission, and even spar with them. Sparring was important to developing one's sword skills. Having different partners introduced them to different styles of fighting, even if one's partner had trained under the same master. However, Mitsu had refused to spar with anyone ever since his original sparring partners had been made unable to spar with him. Ever since then, the only sparring partner he's had, has been the many hollows he fought.
Mitsuoki's response was "You have my gratitude for your kind words, and invitation to spar. I must, however, decline your offer. I have other duties to attend to after this mission." The nibantai member had a vastly different reply, he said "Ha! Hell yeah I'll spar with ya! I ain't got nothin' to do after this." with a tone that implied he actually looked forward to it.
A bit of walking later and Mitsuoki had said "Theoclese, I have noticed that you carry multiple arms on your person. If I may ask, are all of them your zanpakuto?" If Theoclese had answered, saying that they weren't all his zanpakuto, Mitsuoki would ask where he got them made, commenting that they looked rather high quality.
"I am operating out of the same division as you, so we should get acquainted with one another better." Theocelese said to the Nibantai member. It was somewhat of a shock to see how quick the Shinigami was to...warming up to him. Then again, Theocelese knew first hand what kind of bonding happened when two fighters knocked each other around a little bit. In this moment, Theocelese was determined to do everything he could to try and keep the Nibantai member safe from harm, should the worst happen. Mitsuoki's response, however, was something he expected. Normally, he would have shrugged at the decline...but something was pulling him to keep at it. Mitsuoki's continual beat down on himself was a sad affair, to be sure. The Arrancar felt the young man was capable of so much, he just needed a better outlook on things. He was like a...a poorly starched shirt, or a piece of dry toast. So cut and dry.
"Three Zanpakuto?" Theocelese asked, a brow raising. He knew some people were not limited to 'just a sword', no matter whatever god or gods actually wrote the script of the damn world they lived in. "I tell you what...do me this favor, set aside your duties for just one afternoon. We'll go to the Rukongai, find a good place to eat to build our strength, and give me one sparring session. Make this promise to me...and I'll let you know which one holds the truth of my being. Who knows, I might even feel inclined to let you know a little bit about it." Theocelese said this with a smile, a single hand raising to give Mitsuoki a good natured slap on the back. A hearty laugh followed this, as he made the immediate assumption that the Kido Corp member wasn't going to have a good chuckle from having that done to him.
Theoclese had questioned Mitsuoki's inquiry about his weapons, acting as though having three zanpakuto was completely inprobable. Perhaps for Theoclese it was, but, for Mitsuoki, there was a non-zero percent chance of it happening. He had come across an arrancar who allies himself with Soul Reapers. He had heard tales of humans invading the Gotei and taking down multiple captains. The same tales included a Quincy that had allied himself with a Soul Reaper... a substitute soul reaper, a human adolescent who had less training than almost every soul reaper in all of Seireitei. Of course, they were tales and none of them he had experienced for himself; so, he didn't fully believe them. But, if all of those things were true, then the odds of an arrancar or a soul reaper having three zanpakuto were fairly decent.
Theoclese had then requested something that made Mitsuoki stop walking and look at him with an expression that was halfways between calling the arrancar insane and calling him an absolute moron. He didn't say anything, his expression said it all for him. His eye twitched at the thought of putting aside his duties for something so silly as sparring. The sound of wood snapping had made Mitsuoki's expression return to normal while also turning his attention in its direction. The nibantai member was hiding behind a tree while peeking around it. He looked back to the soul reaper and arrancar and said "Quincy, just one. Looks like he's on patrol." Mitsuoki hid behind a tree as well to avoid being seen. It was common for Quincies to have a flare-type ability, so he didn't want to be seen until it was time. "Alright, so who wants to take this one?" he asked while looking at Mitsuoki, as though he would be willing to fight a Quincy. Mitsuoki had commented "A corpse is evidence that we were here. Theoclese, do you know how to use Bala?" It was a dumb question, of course he knew, he was a high ranking arrancar. Of course, Mitsuoki didn't know how high his rank was, so it was possible that he didn't know at all.
Assuming that Theoclese told him that he could, Mitsuoki would say "Do you think you could aim for his head and reduce the power just enough to knock him unconscious? I can use kido to negate the sound of the impact." It was a suggestion, but, if Theoclese would rather just kill the Quincy then Mitsuoki wouldn't try to stop him or even scold him for it. By this point, the Quincy was already looking around and looked to be a little bit on edge. He knew something was off, and was clearing sensing a nearby spiritual pressure.
The look Theocelese gave Mitsuoki back was one of an incredulity. Could the guy really not take a single day off? He didn't know anything about the division that the man served in, save for it seemed like it was one dedicated to the art of sorcerery. Something didn't sit right with this, even Theocelese, one of the few of his kind who took the study and practice of war to such an extent, a section of Las Noches' library was dedicated to every book on warefare ever written since mankind started to keep records of that kind, took days off to relax. Sometimes he cleaned. Sometimes he prepped meals. Other times, he'd sit around and do nothing at all or watch movies. This situation was rather puzzling, and thankfully the announcement of a lone patrolman scuttling around broke them from the staring contest. Theocelese hid with his Shinigami comrades, ducking and crouching low. This didn't sit right with him. He didn't feel the presence of any others.
"Of course I do..." He whispered, eyes scanning the area and looking for other signs of disturbance in the area. They may have had some kind of technology to completely hide their presence. After all, the realm in which they consorted was one still yet to be found. Theocelese would have, under completely normal circumstances, appeared before the patrolling Quincy and quickly turned his head all the way around. Mitsuoki did have a good suggestion, and he would have immediately gone with it...but again...this didn't sit right with him.
"We may be looking at an ambush. The Wandenreich are not stupid, even with their lesser brethren. Unless they're operating on a skeleton crew, there is no reason for a single soldier to be on patrol duty. You usually want a small squad of pairs with short numbers, or double that if manpower allows for it. Do you have some kind of...sensory spell, or a way to alter your sights before we do this?" No doubt, there wasn't time for continuous bantering back and forth.
There was wisdom in Theocles' warning that they could be moving into an ambush. It would make sense to have more than one person in an area, and Mitsuoki did have a way of finding out exactly how many were nearby. He didn't want to showcase his abilities if he didn't have to, but it would seem that he was obligated to do so on account of their targets being more intelligent than the common squirrel. "Please allot me a brief moment." Mitsuoki said and began increasing his spiritual pressure. Mitsuoki's spiritual pressure's "feel" reflected his innermost emotions, which at the moment, were completely nonexistent. While it was inconvenient that he would have to use his sensing power so soon, he was expecting to have used it at some point, so it wasn't annoying. This means that his spiritual pressure felt like little more than a light breeze that was common this time of year. "There are two others present. One is hiding in the tree above that man, and the other is exactly four meters away from them, looking in this direction, with a bow formed. It would seem that they are suspicious, but have not fully decided on whether or not we are present."
Mitsuoki would give a few moments for the nibantai member and Theoclese to take in the information before saying "I am able to incapacitate the one that is farthest from us. How do you wish to handle this situation, Theoclese?" While stealth was an option, Mitsuoki wouldn't give the arrancar and heat for choosing the use a more 'hands on' approach.
