Two hours. That's how far she drove out of town and into areas seemingly devoid of human life. Hill upon rolling green hill passed as Tanya took a turn, off the main rout and out into one of the many empty fields. Ten minutes of obscenely bumpy terrain later, Tanya parked the Pagoda. They were now far enough from the main road now that anyone passing by would be unable to see her, Sasha, or the Pagoda.
"Alright, we're here." Tanya stepped out of the car. Pulling their gear out, she set it down in front of the car. Blankets and a cooler filled with Sasha's cooking. They'd be out here for a little while. Sasha wouldn't know how long and Tanya wouldn't tell her. That was part of the mystery of this training. Today she'd teach Sasha the ins and outs of knowing what the opponent might throw at her. But knowing and being able to react to it were two completely different things.
"Where the arrows land will be our perimeter." Tanya instructed Sasha before taking the cross off her neck and manifesting her bow. Once Sasha was paying attention she drew the Reishi string, forming an arrow and letting it loose. Once, twice, three, four arrows spiraled out at cero speed to four equidistant positions in front of the car. The resulting demonstration formed a large square roughly seventy five meters on each side. "Training will begin once you enter the square. Any questions you have must be asked before we start." Her tone was blunt and firm but laced with a hint of friendly. Tanya's training would be harsh but it would be a good teacher for the girl. Perseverance through suffering breeds results. It was something Tanya had had to learn the hard way.
Odd places, insecure buildings, dark alleyways; These were just some places Sasha frequented during her ventures. Uncovering the truth behind urban legends became more than a hobby, it was now part of her. Most cases were either inconclusive or false, however, some truth existed behind rumors to begin with. During her cases, as she called them, Sasha picked up various tricks but most needed refining. Thus far Sasha's methods involved mostly salt and herbs. For some reason certain scents, or whatever mystical properties they held, drove weaker spirits away. But for people with power like Tanya, and stronger spirits, Sasha could only avoid them.
"What are we doing?"
Deadpan expression, eyes half closed while glaring at Tanya almost moppingly. An open field far away from civilization wasn't an ideal place for training, not as far as Sasha could grasp. Could they be out here for meditation? The ring she approached reminded of her wrestling, just much larger in comparison. She tried viewing one arrow in the far distance but couldn't see it. Standing at the edge of the -barrier- she turned to Tanya and began typing.
"Is this a perfect square?"
What kind of person taught her how to shoot!? That's when she stuck one arm into the -barrier- and waved it. Nothing happened. Was something suppose to happen? That's when she took a single step inside.

"Training." Tanya stated bluntly. Maybe too bluntly. "And yes it should be a perfect square, give or take the variations in the slope of the land itself. You need not worry, there is no actual barrier. The arrows I fired serve only as markers for the training area and will remain until our training here is finished." Tanya explained, subtly leaving out the details of what would happen should Sasha choose to exit the arena in the midst of training.
Once Sasha stepped into the ring Tanya continued with an explanation "I'll explain it simply. This is the ring. No matter what happens you are not permitted to leave the ring, should you choose to do so there will be consequences. Your goal is simply to avoid my attacks to the best of your ability." With the explanation Tanya expected Sasha would want to back out. Obviously getting shot at wasn't something normal people would consider training. To reassure the girl, Tanya held up her bow at an angle, measuring its trajectory before firing off the weakest possible arrow she could manage. The arrow ascended at cero speed but reduced to the speed of a regular falling arrow by the time it hit the ground. "Should you get hit by an arrow..." Tanya trailed off, allowing Sasha to examine the impact point of the arrow she'd fired. Once Sasha had been given sufficient time to examine the impact point, Tanya raised her bow again. This time firing off five arrows at once aimed in the same arcing fashion. Each arrow, would strike the girl should she make no attempt to move.
Cruel monsters, unforgiving world. Lingering spirits hungered for attention and revenge, seeking out others who possessed spiritual sight. Companionship or enmity, each spirit was different. For those without, much the same could be said. Personal experience and research gave Sasha insight, questioning how and why they functioned but, also, how she might use her knowledge either for or against them. Constructing devices and spells against them often ended in failure, Sasha having no true teacher before now. Tanya's first lesson, however, wasn't something expected. Like a time when trapped inside an old house, today's exorcize dealt with dodging.
Without a quiver filled with arrows how was Tanya to shoot? How was something she didn't understand. Lips parted and eyes flickered down when an arrow suddenly began forming once again. Captivated like a deer in headlights, Sasha's left thumb twitched and forearm came to chest height. But, to Sasha's wonder she once again released an arrow skyward. The speed far quicker than anything she'd seen before, her eyes didn't even see the arrow leave. How heavy was the draw on that bow, how strong was Sasha to pull it? When it stuck into the ground Sasha fell onto her rump. Her face wasn't one of shock, but worry and surprise. Then, Tanya released another arrow.
Never before seeing such speeds Sasha couldn't react. She tried scooting back, two arrows having nicked her leg and thigh. Eyes shut tightly as she rolled in pain, pulling her right leg up to her chest and arms around. The regal face grimaced, teeth clinching tightly. Her eyes barely opened to see Tanya's cold expression, and a chill washed over her. The grass beneath her feet, the wind blowing, Sasha wasn't focused on anything except Tanya. She wasn't playing. Sasha forced herself up, foot sliding on grass, and tumbling onto her knee scraping but got back up and started running.
Post by Tanya Wyrdhaven on Aug 31, 2018 1:31:55 GMT
Tanya watched Sasha fall and grimaced. Perhaps five shots had been a bit much for her to start Sasha's training off with. She'd never had a need to hold back her power before. Sasha would be training to keep herself from getting pummeled, Tanya would need to focus in order to avoid making any shots that might seriously harm the girl. In some sense they were both training.
Tanya let out a shallow breath, Sasha ran. She'd tone it down a bit, at least until Sasha got a handle on the training and the situation it put her into. The girl had potential, but until she could properly tap into that power there'd be no way for her to defend herself against attacks like this.
Tanya observed Sasha's movements closely, frowning. They weren't the erratic movements of someone who was trying to avoid getting hit. No they were far too predictable for that at this stage. To avoid calculated attacks required a focus and prestige that this girl currently lacked.
Gauging the child's movement Tanya let loose two arrows into the air. Their positions predetermined. Should the girl choose to keep running straight they would strike immediately in front of and behind her chosen path, intentionally missing. A subtle warning to the girl that her movements were being far too predictable.
Frantic movements without true direction, shapeless liquid that didn’t conture. To adapt meant surviving yeet emotions ran high. Proper calculations, observational analysis clouded by muddled, fear driven thoughts. Electrical synapses fired wildly with mind forgoing what was truly happening. Humans feared what they didn’t understand. Often barking and lashing out until either they, or it, was strapped to a table and probed. However, when Humans couldn’t view, let alone grasp, was running was the only option? She immediately halted upon feeling something brush against her chest from inside; A sharp drop like guilt or losing someone dear. Muscles tensed with joints locking, Sasha coming to a sliding stop as the arrow nearly hit her. Had Tanya’s trajectory been off?
Mouth agasp and upper body bent backwards. Forearms shook uncontrollably. An icy bolt, sharp dagger like wind shook her being. Churning stomach and collapsing body, held up only by knees clashing together. She didn’t need to turn around to know that another arrow nearly struck her. The fear froze Sasha’s body. She couldn’t tell if she was breathing or thinking, only that a chill air came from her nostrils. Head turned towards Tanya. Like this, Sasha would die. Tanya could’ve killed her at any time she wanted. The absence of flowing thought, incapable of movement. Death was scary and there was no point in trying to try when she couldn’t do anything. Like those chains that bound her years ago, but now Sasha was being held back by her own fear. Sasha hadn’t changed at all. She was still just a kid.
....
A simple cool breath inside her mind. Thought wouldn’t form into words but air brushed, causing a jerk in her right ribcage and to twitch her body. This amount of fear hadn’t been felt since years ago, a fear she had felt once before. And like a damn that was giving way, her purple eyes glowed for a moment as spiritual power spiked into her body, snapping her back to her situation. She took a step back and grit her teeth. Despite still shaking she was now focused on Tanya but hadn’t yet realized she was now focused. Nor had she realized her faint spike in spiritual pressure like back in the Kareoke bar. Though it was less focused than that time it was there.

Good. The child was struggling, fearing. Focusing. Now to see if she could contend with this training and overcome it. Tanya observed Sasha's reactions carefully. Had the girl known she'd missed intentionally? Their real training hadn't even begun...
With her next shot, Tanya would dispel in this girl, any doubts she might have about a Qunicy's ability to hit her target. Raising her bow, Tanya aimed, though not in the upward arcing fashion she had before. Reishi built up and the arrow launched, fast as a cero. Passing a mere inch away from Sasha's left cheek before exploding on the hilly ground behind her. Dirt, grass, and stones ripped away at the point of impact leaving behind a large crater in its wake. A shot that would have likely ripped a gaping hole in the girl had Tanya misjudged her aim.
"Prepare yourself! One of these next shots will not miss." Tanya warned, drawing back her bow again. Focusing, Tanya returned to her previous state of firing minuscule arrows. Her intention was to let the girl know what she was up against, not skewer her... Tanya might be an ally and assure the girl's safety but enemies in Sasha's future would not share the same kindness.
Returning her bow to an arced position, Tanya let lose a single arrow followed a fraction of a second later by five more arrows laid out in even spreading.
Death continued glaring down with remorse. At any moment fingers could discharge an imposing blue streak; A silent thunderbolt whose only crack was swishing wind. The Human eye only processed so many frames per second, and Tanya’s arrows moved in between frames. Fingers parted from the drawstring freeing Tanya’s arrow. Speed and power were beyond standard comprehension. Nothing short of a land mine in power when colliding against soil. Having known spiritual arts and magical spells Sasha still couldn’t understand how such things were possible, but they were. Her Human senses struggled against what they had seen Tanya perform, but her spiritual senses were fully aware what was real.
The mind caused vision to recede, blanketing out what shouldn’t be. In an attempt to protect the body, or the mind itself, the mind can willfully break. Tired and heavy eyes, unable to for words into thoughts her head arose as the barrage of arrows went up. The sun hurt her eyes, causing Sasha to close one eye and use a hand to block out the blinding light. Taking backward steps an arrow struck her shoulder, slicing flesh from meat. Blood spattered the ground and felt a large thump of her heart. Another arrow stuck into her bicep. She dropped to the ground and rolled dodging the other three.

"Keh-" Tanya cringed, biting her lip. This was for the child's own good. She had to keep reminding herself of that fact. If she couldn't learn anything from this training here and now then she may as well be dead already. It would take but one instance of a hollow attack for everything to be all over. The thought sickened her. Hollows sickened her. They were a force that bled into this world in a fit of feeding frenzy and the Shinigami sworn to protect it were constantly failing on a massive scale.
No... her emotions shouldn't compete with the moment. Tanya breathed. Thus far her attacks had neither been consistent nor aimed to dish out any real harm to Sasha. At worst she'd probably need bandaging up after today's training.
"Don't try to see the arrows! Feel them! React to them!" Tanya shouted to Sasha, giving her only a single moment to recover herself.
Raising her bow again Tanya set loose six more arrows into the air. In patterned fashion the bolts of blue energy streamed into the sky, arcing, falling. Each arrow threatening to strike the girl struggling below. The arrows would strike again, each aimed to hit. At a sixty percent successful avoidance rate Sasha might not last more than a few more volleys... Tanya buried the thought. This was no time for sentiments and worries. Reality was a cruel teacher but it would be a teacher all the same.
The arrows lacked power and speed, being equivalent to normal arrows used by Humans, by time they made contact with Sasha. Her body got stronger when focusing heavily in her spirit but that alone took Sasha being still and force it to come out, like moving a sleeping limb. With neither time nor emotional stability survival seemed hopeless. To concoct a plan based around observational analysis now might give Sasha a chance, but how could she in this situation? A flurry of negative thoughts: What if, Why, How; Tried forming yet they were unnecessary, yet were suppressed by an unknown factor Sasha didn’t understand.
The arrow in her arm grasped, it felt warm but solid. A form of energy given corporeal form, or something like that. Face twist, shoulder rising with tightening muscles as she writhed from burning and freezing pain assaulting her as the arrow was pulled out. The energy arrow held in her hand was foreign. Sweaty palms let it go and covered her wound. She glanced to it and back to Tanya as she stood. It didn’t go all the way through. Her whole body was shaking. Her chest felt tighter and tighter. The idea of moving didn’t cross her mind, she just knew she had to else she’d be hit when Tanya decided to fire again.
Sasha rolled, lept, ran and slid to dodge three arrows. Two hit her in the back, causing her to tumble. But Tanya shot off a sixth for the first time, Sasha watched as it was let loose. Her head rose and as it was coming down on the kneeling Sasha she leaned to the side and it missed her.
....
Once again a breath passed in her mind. Her eyes latched on a distant thought past the arrow, and turned her gaze towards Tanya. A gaze of pain, confusion, but also defiance. She hadn’t lost yet.

Good good, The girl was gradually getting it. Though taking two shots to the back felt harsh, even Tanya could almost feel it as the arrows struck. She'd dodged an additional arrow however. Tanya would need to step up the game again it would seem. She'd ordered the child to dodge these arrows but still she didn't see the results she was looking for.
For now the girl seemed to be focused on her. The defiance in her eyes was a welcome change but she would soon throw her into disillusionment. Perhaps she'd been able to judge and dodge based on her current position. Or so Tanya thought but then again all of Sasha's effort up until now could possibly just be written off as luck at this point. She would test if that were the case.
This would be the first time Tanya would show off the fruits of her own training to anyone other than her Quincy brethren... Catching Sasha's eyes, Tanya smiled raised her bow in the same arcing style, releasing yet six more arrows into the sky. Then she vanished with a step of Hirenkyaku, moving into one of Sasha's blind spots on the other side of the arena. There she released five more arrows to follow the first set of six. Eleven arrows at once. She left it up to Sasha to notice the second volley.
Nervousness didn’t fade away, limbs still shook, and breakfast might come out one end or another. Attention locked, fingers lips and jaw quivered but not from fear. Ice covered thoughts, frost covering the cogwheels of her mind had shattered. Anticipation. Volly released, she still couldn’t make out the initial speed. Such vibrancy, given Sasha could look above she might could read their movements, however, the sun was an issue and their blue color blended modestly well with the sky. Eyes still looked up watching as they arched. Now like falling stars, mere dots that could easily pierce flesh were a like a reflection out of the past. Though the positioning was different there was nestalgia in the falling lights.
Widened, low, posture rose with feet sliding inward. Sasha’s straightening back ached as movement forced the arrows from her back. Shoulders shook as tendons tried cramping, signaling for Sasha to stop changing positions. A proper fencing stance was taken up, however, the difference was her right hand still covered the wound on her left arm. Within a single inhale her body hardly trembled and her stanced completed. In the corner of her eye Tanya vanished but she didn’t have time to know where she went or what happened. Nearly like a ballerina she pivoted in place, and hop backwards; moving where the arrows fell around her. Three made contact, cutting into her skin but no deeper than paper cuts. Yet more was right behind.
A brief image of how her life would end, the piercing of her chest. Mouth agape, an another vision occurred simultaneously. As though viewing her body from above, an outside body experience, she felt the presence of the arrows as though they were piercing raindrops. Body slid between the arrows stuck in ground and once again slipped through the arrows, them falling around her body like before. Now standing in the midsts of the arrows Sasha’s beating heart felt as though it’d rupture, however, an intense gaze locked onto Tanya like a hot clump of iron in the process of being tempered.

A wide smile crossed Tanya's face. This was it! Even if Sasha had those physical disabilities of hers, they need not hinder her capacity for mobility. Now things would be put to the test. Near misses were still hits in this training session after all. Tanya raised her bow again. Maybe using abilities against her trainee this early on in the child's teachings was a bit much but the Quincy very much wanted to see what Sasha was capable of in the face of diversity.
She thought about potentially alerting the girl this time as well, but thought better of it. Better for Sasha to experience things first hand rather than be given a helping tip. Tanya released into the air eight arrows of concentrated energy this time spread out in equidistant fashion, similar to the previous volleys. Unlike the previous volleys however, Tanya launched a second volley. Only four arrows but to a trained eye their spiritual signature was clearly different than what she'd been using up to this point. Controlling power to it's minimum, reducing velocity to not much more than a regular arrow. If she were honest with herself, this level of restraint was becoming taxing. But if it were for a few more rounds she could manage...
Though equal in power to her other shots, Sasha would be undeniably pinned if she failed to dodge even one of the four latter arrows...
The last four arrows fired are from Rain of Arrows:
"By launching 1/4th the normal amount of arrows, Tanya is able to infuse her regular shots with reishi capable of pinning anything they strike to the surrounding terrain. Though not particularly damaging, only dishing out tier I offensive damage, the arrows will seek to stop or hinder the target's movement as a tier III bind."
A bow with seventy pounds on draw would release an arrow around 340 ft./s, but Tanya’s went far beyond. Only during the arching did their speed lower, granting insight into Tanya’s shots. A swordsman protecting herself against arrows should possess a shield, yet Sasha didn’t even have a blade. Only by examining running and dodging would Sasha survive. At any moment her heart felt though it might explode but began running anyway.
Eyes finally began adjusting to both sunlight and arrow speed. But paying attention to Tanya, who could move far quicker and fire another volly, and the arrows was a great task. She would tumble, roll, and hop up. The second volly too was dodged, however, it pierced her clothing barely and pinned her clothing to the ground and her along with. Her cheek twitching in annoyance, she patted the ground tapping out for this round. Enough had been enough. Even if they ended up eating linch Sasha may not keep it down. There was also the matter if Tanya would heed the tap out. If not, she would be in for trouble. More than she bargained for but didn’t regret it.

"I suppose this is her current limit..." Tanya huffed a sigh. She'd already prepared to fire off another volley if Sasha managed to avoid it but the arrows caught and, based on the child's actions, Sasha seemed unwilling to continue.
Lowering her bow, Tanya released it's energy, returning into the trinket she wore around her neck. With it the arrows marking the barrier as well as those holding Sasha tethered to the ground also vanished, releasing the girl to her own faculties. Returning to the car, Tanya pulled out a first-aid kit she'd prepared earlier that morning before they'd packed up and departed for training.
"You're quite lucky. My first real training left me covered in bandages and bedridden for a week straight afterward..." A slightly jealous smirk crossed Tanya's face as she plucked up a bottle of water from the cooler and walked out to Sasha with the first-aid supplies. Kneeling beside Sasha, she set down the kit and offered the bottle to the girl. "We're not done yet, but I think you deserve a break, at least for right now."
It would be tough, this was something she hoped Sasha could understand even with this level of physical stress. Maybe this power training wasn't the most fair way to help the girl get stronger but then, reality never was fair. The weak who chose to remain so would eventually die as weaklings. At least if Sasha got stronger she could stand a fighting chance. "Let's get you bandaged up and then we can have some lunch if you're up for it?" Tanya suggested beginning by pulling out and opening up some of the packages from the kit.
Timber crackles, bodies charred. The horrific, detestable, scent remained an unhealed scar. Mental tissue layered over time and again, kept together by once warm memories. Reality's harsh truths, and twisted lies, tried contorting Sasha's heart. Already both her vocal cords and hands were tarnished by a cruel twist of fate. Her religious faith faltered, body tumbling like a zombified corpse, and lifeless emotions. Hatred burned deep for those that hurt her, a flood of tears for her parents out of sadness, and tears for fear of being touched by others. To this day she only continued by welding together the fragments of herself with sulfur and salt.
For any number of reasons, Sasha didn't cry despite having her body assaulted by burning wounds. Adrenaline remained flowing in her nervous system and blood. Electrical synapses rapidly firing across aching body, Sasha nearly forgetting her own physical limitations of her accursed wounds upon her hands. Sasha unzipped her sweat shirt, placing it aside. An inaudible sigh passed from her lips and slumping shoulders. It was a favorite of hers. Underneath was a plain white shirt, stained red with the wounds on her back. While taking off her shirt she noticed falling fabric underneath. Yet something else she'd need to replace too, her bra was destroyed. This didn't matter much, being still in her developing stages of life.
The phone in her sweat shirt pocket was undamaged, but nicked with a deep scratch. She glared at Tanya. A deadpan expression once again with judging eyes. Irritated, sad, but comical. She did this while covering her chest with one arm, showing Tanya. The expensive black casing could take an arrow shot. Well, not directly, but it was something worth noting for later on.
"Is it physically possible to barf up your own heart?'
Post by Tanya Wyrdhaven on Sept 3, 2018 3:52:39 GMT
"You know... it might have been a good idea to remove anything you wanted to keep in good repair..." Tanya noted, seeing Sasha's glare in light of the girl's damaged clothing and shrugging. She was glad to see that her phone was in tact. Having that destroyed would have hindered their communication to a degree. "Next time you go shopping for clothes just let me know, I'll replace what was damaged in today's training." She spread a bandage over one of Sasha's wounds offering to replace but not apologizing for damaging the girl's property. She'd told Sasha they were going training so being prepared with a cheap set of clothes should have been obvious to the girl. At least Tanya would make sure in the future to have Sasha set aside her phone before starting their training sessions.
Pulling open another bandage, Tanya disinfected another wound and placed the bandage over it. Sasha didn't seem to have sustained any serious injuries, though the ones on her back looked rather nasty. Tanya frowned as she looked at those wounds, reaching a hand to carefully trace the injuries. Had she failed in controlling the amount of Reishi she'd released into a minuscule state? "Sorry... It looks like I may have overdone it a little..." She uttered apologetically, disinfecting the cuts on her back and applying bandages to them as well.
Sasha's clothes all contained a high thread count. When picking out clothing that was just one factor, among a few, she considered. Possessing both dark and light themed clothing, favoring darker shades, Sasha looked into simple designs over frills and embeddings. Ones style only partly portrayed how they carried themselves and should be seen. Although Sasha could analyze people psychology based on their attire, Sasha preferred a mix of style comfort and usability. That's why she wore militaristic styled boots, durable but flexible. Tanya's remark about her clothes bore truth, but things like this is what Sasha always wore when investigating spiritual cases.
Allowing Tanya to buy her clothing wouldn't work. Sasha already owed Tanya so much. Not only had Tanya proved Sasha wasn't crazy but also fixed her moped, and now training. Life wasn't easy for either of them despite making it seem as though they were normal people. Sasha with dreams of being a chef and Tanya a mechanic, but how easily that was both a facade and truth at the same time. Duel lives, both with lies, and truths mixed in. Sasha winced as disinfectant stung, but tried staying still. Tanya was prepared and that was good. Sasha thought those were incenses or other things before the trip began.
Sasha moved her fingers while keeping arm in place. Dextrose with fingers, she typed and cut on the voice function of her phone.

"Are you enjoying this? Guess I was worried for nothing then." Tanya gave Sasha a grin and partly enthusiastic laugh, pulling open another bandage and applying it to the last of Sasha's current wounds. She could have sworn the girl was having the worst time of her life out in this field while she'd been standing safe and sound on the sidelines pummeling her with dangerous arrows. "You didn't do too badly for your first time dodging my shots." Tanya complimented, offering a hand to help Sasha to her feet. "We're probably done with arrows for today but don't expect it to get any easier. The most you had to deal with today was only about twenty percent of what I can fire off all at once. We'll continue this training until you can do just as well at full volley." She smiled, winking devilishly.
"If you're up for it, we'll have lunch and continue with some additional training before heading back for the day. Dodging attacks isn't the only thing there is to surviving a fight after all." Returning the empty bandage packs to the first aid kit, Tanya picked it up and started back towards the car. It may have been more physically taxing for Sasha's experience but Tanya could feel her own efforts. Holding back her own base strength with those shots had been quite harsh. She was ready for a bit of a break to allow some resting before they continued their training.
Sasha's clothes all contaiWith wounds freshly patched, Sasha could now move but not much. The wrong movement would undo Tanya's work and, while she didn't want to upset Tanya for some odd reason but, be forced to redo the coverings. Today's wounds marked a new time in Sasha's life she hoped, even dreamed, for. Intense pain wasn't expected but, rather, starting off with something more simple. Tanya shoved those thoughts aside awhile ago, Sasha still sore about that, however, the unexpected should be expected in their line of work. Sasha nodded at the mention they were through with dodging arrows for today. Maybe they could pick up meditation or something like that.
"Recalling what happened is difficult."
Recalling what happened during her training was difficult. Her mind settled on relaxing, choosing to shift thoughts away from what happened and would come back later. This was her first real experience against someone else.
"A blur. Boxers do not recall how many times they were hit, or when."
Sasha was aware she wasn't going to recall everything. But, for now at least, she wanted to relax and enjoy eating lunch. For some reason she was feeling more hungry than usual. Including her stomach growling, causing Sasha's eyes to widen and cheeks to redden from embarrassment.
