The meeting was done and over with. All three parties said what they needed to say, and at the end of it all, Theocelese wasn't sure what was to come of the future. Hell, he didn't even know what was to come of himself. With so much laid down on the line now, not in terms of the Gotei Thirteen, nor Las Noches or even the Quincy, but for matters that related to directly the Arrancar, and himself only, he had to do what any person in his position would have done. The recent problems within his own mind added to the equation, and every waking moment was just another cause for alarm. What would make his blood boil next? Would it be some off-handed comment, or threats of physical violence? That was why he knew he needed to have this conversation now.
"Emilia." Theocelese said, after finally catching up to her.
He knew what was coming, and mentally braced himself the best he could for it. It'd be a screaming match, hopefully a one-sided one, here shortly. His hands came together, bringing out a cigarette and a lighter. The rush of nicotine would help keep his nerves calm, despite the hairs on the back of his neck already set to a razor's edge.
It hadn't gone exactly the way she had planned, and not all of her demands had been met, but that mattered little. In the end, she would get what she wanted, even if it took a little bit longer. Now, though? She had to deal with the annoying stares from all the random Shinigami she encountered. It was no secret that they were recruiting those outside their norm, and she, among others, were definitely lumped in to that category. The looks didn't bother her in the sense that they offended her, or she cared about their opinions. They were just... annoying. And now she wasn't even allowed to kill them. Sighing, she ran her hand through her hair, letting it messily fall back. Why had she agreed to this then? To be honest, she had been trying to piss them off so she could reject their offers without thinking of the consequences.
Not theirs, they were of little concern, more so about fighting the entire Wandenreich on her own. It would have been a little more difficult. Not that she minded a challenge, really. It just wasn't worth the hassle. So she told herself.
A voice suddenly broke her from her thoughts. One that immediately brought fury to the surface. This was a conversation she had been wanting to have since she had found out about his little... adventure. It took everything she had not to chew him out in the meeting. "YOU." She whirled on him, fire in her eyes. He was MUCH taller than her, but she stretched up to her full height, standing on tip toes to shove her face nearly in to his.
"What were you thinking?!" She had recited this a hundred times in her head, and now that she had finally gotten the chance to speak, blind rage made her forget her words. "You left Olympus for the Gotei? The people you led me to believe that you HATED? And you did so without even talking to me first?!" She jabbed a finger in his chest. She didn't care who heard, who stopped and stared. "You left.." She retreated to her own height now, falling back to the flats of her feet. "And you didn't even say anything. Just like father." She had quieted slightly.
She couldn't direct her rage at his actions, because she stood amongst the Gotei herself. But she felt... abandoned. To just up and leave without a word. If it was personal, fine, but he could have at least said something, instead she had to learn of it from Sui Feng. Of all people.
The outrage was expected, and in turn, Theocelese pulled deeply from his cigarette. One would expect narrowed brows to form on the Arrancar's face...but that did not come to pass. Rather, he stood there and he waited, finding himself taken slightly aback at the shortness of what was said to him and how those final words came out so...quietly. The silence in the following moments were thick, like the air around them were choked in smog. His eyes searched Emilia's, waiting, hoping the anger was only in temporary recess. The smoke slowly billowed out of both nostrils, and he flicked the cigarette off to the side, not caring about whoever had to clean it up at the moment. The rest came out in a rush, rather than whirling wisps at either side of his masked face. He felt it again just then, tearing open his mind and through the self-made mental blockades.
"I left because I was forced to, Emilia." Theocelese said, wanting to put a hand on her shoulder, but he knew better than that right now. Where, and how to continue and begin now? There was no way those eight words would suffice and his self-control was slick with the oils of his own fury.
"I cannot speak for your father, though his reasons will always be his own, he would understand in earnest what I am about to tell you. That night you unleashed that...monster...I let myself be someone that I am no longer. An old part of me took over, one that is centuries old, and in losing myself, I lost someone else. My daughter was killed in the crossfire...do you understand? Not just her, but people I considered to be friends and neighbors. People who came to visit me when my cancer was at its most malicious. I let them die. My only child, the one person in all existence that mattered most to me." He knew all the others meant nothing to Emilia, but as a daughter to someone that commanded a considerable amount of respect in the Arrancar's eyes, he hoped the girl would at least accept this. "The Hirashi woman will help me find my child if I aid them against the Quincy." At the mention of the honour-lacking cowards, and the way he said the name of their people, it was as if switch flicked in his mind. The intent in his eyes grew far more hostile than before.
"There is so much more at stake than you understand, girl...Much beyond your comprehension!" This slew of words did not come out as calm and collected. Instead, these were growled out between gritted teeth. In a fraction of a second, the Arrancar's demeanor shifted. He looked agitated, no, something far beyond that. Hands twitched and fingers were lit with spasms, and the features of his face jerked back into a scowl. By all accounts, this had not been the jovial man Emilia always knew. He stepped in closely, and aggressively. He'd changed, or something about him did drastically. "You think I hate the Shinigami? No, I hate their insolence. It reminds me of that supposed "King" Agamemnon...so high and mighty, nothing without others to do the dirty work for him...and if it wasn't for that Sorceress, or for you, I would not be here. I fight for no one but the return of my daughter and my wife!" Now, Emilia was the one subjected to a crooked finger aimed at her. Theocelese only ever mentioned his formerly mortal wife a couple of times, but from what was said of her, the woman was dead. Had been dead for a long time. If Emilia could keep her own composure, and not feed the Arrancar's own sporadic and sudden flames, she would understand there was a great deal he was not telling her. And if the right questions were asked in the right way...maybe his temper would let loose the answers to those questions.
He spoke words that stabbed at her very core, she understood all of it. The pain of losing loved ones, of having people taken away from her simply for existing. Did he think she could not comprehend such a feeling? Such a.... hole in her heart? She had lost so much. There were things she had never told him, just as he did the same. How was she to know he once had a family? A daughter and a wife? Though, she took the blame on that one. She had never bothered to ask, and just assumed that he had either forgotten his mortal life, or no longer cared to remember. She was never human, but she had a family, even before Kisho had taken her in. But to make these assumptions that she was completely oblivious to pain? No... and to try and defend why he joined the Shinigami? No, they were still the enemy, even now.
When he had finished speaking, and jabbed his own finger towards her, it did little to ease the scowl on her face. "We are ALL monsters, Theo. You, me, the Shinigami. Humans, Quincy. EVERYONE. We all simply choose to show it in different ways. They are our enemy, and always have been. Do you think their opinion of us has changed simply because we agreed to help them in this war?" That would never happen. "They will either throw us to the wolves and hope we die, or kill us themselves when this is all over. No matter what you think, we will never be anything but abominations in their eyes. A very small part of her hoped for otherwise... No! She was to hate them. Always.
"As for your family, I regret never asking about them, and I will take full blame for being ignorant of their existence, but did you think I would not help you find them? That you could not come to me? You are like a brother to my father, and an uncle to me. I would have helped you track them to the ends of the earth if that is what you desired, and if someone barred our way, my sword would have been yours!" Did he think so little of her that he felt he could not ask for her help? Was his use of 'girl' his way of showing that he thought of her as nothing but a child playing soldier? I am not that weak little girl that my father found. You think I do not understand your pain? That I have not suffered as you have? Kisho is not my real father, Theo. My family was slaughtered by an Arrancar, and he took me in. I watched Kisho nearly die to defend me from an Espada." She shook now, but not with rage.
With sorrow.
"I once promised you that I would tell you of father before he succumbed to his madness... but I never told you why he fell in to such a state. I was ambushed by the same Arrancar who took the lives of my parents, he nearly gutted me. An attempt to hollowfy me, and it almost succeeded. Father was... forced to end my life. It was that, or become a mindless creature. It was a decision that haunted him for the years to come. I am only here by the use of an artifact he found, capable of restoring my spirit to my body. It was a... painful experience, and her appearance had changed slightly. The artifact seemed to mirror the holder, which is why she so closely resembled him despite not being related by blood.
"So do not presume that I do not know pain, Theo. I understand yours, and I would have helped you had you permit it. if you wish the aid of the Shinigami woman, than so be it, do what you must." It had all come out in one blur, she had not intended to tell him of her past, not yet. But how could she not? At least the rage within was beginning to die.
"So seems to be the tale everyone spins, all seeming to forget the fact that I know what I am. Embrace, what I am. Hate, what I am." The words seethed out with fleks of foam at the thought of his painful and horrific death. Even that paled in comparison to turning into the soul-eating monstrosity. Still, Emilia chose to not let her own inner fires rise, and in doing so with what was all said, choked the oxygen out of Theocelese's own. It was a rare day indeed that this occurence happened, yet the Vizard was aided by the man's own subconscious desires. To feel and touch her again...to hear his lost one's singing voice and each exhale of air or movement of her slender arms produce music from the heavens. The Arrancar took in one deep breath, finishing the cigarette before spitting it out on the floor. He'd litter as much as he gods-be-damned-please. The smoke followed fast behind the mutilated filter. "I...I am sorry Emilia...I truly am...I've done to you what I have done to many others, and in doing so much of what I have worked for has been shattered. Friends and family, lost to the astral winds."
He hugged the smaller warrior just then. It did not last long, but it was meant to be comforting none the less. It seemed both made errors...neither told the other much of what should have been said already. With a hand still on Emilia's shoulder, he continued now. "I regret the same as well....my apologies for never inquiring. I'd always thought that when the time came for you to share with me what you have shared now, it would be in a circumstance unlike this." It made sense now that he knew the truth behind the matter. He'd tried to probe Kisho's mind on more than one occasion, to try and ease whatever it was that he endured alone. It never happened, and before he knew it, the man just....vanished.
"I...like your father, keep my burdens to my own. It is not because I think you are weak, Emilia, that I've never told you of my past or asked for aid. It is due to the fact I would never involve you in matters where you could be harmed on my end." His hand lifted, and for a third time, Theocelese lit up a cigarette. The zippo clicked and clacked, open and closed. He took a step back to avoid plaguing the girl with the residual smoke. "I disappeared once before. My wife was kidnapped, and I was led to believe that my killing her meant her lost forever. Such is not the case. The old gods are real, Emilia, the ones we flattered by taking on their names...Have you ever wondered why, whenever you spoke the name Apollo, I grew agitated? It is because he is the one orchestrating this game. One that I have been unwillingly forced to play for a great deal of years. I will murder that filthy cur, and I would see my family returned to me. If you've any means to aid me in finding my daughter's spirit, and supposing we find her here...It will change things for me here." Theocelese's mouth opened, as if to speak more, but then closed. Theocelese's mind was debating something. Making a decision, it appeared. And when his lips parted once more, it seemed that decision had already been made, "I entrust to you two secrets. One your father knew, and to this day he is the only other warrior to know of this, one I only learned myself not too long ago. There is a secondary form beyond the release of my Zanpakutou. And the other? " This caused a shudder of paranoia to hit the Arrancar. He looked around, double checking to make sure no one was around. Then again, this wouldn't be just told open and plainly. Emilia knew him to be full of vagueness and riddles, when needed. "Look in the old texts...an Epic tale that has been translated throughout the years...of a time when two countries waged a war and their respective patrons with them. I was friends to Nobody....and my mother's biggest error was my first bath." There were multiple points of emphasis on some key words. Hopefully Emilia picked it up.
It had been an eventful morning, first this meeting of once former enemies, now allies forged in the heat of war. Now this argument between two friends, allies. Family. Still, it was something they both needed, perhaps to relieve some of the weight on their shoulders. They both had much of it, both having their own people to care for, their own worlds to over see. Hueco Mundo was currently occupied by some of the Quincy, and he had a little more on his plate, but that was a temporary... annoyance. They would be removed from that land. When he embraced her, she returned it, not having felt a hug in such a long time, it was... welcoming. She did not consider herself a softie by any means, and rarely allowed her harder exterior to break, but she was not heartless, either. She was forced to bottle most emotions, Kisho did not allow weakness. Not openly, anyway. What most didn't realize was that in private, he was a gentle, loving father. She was cared for, protected. The battlefield was a different story. He was ruthless, had mercy for no one, and cared little for anyone who would get in his way.
She smiled up at Theo when they broke the embrace and she clapped her on the shoulder. It felt good to get all of this out in the open. "I seek no apologies, friend. Only understanding." And it was true, they each had their own reasoning for things they needed to do, and she was okay with that. She just needed to understand why, to know that she would not be left behind. Not again. Still, she did not tell Theo everything. Not yet, she wasn't ready for that. Perhaps further down the road.
She listened to him again, and understood his reasoning for not involving her, but she could handle herself. She was trained by Kisho himself, learned from those around her, and taught herself what she could. She had proved that in the battle against the Quincy. Not only was she combat ready, but she knew tactics as well, strength alone didn't win wars. Not in a situation like this. But... she merely nodded. "I'm sure I can be of aid. If I know what she looks like, my Spartans remain in the Rukongai, I can relay the information and have them scout the districts. As for your God problem.." She grinned. "If you need aid, I've never hunted a God before." Now THAT would be a fight. To know that the Olympian Gods truly exist, and one had made enemies of Theo? That is something she did not want to miss out on. She would PAY to see that fight.
And he had entrusted her with something persona, secretive. Something shared with only Kisho. Her eyes widened in... amazement. Curiosity. Wonder. A second form beyond that of Ressurreccion? Was it truly possible? She had never heard of such a thing, but... it made sense. If there was a Shikai and Bankai, why could there not be something beyond an Arrancars initial release? "This... form. You will show it to me, yes? Oh, Theo, you must! It sounds... wondrous!" She had grabbed him by the arms now, and nearly shook him like an earthquake in excitement. Power... it was.. exhilarating.
As for the other secret, she knew a little about ancient Greece and its history, and she had begun her own research when she had the time to study fathers notes and tomes, but there were still some names and places that eluded her. It was something she would have to fully look in to, in order to grasp the true meaning of it. She released Theo, and straightened up.
"Okay, with all this out of the way, and besides the 'homework' I now have, we have two things on the agenda! First... this second form of yours. I really want to see it, so we must find a place in secret! I will tell no one but I truly wish to see it. The second..." This was a personal interest of her own, something she had considered before. "The former Espada, Halibel. I want in. I had scouted her for a potential recruit before but was never able to locate her. If you have, I will be coming along to ensure her retrieval is successful. Besides... if I don't come along, who's going to watch your back and make sure you don't get yourself killed, huh?" The fury of the past had fled, and now things could return to normal.
Theocelese couldn't help but crack a smile and laugh at Emilia's sheer excitement at what had once been shared with her foster-father. If only the girl knew the terrible price that the Arrancar paid to get such a thing. Still...if it could bring joy in another, if just knowing this little bit of information helped to reveal more to Emilia than he knew, then Theocelese would take solace in such a thing. Like the Vizard, Theocelese did not think of himself as a 'softie'. A bit of a father figure to many, sure, but there were many he would meet openly with hostility. The Quincy, not withstanding. But if you called him friend or family, the chances were the Arrancar would do the same. And with so little of either of those people left in his life, the Lion would cling to them dearly. "I would appreciate their eyes remain opened." He said this, digging out an old, leather wallet. The black dye looked to be aged to the point where he should have gotten a new one, but given all that was said...moving on was no simple task. From within, he pulled out a picture. In it, a girl around the age of eighteen. Her hair was that of her father's, luscious, thick and dark brown. Her eyes, a crystal blue that could only be seen in the Aegean waters and her complexion, either taking from Theocelese himself or from both parents. He handed this photograph to Emilia.
"I will show you this secondary release once we have concluded...whatever we need to do for this Nibantai business." He gave a shrug, figuring Emilia knew more about all of this than he did. That was one of the few reasons he wanted to get to the barracks with her, and not the pride-boasting Captain. "As to my Apollo problem...I would have no risk in others dealing the killing blow, nor would I endanger others. I will offer prayers to Athena, instead, and perhaps I may convince her to visit you." That'd be something that he'd love to see. Athena and Athena. What would the conversations be? What would be said? Maybe, just maybe, the elder being could say the things he found hard so hard to say.
Theocelese gestured for Emilia to continue towards the barracks, his thoughts going to Tia Hallibel now. His hand rose to scratch at the bearded jawline again, the other resting on the pommel of his blade. "I'm glad the meeting went as smooth as it did, Emi...because you are one of the few I did have in mind to plan this assault with...and having a strong arm to keep my sorry ass alive does help, too."He shot back with a wide grin, bumping her elbow with his own. It was moments like these, beyond the knowing that there was to be fountains of blood spilled and bodies massacred, that getting to make these jokes helped to steel the nerves.
She had taken the photo from Theo, studied it, memorized the features, and tucked it safely in between her breastplate and the soft cloth underneath. It would be safest there, and when she had the first chance, it would be given to the Spartans to look for. Both in the human world, and the Rukongai. There was nothing else to be said about that, she knew it was a touchy subject, and do her best to aid him. However, she was having a hard time containing her excitement when he had told her he would show her the release. It made her want him to show her right here and now, but she understood why he kept it secret, and would try and be as patient as possible.
For now.
As for this God business, she merely nodded and understood his reasoning. This was personal, and he had to do this on his own, but he knew her offer was there, and it would remain. Though the thought of communing with the God she took the name of, was amusing. She wondered what she was like, and if they would get along. Probably. They were both warriors, after all. Smiling, she nodded in his direction, and began walking towards the Second Division barracks. "Yes, well, I hadn't come with the intention of joining their cause, but... some things came to light recently. Now, I have my reasons, and it seemed to work out better than I thought. We will find Tia, and hope that she is willing to aid us. Besides, I wouldn't mind getting a close look at her..." She mumbled the last bit, but grinned to herself at the thought. "Now then, shall we get you acquainted with the barracks? Though.. I fear their sleeping arrangements may not be suitable for someone of your size. We may have to make some adjustments." There weren't many Shinigami his size. But they would make do.
"We have our reasons Emilia, for everything we do. I'd be a hypocrite to fault you for that." He said, absent mindedly tugging away at his smokes as they walked. "Hallibel will have nothing to do with the Gotei, for that I am sure, but her and I are well acquainted. She is one to listen to reason, especially to the one who helped secure her status within Las Noches. From a strategic standpoint, it is best to attack the Quincy from multiple directions. Another general on another front will do us well." He said, a sly grin forming on his face. "And a looker, to boot. You have good tastes." A brow rose, curious to see the reaction from what was said. There'd been those odd moments of tension between Theocelese and Tia. They were extremely rare, and even more brief, where the two had just stared at one another with mugs of tea in hand. Nothing ever came from those times, and thankfully so. Theocelese could not call Las Noches a permanent home forever.
The idea of the Second Divison quarters not having suitable to his size was odd. To this, the Arrancar was genuinely curious. "Does this former squad of yours not have fighters as big as myself?" And now, the man scanned over his own form. He was tall, and broad shouldered to be sure...but the very notion was perplexing. If anything, he'd string a hammock up somewhere and sleep outside. It wasn't the first time he'd done such a thing, and it certainly wouldn't be the last. Though, another topic came to mind that clawed at his brain. "What can you tell me of the Gotei Captains? I've heard Zaraki is a force to be reckoned with, and Kyoraku is a pleasure to relax with. Do you think it possible I am able to test their strengths?" What he was really asking was, could there be a way to coax them into duels? Non-lethal ones, of course, but Theocelese was not just a man who wanted to shed blood for no reason. At least, he never used to be. The little flickers of rage were beginning to contradict what went on behind those golden eyes. It was more a strategic plan, to see what these people were capable of. There was no reason to fight with, or on behalf of these people if they could not, or would not be able to fight themselves. There was glory and vengeance to be had, but him and Emilia were just two people. Even the foes they faced would have to out number them at least five or six to one respectively, but Theocelese was not in this for a beautiful death. There was much waiting for him beyond the fires of war.
She shot a quick glance at Theo, her cheeks flushing slightly. Which she attempted to hide. "Yes, well, what I meant was that I merely wanted to see her in action. I hear she's quite the fighter." She cleared her throat. "We have faced the Quincy before, they are strong, but nothing we cannot handle. The Gotei suffered losses because they grew too lax, unprepared. We will not let that happen a second time." They claimed to be a military state, yet they allowed the enemy to take take them by surprise. It was pathetic. But the two of them would fix that, they would teach them proper strategy, force placement, and tactics that they were unaccustomed to. It would serve them much better than what they housed now.
She merely shrugged at his next question, though. "It may have changed since my time here, but usually, no. It did not suit the requirements of the Division. They relied on Stealth and worked in the shadows. They had no need for size." Besides Omaeda, who was a noble and had his own house anyway, she could not recall anyone of size. She thought for a moment. "Zaraki is dangerous. Reckless. Not because of his raw strength, but because he does not know when to quit. The man could lose both arms and he would place the blade between his teeth and continue fighting. He would welcome challenge, but I do not recommend utilizing him on the battlefield in a group setting. He would only get the others killed." And it was true, while she had respect for his strength, he was unreliable.
"Shunsui, on the other hand, is less likely to fight. I do not know the man personally, but father often spoke of him with respect. The only Shinigami he ever did so. Still, I heard he prefers the drink over the blade. He is strong, but not one to flaunt it, so I fear you may not be able to see him in battle. At least, not until the Quincy appear again." She shrugged again. "Sui Feng, well..." She trailed off for a moment, seemingly lost in thought. Shaking her head, she brought herself back to reality. "Well, she no longer leads the Second Division so it matters little. The others, they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Most will avoid us, though. It is not with welcoming arms that they invite us, Theo. It will take time before anyone is willing to speak with us outside of a battle." It was the truth. They were still outsiders, former enemies. They would not be so warm.
As they neared the Second Division, she pointed. "My former home. I spent many days of my youth training here. Long before I had met father." She smiled. Simpler times.
"I've never seen her combat capabilities...I was....lost during our fight in Hueco Mundo." He played along, albeit with a somber tone. He hadn't recalled much, if any of that fight. It took one of Las Noches' Executioners to shake him and repeat his name to get him to snap out of the nearly orgasmic feeling in the aftermath of butchery. His hands had grown so slick with blood, and his form covered in so much gore, he could barely keep hold of his own sword. His consciousness returned when that first sigh escaped his lips when it was all over. It was the first time in a major fight he'd felt the rage take over. It wasn't simple anger empowered by adrenaline, it was a reflection of the chips and cracks in the psyche of Theocelese, giving way to being Achilles.
"Interesting..." The Arrancar mused. While he was not a giant fan of the cloak and dagger approach to a fight, anyone who knew him even remotely could say that much, he did understand the need for those tactics. It was the same stance as ranged warfare. Use as needed, but ultimately, one should always face their opponent face to face. Furthermore, his suppositions on the Captains he named were right, save for Kenpachi. That man definitely was one he needed to have a scrap with, despite the Captain's off-putting leave at the end of the meeting. "I will only help these people so long as we are not subjected to Roman tactics. I have no qualms leading the vanguard, but if I do not see Shinigami bodies beside me, and if they treat either of us with malcontent well into the duration with this conflict....once I find my Alexandra, I will depart, and if you would have it, I respectfully ask you do the same. They have their chance with the both of us, let us hope they do not take our assistance lightly." He spoke honestly, but sharply. Aye, Emilia of all people knew Theocelese to be a man of his word. It was never broken unless extreme circumstances demanded it, but even the most loyal of creatures retaliated when abused. The ball was now set in the court of the Gotei, and it was their actions alone which would prompt the Arrancar's decision. The Quincy were high priority of course, but if it came down to it, Noxa's teeth would be clogged with the meat of the Wandenreich and the Gotei 13 alike.
Theocelese looked around the Barracks and felt...suddenly larger than before. He frowned a little, but from what was said, it was to be expected. "I'm a novice in terms of these skill sets. Perhaps you will teach me, yes? The great warrior king Leonidas once employed an assassination attempt against the king Xerxes, you know. It could prove to be useful if we are able to infiltrate the Quincy realm." That begged the question if Theocelese could keep his calm long enough to actually pull off a stealthy entrance. He hadn't thought of that, though, as the talk of a return to home made him smile.
"Maybe if we have the time, I can take you to the village where I grew up. It is only fair that you introduce to your former home that I do the same with mine."
