The rattling train car shudders as the brakes of the main engine engage and start screeching, grinding the whole vehicle to a slow crawl. Adam looks out the foggy window, snow and wind billowing over the landscape in waves like the ocean. Tugging the edges of his collar tighter into his neck he pulls his clothes tighter in attempt to stay warm, the poor insulation in this cheap commute car leaving a great deal lacking.
'Bout time, its been over five hours. Adam stands up, stretching out his back and legs, happy that he is finally getting to get off this blasted train and walk around some. His legs suddenly start tingling, the sensation only getting worse by stretching and trying to walk it off. Shaking his foot he grabs a backpack, his whole trips worth of supplies packed into it. Some small food rations, a global cell, some rope just in-case he needed to bind something and a single knife wrapped with two more days worth of clothes.
Slipping his bag on Adam walks down a short hallway leading to the side door where passengers get on and off the train. This was certainly not the first time that Adam has ridden a train but it is by far one of the longer trips that he has taken, the train ride actually consisting of two rides, a three hour ride and then this one, the five hour ride. Climbing down the steps the cold wind of the mountain air whips Adam in the face nearly stealing his breath.
Sneaking its way down the collar of his jacket the cold gives his entire body chills. Hiking the bag up higher Adam looks out at the small train stop, a small building to sell tickets and a few benches for people waiting for their rides. Walking around the train station and along the sidewalk Adam comes face to face with what looks like it is the entire town in front of him. On his right a bank and a few small houses are all that appear to be kept up with the wrest of the street being slightly run down.
On the left side of the street there is a small hotel and bar in one building, a sheriffs department and a small department store. 'Oh good, i was worried that this was going to be fun.' There was no one here to hear his sarcasm but even so he was not going to be silent for another minuet, the noise of the train making it impossible to talk while it was moving.
Stretching Adam feels a cold breeze slip down one sleeve and up to his armpit forcing him tuck his arms in and head towards the small bar. Out front a single motorcycle is parked, snow packing its way into its crevices. Beside it a car is covered from view by a four inch thick layer of snow making its model or brand indistinguishable. Each step Adam feels the crunch of snow under foot, his footprints behind him trailing him all the way to the station.
The bar itself is a bit rundown, its walls a pealing brown paint and old wood. Its windows are covered by thick wooden storm covers and a thin layer of snow. Walking up to the front door Adam pushes the door open and steps in, warm air batting him in the face. Oh my god it feels good in here. Even only being outside for just a few minuets Adams hands stung from the cold, the snow melting through his shoes and chilling his feet.
"EH SHUT THE DOH! ITS COLD AS A MOTHA OUT THER'!!!" Startling Adam the sudden aggressive voice makes him step in and push the door shut, snow gusting into the gap until the last moment. Shaking his jacket Adam tries to get the majority of the snow off his shoulders and rubs his head to get the melted snow off his hair. Turning back to the bar he is greeted by three people sitting at the bar, one rather young appearing bar tender and an empty room of tables. Behind the bar an assortment of bottles, all half full sit on a shelf with a glass mirror behind them.
The four people at the bar, two men in flannel with rather impressive beards one older man with a rifle on the ground at his side and another female, middle aged but rather well kept all just stare at Adam as if he were the first human that they had ever seen. The bartender, a younger male who couldn't be more than twenty if that, speaks up. "Well come on, sit down. Its cold as devils out there. What can i get you?" Adam smiles, happy about the friendly welcoming after the startling instructions to close the door.
"Well actually can I get a water? No ice please," Adam was already tired of the weather, ready for the warmth of Karakura town once more but that was to be a little ways off his job really only just starting. The town was deserted, normally a small tourist location to visit the summit of a nearby mountain. It was a two day hike but not for nothing. Rumor has it that for everyone that makes it to the peak gets a wish that will be granted after a year. A silly dream of a rumor but none the less it drew in a bit of a crowd every year, simple people gathering for the opportunity to put their dreams into something.
Adam disbelieved in the nonsense behind wishes, maybe at one point in his past he would have thought that the notion of wishes being cute but too much has happened to him and left him a little bitter to the thought that wishes were possible. The kid behind the bar hands him a clear plastic cup of water and sits back on a cushy seat that was below eye level behind the bar. "So what brings you out here? Not the mountain I hope. No one has been up there for over two months now, not with all the missing people and deaths in the area."
The older man with the rifle coughs, obviously trying to get the kid to shut his mouth. No real need though, Adam has come here with the purpose of finding out why all these people have been vanishing. It wasn't too abnormal for people to go missing, this region having about four people go missing on the mountain a year but this was out of the ordinary. Nine people have vanished and not all at once. Once person week for the past two months have gone missing breaking the total missing in the past two years and catching the attention of the local police department, the regional government and the new stations one the internet reporting on odd happenings around the world.
It was actually this particular thing that had caught Adams attention. A small new snippet claiming that the number of missing people here was more than doubling in one year. Having nothing else to do and knowing that this used to be what his family did before they were all put down he decided while eating a T.V. dinner that he was going to go out and look into the disappearances. The next day, his bag packed and his tickets bought he was on his way.
"No its alright, I am here for the mountain. I'm a bear hunter from America, rumor is that you have the biggest bear here that has been sighted in about five years." The two men in flannel look to each other and back down at their beers.
The gruff older man coughs and smiles through a grizzly beard," Well kid your out of your luck, there ain't no one that will take you up on that mountain without an armed escort. There's been no tails of a bear out here though but 'spose that if its all the way out in your neck of the woods and you have paid to fly your way out here you'd be willing to hire a guide."
Adam smiles, old men like this generally didn't give half a damn about danger long as they have a bill or two to get their next drink," Yeah I'm looking for a guide as far as the first missing person. After that I'm looking to go on by myself. There isn't any point in dragging two people into the woods looking for one bear."
The middle aged woman at the far end of the group stands and speaks up. "Good, then it'll be four hundred now and another hundred when I get you to the first missing persons camp site. When you change your mind and decide to come back it will be another four for me to escort you back." Walking around the older man she reaches down and grabs the rifle, its scope having a small rabbits foot hanging down on a small chain from the scope mount. She wore a black winter jacket with grey fur interior and blue jeans pulled over a pair of hiking boots.
"Oh well..." Adam was unsure of how to react. He fully expected that the guide was going to be this older man, some kind of old timer that knew the woods like the back of his hand. What was the worst that could happen? I'll just send her back after we get there. "I suppose thats fine with me. I didn't realise that the guide would be..." faltering for a sencond he considers what to say other than a woman," so young."
"Mhmm, yeah that's what I thought," Heading to the door she mutters some indiscriminate insult under her breath. "I'll be here tomorrow morning at seven, be ready then because its a days hike to the base of the mountain." With that she pulls open the door, the white outside lighting the room and spilling snow drifts into the room before the door closes behind her and seals them off from the weather outside.
Turning back Adam makes a face at the bartender showing that he didn't mean anything by thinking that she was a woman. "So what do you have to eat here?" Laughing lightly the tender pulls a single sheet of paper out with some foods written on it in pen with single digit numbers beside them.
"We are out of the pork sandwiches, the Rubens, the pizza, the hotdogs and the soups," the bartender looks over to the two guys sitting with their beers. Looking over the small list Adam sees...two things that are on the list that are not out. A burger and a salad both costing twelve dollars. What in the hell? This is a fucking rip off. This is so over priced...god damn it...
"I guess I'll have the burger then," Adam says putting his paper down and drinking some more water. The bartender reaches over and grabs the paper and slides it under the bar out of sight. Walking over to a small mini fridge he grabs a burger, wrapped in a prepacked bag. Well...that figures. Pulling the bag open the bartender sticks it into a fridge under the bar and plugs the number and hits start. This is my life now isn't it? This is what I am now.
"So what kind of bear did you hear about? Out here there was rumors of some wolves because of the attack sites. Seemed like there were too many of them to be a bear as they don't travel in packs and I can't imagine that the new has kept the story straight all the way to where your from." The bar tender pours more water into Adams glass and goes back to his seat.
"Well the news said that it was a black bear but they are not from this region so i looked into it and the largest bear i could find was a brown bear, but this one was supposed to be bigger than most. What are you talking about wolves?" Adam listens to the sound of the microwave humming under the bar, nuking his meal to be super heated in the center and still frozen on the outside with wet spongy patches.
"Yeah there was a park ranger that came by about three weeks ago to survey what was happening and he said that the area was trashed, the campsites demolished. The tents themselves were shredded and the trees were marked, the bark ripped off like they were territory placers for a pack of greys." Adam knows that he is referencing some grey wolves, supposedly some of the more ferocious wolves out there but that didn't really match up with what he had heard or what he thought the problem really was. Grey wolves, while fearsome, do not normally target humans or shred trees like that.
Even bears, which are known to de-bark trees in their territory arn't know for attacking people this regularly. Looking to the two keeping to themselves Adam waits until one looks up from his hushed conversation with his companion before addressing him. "What about you? What do you think it is?" The man looks uncomfortably at his friend before speaking.
"Your not from around here so you wouldn't know but there are some things that you shouldn't discuss and if you want to walk out of this town on your own legs I suggest you eat your burger and stay off the mountain side. No offense pal." Finishing off his beer he stands up and bumps his pal to leave. Standing up they gather themselves and start to leave when the second man speaks to Adam quietly.
"Don't mind him. He is really superstitious and doesn't like talking about the mountain. He thinks that it is being stalked by some kind of witch and its out there taking people to do some kind of black magic bullshit. Personally from what I have heard there is some kind of mad man running around taking people and shredding the camp sites. Would make sense as none of the bodies have been found but plenty of blood have been in the sites." His friend, Mr. Witch bumps him in the shoulder to leave whispering about how talking about the mountain can get you targeted next. Walking out the bar they argue about how black magic is and is not real.
A ding from behind the bar catches Adam's ear and brings him back to his growling stomach. The barkeep puts his microwaved burger on a plate and takes his twenty, digging through his pockets to find change. Taking the change Adam slips it into his pocket, just crumpling the bills up and stuffing them down. The burger was terrible, too hot and too cold in different spots, burning him more than once. Regardlessly though he finishes it off and packs up, heading towards the door. "So the hotel is open right?"
The bartender nods in agreement," Yeah but its nothing to be proud to stay in. Most of your average tourists here spent their nights on the trail, moving towards the summit, leaving as soon as they get back. Just try to make sure you get a room with working heater though, those walls are thin and you'll freeze your ass off if you cant get that heater on."
"Thanks," heading out the door Adam is hit with a face full of wind and snow, his eyes shutting reflexively at the blinding white. Turning left he heads up what he assumed is the sidewalk to the hotel, its red neon lights off and its front door scraped mostly clear of snow. Walking up to the rotating doors Adam pushes his way in, the small amount of snow caught in its way getting pushed into the hotel lobby.
A triangle wet floor signs sits on the middle of the hotels lobby floor, showing that the snow just melts and sits. A girl sitting on a nearby couch watching a T.V. showing a documentary on the life cycle of a beaver turns and looks at Adam hopping up and speed walking behind the counter to greet him. "Sorry about that, we haven't had anyone in for a while." Adam smiles and puts on his most charming smile, this girl must have been about twenty-ish, her red hair tied up and rolled in a bun. A small name plate on her shirt is too far away for him to make out so he starts over.
His confident stride though would betray him, his heel hitting a small pool off water his foot slides a few inches. Startled Adam tries to recover but over compensates and just crumples on the ground trying to not hurt himself landing flat on his butt with a satisfying splash. Blood rushes to his face as he feels the ice cold water of the snow soaking its way into his pants chilling his legs. The girl behind the counter stifles a laugh as she watches Adams face contort in embarrassment and surprise.
The laugh fades away as she realises that she could very well be in trouble for not mopping up the water and someone slipping in it and falling down. Just as fast as she laughed her faace changes to worry as she waits to see Adams reaction. "Are you-" Adam cuts her off with a loud outburst of laughter. Her relief is evident when he obviously is fine and does not seem to be that embarrassed by the accident.
Adam waves her off through the fits of laughter and rolls to one knee to stand up, shaking his hands off and flinging the water onto the ground. Slapping his hands together his laughter subsides to a chuckle. "I'm fine, I didn't see the water. Would have bee fine if I hadn't over reacted."
"Are you sure that your okay?" the girl has bright red hair, obviously dyed and kept so that it would make an attempt to be 'natural'. Taking a moment to regain his composure Adam walks up to the counter and props one elbow on it and give the girl a half smirk. It is obviously an attempt that would appear to hitting on her but due to his fall it appears to be a joke. Adam does his best to hold a straight face while he is playing, the possibility that this young woman would find him more amusing rather than feel bad for him falling down being his goal.
Straightening out when she stares at him, oblivious to the possibility that he was joking Adam clears his throat. "Yeah um... do you have a room available?" Adam smiles and pulls out a wallet on a chain, flipping it open and pulling out his ID and a global traveling credit card.
"Yes," her face down as the laughter started to creep back up on her. "I have a single bed for eighty five dollars a night." She clicks about the screen some more, looking around the screen for more information.
"Perfect. I will take the room for the night then," Taking his card she smiles, handing him a few papers to sign, mostly about the no smoking policy and no pets rule. Adam signs by the 'x's and the 'i's getting his room key and a receipt. "Over here on the right?" Nodding to him she smiles and thanks him for the business. Heading off Adam watches his feet and makes sure not to step into any more puddles of water.
Down a short hallway he finds his room, a peeling red painted door with a corroded brass handle. The carpet in front of the door is brown, a darker brown in the carpet from some unknown stain. Picking his feet up he opens the door and steps over the stain, avoiding the thought of what this stain was created by. Inside his room the room itself is rather nice, the level of cleanliness apparent in how the bed was kept and the room was properly dusted.
Flopping into the bed face first Adam closes his eyes and lets his traveling exhaustion settle in and take his mind into the black of sleep. His dreams are short, filled with odd images of animals darting through the woods, the yellow of wild eyes watching him as he travels. It is not long before the white light of the sun glows into his rooms window, waking him and drawing him out of his bed still dressed in what he was wearing the night before.
Checking his phone Adam sighs, the time being about forty five minuets before seven. Sitting on the bed he buries his face in his hands, blocking the light from his face so that his eyes have a bit of a better chance to adjust the morning sun in his window. Reaching into his bag he pulls out some personal hygiene things and heads into the bathroom so that he can get cleaned up brushing his teeth and shaving.
After a few minuets Adam is cleaned up and out the door, brushing his short hair off to the side in an attempt to find some kind of style that looks like he spends a little bit of time cleaning up in the mornings. Walking down the hall he hikes his bag up on his shoulders hooking up a holster to his hip with a three round revolver loaded with 50 cal short rounds. The powder in the shells them selves is not at all combustible making the weapon almost just for appearance, intimidating to the eye but in the hands of Adam it is truly deadly.
With the power granted to all Fullbringers Adam is able to detonate the air inside the void of the shell with enough force to emulate that of a real bullet. The best part of this type of weapon though is that any Fullbringer worth their weight in salt is able to create more rounds out of stone on the fly.
At the front desk the young girl has her forehead resting on top of her crossed arms behind the counter. Walking quietly Adam clips his belt around his waist, the belt made of a green granite looking leather and being five times as dangerous as the pistol on his hip. Stepping lightly he pays close attention to the ground, not letting himself slip in the water again as he did yesterday. Just outside the the door the wind is dead, the entire town a brilliant white, coated in a think layer of powdered snow.
Walking back to the bar Adam listens the the soft crunch of the snow underfoot. The still of the town all around him is almost eerie in its complete lack of life, the mornings spent warming up and getting ready for work.
