Let those whom question know pain. They scream out not understanding their fate while knowing what horrific outcome passed. Bit by bit, piece by piece, tar like substance was ripped away from large mass, glowing yellow orbs hidden behind large white skull mask dimming with each bite. Yet what crawled atop two, soon to be, corpses shouldn’t had, for It was but one of the Living Dead. With bottom atop hard surface and legs spread out, she had lovingly mounted the beast. Hands tenderly caressing down it’s large back, feeling old scars across many battles. Up to its cold, icy mask where her tongue licked ever so carefully. Tasting the tormented emotions it felt from bitterness sorrow and anger.
The final span came, Gabby crawling forwards with emerald pools joyfully glaring into one of its sockets. The wicked grim, the tongue sticking out like a goof and small red horns atop her head. This is where Gabby plunged her head into the eye socket and began devouring the screaming beast from the inside out. Bit by bit, piece by piece. The large beasts dimming roar could hardly be heard in the back allys of this sleepy city. Before long, half her body would be inside its skull mask.
Seran’s head tilted slightly to the side as he inhaled deeply through his nose, taking in the cool night air and its many aromas. The smell of humans was ever present in this place, a constant underlying staleness that gave him no revulsion or pleasure. But as he focused, a medley of weaker fragrances were revealed; each one a unique depiction of the world that surrounded him. One particular grouping set itself apart from the others, a combination familiar to him. His eyes snapped open. The foulness of hollows, the rich iron scent of recently spilled blood, the acrid smell of burnt material, and beneath it all an unfamiliar sweetness that intrigued him.
He straightened and lightly lightly pushed off will his feet, his surrounding blurring as the step took him the distance of several blocks in an instant. His head turned from side to side, relocating the unusual smell before he jumped a second time, this time higher, carrying him to the top of a nearby building. The smell was close now, and a deep groaning deathrattle drew his attention to the distant shadows, unpenetrated by the glowing of nearby streetlamps.
The scene itself was macabre, even from a distance, but he looked on unperturbed. It was not the gore that held his gaze, mod souls had no enmity for grotesque leftovers of combat. At this range he could clearly sense the reiatsu of the one responsible for this carnage, and, more importantly, hear it. The sorrowful song of the soul’s unveiled melody played out for him, and he found himself rather melancholy at its composition.
It grieved him further to have such an aria come from one of his own, a modified soul reduced down to a bare weaponized nerve. Just as he had once been. He stepped one final time, descending down to a soft landing only a few meters from the girl.
“You shouldn’t eat such things sister, they won’t agree with you later.”
{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} Name: Unveiled Melody Type: Item - Standard - Body Modification Tier: VII [Expertise] Condition: Not Applicable Description: Plainly stated, the soul does not see and cannot be seen. It is an intangible force that cannot easily be interacted with. In his first experiments, the most important lesson Seran learned was that his eye, no matter how he enhanced them, were limited in their perception of the soul, and therefore acting on that visual information could only take him so far. The frequency of the soul, which he had initially discovered as a means to access a being's soul to begin with, was a far greater code of information if it could be understood. To this end, Seran used his own soul and exposed it to the various frequencies he had documented from other individuals. Through this his discovered a grouping a nodes within his soul more sensitive to these frequencies, and magnified them, allowing his soul to "hear" the frequency of other souls, including the souls of inanimate objects to a degree. But this ability is not without cost, and this new sensory information stacks on top of those from his base senses. This can lead to sensory overload, and unbalancing of his own inner frequency, causing what he's dubbed a "soul migraine".
Who came near? Whose voice pulled, gnawing for attention or, more precisely, warning? Quickly Gabby’s meal should’ve been consumed, like animals who take prey away to dine in secretly. Yet she still stayed as though daring others, ones once called allies, out. Was this true or had Gabby enjoyed enveloping her body in their blood, ears bathed in tormented whales that carried tingles to unspeakable places on her body. But her feast must end. Covered by fading muck, she lifted herself from the half eaten skull; Still chewing with cheeks puffed, filled with bones. Yet like a tar pit she struggled her upper body, wiggling arms free to push in her cheeks and swallow.
“No way! This stuff tastes super delicious.” The pure grin of a girl covered n black mud blood and bone was unreasonable, yet brilliantly scarlet eyes shined with hunger and delight. “My design was for the consumption of Hollow, digest too. By the way, I’m Gabby.” She pulled a chunk of bone and meat out and extend her arm. “Would you like a bite, brother?” The Soul Society made something like her for something like this. Unreasonable , cruel, yet she was cheerful and delighted to see one of her own kind.
"No! He can't have any! You promised me I could have the leftovers!" A voice rang out, seemingly from within the shadows, Kara appeared behind Seran in open voiced complaint. Her body, freed from garments of any kind, made ready for her turn to plunge into the night's hunt. Body was cleanable, clothing harder to clean, almost impossible when stained with hollow blood. Her clothes lay neatly tucked away beneath the base of a nearby tree.
"My name is Kara." The new girl introduced herself, seemingly unashamed by her current state of attire. Passing by the new arrival, Kara seated herself beside the corpse, waiting patiently for Gabby to finish eating. "This is our prey, I won't let you have any." Kara pouted, flashing glowing blue eyes at the one she deemed intruder. An audible growl emanating from the girl's stomach. She sat, knees folded to her chest, playing with the grass below her feet. "Looks like green beans" Kara's eyes, drifting from Seran to the ground while she waited. Drooling not only at the thought, but also the smell of freshly poured Hollow blood. Pulling the grass, Kara put some into her mouth and chewed. Then swallowed. Pouting, her patience stressing as her stomach gave another audible growl.
“I must decline, my design does not call for eating hollows, only killing them.”
Gentle. He had to remember to be gentle. Modified souls had a tendency to be unpredictable when he first encountered them. The extreme trauma of their shared past often had strange effects on the innate programming contained within each of them. It was often like walking of eggshells as he tried to decipher just how sane each individual was. At the same time he couldn’t help but be curious; the structure of every unique design was a treasure trove of information he could use in his research. In this case, as per usual, curiosity overruled caution, and he found himself engrossed in what elements he could discern from studying her soul’s frequency.
“Quite intriguing, I’d heard of the predation design pattern before, but I didn’t think it would be so literal. What could the intention behind a consumption based model have been? Perhaps developing more advanced hollowfication antibodies through continued exposure by a soul that already has a high resistance. There must be deeper structural direction I can’t ascertain without a full blueprint of the soul.”
Seran continued mumbling to himself, completely absorbed in thought. He had long wondered if modified soul hollowfication concerns had been a leading factor in the decision to exterminate them. But it seemed the shinigami had been confident enough, at least in some cases, to conceive of designs meant for hollow expose far beyond the confines of combat. He was so distracted, that the appearance of the second mod soul barely registered.
“Yes two… that would make more sense. This is perhaps some kind of pack design that I’ve not heard of. But that would be….”
Horrid scene played out by new actors. Their stage an eventful alleyway filled by darkness, moon's light bleakly shining down upon the pale creature bathed in liquid. Red and black on red cloth complimented one another well in Gabby's mind, however, virgin white cloth held much greater appeal. Though Gabby's apatite hadn't completely subsided she'd made far better conversation than her ever hungry partner. Limbs freed Gabby's body while mouth ripped out flesh. Right leg rested upon beast's skull, bent at knee and Gabby's body leaned forwards with arms hanging low. Left extended out to keep her balanced. She grinned cheerfully towards Seran, emerald eyes locked in interest rather than Kara. "Don't be rude Kara, he's already declined anyway. We've more than enough to share if he wanted.
Clouds shifted, passing overhead blacking out Gabby's upper body. As though darkness held material form, crimson horns shined as green eyes. Her teeth too seen in her grin. "What are you going on about? Is the brain doing brain things? Gabby is Gabby. Kara is Kara." Why so curious? Mumblings captured Gabby's attention with tilted head like a clockwork doll. Old ramblings about nonsense kept under breath caressed is fingers around her mind, stroking and squeezing; Pulling a spiked chain towards figuring out what was going on, among something else. "I'm suddenly reminded of something. You're like one of those scientists, probing and prodding; such ramblings."
"He doesn't get any because he declined." Kara pouted at Gabby's considerate remark, plucking up and sticking more grass into her mouth. Chewing. Swallowing. Stomach giving off yet another audible growl. "Muuuh...!" She complained, chewing on her lower lip. Watching ants pass over and under between bare toes. Then burying her face between her knees. Shadows played across the hollow's corpse, extending, they obscured Kara's own visage from the newcomer's vision.
Upon mention of scientist, Kara glancing up. Glowing azure globes staring straight. Boring holes into Seran's own as if trying to see inside of him somehow. Still and silent as death she waited. Kara cared not for this man before her. She only wanted to curb this hunger. A hunger rooted so deeply inside that not even food could diminish. The flesh of hollow would subside. But Gabby's mouth did consume. Kara's ability much more complete, had to wait.
Waiting silence ended. "What kind...?" Kara stared. Continued to stare, directing her question at Seran. "What kind of scientist are you?" She asked. Voice nonchalant. Shadows drifting, hiding her face no more. "Do you experiment with things? Make new types of food for eating?" Kara's self made interest caused her to think. If he made new foods from science could she eat them? She would very much like that if he could do it. "I would love to eat some if you make it" Kara's stomach let out another grumble.
“New kinds of food? Not usually. I’m not that kind of scientist.”
But perhaps that would be a good way to keep the two of them around. Seran would never completely understand their design unless he could get them back to the lab and examine their soul structure. A plan formulated in his mind, and he reached into one of his coat pockets, pulling out a small, black bag.
“But there is a first time for everything. Give me just a moment.”
After briefly searching through the small pouch with his fingers, Seran pulled out a small red object and held it between his finger. The tiny seed was one of the many he’d collected in Las Noches before the plants their had faded from lack of care. He recalled that this particular plant had had large fruit that some of the arrancar had claimed tasted sweet, though he’d found no other use for the plant itself. The mod soul concentrated for a few seconds, forcing small amounts of his reiryoku out from his fingertips and into the seed. With a small “pop” the seed opened, and a thin tendril emerged, reaching upwards and expanding into a single miniature leaf. Satisfied, Seran set the seed on the ground, pressing the base gently into the dirt.
“You may want to stand back just a bit.”
He stood and pointed a finger down towards the tiny leaf, barely visible in the grass. A stream of red energy jumped off Seran’s finger and struck the seedling, which twitched once violently and then began to twist and bulge like a tiny green balloon. Seran stepped back, and a moment later dark green coils erupted from the ground, wrapping around themselves and stretching upwards above the mod soul’s head. The plant didn’t rise far, only about four meters into the air, then thin branches separated from the main stalk and split innumerably outwards, creating a small canopy above the three mod souls. Red leaves budded from sides and ends of the branches, and Seran reached up, guiding several of the limbs down towards himself, more red energy flowed from his hand, and ends of the branches swelled, splitting seconds later into large purple flowers bloomed then immediately faded, shedding their petals. The base of the flowers continued to expand, and as Seran watched, several melon sized fruit took shape, deep crimson in color with veins of even darker red running across them. The flesh of the fruit was almost translucent, and the outlines of numerable red seeds like the one he started with could be counted deep near the fruit’s center. The small tree’s growth slowed, and Seran plucked two of the fruits from their branches, offering them to the girls.
“Try these, they’ll certainly be more palatable then your current fare.”
"That's quite the bag of tricks there." A horrible joke meant for now, not another time. Oddness surrounded a rapidly growing seed that made no sense. Plants didn't grow that quickly but this stranger's seed did otherwise. Dangerous creatures came from plants, and if memory served Gabby correctly they were in for content not meant for children. Her drooling chuckle was in due part to Japanese adult comics. Besides eating, she had hobbies but jumping back onto all fours from a rapidly growing tree wasn't one of them. Pink hair dropped over her back and shoulders. Emerald eyes faintly glowing a red tint, as did her already red horns. A reverberating growl came from within her chest despite smirking. Despite preparing for battle her expression became blank with curious eyes glancing at the large fruit. "You're that plant kind of scientist. A bananatist? Bantist? Kara, he knows how to grow food!" Wouldn't that make him a farmer?
Gabby stood up, caution remaining in her outstretching arm. Predatory eyes locked onto the stranger's, eye feature relaxing into solemn anger. Eyes that observe and question, probing into the unknown. Her own like a caged beast untrusting to her so called caretakers, listening yet carefully waiting till they slip up for her to devour. "You're eyes remind me of theirs, looking, watching." The scientists of the Twelfth Division. Spoken in a whisper so Kara couldn't hear. She'd not want Kara reminded of those times. Her voice low and serious but then lively once again. "First bite's mine." Selfish? Yes, but she wanted to make sure nothing would happen to Kara if something happened to herself. Even if these plants were poisonous their bodies were fake, and Gabby's stomach was able to handle eating Hollow so dangerous fruit? She took a bite and slowly chewed, allowing herself to savor it. She shivered in delight.
Before Kara could try anything to the tree she glared at her. "And don't eat the tree!" The problem with Kara is she would eat nearly anything whether or not she could fit it inside her mouth. Though Gabby had a similar problem too. Turning to the stranger she gave a toothy smile. "Strap her to a table and examine her brain." She jested. "Gabby. This is Kara. Thanks for the fruit."
Kara took Gabby's statement of possession as a sign that she was done with the hollow. "Hup!" In one movement Kara swung her arms out in front of her and assumed a standing position in front of the mutilated Hollow's corpse. "I guess that means the rest of this is mine then." Kara smiled a crooked smiled to Gabby. It was a characteristic smile that tended to cross her face whenever she didn't intend to share with anyone.
Touching the corpse with the flats of both hands, the pale pink of Kara's reiryoku flowed into the dead Hollow. Allowing just an instant to settle throughout the entirety of the corpse, Kara then touched her lips to the hollow's husk. The dead beast's body seemed to disintegrate from within as Kara sucked it into her mouth all at once. Chewing a few times before swallowing the entire thing in one gulp. With hollow consumed, Kara let out a loud and a seemingly uncharacteristic burp. "Puah! that was delicious!" She squealed.
Now that her primary meal was out of the way Kara came to the treelike structure that had seemingly sprung out of nowhere. "So you are a food scientist then!" Kara accused, pointing her finger at Seran before jumping around the plant he'd made spring up in a matter of seconds. Unlike Seran, Kara began vigorously poking the tree on all sides to see if it was actually there.
"Aw... But it looks just like a big twisted green Pull-and-peel though..." Kara pouted at Gabby's warning against eating the tree itself, obvious disappointment shown on her face.
"Please don't! I'm not food for the food scientist!" Kara protested against Gabby's offering her up for Seran's examinations with arms crossed. She failed to realize Gabby was merely joking.
"Nn!" Kara agreed in thanks, pulling a fruit off the tree and biting into it. "Owah! This is super delicious!" Kara exclaimed, covering herself in bits of the fruit as she dug into it. Strange, considering there wasn't a drop of blood on the mod soul from her contact with the Hollow.
Seran locked eyes with Gabby, his voice turning cold for the briefest of moments. He could tolerate many things, but being compared a shinigami always made his anger bubble up. Luckily the other mod soul seemed to get the message, and turned her attention to the tree he had created. They both sampled the nameless fruit, their faces lighting up with obvious enjoyment.
“I’m glad you like it. There are plenty more to eat if you’re still hungry.”
Seran waved a hand, and several more viney branches bearing the hollowfied fruit extended downwards. As he had no desire to eat at the moment, Seran sat down with his back against the tree, continuing to watch the two girls with interest. Gabby made a poor joke, which Kara seemed to take very seriously, and he rolled his eyes; her brain, really? What good would that do him?
“If you don’t mind me asking, how have you two avoided detection all this time? I very rarely find other modified souls, let alone two together.”
It was possible they were the same model, but he couldn't be entirely sure. While they're attributes seemed similar at the very least, they struck him as two unique individuals. But it was hard enough for a mod soul to survive on their own, so how had these two done it together when that would've drawn twice as much attention?
Modified Souls did not require substance like other creatures. Soul Reapers only ate after extensive use of reiryoku and, like Humans, had a similar anatomy. Humans needed to eat so their bodies as they were moretal, unlike their afterlife counterparts. The constant soul devouring beasts were always hungry, Gabby having once thought if they ever felt sated. Beings like Gabby Kara and Seran only needed worry about their bodies eventually reaching a threashold where they would no longer function. Her own body was long lived and past an exporation date for deployed Modified Souls and Soul Reapers on extended missions. "You're curious how we survived?" Gabby paid some attention to Seran whilst hopping up to the tree branch like a feline. Her strong jaw muscles bit down on a branch and, using momentum, swung herself up to perch on the branch.
"This tree don't taste like regular trees." Gabby swallowed bark that was in her mouth. She'd never seen trees like that before. As someone who loved eating, almost as much as Kara, trying different types of food was a hobby. She needed something to do since being decomissioned. Kara and her mostly took up trying out all sorts of food to pass the time, avoiding Soul Reapers and Hollow when possible. It wasn't easy surviving when you weren't very good at maintaining your own body. One example, she was reaching up to grab a fruit when her left hip dislocated. This caused Gabby to lose balance and catch herself on the branch by hooking her right leg around it. So now she was hanging upside down. Meanwhile her left leg was just dangling loosely. "Damn it, not again!"
Kara remained silent as Gabby responded to Seran's question, choosing instead to grab another fruit off the instant-grow plant and continue feasting. It wasn't that Kara didn't have answers for Seran, rather she wasn't sure if she could trust him enough to outright answer them.
"Muh you said I couldn't eat it but you're eating it anyway!?" Kara protested at Gabby's announcement of the tree's unusual taste. She decided to ignore Gabby's earlier words, setting down the half eaten fruit she held and tearing a chunk out of the plant's base. Upon biting into, chewing, and eventually swallowing, Kara deemed the plant's fruit to be better tasting. She casually discarded the remaining piece and resumed eating the fruit.
"She has maintenance issues..." Kara nonchalantly announced to Seran after Gabby began dangling in the tree from her right leg. She now sat in a semi kneeling position while she polished off the rest of her fruit, watching Gabby but lacking any concern that a normal person might posses at the sight of a friend in distress. She'd gotten rather used to these issues Gabby tended to have. "I dunno why but my maintenance seems to take care of itself... I always feel better after eating one of those." Kara, one arm holding the fruit up to her mouth as she took another bite while the other motioned in the direction of where the hollow's corpse had been.
We aren't always together either. The thought of speaking those words crossed Kara's mind but stopped before actually reaching her lips. She still wasn't sure about this other mod soul and information like that could be used against Gabby and herself if they weren't careful. Though Kara didn't speak, she stared at Seran, her facial features betraying her interest in wanting to say more...
Seran waved a hand, and the branch holding up Gabby lowered itself towards the ground, setting her down gently.
“Hold still now.”
He knelt, and with practiced efficiency, straightened out out the dislocated leg and struck bottom of her foot with his palm, popping it back into place. It would likely cause a jolt through the nerves in her body, but if this was a common problem she’d probably become used to it by now.
“That should keep you together for the time being, but you should really learn how to repair yourself, these kinds of vessels don’t last longer than a human lifespan even with proper upkeep.”
"I dunno why but my maintenance seems to take care of itself... I always feel better after eating one of those."
Seran frowned slightly.
“Consuming that much spiritual matter will certainly keep you going. But I doubt it's for the reasons you think.”
Before Kara could react, he stepped forward and lightly snatched up her arm. His fingers ran around her wrist, elbow, shoulder, and then down her back, examining the bones and joints.
“You may be in better shape then Gabby, but this vessel’s base structure is still deteriorated. The two of you should’ve repaired these bodies or moved into new ones years ago.”
A physical motion commanded the plant to softly lay gabby down. The man understood wounds well enough to be gentle. She'd wonder how Seran commanded plants when plants didn't have brains. They were more like a being that could regrow so long the heart remained, in their case roots. Mod Souls couldn't regenerate like plants or Hollow. She had seen Mod Souls regenerate before similar to a Hollow's High Speed Regeneration, however, it was much more limited in function. Gabby didn't have such a design nor knowhow. The best she could do is repair whatever damage she recieved, such as replacing her hips with somebody who had the same height and waistline. That's right, her hips weren't her original nor her shoulders.
Gabby leaned back with arms behind, hands planted to keep her from laying down. Seran kneeled, straightening out the dislocated leg. This caused tense tendons to be stretched past their desired resting state. Her leg spasumed, Gabby's chuckle reverberating with pain. "That's the stuff. I like it rough." Pop. Gabby's shoulder rose, head resting on left shoulder with a disillusioned smile and pink cheeks. Honey was dripping down from her mouth. "Aaa, yeah that's the stuff." After fixing Gabby he went onto Kara, then mentioned how they needed new vessels.
"Teach me to make a better vessel!" Gabby exclaimed.
Kara watched with divided interest as Seran went over to Gabby and helped her out of her situation. The way in which this other Mod Soul contorted and displaced to replace the position of Gabby's dislocation appeared to be well practiced as far as Kara could tell... Kara noted the actions in case Gabby needed her help again when this guy wasn't around.
She'd made to take another bite of the fruit when Seran suddenly appeared beside her. "Hey!" Kara complained when his actions caused her to drop the fruit. Grabbing up her arm Seran began his own examination of her extremities which ended around her lower back.
"Deterior...ated?" Kara spoke in a questioning tone once Seran had let her go. She picked up her own arm in the hand he hadn't touched and proceeded to give herself an reexamination, trying to see what it was he'd seen that would make him say such a thing. She had a rather tough time trying to look at her own back the way the Mod Soul had. Ultimately the self examining effort she put in only managed to result in a slightly painful muscle spasm.
Returning to finish off the fruit she dropped, Kara nodded her agreement with Gabby. "I don't want to be Deteriorated..." Kara slowly pronounced the word, trying not to break it up this time. "You can show us how to repair our vessels?" Kara asked. If it were possible then maybe Gabby wouldn't have to suffer these strange detachments anymore, and whatever was wrong with her own vessel could be fixed too.
