Yuki had arrived at the destination five minutes early, just for extra prudence. Today she was working with a rising star amongst the ranks of the Kido Corps, Mitsuoki Kumagai. The two had been tasked with meddling with some ancient seals around the Shihoin household, and seeing how time had affected them. They weren't sure what exactly the kido seals were meant for but they had been told there would be no serious issues if they turned them on and off, they just needed to re-apply a couple of them and make sure that everything was in order. Some of them required two people to operate, hence Yuki and Mitsuoki would be working together. Blodeuwen had also instructed Yuki to scout him for a possible promotion when Theo had been over for dinner recently. So she would be doing both and reporting back to her cousin.
She was clad in a standard shihakusho. Thankfully they weren't required to wear funny masks any more, those things were pissing annoying. Or the silly hats. Instead standard protocol dictated a white Kido Corps armband adorn their upper bicep, so that their affiliation was known to any passing shinigami. Yuki clutched also at a number of scrolls which they'd be using to complete their task that day. Hopefully Mitsuoki was a decent guy and not some wet blanket or weirdo. There were way too many nerds in the Kido Corps.
Another trying day where Mitsuoki was told critical details at the last possible second, resulting in him being highly irritated. 'Of course those incompetent nimrods would tell me I've been reassigned, when I'm on my way to my usual post.' he thought while flash stepping as fast as possible from rooftop to rooftop. He was trying to be as on-time as possible, and not trip over his own foot while closing the distance between the prison and the noble Shihoin's home. 'Why do I even have to help with reworking seals? Was there truly no one better qualified?' he questioned. Mitsuoki wasn't the best at using kido. He was barely even qualified for being in the kido corps. While he did know how to work with the seals used by the Shihoins, there were various members who could do it far faster. His only true benefit among his peers was that, among the members of the Kido Corps, he was one of the ones who regularly took missions outside of the Kido Corps' usual assignments, which slightly increases their respectability among the actual thirteen squads.
He was already thirty seconds late, and was getting more and more annoyed with each passing second. He was beginning to get closer at this point and knew that he would need to calm himself before showing his state of mind to someone he was working with. From what he had been told, he was working with Yuki Hirashi, a member of the kido corps that was related to the captain. Exactly what her position in the squad, seated officer or not, was unknown to Mitsuoki. Wearing the standard black kimono with his Kidoshu squad badge on his left arm, and a zanpakuto at his hip, Mitsuoki suddenly appeared standing near his partner, exactly one minute, twelve seconds late. "I apologize for my tardiness, Yuki. Please inform me of any inconvenience it has caused you, and how I may rectify it." he said. His tone was level, calm, soft; but, it was also emotionally detached. The look in his eyes was harsh, cold as ice, and lacking any appreciation for the woman having waited at all for him. They also held the implication that he thought he was too high classed to have Yuki look at him, something that Mitsuoki knew was the cause for some unrest between him and the other kidoshu members. Hopefully, Yuki wouldn't pay it too much heed.
Yuki hadn't really been paying enough attention to the time to notice that Mitsuoki was late. She had been standing there kind of absent mindedly when he showed up, apologising for his lateness and talking some mumbo-jumbo about rectifying inconvenience and all that nonsense. What was he on about? Was he late? Yuki didn't even know. She didn't even carry a watch so she couldn't even verify that he was actually late, she just knew that she'd get there a little early to survey the scenery. What a weird guy. And now he was apologising and bending the knee and shit, the hell!? She pulled a kind of confused face where her eyes went wide but her iris and pupils shrank and her mouth hung agape in surprise that he was being such a weirdo.
"I- It's okay Kumagai-san." she said. "Don't worry about it." a drop of sweat drooped down her temple, before she recalled all of a sudden that she was clutching their scrolls. She exclaimed, and they flew up into the air, and scattered across the floor. She was still a little weirded out by her co-worker's formal attitude. She came to a single conclusion about him then and there; p o i n d e x t e r. Blod would probably love him, find him cute or whatever. She wondered how guys like that actually functioned day to day. Did he speak like that to his friends!? Regardless, she bent down to grab the scrolls and pass the relevant ones to him, she looked a little like a rabbit as the ribbon tied in her hair bobbed up and down like ears. Sometimes Eiji called her Usagi-chan, at his own peril.
"So we're just going to be turning the seals on and off, and we have to call back on the denreishinki when we've done 'em." she explained. Super simple. "I drew the spot you gotta stand in chalk." she said, pointing towards a circle of white chalk she'd drawn. "We can take a break for a sec to let you get your breath back if you like." she told him, examining her nails. She'd be interested to chat to this guy, who had come from outside the Seireitei for sure. "The hell you come from anyway?"
Yuki had told Mitsuoki not to worry about his tardiness in a rather shaky and slightly flustered tone just before letting out a highly surprised, random yelp of sorts and throwing a set of scrolls in the air. One of said scrolls was heading in Mitsuoki's direction and his nonchalantly caught it. Granted he wasn't expecting her to go from flustered to startled at the drop of a hat, his expression had remained the same through it.
While the 'average joe' would stand and watch Yuki cleaning up her mess, and likely lock on to the bobbing of her hair accessory, Mitsuoki was far from average. He walked closer and picked up a couple of the scrolls to help Yuki be finished faster. He didn't think anything less of her for it since he didn't understand the reasoning behind her actions, he simply assumed that it was something that was actually worthy of it. After Mitsuoki handed Yuki back her scrolls, she gave a few to him. Mitsuoki had stuffed a couple of them under his sash to keep them from sliding around and opened the first one to begin reading the intricacies held within. The task was just as difficult as he'd been told, they had to turn seals on and back off. After that, they were to notify their superiors that they've completed their task. Yuki was kind enough to mark a spot for him to stand while they performed this task, and offered for them to take a break before continuing.
Mitsuoki had already had enough time to rest from the moment he arrived to the minute or two it took for the scrolls to be collected and his assignment to be clarified. Yuki had also asked where he came from. Her manner of speaking was very casual, and completely unfitting of her noble clan's name. Mitsuoki didn't care about that, the way someone talked spoke little of how they acted. "I am from the West Rukongai, District Sixty Eight." he paused for a moment while walking to the white circle and standing in the middle of it. "I appreciate your consideration, but I have no need to rest; and Yuki... Please, address me by my first name. There is no reason for me to be addressed by my last."
He waited a moment before turning a sharp gaze to Yuki. "Before we begin..." Mitsuoki paused for a brief second "There's something that's been bothering me, Yuki. I am not the best member of this squad- I'm not even close. I barely made it into this squad when I arrived; so, why is it that I am called to a noble's home, to work on a task such as this? Surely, our captain would assign someone who is guaranteed to get it right, as well as do it quickly? Such a person would bring greater notoriety to our squad than someone who is probably on the verge of being relocated." Mitsuoki didn't know for a fact that he was going to be moved, he just expected it to happen some day. He barely performed as expected, with the rare exception for when he went above expectations. He also didn't know his own captain on a personal or professional level, so he only had his own drawn conclusions to base predictions off if. Those conclusions were based on logic and pragmatism, rather than expectations of kindness.
She laughed nervously as he helped her pick up scrolls. She'd been so surprised that she'd dropped them there and then. Luckily like literally any rational, considerate person, he hadn't just stood there and gawked at her. Once they'd gathered the scrolls and she'd ensured he had all the correct ones and she had hers, she paced back to her own circle, not too distant from his, where she'd wait until he told her she was ready.
In response to her question, which had merely been regarding where he had come from that moment just passed, he told her his place of origin, where he had been born. She regarded him with another slightly shocked, slightly exasperated face at the misunderstanding. "Uuh that's not what I me-..." she trailed off quietly, as he continued to inform her that she was welcome to address him by his name.
"Oh, uuh, sure Mitsuoki-san." she told him, before sniffing slightly. Maybe he was just not very Japanese and didn't really get that way of doing things. That was fine with her, after all. Their soshi wasn't herself particularly Japanese, and as such had a funny way of doing things sometimes. "Ahh well Mitsuoki-san I shouldn't worry about being the best," she said flippantly, not particularly good at reassurances, "and anyways I'm here to make sure it goes right." she said, with a big thumbs up in his direction. "I don't think you're likely to be relocated, I mean your kido is better than some people even in the Kido Corps. But remember, Blodeuwen-sama is our Soshi, not a taicho. And we aren't quite a squad- the Kidoshuu is a separate military organization. Remember that and you'll be fine." she told him, before furrowing her brow. So this guy had low self esteem. Hmph. Yuki figured at least she shouldn't pick on him if that was the case.
Mitsuoki continued reading over the scroll, making sure he understood what he was supposed to do for this first seal, while also listening to Yuki. Every time she called him 'Mitsuoki-san' had reminded him of the times people called him 'noble' and followed up with 'Mitsuoki-sama' or 'Kumagai-sama' or even 'Master-Mitsuoki' just to get on his nerves. He felt his already high level of irritation rising again. While internally, he was getting pretty ticked off, externally he looked as peaceful as the sea on a good day. "Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm unable to see a difference between the two. The title of a leader does not change their authority over us. The difference between Kidoshu and the other squads, in my experience, comes down to functionality and utility." He paused for a second before saying "Forget that I said that, it's a trivial matter, not worth exploration. However..." Yuki would feel his spirit pressure slightly rising, though, not by any extreme measure, just enough to imply he was irritated. "I do not enjoy being addressed with traditional suffixes. Please address me as 'Mitsuoki'." If Yuki had tried explaining the reason she used suffixes with him, tried arguing the matter or even refusing him, Mitsuoki would interrupt her and say "Otherwise, I'll address you as Yu-chan." In both statements, Mitsuoki's voice would be the same as it had always been: calm, emotionless, detached, and respectful.
Mitsuoki quickly rolled up the scroll and cleared his throat while stuffing it under his sash. "Let us begin." he said with his spirit pressure quickly dropping back to normal levels. He would follow the instructions from the scroll, just based off of memory, and even still, would fail on his first attempt. Rather than exploding the way some kido would when failed, it just fizzled out. Mitsuoki would close his eyes and let out a breath of air that wasn't quite a sigh, but it was close enough. In the back of his mind, he heard a high pitched voice calling out to him, saying 'Just kill her, already. No one's around to find out, and she should be punished for calling you by a name you don't like!' which was quickly followed by Tasogare saying 'You should simply let her call you as she wishes. Address her as Lady Hirashi, out of respect for her clan.' Mitsuoki's eyebrow twitched in irritation at the two spirits when they began arguing with each other over who made the better solution, something that always happened. Mitsuoki forced himself to ignore them and would take up his stance again and say "Once more." This second time, Mitsuoki's end would improve slightly, but enough to warrant a success. It didn't help that his zanpakuto spirits were still arguing with each other and distracting him, but he couldn't exactly fix that. It would take a grand total of six more tries just to get the first seal dealt with, after which, Mitsuoki would be breathing more noticeably. He wouldn't be panting and sweating, but he would be breathing very slightly heavier than before.
"N- nani!?" She asked, pulling another comical face of disbelief. "No, hang on," Yuki was adamant that she instruct this young grasshopper of the truth. "There's no use getting irritated with me." she told him flatly. "Hirashi-soshi is the soshi, not merely some Taicho. A commander, the same as Yamamoto-sama. The Kido Corps are not one of the thirteen court guard squads either; they are an entirely separate organization. Our job isn't to fight hollows and purify humans and defend the Seireitei. The difference lies in duty, Mitsuoki-san." she informed him, finger raised, and eyes gently shut in the epitome of condescending explanation. "I understand it must be hard for you as a pea- uuh a person from the Rukon districts. However do please try and remember. Really, it seems perhaps the standards at the academy have slipped recently if you do not possess this basic knowledge! Not that it really matters to me if you get in trouble for saying these types of things anyhow..." she admonished, passive-aggressively. She kept perfectly calm, little ribbon fluttering in the gentle breeze. If he wanted any success these were lessons he would have to learn at some point. Yuki knew that not everyone was as fortunate as her to have grown up in a noble house, having been groomed for this job their whole lives. Indeed she was kind of impressed that someone like him could have made it into the Kido Corps at all.
And now he was displaying even more weird gaijin habits. One of Yuki's eyebrows disappeared beneath her fringe, and a short 'eh?' escaped her. This guy... He truly was a break from tradition! This would all be useful intel to report back to Blodeuwen about how exactly to promote the young man if he was indeed suited for it. She simply shouted in response, out of confusion.
"You really are some kinda weird gaijin, huh, is everyone from the rukongai as strange as you, huh buddy?" she asked him, a kind of exaggerated sense of panic rather comically entering her voice as she stared him down, a large droplet of sweat descending from her temple. However, Mitsuoki simply started to attempt to engage the first seal. Yuki felt like she needed to interject to explain that it was much easier for him to deal with his first seal when she had taken off the first one that she needed to undo, and stood there, slightly unable to believe that he was really just going to try and cast the same kido what must have been ten or eleven times (she had lost count).
Finally she couldn't bear to watch it any more, and several moments before he cast the final incantation that would remove the seal, Yuki cast her own, removing the initial enchantment that bound all the kido together into one, enabling Mitsuoki to undo the first seal, with considerable effort. She rolled up her scroll and picked up the Denreishinki and called Junta Nishikawa, who was on the other end of the line.
'Mmmhmm, yeah you can run the rest now. You'll text when you're done? SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO HEAR MY STUPID VOICE!? YOU SON OF A-' but then Nishikawa-san hung up on him. She looked at her phone with a disgusted expression, before turning to Mitsuoki. "Well, Mitsuoki, we just gotta wait a couple minutes for them to text us back then we can move and look at the next set." she told him, flatly.
Mitsuoki had watched the girl getting in touch with her captain to report a successful first attempt while running her words through his mind. After a few moments, Mitsuoki simply stopped caring. Yamamoto was still titled as a captain, or sometimes referred to as the captain commander, when it came to the thirteen squads. Her point about the difference between squads was even moot since he had been on several assignments where he had to kill hollows. Then again, Mitsuoki was a bit of a black sheep among the kido corps. They were all things he didn't care to argue with her on since it was a conflict of opinion. Most likely, she had been groomed to think that way her entire life, in preparation for performing this one, single task- being in the kido corps. Mitsuoki had always been a differently thinking kind of person, even in the academy. Back then, they had explained the duties of a soul reaper as some sort of reverent, grande duty that was bestowed on them by the gods as an act of mercy. Mitsuoki saw it for what it was, killing them because there could only be one 'king' in the hierarchy.
Mitsuoki had thought back to when they were doing the seals, and how the last one was a success. Something Yuki likely hadn't known was that Mitsuoki had actually forced his reiatsu out, into the space around him, and mixed it with the spirit energy that was naturally there, in order to make it work. Even with her doing her part of the sequence, had he not done that, he would've been there for a lot longer.
The call had ended with Yuki looking at Mitsuoki and informing him that they needed to wait for them to be told it was okay to continue. Mitsuoki nodded and pulled out the next scroll to begin revising it in his mind. A few seconds had passed before he was unhappy with silence between the two of them, and he said "You asked me something earlier, about the others from my district." He would pause for a moment while looking at her with that cold, emotionless, arrogant stare of his. "It was likely said in rhetoric, so I will address the reason behind your saying it at all. There is a specific name that I have been called that irritates me to no end. The use of suffixes reminds me of that name, so I prefer to be addressed informally. But to answer your question without rhetoric, yes, everyone addresses each other informally. Many parts of the Rukongai are devoid of any help from the soul reapers beyond killing the occasional hollow. There are many of us, myself included, who become a soul reaper because it's the only way to not randomly faint in the middle of potentially dangerous places. Children steal for food, water, and sport- making the adults miserable when trying to recuperate their losses. With everyone doing their best to barely survive, we have no time for formalities. With that said, I have no qualms with those fortunate enough to be of noble birth, or get adopted by a noble. We do not choose where our roots take hold, we merely accept the soil and find a way to grow in it."
Yuki pursed her lips and moved her mouth from side to side, as a silence overcame them. Mitsuoki was the first to break the silence between them, keen it seemed, to impart more of his life story. He kept staring at her as if he didn't have a soul. She found it kind of unsettling at how moody and edgy he was acting. It kind of reminded her a little of Eiji except he was nowhere near as good-natured as her brother. He told her that people called him a name that he hated and got wound up by. She regarded him flatly, looking to the side coyly before daring to ask.
"So what's your nickname that you hate then gaijin-boy?" she asked in a low, sly voice. Then he engaged in a kind of reasons-you-suck speech about how terrible life in the rukon districts was, and how shinigami didn't do anything to help. Yuki just yawned. She knew Eiji spent a bunch of time policing the rukon, defeating hollows when they appeared there, taking out lawless bandits where possible. But there were only 6000 or so shinigami, and millions if not billions of people living in the Rukon districts. It was impossible indeed to police a whole world. The humans in the real world seemed to do a grand job of it. In reality it was the fault of the peasants in the Rukon in that they had filed to organize and govern themselves as the Shinigami had been able to do. Her denreishinki buzzed with a text before she could answer.
"Okay," she said, reading the text, "look at scroll four... Kurohitame. Now to unlock this one, we'll have to alternate enchantments, starting with mine, does that make sense? Okay you can go ahead and start; I'll follow along." she said, suddenly all business.
Mitsuoki was instructed to look at the fourth scroll after they were given the go ahead to continue with the mission. "Kuro... hitame." Mitsuoki repeated the name, separated into its base words, after Yuki had given him his instructions. He opened the scroll that was labeled accordingly and began reading over the words carefully. Granted, he could use the kido while reading the scroll, he liked to have a bit of an idea what he was going to say, before he said it. For all he knew, some prankster could've written obscenities in the scroll so some poor sucker would accidentally say it while casting the incantation. Mitsuoki was about was about to begin mouthing the incantation to familiarize himself with it, but his eyes suddenly turned pure white with a black outline, and a bit of steam coming out the top of his head due to a computation error. His eyes quickly returned to normal and he turned his gaze to Yuki. "Yuki, you said that we must alternate our incantations, starting with yours; but, then you told me to start. Would you mind clarifying whose incantation will be starting this, please?" He wasn't sure if she was testing to see if he were paying attention, so Mitsuoki thought it would be best to ask rather than risk a possibly explosive backfire.
Once the clarification was made, Mitsuoki would prepare himself for the incantation. If he were told to start it, then he would take the lead. If it was clarified that Yuki was the one to start, he would willingly follow her. This time, Mitsuoki wouldn't need over elevent attempts, but rather just the one; but, he would be a little more tired afterwards. It would be his first time officially using that particular kido, so his body wasn't used to it. If Yuki expressed any concern, or asked if he would be alright, Mitsuoki would say "I'm fine... thank you." in between breaths.
After Yuki called in the successful sequence, Mitsuoki would say "Not wishing to overstep my position, I wish to understand you, Yuki. What was it like growing up for you?" If Yuki had answered and explained that she joined the Kido Corps out of duty, then Mitsuoki would say "I wish to ask a more personal query, your answer will remain a secret that I take to the grave... Did you always want to join the kidoshu, or did you have other dreams?"
↜Path A↝
If Yuki told Mitsuoki that she did have another dream before being told she was to join the Kidoshu, he would then say "Thank you. Not wishing to cause offense, I would like to ask one more personal query. Do you regret not following that path?" Regardless of Yuki's answer, Mitsuoki would say "I see, thank you. If I may request it, I would like these questions to remain off the record."
↜Path B↝
If Yuki told Mitsuoki that she didn't want to answer, that she never had any other aspirations, or scolded him for asking such a thing, Mitsuoki would perform a very formal bow. He wouldn't prostrate himself, but his bow would be more exaggerated than a common greeting "I apologize for my imprudence. My curiosity got the better of me, I will adjust for the future." he would say in a more robotic tone, as though it were something that he'd rehearsed, or been forced to say on more than one occasion.
"N-n- nani!?!? I didn't s-say anything like that ya goof!" She said, realizing her mistake and flushing bright red, stomping violently on the floor with her hands balled up into little fists at her waist. "A- Are you some kinda moron, huh buddy??" she asked him, before double-checking her own scroll, realizing that she had in fact got the order mixed up. "Of course I'm meant to go first again j- just like last time." she said, before furiously incanting. Having said that his look of confusion had been pretty damn funny.
After they were done, he looked pretty done in for. Yuki looked at him with a singular raised eyebrow. These sealing kido weren't too hard, maybe he was overthinking it a little. Well- they weren't too hard for shinigami in the Kido Corps, at least. Yuki had read his file. He was good enough. She didn't want to come across too much as if she cared, but it'd be easier for both of them if he acquired a little more skill in doing this, she guessed.
"You may be fine now," she told him when he assured her he was okay following her look, "but we have another couple of these to do. I'm not sure what you're struggling with but remember- the energy for these seals comes from long ago. We're not really un-doing them, just turning them on and off. You don't have to undo the whole seal by yourself, hell it shouldn't really take any reiryoku. Yeah I guess they require a little concentration, but it seems like you're applying your reiatsu in these incantations like a normal kido. Anyways that might not be the problem. And I don't really care. I just can't be bothered to carry you back to the Kido Corps if you collapse from exertion, as all." she told him with a short harrumph.
The two of them had been successful however, and she sent off a text to Junta to let him know. Now they waited again. Mitsuoki seemed to be some weird guy who was somehow really formal at the same time as being really informal. So he wanted her to call him like she would an old friend or intimate lover, yet also here he was talking about prudence and all that. Like a yo-yo! Yuki couldn't really understand such things.
"W-what!? Such a personal question! I grew up with my twin brother Eiji-kun. On the Hirashi estate of course. I was queen of the neighbourhood and lord of all the other kids, even the ones who were technically from higher ranked noble houses than mine." as she said this, she would appear as a giant figure cast in shadow, with a wicked sharp grin, terrorizing the neighbourhood children. "Of course Eiji-kun was always the one who was quiet and calm and soft spoken... Like a damn librarian. So no-one, me included, ever expected me to be in the Kido Corps. Of course I ended up coming here, since I was so good at kido, it was my duty!" she told him, triumphantly. His follow-up question though seemed rather silly. What!? Did she always want to...
"Baka! I already told you just now that I never knew I'd end up here, so how could I always have wanted to! That makes no sense!" she told him, her head large, and her teeth sharp as she admonished him sharply for his silliness. However, rapidly calming down she considered his question seriously. Had she had other dreams? Yuki wouldn't necessarily have thought about coming to the Kido Corps had her skill with kido not been so good, however, it wasn't as though she had thought about going elsewhere. Having said that, part of her had always wanted the fame that came with being a seated officer in the thirteen court guard squads as an officer. Instead of toiling away in relative obscurity here in the Kido Corps.
"Well everyone wants to be a famous captain like Kuchiki-dono, or Ukitake-dono, or... To- Toshiro-chan..." she said, hands clasped together, and eyes glistening as she thought of the little white haired taicho. So cool! So cute! So clever! That was three c words!! At the thought of each of them, Yuki threw a dramatic, heartbroken pose that she could not be close to Shiro-chan, who was by far the cutest in the Seireitei. "But even if I can't be with Toshiro-chan, it's my own personal philosophy that it would be stupid to have regrets about your own life!" she told him with a big thumb extended. His response to that question would confuse and anger her too.
"N- n- n- NANDAI!?" This time her form would be totally silhouetted, lines of anger wafting from her body though her voice was quiet and shaky, hiding an unyielding rage. "I don't understand, do you think I'm stupid?? Would I choose to have regrets, even if my own personal philosophy says that such a thing would be stupid?? This... DO YOU THINK SOMEONE YOU JUST MET WOULD REALLY SHOW THAT KIND OF HYPOCRISY!?" she asked, before deflating to the floor, defeated by the bizarre and nonsensical questions he was asking her.
"Either way... These questions should stay off the record, that's important, you know." The next thing he said would be the final straw, nonetheless. He asked... Her... If... The... Questions could... Stay off the record?
...
Yuki blinked, long and slow.
"Are you... Learning disabl-" before she could finish her question however, Nishikwa-san rung through. "Next set, scroll seven the one that says 'Dokugamine' at the top! You go first, you gotta keep enchanging and repeating, while I unlock the next set of seals. Nearly done now!" she told him, with a thumbs up.
Yuki's bit of information on her childhood had given Mitsuoki the impression that she was more closely related to a playground bully than a noble's daughter. Either that, or there was some reason why all the other children bowed to her every whim. It was also revealed that she was originally not expected to join the Kido Corps, which Mitsuoki found to be quite interesting. Normally, a noble's life was decided for him and revolved around them serving a singular purpose. It would seem that Mitsuoki wasn't the only black sheep in the Kido Corps. That bit of knowledge made him feel slightly less lonely than normal.
Her reaction to Mitsuoki asking if she had any prior ambitions to the kido corps was kicked off by calling him an idiot, which he took partial offense to, but not total offense. She had told Mitsuoki that it was obvious that she didn't always want to be part of the kidoshu, justifying it by the face that she never knew she'd end up there. For Mitsuoki, he thought that it would have been one of those 'I never thought I would be here, but I did enjoy using kido' sort of deals. Another lesson for the future, another reason to never judge a book by its cover.
She transitioned to tell Mitsuoki about how everyone wanted to be as famous as Byakuya, Jushiro and Toshiro. Her actions while speaking of the small, white haired one were strange, making it obvious that she had some form of attraction to him. From what Mitsuoki had heard of the boy, he was a prodigy of a soul reaper. He passed the academy with flying colors and managed to get a zanpakuto that was incredibly rare, only showing up a few times since the organization's founding. Some allegations he'd heard, but never had the chance to confirm, were that he had a bit of a napoleon complex. He didn't really think on that stuff too much, though.
Mitsuoki wanted to tell her that he's never once wanted to be a captain, but that would also mean that he would possibly reveal that he never wanted to be in the Kido Corps, and had only joined because he promised someone. That would lead to a long conversation about who that someone was, what happened to them, and why he's still present- which would be touching on topics that he felt were much too personal. More specifically, he didn't want anyone to pity him or give him undue flack for it. So, he kept his mouth shut and left his hands away from that can of nuclear worms.
She was beginning to throw another insult at him, but was cut off by their superior ringing. Mitsuoki would have to find out who this person with impeccable timing was and give them a present. He'd likely forget to do it by the end of the day and never remember, but at least the thought was there for the moment. The task for this seal was to continuously chant while Yuki worked on unlocking the next seal. He pulled out the seventh scroll and began reading over the chant a time so he could get a general knowledge of what he was doing. She had told him that he was just turning the seals on and off again, and that it wasn't like common kido where he needed to use his own reiatsu for the casting. That was probably something he was taught, but it was so long since the knowledge was applied that he would've forgotten. He took his position in the circle and looked to check if Yuki was ready to begin. Once he was given any reason to think she was ready, either audibly said or some other reason, he would begin his chant. He'd continue working the seal until Yuki had finished her end, after which, he would stop. He would appear less effected this time around, once complete.
While waiting for the call for the next set, Mitsuoki wouldn't say anything at all, but instead, pull out the scroll from inside his robes and begin reading it over again with a fairly focused look about him. Yuki had only seem to be getting slightly irritated with him from his last set of questions, so he didn't want to push her any further.
As soon as he started enchanting, Yuki went though, one by one, unlocking the various seals until the set was done, before signalling for him to cut it out. Not that it mattered if he kept going, but she simply found it annoying for him to be repeating the same incantation when he didn't need to be. One day maybe she'd get a promotion to a rank where she didn't need to do this at all, but that day was not today, she still had somewhat of a long way to go.
"Hmm, was that any easier?" Yuki asked him. Of course, her guidance would be excellent, nothing short of it. But if he had developed some new, other difficulty it would make sense for her to help him out because if she didn't then he'd pass out and she'd have to carry him back. "That seemed better than before though." she congratulated him with a stern face, not wanting to get too buddy-buddy. She guessed maybe it was time for her to do some questioning.
"Sooo Mr. Rukongai, you still never told me that nickname. Is it something they called you in the districts? You came from sixty eight, huh? That's kind of a shithole, huh, you got pretty good manners to be a guy from around about there. I guess you were a human in the World Of The Living before that werencha? Bet you miss your family, right?" she asked him, not really knowing or caring if she was being impolite or prying, she was just a bit of a chatterbox. Mitsuoki might be a weird gaijin but at least he wasn't a dumb nerd.
Mitsuoki hadn't cared to bring up the fact that Yuki had told her he needed to continuously repeat when she having him stop, he figured that he had repeated the incantation enough times that it would linger, or something to that effect. She had asked him if it was easier, and he told her that it was, to an extent. Yuki had given him a form of compliment by saying that it seemed better than before, delivered with a fairly serious expression. Afterwards, while he was reading his scroll, she had addressed Mitsuoki by the name 'Mr. Rukongai' as a potentially small joke. She had brought up the fact that he never told her the nickname he hated so much, and at the mention of that, his eyebrow twitched with a small vein bulge appearing on his temple. She quickly transitioned to asking if it was something he was called back in his non-soul reaper days. She mentioned that he came from sixty eight before insulting it and pointed out that he's unusually polite for someone from a trashy place. She asked if he missed his family from when he was human before finally stopping her barrage of rhetorical questions.
Mitsuoki let out a breath of air to force himself to relax before saying "I'll not give 'that name' the dignity of coming from my lips. If it's honestly that important, you may ask anyone who already knows. As for my family..." Mitsuoki's eyes slightly narrowed and for a brief second, he looked sad. His expression returned to being calm and elegantly arrogant before he said "I don't miss them in the slightest." While his tone was level through the entirety of that, it was, for the most part, a lie. He didn't know who they were, and he wanted to know, but he had other priorities to take care of.
Eh? How was Yuki supposed to know someone who knew his nickname? Ahh he was being so serious! She guessed this guy was a guy who felt serious deep down emotions... Not that she didn't, but gosh why did he have to take everything so serious all of the time. She frowned to herself. At least he had relaxed a little now. That was short lived; Mitsuoki regained his serious demeanor as he told her he didn't miss his family one iota. That was pretty serious too! Not at all! Had they been abusive? Yuki frowned. She was about to inquire further, but she got a call from Junta-san.
"Eh, last one? Sure. Why are you calling though? Suddenly missed the creamy smooth caramel of my voic-"
"..."
"You... You don't know how to spell it?? Do you not have it written down!? Someone else told you! Well which damn scroll is it? Moron." Yuki hung up the phone. So now she had to read the damn scrolls. She looked through the scrolls until she found the one that they needed. "You're looking for the scroll with Kodai Tatsuyama no shibari written at the top. I think this one we have to do at exactly the same time okay? So we'll do it on three. As in one two three and we go on three. Or should I say go and then go on go? No we'll just go on three it's much simpler that way. You got that? Go on three, not on go." she told him, throwing a thumbs up. Only an idiot would misunderstand Yuki's absolutely superb directions!
Watching Yuki talk on the phone, Mitsuoki had found it funny how the two individuals had balanced each other. She was extremely expressive, and he showed virtually no emotion at all. She was a noble who spoke in a fairly bumpkin-ish dialect, and he was a commoner who spoke very properly. He was sure that there were other ways that they were exact opposites of each other, but he wasn't particularly concerned with uncovering them. "How strange." he said under his breath just before she got off the phone with their orders to move on to the next set. They had to perform the incantation at the exact same time, and would begin on Yuki's count of three. Yuki counted to three and the moment she finished saying the last number, Mitsuoki began chanting along with her to get the last seal done.
With that bit of work done, Mitsuoki found himself a bit more curious about Yuki in the strangest of ways. It might be that he didn't have breakfast, or because he naturally had a sweet tooth. He was never one to shy away from asking a question, if he had one. So, the only logical thing to do was say "Yuki, I have another question I'd like to ask..." The tone of his voice would imply that it was a reasonable question. "What is your favorite ice cream flavor?"
"Hey, that was pretty good. For someone who isn't very good at kido, you did okay!" Yuki told him with encouragement. Had he told her he wasn't good at kido? Or had she just guessed that from the fact that he seemed to bad at kido. It was entirely possible Yuki had made a huge faux pas just now, but Mitsuoki had, thus far, been so reserved and passive that she guessed that he wouldn't really say or do anything even if he was a bit offended. Regardless, she had complimented him at the same time as she had insulted him, so that would surely balance it out, right?
Then of course was the matter of his continued strangeness. What kind of icecream? Yuki wasn't a kid, she didn't eat ice cream! Unless... Was this his version of trying to make a move!? The two of them had been here for a while chatting and casting spells, what a lecherous person to assume she'd want to go on a date with him just cause they were colleagues.
"Whaaaaaat!? You're trying to ask me for ice cream or something! Gaaah, so inappropriate!! It's blackberry, like my hair, in case you want to buy me a gift, however." she told him haughtily, folding her arms. She got a text, all of a sudden, her phone buzzing. They were done? The seals were sorted, they would send in a team to run diagnostics...
"Well, Mitsu, we're done now." Yuki told him, hands on her hips. "How did that feel? Don't worry about feeling too inadequate, many people do when faced with a witch of such extraordinary power and beauty such as myself." she said, eyebrows raised in a villain arch. "I can take those scrolls back, if you want?" she offered.
The compliment had mostly gone over Mitsuoki's head, and the insult had entirely gone over his head. For him, there was a certain bar that he needed to hit before he can compliment himself... that bar was Haruka. She was a prodigy when it came to kido, able to make her own spells and learn new ones just as easily. Her only limitation for kido was her low reiatsu, which prevented her from practicing extensively. Mitsuoki had tons of energy and could take a hit, but he was far from her level; so, in his mind, he was sub-par, and that was being generous. Of course, to others, he was actually pretty average or even better than average- it was a conflict of expectations and reality.
Yuki's response to him asking her preferred ice cream flavor had been met with a stark misinterpretation, with her overreacting. Mitsuoki was finding it somewhat charming, however, that she could not only misconstrue a simple query, but feel completely fine with being so obvious about it. He looked at her with a mostly blank expression, no different than any other normal moment of them working together, and let her keep going to see if her reaction would escalate. She had brought herself down to a normal-ish level and told him that she liked blackberry, which was a strange flavor, indeed. Mitsuoki was more of a coconut person himself, black and white, another way they differed. He could tell that they opposed each other in just about every way, and would likely only make an acceptable team if he kept his mouth shut as much as possible.
She had called Mitsuoki by a new name, one that made him raise an eyebrow at her, again. "Mitsu...?" he questioned, under his breath while she continued talking. She had taken a shot at preventing him from downplaying his own skill, while simultaneously overestimating her own looks and skill. It was a matter of opinion, not worth him stating that she looked somewhat average, in his opinion. Then again, his opinion was extremely skewed. She offered to take back the scrolls, and Mitsuoki gently handed them over. He said "Thank you, Yuki. Your help has been invaluable, today." in a calm tone. After giving her them, he turned away to face the direction of the prison, taking a step before pausing. "... I was not ordered to return after completing my task." he said softly while looking straight ahead. "I suppose this means I have the rest of the day off... Maybe I should train?" he muttered before continuing his path to the seireitei.

Yuki's new nickname for Mitsuoki hadn't come from any conscious place- it was merely a reflection of her slight laziness. Turtles were pretty slow, and as a result a turtle like her didn't have time to say out a whole name. His name was double the length of hers; twice as many syllables. Nonetheless, Yuki didn't even hear his questioning of her contraction and so ignored it. She was happy to take the scrolls and simply go back until he said something which made her twitch, wincing as though his words had physically harmed her.
"My... Help!?" she asked, her eyes narrowed. "HEY BUDDY YOU WERE THE ONE HELPING ME DON'T GIVE ME THAT 'THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP' CRAAAaaaaaAAAAAaaaaaaaAAAAAAP!" she yelled, attempting to bonk him on the head with a scroll. After that he mumbled something about wanting to train and not having to return, which Yuki grit her teeth at. Sure, he was going to go off and train somewhere, leaving Yuki to return to the Kido Corps' Shiro and probably get assigned more gopher duties.
"Hey we have a job to do ya know buster!" she called after him before, with a disgruntled "harrumph", she proceeded to flash step away, back towards the Kido Corps headquarters, where she'd find some nook or cranny to hide in so she didn't get assigned any more duties with any more weirdos. Of course she'd have to report back to Blodeuwen about Mitsuoki's suitability for promotion. Yeesh.
