An order to help with opening the senkaimon had come in, meaning that Mitsuoki got to escape his job as a lowly prison guard and resume his assigned job as a member of the kido corps. It was just one of many trivial and seemingly arbitrary tasks that his unit was in charge of. One could accurately state that Mitsuoki had an issue in understanding many things, one of which was the reason why the senkaimon required a specific unit to open. It was a giant door that lead to the world of the living, connected by a stretch of land that was almost as dangerous as hueco mundo. The fact that the kido corps was needed just to open a door was mind boggoling. For Mitsuoki, it wasn't particularly hard to do. A little bit of kido mixed in with a few long hand gestures, performed by a couple extra members of the kido corps, and the doors were open. By his estimate, his captain, or any other captain for that matter, could easily open it on their own. The process of getting back was more complicated since a soul reaper had to summon the doors from the world of the living to return, which was, in Mitsuoki's mind, much more daunting. Of course, one could argue that Mitsuoki's viewpoint was scued, since he had been opening the senkaimon for over a year, now; and, as a direct result, the process had become second nature.
His orders had quickly changed from assisting with opening the senkaimon, to assisting with a mission in the world of the living; which mean going through the senkaimon. It was extremely rare for members of the kido corps to go to the world of the living; rare as in, it almost never happened in any given century. Mitsuoki had inquired as to why he was being sent there and was informed that a soul reaper had been dispatched prior to his reassigning to deal with a pair of hollow. Things had gone awry, leaving the soul reaper requesting back up. The one who Mitsuoki was opening the gate for was on the way to a different assignment. The line of thinking that was present was, since Mitsuoki had enough experience dealing with hollow, and he was already on his way there, it would be more efficient to have him go in and bail his comrade out. When told this, Mitsuoki had corrected the individual and clarified that no one in the thirteen court guard squads are his 'comrades.' He isn't friends with any of them, he simply works for the same organization that they do. While his messager didn't particularly appreciate being demoted from comrade to work associate, he understood and accepted the demotion with grace and humility. Mitsuoki had told the messenger that he understood his orders and thanked the messenger for informing him.
Walking through the world between the soul society and world of the living was always strange. The walls seemed to be somewhat aqueous, liquid, and had ripples in them like the folds on a blanket, except those folds were a lot closer together and seemingly endless. The use of a hell butterfly was not up for negotiation, as much as Mitsuoki found the little insects to be annoying. The reason for that, was that if anyone tried passing through without one, they'd either get swallowed up by the walls, or get torn to little spiritual bits by the cleaner. Both options were unfavorable to Mitsuoki, so he had to bear with the burden of having a little, glowing insect fluttering about behind him. While passing through with a fully recognized, proper member of the thirteen court guard squads, Mitsuoki had to endure the man constantly trying to make conversation with him. He didn't care about the guy's dislike of doing chores, or the fact that he was training to become a seated officer, or even the fact that the guy liked chocolate milk. In fact, Mitsuoki cared even less about that last one since it was a completely arbitrary, pointless, even trivial bit of knowledge. "Look, we both have a mission to complete. You should spend this time planning ahead, just in case things don't go as smooth as you'd like them to." he said as a means of killing the conversation.
Exiting the senkaimon, Mitsuoki looked over the surrounding area with the same cold, apathetic, and elegant gaze that he always had. He used shunpo to vanish from his current position and take up a now spot atop a large building, where he could look over the area and get a better idea as to what was going on. There was no hint of the hollow at all, and he couldn't see anything in the way of context clues that would help him know where the battle was taking place. "Well, I guess I'll just walk around a bit." he said to himself in a tone that implied that not being able to do his assignment and having to default to roaming the streets and looking at stuff was a burden, while also implying that, that tone was one hundred percent pure sarcasm. He used shunpo once more to vanish from the building's rooftop and reappear at its base, among a fair sized crowd of humans who began moving around him, though, not exactly knowing why they were doing that. No one was even aware of the fact that they were avoiding the place where he was. It reminded Mitsuoki of the fact that he would never be able to understand humans. 'They move around me, but pay no attention to the fact that their instincts are making them avoid an empty pocket of space. Why is it that humans are so complacent?' he thought before beginning to move along, heading to the town's market district.
Mitsuoki had passed a playground with a group of children in it, all yelling and screaming, laughing and having fun. 'Did I ever do this?' he thought to himself, remembering that he was dead, which means that at some point, he was alive- as a human. His eyes locked on, to a specific young lad who was standing at the edge of the playground, near the benches where the adults were. He was next to a middle aged woman who had a sad look on her face as she watched the other children. Inspecting the boy closer, he noticed a hole in his chest with a chain sticking out of it and understood. The boy had died, and the woman was likely his mother, who was still grieving. Mitsuoki had approached the boy and asked "Is this your mother?" in a calm tone. Startled by the fact that he was seen by someone, the boy turned around while also falling on his rear end. Mitsuoki looked down at him and asked "Do you know your situation?" in the same tone as before. The boy nodded slowly and put on a disheartened expression. "Are you death?" he asked Mitsuoki, to which the soul reaper replied "No." before pausing a second or two. "Death has already claimed you. I am a Soul Reaper, here to guide you to a place that's safe for you to stay until you are ready to be reincarnated into the next life."
The boy looked at Mitsuoki but said not a single word. He slowly got up and looked at his mother. "I asked before, is this your mother?" Mitsuoki asked, to which the child nodded. "Understand that the pain of our losses can never go away, just as a missing limb does not regrow. The wound will heal, she may even have a new son; but, she will never forget you. She will never be finished mourning your death, but she will find a way to continue living her life. If you are lucky, the two of you will find each other when she passes. You may even linger in the soul society to meet your younger sibling. But there is no point in lingering in this world, you will only feel pain and loneliness." Mitsuoki said. The boy turned to Mitsuoki and said that he was ready to go. He was fine with things if his mom had another son, but he didn't want to have to watch her be sad every day. He wanted to be waiting for her in heaven, that way, when she got there, he could introduce her to all his friends. Mitsuoki slowly drew his zanpakuto from its sheathe and the boy took a step back with a scared look on his face. "Do not be afraid. This blade is not for you." he said, reassuring the boy. He turned the blade so the bottom of the hilt was facing the child and gently pressed it to his forehead, leaving a light blue mark. The boy began glowing in the same color as the mark, soon turning to a mass of particles that floated away.
Mitsuoki watched the particles flowing away before he, himself turned and continued his casual stroll. He had heard of other soul reapers, the ones who frequent the world of the living, complaining about how much performing soul burials was boring, tedious, time consuming, and even a pain in the neck. Mitsuoki found the few he's done to be quite simple, often times just requiring that he assure the human soul that it was passing on to a better place before stamping them. Mitsuoki had made it only a few more steps before the sound of a hollow echoed through the air. A vein bulge appeared on his temple at the sound since it meant that his plans for looking at human world stuff had just been terminated. While there was probably another soul reaper in the area, he would catch quite a bit of flack if he were to just loaf around and avoid a hollow. "How troublesome." he said under his breath while looking in the direction of the hollow with a very apathetic look on his face. "I suppose I could dispose of it and come back. It's unlikely that anyone will suspect I was goofing off instead of locating the soul reaper that's in danger." Mitsuoki added to his train of thought.
Flash stepping from rooftop to rooftop, Mitsuoki went to the location where he was hearing the hollow's cry from. It took a few dozen steps before he was close enough to feel the hollow's spirit pressure, not because he was so far, but because it was so weak. More flash stepping. Flash stepping past homes that contained arbitrary and virtually worthless items. Past labor zones and work offices, full of people that did boring tasks just so they could have a place to sleep. People who went to sleep so they could have energy to go to work the next day. He flash stepped past schools, filled with human children, who were all learning the skills necessary to follow in their human parent's footsteps and join them in performing menial tasks to just barely survive. He kept going, leaping to the top of a bridge before stopping and looking around. Mitsuoki's eyes narrowed while he began focusing his senses on the spiritual pressure. It was so unbearably weak that he couldn't track it while moving. He caught the feel of it and vanished once more, moving past the cars and people traversing the bridge and getting closer to the hollow. His final flash step had put him directly in front of an incoming attack that seemed to be some form of energy based one. Mitsuoki put his hand out and the air in front of his hand shimmered just before the blast of red light hit an invisible wall.
The hollow that shot it was holding its hand up and narrowed its gaze on the spot where its attack was stopped, waiting for the dust around it to settle. When it did, it revealed Mitsuoki standing with his hand resting on the hilt of his still sheathed zanpakuto. His eyes were cold, emotionless, and contained a look that also implied that he thought that he was better than the hollow, better than the soul reaper at his back. The hollow was roughly human sized, shaped similar to a human, but had black skin and a fair amount of armor. It had a hole in its chest and its mask was unscathed, so it was obviously not an arrancar. "About damn time ya sho- wait a minute... You're that guy who's so useless, they made him a prison guard!" The soul reaper hollered with an annoyed look on his face. Mitsuoki turned his head and glanced towards the man, the look in his eye making the soul reaper cringe while backing up a step. Mitsuoki turned his gaze back to the hollow and said "I am Kumagai Mitsuoki. What is your name, hollow?" "What's it matter to you, soul reaper?" the hollow replied. "I make a point to know the names of all my opponents, hollow or otherwise. If I am to die, I wish to know my killer. If I am to emerge victorious, I want to remember, and honor, my fallen foe."
The hollow let out a slow, thought induced, groan that implied it was thinking. "I am Palagii Clae, the Vasto Lorde." the hollow said. Mitsuoki let out a sigh and forced himself not to scoff at the hollow. "You are far from a vasto lorde, mister Clae. Had you been one, I and my associate would both be on our knees, just from being this close to you." "Wait, you're tellin' me that thing's not-" "He has the form of a human, as well as the size- yes. However, his cero is weaker than that of a gillion." The hollow vanished from sight using a hollow's version of flash step, appearing near Mitsuoki with his claws extended to cut him. Mitsuoki replied by putting up the same barrier as before, and noting that the claws did nothing to it. "Excuse me, Mister Clae, but do you mind if I end this fight?" he asked in a respectful tone. The hollow paused its attack and let out a curious "Hmmm?" Mitsuoki's eyes locked with the hollow's, noting that the hollow was focusing deeply on him. Mitsuoki vanished using his sonido and appeared directly in front of the hollow, with two fingers pressed to its mask. "Hadō number 26, Hidenkō" he said, just before a blast of red lightning shot from his fingers, through the hollow's mask, and through the trees behind it for several meters.
The hollow vanished in a storm of black dust, leaving the other soul reaper speechless. Mitsuoki turned to face him and asked "Are you the one who called for back up around thirty minutes ago?" to which he replied "Y-yeah... Ummm, look- Sorry about-" Mitsuoki held his hand up and shook his head, signaling the man to stop his apology. "You weren't wrong, I was useless to the kido corps, so they had me take the place of a prison guard. You said nothing that was incorrect." Mitsuoki paused before saying "Continue your original assignment. I will remain in this world for a small time longer." The soul reaper nodded and began thanking Mitsuoki for his help, but the kido corps member had already vanished, using his flash step.
Mitsuoki had returned to the human's city to visit the market, just as he was going to do earlier, before the hollow called out. He was always curious about the world of the living, so he always took a little extra time to venture through the various markets and examining the bits at bobs they sold. Among the many items present, his eyes fell on a small, spherical object that seemed to be made of glass. It had a flower inside it, suspended in time. Mitsuoki used some kido to convert it to a spiritualized version for him to 'borrow' for the next few... hundred... centuries, or so. With his new paperweight in hand, Mitsuoki left to return to the spirit world.
