Sui Feng didn't trust Kisuke Urahara. Sui Feng did not like Kisuke Urahara. If it were up to her, she wouldn't be working with him at all. Even though Mistress Yoruichi trusted him, Sui Feng refused to. But for now, a back room in his place was where she had been given to perform this interview of recently recruited supplementary forces member Gage Mekhanik. Finding out what had happened in the human world was vital to understanding the number and strength of the enemy forces. He would be outside by now, waiting for her to beckon him in. She kept him waiting a little longer than necessary, a covert-ops psychological technique to unnerve their interviewees. She tapped her fingers on the desk.
The setup was simple. A wooden desk, a chair either side, and a bright lamp, shining ever so slightly towards the victim of the interrogation. Classic technique. "Ahh Sui-Feng-chan, your techniques of interrogation are puuuuurrrfect!" she could imagine Yoruichi saying which brought a menacing glower of delight to her face. Realizing she was getting a little over excited, she coughed to herself, before realizing that it was probably time to let the poor soul in.
"Enter." She barked forcefully, loud enough that Gage would hear it through the door. She would not ask twice. She remained stony and silent and still as he entered, and said nothing more than; "Sit."
Gage had heard stories of this captain, several remarking her 'ruthless' tactics and cold demeanor however nothing about how she was any form of poor judgement so he had no worries to speak of. His nerves did tend to twinge however. Not from meeting someone that was in the Gotie but more towards meeting someone new. He was sociable, friendly and outgoing but mostly he was forced, his own afternoons spent alone with his tinkering. Meeting someone was normally a requirement and with it came a hair of social anxiety. Sitting in the assistants office just outside he folded a small piece of paper that he had stolen from the desk. Working with his hands was a thing of habit, right now the only thing that keeps him from chewing the last of his fingernails off, something that he was trying to kick for some time.
The assistant, a heavy set man, continually shot him glances. Small looks with judging eyes, obviously unhappy with Gage's intrusion into his work space. Ignoring him he focuses on the small piece of paper, tending to the wings and little tuft of paper at the end of the tail simulating fire. Clearing his throat he sighs and crosses his leg, the outfit common for that of Soul Society but still unusual to him. Pants were basically the only thing that he had ever worn around people so wearing this robe like costume did nothing but distract him. Even his shoes...Can't wait to get out of this thing...
A call from inside the office signals his entrance. Looking back to the man Gage gives a small half grin. "Well its been great. Hope to do this again soon." Opening and closing the door behind him he see's her, a much shorter woman than he had expected. And young. Age here was deceptive however. The majority of Soul Society happened to be his elders save fore a few of the children and even then that was not always the case. Moving forward he takes the seat, the light shining rather intently on him. "Sorry," Gage covers his face for a moment before waving his hand at the light, a small spark of light jumping to the bulb to dim it to a more manageable level. "Bit bright. Nice to meet you. I'm Gage." His missing arm replaced with a mechanical one, hand covered with a glove so that it was not visible under the sleeve. Even so he gives a warm smile with friendly eyes.
Sui Feng was already overcome with ire at his blasé attitude. Being in the Urahara shop for this interview was already frustrating enough, so some mortal thinking he could come in as though he owned the place, when not even Sui Feng owned the place was bang out of order. She had to assert dominance here, so this human knew who and what he was dealing with. When he clicked his fingers to dim the bulb, a flash of anger overcame her, and her reiatsu surged into the lamp, making it glow even brighter than before.
"You will speak only when spoken to. You will answer only the questions asked. You will not." she paused for effect. "Attempt to alter the setting of this interview. Do you understand? Yes or no." Interviews; espionage interviews, that was, were about asserting who had the power in a given situation. Sui Feng would let Gage know that she held the cards here, and then he would give her the information that she wanted. "Recall that you are on the property of Urahara Kisuke, and that there are several high ranking members of the Onmitsukido stationed around. Your compliance is not only required for the purpose of our security- but your own."
Gage sat still for a moment. He was slightly shocked at the sudden aggressive tone and insulted behavior. "Oh, I'm sorry. I was told that this was a interview. I just had a bit of an interrogation vibe and it was a little disconcerting. Please continue," He wasn't phased by her comment on Urahara, a rather renown inventor as far as they go. However he was supprised by her comment of how he was supposedly supposed to concede to her orders for his own safety from her Onmitsukido, the small band of stealthy assassins out side that were trying their best to stay out of sight and out of mind.
"...Yes," Gage uncrossed his legs and watches quietly, waiting for her to continue. There was not much threat out here save for her, the others being a rather large pain in the neck. Together they would be dangerous but he couldn't help think at her words, the claim that his actions were for their 'security'. He had already been accepted into Soul Society and granted his own place in their ranks so what was the purpose of this rather intrusive interview. He could not think of the last time that he had been under such scrutiny. Save for that one time he was arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct in town after a rather heavy night of drinking.
Sui Feng grit her teeth. His attitude problem irked her. How could such a lowly human have so little respect for the chief officer of the Onmitsukidou!? He had a long way to go if he hoped to ascend the ranks of the shinigami; she had no doubt whatsoever that he would feel the heat if he dared speak to Yamamoto-sama with such a brazen attitude. This was an army that required all of its constituent parts to move, with no squeaks, like a well oiled machine. Discipline was the number one key thing that was required in order to succeed, and perform one's duties to their optimum. She was ashamed that the Gotei 13 had resorted to recruiting troops with such sloppiness. All the reiryoku in the world wouldn't help you if you didn't maintain utmost discipline; both in and out of combat. A part of that was respecting one's commanding officers.
"A brief time ago, a batallion of the Wandenreich was sent to the human world. Combat ensued. Can you tell me the exact size and nature of the invading force?" she barked. This was a crucial source of information; Gage could well hold the key to finding out what exactly was going on here. They had no idea that the Wandenreich might have attacked both the human world and Hueco Mundo simultaneously, alongside Soul Society itself. Sui Feng couldn't let the Captain-Commander down, she had been sent to the Human World to investigate this occurrence for a reason.
"The Quincy attack? Well there wasn't much to go on really. Since the attack I have been keeping eyes out around town to find out if there have been any measure of similar activity and I haven't found any yet. From what I was able to collect they attack a portion of the town focusing on collecting recruits. Or killing resistance." Gage thought back as the 'Soldat' had run about, grabbing anyone with a measure of spiritual energy and dragged them off, many of them vanishing into they own gates before he was able to intervein. He had done what he could but still even now he couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt for those that he couldn't get to in time. There was a great deal of blood shed, the majority of it being collateral damage but even so he couldn't imagine how much worse it would have been if he hadn't shown up.
"I did what I could at the time but one of them posed a serious threat," Gage lost all his playful mannerisms, the seriousness of the conversation sobering. "Naanaa I think he was called." Thinking back to the checkered toothed man he corrects himself. "Nanana. He called himself Nanana." His ability was dangerous, something that he inherited from their own 'Father'. "He used some kind of blessing power he got from his boss, analyzing and targeting weak spots in the reiatsu of his enemies and exploiting them. If I didn't travel with gear that had its own fuel sources he would have gotten the better of me. Not to mention the people in the area. We lost some five people, not counting casualties in the area." Gage's demeanor was now quiet, almost speaking in hushed tones and he continues. "I am just here to keep the human realm safe. You have people and resources to help make that happen. If that means that I have to kneel before your Captain then it seems like a small cost."
Sui Feng nodded sagely. He was an asset, and there at their mercy. Nonetheless the looseness of his tongue was useful for something; he relayed a great deal of information. So they'd been recruiting and killing. Hmm... Had they been doing the same in Hueco Mundo? Her pupils contracted; had they been recruiting there, and the arrancar and other forces still present had consented to join their ranks, that would be extremely problematic. Given the recent attack on Soul Society by the "Olympus" group who had since gone mysteriously quiet, she was aware that there were several Espada-level arrancar and other ingrates and traitors out there. She made a mental note to follow up on that, it was possible that by paying them a visit herself, she could help swing the tide of the war in their favour. The sternritter were threatening enough that despite her pride as a shinigami, ensuring that external forces weren't involved could be vital to their success. With the loss of three Taicho already...
Gage continued; so it seemed that he too had faced off against a Sternritter. His power sounded fairly formiddable. She grit her teeth; was he suggesting that a shinigami wouldn't have been able to deal with a threat themselves? She lowered her hackles as quickly as they had been raised though. Gage was an ally as much as Sui Feng hated to have to admit it. If the battle against Aizen and his Espada had taught her anything it was that help could come in many forms.
"What was the size of their force?" she repeated, gritting her teeth; when he had finished he hadn't actually answered one of her questions. "And what was the nature of the force opposing them, other than yourself?" Finding those who were able to combat the enemy was another key step in their reconaissance.
"Well, as far as I can tell the one I faced went by the Letter 'U'. If that's the case then they could have upwards of 26 different Captain Grade members. The one I met travelled with nearly thirty visible members of seated level relative strength but chances are that where ever they were being taken to had twice that many members so I reason they have a few hundred more members out of sight. The Fact they had some gate to their own realm means that they have some kind of home location, likely where who ever they work for is.
"As for the opposing force?" Gage looked down. He was calm and solemn. "There wasn't one. I found it by chance cause I was nearby. Everyone else that showed up to assist were appearing in singles, just finding us and helping off the streets. At most there wasn't more than three of us. There was no opposing force. Just me..." If he wasn't there to help stop or at least distract from the mayhem he couldn't imagine the repercussions. "Where was Soul Society? People were dying... by the dozen. I looked elsewhere, it was happening all over town. Where were you guys?" Gage locked eyes, finally being able to voice his worry about why the human world was left to fend for itself.
Sui Feng clenched her fist, her eyes narrowing in annoyance as Gage used his Basic Logic Level 1(tm) skill to deduce that there might be 26 enemy generals. It's... It's not worth it Sui Feng. She let out a slow breath, continuing to jot down relevant notes. She needed to stay calm and focused in order for her to get the most information. That got increasingly difficult, however, when Gage started to lay the blame for the attack at the feet of the shinigami. How could a human like him ever understand!? Shemet his gaze with an intense and cutting glare. How dare he insult the pride of the shinigami in such a way. He was so closed minded, all he considered was the human world, his own home. The shinigami were caretakers of all worlds.
"An attack of even greater magnitude took place upon the Seireitei." she said, her voice steady and quiet but angry. "And simultaneously in Hueco Mundo, the world of the hollows. Protecting the Seireitei... Is the most important duty for soul reapers. Without shinigami to maintain the balance between worlds, all of creation would be torn asunder. Humans lead short lives. You die every day in your droves... That is the way of the world." she said, simply.
Yes, it was basic information but it was what little information that he had. Rather than leave it to her to guess on her own he figured he would share it. He couldn't read minds, Sui-Feng's thoughts a mystery to him but he was able to pick up that she was getting agitated. A few more notes and a a retort that he was not expecting shook him for a moment. No one had told him that Soul Society was also attacked.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know. I knew that something had happened but no one had said anything about it to me." Something in her words bit his lip however. "And I am sorry that you lost people, just like we did. However please understand that just because we are human does not mean that our deaths are any less significant. When you die you are reincarnated. When we die we have the chance of going to Soul Society but there are those that can't, tramatic deaths keeping them bound to the earth until they become hollows. A loss is a loss on all sides. Not counting the fact that they were killed by quincy, meaning the soul is gone unless I am incorrect that Quincy destroy souls." Gage sits up in his chair, resting his elbows on his knees. "Who all did you lose?"
As far as Sui Feng was concerned she now had all of the information that she needed. There was nothing more, as far as she was aware, that she would be able to gleam from him. She wasn't particularly interested in paying lip service to this mouthy human. In fact ordinarily he would have had his throat cut by now, or else would have been disposed of in some other way. But he was a soldier, a mouthy one at that. There would be a Jigokucho going to his commanding officer informing them that they had a duty to keep their soldiers in line.
"A single life has no meaning in the face of one's duty to the world." she said with such an air of finality that it was obvious that she would accept no argument on the matter. She got brusquely to her feet, and strode towards the door, which she opened, indicating that it was time for Gage to leave. "It is not your business to ask who was lost. I'm feeling kind, Mekhanik-san and so I will give you some advice. The Gotei 13 is not some child's game of playing superhero. This is not a club for your friends. This is an army. Rigid discipline is required to succeed here, and a respect of the authorities that allow you to live is paramount." she gestured for him to exit, whereby she would close the door.
