Gage took in the little details. There were many many soldiers, several of them armed to the teeth and civilian and human Weaponry. The majority of their equipment was not even mildly concealable. Several assault rifles of various assortments along with side arms and additional equipment like handheld explosives. They were armed for a war. Who was Satoshi preparing for? Certainly there was no one out in Narukii City with this kind of Firepower rolling around on a daily basis. That was enough equipment on hand right now to reasonably assault a police station that was aware that they are coming. There were however a few Spiritual Beings in his group that were appearing to be unarmed. No equipment on hand and no sidearms they were obviously present for another reason.
Quincy as a whole were rare, enough so that to be traveling with one would draw attention. If not just a few questions. However to be traveling with more than one assumes that you have some form of supply of Quincy. It was a grim thought to consider, where Satoshi would have aligned himself to gain access to multiple Quincy at once. Pushing the thoght off for now though he Chuckles lightly at the unusually Stern driver suddenly forced to his knee under the spiritual pressure of Satoshi. Some nearby members of his group even stagger at the sudden bulge in energy. “That is the Satoshi I know. I knew that you were still in there. You're not want to hold a grudge but you're certainly not want to just let your people roam around doing whatever they want,” Gage laughs at the outlandish flourish as Satoshi spins on one foot to face him. “Yes well, what are you going to do? It’s not like they come pre trained anymore.” Gage was unsure how to breach the topic about his Newfound ability to leave his body behind. He had always known that so she had some tension between himself and soul Society however he didn’t want this to become something of a problem. Maybe he would reach it slowly and get a feel for what he thinks about it before he just outright says what is going on. “ well actually, it’s not that uncommon. It’s rare but you and I have seen it before. I have got to the point to where I can spiritualize my soul and leave behind my body. That means I can fight without damaging my physical body so ideally that means I won’t be unduly straining my body and theoretically shortening my life.” Gage grabs a pair of breadsticks and sets one down on his little plate before tearing the other one in half and starting in on it.
The militia-men outside has soon realized that people were starting to noticeably avoid the area because of their appearance. The Captain of the squadron had decided it best for them to relocate behind the building instead, and Satoshi couldn't help but agree. Privacy was nice, but he never liked a ghost-town. Wasted space.
"I've always hated that phrasing..'The person I knew'. It implies as if they've become a whole new person. Always seemed..An over-exaggeration to me." He shrugged.
The Vizard couldn't help but notice Mekhanic taking a brief moment to think about his answer on the leaving of his body. Folding the menu up and setting it aside, he took another sip of his water then rested his arms across the top of his bench-chair with a burp.
"I'm gettin' some Gyros." He proclaimed.
He popped his head without assistance from his hands, then popped it again on the other side.
"Actually, I've yet to meet a Human with the capability of removing himself from his body without a soul-pass, unless they were.."
He stabbed an olive out of the glass dish with a toothpick from the table, and casually slid it into his mouth from above.
Gage did not watch through the window or keep his eyes directly on the men as they moved about readjusting their security positions. He could send some though, even the Quincy, shining like bright Motes of light among the regular humans armed-to-the-teeth with weapons. " okay, maybe it is a bit of an exaggeration. But you do have to admit, you are acting a lot different from the last time I met you. Hell, the last time I met you I don't even think you were wearing human clothes. You were wearing a Shinigami outfit weren't you?" Gage flips through the menu, looking for something to eat. It all sounded delicious, at least it did phonetically. You can read any of it.
"Just go ahead and make that too, I don't know any of this stuff on the menu. I am not exactly a worldly guy so I never bothered to learn Greek." Cage closes his menu and sets it on the table, taking a long drink before continuing. "Yes, well Soul Society was running very dry. They needed help. There were several Quincy attacks by some outside force that were mauling people left and right." Gage reaches into his pocket and pulls out his substitute Soul Reaper badge. Setting it on the table he smiles. "They thought about it for a while and accepted me. I even have my own zanpakuto now. I haven't bonded with it yet though. I figure I could, imprint myself on the blade and and get what I can from it but before I do anything I just want to be sure that I'm ready."
A middle-aged couple walked in with 'tension' written on their forehead in bold.
"Welcome to Caesar's Bakery!" The front-desk guy said. He looked about 25, clad in a work uniform and one of those sun-visor hats with fancy "C.B" letters printed across the top. He was white and had a 5 o'clock shadow.
"Sit anywhere you'd like, guys. I'll be with you in just a second."
"Thanks." The husband said. Tan khakis and a red-vest with a white dress-shirt over a beer-gut; next to his slightly over-weight wife in a plain blue strapless dress.
They looked around until their eyes met Gage and Satoshi about 20 feet away from them. They chose the table farthest away from the pair, and sat down.
He gestured his face in an 'I guess' fashion and said
"Yeah..I suppose I was." And he took a sip; his face straightened as Gage's comment brought up memories he was trying to forget. Then chuckled.
"The last time you saw me I also wasn't in Gigai. Like I said, my Gigai has a suit in order to keep up with modern human standards. I believe they call it, 'blending in'." He said with a sassy undertone, meaning to be sarcastic.
"Every other time you've seen me it was out-of-gigai." He took another sip.
The waiter brought the food over, serving Satoshi first, and then Gage.
"Here you guy, fellas. Enjoy the Gyro's!" He said before walking over to the other couple to take their order.
"We'll take ours to go." The husband said quietly, making Satoshi chuckle internally.
A pause was in the air as Mekhanic spoke to him about his affairs with the Soul Society. Ready to eat, Satoshi unbuttoned his expensive suit and folded it neatly across the back of his seat--then rolled his sleeves up to his shoulders. His Gigai, unlike his real body, had no scars to tattoo his body with. He stared briefly in confusion before smiling to himself as he remembered he was in a Gigai.
Then his smile faded.
"You have a Zanpakuto, now..? A substitute-Soul reaper of the Soul Society."
He took another sip of his water.
"I suppose you know then, I'm wanted from the Soul Society for desertion, and I don't plan on coming in any time soon. Comes with the whole..'Vizard' card."
"But..Congratulations. I'm surprised they've accepted you as an ally, let-alone gave you an Asauchi and a soul-pass. Little tip, coming from a couple centuries worth of experience, power from your Zanpakuto comes from understanding it, and creating a bond. Kiyomemasu's name, translated, means "The Cleanser." He has an obsession with 'purity', and peoples will and reason to live. At first I thought this was a seperate entity entirely..But I've come to understand it's a part of me for a reason more then just to fight with me. To learn with, as well. My Zanpakuto is the only thing in this existance that I love. And it's not out of care or desire. It's out of respect, because in the end, that's how you win someone over."
He took a bite out of his gyro.
"If you want my advice..Sit, wait, and listen. If it doesn't speak to you, it's not ready to. Kiyomemasu hadn't spoken to me until I was in danger."
He burped.
"From myself." He proclaimed, referring to attempting to take his own life.
Gage couldn't help but laugh, the situation getting quickly out of hand. It was not that Satoshi was a bad guy, simply that he was a little awkward at times and it seems like this was one of those times. “Relax,” chuckling some more he waves towards the door. “I’m starving. You say this place is decent food? No pig intestines right? That's not a thing here? I have no idea what I'm talking about.”
Taking a seat at the table he was guided to gauge pulls the napkin down and lays it neatly across one of his legs. It seem like this might be a slightly nicer place to eat than he was used to. Then Satoshi does something that gauge couldn't help but expect. He asked about what is going on with his cryptic comment about life.
“Well, after all of the stuff that I have been doing around town it seems that Soul Society has taken enough notice in me to give me access To the soul Society world. I've also given me access to a couple more things like Kido and the such. Hopefully soon With a little bit more time I can sneak my way into a captain's position.”
The ease and comfortability Mekhanic continously showed toward his positioning at the Soul Society was beginning to grind his gears. For someone who had done rather well at independence from the Soul Society besides the whole 'losing an arm', he seemed rather optimistic about becoming a Captain of a squadron, and thus an arbiter of war all the same.
He lifted a napkin to his face and wiped forcefully, tossing it onto his plate as he finished the last few chomps and bites of his meal inside of his mouth. Washing it down with a glass of water had prompted a burp, followed by momentary silence from their tense conversation.
He cracked the tension with a metaphorical hammer of laughter.
"Haha, you make it sound like you've already got the job. Not sure what the exact procedure is, but I know it's gotta' be tough."
The waiter eyeballed the table for a few moments to determine their progress on the meals. He confirmed Satoshi's meal to be finished, quickly striding toward the bench and scooping up the dirty dishes into a wheelable pantry cart before wheeling back away.
He let his face rest on his hands against the table, eyeballing Gage while processing the information he's been given.
"Pft. Man, hard for me to picture the Naruki City bat-man as a seasoned Captain of the Gotei. That stuff is tough work. A lot of paperwork, and a lot of discipline. I don't know if I could do it.." He interupted himself with a chug of water.
"..That's why I have these humorous little things called attorneys. Apparently they're good at those sort of things." He stated in witty confirmation
"At least that's what some of my human-pals have told me in my spare time as a mob-boss." A joke from him couldn't help but strike a smile across his face as he sipped water.
Gage smiled at the comment on the difficulty of getting into the position of Captain, the difficulty normally being high. Normally. Gage was a hair beyond normal however. In a world of ants he was comparable to that of a titan in his eyes. There were few that could pose a real challenge to him and even fewer that made him feel like they were a real threat. That being the case when he sets his mind to a task and starts down the path little can slow him, even less being able to stop him. "Yeah well who else are they going to give it to? There are tons of applicants but if they were as good as me then I wouldn't have to be working with Soul Society. They could handle their own problems and I would just work here but desperate times call for desperate measures."
Satoshi made a good point, one that Gage had already considered once but he had come to a strong conclusion. If Kenpachi, a warmonger, was able to perform the duties as a captain with the assistance of his squad then certainly he was going to adapt just fine. He had his own assistants that would be able to ensure that he was handling his day to day life in the human world so if the Soul Society was making sure that they provided their own members to assist him with the work he would be fine. "Well if Kenpachi can make do with his squad I am sure I will manage. There are plenty of people in the squads to make sure the work gets done so I figure that I will do just fine. But enough about me. How have you been managing your own life after the quincy attacks?" Gage changed the topic, aware of how the subject seemed to be aggravating Satoshi for some reason.
[blockquote]Satoshi kept his gaze on Gage while he was speaking, making sure to appear as intent with his words as possible. Although, he couldn't necessarily agree with the statement about Kenpachi. Humans have limited experience with how that guy actually is.
He took a deep breathe, and exhaled.
"I suppose all of that's fair. Though.. Kenpachi is a lot smarter then he looks; don't let the brute personality sway you of that." A tone of matter-fact came across.
He stood still for a moment, his mind trailing off.
He cleared his through.
He took sat up and took out a black leather wallet, which he opened up to reveal an assorted variety of cards and money stuffed into it, as if he traveled to several countries in the same day.
All of this talking was entertaining, but he knew the time for friendliness had began to fade as soon as Gage had mentioned his Career in the Seiretei; combined with the fact that he inquired upon Satoshi a lot later then he expected about his lifestyle since the Quincy invasion--leading him to believe he already had a guess.
"My life has always been rather straight forward.." He stated openly.
Setting the money down, he leaned back into his seat with his arms across on either side.
"..So I suppose you can find a sort of irony in my present choices, as it were." He smiled passively, looking down for a brief moment in thought, then gazing back.
He raised his right arm from its rested position, and casually placed his index finger onto the table. Retaining his content smirk, he pressed into the table; small whispy streams and 'tentacles' of blue reishi and reiatus began whirling around his hand.
Gage took a deep breath, looking at Satoshi, a small pang of confusion quickly replaced by realization. Sighing he frowns, not sure what to say. "I guess that makes sense. You hate Soul Society as much as them. I would normally question your decision but...your minds made up. Obviously so." Rubbing his brow with one hand he realizes how absolutely far they had strayed from each other. Not too long ago they were once on the same island, ostracized from everyone with their neutrality but not anymore. "I never really saw this happening." Rubbing his eyes he pictures the future, Satoshi standing in front a pile of dead Shinigami, his blade in hand.
"You know that one day you and I are going to be face to face on the battlefield," Gage wipes his mouth with a napkin before leaning back. "I just never expected that you would be on the other side of it." Gage had been planning for another encounter with them, the Quincy posing a real threat to Soul Society and as much of one to the Human world and the people in it, but he had not prepared for something like this, the battle with the Reishi wielding spirits being long in the making.
He lifted his finger from the table, raising his arm back onto the chair to rest. As he expected, Gage already had an inkling on his position toward the Wandenreich. At the very least, he knew he wasn't going to stay allied with the Soul Society.
"I don't want to kill you, Gage. That's never been my intention from the start."
He brought his hands in front of them, and put them together, raising his eyesbrows.
"And I would heavily encourage you to question my decision, as it might provide you with some answers just as much as myself.."
His eyebrows lowered.
"And you're right about my mind being made up, but my decision isn't one based off of emotion anymore."
Although he could tell the way Gage looked at him was slightly different from before, Satoshi's gaze never changed. His content with the decision's that have been made was unwavering in this regard, because he knew very few people would understand his reasonings even if he had explained them. His eyes slowly veered away to out the window.
"It's gorgeous, Gage. The world"
He sat up from the table as the waiter collected their dishes and his money.
Gage frowned now. "You know that there is no going back after this. If I find you on the field and you stand to hurt someone I will not-I will not hesitate to stand there and stop you." Taking his napkin he begins to fold it over itself, neatly placing it to the side and setting his hands on the table, fingers interlaced as he leans forward. The mere thought of having to draw blades against Satoshi was something that he had not considered and the fact that he knew nothing of his release was upsetting. He did manage to get a bit of information on him though. He was a Vizard, he was skilled, tactful and most of all ruthless. If there was a chance that they were going to meet then he would have to be prepared.
"There was a time where I thought you and I would be on the same side, fighting the good fight and trying to accomplish the same goal. I didn't think that you would end up like this. Did they give you the ability to manipulate Reishi when you sided with them or did you learn it on your own?" Gage thought of his own skills, the Kido that he had picked up in days being effective if not time consuming. Reishi manipulation was a good skill, an asset to many quincy that he had fought along side over the years.
Nothing but interest was peaked in Satoshi as Gage had commented on what could not be mistaken for anything other then a threat. He'd never heard any kind of threats from Gage before, or at least none this aggressive. Though he did stutter--I suppose that's a sign of empathy.
He couldn't help but smile. He leaned forward, and spoke very carefully. "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy. The art of war is of vital importance to the state. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected. Of all those in the army close to the commander, none is more intimate than the secret agent; of all rewards none more liberal than those given to secret agents; of all matters none is more confidential than those relating to secret operations. Secret operations are essential in war; upon them the army relies to make its every move."
He leaned back up and walked over to the counter, picking up a news paper titled "Eye in the Sky: Naruki City"
"Wise words from Sun Tzu, a Human historian and philosopher from long ago..I have one goal. Killing innocents is not that goal, so the only reason I'd have to do such a thing is if your precious Soul Society tried to interfere with that goal, which has nothing to do with harming human nature and everything to do with preserving it." He spoke with a blunt and cold voice.
Opening a fridge, he grabbed a root-beer from the cooling system and tossed a 5 dollar bill from his pocket into the tip-jar.
"Believe it or not Gage, the people you are fighting for do not care about you or the Human race. Shinigami's are taught to kill hollows, and relieve souls. Interfering with Human life is actually strictly forbidden, unless absolutely necessary. Which they themselves deem when that is. What they care about is the cycle of life, rebirth, set forth by the Soul King; someone not even the C46 see or contact with. They've slaughtered two entire races in nothing short of genocide. Judge, jury, and executioner..So consider that, the next time you sit here and talk as if I'm treasonous to life itself. Consider that maybe, just maybe..You're wrong."
"I don't want to imagine a world where the Wandenreich have their way. I don't agree with what has happened to them in the past and it is a loss that the whole world felt but if for some reason they do win then what? They take over for the Soul Society? Do they relieve souls? Do they fight hollows and erase them? Then what happens with the balance that nature needs? Just let it slide off the table to deal with repercussion as they arrive?" Gage tapped his finger on the table, a slow methodical pace. "Don't know what your goal was but you threw in with the wrong team. Killing humans, at all, in any amount is giving up on the good in any cause you might have had. You are living through a necessary evil and what will keep you from becoming everything you hate? Your cause? Justifying the means through the end? Hardly seems like a good cause to me."
Gage had lost him, the lure of the Wandenreich being enough to set him down a treacherous path. Maybe he would find the light but if it was at the cost of human lives then it wasn't worth it. "Yes, I think its time I left." Pulling his phone out he dials for a cap, pinging a location several bocks up the street. "I think I will find my own ride though. I hope for both our sakes that we never meet under those circumstances." Standing up he takes a deep breath trying to shake off the disappointment of losing another to the Wandenreich. Turning he heads for the door, pocketing his phone and hoping to all gods in existance that they would have to never see each other again.
