Gage torqued down on the last bolt, the wrench creaking it into place. The last adjustments to his combat suit were almost complete, the repairs finally being finished. The last major fight he had gotten into left his suit with some major Dings And even larger dents. It took him forever to get to the sheared off bolts underneath some of the armor plating. He could have used his soul communication to pull them loose but he felt that this being one of his more personal projects it would be better to do it by hand, the type of work that these repairs would need tended to require more tactile adjustments. He even took the time to neatly repaint some of the Scorch marks and buff some of the larger plates of armor. His helmet, battered and dented, laying on the table nearby. He had taken a single heavy blow directly to the temple of his suit, the dent putting active pressure directly onto his head. While it was not enough to actually injured him it was definitely enough to give him a headache while he wore the suit. He would have to fix that next but first is lunch time.
Taking a step back and admiring his work he smiles, and it's been quite a while since the last time he actually repaired something by hand. Normally his work would be solely using Soul communication and simply drawing the material in such a way that he would like. This gave him a much more realistic sensation of accomplishment. The smallest of tickles on the back of his neck notifies him that something, something big, was nearby. He could not directly pin its location but it was definitely worth turning to face.
Every time you enter a Gigai, it feels like the last time you were just 10 pounds lighter and a foot shorter. Kokurai loosened his black necktie with a few grunts and heavy-handed yanks.
"Getting hot in that meat-suit?" A Gigai'd Jagdarmee commented as he walked behind him in a security-guard outfit.
Scoffing and chuckling, he reached for a pack of cigarettes inside of his blazer pocket. He looked up whilst taking out his lighter and peered toward the next block, lighting the stick in thought and putting it back in his pocket.
With a cloud of smoke, he voiced himself with a smile.
"Well I'll be, it seems we're near Mr.Mekhanic's Vigilante establishment." He peered at his two subordinates.
"Not entirely sure how he'll feet about you two, so don't say a damn word. Got it?"
They both nodded in simultaneous agreement.
"Sick." He stated, taking another puff of his cigarette. With a hand in his pocket, he proceeded down the street. Waving a few strangers and their neighbors, kicking a beach-ball back into a kids yard; he even stopped by a food-cart and picked up some of that awesome cuisine known as "Taco's".
Just a few minutes away, it was probably best to call ahead. He reached for his communications device and tapped away until it started ringing.
This phone started to ring, the caller ID showing someone that he had not spoken to in a long time. Satoshi. A shinigami that had come to so done work with him some time ago. Not unfriendly but certainly a bit of a socially awkward person. It was not that he was unable to interactwith people but that he came across so intensly. As if everything was of utmost importance and he had to convey that with all his attention.
"Hey there, haven't heard from you in a while. What's up?" Gage at least was always a relaxed person, the most serious he ever gets being when he is working on a project. Whenever you socializing though he always tends to be a lot more outgoing and friendly. Too many people in the world are hostile and he didn't feel like contributing to that nonsense.
The phone only rang once before his Fullbringer friend picked up the line with a speedy answer. Guess that means he knew, at some point in his way along to this block, he was coming.
Ha.
-Got to hand it to him, he was always the friendly type but he couldn't help but feel a sense of constant caution toward him, or anybody for that matter.
"Likewise, Mr.Mekhanic. Guess we've both been busy. I've been out of world for--oh..Business. As usual....
Anywho, tough guy! I was in the neighborhood and thought you could use the company. I'm sure you get strangled inside of that workshop of yours. And, you know, Im sure you could use a hand for a thing or two."
-He puffed another cloud of smoke into the air with a light smirk on his face at the comment.
Gage's complex was in sight at this point, only two houses away--he waved his hand to ensure they all slowed their pace for the time being.
"Last time I didn't get to meet lovely lady you so adore, either. I brought some company along, but I told my folks to wait outside until we're done out of respect for you. Unless of course, you don't mind. Though the multiple defense systems you keep around your property is a bit of a..Turn-off for them. Hahaha"
"Yes well too much to do and not enough time to do it. What are you doing off world, I can't imagine that there is much to do off world for gangs. Or cults, what ever you call yourselves." Gage hangs up his tools to their corresponding slots on his wall. Climbing out of his coveralls he grabs a rag and begins to wipe down his hands, oil from the lubrication system in the suit covering his hands. "Some company sounds good. I've been in here by myself for like two days."
"Yes, let me come out and meet you. There's too much of a pain in the ass to turn all this stuff off so that other people can come in. What do you feel like doing?" Grabbing his wallet steps out his garage and pulls the door down and locks it behind him. Walking out he looks out the street looking for @satoshi and who ever he happened to be traveling with.
The mention of "Too many" Weapons had made Satoshi chuckle at the Quincy with an eyebrow raised in their direction; which in turn caused an uncomfortable shift in both of them. Much to his own appreciation, Gage sounded more then willing to accept him and his subordinates into his property. And with the confirmation on the phone, he dealt back a mutual response of "Brilliant, chou." and let Gage hang up the line; slipping his communications device back into his brown suit.
The last time they had met, Satoshi had been quite different. Mentally of course, but his physical appearance would be much more apparent at introductions. A slender but fit build with short white hair was replaced by a man at least two inches taller, his brown-wool and cotton two-piece suit clung perfectly to a much more bulky body, draped to his lower back by his moonlight-silver hair--which had grown much longer in their time apart, and appeared more 'wild'. His facial structure seemed to have filled in more as well, as if he had gone through a second phase of puberty.
His eyes and mouth widened with expressed joy as he saw Gage step out of his home,
"Ah!~There he is!" He widened his lengthy arms for a bear-hug.
"Come here you fucker, bring it in."
The Quincy's in Gigai looked at each-other in a startled mix of shock and confusion at the display, one of them shrugged right after the other, and then both waited.
Gage made an awkward face, the last time he had met @satoshi he was not at all this...casual. it was odd seeing such a one eighty turn around on attitude. Offering his arms out into a friendly hug he laughs,"You certainly seem very chipper. What happened to you? You used to be so up tight. Now look at you." Gage steps back and gestures to the outfit. "You look like a compleatly different man." Gage couldn't help but sense the casual suave-ness that was compleatly contradictory to his original persona.
Gage himself was not unattractive, his appeal more of a hands on worker draw as opposed to Satoshi's business casual. Gage pulls out his phone and dials his assistant. If you could call her that. She was really more of a paid acquaintance than anything. "Hey. What are you up to?" Gage smiles at Satoshi and looks over the two companions that he had brought with him. Odd energy signatures that these two seemed to have. "I have a friend here and we are about to go get a bite to eat." Gate's face turned to an annoyed frown. "Well I was only offering if you wanted to get some too. Well we will be at Lazolli's. On 3rd and Simon. Well if you change your mind..." Gage just hangs up.
"Women. So, tell me what's been going on with you..."
He couldn't help but feel slightly insulted by Gage's remarks of his former-self, but playing it off sarcastically was smartest thing to do. Frustration over something so minor could throw their relationship out of a balance that was well established.
"Oo..Ow. Uptight?" He looked down at his suit
"This is just my Gigai, I always wore suits to look good in Human vessels. And, I DO look good, eh? HaHA!"
In his offtime, Satoshi came to a large realization about his split personalities. That in-fact only one of the three was an additional personality to his own body, while the third personality was actually a fragment of another persons soul, an old friend who was slaughtered in front of him. This fragment in his mind personifies death, and every time he sees death and deals with it, that fragment takes over.
As they hugged, there was no doubt Gage was close enough to sense a much more sinister presence then before, something much darker and denser. His new personality was bright and chipper, but it was also electrical and unpredictable. Two different sides of the same coin of destruction. If hollow energy was dark, this energy was completely black. And yet so black, it was blinding, like it emitted a light of utter death. But... it was deep. Very, very deep within. Like a small singularity ready to become the big-bang at any moment. And as soon as they let go of each-other..Poof. It was gone, and Satoshi was all smiles.
He threw his hand on Gage's shoulder and
"Oh, I assure you, we'll talk all about that. Preferably somewhere more private though, yeah? I've actually~"
He brought out his communications device and tapped a view buttons; the last tap emitting a loud "Ding" of approval.
"Got a rather large hand in Naruki City real-estate. A car will be here in 5, and I figure we can decide on our food choice along the way. Ever had greek?" He said with a vague smile and looked at his subordinates, who glared at him for a moment, one of them speaking up.
"Greek sounds great, boss."
"Great!" He said with satisfaction, then pointed at Gage with both hands.
"Really? When did you start investing in property?" It was a front. Gage could feel it. The ice cold chill of death and despair. It was like a bucket of water had been poured all over Satoshi and it clung to him like the freezing rain. Just like that though it was gone, the water and chill vanishing over a simple break in contact. It was malicious. Dark and hateful but at the same time it was nothing. It was like it was signaling death but not for its own want. Simply because the darkness must be. "Last time we met you were not so nearly interested in such mundane day to day things." Gage makes a bit more casual talk, peaking into the location and some of the near by points of interest.
"I love Greek. Well I think I do. Never had any. But I like food so it cant be that bad." Gage laughs, the pat on his shoulder sending a matching chill once more down his spine. There was however one more thing that was painfully obvious. Satoshi had grown. A great deal. When they last met Satoshi would have qualified as a third seat in Soul Society but now. He would without a doubt qualify as a Captain. Someone that could definitely challenge the thirteen squads. Maybe not defeat them out right but certainly hold his own. Just as Gage had not too long ago against Kenpachi, earning his own title in Soul Society.
-Strange..If he hasn't been keeping up to human life espionage, that means his recourses have been piled into something else. One might think Hollow killing, but he's a seasoned warrior even with only one biological appendage; he's formidable. To believe he's been doing something else in downtime, especially focusing on a problem that clearly isn't being solved quickly enough, would make him a fool. Especially with all the recourses he has just in survey and recon.
He cleared his throat, then spat onto the pavement in front of him-taking out another cigarette directly afterward.
"I've actually dabbled in it for quite some time.."
He chuckles and lights his cigarette, blowing it out.
"More of a euphemism, really. In truth I'm actually a sort of.. Politician. For the Black Market in Naruki City, that is. A while back the official lady lucrative herself, the Queen of Naruki, went MIA. And since she made it her personal goal as a Human to conquer this entire City and leave its infrastructure up to one singular fucking person..It all crashed. Thus, I couldn't help but step in. A Prince of Crime, you could say. It helps to have some human connections when wandering about. You can run into one and grab some Greek, haha."
-He laughed aloud, adjusting his tie.
"Yeah..But seriously..That greek? It's no joke. I'd lose an arm for it."
He laughed again and sent a firm pat into Gage's back.
"Fun fact! I discovered it was actually where I lived before I came into the Soul Society. Tastes like nostalgia incarnate to me. Mwcha" He ends with a stereotypical italian hand sign, putting his fingers to his lips and making a kissing sound.
"Justa-lika Ma-muh useded to make-uh." He took another puff of his cigarette
Three seperate cars rolled in. All of them were pitch-black, but two were Humvee's with white bolded letters which read, 'SECURITY' whilst the middle vehicle was a limo with tinted windows. The Quincy behind him stepped into either Humvee's, whilst a man in the limo stepped out and opened up the farthest door away from the cabin for them to climb in.
Strange it was but to Gage it made perfect sense. While he did know Satoshi he also knows that he was trust worthy and with the work he had on his mind he needed to do what he could to keep his attention on one thing at a time. That meant not pointlessly tailing those that he didn't feel like he needed to watch over. Satoshi was intelligent, driven and more importantly he was dedicated to the safety and survival of his job protecting humans. Of all people Gage didn't feel like he needed to watch over him and keep him out of trouble.
Satoshi pulls out another cigarette Gage snapping his finger and lighting the cigarette with a small just of spiritual energy. "Didn't take you much for politics. You seemed to be against the whole diplomatic things from the last time I saw you.
"Oh wait you mean...Oh damn I forget her name now but she and I did a lot of work. Helped her work on some personal projects in town a while ago. Unusually hands on for being a political head of her own faction. So then that means you are stepping up to take over?" Gage laughs lightly at the comment of him losing an arm. It was an odd topic to breach, the renewal of a missing limb.
"Yeah, I bet. I don't think that I would be willing to lose my arm. Again at least. This is my T.V. remote hand. Without it I cant do shit." Gage actually just stares at the odd man, commenting on his greek family. He didn't much care for outsiders inserting themselves into personal conversations. Certainly seemed to be out of character for Satoshi, traveling with lackeys. He seemed to be either above it or uninterested in it. What happened to him that changed him so much over such a small amount of time?
"Thank you for the ride. Seems like you are getting around quite nicely. Dig the wheels." Gage immediately recognized the armored vehicles, street legal versions of tanks essentially. Hundreds of thousands of dollars apiece.
The end of his cigarette spontaneously combused, and his eyes widened in surprise--not recalling even having an ability to do that, then looked at Gage and winked at him with a thankful grin.
"Much oh-bliged, partner." He said with a Southern accent, tipping his make-believe hat.
He took a few puffs, blew one out his nose, then blew the final one out in a large cloud out of the car window.
"I dislike tyranny, Gage. I dislike Tyranny. I run a free City, with 0 human trafficking and no tolerance for killing without code. Drugs will be around as long as humans are, so there's really no getting around that part of the law. I'm Ghandi by any means, no. I never said I disliked diplomacy. I dislike politics, because people lie. Everyone lies, including me. But never out of dark secrecy or espionage. I have nothing to fear. It's what others have learned to fear that I grow distate for in life." He said firmly and without pause.
He paused briefly only to take another large puff, the cigarette burning loudly as he inhaled with ferocity.
"There is a line of common sense not to cross when it comes to it, is all that is--really."
He takes another puff with less intensity.
"I took up the position quite a while ago. Naruki City has been under my control as of late. Hollow count is lower then it ever has been, we have specialists that hide large quantities of anomalies to avoid Hollows popping out near Naruki for a snack."
He laughs at his comment about the cars from earlier.
"Yeah, these? Funny thing..I never really drive by car. I was always fond of walking. I come and go as I please, and am able to project myself to them through my device you gave me. So the occasional chance they do get to escort the 'King' himself, they get all crazy and make bets on who gets to escort me. Flattering, really. But truth be told, I've never really cared for such humans enough to actually appreciate their admiration."
Gage chuckles lightly at the surprise from lighting the cigarette. It was not a lot but the small things were always the best things. "Well it certainly sounds like you are running things better than before. I knew that there were a lot of problems before, the trafficking and the drugs and all but you sound like you are cleaning it up. Can't say i care for the drugs but what can you do?" Plus in the dark side of the conversation there was a decent amount of money to be had. "Yes well there seems to be an unusual level of fear roaming the streets now. Murders and deaths from spiritual beings all around. Less in Naruki city than in Karakura town it seems though. There have been a lot of people rolling over Soul Society members like bulldozers. Blood has been shed and then even some Hollow Titans have been causing some ruckus. Too many times now people have been killed just from having walked down the streets at high noon. Hopefully though with a little help things will change very soon." Gage was speaking of his work with integrating with Soul Society. He wondered how Satoshi would take him getting a seat as a captain in Soul Society.
Extending his hand, the 2/3's smoked cigarette caught the wind-pressure from outside and flew off in the distance, sending sparks along the highway.
"I suppose I could always cut-back littering, too." He joked with a straight face.
Although he said he could never appreciate particular Humans' behaviour and their admiration for him, Gage was a human who's opinion he appreciated. Not many individuals ohave had rivaling battle experience and perspectives on life equal to that of a seasoned soul, especially a human in particular; one who's span of the world is particularly short.
"I'd put my own ban on drugs, except for the extraordinary realization that I came to had arrested that thought proceess. A large majority of the drug-industry runs the backbone of a large majority of other industries. Removing them would cause an infrastructural domino-effect of destruction. Ha..Put that on a t-shirt."
He rolls up the window.
"The unusual level of spiritual activity is in particular to the fact that there was a strange disappearance of said activity not a while back. These types of anomalies were not uncalled for, but in this level could only mean that--to my knowledge and experience--high reiryoku souls and humans are being highlighted by hollow attack energy. The fact the world is spitting out so many individuals with abilities only worries me about why it would do so. Not like it used to be, everyone that hadn't disappeared into their own hiding were always accounted for by the Soul Society, and activity was kept to a minimum because of the large amounts of reapers on-call. Nowadays the Soul Society sees a lot less members, and a lot more anomalies. The balance is switching..."
He raise a brow at his mention of 'a little help'.
"Not going to give it capital punishment though will you? I would hate to come pay you a visit over some trash bags on the side of the highway." Gage watches as the small embers quickly vanish on the street, quickly hidden from view as the flooding streetlights over power the small glint. "I won't pretend to care about the drug market. Anyone willing to buy drugs and kill themselves is running their lives the way that they want. You keep your city safe and you have my side on your back. Its good to some kind of progress towards a goal."
Gage smiled at the thought of something. "You know what? Wouldn't it be amazing if the world as a whole was spiking the number of spiritually active humans to compensate for the number of spiritual beings wandering the world? Like it is treating us as white blood cells and the spiritual wars wandering the world are a virus." Gage rubs his chin, thinking about what the implications of the world having a possible active defense to non-natural creatures. "Yeah, I have been working with a few people here and there, trying to bolster the number of people on the side of protecting humans.
"Trashbags..? On MY streets? Them's rumblin' words, pal." He said sarcastically.
He was curious, however. There were neither many Shinigami nor Hollows roaming the streets of Naruki this evening, and even Naruki retains the occasional blip. It made him weary to the things that lurked in the shadows, much like himself. It seemed fear was a two-way street, but it never really felt like it much.
"It's good to set an example for others, become idolized. Otherwise they don't have the proper inspiration in life to exceed those above them, I find--usually."
"I really wouldn't be surprised. Despite the inabiltiy to believe of his actual existence, the Soul King does things behind our Worlds' borders to keep them safe. Crafty fellow." He said with humor in his voice, speaking as if from memory.
As they approached the resteraunt, Satoshi re-tightened his tie; having loosened it previously, he hated restricting clothes. Mostly the Gigai, though.
"You're lucky you don't have to wear a Gigai in your lifetime, my friend. It's like possessing a suit of skin-tight chainmail, gripping down onto you like a vice. No wonder people have muscle tension issues."
He cleared his throat, spitting out the window. They were just about to enter the parking lot when Satoshi thought to himself for a moment, then broke the brief silence once more.
"Really? I was under the impression there is rarely anyone to 'work with' anymore in these times. "
"Well, a good old-fashioned Rumble is something I haven't had in a long time. Most people these days steer clear of me and my place." Jokingly Gage punches Satoshi in the shoulder, a playful gesture likely irregular in front of his lackies. While Gage also noticed the lack of spiritual activity he simply jumped it up to the effectiveness of Satoshi is group in the realm. Gage actually knew very little of the soul king. Slightly more then your average Shinigami but as a whole he knew little, at least a great deal less than he wanted to.
"Whenever it is that he does, it seems to be working out. If not struggling just to maintain balance. Could you imagine if he fell? All the worlds merging together? It would be the apocalypse. The dead would wander the Earth and the souls of the Fallen turning to monsters." As they pull into the parking lot Gage climbs out of the car and stretches. It was not a long ride but still it was right after a long days work.
Gage had never worn a gigai, the though of wearing a human body being one that he has a very difficult time grasping. Especially if you can feel it constricting you all the time. "Well for my sake lets hope that I dont have to wear one for a long time. I feel like I have a few more miles to go in this body so I'm going to run it dry."
As far as the comment on the few people to work with Gage could feel the seriousness of the topic changing. "Yes well Soul Society has been touching and going with me for some time but i have made some decent headway into getting and organized group in the human world to protect the places that are too spread out for me to reach."
Satoshi laughs awkwardly at the shoulder-punch, a type of display that he hasn't seen in quite a while. Most people seemed to have a stick up their ass for professionalism and to retain a cryptic vibe.
The driver in the front-seat peered back into the cabin when Gage playfully punched him, glaring directly at Gage, then looking back at the road.
Satoshi scoffs and rolls his eyes whilst whispering
"Don't mind him. Probably one of those duty-bound sods." He exclaimed, opening his door.
Satoshi's face tightened at the mention of the 'fall' of the Soul King, his whole posture changing into a intense and frustrated position of thought as he looked down at the pavement of the parking lot before closing the door.
"If the Soul King ever fell without someone to take his place, the World's wouldn't merge. They'd cease to exist entirely; he's the only thing keeping it all together, along with his subordinates in the Royal Palace. All I know about the King are stories and tales. I know even less about his Royal Guardsmen, something I hadn't even known existed until, disturbingly, recently."
A brunette lady in a sunday-dress walked down the breezeway of the plaza, two kids in a shopping cart with groceries alongside them. He stared through them into space until they opened the door to the resteraunt they were going to eat at, a large biege building with flat roof and hidden gutter system due to the lack of rain in this area not requiring an open gutter.
He shook off the brooding vibe.
"Truth be told Gage, I'd be disappointed if you did anything other then run it dry. Using all your recourses to your advantage is a good trait to have."
"Keeping in contact with the Society..? Hm, either they're getting desperate; or I'd say you're a valuable asset to them. They're not ones for gestures of good faith."
"I didn't upset your boyfriend did I?" Gage laughs at the bad mood of the driver. Too much tension in the air was making him uncomfortable. "Well, it's a good thing he's not going anywhere anytime soon. A lot of us over at Soul Society would put our lives on the line to make sure that the balance is maintained. Too much is at stake for us to just look the other way because some big guy upstairs is being quiet." The thought of everything being erased all at once was actually hard to grasp. The Disappearance of everything in existence on such a large scale was just difficult to Fathom. How strong could a single entity become before it was able to do something so large-scale?
"Well, hopefully now with the work that I have going on over at the Soul Society my body will last a little longer. I won't have to put it through the rigors of regular combat anymore. I don't know what kind of impact that's going to have on my soul but it would be nice to know that my joints are going to last a little longer."
A quick analyzing glance at Mekhanik had made him uneasy about the awkward turns the conversation had taken. These fools that were escorting him could too easily break the wall that he had worked hard to build brick by brick.
As they stepped toward the building, the rest of the Security detail decamped from their vehicles. The ones that were originally with Satoshi, his Quincy subordinates, seemed virtually unarmed compares to the humans.
They looked like they were fresh out of a SWAT squadron; a private military contractor that was hired by vassals within Naruki City to peace-keep--armed with SCAR-L and m16 assault rifles along with accessories and sidearms.
They shut their doors and lined the outside of the resteraunt they were about to enter. No people ran outside in fear, because there were no people to be afraid. A sign that this happened quite often. Or at least often enough for locals to know about it.
The driver of their limo was about to step about, but Satoshi personally felt as though the tension was raised by him;feeling a slight grudge coming on, he held his hand out in front of the driver.
"Sit. Wait."
The driver narrowed his eyes in confusion as if about to impede.
Satoshi narrowed his own eyes back at him, suddenly the driver fell to his knees in spontaneous sweat, interupting anything he might have felt the need to rebuttle.
With a deep-deep breath of relief, he spun around--about face style--exhaling. He could only think to smile at Gage and laugh awkwardly--did he just raise the tension by trying to diminish it?--crap. He put his hands in his pockets and walked toward the restaraunt doors.
"Newbies, psh." He remarked.
Men on either side opened the double-doors for them to walk through.
Satoshi's head turned as he spoke of his "Body lasting longer", his pace slowing as a sign of thought on the matter.
The man behind the counter gestured a wave at both of them with a, "Heya! Welcome to the Caesar's Bakery, just you two?"
"Clever observation." Satoshi replied.
Satoshi touched Mekhanik's back and gestured for him to sit with him at a table with his other hand. He flopped down at a diner table near the back windows. He always enjoyed the view of this place, the one building in the whole plaza that outlooked the park-forest instead of the streets.
"So what is this thing you're doing, some kind of life extension?" He spoke.
A waiter came over and brought them both a menu each, a glass of water--accompanied by a pitcher--with a lemon in each, and Greek roasted olives with garlic breadsticks as appetizers.
