APPEARANCE
Ryn with his Skikai releasedRyn stands at about six feet tall, weighing in about two hundred and twenty pounds of tone, slightly pale skin and muscle. How much that means to a spirit is unknown. His eyes always seem to smolder in a faint mix of amber and gold, like burning coals, but it's just a trick of the light and some central heterochromia. His hair is as aloof as he is, parting in ways that make it flow down his back with just enough weight to keep it from tangling up yet still somehow blows in the wind. Somehow, the red in his hair is a natural, extension of his reiryoku, always as either the tips or the roots and changing as his hair grows in a duo of shifting colors. Perhaps his most striking features are the tattoos that he somehow kept after death, as if the artist who attached them to his body tattooed his SOUL. Is that even possible? Ryusune enjoys the tried and true saying of "less is more", and thus doesn't have much in the way of accessories or clothing. In fact, when not in his shinigami wardrobe he is often half naked, no shirt or at least one 80% open bearing his chest. The less sleeve on a garment, the better. He claims it's not to show off his tattoos, but do you trust a guy to that statement when he constantly struts at a slow, surgically methodical pace?
PERSONALITY
Ryn is the type of guy that appears like he's always about to do something flashy or look really cool, but after you find out how usually lazy and laid back he is, you'll wonder how he even got to become a shinigami in the first place. While he follows rules and dutifully fulfills his obligations, he also seems to always find the time to goof off and seek other interests as well. He's the essence of the laid back cool guy without the annoying teen undertone, middle-aged and well seasoned. He takes this mindset into combat most of the time as well, keeping a cool head and playing defensively until he can gauge an opponent's strengths... and their weaknesses. then he counters with a varied but powerful arsenal.
If there are a few consistent things though, it is that Ryn is loyal. He's not so stubborn that breaking a few rules would be beneath him if it meant helping out an ally or friend. In a sense, he is a trickster under the cloak, though his tendency to wear less clothes than the average person may help disarm his own tricks. Besides all that, he has a loose, crude, and energetic sense of humor, loves to have fun, but has a darker side he absolutely refuses to admit to having that rears its ugly head usually when he's in a serious battle. His own way of taking things seriously, in other words, and something that can be quite frightening when someone isn't expecting it.
HISTORY
In life, Ryn began as a merchant carrying goods from town to town. In this previous life, he was given the name Toshisen Yamato. He was profitable, if a bit too honest and fair in his trade. His goal wasn't to make a huge profit, but to be well regarded as a good person, for one of his teachings in his family life was that increasing one's personal "goodness" was the best way to stay healthy and wise. It seemed to work, as he peddled wares to and from his destinations, set up shop for a couple of days, then moved on like a travelling market stall, or the ice cream man whom everyone rushes out to meet because he is happy and offers things you want at fair prices. Is that a thing? That was the business practice of Ryusune, and he gained a lot of good contacts this way. The true reason for his travel, and the excuse he used to sell in more than one place, was to take up the lessons of several martial artists. He trained with two primarily, going to their training grounds weekly, honing his mind and body. He never intended to fight anyone, but the curiosity of being your own weapon was too much for him to pass up. It also helped his discipline and kept him eager to help those in need, hence his job's booming success.
It's unclear the events that transpired that led to his death and subsequent transportation into Soul Society. After the fact though, the Plus Soul that began calling himself Ryn after his induction into the academy seemed to care less and less about being a productive member of society, even of the Soul Society. He did the bare minimum to proceed and never seemed to flaunt his power even after obtaining his zanpaktou and beginning to work towards joining the Kidosho to improve his spiritual powers. Perhaps it was truly a case of forgetting the old life, or maybe he had a deep seated reason for changing things, but he became much more laid back and aloof, even though he showed some definite talent in his fields. He'd spend the next few centuries honing his arts on a personal level, making few lasting friends due to his laziness and self-absorption. Not for lack of trying, but people seemed too focused on training and the whole... soul reaping shtick that he had little time to be himself around others. He played ball and took his job seriously, if less flamboyantly than some. He took time for inner training, even learning the name of his zanpaktou after one fateful self-reflection ceremony involving a misunderstanding with his Captain and certain unwritten rules. He never went as far as bonding with the blade, feeling that his own strength should be enough to see him through, though most recent events have persuaded him to.. maybe.. give that whole talking to your sword thing another try. Who knows.. maybe his sword's spirit is hot? (503 words)
