As Merrick shot the hadou from his fingers, he had high hopes that the bolt of lightning would at the very least sting the dark shinigami standing before him, giving Merry the impression that he could hurt the Vizard somewhat. To his dismay, when the hadou made contact with Kokurai's body, nothing happened. Not a scratch or bruise of any kind to even speak of on this his body, but the very energy that clashed with Kokurai's robes were simply brushed off as if they were pieces of dust bunnies. Merrick's eyes went wide as he beheld the fruits of his labor before him, knowing that if he did not perform well in this little sparring/possible slaughtering session with the Vizard, he would die no questions asked. As Merrick took in all that was happening, he looked up to see a terribly wicked grin across Kokurai's face, sending a cold chill down his spine. The Vizard had told Merrick essentially that he had to do better if he wanted to protect anyone in the Soul Society, and the raven-haired shinigami could not help but mentally agree with that statement as he began to think of what to do next.
Kokurai had then stated that Merrick's five seconds were over and it was now his turn, to which Merrick hoped and prayed to God that the dark shinigami would not by any means use the same ability that he displayed earlier in which he cleared several hundred yards of forestry as if they were tissue paper. Kokurai then raised his right hand into the air, causing ripples of energy to form above him and Merrick, and what came out of them was certainly grandiose and intimdating. Swords and spears began to emerge out of the ripples with such presence that Merrick felt they were knights answering the call of their king as Kokurai called it the Gate of Babylon. The name had such a familiar ring to Merrick since the Bible records many events and situations surrounding Babylon, but this technique was not exactly intended for anything related to Biblical history, but to slice up a weaker foe in a challenge for his worthiness. The weapons from a different dimension came charging at Merrick with such speed, he had very little time to react. But thankfully, he was able to flash-step away, escaping with just a cut on his right rib and leg.
When he appeared about twenty yards away to Kokurai's right bleeding some from his cuts, he quickly caught his breath from the shock of nearly becoming a shish-ka-bob at the hands of a Vizard such as he. But he also did not want to waste any time thinking about what happened, knowing that he had to move fast if he wanted to pass the test Kokurai was putting him through. It was then that Merrick took a deep breath, became serious and charged up blue energy for a higher kidou, "Hadou #33-," Merrick quickly used shunpo to appear a few feet behind Kokurai as a precaution, "Sokatsui!" The blue energy was then shot off with great force, giving him some hope that this time would be different.
The man could vividly remember when his own attacks were just as ineffective. He personally knows people who his own attacks would be ineffective against, so Merricks utter surprise came at a humor to him, he couldn't help but chuckle.
Vained attacks were all that seemed possibly as Merrick attempted to blast Kokurai with byakurai. Even the Vizard's own attacks seemed to be only mocking Merrick in his attempts to somehow defeat Satoshi..But to his own surprise, Merrick was not going throw in the towel--despite knowing that contuining this path could very well lead to mortal wounding, and perhaps even death. Nevertheless, the only thing that kept someone alive in a world of survivors with willpower and intuition. Merrick would have to display a feat of both if he was to do anything that could actually mark Satoshi.
Frankly he was actually surprised the Shinigami came out with just a few gashes. Those spears would have been more then capable of piercing through menos grande like butter on a July afternoon. Merrick would have to realize at that point that being a ranged fighter in this situation was lethal; so he, rather predictably, changed his fighting style to close-quarter shots. Merrick probably knew this, but attacks of speed were of no use. Satoshi could see everything going on around him like a virtual simulator in his head, especially with the fact he prided himself on being much faster then most individuals at his level. All he had to turn was follow his flash-step, bringing it right behind him.
Merrick claimed the only advantage he could with his Kidou, but it wouldn't be enough in this situation. And he had to prove it to him.
The Vizard smirked as the man erupted the Sokatsui. He spun around with an about-face, slamming his hand into the entire blast. Large crackles and bolts of energy began flying everywhere like reiatsu sparks from a furnace as he caught it, the Hado screaming in resistance to the Vizard's hand.
His smile widened, mischevious golden eyes baring through the bright blue light that sparked; baring down at Merrick.
"I think this is yours." He said arrogantly.
Clenching his hand, the Kidou spontaneously compressed into a small blue ball of crackling energy in the palm of Satoshi's hand. The impact reduced half its power, but it could still pack a punch.
With a baseball stance, he chucked it directly back at Merrick's feet to incite an explosion near them.
Merrick was sure that this time, he would be able to finally land a decent hit on the dark warrior he had been dealing with for the past half hour or so. The Sokatsui sped towards Kokurai with speed and intensity; but to Merrick's shock and dismay once again, his opponent spun around fast enough to where he caught the kidou with his bare hands. Merrick was not too surprised at the fact that Kokurai had a Sokatsui blast caught in his hands like a ball, but it still upset the shinigami that his kidou spells were not having any effect on him. From the very start of this match, Merrick's attacks were nothing but dust in the wind for the Vizard to brush away and then respond with near titanic abilities that if any one of them hit the young shinigami dead on, his death was sure to follow. However, Merrick was not going to give up without putting everything he had into this sparring match. Merrick was determined to show this demonic-like warrior that he had what it took to be more than a mere shinigami in the Soul Society, but a powerful force for good by God's grace.
As Merrick stood there watching Kokurai give him a grin of mockery while holding his hadou in hand, he thought about drawing his sword in order to put an end of all of his teasing of the kidou shinigami. But Merrick knew that if he did such a thing, Kokurai would barely have to do anything in order to annihilate his existence with the display of power from earlier when they were only talking. The Vizard then replied an infuriating remark about Merrick's Sokatsui blast belonging to him, and crushed the hadou to half its original size. The fact that Kokurai was even able to catch the Sokatsui dead on was one thing, but now crushing it to half its actual size was truly telling of how much more of an effort Merrick would have to make with this guy. He could obviously tell that Kokurai was going to throw the hadou right back at him in order to either hurt him or disorient him in some form or fashion, but Merrick then had an idea.
Just as Kokurai threw the hadou right back at him, Merrick suddenly used shunpo to appear in front of a 30ft. grand oak tree to the Vizard's immediate right and called forth the same hadou, but with a more concentrated amount of reiatsu in it, "Hadou #33-Sokatsui!" Reiatsu gathered in his hands, forming the blue beam of energy and blasted the lower regions of the oak tree. When the spell made contact, it destroyed most of the bottom to where it toppled over not even a few seconds afterwards, falling straight towards Merrick and Kokurai. But the young shinigami flash-stepped out of the way to stop a few feet away from the tree's line of sight, preparing the same hadou with which to blast the Vizard. Merrick decided to call the full incantation in order to give it more power and efficacy, "Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws!" The beam was much bigger, and Merrick could feel how much more powerful this attempt would be, "Hadou #33-Sokatsui!" He braced himself for the firing portion of the kidou, knowing that since it had the power of the full incantation behind it, it could knock him over once it shot off towards his opponent. The Sokatsui kidou fired with a significant amount of force, heading right for the dark shinigami and Merrick praying to God it would harm him in some way, shape, or form.
The man before him was starting to crumble away at the mere thought of someone being stronger then him. He could practically reach out and touch the insecurity beaming from his soul. Yet, the innovation and will to succeed was something that seemed to quickly cloud those scenarios. Merrick took what seemed to be an extra step of planning and precaution in his attacks, a level he previously did not display. The man easily dodged the counter-attack to his Hado, and Satoshi formed into a stance in what he assumed would be another head-on attack by Merrick. A witty display of power had quickly proven Satoshi the fool in this situation, a surge of energy cracked like a thunder-clap only to be followed by the familiar sound of...Timber.
Satoshi's body swiveled quickly to look behind him, a massive tree-trunk descending toward him before he could do much to react. His body arched behind him, sending himself into a backflip that narrowly missed the tree's impact. A brief moment of curiosity had struck Satoshi 'that was rather clever' he thought. He landed on his hands and whipped back onto his feet, sliding back a few against the dirt.
This moment took him back to the days of his own training over and over. His mass of scars were mostly signatures of said trainings, others more brutal then the next and the last; all of them having their own unique challenges. To not give Merrick one was akin to blasphemy to him.
A roar of blue energy sparked behind amidst his thoughts, and his head jolted towards its direction in surprise. The beam of energy ripped through the ground toward him, and he knew taking a direct hit from that would be a headache in the morning. Satoshi's hand zipped at high speeds to intercept, and slapped right into the side of the beam just before it connected with his torso. With a massive shockwave, the beam surged in a 60 degree arc beside Satoshi as he smacked it away, cracking into trees and foliage with a trail of flame.
He lifted his hand, reviewing the steam that swirled off of it in satisfaction; he smiled at Merrick.
The Vizard seemed to have a real close call as the tree came crashing down, almost hitting him as he flipped out of the way. But of course, the second Sokatsui was waiting for him from behind. Merrick watched the great hadou make its way to Kokurai, this time with a significant amount of power behind it. Merrick was growing tired of having to deal with being made fun of by the Vizard he was sparring against; although deep down, the raven-haired Kidoshu warrior knew that Kokurai had a right to brag about his great strength in comparison to Merry's. Still, Merrick was not going to let the dark warrior push him around anymore, he would rather die fighting than live like a coward. This sparring session began to teach Merrick the importance of standing your ground against someone who may be stronger, faster, and more knowledgeable, in spite of what it may look like. So, Merrick looked at the fruits of his labor as the kidou finally made contact with Kokurai, being disappointed once again once he saw that the Vizard swatted the Sokatsui away. But as he looked again, he noticed that a powerful shockwave was released from that incoming kidou when Kokurai pushed it away and Merrick could have sworn that he saw the Vizard use more speed in order to catch it in time. This all indicated to the righteous shinigami that Kokurai was having to use more strength to fight against Merrick's attacks, which began to slightly cheer him up. What then changed Merrick's mood a little more was that after the explosion of the kidou crashing into the trees behind Kokurai, the hand of the Vizard was steaming from the intensity of the heat and power behind the Sokatsui.
The Vizard cracked a sinister smile at the kidoshu shinigami, giving him a a compliment for his efforts after all this time. Merrick found this to be icing on his cheer up cake, but had to remind himself not to let the compliment nor the changes in Kokurai's defensive tactics get to his head because he needed to keep his guard up as much as possible against someone like this dark soul. He took the opportunity to reply with a, "At last you compliment me, Vizard." Merrick took a deep breath, keeping his fighting stance and focus as he asked him, "Is that all you wanted from me?" Merrick had a feeling that if he kept this up, his reiatsu would be depleted leaving him more prone to be killed by the fierce warrior he had to face today. So he was hoping that Kokurai would at least want to take a break.
