Getting the opportunity to visit the human world was something Merrick looked forward to, since being in the Soul Society can be boring from time to time. He had walked through the Senkaimon into a lush and green forest that appealed to the shinigami because of how it reflected the creative mind of God. Merrick took a moment to take in all of the created environment around him, listening to the sounds of birds chirping and singing as they fly above the trees. He felt the cool breeze blowing through the branches and leaves, causing adoration and worship to rise out of Merrick’s heart to God.
Today, the shinigami would be training in the art of Kido, the magical arts for Soul Reapers. Being in the Kidoshu Squad, Merrick knew he had to train in Hado and Bakudo in order to be a proper asset to his Squad and the Soul Society overall. One of the main difficulties shinigami have when wanting to train in Kidou is that they have to get the approval of a Captain to execute higher-leveled spells. But since Merrick is in the Kidoshu Squad, he had complete access to all but the forbidden Kido. So now that he had complete freedom, he only needed a good setting for his training session. This particular forest was not like the training grounds back in the Seireiteirei, where he could accidentally hit another shinigami nor would it be overrun with shinigami practicing so loud that they would distract you. Merrick then took out the Kido book and began to look for a few that he could use as a warm-up in order to get his body and reiatsu going.
You know, at some point with all the..Rivers of bodies and blood that get dumped like a soup kitchen meal for other people's benefit, you start to find out that your life is probably tougher then it seems. Infact, you might even find that life is hard. After all, it's life that kills you.Not death. A shinigami is just the messenger.
Though say what you will about shinigami's motives, because generally, it's pretty bad to be followed by a God of death. Fortunately for most people though, he couldn't really be called a Shinigami anymore.
Unfortunately for other shinigami, ever since he left squad 12 he's had relative ease finding out where members of the Soul society pop up. Could be here, could be there. Rarely does a Soul reaper just pop through another dimension without alerting someone.
To be perfectly honest, normally he wouldn't involve himself with things that appeared irrelevant off the bat; he relies heavily on intuition and instinct. But today was different, today was a new day. Actually a rather nice day at that, sunny and green. How deceptive the world can be, filling it with beauty. It was only a mask for danger and death.
"Mm..Aw yeah, that's fucking good." He takes another bite of his twix candy-bar with a mouthful of tea.
Sitting on top of a tree branch wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world by far. But shit, if you found a think enough tree branch, it really wasn't that bad. Mother nature's firm mattress. Especially when you had such human delectables, far beyond the capacity of a spirit. They just..Lack the passion of life to put into their food. Exquisite. And it even looks like the expected arrival is due for a curtain-reveal. Fun.
His long silver hair had perfectly matched his white robe, giving a sort of 'cold' appearance. Graceful, yet distant. Carefully watching as the Shinigami walked through the jungles of this world with little idea the dangers that could possibly befall someone who had no experience in these matters. Shame.
He took another bite and set the bar down on his branch 'seat'.
"That's for you, big guy." He said, patting the tree's bark. He gulped the rest of the tea in his cup and slipped it back into his robe; waving his hand to cause the jug of tea to disappear.
Golden eyes pierced at the Shinigami from above, watching as he sat down amongst the wilderness and opened a book. A kido book, from the looks of it. They never seem to update their editions..Boring.
His flash step carried across the winds like a flash of lightning, landing directly behind the man with a few crunch of leaves in order to give away his presence; his energy was quite well hidden. His long Nodachi was as long as he was, his hand rested against it as he smiled at the Shinigami.
As Merrick continued looking through the Kido book, he thought of how each one of them could possibly be used to their full potential. Even though he was dealing with low-leveled Kido right now, he had a feeling that with the right amount of training, these tier 1-3 Hado and Bakudo could become quite deadly against an opponent. He remembered hearing stories of great Captains in the Gotei 13 using low-leveled Hado with devastating power such as Captain Byakuya Kuchiki when he fought against a shinigami named Ichinto or something like that. So thinking of all the potential that lies within this book truly captivated the raven-haired shinigami, knowing that he had the very same potential as the Captains he serves night and day.
All of the deep thinking in Merrick’s mind had come to a screeching halt when he heard a loud crunching of leaves behind him and chilling voice ask him, “Lose something?” Startled, Merrick shut the book and quickly flash-stepped from his position to appear a few yards away in a fighting stance, looking at who it was with his swords drawn and crossed in front of his face ready to combat this possible threat. As he gazed upon this unexpected guest, he saw a man in white robes smiling in a bit of disturbing and twisted manner. What also grabbed Merrick’s attention about this guy was how long his sword was, so he could tell that the stranger was a shinigami.
Merrick began to feel on edge as he took in the sight of this man before his very eyes, then Merrick recalled how silently this man approached him from behind. Granted, if anyone is so deep in thought that they don’t notice anything else around them, its possible to sneak up on them. But this guy seemed to want to make his presence known by how loud the leaves crunched when he was right behind Merrick. So the raven-haired shinigami figured that the stranger was watching him for at least a few minutes. So instead of sheathing his dual zanpakutou, he merely lowered the swords to his side preferring to be on the safe side. Merrick then spoke in a bit of a formal, but defensive tone, “Good afternoon, I was only selecting some Kido that I could practice. Being part of the Kidoshu Squad demands excellence in the magical art itself.” He watched the stranger for how he would respond to the raven-haired shinigami.
Yeah, definitely comedic. His new friend's reaction to Satoshi's arrival couldn't help but bring about a chuckle. Their instincts always seem to resort to defensive maneuvers like the enemy decided to introduce themselves and then stab them in the back. He raised his eyesbrows with an 'Oh really?' in his face as the man drew his swords.
"Two swords? Fancy." He murmured, rubbing his scruffy chin hairs.
Kido, hm? He nodded in acceptance to the man's business in the forest, as well as his obvious discomfort to the yellow-eyed soul before him. He's a talker, alright. Probably does it when he gets nervous.
Don't want to scare the critter, he might creep away.
He coughed loudly to ease the silence, gripped the scabbard of his Katana, and yanked the sword out of his sash; laying it against a tree trunk next to him and proceeded to take a few steps toward the Shinigami.
"Oh, we all strive for excellence. But you're not going to get it with that useless thing." He spoke, nodding his head at the kido book that he possessed.
Taking out a completely clear device from a pocket in his robe, he tapped the center of the glass to initiate a start-up sequence. The device sprang to life, 'Mekhanic' was displayed on the screen. It similar to a phone in size, but much more advanced in purpose. He set it down gently on top of a flat rock. Guess I'll cut to the chase, then.
"This is a bit weird uncanny. So, this is going to go one of two ways, alright? Splendid. You can try and poke me with your..Uh--toothpick blades and see how well that benefits your health. Option two, you can put down your weapons down and we can have some nice tea."
Merrick had a feeling that he might be dealing with a dark soul when the stranger he had flash-stepped away from was laughing at his startled reaction, but the raven-haired Shinigami did not want to let him easily intimidate him. When the dark Shinigami had commented on Merrick's dual zanpakutou, he simply formed a more calm but serious expression on his face stating, "Hmm." Interestingly enough, the stranger simply laid down his zanpakutou against the tree as opposed to drawing his blade to fight. Merrick was always a little cautious when it came to strange and dark people, and even though this guy seemed dark to the core, he didn’t even try to start a fight. He then commented on how useless the Kido book would be when it came down to getting better at the Demon Arts, to which Merrick strongly disagreed with him on. Taking into account that there have been Shinigami in the Gotei 13 who are quite formidable because they had devoted themselves to both the magical arts and their zanpakutou from their initial days at the academy.
Merrick was about to voice his disagreement with the stranger when he noticed that the stranger had pulled out a small device and placed it on the flat surface of a nearby rock. The device had spun into action as he heard the stranger invite him to either a fight which he implied would end with Merrick's fatal failure or to have some tea. The idea of fighting a twisted soul such as the one standing before him was very tempting to the righteous Shinigami, but Merrick then thought about who it was standing before him. This stranger had deliberately made a noise to make his presence known to him while he was studying the Kido book. He also gave the impression of a formidable foe in spite of the fact that Merrick could not sense the man’s spiritual pressure, which would not keep him from trying to take him down but would still place Merrick at a possibly fatal disadvantage. So instead of taking up the option of fighting his way out of this situation, he sheathed his swords while he gave his answer, “I take sugar with my tea.”
Merrick had looked at the stranger’s piercing eyes, and it sparked a curiosity in Merrick as to whether or not the stranger was a Vizard. His bright-colored eyes had reminded Merrick of the his old friend Shinori Hanata, who unfortunately had to be slain by the hand of Merrick himself because he had lost control of his inner hollow and was posing a threat to the Soul Society. Taking into account how recently his fight with Shin was, it still weighed heavy on his on his heart some days. But Merrick made a promise to him that he would never let the hollows claim the lives of anyone ever again, including shinigami. So now that he was seeing this stranger before him, he wanted to know more about him than just how dark and foreboding he was. As the device continued to perform whatever task it was assigned, Merrick spoke with his usual calm, but slightly dramatic tone, “Perhaps it would be best if we start out this tea session with proper introductions, I am Merrick Iwasaki of the Kidoshu.” He looked at the stranger, hoping for a name to come from his mouth.
Often in his life, Satoshi had found that people were quite acute in their personalities. Unfortunately this tended to make them seem a bit dull to his taste, and he could lose interest fairly quickly. Today he was hoping, just maybe, this individual could show some zest for life. Clearly there was discomfort amongst Merrick. The very way he looked at the Vizard was with suspicion and concern, so for the time being he'd have to work on building some trust.
He smiled warmly with his eyes closed to display a friendly body language.
"Well then my friend, you're in luck; I happen to take sugar with my tea as well."
Carefully sitting cross-legged upon the earth, he wiped the dirt and grime off another relatively flat rock. He raised his hand at the stone; and for a brief instant, the Vizard's true power could be felt with a massive surge of dense energy. An almost searingly bright flash of light had appeared out of nowhere simultaneously to the energy.
Yet just as fast as it had appeared, it vanished, only to reveal a basket of baked food, and a new container of tea. Two empty cups were stacked onto each-other; next to a small bowl of sugar-cubes. Accommodation was nice, it often provided a layer of relaxation in the majority of situations. If not relaxation, then at least a little comfortability. Lowering his hand to the ground, he scooped up a tea-cup and the kettle; pouring the liquid inside before gently setting it back down.
His overwhelming gaze slowly shifted from his beverage. Looking upon the Shinigami with a nigh emotionless expression, he took a sip, lowered his cup, then set it back down upon the ground with a heavy sigh.
"Beating around the bush has never been a particular hobby of mine, so I will skip straight to the point. You seem quite busy with your, uh..Studies."
Waving his hand over the device that lay on the rock, its brightness seemed to spike immensely. The light radiating from it began to pulsate, ending with a flash that projected a 3d image directly above it. Transparent images were still detailed enough to make out most of it. It was a complete layout of the soul society.
"You have no reason to trust me, and frankly I don't have the time to waste trying to gain it. What I can offer, however, is a reason to trust your beloved Soul Society even less. My business is important, and I can ensure that you'll want to hear what I have to say."
"That book naturally limits your potential. You'll have a wondrous time learning from it, yes, but it's not going to be anything worth your life-span. Now, I'm sure you have questions. Now is your chance to answer them. As for my name, for now you can just call me Koku'. Short for Kokurai, my nick-name."
Merrick was glad to see the stranger smile warmly and hear that he also took sugar with his tea, inclining Merry to let his defenses down a little bit. One might think that just because someone wants to have tea with you doesn’t mean they’re trustworthy. But Merrick felt that even though this guy may have been a dark Soul Reaper, right now the stranger was not an imminent threat to him. So after seeing the stranger sit down to relax, Merry followed suit and sat down with his legs stretched out on the lush green grass, feeling the cool breeze blowing through the forest.
As he looked at the device spinning about activating, Merrick expected the tea to somehow miraculously appear out of the device. However, what happened next was completely unexpected. The stranger raised his hand at another similar rock in the forest; and suddenly, an intensely bright light had flashed from it, making Merrick instinctively raise his hand to cover his eyes and look away. At the same time, a great surge of power and reiatsu could be felt in the air that was significantly superior to Merrick’s, causing a little bit of fear to stir within him. After the light had and energy had quickly died down, Merrick saw there was a complete tea arrangement on the rock. The righteous shinigami was in a bit of shock and awe to see such a display of power from someone, knowing that he had only ever heard of power like this coming from God in the Bible. But to consider someone like this stranger to be from God was far from reasonable to Merrick.
The white-dressed Soul Reaper went ahead to say that he would go straight into what he wanted from Merrick. At that moment, the stranger raised his hand again, but this time towards the device on the rock in between them. With his hand held at the device, it released an intense light, making Merrick shield his eyes again. As soon as the brightness died down, Merrick put his hand down and saw a holographic display of the Soul Society on the device. Amazed at this sight, he almost missed what the stranger was saying. He said even though Merrick did not completely trust him, the raven-haired shinigami had even less reason to trust the Soul Society entirely. Upon hearing such a statement, Merrick looked at the stranger with bewilderment, for he could not help but wonder what on earth was he talking about. He went on to say that even though learning Kidou could be fun, it would not be as helpful in the long run. Of course, having just witnessed such displays of power, Merrick was a little bit more inclined to trust the stranger who introduced himself as Kokurai, or Koku for short.
Merrick got up and went over to the tea set and made his own cup, still contemplating what was going on before him. Merrick had a feeling that whatever information Koku had to pass on, it actually might be worth listening to. So Merrick walked back over to where he was sitting, but remained standing looking at the sky. He then sipped the tea, which was truly delicious and soothing. He took a deep breath, turned around to look at Koku with a calm, but attentive expression giving in to Koku’s offer, “Alright, you’ve peaked my interest, Koku. What do you mean Kidou is not worth my life-span? Apart from a shinigami’s zanpakutou, what other means can warriors such as we use to become stronger?” As he took another sip of his tea, Merrick was beginning to think that having an ally as powerful as Koku might benefit him knowing if he ever seriously needed help, perhaps he could call on this guy.
A look of curiosity was aroused in his eyes as the Raven-haired Shinigami moved about. To him, the way he presented himself wasn't meant to intimidate anyone. That gave him the impression this man wasn't a natural hard-head. Fortunately for him of course. He had spent many-a years collecting information, and many of the people he met on his journey were nothing short of stubborn.
He took another sip of his tea. Bitter. Another sugar cube was dropped in his cup, then stirred remotely just by moving his finger in a circular stirring motion above the tea. He took another steady sip.
"Magnificent. Persian's can make some tea, I'll tell you." He murmured to himself.
Moments had passed, the nicknamed Shinigami waited patiently for Merrick to acquaint himself with the situation at hand, observing intently as he made his own cup of tea. Kokurai (The Crimson One) nodded in satisfaction as his company enjoyed the tea that was brought.
He reached down and took an apple from the basket; sharp green color, and took a massive bite out of it. Juice spraying in either direction from his mouth. Crunch-crunch-crunch, gulp. "Ahhh."
The Vizard's gaze re-adjusted to Merrick as the man began inquiring. Keeping eye-contact as he asked him specifically about the Kidou. He took a deep breath, and exhaled.
"Let's see, how can I put this..Have you ever read a manual on how to do something? A book that is meant to guide your process in order to produce a particular outcome or goal to be completed. When you read this book, you gain an understanding that could only be derived from reading this book, based on its knowledge. Its upon instruction of this book's subject, not the book itself, that you learn how to improvise with this skill."
He made movements with his hands to visually assist his wording, a subconscious habit.
"Take a book about architecture. Let's say this book teaches you three different houses to make, and produces the step by step functions that are needed to learn them. It isn't until after building this house, or questioning of the book itself that you look at your accomplishment and think, 'Hm..Perhaps I actually could have done this or that to make it better then what this book says'. "
He took another crunchy bite of his apple. Munch-munch-munch, gulp. "Ahhh."
"In summary,-" Buurp.
"There is knowledge of shortcutting your way to power in this world, with no cost to yourself. Knowledge that is kept hidden on purpose. Why? Only to limit people like you, seekers of such knowledge. That book of yours, one I have studied for a hundred years myself, is nothing short of a pre-written spells. It is upon creation of your own power and creations that you learn how to truly become one with Kidou."
He took another mouthful of apple, and tossed it aside.
With a mouthful he mumbled, "That your only question, Merrick?"
As Koku began explaining his earlier objection, Merrick placed his tea on the flat rock where the device was still showing the projection of the Soul Society. He leaned his right side against the oak tree and crossed his arms, taking in all that was being said. Koku spoke of how when one understand the basics of the subject, not necessarily a book, then one has more freedom to grow as opposed to being limited because of a structured book. Merrick understood that growth in power is important as opposed to being trapped in one particular method, but he also believed that structure (whether it limits you or not) is helpful more often than not. So as he continued listening, Koku mentioned that with even books on architecture, there’s room for improvement whenever you actually build something.
Kokurai concluded his answer to Merrick’s question by telling him that there is an easier way to grow in power without working so hard for years on end. In that very moment, Doteki-Ryoku suddenly began rattling noticeably in the sheathe, which was slightly surprising to the shinigami as he drew one of his blades with his left hand and saw it was glowing with a bright white light. As he looked at the sight of his sword shaking and glowing, he heard DR speak quite firmly to him in his mind, “Merrick, what Kokurai is saying has some truth to it, but looking for the path of least resistance is not going to give you the results your looking for.” Merrick could not help but agree with his sword, looking for easy shortcuts was not the way Merrick wanted to approach any part of his training as a shinigami. But then he recalled that it was Kokurai they were talking about, this was the same man who displayed such mind-blowing power not even 10 minutes ago, seemingly manipulating matter and energy with little to no effort.
This all left Merrick a little bit conflicted, not knowing whether to continue investigating or cut the meet-and-greet short for the sake of not succumbing to the temptation of hunger for power. Merrick looked over to Kokurai with a curious expression, deciding to learn as much as he could before writing the dark shinigami off as a liar or greedy for power, “My sword and I are not entirely convinced of some of the things you have said, perhaps a few more demonstrations could help clarify these concepts you’re speaking of.” Merrick walked over to a small oak tree located 30 yards to his diagonal left and Koku’s right, took aim at it from 10 feet away with his left index finger. Merrick charged his left hand with reiatsu, causing white electrical energy to crackle around it as he called out firmly, “Hado #4-Byakurai!” The Kido sprang forth as a large white bolt of lightning from his finger, heading towards the tree at the speed of bala. The lightning bolt hit the tree dead center, causing an explosion and tearing the tree to shreds. Merrick looked over to Kokurai and asked him, “If I was to improve a Hado like that, what exactly would I have to do?” Merrick had a feeling he might actually like Kokurai’s response to this particular question.
It was becoming clearer by the second that his current way of speaking about abilities was confusing the Shinigami's understanding of what he was trying to get across to him. Perhaps there was an easier way..
He rubbed his chin in thought, seemingly interupted by an unmistakable reiatsu of a Zanpakuto spirit. His eyebrows raised in wonder. That could have been mistaken for a blatant disagreement of his own opinion on the matter.
Much to his unsurprise, it was. Merrick glanced at his Zanpakuto, and seemed to come to a conclusion of his own as he did so. Not long afterwards, his opinion was given to the Vizard with a tad bit of hesitation. It just so happened that Kokurai had a keen dislike for hesitation, so that only left eliminating it.
It was then that his Shinigami acquaintence had made up his anyway, remarking a need for a demonstration of his abilities. Stroking and twirling his long white hair, he watched closely as Merrick presented a Kidou blast, Byakurai to be specific. Nigh befuddled from the particular Hado he chose to use, he chuckled to himself and decided to try this from a different angle.
He sat up off the ground, and dusted himself off.
He exhaled deeply, then sniffled.
"Your worry on the subject is understandable..Would you like to know what I've noticed, Merrick of the Kidoshi? You've decided to focus on the topic of Kidou and knowledge of power, rather then inquiry upon the Soul Society's infamy. You think of me as suspicious and possibly power-hungry, that's fine. Rarely do people who first meet me believe otherwise. But do not think of me as a fool, I am not an arbiter of evil who seeks you to join my malice. Shortcuts doesn't mean you lose experience to gain power."
Leaves crunched, the Vizard moved nimbly through the short grass and brush, and stopped a few meters away from Merrick. He looked up toward the sky, sunlight shimmering through the cracks and crevices created by tree-branches.
"The book itself does not matter, perhaps I should have said it this way to begin with. There are spells in it that are worth learning, such as the one you just demonstrated. Spells that mark your unique path to your goals, they become cornerstones. But some spells in that book are riddled with nonsense, they are nothing more then obstacles put in your path to slow your movement toward the meaningful spells. Power is..Dangerous. Power can attract the worst out of people, Merrick. But something to remember; power does not corrupt people, people corrupt power. It is the essence of our innovation that improves our skill. And yet, people do not become great by following the footsteps of a great man, you do what the great man did."
He took another deep breath, and looked back down to Merrick.
"Do you know what my Zanpakuto wants right now, Merrick?"
He looked over at his blade, standing against a tree.
"It's suggesting I stop wasting my time with you, and gut you where you stand. Do I think it's correct? No, because people can't learn if they're dead. You are confused, rightfully so. But that is because you have yet to learn."
He paced towards the area that the Shinigami shot his Byakurai, and stood next to a perfectly healthy tree.
"I will explain everything to you, Merrick. My offer is this, you will learn the things I have spoken to you about and more; the truth behind my ramblings."
He looked at the tree, reached his hand out and felt the bark intimately.
His muscles quickly contracted and then relaxed, simultaneously releasing a mountain of energy. This energy, in comparison to what was displayed earlier, was astronomical.
"Kaso."
A crashing torrent of shimmering yellow reiatsu had surged out of him, appearing like a tsunami of gold. Just as fast as it had released, it absorbed into one small point around his hand and released outward with a catastrophic result; a shockwave crashed into everything within 100m in front of Kokurai, until there was nothing left. Every single tree, branch, leaf, pine-needle and shrub within blast-zone had began completely tearing itself apart as if mini-bombs were going off inside each atom.
In one massive burst of energy, a football field size of prospering jungle was pulverized into a field of dirt and rock, bits and pieces of wood and shrubbery began falling from the sky.
He lowered his hand, nothing but air had filled the area where the trees once stood. He exhaled deeply and put his hand back in his pocket and paced back over to Merrick and said,
"And all you have to do in return my friend, is listen."
He sat back down at the tea area, and began sipping once more.
{Abilities used}Name: Kasō (Masquerade) Class: Reiryoku Technique Tier: III-VII Type: Offensive(Binding)/Defensive(Binding) Range: 100 meters Description:This is an advanced remote energy manipulation ability that is able to be manifested as a variated telekinesis forming as a light-gray haze, showing itself as Reiatsu. This ability is either used as an Offensive/Binding and activates those cooldown, or used as a Defensive/Binding separately to activate their set of cooldowns. Anything within 100 meters of the user is able to be influenced by the effects of Kaso, including techniques. With this he is able to alter the movements of reishi/Reiatsu if advantaged equally, or completely manipulate them if advantaged higher. This ability does not allow the user to create actual attacks, but rather to push and pull, or even twist, crush, or split. The effectiveness of these abilities are equal to the tier used, and resemble a bakudo of equivalent tier (besides Danku). Beyond stopping/nudging/destroying an ability/reiatsu, higher advantage is required. The ability to influence energy, objects, individuals has a natural drop-off dependent on the distance. This is a psuedo-telekinesis ability which cannot be used to puppeteer the actions of any character.
After making the inquiry to Kokurai about Kido, the foreboding, powerful, and possible half-hollow shinigami had arisen from his comfortable position. As he dusted himself off, he began telling Merrick that what he had noticed in Merrick’s question was his focus on power and Kido as opposed to the issue of the Soul Society’s dirty little secrets. What Koku didn’t know was that Merrick already knew a little something about the Gotei 13’s horrendous and brutal past before it became the more civilized organization it is today. So it wasn’t necessarily his focus right now. Merrick became a little skeptical of Kokurai saying that he was not the evil character Merrick thought he was, but was willing to give Koku the benefit of the doubt. The dark shinigami went one to say that just because he is offering Merrick a shortcut to power does not mean one will necessarily miss out on experience or true training.
Merrick took note of Koku walking towards him with such grace and balance, giving the raven-haired Shinigami the impression that this guy was definitely trained well in overall fitness. Kokurai continued walking past Merry until he was a few yards away, looking intently at the forestry surrounding the both of them. As Merrick became a little curious about what the suspected half-hollow shinigami was looking at, Koku commented on how the Kido book was essentially useless, apart from a few number of powerful spells like Byakurai to help Merrick reach his goals as a shinigami. What really stuck out to Merrick was when Koku said, “Power does not corrupt people, people corrupt power.” The raven-haired shinigami could not help but agree with a simple, “Hmm.” Knowing that since there were accounts in the Bible where men who were used by God to accomplish great holy feats had supernatural gifts granted to them, it was possible for people to use power for good. But at the same, scripture also records demonic forces using their supernatural powers for evil. So whether Kokurai was a force for good or evil remained to be seen in Merrick’s eyes.
As Kokurai looked back at the righteous shinigami, he stated how his zanpakutou wanted Koku to kill Merrick and be done with this meet and greet. But he made it clear that he will not do so, but only teach Merrick more about this new path to power. It was then that Merrick knew that Koku’s sword was a ruthless spirit, who if given the opportunity, would slaughter a handful of people without any remorse. Koku walked over to a great oak tree, feeling the fine details of its bark. Merrick looked upon this strange occurrence, expecting the half-hollow shinigami to perform another great feat. As Koku flexed his arm muscles, he released a sudden overflow of reiatsu followed by one word, Kaso. Once that single word had been spoken by Kokurai, bright golden energy had sprung forth from his hand and condensed into a small point. A second after that, the small point of energy had dramatically burst forth from his hand in the form of a shockwave toward all the forestry on the other side of his hand destroying everything for what seemed to be 100 meters.
Merrick was truly shocked and astonished to witness such power on display before him, he stared at the effects of Koku’s ability which was all the trees, rocks, plants and etc completely reduced to splinters, dirt, and shreds falling from the sky. Kokurai walked back over to Merrick, telling him that all that was required of the raven-haired shinigami was a hearing ear in order to properly understand all Koku wanted to teach him. Merry was still trying to wrap his head around what he had seen from this half-hollow warrior, knowing with certainty that this guy was truly in a completely different class than Merrick had ever seen. He took a deep breath, drew his zanpakutou and asked DR, “Are you as convinced as I am about Kokurai?” His sword had released two bright pulses of energy as he responded to Merrick in his mind, “Just like you, I am suspicious of his character. But I do sense there are valuable pieces of information we can learn from him. Let him teach you, Iwasaki-san.”
It was at this point that Merrick took another glance at the destruction of the forest caused by Kokurai not even five minutes ago, scoffing in satisfaction of what he had seen. He then sheathed his zanpakutou as he turned around to walk back over to where he originally was standing when he first inquired of Kokurai and sat down cross-legged. He looked him in the eyes and said with conviction, “My sword and I will always suspect you of being dangerous and manipulative, but we are willing to give you a hearing ear. Let’s start with something you mentioned earlier before you turned supernatural lumberjack on me, the trustworthiness of the Soul Society. I have been informed a little bit on how the Gotei 13 had a bit of a brutal past before they more civilized. Is that what you were referring to, Koku?” The raven-haired warrior was wondering what exactly would be said this time around.
His confidence of Merrick's understanding had been increased, certain that the man would begin to comprehend the details of Kokurai's details. He smirked in novelty at the satisfaction of Merrick's awe; Kokurai's display of power clearly surprising the younger Shinigami.
As one progresses, such displays of power become more and more irrelevant to said person. But it was always enjoyable to see someone else in astonishment. Unfortunately the heavy burden of life starts to become more prominent, especially as your power grows. You start to realize that even with all that power, your still just as weak as where you first started unless you put it to use.
It seemed as though Merrick was finished being surprised, walking over to the Vizard's position and sitting back down with him. Finally, he began to ask the question's that were intended to be asked in the first place. He remarked the fact he was labeled as being possibly dangerous and manipulative. Heh.
"I can assure you Merrick, I have yet to find someone that isn't dangerous and manipulative on some level." He leaned against the rock the device was upon, and looked up at the 3d image.
"Right, if you want to start, we'll start for real. But know this Merrick, the truth hurts. You must be prepared to face whatever consequences come with knowing it. Aghem, with that in mind."
He tapped the device, and the image split into two seperate pictures, one was a layout of research and development, another was picture of the Central 46 building.
He locked eyes with Merrick, a face of extremity and grimness rested upon his eyes.
"First of all, let's get this straight. The fact that you were 'informed' of anything, means nothing. People will tell you what they want to tell you, and those people themselves hear it from people who barely know. Second hand information is easily edited."
He chuckled.
"Second, no, we're talking about present. What the Gotei does on a daily basis to, as they say, 'keep the peace'. And the fact you can even call them civilized is.."
He shuttered in disgust.
"Vulgar. The Soul Society by that definition, has always been civilzied. But they've also always been brutal. First, I'll tell you about the bounts. A race of beings created by the Soul Society trying to dabble into territory they had no idea about, combining soul DNA to amplify it. In the process, they created the bounts; but the experiment was a failure. The result's were not what they had wanted to conclude with, and the failure resulted in an catastrophic explosion that took out 1/10 of the entire Soul Society. But did the Soul Society attempt to fix this? Oh yes, in their own way. The Bounts were cast into exile simply for being born. Years later, even after countless centuries of peace and no harm to humans, the Soul Society had decided to wipe out the Bounts because they simply didn't trust them, and sent men about men to assassinate every single last one of them."
He coughed to clear his throat, and took another sip of his tea.
"And that was only to fucking summarize, I could go on for days alone about that. But.."
He set his tea down.
"Next there are mod souls. The Soul Society had decided to create artificially editable souls, otherwise known as modification's. Millions upon millions of lives, forced to labor our every need. And what's more, destroy any mod soul that is, quote, 'defective.' What defines being defective? Anything from unwillingness to cooperate with Soul Reapers, to being annoying. And it all starts, Merrick, with these two buildings."
He points at C46 and R&D.
"Central 46 decides the fate of everyone in the Soul Society with absolute authority, regardless of what people think. Research and development has, for quite some time, documented many unethical cases in order to simply expand technological workings. Sanctioned murders for the good for our 'futures'."
He waved his hand, and the images were replaced with one of countless dead bodies and crators from a battlefield.
"This was a recent battle that was sanctioned by the Soul Society themselves, a fight against a group known as the Wandenreich. Although extremists, they were not lethal, and they had decided to attempt to kill them anyway. When they realized they had done nothing but horribly failed and got innocent people killed in the process, C46 had announced the situation to be completely classified and halted any news from reaching the Gotei."
He waved his hand once more, a picture of a popular Soul Reaper known as Raiden had appeared.
"This man, a hero, a legend to his people and a morale compass for all; sentenced to life in prison for murder. The real situation..?"
He waved his hand once more, a dead body of a woman lay on the ground; but she had a hollow mask.
"His friend attempted Hollowfication and failed. And so to protect the people around him, he had to kill off the hollow she had become in the process. The Central 46, deeming this situation unethical, sentenced him to rot."
He snapped his fingers, and the device flickered off.
Extremely upbeat, he raised a wild grin and drank his tea.
As Koku stated that everyone to some degree is dangerous and manipulative, Merrick simply looked down shaking his head in disappointment that the dark shinigami would be so cynical. Merrick looked back at him when he started talking of how he was going to share some potentially dangerous information to the raven-haired shinigami. But Merrick remained unmoved by such a statement, ready to hear whatever Koku would relay to him.
The half-hollow shinigami tapped his device, changing the display to two different places in the Soul Society, the Research and Development Center and Central 46. He looked back Merrick with a solemn and grim expression, which made the raven-haired shinigami even more interested in hearing the next words that would proceed from his mouth. Koku stated how any info Merry may have been given about the history of the Soul Society could easily have been fabricated. His presentation to Merrick was not about the past of the Soul Society, but the present and the idea of even considering them civilized is quite repulsive in his eyes.
Kokurai first spoke of a race of beings called the Bounts, created by the R&D in order to accomplish God knows what. But alas, they failed and the Bounts themselves paid the price for it. Not only were they exiled, but years later were hunted and many of them assassinated. Merrick reflected on how in the Academy he was taught merely what the Bounts are, not the history behind them and the same went for the Mod Souls. As Koku spoke on Central 46’s seemingly godlike authority in the Soul Society, Merrick recalled hearing of how the Academy taught that indeed the C46 has such power unfortunately. Merrick began feeling a bit of anger growing deep down, because of how he hated the idea of a specific group of men having so much power over an entire civilization with no one to challenge them should they be morally wrong in their decrees.
Kokurai waived his hand toward the device, changing the display again to what looked like a catastrophe. Buildings reduced to rubble, lifeless, bleeding bodies as far as the eye could see. As Merrick watched in horror of what was in front him, Kokurai explained that this was a bloody battle between the shinigami and the Wandenreich, a powerful and extremist group of Quincy’s who simply hated shinigamis. Merry had certainly heard of them in the Academy, but his instructors always said how they wanted to destroy the balance between hollows and shinigami.
The last thing Koku showed the raven-haired warrior was a shinigami named Raiden, who according to Koku, was wrongfully sentenced to the Maggots Den because he killed a shinigami who failed their own attempt at hollowfication and posed a threat to the Soul Society. This particular situation did have a personal touch for Merrick because of how he himself had to do the exact same thing for his own former classmate who failed hollowfication as well, but never suffered any repercussions for it.
As Koku turned off his device, he looked at Merrick and asked for his thoughts on all of this. Merrick folded his arms and looked at the ground, trying to process all that the dark shinigami had divulged to him. Knowing information like this is risky for someone as committed to the Gotei 13 as he is right now. Merry understood that the Soul Society was not perfect in its system, but it’s people are doing the best they can to keep the balance between all the realms.
He looked at Kokurai with concern in his eyes, “I too had to deal with a situation in which a friend of mine was attempting hollowfication.” Merry started to get a little choked up when he continued talking about it, “He failed and was turning into a monster, so I had no choice but to kill him.” He took a deep breath, cleared his throat as he regained his composure and went on to talk about the other things Kokurai mentioned, “I knew some of what you told me, Koku. It wasn’t easy hearing some of the Soul Society’s sins and mistakes, but I feel that the main problem is that Central 46 has too much power that if left unchecked, could be disastrous for all the realms. Allow me to ask you what may be a difficult question, what viable solution do you see fit for this problem?” He had a feeling he might not like the answer the dark shinigami would give.
He thought that maybe his explanation would confuse, or possibly misconstrue his meaning of the situation; but he was pleased when Merrick had asked the golden question, one that everyone has always asked him at one point, or even vise versa. In essence, "What are you gonna' do about it?" It was a good question, one that marked the actions of a person who claims to be for the greater good.
He adjusted his position, calmly tapping the device once more. This time, the image was of the Rokungai district, regular souls living lower-class lives.
He nodded in response to his question and pointed at the image, lowering his hand after doing so.
"These are Souls as you know them, AKA plus souls. What is the Soul Society to people who don't know what it is? The afterlife. But.."
He tapped the image again, and again, and again. Images of famished and homeless individuals of every age had displayed people in alley-ways and street corners, drinking themselves to death or stealing food from each-other.
"But to people like me who spent their life here? People who know what the Soul society is, knows it to be hell."
He picked up the device from the rock, shut it off, and slipped it inside his robe pocket.
"What do I plan to do? The inevitable. The first step to solving a problem is realizing there is one, Merrick. And the only way to solve one of the biggest problems in existance, tyranny, is through.."
His hand lifted up and tapped the flat stone next to him. A flash of yellow energy; and a moment later there was a small statue of a man holding a pitchfork and a torch.
"Revolution. If you convince the crowd, you convince the individual. Everyone in the Soul Society more or less knows the true nature of Central 46 to some degree, but no one knows it better then people forced to live in their shadow. Caught in an endless loop of hunger and wishful thinking. I plan on showing the Rokungai these truths, as well as the Soul reapers willing to listen. This, hopefully, will spark a will to change."
He took another sip of his tea.
"It's far better then the alternative, which is kill everyone and everything that moves."
Kokurai expressed to Merrick how on the outskirts of the Soul Society, was the Rukongai District. A destitute place where souls from the Human World were in this afterlife suffering hunger, poverty, and crime. Merrick, knowing full well about the Rukongai villages, listened patiently to at least make sure his understanding of the villages had not been off. Merrick certainly did not like the idea of people suffering like that out there in the Rukongai districts; knowing that in conditions like that, crime and corruption would be more commonplace. The raven-haired shinigami took into account that if there was someone who could perhaps teach them a better way or perhaps do for themselves, they would actually prosper as opposed to relying on their government to take care of them.
Kokurai then went on to explain what his solution was to the issue of Central 46’s tyranny on the poor and downtrodden, he turned off his device and put it in his pocket. Then Koku touched the small rock next to him and with a bright yellow burst of energy, it changed into a statue of a man who looks like he was part of an angry mob. Koku stated that the answer was revolution, to have everyone in the Rukongai Districts and as many shinigami as possible fight back against the Central 46’s way of doing things. Merry sat there contemplating the idea of changing the government, but in a different manner than what the dark shinigami was talking about.
Just as Merrick was getting ready to respond to Koku’s solution, he heard the half-hollow shinigami state that his solution is better mass murder. Merrick couldn’t help but scoff and chuckle while shaking his head at the fact that someone like Kokurai would most likely say something like that, but then cleared his throat stating, “I agree that a change is necessary to our current government system, but there may be another way to help the poor people of Rukongai while working with the Seireitei on government reform. If the people of Rukongai can learn how to incorporate and balance self-improvement, community, and self-reliance in order to improve their current conditions without any welfare from Central 46, then they would be in better life conditions and have their piece of the pie in this afterlife. This may seem naive of me to say, taking into account that the people seem to be lacking in resources. But if we could perhaps learn from other cultures and how they made it, then Rukongai could develop into something more.” Merrick was of course unsure how the half-hollow shinigami would take this particular solution from him. But Merry knew that even though this would take a little bit longer than a direct revolution, it would be much more beneficial for both the people of Rukongai and the Soul Society.
Listening intently, his attention was focused upon Merrick for the duration of his thought process. It was remarkable to him that someone could live in the Rokungai, kill his own friend, and still believe he can solve things like a politician.
A sturdy laugh couldn't help but escape from his lungs.
"You think like a younger man, Merrick. Admirable..."
Koku stood up and dusted off his white robe, then placed his hands behind his back, and paced slowly through the grass.
"But unfortunately mistaken. You haven't lived long enough to see what the Soul Society is truly capable of, and yet to know that Central 46 will silence anyone who deems their will..'Incapable'. Why, Merrick? Why can't this be changed?"
He faced him in the middle of the field.
"Listen closely, because I will only tell you this once. The Central 46 is indirectly controlled by the authority of the Soul palace, the home to the Soul king; patron of us supposed Souls. They believe in expressing their authority, they follow the will of the Soul King. Incorrectly so, of course. They haven't been in contact with him for centuries."
A sigh left his mouth, followed by a deep inhale.
"Do you want to know what Aizen wanted, my friend? He wanted to replace the Soul King and take over the balance of the world. But in doing so, not only did he threaten it, he slaughtered countless in the process. That is what the Soul society does on a weekly basis, with not a single drop of remorse, nor anyone in their right mind to stop them."
His hands left his back, and starting moving around as he spoke.
"His idea was good, but his way of doing it was foolish. Nonetheless, the Soul society assisted in the destruction of countless lives, and wasn't even the one who stopped him in the end. It was two citizens of Karakura town, Ichigo Kurosaki and Kisuke Urahara. Did they receive rewards? Hardly."
"Now what about the Wandenreich? They knew they can't simply become the Soul King, so they wanted to remove him from power and replace the world order. As you can tell, they didn't get far with their first attempt. The Soul Society slaughtered all of them. What do they want besides that? Who knows?" He shrugged.
"You will soon come to the realization, Merrick, that there really is no balance. It's all anarchy and chaos, funneled into one shape by the Soul Society in order to call it balance. Countless people still die from hollow attacks across the living world. The Soul reaper's are practically there just to send the dead to the Soul society, they have minimal effect in actually saving lives."
"Let me finish my thoughts by saying this, Merrick of the Kidoshi. I do not care what you think about me, nor will I ever. I have always been independent, because despite other people's opinions, I know what needs to be done. Nonetheless, I have other allies and people who see the true despair that is being caused, and wish to change it. So with that, decide here and now what you want to do with your life, Merrick.
You can spend the next few hundred years reading that book and living in the grace of the Soul Society's walls while everything else slowly burns, that choice is up to you. But know that when the day the Soul Society is finally free, if you are against its freedom, then you will be my enemy."
He put his hands behind his back once more, and looked at the leaves..Dancing in unison.
"Gorgeous, is life. Yet even more tragic then death itself. The first step to solving a problem is realizing there is one, Merrick. "
The raven-haired shinigami saw that Koku found a bit of humor in how Merrick presented his solution for this supposed tyranny on the people of Rukongai, while knowing deep down that the half-hollow shinigami was not going to agree. Kokurai explained that Central 46 rule on behalf of the Soul King who lives in the Soul Palace, but they apparently have had no contact with said Soul King for a long time. Next thing he mentioned was how former Captain Aizen had attempted to overthrow the Soul Society’s way of handling things by slaughtering many people in order to accomplish his own ends. As the story has been told, the Captains of the Gotei 13 banded together with other races of supernatural beings to fight against him.
Suddenly, when Merrick heard Koku say the name Ichigo Kurosaki, his eyes widened some as he recalled that it was him that Captain Byakuya Kuchiki fought against all those years ago. He heard of how the 6th Squad Captain was pushed to his limit fighting this man, so Merrick knew that Ichigo Kurosaki was the real deal when it came to power. As Kokurai went on to say that said legendary shinigami and former Captain Urahara were not rewarded for help in stopping Aizen, Merrick shrugged as he thought to himself, “A lot of shinigami do something spectacular and don’t always get rewarded, or at least not in the way they hoped.”
Kokurai then brought up the Wandenreich again, saying how they too wanted to overthrow the Soul King and make everything over in their image. Thankfully, the Captains were able to pull out all the stops to take care of this powerful threat before those Quincies could do any fatal damage to the Soul Society. Koku went on about there really was no order in the Soul Society, but restrained anarchy. It was then that Merrick to wonder if there was anything that could be done for the sake of all people shinigami and civilian alike. Kokurai may have a point that something is wrong, but to resort to a revolution when most of the rebels would not stand a ghost of a chance against the Gotei 13 is far worse.
Merrick sat patiently listening to Kokurai concluding his speech on revolution by saying that the raven-haired shinigami’s opinion of Koku did not matter to him, being an independent soul. Merrick was amazed that Kokurai said that he has gained a large following already and planned on gaining more and the scarf-wearing shinigami had to make a decision as to which side will be on. Merrick truly felt temped to join this resistance for the sake of learning whatever abilities he could from this half-hollow Soul Reaper, but Merrick could not compromise his values for the sake of power. He looked stood up, looked at Kokurai with a solemn expression stating, “I see that you’re truly set on this revolution and that I cannot persuade you otherwise. I will do whatever I can in order to help the Soul Society go through a sort of legal reform, but I won’t be joining this movement of yours for now. But there is one thing I request of you, to learn the true art of Kido so that I can least be a better asset should the need arise.” Merrick hoped that Koku would be willing to at least guide him in respects to Kido for now.
He couldn't do anything but shake his head in pity of the man's response. It seems; too long have this generation of Shinigami been shielded from the truth. Clear to him Merrick could not grasp reality, he raised an eyebrow at the black haired man's request to learn the secrets of Kido.
He couldn't help but rub his chin's stubble in thought.
"When you picture revolution, you picture some fanatic standing in front of 100,000 souls, telling them to take up arms and fight."
He walked quickly, right up to Merrick. Sitting down or not, the large Vizard would tower of the Shinigami with a look that was never displayed before by Kokurai, a look of rage.
"Let's get serious here, Merrick. We'll be adults, so take a long look at me."
His eyes narrowed.
"Do think I got this far, survived for this long, because I want an army of untrained peasants to fight for my cause? You think my one plan; after centuries of forming it, is to simply cause more chaos? And yet, despite your in-action to literally anything, you want to learn Kido just incase you ACTUALLY decide upon something you want to do!"
"As I said, you convince the crowd, you convince the individual. The souls in the Rokungai are not meant to be the pawns in a war. There is no fucking 'legal' way to try and defy a god, buddy. You think he's going to step down from his golden palace, which by the way is in another dimension, and listen intently to Merrick of the Kidoshi's ideas on political reform?"
He released a laugh of mockery.
"Every little shred of progress you see today in any society, like it or not Merrick, was bred through either revolution of tyranny, or enforcement of tyranny. Everything else is just fluff. You want to know what I plan to do? I plan to do more then just make the Rokungai want their freedom, I'll have the Soul Society itself take its freedom. Funny part is, the Captain's of such squads would have no problem cutting down anyone who interferes with the Soul Society."
He scratched his head, thinking.
"I doubt any amount of information on this situation will change your mind, you just haven't been through enough of the world to see it's errors. I respect your optimism, however."
"Alright Merrick, I will teach you. But you're absolutely not going to like the way I'm going to do it..I think it will be perfect for this situation."
He put his hand on Merrick's shoulder.
"I'm going to try and hurt you, badly. Your job is to do your best to defend yourself, using only your kido. An arrancar named Theo had did this very same thing to me, I'm lucky to be alive. Perhaps you will have the same luck I did, hm?"
As Merrick stood there waiting for Kokurai to respond to his inquiry about kido, he saw the half-hollow Shinigami shook his head in disappointment that the raven-haired Shinigami was not on board with the idea of a revolution against the Soul Society. But what could Merrick do as a low-leveled member of the Kidoshu Squad? Go up against great Captains who have fought creatures that Merrick has only ever dreamed exist? Risk being imprisoned in the maggots den for treason? Merrick was certainly not going to take extreme measures for the sake of freedom just yet, mainly because of his spiritual beliefs. He strongly believed that if the proposal he had made to Kokurai did not work by any means, then, and only then would he search for Kokurai and agree to this revolution. Therefore, until Merrick saw no other way to fight for freedom in the Soul Society, he would go the politically correct way for now, admittedly.
Before Merrick could even realize it, the powerful Vizard had quickly appeared in Merrick's face with rage written all over, scaring the raven-haired warrior into taking a step back and place his hands on his zanpakutou taking a defensive stance in case he had to draw it in self-defense. Kokurai said that it was time to get serious and speak like grown men, which made Merrick cock his head to the side and raise his eyebrows in curiosity as to what the dark Shinigami might say next. Koku began to angrily express his disappointment in Merrick for wanting to focus on Kido as opposed to this revolution he was planning and that if the raven-haired Shinigami was expecting the Soul King to come down from his great palace and ask us what we think of his rule and reign, Merrick was sadly mistaken. Kokurai concluded his angry rant by saying that he will precede with his plan to free the Soul Society from tyranny in such a way that even the Captains will cut down anyone who tries to interfere with their freedom.
While Merrick was still in his defensive stance, Kokurai stated that he doesn't think any amount of evidence will convince the raven-haired Shinigami to join the cause; however, he truly respected Merrick's optimism to try another way. When Merrick heard that Koku would finally teach him kidou, he relaxed back into a straight-standing position, figuring that the dark Shinigami was not going to kill him...at least not today. (OOC: a little humor with how twisted your Vizard seems) The thing that made Merrick a little nervous was how Koku said that it was not going to be pleasant how he was going to teach him, but Merrick had a feeling that not a lot of things were pleasant about the half-hollow Shinigami. So he did not really expect anything different from someone like him.
Koku placed his hand on Merrick's shoulder, to which the raven-haired Shinigami looked over at his shoulder with his left eyebrow raised and back at Kokurai as he heard the possible Vizard say he will give try to hurt him badly and the only means of offense or defense he wants Merrick to use is his Kidou. Merrick was a little worried at first when he heard Koku mention that he himself trained the same way with an Arrancar named Theo; but Merrick figured that since Kokurai was not intent on killing Merrick, he could at least relax and focus on this training session. So as he saw the half-hollow warrior laugh nonchalantly, he took a deep breath and with a serious look, focused in on the slightest movement of Kokurai's body. As Koku stated he had five seconds, Merrick quickly called out with his right index finger about two inches from Koku's sternum, "Hadou #4-Byakurai!" As Merrick's reiatsu sprang to into his hand, electricity crackled in his finger as three seconds passed; and on the fourth, a great lightning exploded from his finger with the intent on hurting the dark Shinigami.
He narrowed his eyes in befuddlement, his company's uncanny boldness was rather unexpected. You'd think a man with his wits in order would put distance between them, but instead the five second gap was used to perform a notorious point-blank shot. This should be amusing at the very least.
He liked the boy's tenacity, but the finger was admittedly a dead-giveaway for a low ranking Hado, something he has picked up in his battle experience. More powerful hado's were either done from a range due to their explosive capabilities, or were used with a hand instead of a finger to spread out energy meridiancs. There was one simple solution to this kind of attack, to side step. But perhaps he should be a good teacher and give him a lesson.
Nigh was the Vizard's movement as he spoke the words. He thought little of the man's inferior ability and edgeless goals after their talking had ended, coming to realize for himself that action was going to scream what literature could not.
A smile ran across the death god's face; like a crack forming in a mountain-top. The blue electricity shot with a crackle of simultaneous speed and power, and impressive feat from so close of a viewing. Yet both shows of speed and power came to a rather anticlimactic stop when it touched the Vizard's body. The piercing energy simply hit and stopped as if it was touching some kind of indestructable metal. The beam didn't even manage to mark his clothes, sparks of blue reiatsu falling off his robe as he brushed the small black marks off.
Sweep-sweep-sweep. All clean!
He looked back up at Merrick with delightment at his failure.
"You're not going to protect a single soul with that, Mr.Kidoshu. Your 5 seconds are up, my turn."
Let's give him a show, yeah? Make the day interesting. Koku raised his right hand before a three circles of rippling energy appeared above his head, and brought it back down swiftly. The shimmering circles of energy began to surge; revealing very quickly that they weren't just random circles. A gold-tipped spear, a steel sword, and another iron spear had began slowly erecting out of each..They were portals. The strange thing about these portals was that they weren't giving out Hollow OR Shinigami Reiatsu..They were Quincy.
"Allow me to introduce you to my spirit weapon, gate of babylon."
-He snapped, sending three newly formed weapons rocketing toward Merrick's body. If he did not move properly, he would find himself quickly eliminated in this battle.
