After the events of “A New Threat to the World…”:
A massive explosion shakes the surface of the white desert. Its cause was, naturally, the infuriated hollow; D’gerik “Schrödinger” Blackheart. He had just blasted the sandstone mount to dust with a powerful, rage induced Cero as he cried “Accursed Shinigami! Interrupting my work even in the most remote regions of the human world and always besting me. Even a child; HOW did I let myself be matched, let alone BESTED by a child such as that one!”
The hollow, whom until now had yet to face a challenge like the boy, found himself at a boulder he couldn’t blast through; and nothing made him angrier than the thought of it at this very moment. “Horrid creature, to stop me when it was far too late for any human at that village and then insult me by calling for backup before the fight had even commenced when he had THAT ability. I cannot stand them, I cannot breathe the very air as they do without feeling like I am about to lose all control!” With that, he unleashed a powerful roar, sending lesser hollow fleeing, assuming it wasn’t enough to end their meager existence. Within that roar, D’gerik channeled all of his rage at once allowing him to slowly calm down and return to his senses. It was only natural; a wake-up call. It was a harrowing blow that brought to him the reality that was setting in all around him. The Wandenreich he had heard so much of over the past few months, The Shinigami, Fullbringers, even the Bount. Compared to all around him, he was far too weak. “My skills…. must further be honed…”

And so set out the hollow Wyvern. Deep down, he knew that his Cero was powerful, only that the boy’s power was enough to force his techniques aside. So he needed something else, something more… physical. “Yes of course… neither my cero, nor my bala, nor even my traps were able to pierce his shield, but his soul… It was mine to manipulate. This is perfect.” He said to himself. All of his studies up to this point were just about to become irrelevant. A new subject had just caught his mind, and he planned to pursue to the very end.
He now tranced through the twilight desert, searching for the perfect place. Hours upon hours, perhaps even days; who knew? Only D’gerik knew that at the end of his journey he had found it. It was a place of solitude, a place he could call his own not for life but instead for the cold embrace of death and destruction. There wasn’t another hollow about for many kilometers, feral or otherwise. The many sandstone pillars that stuck up from the solid baseplate separating its uniqueness from the sand, this was the place that D’gerik would use now until he was satisfied as his base of operations. For all intents and purposes, this was D’gerik’s new laboratory.

Elated was the hollow, knowing that so many days of searching were fruitful. But that was just the beginning, the tip of the proverbial iceberg. “Now…. it begins…” he spoke to himself once again as he sit his mark upon the location, making it clear that he would return. With that done, D’gerik turned and opened a garganta into the realm of the living.
Prison; it was a place D’gerik knew all too well. In life, one of his colleagues once suggested utilizing death-row inmates as test subjects. Everyone else on the board, including himself, concluded that to be a deranged thought. His colleague was later submitted to testing and found to be a clinical psychopath, promptly stripped of his medical license. Never could the brilliant scientist turned hollow have imagined that he would one day follow that advice. These inmates, souls most often destined to hell. They were perfect. Most often, he would wait for their executions, although sometimes he just didn’t have the patience. Over the course of months so many twisted souls were stolen from the clutches of hell only to be brought to something far worse. D’gerik would drag them into his dwelling, trapping them for use in his experiments. His ultimate goal being to improve and develop his ability to control a soul, to channel his power to another soul, or a husk, in the case of his clones; it was not unlike when he channeled his thoughts into the clones so that they could speak in his stead. Only, naturally, this was much, much harder. So often the process led to failure. Attempting to channel so much energy into a soul would often destroy the soul altogether, leaving nothing more but a trail of rotting chains to be rebuilt in hell to suffer for eternity… “Oh well… No sense in giving up now. I will just have to try again, and again, and again….”

And thus, D’gerik got to work. The number of souls torn to shreds by his power was impossibly large. Who knows how many weeks, or even months D’gerik spent tearing his new “home” apart. He knew he needed change. But he also knew, more importantly, that before change, he needed power – he needed to increase his own power and there was only one real way to do this, stretching his limits over and over and over until those limits became his normal. And then doing that again, and again, and again!
How many ragdolls were thrown about and tortured, impaled by his abilities over and over and over until they were of no use? Some of them even had power; potentially fullbringers that didn’t get a chance to unlock their full potential, but D’gerik didn’t care. His research into fullbringers would have to wait. The first day was one of the hardest, Many times he found failure in straining himself too far, leaving him tired after just a few minutes. The frustration was expected, and yet it still hit like a freight train – to the point where sometimes (More often than one might think) D’gerik would even take his anger out on a soul before being rid of it.
Time went on and failure after failure began to take its toll. D’gerik was losing faith in himself. Weeks of work were going to waste; weeks that could be put into furthering research! All the rage was welling up within D’gerik. The rage of feeling like a failure… the rage of BEING a failure; it was enough to drive any man or woman into complete lunacy!
And yet… D’gerik was different. Perhaps it was his memories? Perhaps it was his will to surpass his failures from when he was alive? It could even have been the pure rage itself fueling his hollow self into forcing himself further and further.

So what was next? How after so much failure could he continue? To him it was simple. It was the same way he got so far to begin with; rest, practice, repeat, over and over until the goal was achieved. And so he continued – days at a time before resting some.
Naturally, it was only a matter of time before the soul society found out about D’gerik’s little escapades in capturing the souls of the dead; and it was only a matter of time before they began to send members after him. At first, it was small-fry. Nothing that D’gerik couldn’t handle was thrown his way. A few dozen failed attempts changed things, however. Someone in the Soul Society had decided that it was no longer an intelligent move to send low-ranking Shinigami in his direction. The man they sent after him this time was no lieutenant, wasn’t third, fourth, fifth, or even sixth seat. But they chose carefully which squad would go after him. Perhaps the record of Moeru’s encounter was linked to him? It was entirely possible that somehow the Soul Society figured out that the hollow that was kidnapping freshly killed souls was also the same hollow that Moeru had encountered in the ruined village some time ago. Whatever the case, it was the only logical choice. It was the only kind of Shinigami that could definitively match…. Kidō Corps.

It happened just as he exited his Garganta outside of the prison. Being a maximum security for death row inmates, it was an incredibly remote location at the edge of a sheer cliff that dropped into a violent ocean tide below, which meant that the Shinigami did not have to hold back – especially after having hidden the original prison in a very similar manner to the hiding of karakura town, not that D’gerik knew about that at all. Regardless, D’gerik did not suspect it and – were it not for the distance the attack was launched from, and the clear as day incantation: ”Hadō #54. Haien!”
His reflexes could only have been so sharp because of all the time he spent training all of his senses – and yet even with that, the attack nearly connected, something that would have been absolutely terrible. What exactly? He didn’t know; but the raw power being exerted from the explosion that followed the attack was enough to warn D’gerik to pay more attention and not be hit by such an attack at all.
His cover now blown, the Shinigami revealed himself.
“I’ll be honest, after I was told how difficult it was for you to deal with another kidō user, I’m surprised you managed to dodge that… Fourth Division, Kidō Corps: Kobashigawa, Rei. I believe you know exactly why I’m here, Hollow…” to which D’gerik abruptly corrected “D’gerik ‘Schrödinger’ Blackheart. I know exactly why you’re here. You aren’t the first. Only this time, you will certainly be the last.” He expressed in such an uncaring was as his clones appeared at his sides, spreading apart to give him a positional advantage. How unfortunate that both of the clones upon reaching position were swiftly snuffed out. There was no incantation, no motions of any kind. This could only have meant a trap, D’gerik figured, the entire battlefield must have been turned into a minefield by the Shinigami!

The Shinigami began a monologue that D’gerik figured only hollow were capable of, and yet here he was, listening to Rei boasting about how skilled he was at kidō traps, at his prodigious abilities for his age and lack of training. This, D’gerik was sure would be his downfall – as during the monologue, D’gerik was busy formulating a plan, and one that was far easier to accomplish than he suspected. The Shinigami made very clear that the traps were specifically chosen to counter D’gerik’s clones, to thin his numbers. This would have set the hollow off were it not a part of his plan.
“Me? Trapped by you? You make me laugh. I’ll have you know that you’re far more outnumbered than you could have ever imagined…”
“Truly you jest, hollow. I’m done with you. Now die!!” It was a surge of attacks, one after the other, D’gerik would continually bounce between the points he had memorized as being safe, where the traps had already been triggered. His speed and avoidance annoying the Shinigami and distracting him to the fact that as he did so, those traps were slowly but surely being triggered by more and more clones that continued to take the place of the prior ones. This was increasing the space that D’gerik had available to dodge, and the Shinigami was inadvertently revealing more spots as D’gerik combined his tactic along with continuous flurries of bala, forcing the Shinigami to dodge into places he hadn’t trapped or risk focusing exclusively on shielding himself from a veritable machine gun of bala.

Mere minutes had passed since the battle had commenced. And the battlefield was becoming clearer and clearer. There was enough room for D’gerik to come comfortably and ever closer to his opponent. This sent Rei into a panic. His moments were clumsier; his aim was far more erratic which made him easier to dodge. What’s more, this also meant that the Shinigami was not paying attention as well as he should have been, and as the battle went on, D’gerik eventually stopped commanding his clones to take down the traps, and instead fake it by firing bala at the ground to mimic the explosions.
By this point in time D’gerik was merely toying with his opponent, wanting him to run about and panic more, and reveal any trump cards he had left. After some time, something became evident to D’gerik, and he made his discovery quite clear. “Your specialty is clearly kido, Kobashigawa Rei, but you’ve already reached your limit, haven’t you?” The face that Rei made was less than subtle. D’gerik continued, “You had already activated your shikai before I arrived, granting a powerful ability that makes you little more than a long range fighter, right? That’s why you’re panicking so much isn’t it? That’s why the thought of me being so close to you is sending you into such a fearful rut?!” He cried out, using the fear his opponent was feeling against him, and it was working so beautifully

Finally, the time came, D’gerik was tired of playing around, but he still had to commit to just one more experiment. “There!” He called out as one of his clones moved to intercept, and successfully caught the Shinigami, sending him into an even more fearful fury than before. “Let me go! Let me go!” cried Rei as he began to flail. Suddenly, D’gerik’s eye sockets formed a glowing, deep Cyan eye. “Siete Vicios; Apatía” without much warning that could be responded to, the two clones holding the Shinigami began to glow as Cyan colored flow of reiatsu began to flow into D’gerik’s opponent. Rei continued flailing, but even though his panic remained, he slowly slowed his flailing to a near halt, looking incredibly pained by something. This was it. At last, D’gerik had fully turned the tables. It was now time for the hunter to become the hunted…
“Y… You bastard… w-what did you do? What is the cause of s-such intense pain!?” D’gerik cackled maniacally “You cretins are all the same; as bad as humans!!” With that the clones tossed the Shinigami aside. Because the clones did not use much force it wasn’t impossible for the Shinigami to not recover, but as he did it would feel as though his bones had become terribly brittle, as though they were suddenly all coated in hairline fractures. He cried out in pain, only able to find solace when standing still. “W-what is this?” Begged Rei, searching desperately for an answer to the cause of his torture that he just couldn’t seem to find until finally D’gerik explained “Did the soul society really think that I would have spent so long kidnapping souls for no real reason? Did the records from my duel with that boy fail to mention what I was doing in the first place at that village? No matter then... now it’s far too late. Do you like it? It is the result of my latest experiment in power. How ironic that I could get to test it against a trap master like you… Movement is pain for you under the effects of my ability. You must stand still for an allotted time-frame to be free of this curse. Which means that since you’re alone you’re a sitting duck!” The clones suddenly exploded, tearing into several dozen fragments and scattering everywhere in the nearby vicinity. These fragments absorbed into the ground as D’gerik simultaneously charged forwards, his massive claws brandished like the sharpest blade imaginable. Rei acted on instinct, moving out of the way, causing incredible pain as he did; his steps heavy as though an open wound were paralyzing him to a degree. Upon landing his foot, the ground began to shake. The Shinigami had no other warning, he tried to jump away, but his movements had become sluggish thanks to the pain. From the ground where one of the bone fragments had landed a spike of bone stabbed upwards and into his foot before he managed to get away entirely. Rei cried out, straining every muscle in his body to try and strong-arm his way through the pain, but it wasn’t enough…

“It’s over!” called out D’gerik, cackling as he slammed into the helpless Shinigami, tossing him around like a ragdoll, knowing that every last bit of movement was nothing but pain for the poor fool. Several minutes of essential torture would ensue by this for Rei, not being allowed to stay still at all until every last bit of fight was ached out of him, leaving him on the verge of collapse.
The battle was long over. D’gerik held the dying Shinigami in his massive, skeletal hand still enough for the effects to wear off, although by now it was far too late, for the Shinigami known as Rei Kobashigawa had no fight left in him now. “This world… it is about evolving to surpass your opponents…” began the hollow to speak “Your petty gods of death assumed that I was unaware of this and, in doing so doomed you from the start. Perhaps if you had found me earlier before I had a chance to surpass you, you would have stood a chance… I have no further use for you. You have assisted me thoroughly in testing the extent of what I have learned and I am grateful for this. As thanks, your death shall be quick” he promised, despite how slow and painful everything until now had been which only really meant that the only thing he would do to make death quick was to go ahead and put the Shinigami out of his misery. He finally ended by saying “Goodbye, Kobashigawa Rei. You have proven a most worthy test subject…” finally dropping the shinigami from his grasp down to the ground where he landed with a thud. The very same ground began to shake from several points as D’gerik watched his wide-eyed opponent take his last breath, exhaled as multiple spikes of bone flew up from where they had set up, rupturing and impaling any and all vital organs and nerves including the man’s spine. Death was instant… D’gerik left Rei in such a state as a message for the Shinigami to stumble upon when he failed to show up. A message that he was a hollow not to be taken lightly, that he was smarter than most, keeping his sentience in spite of his sorry state, and a message that when it came to the Shinigami; no mercy would ever be found at his hands. The glow now gone from his eye sockets, D’gerik had no more reason to remain any longer, he turned heel and began to walk away, a garganta opening before him allowing him to step through and fade away from Earth for a good long while…
