“A way to suppress his flow of reiryoku? I mean I don’t think I have anything specific in mind. I could try and disrupt it with my own, but that would require me having to keep it in check. I won’t be able to assist with anything else in the procedure. Especially with intensity it seems this power is flowing sporadically.” Hayato said a bit concerned and interested in what Mana might have up her sleeve, she was one for little words unless they needed to be said, that much Hayato had learned from their last mission together.
Hayato then turned his attention to his patient who now was more open with them then before. Giving them much information on the circumstances that had led them to where they currently were. The situation, the hollow attack that killed his brother leaving his Zanpakuto allowing Jirou to obtain it, all of it seemed almost impossible with the timing. However at the same time, it did seem as though Jirou wasn’t lucky at all, he had suffered his own loses and now on top of the battle he had been fighting for so long it was possible this disease, whatever it might be had infected him as well.
All of it was looking rather grim, a bit of a mess of, more and more information kept coming to light to both Mana and Hayato, however despite all of it something ate away at Hayato. In the back of his mind he couldn’t help but think this was just the start that all of this time they were wasting all of this effort, that it might be for nothing that all of it would have rippling effects that none of them were aware of. Try and he might Hayato pushed all of that out of his mind it still remained at the back always eating it away.
“So, how do you want to proceed?” Hayato spoke calmly, despite wrestling with his own mental state, as he looked at Mana.
Hayato nodded to Jirou though in recognition of his final request, if they were unable to help him further. It was always better to nod and acknowledge someone, even if you weren’t sure if such a thing would be possible, it if anything for the time calmed them down some.

Unacceptable Mana put on her best professionally neutral tone, covering a considerable spike in annoyance. Part of it was distaste for despair, part of it was her ego's frustration against the idea of simply giving up, and part of it was simply a desire to keep the situation quarantined. Wandering the streets of Soul Society, even the less used ones, was just asking for further infection. And even in the human world (which would necessitate the spread through the very frequented Senkaimon gates), if a hollow DID finish him (and thus empower an enemy of the state), it might spread the disease far and wide. It could become a true pandemic, in the worst case scenario.
You are not gone just yet, nor do we have any reason to strengthen our enemies or spread this further. There are treatments we have yet to attempt that may yet yield better results, so please simply be patient. Left unsaid was the idea that if he was one of the casualties, his body would be far more useful as a means of testing treatments for the still living. Despite her attempt to refine her empathy, her traditionally pragmatic nature was still in the undercurrents. It was likely that as a 12th division member, he was smart enough to realize it anyway.
Turning to Hayato, Mana pursed her lips at the revelation. Without specialized tools, this would be very difficult, perhaps contrary to the overall objective. If two conflicting reiatsu were causing a weakening, a third might be catastrophic. Although with your finese...maybe. It would be delicate, and as you say, it could be done. Perhaps we should do it in reverse? I'm skilled enough with kido to perhaps alter the flows, but your medical skill far surpasses my own for the actual treatment half. She didn't trust her very rudimentary ability in this regard. Surgery was not something you could do with only a few hours practice she'd had so far and there was little time. No, best she give her best effort now. A life was on the line. Quietly, she eased her zanpactou out of the sheath on her side. Shikai for long periods wasn't really good for the stamina she'd needed thus far, but now they needed an edge.
Cast a spell, Higi.... Sword became crystal-tipped staff, which she promptly tapped on the ground.
Pirust, the Pulse's Whisper, you are called to serve. Using Deva Conjuration, she fashioned a deva of health, a tiny thing that could comfortably sit on one's shoulder. While it didn't have the power to banish the disease, it could at least give an edge to someone who could fight it. The creature, which appeared to be a floating sphere of water with surprisingly gentle red eyes, looked up at Mana, then Hayato.
You will assist us in this matter. Help us heal as many as you can. It abilities were mostly constrained to that of a surgical assistant with a smigen of medical magic, but hopefully it would be worth the reiryoku. She hoped Hayato agreed with doing the actual operation himself. She couldn't manage that on her own, but hopefully she could keep the flows of the contradictory reiatsu from hindering the more skilled medic's work.
OOC: With Ezzy's departure, we'll have to go with the original plan for the thread where his character becomes Crux's first casualty. [/div]

Unacceptable…
If anything Mana was blunt, though it was clear she tried to make it sound as neutral as possible, though in the medical field neutrality wasn’t always the best of options. It was clear that letting Jirou out into the public was not a possibility by a long shot, but when you had patients in situations such as his where the outcome was unknown it was best to simply agree with them, it gave them a sense of peace and calming knowing that their wishes would be accommodated, even if that wasn’t possible in the end.
Hayato sighed a bit as Mana spoke more. It was true Mana had the right idea, she was strong minded and knew the appropriate course of actions that needed to be taken, but when it came to people skills it seemed she was a bit lacking. Definitely something that Hayato would have to mention at a later date if they got around to treating other patients like originally intended, perhaps though it was simply something that would have to come with time having not been exposed to this kind of atmosphere before now.
“I suppose if we did reverse it. You altering the flow of his reiatsu although you aren’t skilled in it, you do have like you said much skill with kido in general which should provide you some help in the area. You need to be careful though and only introduce enough of your own reiatsu to reverse his flow anymore and you could risk adverse effects. If you are able to succeed in that as I think you could, we’ll be a little closer to solving this mystery hopefully.” Hayato said calmly as he looked at Mana.
Hayato watched carefully as Mana then released her zanapkauto the blade turning more into a scepter or staff and promptly went into another technique. A small floating ball of what appeared to be water appeared, having little other features then some unusual yet kind feeling red eyes. It was interesting and Hayato had not seen this specific creatures before, at least that he could remember. The chances though were that she was not limited to simply this type, possibly multiple different kinds for any given situation. This specific one seemingly used for healing or maintaining one’s health.
Hayato took a deep breath, exhaling slowly before speaking his tone calm yet at the same time serious, “Whenever you are ready. Let us hope this works as well as we plan.”
Hayato had confidence in their plan, however when the disease was unknown as well as almost all information on it, plans could only go so far.
There are no limitations. Only ignorance demands otherwise.
It appeared that Hayato agreed with her assessment of the situation, which she was happy to hear. While he probably could exceed her in terms of halting reiatsu flows, she could probably manage well enough. In the reversed scenario, while he might be able to hold the flow better, her surgical skill was functionally non-existent. To open up a body without even a proper theoretical understanding of what she was doing, she might as well just start hacking at him with her zanpactou. That would at least kill him comparatively painlessly. No, far better to play to both their strengths and let Hayato take the scalpel. Without further ado, they arranged for one of the operating rooms to be prepped before getting ready themselves. Sterilization procedures were fairly involved, as one might expect. The two of them (and much of the rest of the division) were up to their necks in microbes and soap alone wasn't going to cut it before attempting the surgery. Chemical and mystic methods took nearly an hour before they emerged into the room with their patient. He was, if anything, working even worse. Splotches on the skin indicated blood pools beneath the skin, which (aside from being intensely dangerous in and of itself) would make gathering data even more difficult. Were it not for the existence of healing kidou, Mana would likely have written him off entirely. As it was, it would still be monstrously difficult. Stepping into the cramped room, the kidoushu member steeled herself for what would follow. Good thing she had no real problem with blood.
Holding her hands several inches above Jirou, she closed her eyes and focused almost exclusively on her reiatsu senses. Her full kidou would be of little use here, but outside of combat, there was some room for experimentation. Her binding arts could be modified with her Arcanum ability, which seemed the best option. Locking Binding Strips was her only real direct lockdown ability. Filtering it through her still released shikai, she modified its nature. Now, instead of holding someone in place with mystic chains, it did so by holding their reiryoku flows nearly completely. Halting the flow entirely would kill him of course, but this lesser strategy should be workable. The magic took hold, perhaps without as much finesse as she might like, but it froze Jirou's energies fairly well, for as long as it lasted. Best to hurry from here.
Bindings are in place. I'll try and keep it in place as long as I can. It's in your hands now, sensei.

The sterilization process and room preparations took longer than Hayato had anticipated. He himself had to also go through a rigorous amount of sterilization and cleaning in order to prep himself for the task at hand. Hayato knew that despite all his knowledge and skill this certainly wasn’t going to be something that would be easily handled. They still did not know the full extent of the disease or how it progress only the symptoms that may become present. It was tough, definitely one of the toughest situations that Hayato had ever been placed in and things did not look like they were going to get any better.
Finally the two of them, Hayato and Mana, entered into the operating room to find Jirou there already, his skin having dark spots of what Hayato assumed were blood that had pooled beneath the skin, he was looking worse by the minute and it certainly didn’t seem like there was much of a chance for a miraculous recover. If this were to go by successfully then certainly it would only be quite the road of recovery for him.
The room itself was small, as were many of the operating rooms, however the numerous times in the place had preconditioned Hayato in how to effectively and efficiently move around the area without causing much of any issues, though certainly the first few times he had done it, it was quite the challenge.
Hayato watched as Mana worked, waiting quietly and preparing himself mentally for when his part of all of this would arrive. She worked quickly and it seemed efficiently as well. Hayato moved forward as Mana gave him word that the bindings were in place.
Hayato would work quickly as possible while still remaining as in control and delicate to all the situations that would occur. He had much training as of late and the amount of time he had been putting in at the hospital only added to his strength. He however wasn’t sure what he would do if he came across something that would stop him in his tracks, if there was any case though this certainly would be the one to do just that.
Note sure how you wanted me to go about the surgery, but I just left it kind of vague in order to make it so I didn't step anywhere you didn't want me to, but let me know if you need it changed.

Mana might not have a trained medical eye, but a single look on the inside showed signs of corruption so extensive that the Otsuki was at a loss for how the patient had managed to endure so long. Swelling, extensive fluid buildup in lungs and the cavities, the blood looked more purplish black than red...Crux was apparently not only fast working, it was fast spreading and extremely invasive as well. Mana was suddenly incredibly grateful that Hayato had agreed to take over the actual operation aspect. She wouldn't know where to begin and would likely manage to kill the poor man before doing any good whatsoever. That was actually looking to be the most likely outcome of all this, really. While trying to hold the reiatsu and reiryoku flows in place as best she could to stop the interference, she paid very close attention to what her mentor was doing. Once you got over the initial distaste at what was happening, watching a near-master at work was tremendously informative. With the earlier summoned deva's assistance, Hayato was given sufficient time to take it slow and steady, which made watching and understanding much simpler. Draining excess fluid, foreign tissue excision (to what little extent that was possible without slicing too deep), chemical treatments...They worked for nearly two hours, taking only the most momentary of pauses to maintain focus.
Is still wasn't enough. Vitals began dropping at a worrying rate and while they had managed to learn a thing or two about Crux's spread and chemical sensitivities (and, in Mana's case, about general surgical procedure), when they stitched their patient back up, it became evident that he had less than a day to live. It was horribly depressing, but at least they could take some comfort in the idea that their gains might be enough to staunch the flow of the condition amongst the rest of 4th division's halls. As they were cleaning up afterward, Mana began to process the new information alongside Higi's previous suggestion. Frankly, Mana was now certain that this was not at all a natural substance. Watching Hayato made her convinced that normal diseases would have been crushed. No, this was engineered. To what end? General death and destruction? An experiment? A bio-weapon on the loose? Not certain of the answers, Mana decided to take a step outside her usual secrecy and begin sharing her opinion with her tutor. She spoke as they were washing their hands. She didn't turn to face him.
I'm certain you noticed the sheer abnormality of this situation. I believe we may safely rule out natural occurrence. This was fashioned, which makes it a weapon. But for who?
Post by Hayato Takeda on Aug 14, 2015 15:05:23 GMT
Hayato, having stitched up his patient, slowly in his mind began to contemplate all the information that they had received. It was clear to him that this Crux as it was called was a rather invasive and nasty creation that took over and destroyed the host’s body from within. The severe amount of damage and oddities found within his patient were well beyond what he had ever witnessed before himself and it was far more than he had been hoping to process at this point.
Multiple samples of tissue and blood were sent for analysis and more in depth research that could not be done simply on the spot. Most all of this had been knew to Hayato, the procedures routine and simple, or as simple as things of this nature get, but the findings were without word to describe. It seemed acertain though that this man had little time left to live, maybe a day, two at max, his systems were failing at an alarming rate and there was little that Hayato would even have been able to do.
Hayato let out a large sigh as Mana finished speaking, “Yes. It is without question more involved than anything I have seen before, a mere virus or infection would never have created something of such large proportions like this. It does seem like you said, that it must have been made, by who I myself couldn’t say, nor for who, though I don’t our patient here was the person who was intended to have the final product.”
Hayato could not keep his mind away from how soon, amongst all the trying and hoping they had done, their patient would soon meet his end. Although it was something Hayato dealt with on a daily basis, death that is, this was different. Jirou was infected not of his own carelessness or mistake, it would seem instead that he was a guiena pig for someone mad creation, whose purpose they could not determine yet. It enraged Hayato to a degree, there was enough dying left and right that putting the aspect of purposeful killing, potentially from within their own group, seemed outrageous, though the possibility still existed.
“I’m not sure where you would want to start from here. We’ve learned some information, but I’m not sure if any of it that we have will help us to back track it to a source or manufacturer. Unless of course something has escaped my eye amongst all of this procedure.” Hayato said slowly, trying to internally calm himself down amongst his own thoughts.

Mana scanned her brain swiftly for possible sources to cross reference with their current findings. The two that came to mind was 12th division and the Great Spirit Archive. Both were worrying. In the former case, 12th was frankly the most likely culprit, as long as Mayuri Kurotsuchi was involved. This might have been a wet-run test of some weapon that no doubt Central 46 would classify as "for the greater good". She disliked the idea that fellow shinigmi could do this, but it seemed the most likely result. If they were responsible, they couldn't be brought into this without careful thought. Even if they weren't behind this, their old results had been less than promising. Then again, they didn't have the updated research that Hayato and Mana had just obtained. The Great Spirit Archive was more complicated. As one of the Otsuki family who safeguarded and maintained the records, she had greater access than just about anyone, but surely she would have heard about something like this if it had happened before. Her tutors had made certain she knew about the great disasters of Soul Society and this seemed to fit the bill too much to not have been covered. No, this was likely new and unique. Plus, parsing all that data themselves would be a monstrous undertaking. No, it looked like 12th really was the better option for now. She'd just have to keep things on the down-low, keep it from getting to the riskiest culprit at the top. There were a few lower level members she'd met once or twice. Perhaps that would be the place to start? No, not just yet. One thing came first.
I have an acquaintance or two in 12th division. They can be discrete, I suspect. Before we go, you noted that shriveling reaction with the fifth formula? We should perhaps put together an emergency treatment plan with that, slow the progress enough to buy us time to research. She hoped it could be done quickly, at least. Hayato would know better than she. She figured Hayato would be able to determine the need for discretion well enough, so she didn't expound on her point about the 12th division. Part of her didn't even want to mention the possibility that they might be duped into all this.

Hayato waited patiently, it had seemed that Mana was concentrating to an extreme level. Hayato had seen the look before, it was similar to any of the higher level fourth squad members while they performed a more complex procedure. What was currently going on was all that was important to them, they become so focused on it that everything else around them seemed to fade away. It was certainly an interesting thing to witness, but on top of that it showed even more how similar people were despite their backgrounds.
All the while Hayato waited for Mana to speak though, he himself was contemplating the manner, it was clear there was no saving their current patient, he was most likely going to pass, however at the same time that didn’t mean his passing had to be for nothing. It was now a race to figure out what was going on and where this came from for the two of them, however at the same time he knew they couldn’t make all the details extremely public especially with their suspicions that this was a man-made creation. The twelfth squad would be a likely guess, anyone outside of the squad maybe even in the squad seemed to get an uncertain and creepy vibe from Captain Kurotsuchi. Experimenting with modifications to ones body and using fellow Shinigami as guinea pigs certainly wouldn’t be outside of his realms of possibility. In all honesty though would something so violent and so potentially contagious be sanctioned to be used even in trial and in secret at that? At least the fourth should have been consulted in case of an issue like that.
Hayato’s ranting ended however as he heard Mana speak, it seemed as though she was inclined to investigate into the twelfth squads involvement or information at least they may have gathered on this situation. It seemed like a solid plan, and lucky that Mana had some contacts, because Hayato could not say the same by any means.
“Yes that seems like the best course of action, at this point any information we can get would benefit us.” Hayato said calmly as he continued to listen to Mana. “As for an emergency treatment plan, it will be a little more involved I think, but I suppose you’re right about the fifth formula, if anything it will probably buy us some time. I can prepare some of it. What I can prepare though won’t help us if this goes wide spread, isolated cases will be our best hope at this point, without having to involve too many people into what is happening. Shall I do that as you gather information from your contacts?” Hayato asked with an air of curiosity. Though he wanted to know more on these “contacts” of Mana’s he knew he was in no position to pry in on Mana like that.
There are no limitations. Only ignorance demands otherwise.
Mana nodded at Hayato's point. It made sense that it would take some time before a proper treatment plan could be created, much less administered to the group. Still, the instructions Hayato would leave would help others make more of the only option they really had at this stage. She followed behind as he went about his business, paying as much attention to what he was doing as she could while she worked on the standard-issue shinigami phone. A quick text to her first contact, asking to meet at their usual spot. The individual in question, Suri, was a bit of a bibliophile and they had regularly met at a local cafe to discuss their mutual love of books. It would arouse the least suspicion talking to her, as they'd met before in that same place, for the same subject. Even if someone was watching their texts, which 12th probably was given they maintained the network, it would look normal. Once they met away from the division, it would be possible to discuss things in relative privacy and maybe gain access to her two other known members.
Once that was sent out, she focused more exclusively on her temporary mentor. Odds weren't bad that she'd have to do this herself some time in the near future. Sure, actually proscribing a treatment wasn't something a new medic should do, but some of the process was more comprehensible and the organizational factor was definitely something she would be able to help with if she was called upon, provided she understood 4ths system. That was what she was trying to pick up at this stage; understand the structure, you can understand the individual parts much more effectively.

Hayato quickly began work, gathering the necessary chemicals and ingredients….well chemical…drugs…it all depended on your combfortablility with the words, they were pretty much the same, though people weren’t often too content with being told they were going to have chemicals pumped through their body. That was beside the point though of course what Hayato needed to focus on now was creating the drugs that could potential save lives, or at least halt the death of lives for them to possibly save them. As he worked, mixing this drug with that to simulate the creation that was noted to have some minor effects, he made sure to keep what he was doing easily viewable for Mana who he expected would want to watch in case she herself needed to work through this at a later time if Hayato was indisposed.
It was clear Mana was smart, she just needed to learn the ways and methods of the fourth squad, she could easily enough manage through the list of drugs needed to make this cocktail and could easily produce it if the time came, she just needed to watch some of the more minor nuisances to it that weren’t as plain as day, line by line reading couldn’t convey. Carefully mixing and timing of slow integration of the drugs so that they blended and came together with ease. It was in a sense, graceful in how it all came together slowly, many parts making one whole thing better than itself, there had to be some kind of analogy in that for sure. Slowly but surely he had begun mixed together the various chemicals more, coming to the end of the creation, it had been roughly an hour, maybe a bit shorter, but their first batch seemed to be coming to finish. The longer time this took to create certainly meant that in a desperate state they would not be able to rely on making it, but needed to rather make sure they had enough or at least enough that they felt comfortable with, on hand.
“It needs to rest now for a few moments. For the most part it should be all complete, following the drug cocktail reciepe in those notes seems to be our only hope. It seems Jirou was at least somewhere in the ball park of creating something to help him, which is a positive sign. Certainly it means if it can be slowed that it can eventually be stopped.” Hayato said calmly, pausing for a brief moment before speaking again, “Though how long it can delay the what is right now inevitable might be hard pressed to say, depending on how long someone has been exposed.”
“Have you gotten anything from your contacts that might be of use to us?”
There are no limitations. Only ignorance demands otherwise.
Mana seated herself after the treatment was more or less put together for now. It was a considerable relief that any progress had been made at all. Not...everyone had come through, but far better that some were lost than everyone. She had the suspicion that, if this wasn't contained, the whole of the Seireitei would be at risk. If they all fell ill (or just plain fell) the whole balance was a threat. This had to be stopped, and soon. Hours of work took their toll, however. Eyes began to droop, and while her mind was still active, her body was screaming for rest that she didn't have time to provide. Even an hour of sleep would cost lives.
Yes, I've managed to make contact. There's a cafe we sometimes meet at. She'll be there shortly, as we should be....provided my eyes don't shut. What I wouldn't give for a stimulant right now... The thought of a stimulant brought to mind a hot cup of tea, a crackling fireplace and a good book in an old chair, something she made a habit of doing every once in a while. The thought brought a nostalgic smile to her face, in spite of all this. Yes, later. Solve mystery, fight disease, help Hayato save world, then tea. The injection of even that small amount of normalcy into all the stress was nice. Not all that functional, but soothing. Mana had little doubt the two of them could find the answers they sought. The time frame was the only real problem. Forcing herself up, she made herself ready to head on to their contact. It was time to go on the offensive.
OOC Note: It's about time we go from medical drama to mystery. As I said when the thread was first proposed, this'll be a two parter, so now would seem the ideal junction point (after your post) to close this thread and get the next one started

“Good, now we can get somewhere, or at least hopefully.” Hayato said calmly as Mana finished speaking.
It seemed as though they would be well on their little game of mysteries now trying to solve the origins of this mysterious disease as it were. It was certainly potent and different from anything Hayato had seen before in his time with the fourth squad. It’s potential could be devastating, ultimately severely upsetting the balance of everything. Though maybe that had been the point? Was someone possibly trying to upset the balance, but for what means? Did it even make sense to do that? There were so many questions they had no answers to yet, all the partners in mystery could do now was meet with their informant and try and discover anything they could as to what this all meant.
“Yeah some kind of pick me up would be great right now, but we need to get going, maybe if we’re lucky we can grab something at this café if we have the time of course.” Hayato said calmly, smiling slightly trying to lift up the mood. It was going to be a long day, and long days until this was all solved Hayato knew it and he knew Mana most likely felt it as well, all they could do was move on and solve this mystery it’s all they could hope to do in this desperate journey.
