The last time Kaori had been here, she had been given the order to find the original Substitute Shinigami, and meet him. The female wasn't quite sure what she had been expecting when she met the one Ichigo Kurosaki, but what the male had been was not what Kaori was expecting. In a way, the female was reminded of her own lieutenant Renji Abarai, with the male's brashness and laid back personality. It was familiar, and in a way, it had been refreshing. Kaori was serious, all business, the 'role model' of the Crisis Core. And yet, she was so unlike the being who had been the reason she was given the powers she held now.
Why Kuchiki-taichou wanted her to meet the orange haired substitute, Kaori had an idea, but it was only half formed, and it wasn't a puzzle piece that fit exactly together. There were many reasons the female guessed at, but instead of allowing herself to worry over the captain's reasonings, the female decided it would be best to hear it from the male himself.
After stating her presence (likely not necessary considering she did not hide her spiritual pressure) and receiving the affirmative to enter, the female did as instructed, and waited by the door for what the captain would command next.

KUCHIKI BYAKUYA . Sixth division TAICHOU . HEAD OF THE NOBLE KUCHIKI CLAN YOU THINK YOURSELF MY EQUAL WHEN IN TRUTH YOU AREN'T EVEN CLOSE TO MY LEVEL [keepkeep]
Today, like most days in the Seireitei lately, was a day without rest for the Captain of the Sixth Division, busily doing his paperwork and running errands that required his immediate attention. For some it might seem far too much for a single person to handle, but Byakuya was well acclimated to this kind of thing. So when his Substitute Shinigami Representative had first approached him he made sure to do so in a timely manner, and though she was very well versed in politics and mannerisms she lacked battle experience and the knowledge required to do her job properly. Captain Kurotsuchi might've been skilled but even so conditioning the body to respond to certain queues was harder than some might think, as Byakuya's own combat expertise would state. One had to be able to both think on the fly as well as make calculated precise decisions in a fractions of a fraction of a second if they wished to survive on the battlefield, sure her Reiatsu was impressive but without proper training it would simply flop when push came to shove. His goal, when sending her to meet Ichigo Kurosaki, was to try and teach her that just because she had power didn't mean she was ready for field combat and that simply being too up-tight would end up hindering you more than helping. Lessons that Byakuya himself learned from Ichigo what felt like an eternity ago.
A very different Byakuya now sat in the chair as he allowed Kaori entrance, entrance that he granted before she spoke who she was, a Byakuya that at one point wouldn't of even been a possibility if it hadn't been for Ichigo. But now as she entered and he directed her to sit down he said nothing, instead he had a very familiar set of papers inside of a folder sitting on his desk. Once she was seated he carefully slid the folder over to the girl without a single word, if she took it and opened it she would see the same files from before staring back at her, the same pictures the same everything. That is... with the exception of the very final piece of paper. On it were two very delicate and carefully sentences.
"After carefully monitoring Mejiro Kaori, Substitute Shinigami Representative of the Rokubantai, I, Byakuya Kuchiki, personally affirm that she has all of the potential required to make an excellent asset and ally to Soul Society."
Such was the first sentence, one that Byakuya had written himself after monitoring Kaori's progress with Ichigo... However the second sentence was far less kind and very obviously meant for Kaori's eyes.
"Unfortunately battle experience is severely lacking, training will need to be increased as a result. Demeanor and Outlook also need work, Whilst seriousness in the face of mortal peril is good too much can be a bad thing."
Once she was finished reading Byakuya would finally speak "That is my report after monitoring your progress with Kurosaki Ichigo. I have yet to submit it however, Your potential for greatness rivals even the lieutenants and that is not something I say lightly. From here on I shall be personally looking after your combat training, your mannerisms are good however your demeanor needs adjustment. Kurosaki Ichigo is the reason I sit here as I am today, more importantly he is the reason you are here before me. You owe much to him and you would be remiss to forget it. Before I say anymore however, Tell me in your own words. What did you learn from your encounter with Kurosaki Ichigo?"
This was her true test, this would determine just how apt she was at learning on the fly. He had given her everything she needed, told her exactly where she needed to improve in... But at the same time, would she realize exactly what these words meant? Could she interpret what Byakuya was trying to teach her? To find the answer... She needed to look no further than the man who now sat before her. As she was she was much like how Byakuya was before meeting Ichigo, what she needed to learn was to become less like him and more like the man she sat before now. However not exactly alike, such a thing would simply not be what Byakuya was trying to instill, but rather she needed to find a balancing point between who she is now and who she could become.
So I will take this burden on and become the holy one
After taking a seat, the raven haired captain wasted no time passing a folder over to the female, who took it and flipped through the pages quickly. She skimmed over each page, recognizing it as a folder she had already seen. Flipping through it page by page, nothing struck her as changed with it, until she flipped the last page. Kaori paused when she reached the handwritten letter, and reread the words three times, making sure she understood everything completely. Her face remained neutral as the words registered, and Kaori did not let the criticism affect her. Ever since she was a young child, her father had drilled over and over to take criticism with a grain of salt. If it held merit, then it was worth consideration, if not, then it was not worth your time.
Battle training Kaori understood. She had many a spar with several different Shinigami, and even some of her Crisis Core comrades as well. But friendly spars, without the risk of death, was far different than actual combat experience. That however, was something Kaori could not remedy, not without there being a large enough threat to either world. She'd fought and slain many Hollows, but none of them had been particularly challenging for her. The spars she had with other Shinigami had been more fierce.
It was her demeanor and especially her outlook that had Kaori confused. The female did not know what the Soul Society had been like before Ichigo's emergence in its world, and so the flaws that had once plagued the Seireitei but had since been ironed out was something the female wasn't experienced with. She knew that there were things the Soul Society could certainly change for the better, but she was only half Shinigami, and it was not her place to speak of the changes that could be made. Maybe one day when she died and reincarnated into a Shinigami she could strive to change what needed fixing, but right now Kaori's focus had to be the World of the Living more so than the Soul Society.
"Kurosaki Ichigo was... not what I expected." Kaori started out slowly, trying to think ahead on how she wanted to phrase her assessment of the original substitute. "In many ways, he reminds me of Lieutenant Abarai. Had I not been able to feel the spiritual pressure from him," and Kaori had felt it practically oozing off the man, "I would have thought he someone else entirely, and not the one who stormed the Soul Society and brought the rogue captain Aizen to his knees."
The female was silent for several seconds afterwards, her eyes trained off to the side as she deliberated silently within her head. Byakuya was deliberate, he would never ask a question such as the one he had done without there being a reason behind it. There was a lesson here, but Kaori could not figure out what it was. She knew its direction, but where exactly it lay, Kaori could find find it. "Kuchiki-taichou," the female started, her gaze returning to the male who sat before her, "What was the lesson Kurosaki-san taught you?"

KUCHIKI BYAKUYA . Sixth division TAICHOU . HEAD OF THE NOBLE KUCHIKI CLAN YOU THINK YOURSELF MY EQUAL WHEN IN TRUTH YOU AREN'T EVEN CLOSE TO MY LEVEL [keepkeep]
The lesson he taught Byakuya? "The lesson Kurosaki Ichigo taught me, It was a lesson in humility. Kurosaki Ichigo fights not for power, or for revenge, He fights to protect those he loves nothing more. When Soul Society took Rukia back, he chased after her irregardless of the danger that we posed to him. When the Arrancarrs took Orihime, He went to Heuco Mundo to try and save her. When Ginjo threatened him and his friends, After he had already taken almost every drop of Kurosaki Ichigo's Reiatsu he continued wanting to fight. Kurosaki Ichigo taught me many lessons over the course of his life already, But the most important lesson I've learned from him is that there is more to fight for than just laws and rules. He taught me that fighting because one threatens your loved ones is more important than trying to satisfy some customary rule. While I make no attempt to break the law, I have learned that there are ways to fight for your loved ones without doing so. That is what Kurosaki Ichigo taught me." Perhaps a little cryptic, perhaps not.
It was difficult to put into words exactly what Ichigo had taught him, So much had happened since he first met Ichigo. On that first meeting, Byakuya was miles ahead of him in terms of strength and experience.... But Ichigo somehow survived that encounter and managed to get his Shinigami Powers back and became one of the most powerful Shinigami in existence. "When I sent you to talk to Kurosaki Ichigo, I sent you because I wanted to see how you learned from him. I wanted to see where you would go. You're much like both of us, A human given Shinigami Powers, Yet your upbringing was similar to my own. You have a unique outlook on this situation, having the privilege to be raised similarly to both of us." Kaori's upbringing was one of nobility in comparison to Byakuya's, very similar to Byakuya's yet she was a human which lent her to perhaps thinking a bit more like Ichigo does. But how would Kaori utilize this information? If she became as strong as a Captain, as Byakuya suspected she could with proper training, what path would she fall down? Byakuyas? Ichigos? Aizens? Ginjos? There were so many possible outcomes to this scenario with Kaori that it made watching her all the more intriguing to say the least, besides Byakuya wanted to make sure she didn't fall into the slump that he was in wherein she fights only for the law and rules.
