[attr="class","aritext"]Pitter patter
Tiny drops of rain slapped against the metal roof of a house in Karakura Town, Japan. The storm had arrived overnight with high gusts of wind and a volley of rain. It shown no signs of slacking as it continued its onslaught on the town’s people. Arashi looked out the window of his house watching the people run trying to avoid the rain as best as possible. He sighed while watching a small child fall into a puddle right outside his house. ‘That hole could really be fixed.’ He thought to himself as the mother scooped her child into her arms.
He had lived in this house off and on for years now, back before he was a Shinigami this was his home. And now it was his home again. He had deserted his position at the Gotei Thirteen. Not that it was his original choice in the matter but it was the one he ended up with. Ever since then he had been in hiding, actively avoiding any contact with that group and making sure to not use his powers. Arashi wanted nothing more than to lay low for the time being to regather his thoughts in hopes to figuring out he could fix his problems.
The man no longer had a family as his fiancé vanished, his friends were gone, and a father figure dead for all he knew. He was alone once again, except for his comrades that he had left with on that day. He wasn’t sure if he could really trust those who took him in after his decision but they were his only option. He would need help if he did intend to run from the old guard that ran the Soul Society. A flash of lightning illuminated his home showing the dust building around his furniture, and the mess he left on the floor from the last couple of days.
He had no real motivation to keep up with his house or even with his appearance. He looked disheveled. His hair had grown out and was unkempt. His clothes were just as worse as he had neglected to do laundry for a few days. All he wore now was his old human clothes consisting of tennis shoes, jeans, and a random shirt he would pick out from the pile in his room. No one bothered him, so why would he bother looking nice?
He just continued to stare into the rain hoping it would wash away his problems. If only the world could be that simple..
The rain was beginning to get heavier in this part of town; not the most affluent, to say the least. Whereas the center of town was more compact and busy, buildings seemed a bit further apart here, and it seemed like the kind of place where even on clear days you wouldn’t see a lot of people on the streets. The blonde Visored walked calmly down the street, holding his umbrella over his head, wearing a white button-up shirt over tan pants, with his gray newsboy cap on his head. He glanced at his Denreishinki, the location he was seeking marked on the screen. He’d grabbed some info from the Twelfth Division before heading out on his self-assigned, personal mission. He wasn’t gonna let anyone else grab this one first, and soon enough surely the old man would be putting some kind of bounty or mission out on this idiot’s head.
The hell was he thinking, palling around with some assholes that cause chaos and destruction like that?
The blip on the screen began to blink faster as he got closer; he turned a corner and looked to where it was on the GPS-like map on his screen. In an area of fairly ordinary houses, this one was particularly unspectacular. Perhaps someday it had seen better days, but the pure, undeniable lack of care for its upkeep made it look abandoned several years now.
Yep, that was the place then. Reports said that this had been Arashi’s home before becoming a Shinigami several years ago. An impressive section of life, that must have been. But it did somewhat explain why he wasn’t in the indoctrinated mindset of the rest of the Gotei.
Which, in the Gobantai Taichou’s mind, was probably more of a good thing than bad. When he’d heard the reports of Arashi’s turncoat status, he immediately felt something off. He’d only met the guy briefly, but he didn’t seem the type that would put up with that kind of shit. Perhaps the Gobantai Captain could still make something good of this.
“Oi,” he said, knocking on the door without wasting any time as he came up to the building, “anybody home?”

[attr="class","arilyrics"]Welcome to the end of eras
[attr="class","aritext"]There was a pause in his train of thought when he heard a familiar voice and a knock at the front of his house. So he was found this quickly? He didn’t bother with looking out his window to see who it was. It was obvious that the voice belonged to only one man. Arashi turned the knob over, opening up the door to, Hirako Shinji. The blonde captain was standing on his front door step like he was just coming over for a visit. He was quick to observe his surroundings, noting that there didn’t seem to be anybody else there and that he was alone.
Of course his captain did have his own tricks that couldn’t be foreseen. So if he had anything hidden to surprise the man with he wasn’t able to sense it. “Cap’n, how can I help you?” He tried to mask any form of unease with a smile. It was something he had picked up by watching some of the other shinigami’s who liked to hide their true feelings. ‘If he is here to take me in this is going to be a long night.’ Arashi thought. There wasn’t going to be much he could do about it other than fight his captain.
There was however the other option. Arashi knew a bit of Hirako’s past. His situation was different though, he never betrayed the Gotei Thirteen like Arashi. No he had been betrayed by Aizen, the previous Gobantai Taichou. So he wasn’t too sure he would actually sympathize with him but stranger things could happen. After all his captain did seem to be more reasonable about things and would actually listen before rushing in head first. Unlike some of the other members of the gotei thirteen. If it was one of the others they would have already tried to start a fight with the man, but only time was going to answer the question he had.
The door opened, which almost caught the blonde Visored off-guard. He’d half expected him to have the sense not to open the door, but then again he seemed to lack the sense to avoid the most obvious place for him to be, so… well, whatever. Good he was here, for Shinji to find him first. Hopefully nobody else had thought fast enough to already have someone else on the way here; that would… complicate things. He looked into the house, past his subordinate, and took a look inside. Time away had taken its toll clearly, as the place looked just as messy if not more on the inside than its unkempt outside would’ve suggested.
The Gobantai Taichou was always one that was excessively perceptive, seemingly able to read one’s very thoughts, though not always the best at following up on it; of course, this wasn’t true, but he was exceptionally skilled at picking up on signs from body language to tone of voice to expression to simple mannerisms and beyond that were telling of a person’s true intentions or mood. He watched Arashi’s reaction, and everything read with tension and unease, but no fear. He either was convinced this would go well for him, or no longer cared whether it did or not.
Shinji wasn’t sure which he would prefer.
“Well, for starters,” he said nonchalantly, tilting his head back and gesturing towards the rain falling… well, all around him, “you can help me by letting your Captain in so he can get the hell outta the rain.” He paused for a moment, wondering what to consider Arashi at this point. Rules dictated him a traitor, but Shinji saw something else, and perhaps a potential for something even further than just ‘else’. “Or is that ‘former’ Captain, now?”

[attr="class","aritext"]“Yeah… come in.” He purposely avoided the question Shinji had proposed. He didn’t know what to really call him now, was he still his captain? If it was up to Soul Society he would be known as a traitor and treated as such. Then again he didn’t exactly feel like he was a traitor to their cause; he wanted the same thing they did. He wanted a peace and balance to the world. Arashi of course also wanted to keep those he cared about safe as possible. That was a bit trickery though compared to the goals of the gotei thirteen.
There was a small smile that crept on his face when he noticed how amusing this situation was. His captain was standing out there in the rain waiting to be let in while he just stood there. He decided to step to the side of the door way to allow Hirako in the house. “I don’t know what you’d prefer me to call you but I’d still consider you my captain.” He said half-heartedly as he walked over to his couch. “Be sure to shut that will you.” Arashi wasn’t afraid of what would come next but he only hoped that Hirako wouldn’t consider this as his way of thinking little of the situation.
In fact he was worried about what was going to happen. Who would come after him and what would they bring? He just figured that in this situation it would be best to try to act as if it wasn’t a big deal to him. As he sat down onto the couch he looked over at the blonde, wondering what exactly his plan was. “I see it did not take you long to find me, I figured that the rest of our compatriots would have already been here, but if it’s only you then I gotta assume I’m not that much of an issue for them at the moment.”
After all he was only a seated member of the fifth division. It wasn’t like he was some captain on the run or a notorious fugitive. No he was just Arashi. A regular subordinate that no one truly knew that well. “I have a towel over there in the closet next to the kitchen counter if you need it, and I also have some water if you want.” He would remain cordial with his captain since there didn’t seem to be any animosity. He was taught to treat his guests with respect after all.
As Arashi would finally step out of the way, Shinji would walk into the house at a calm pace. As soon as he was inside, consumed in gray shadows and an inconceivable amount of dust, he would quickly realize the place was in far worse condition even than he’d expected. But what could be said, the place was likely abandoned since Arashi had become a Shinigami, several years ago… it was fair, then. But Shinji wasn’t here to examine Arashi’s post-supposed-betrayal living conditions; he was here to dig for truth. He found himself leaning on a wall rather than finding a seat in this dingy place, and watched Arashi closely as he spoke.
“Good to hear,” he responded to the comment on still wanting to call him Captain, though he wasn’t sure how to take it considering the information he’d been given by others. “However, I’m not sure it would be right for you to call me that anymore. Though, you’re correct; quite possibly the reason I’m the only one here right now is because you are considered rather low on their priorities at the moment. Bigger fish to fry, it seems… I’m sure you know all about that, though.” He grinned as he looked at his subordinate. “But my thoughts are different from theirs, though I’m not inclined to reveal them just yet. Nobody knows that I’ve come here, except maybe those who watch over the Senkaimon… which, given the state of things, no thanks to you, is unfortunately likely. They know, however, that I take strolls in this world from time to time, and I don’t think it’ll be an issue.”
He let out a long sigh, and then decided he would get to the main point of the issue.
“Now, I’ve been told some damning things about you, but I know my subordinates, and I’m inclined to believe there’s more to this than meets the eye.” His grin turned into a mild grimace as he looked to his subordinate… or maybe soon former subordinate… for reactions. “So, what’s your side to the story? Cause all I’ve heard is that you turned your back on people who should’ve been your allies to assist some guys that were terrorizing the public for no conceivable reason.” He paused for a moment, but continued. “And let’s not pretend that you didn’t have something to do with the head honcho getting into the Seireitei to deliver us that message of hers.”
He pushed off of the wall, stretching his arms out wide.
“If you’ve got somethin’ ta say for yourself, now’s the time to say it.”

[attr="class","arilyrics"]Welcome to the end of eras
[attr="class","aritext"]Arashi just sat there listening to his captain. It was true that given the current circumstances it was easy to label him as a traitor. Especially after everything he had done from trying to knock out Bloduwen to helping the enemy deliver a message. He stared at the man for a moment as he contemplated what to say next. He wasn’t sure where to begin or if it would even amount to much. His word wasn’t always able to get him out of these situations and if Hirako chose to he could just decide to execute him in his own home.
“It’s not like I have much to say about myself. In fact it’s probably easiest for everyone to just call me a traitorous scum. I mean I did act like one after all, so I know as far as everyone else is concerned that’s just what I am, scum.” He didn’t have any malice hidden in his tone. In fact he was speaking as nonchalantly as he possibly could because in his mind it was the truth. “All I have to say for myself is that I did what I figured would be best.” He looked back out into the city as the pitter patter of the rain filled the void of silence.
“You see a long time ago I fought against that particular monkey that I’m sure has been reported. He’s not a normal individual in fact he’s probably one of the strongest vasto class hollow’s I’ve ever fought before. And it seems like he’s gotten even stronger since last time. Not to mention he had an ally with him there. It wasn’t like I didn’t try to fight them head on at first, hell I even showed more than I would have liked of my own strength, and I know that Blod tried her best too.”
There was a moment where he paused to soak in that memory. He couldn’t help the frown that was creeping up on his face as he thought about it. It was the worst possible situation for him to have been in because he didn’t have the strength to help her. “So I figured we weren’t strong enough to beat them head on. It was evident after they decided to make a crater out of the city. I figured that maybe if I could somehow convince them that I was leaving to join them it would maybe put a halt to the carnage. So I did the most stupid thing I could, I attacked Blod, and convinced them I would be their ally.”
Arashi looked back at his captain now with a stern look on his face. “I even helped their leader get into the Seireitei to deliver her message as an act of trust. All it was meant to be was for us to deliver a message to everyone there. That’s my side of the story. If you want the truth that’s it, I did it because I thought it could at least put a halt to the carnage temporarily and I could get inside. I wanted to know more about the group and about what they truly wanted. And I wanted to see what I could do from working with them to maybe stop them from mass murdering everyone.”
A sigh escaped. “I know what I did was dumb and it has practically signed my death warrant. I made my decision though in hopes that it could help the situation. I might not be the strongest in a head to head confrontation but I figured I could do something else…” His voice trailed off as he looked down. He still didn’t know what he hoped to accomplish but there was something there that continued pushing him forward.
Shinji listened to Arashi’s side of the story intently, keeping his mind open as he always did. Nothing of his demeanor suggested he was lying in the slightest, and the story rung out about how he actually had expected it to. He couldn’t help a slight grin crossing his face. He was glad he’d come here as soon as that interesting little meeting had concluded; any longer and he might not have been the first here, and anybody else wouldn’t have given his side of the story the light of day. Shinji thumbed the end of his Zanpakuto’s hilt, fidgeting as he thought about how to handle the situation. Surely the old man would accept nothing less than Arashi being dead… and that was exactly what he would report, of course. He had gone off on his own and tracked down his traitorous squad member, putting him down like the dog he was himself.
That was what the report would say, yeah.
“Changing tactics in the face of certain defeat isn’t ‘dumb’, by any means, Arashi,” Shinji began, “and it’s certainly smarter than most anything any of the guys upstairs would do, anyway.” He thought for another moment, letting out a long sigh. “I believe ya. Can’t say anyone else will, but I believe ya. And that puts us in a rather… difficult position. I can’t take you back alive, or they’ll kill ya. I’m not gonna kill ya myself, cause you haven’t done anything wrong, or at least not for the wrong reasons.” He took a few steps for his… former subordinate, he supposed he would have to be called for now. But even so, his work for Arashi wasn’t done.
“But even so, your actions have created a rather… fortunate situation, they have. This woman… Athena, she calls herself… seems to want war with the Gotei 13. And now, it would seem she believes you an ally. And that’s a good thing.” He took a few steps towards the Shinigami. “You want to work to prevent them from causing more harm as much as possible, yeah?”

[attr="class","aritext"]There was a slight relief that came from his former captain’s response. At least he wasn’t there to kill him or even bring him in. This was a start. Of course if it was anyone else they would have already tried to kill him. He appreciated that Hirako could be at least more open than the others. The fact that they were still speaking peacefully was a statement as to how reasonable he could be. However he still had to remember that the others would come after him with malice and would intend on taking his life. His chest tightened as he thought of fighting against any of his former comrades.
He listened to Hirako a bit more taking in the full scope of what he was saying. Of course he wanted to keep them from creating more harm. He wanted to make sure that no one innocent really had to die in this situation. That’s why he joined them in the first place, to keep them from utterly destroying the town he grew up in, and potentially protecting people he cared about. “Yes, I do want to prevent more destruction and death. What’s your plan though? We see where I wound up with my plan and I know you’re a lot smarter than I am.”
The kid was still selling himself short, but he supposed that just came from inexperience. Arashi had only been a Shinigami for a few years, after all, where Shinji had decades upon decades of experience. Obviously he would assume Shinji would have better plans, even if he himself had started one that Shinji would only have vaguely thought of as a possibility. Though, doing something like this through an official plan would have been a lot harder. It was incredibly convenient that Arashi had set up a situation to have a spy among new enemies without even having orders to do so… orders that would have been questionable to give, at best.
But now was the time for solid planning.
“Well, to start, you’ve set up a very fortunate situation. You will act as a double-agent, a spy in their ranks; how lucky of us to have such so early on. You will be unofficially so, obviously, as the rest of the Gotei 13 likely wants you dead. I likely won’t be able to send or receive messages from you very often, otherwise they’ll catch on… so, we’ll have to relay messages through the world of the living.” He thought for a moment. “Do they know about this place? Your new ‘friends’, I mean.”

[attr="class","aritext"]So that was his plan, they would have Arashi act as a double agent, and work from the inside. He was very fortunate to be having these situations unfold the way they were. He of course was still wary of doing anything just yet but he had confidence that this could be followed if he wanted. He stared at Hirako as he continued to speak about how they would meet infrequently in the human world. This was the only way really. He’d be massacred if he tried to visit the Gobantai barracks, let alone step foot into the Seireitei.
“No they don’t know about this place. Only a handful of individuals actually know about it. I’ve made sure to only meet them in their areas of comfort. So quite honestly this would be the best spot to convene, at least until the rest of Soul Society decide they want to come knocking me door down.” He smiled a little at the last part. Once they decided he was the fish they wanted to fry they would be coming there; he was certain of that. “So, for now I will continue to do what I need to, and we’ll meet whenever you think would be best. By the way, why did you come find me first? I know that you have a past and it’s made you fairly open minded; especially compared to the others. But it’s not like I’m that important, so why go through the time to come find me to hear my side?”
“Good.” If this ‘Olympus’ didn’t know of this place, that meant it was a good place for Arashi to drop messages for the Captain. “Communicating often directly is risky; rather, I would suggest our course of action be that, periodically, you come here and drop a written report of anything you think is noteworthy. You can choose anywhere in the place, it doesn’t matter much to me. Any information we can get from the inside will be vital, I’m sure. I slip out to this world often enough, nobody will notice when I come to check for updates or, if necessary, leave a message for you instead.” That would be the plan. It was rather one-sided, but in times like these, even as sure as Shinji was that Arashi was on their side, nobody could be too sure. Information going out could be intercepted by these Olympians; thus, information going out would be little and far-between. “I’d recommend giving it at least two or three weeks before dropping the first message. The Gotei should be here before long, and they might stake the place out for a while.”
He stopped for a moment, thinking about Arashi’s next question.
“It’s simple, really. You’re a member of the Gobantai, and I know my people. We may not have met often, but I’m particularly good at reading people, and I’m not so laid-back about responding appropriately since…” He froze up for a moment, then continued. “…since Aizen’s betrayal. The instant I heard you were involved in this mess, I figured there was more to it than just that. And knowing the old man, if I had waited too long, they would send someone else, and it would be impossible to reach you myself without having to throw away my plan entirely.” He let his normal, toothy grin show. “Anyway, I’m gonna have to report you as dead, so I’d recommend staying out of the Gotei’s sights if at all possible. And, of course, don’t let those new ‘friends’ of yours catch onto any of this either. But that goes without saying, anyway.”

[attr="class","aritext"]So that was his reasoning behind it. “Yeah, I can stay out of their sights for the most part. I’ll leave a report in a few weeks in the cabinet above the stove. In the meantime good luck with everything. If I could help fake my death I would but I feel like that might be a bit difficult.” He grinned a little bit at the thought of going above and beyond with the plan. He had watched enough television as a human to know faking your death never really worked. All he could do is rely on Hirako’s report being trusted.
He’d just be a phantom now acting out when he was out of the sights of the Gotei. It wasn’t going to be easy, nor would it be that practical. Arashi looked at the streets that were less crowded as the storm worsened. “Ya’ know storms like this really calm the soul.” He felt calmer as the storm was raging on in the background of their conversation. “Anyways, I’ll stay out of trouble, and I’ll probably find a new place to hide at for now. Maybe some of my new friends will be welcoming.”
