Low mist hung over a dim evening in Karakura town. All over the sprawling Tokyo outskirt, its residents retired the evening. Lights flicked out in windows and the city streets grew quiet, still, and empty. All manner of critter, rat, raccoon, and undead began to stir. In this city where the Reishi hangs thick like a cloak, the dead are drawn. Pluses unable to pass to the afterlife of their own accord, are too drawn here by natural necessity they yet scarcely understand. Alone, defenseless, the lingering are simple prey for the furious dead that haunt the darkest folds of the spiritual world. For every ten thousand souls, there is one sword to protect them. Mihri Ikeda stood at the top of a long staircase, overlooking a large field. Sparse trees and empty buildings dotted the clearing beneath her. Beyond the field sprawled a dark wood of dancing trees. Behind her, the city-scape murmured with ever dwindling activity. Her ears drank every sound. She heard the distant roar of car tires, the barking of a dog. Nearby two lovers greeted in secret. Along a fence, a black cat padded along in near silence. The loudest sounds of all, were the sounds of struggle, the rasped breathing of her prisoner and his panicked heartbeat. He was tied to a post behind Mihri, making every vain attempt to escape. “Thissus’ cruelty! Cut me loose, dammit woman!” He protested, but Mihri payed him no attention. He was a known murderer her father sentenced to death. He showed no such respite to his victims. He was only bait for a particularly slippery hollow. As her prisoner continued to struggle against a crackling yellow bind, Mihri’s ears followed new sounds. Breathing, heavy, the stamp of sprinting feet on grass. There was not a whisper of Reiatsu, but she could still hear the panting clearly as the source came to a halt. Mihri’s right ear twitched, and she turned her pale blue gaze to her right. Glowing yellow eyes peered from behind a building in the field. The field was unlit, the moon hung high behind thick clouds. The creature would usually be invisible in the dark, but to Mihri’s eyes it was standing there, clear as day and looking rather foolish. It did not seem know Mihri had detected it. She could see only the white of its mask, a few strands of hair and its glowing eyes. A hollow, obviously, and a cautious one. She walked to her prisoner, who still struggled against his binds. Mihri released him and took a firm grip of his arm. She threw him to the ground and gave him a stern kick on his romp, to get him moving. He hadn’t really needed convincing, he started down the stairs with such pace he tripped and fell part of the way down. Mihri heard bounding feet again, heard her bait scream, and knew he had met the gaze of his fate. Screams of fear became screams of agony that quickly faded to the sounds of crunching bone and slurped entrails. With a flash-step Mihri descended the stairs. The hollow heard her descend. It turned and lunged, claws forward. Mihri spun to the side and gave the hollow a hard punch to the ribs. It touched ground and turned on its heels, swinging a savage claw at Mihri’s head. She parried the blow and jumped back a meter. Mihri could see its whole body now. It walked on hands with razor-like claws, hunched over like an ape. Its mask was a streak of unmarked white bone with several protruding fangs and long black hair. The hollow seized the initiative. It lunged and swung a slow, mid-height attack that Mihri quickly countered with a strong strike to its jaw and a side-step. Gaining its composure, the hollow made the same kind of strike again, and a third time, this time faster and from different directions. Mihri dodged the second strike, and parried the third as she delivered a harsh kick to the monster’s abdomen. The hollow lurched back, and Mihri flash stepped to its side, grabbed its mask, and slammed its head into the pavement. Mihri flash stepped away five meters. The hollow sprung upright, and growled an angry roar at Mihri. The hollow began to circle her slowly, studying its opponent. This was her target, Mihri surmised. It matched the reports. An ape-like hollow with a fanged mask and claws. It is intelligent, an opportunist hunter. According to reports, this hollow will run away first chance. Extra Kan for this one thought Mihri. She needed to act quickly. With a swift pull, Mihri drew Mōkin. She held her arms out straight, holding the longsword pointed at ground in a fool’s guard. The hollow took yet another slice of bait and lunged, bearing claws forward. Mihri rotated her longsword so the tip came to her shoulder then dropped the tip behind herself in one smooth motion. Mihri sidestepped wide and swung her sword in an upward arc. Steel met the creature’s flesh at its elbow, severing the arm cleanly. The hollow screamed and fell to the ground in a heap. It scrambled to its feet, slipping at first, but got its footing and legged it. The creature bounded away- however it could in its state- leaving a thick trail of blood behind it. Mōkin flashed and flew from Mihri’s hand. The sword took only seconds to catch the hollow and run its point straight through the beast’s brain. The hollow’s body quickly faded away, its Reishi scattering into the winds of the cool evening. Mōkin returned to Mihri’s hand. The shinigami pulled a small cloth from her pocket, and began to wipe the blood from her sword.
Toshi had been slurping down noodles in the train station after a fairly boring day of analyzing samples. He was listening to Janko Nilovic, his mind completely blank. The life of a graduate student was a hard one and it was something that Toshi had not truly prepared himself for. He was effectively sat in a vegetative state now, not really prepared to face the requirements of going home and cleaning and doing laundry but also without the proper mental function to do any more work. Physically though he was fine. His body was lean and fit as ever. He regretted sometimes not just taking some physical labour job, but then again, archaeology was his dream. He guessed it was just a dream that took a lot of grit and toil.
"Toshi!" his Guardian spirit, Kanaboshi alerted him to danger.
It was then that he felt it. The unmistakable reiatsu of a hollow. His eyes widened, and his body seemed almost to react of its own accord. He scooped the rest of his noodles into his mouth, threw a whole bunch of change down, probably too much, and high-tailed out outta there. He dashed along the streets, regretting the fact that this could get messy, and he was wearing a white shirt. He found a fire escape ladder, and tugged himself upwards with seemingly superhuman strength, leaping over onto the roof of the building. The hollow reiatsu was closer but now... There was also a shinigami. Did he continue? Would he just get in the way? He decided to approach, to see if the shinigami needed any backup.
What he saw disturbed him immensely. The shinigami appeared to be using a soul as bait. The poor guy ran away when she kicked him and Toshi shouted out, trying to warn him of the danger, but to absolutely no avail.
"Wait!!" he called, running towards them. He saw the man get chomped by the hollow and he had to avoid the urge to be sick as he saw his body folded up between the hollow's jaws, his innards spilling out everywhere. He stopped, horrified at what he had witnessed. At this juncture, the shinigami proceeded to take advantage of the hollow's distraction, cutting its arm and promptly killing it, seemingly barely breaking a sweat.
With a cold nonchalance to the violence she had just been a part of, she began to wipe her sword clean. At that point, Toshi ran up to her, stopping several meters short, a look of disgust and anguish upon his face.
"What the hell's the big idea? I thought you shinigami were supposed to protect souls, not use them as fodder for taking out hollows! How is that any different to just letting the hollow ravage the world all on its own!?" he asked in an accusatory tone.
Mihri sheathed her sword, content in its cleanliness. A sudden mix of confusion and fear caught Mihri as she felt a significant Reiatsu approach her, accompanied by a somewhat agitated breath and heartbeat. The Reiatsu she felt was strange of taste, and definitely powerful. A human. She turned and fixed her pale blue gaze on him. It looked to be just some lad, maybe in his early 20’s, Mihri surmised. His hair was blonde and spiked, he was tall and wore black clothing. Mihri took a hesitant step back as he spoke, questioning her actions and their perhaps contradictory purpose. Mihri was inclined to disagree with his assertion. “Protect souls? No. Not exactly.” Mihri said flatly. “Our duty is to maintain the balance of death and reincarnation. Which often means defending souls and guiding them on. It also means slaughtering thousands, when the scale tips dangerously in one direction." “Moreover,” She continued, briefly pointing to the scraps of soiled clothing in the field, all that remained of the consumed soul. “His crimes: four counts of rape and a dozen murders, and banditry. Sentenced to hang by the neck until dead. Before I made a requisition, that is. But don't worry about him, he is reincarnated now.” Mihri explained, in a tone as remorseless as her actions. Mihri was intimidated by the other’s reiatsu, and felt the need to defend herself against his accusation and show the utmost courtesy. However she showed nothing outwardly, not a hint of fear or guilt. Mihri had become far too skilled at stowing her every emotion behind an expression solid as stone. This would not be the first time Mihri has used a Plus as bait, and it would not be the last. She always looked for the worst capital offenders on the rare occasions she needed them. Mihri knew very well the fate she consigned them to was a gruesome one. Mihri only ever chose bait that had orchestrated similarly gruesome actions. Besides, her own father sentenced him to death. He was due for the gallows anyway. “My name is Mihri.” She said politely with a slight bow of her head. “May I have the honour of knowing your name?”
Was she some kind of sociopath or something? Toshi was freaking out right there. He was just a simple guy, as far as he knew he was the ultimate small fry of the spiritual world. Bottom of the ladder. Back of the line, or whatever. But as far as he knew the duty of shinigami was to protect souls from the attacks of hollows. And yet here was this shinigami calmly stating that sometimes she killed thousands of people to maintain some "balance"!? Toshi may have been groggy from studying but that was certainly news to him. So while shinigami usually stuck to killing hollows, at any moment that it became useful for them to do so, they would just kill regular people like him too!? Jeez, what a life. He didn't really know what to make of that information.
And then she listed off this guy's crimes. He frowned. This on its own was a complex ethical debate. Toshi was broadly anti-capital punishment after the edgy days of his teenage years. Japan's judicial system was too fucked up for it ever to be moral to do such a thing. He guessed then that the shinigami, arbiters of the world, were no better than the squares at the Ministry of Justice. And while the method of death might have seemed barbaric, Toshi knew that the same occurred in Japan. Was being eaten by a hollow really that much worse than hanging?
Yes! Of course. She caught him off guard with her polite question, however and he frowned.
"I'm Toshi Dunson..." he told her uncertainly. He wouldn't tell her it had been a pleasure to meet her, because so far, it hadn't been. "All the same that wasn't particularly humane. There's normal bait too, those guys with the bow and arrows use it." he said referring to that girl who he'd met years ago now who'd had some hollow bait. His initial anger had abated now, and was replaced by uncertainty and sorrow. His spiritual pressure faded away, and he would appear once more to be just like a regular human with no powers at all.
Mihri could hear the human’s breathing and heartrate slowly return to a normal pace as Mihri explained herself. Her logic seemed to have worked, he even pulled back his reiatsu. He had formidable powers and seemed to know how to control them. Someone had to have taught him. Was he a Quincy? No, Mihri could easily tell a Quincy apart from a Human. Mihri wanted to know more. All the same, it was best for her to be cautious. Entertain his questions for now, walk on eggshells. ‘Toshi Dunson’ was his name. Now we’re getting somewhere. Mihri was again inclined to disagree. She knew rather well the bait he was referring to. The Quincy used the bait to great effect during the war. Quincy would locate a shinigami camp and send an infiltrator during the night who breaks a disk there. Suddenly the whole camp is awoken and fighting hollows in their undergarments. Perfect time for an ambush. Shinigami could likely develop similar bait. However, as proven time and again said bait is dangerous. Especially when hunting a single hollow, drawing dozens would be a problem. When hunting a single mouse, one uses a single piece of cheese. One does not advertise to the neighborhood mice that you have cheese, and hope the resulting swarm contains the mouse you saw in the kitchen. “Bait like that is dangerous. Draws too many hollows, makes them aggressive. That would likely get me, and a lot of other people killed.” Mihri said with a twist of her mouth. “Gruesome and inhumane methods my methods are indeed. However, ultimately safer. For me and the town.”
"Bah." He responded. She was just making excuses at this point. Toshi would never be able to get behind such an inhumaine method of execution. Those guys had cellphones that you could use to call the afterlife for chrissakes! Making a little tab of bait for hollows seemed like child's play in comparison to that. Heck their swords could literally exorcise dead souls. But he daren't cross any of them. Shinigami powers were strange and terrifying. He had seen one of them release their zanpakuto once... A Shikai. Such a thing dwarfed Toshi in strength and power. He was powerless to do anything. He could fight the established order all he liked but at the end of the day, the way things were, the way things were.
"So then I take it you're the new shinigami on patrol for Karakura, right? Whatever happened to that guy with the afro? And what about that redheaded guy. I see him sometimes and Gee, that's guy's a monster, his reiatsu is all over the damn place, ya feel me?" he asked, coolly. Afro-san had been pretty chill, as far as death gods went. Maybe Toshi just thought that 'cause of the boss-ass Afro but eh, all the same. This woman... She screamed "shinigami" all over. Every aspect of her being said "shinigami". Militant, uncaring, weird, and utterly devoted to the job. He didn't know much about their military structure, only that they had one and that the people over in batallion 11 or whatever were blood knights. This woman wasn't one of those. Whoever her boss was, he was a guy that demanded martial respect and... Mihri? She oozed it.
It put Toshi slightly on edge, and he could feel Kanaboshi and Kasei, his two little guardian sprites, tense up inside his soul. He had to suppress a shudder at her grim smile. The two hated women, particularly attractive women, and they bristled at not being able to protect him from any threats. Toshi was quite adverse to organization and discipline, preferring a more ad-hoc approach. Mihri's obvious, overflowing power got his attention and respect but his trust was slightly harder to earn.
Mihri knew she could not breach the moral fastness held by the human. The two were a clash of cultures, worlds apart in a literal sense. Shinigami have a strict culture of regulation, tradition, and military law. For a young human of the 21st century, liberal and freethinking, it was only natural that shinigami culture seem alien. Not only an aristocrat, Mihri was a member of Squad Six. Hers is a squad principle and law enforcement. Captain Kuchiki leads a tight ship, and expects his officers to set an example. For good or for ill. A shinigami obeys, a shinigami keeps the balance at all costs. Sometimes to do so one had to take extreme measures. In the far north of the Rukon, there was never a lack of need for extreme measures. You obeyed the law or paid with blood. Even the nobles need to fight for survival in a place where the rule of law could only furtively touch those outside the cities. So if you could not reach them, they needed to fear you. Ruthless strength was the only thing keeping the far off provinces from total anarchy. If Mihri is to rule when her father passes, then she can not flinch at the sight of blood nor hesitate to implement the law. To do so was a duty she bore to her Squad and her house. Toshi seemed eager to change the subject with a question regarding her patrols and other shinigami in the area. She knew of the afro’d fellow, though she could not place his name. Kumoyama? Kuromada? She could not remember, she knew him only by his mocking nickname, ‘Afro-san.’ “For now, yes. The patrols rotate between the Squads. Afro-san may return here in a fortnight or so when I get bumped.” She explained, listening as Toshi continued. The redhead he spoke of could only be Ichigo Kurosaki, a human who had become quite the polarizing figure in the Soul Society these last few years. “Oh yes, he’s around here too. You have to look for it, but you can sense him sometimes. Quite a monstrous presence, that one...” Her musing was cut short by a disruptive beep that broke the evening's stillness like a hammer. Mihri pulled the soul communicator from her pocket and examined the screen. Another hollow appeared less than two kilometers away. Duty had literally called. Oddly so soon after the last kill, perhaps this new contender wished to pick up wounded scraps. One thing could be said about a Karakura posting, rarely was it boring. Mihri stowed the device in her pocket. She could feel its reiatsu now, a mid-level hollow, approaching cautiously. “The void has coughed up another beast.” Said Mihri as her reiatsu flickered in her eyes. “Want to come along? An extra set of capable hands would not go amiss.”
Hmm, so they rotated their patrols. That made sense. That meant that they probably got to travel all over the world... And just a couple weeks at a time too. He was jealous! Toshi was a fairly seasoned traveller by now, mostly just because he had to fly out to digs and ruins and other places like that. He guessed shinigami could just appear and disappear as they pleased, however it was that they did that. They were like some strange supernatural force, where each answer turned up ten more questions. He had to be careful not to ask too much, else otherwise his head would start to hurt even more.
Toshi was about to ask for more specifics on that one guy, but then her cellphone beeped. He blinked. Probably not a casual call for just a chat. Ahh damn, she was about to get called away on duty. He felt a strange wrenching in his stomach at that. Ahh yeah; of course he would get a crush now. That was toooootally appropriate.
"Not five minutes ago you thought she was a murderous maniac!" Kanaboshi, his green haired little guardian, complained in his head. Well... She wasn't exactly wrong. But Toshi was kind of fickle. You spent a few minutes talking to him, come across as fairly human and that was that. It didn't hurt that Mihri was pretty, she was somewhat the perfect model of a Japanese girl. Toshi with his bright blonde hair and tanned skin looked a bit like a working-class punk. She was like a damn princess compared to him.
Toshi looked up at the few prickles of light that he could see in the sky as she looked at whatever text message she had got. There weren't too many stars in K-town but he spied one twinkling light that went too fast to be a plane.
"Oh hey look, the ISS!" he said, happily. He'd forgotten that it would be passing overhead a few times that evening. It sure was weird to consider that there were people up there. Then he realized he was stood with a person from the after-life and it robbed the moment of its magic somewhat. He was so wrapped up in his thoughts, he didn't notice her put her phone away, and didn't clock when she started talking. He did feel her reiatsu though.
"Hmm? Oh what, another one? And you want me to go with you? You're not gonna try and use me as bait, right?" he asked doubtfully, while Kasei, his other little guardian, stifled a laugh inside his mind.
There was a concern that constantly weighed at the back of Mihri’s brain as she conversed with the human. She wondered the nature of his powers, and if they were the kind that exercised or destroyed. Mihri wanted to see Toshi exercise a hollow. If his powers worked like a zanpakuto, and exercised the hollow, Mihri would leave him out of her report. But if not… if his powers destroyed the hollow… then Mihri would have no choice. He was a nice lad, and his reiatsu seemed strong. Mihri prayed that he was blessed with a purer power than Quincy. “No.” Mihri replied a flat tone. “That would be murder. I will draw the hollow to us then you’ll bash it in the back of the head when the time is right.” She turned and started back up the steps. Upon reaching the top, she flashed onto the roof of a nearby building. From the roof she could see the beast approaching. The hollow was twice the size of a man, and humanoid in shape, with jet black skin and on its back beat huge wings. The hollow carried itself through the sky with some speed. With another flash step, Mihri was standing on the air a dozen meters above the building. A sudden gale of wind blew as Mihri flexed her spiritual powers. She lit with a pale blue glow, strands of Reiryoku whirled around her. Mihri only flashed her powers for a brief moment, a couple seconds, but it was more than enough for the hollow to take notice. It flapped its wings and picked up its pace, senses fixed on its desired meal. The creature closed the rest of the distance in little time. It hovered on the air before Mihri and roared an earsplitting screech. The hollow lunged forward with a blinding quick sonido, and swung to grab the shinigami that seemed to defy it so. With yet another flash step, Mihri dodged. She wasted no time, and pulled her sword from its sheath. The blade flickered then flew, splitting into two in the air. Avoiding a swipes from the hollow, the bastard swords dove low and impaled the creature’s legs just above the ankle. The creature screamed and clawed at the swords impaled the sword impaling its legs, but with great mental effort, Mihri kept the sword in place. Immobile, the hollow was a sitting duck for a good skull-bashing. Mihri hoped Toshi had not backed down, and called on him to seize the opportunity. “The back of its head is a weak point! A strong punch and he’s finished!”
Well at least he had a vague reassurance that she wasn't just going to sacrifice him for "the greater good" or some other Hot Fuzz shit. He followed her up the steps, his two Hogo-Sha grumbling with concern. He did the mental equivalent of waving them off and Ianto, the somewhat demonic guardian inside Toshi's mind laughed. Toshi tried to ignore it but the demon usually only laughed when he was being an idiot, or providing it with an opportunity to take control of his body. He followed her with his step, a slightly comical "vroom!" noise sounding, similar to a cartoon roadrunner or racecar, as he performed high speed movement. Holy mackerel! That hollow looked kinda scary.
Mihri seemed to be trying to draw it close. Draw it close!? Ahhhhhhh! Why would she do that, that thing was terrifying! It had high speed movement just like them! That was new. It had become Toshi's "ace in the bag". Usually the hollows he fought and other spiritual beings he met couldn't do it. Her spiritual pressure was so strong too, it seemed like she leaked power constantly. Toshi could feel the weight. Not as bad as hollows used to feel to him, however. The hollow seemed to begin attacking her and Toshi was panicked, not knowing what to do. She withdrew her zanpakuto, using them to 'achilles' the hollow, spraying Toshi with hot, red blood. Ahh dammit. These clothes were basically fucked.
But she had it pinned down. She called for him to attack it, and he obliged. He formed a bright, golden-yellow barrier over his right hand, in the shape of a large spike, and used another as a platform to throw him up into the air, high above both the hollow and the shinigami. With a mighty shout, almost like a kiai, he descended. He delivered a mighty punch to the hollow, impaling its face. Once the barrier was nestled inside, the hollow howled at the sudden hole through its face. To ensure victory, Toshi willed the barrier to erupt into spikes at its tip. As a result, several golden spikes burst gorily from the hollow's skull, before they retracted.
Toshi began to fall to the ground. He was a good twenty meters up. This would not be a pleasant fall for him. He dropped, freefalling even as the body of the hollow he had killed dropped from the sky. "Miiiiiiiihriiiiii heeeeeelp!" he called.
Toshi had kept pace, and true to her call, as the hollow stood immobile and struggling, the human responded in kind. He used a strange technique, a barrier that formed on his hands and on the air. He used one barrier, suspended in the air, as a platform to leap up and meet the hollow’s altitude. Another barrier flashed on his hand and as he threw a strike at the hollow on its mask, and impaled its face with the barrier. The beast screamed in pain but was silenced when spikes burst from its skull, seeming to be the same barrier technique. The barrier dripped with blood before receding, leaving the hollow’s upper body a tangled mess of blood and bone. The hollow’s body became limp, quickly fading away. Mihri's swords became one, it flew into the sheath on her back.
Mihri was for sure impressed. For a human to so quickly dispatch a hollow was not typical. She felt his power even more now, he was something else. His energies seemed at least on par with that of a lieutenant. Mihri even felt a bit more scared of him now, but respected him even more than than she feared his strength. Mihri could have even found some affection for him, if he were not a human.
Her feelings of fear turned into a different kind of mortal fear, for him, as the human fell from the sky and yelled for help. Mihri cursed under her breath, pushing off with her right foot and into a flash step. Mihri caught Toshi halfway down his fall, carrying him over her shoulder as they gently descended. Mihri gently touched ground, and she set Toshi back on his feet.
“Nice job, dispatched the beast like an expert. Your abilities of flight, though, leave much to be desired.” She smiled, her voice flicking with playful mockery.
Mihri pulled out her soul communicator, tapped the screen a couple times, and inspected the information it laid out for her. The communicators were capable of reading the flow of souls in the area, so the shinigami on hand could investigate if something were amiss. If something was amiss, such as a hollow being destroyed instead of cleansed, the device would be going haywire. The phone was silent in Mihri’s hand, displaying only a satellite map of the city. Satisfied, she smiled, nodded, and stowed the device in her pocket. Mihri was relieved beyond words that his power was pure, though she did not show it.
“You’re a scary kid, you know that?” Said Mihri, crossing her arms over her chest and giving Toshi an inquisitive look. “Where did a human learn to cast Reiryoku like that? Someone had to have taught you. Who?” She asked.
His heart raced. Oh god this was going to hurt. He whipped through the air at tremendous speed, his mind going blank as he descended, not even able to conjure a barrier to save himself. Luckily, he felt the powerful form of the shinigami take ahold of him. He turned bright red in embarrassment as she gently lowered him, in a fireman's lift type fashion. Oh Gods, he couldn't even ask for her number now. Not after this embarrassment.
"Who are you kidding, as if you ever would have asked for her number anyway?" Kanaboshi accused internally. He sighed. He supposed she was right. Even after coolly showing off and killing a monster in front of a girl, he wouldn't exactly be able to muster up the courage to ask her out. Even less so given that she was an almighty godess of death. Would that... Would that be necrophilia? His spirits recoiled from the grossness, except Ianto, who merely growled and seemed to retreat further into the depths of Toshi's mind.
"I feel ya, buddy." he said in a lighthearted attempt to connect with the demon. No dice. He was ignored. He could now at least focus once again at the task at hand; as the shinigami had now dropped him, he didn't have to worry about accidentally staring at her ass. He almost regretted not taking a peak. He bet it was a good ass. Did shinigami do squats? Or any exercise? So many questions, so few answers.
She made a joke at his expense and smiled; her first genuine smile of the night. He didn't count the grimace from before. He laughed, his face still red, and scratched awkwardly at the back of his head. She was right though. It seemed all the damn hollows and shinigami could fly or something nowadays. Why couldn't he fly!? Oh yeah. That was right. He was just a dumb, mortal human. Doomed to die, as it were. She took out her phone; more callouts? But no, she stowed it away and looked at him. Her was about to ask her what was up, when she started asking questions.
He was... Scary? He wondered what was so frightful about himself to a Shinigami like her. Toshi was just a regular guy after all. It was his powers? He frowned. In all honesty, Toshi didn't really think much about his own powers. He remembered when he had first got them, after his parents had died. He had been so alone and afraid in the world. He had acted out at school, beating the hell out of punks and delinquents to try and protect the kids who were getting picked on. Toshi knew what it felt like to have something against you you were powerless to stop. School bullies weren't exactly on par with hollows but the principle had been the same to him.
And suddenly from the midst of the loneliness, Kanaboshi had appeared. Taking the place of his right hand. For a long time, Toshi had absolutely no idea how to get rid of her. And while he had hated it at first, he soon valued his little companion above all else. And then Kasei had joined her; he remembered the night in Tsubakidai park well, fighting the flaming hollow underneath the moonlight, where she had appeared and used her Death Beam to destroy it. And then Ianto, who had taken over his soul. Toshi had had to defeat him inside his Hobotsusen, the Parabolic world where his spirits resided. He wondered whatever had happened to that weird Shinigami dude who kind of felt like a hollow; Hidane. But as for an answer to her question. Well he supposed...
"That would be me!" Kanaboshi had beaten him to it. He looked alarmingly at his own right arm, where a tiny girl had appeared adjoined to his wrist where his hand had been moments earlier. It was moving wna waving of its own accord as Kanaboshi stretched out so that she was close to Mihri. "I'm Kanaboshi, nice to meet you Mihri!" Kana said with a big smile and extending a tiny hand out to shake. It was about the same size as Mihri's index finger. "I was the one who taught Toshi to fight." she said with a determined look on her face, miming giving the old "one-two".
"N-nani, K- Kanaboshi..." Toshi said, midly annoyed. The little sprite would never show it on the surface; she was all sunny and smiles, but he knew that she was a little bit jealous. The spirits didn't like women- specifically, they didn't like women that Toshi liked. Not if they didn't get to meet them too.

More and more curious. This human was full of most bizarre surprises. The tiny sprite seemed to grow from the boy's wrist in place of his hand. It seemed to only have an upper body, and was no bigger than the hand it had just replaced. The features of a young green haired girl beamed with an endearing smile as it extended a hand and a polite greeting. Mihri was taken visibly aback by the strange spirit and its anatomy, feeling a little awkward when it extended its tiny hand. Her expression was steely as ever, but one might be able to make out slight confusion by the furrowing of her brow. A human having controllable Reiryoku like Toshi was remarkable of its own right, but for said powers to manifest into a spirit that seemed capable of thought was something else entirely. The spirit claims to have taught Toshi how to fight, which suggested something deeper, an understanding and connection to the spiritual. Where did the spirit come from? How were they made? Had his soul broken apart and become sapient, like a Zanpakuto? The answer to Mihri's question had only lead to further questions and greater curiosity.
Mihri tried her best to be polite, "Erm... hello, Kanaboshi." Mihri gave a slight bow. "Quite the curiosity, you two. Tell me, Kanaboshi, what are you exactly? Are you like a Zanpakuto?" If the sprite was the source of Toshi's power that cleansed a hollow, it was in some way connected to the cycle of rebirth. Mihri thought that if the sprite were anything like a Zanpakuto, it would never be straightforward, especially regarding the specifics of the cycle. A subject which Mokin has tightened his beak of many times in discussion with Mihri. Nevertheless, some pointed questions could yield interesting information.
Toshi frowned. Some day, Kanaboshi and Kasei's habit of popping out whenever they felt like at inopportune moments was going to come back and bite him on the ass. Those two just had no idea when to quit, it seemed. While Toshi tried to avoid imagining himself meet a grizzly end at the hands of something or someone that had been somehow startled or offended at the sprites' presence, the two before him made their introductions. Mihri seemed to be about as taken aback as Toshi had expected and he steeled himself. She was pretty but he had also seen her kill a guy. Well that guy had been a murderer, but he still had very little idea of what to actually expect from her. What if Kanaboshi had upset whatever "balance" she had been telling him about before? Still, for some reason Kanaboshi herself was under the impression that it would be fine, so he just decided to follow suit. She may have just been a kid but she was right, he had learned about his powers from her and so he had to trust her instinct.
Kanaboshi's face fell into a horrified frown as the shinigami had neglected to shake her hand. The top half of her face turned blue from embarrassment and her eyes were two large white 'O's with comically poorly drawn edges. She flailed about for several moments, as Mihri asked her if she was like a zanpakuto. Toshi grew frustrated, a vein popping in his temple.
"Will ya cut that out ya damn fool!? The lady asked you a question!" Toshi whisper-yelled at his right hand, pulling her off to the side so that he wasn't shouting straight in Mihri's face.
"Uwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa don't shout at meeee!" she replied, also shouting, but somehow in hushed tones.
"Well I'm gonna shout if ya don't stop goofin' around I swear ter god..." And thus the bickering began. Amidst all the commotion, Toshi had not even noticed Kasei, his other "Hand-sprite" manifesting on his left hand. His left arm raised up so that Kasei was face-to-face with Mihri so she didn't have to crane her neck while looking down. Kasei's sister was cute but she could be a bit of a ditz sometimes, and didn't necessarily make things easy for people. Kind of like Toshi...
She brushed her blue school-dress down and neatened the ponytail that rested perkily atop her head and stared at the shinigami with wide brown eyes, her pretty lips pursed sideways in a slightly contemplative fashion. What was Mihri's end-game here, except maybe curiosity? "...-ys keep me in your head with that big bullying red thi-..." the bickering continued quietly in the background as Kasei bowed deeply to Mihri. Her manners were nothing short of exemplary if nothing else.
"Mi-Mihri-sama. I am Kasei-desu. The Zanpakuto is the Shinigami's "Soul-Cutter's Sword" if I am not mistaken, ne? Well Kanaboshi and I- that is to say, we are not exactly like a Zanpakuto. For one, neither of us are weapons. We each have our own mind, our own soul and..." she looked wistfully at Toshi, "... our own heart." Toshi was still arguing with Kanaboshi, the two of them like schoolchildren, completely oblivious to the Hogo-Sha before Mihri. "A shinigami has a Zanpakuto to kill hollows but... We are here because Toshi used to be very lonely." she said, her face glowing red. Kasei got easily embarrassed.

The confused furrow of her brow deepened as the spirit seemed to lose its temper, flailing and yelling like a rejected child in Mihri's face. Mihri scowled at the little... hand puppet girl... refusing to allow herself to be visibly bothered by its outbursts. Toshi pulled it away, and the amiable pair then descended into bickering in hushed tones that nonetheless conveyed their frustration. Mihri found them oddly adorable, forcing herself to stifle a bit of laughter. Mihri was right, the spirit was just like a Zanpakuto. The spirit is just as often insufferable, at least. The display between Toshi and Kanaboshi keenly reminded Mihri of similar rows with Mokin. Heaven forbid Mihri ever neglect a visit, or ever accidentally dirtied his feathers. But of course, being an Owl, Mokin made the most noise at night, so Mihri did a fair bit of the instigating. Mihri and Mokin argued like an old married couple, neither one ever openly admitting to the other the degree in which they were co-dependent. Mihri thought she might sense a similar bond here.
"Glad to meet you Kasei." Mihri regarded the other sprite by returning her bow, not in the least surprised there was another one. Of course there was. The second one wore a blue dress, had brown hair tied neatly in a ponytail, and big brown eyes. She seemed civil as she introduced herself, though anxious in her manner. She seemed to know a little, less than Mihri would have liked. Mihri politely listened as the spirit explained her point, and Mihri could only conclude that the spirits were alike to Zanpakuto in as many ways as not. "A Zanpakuto is more than just a weapon. My Zanpakuto is quite literally a part of me, but still has feelings, opinions and wants, a personality all his own. " A smile tugged at her lips, trying to become a fond memory of times with Mokin. Her reminiscence just as easily turned into images of battle and butchery. Her half-smile became something akin to a wince. She continued, sounding somewhat more wistful than before, "A Zanpakuto can be used for far more than killing hollows. Some Zanpakuto don't even do that. Some heal injuries, some are shields, or... some make cheese... maybe... But indeed, you're right, a Zanpakuto's created purpose is to kill hollows, or aid in the killing of hollows. But they are persons and one should not forget that." Mihri shrugged and smiled. "I wonder how you interact with souls, like with Toshi's soul or stray plus. Forgive me, my entire career is dedicated to studying the many facets of the spiritual realm. I find you fascinating."
Toshi didn't notice Mihri stifling her laughter; nor did Kanaboshi notice the shinigami's scowl. The two were too embroiled in their self-involved and purely inconsequential conflict for that. Mihri was right though, the two of them were kind of similar to an old married couple but with the zeal and energy of youth. While those two were dealing with one another, Kasei spoke to Mihri. Anything she learned she could just tell Toshi later... How wonderful it would be for Kasei to get to teach him, she thought, the very image making her cheeks tinge slightly pink. The shinigami very politely listened to her. Kasei felt a little uneasy with this one. The Gods Of Death could have such Blue and Orange morality. Toshi seemed unperturbed but the idea of a "Balance" of something disturbed her. Did that mean they were part of that balance too? How did it affect things?
Kasei listened with a concerned frown as Mihri spoke of the Soul Cutter's Swords. So, the shinigami swords... they had souls of their own, just like Kasei, Kanaboshi and Ianto? Kasei pondered very seriously what Mihri was saying, but she had lost her at the notion that a Zanpakuto could make cheese. Such a strange thing was guaranteed to distract even Toshi and Kanaboshi who both turned to look at Mihri, their faces somewhat similar to an emoticon such as; ('3').
Toshi looked up at Mihri, having caught the tail end of her conversation. The soul reapers' swords were people? What a strange thing. No more strange than his hands turning into highschool girls though, he supposed. He wondered what would happen when he got old. He'd not really paid attention to whether or not they had aged with him, they both had a kind of ageless quality about them.
Kasei blushed deeply when Mihri told her she found them fascinating. It was exactly the type of thing that would make the shy girl withdraw into herself and not be able to respond. Toshi noticed and experienced a rare moment of sensitivity.
"Hey Kasei, it's ok. That's a good thing." he told her before facing Mihri. This had been a lot to absorb in one sitting and his bloodsoaked shirt was starting to get hard and cold in the night air. "Shinigami-san, I..." he faltered for a moment. Kasei drew close to him and hugged his face. She was a little cold. "Does this mean that you are just like me?" he asked. It was a question that was close to Toshi's heart, as a person who had always felt lonely because he never really found anyone like him. One thing did scare him though. Kasei and Kanaboshi fought with him side by side, they were there, plain to see. It wasn't that he couldn't fight without them, years of scrapping in school was testimony of that, but they were the true source of his power. And yet he had never seen a shinigami fight with such a person beside them before. Did that mean... That he had only ever seen a fraction of shinigami power!? The thought boggled his mind.

Mihri thought she had offended the spirit when at first it seem to withdraw. She was almost ready to apologize, but the spirit's reaction seemed to change as Toshi broke off from his bickering with Kanaboshi and re-assured Kasei. Kanaboshi became silent, for once. Kasei hugged Toshi's face in a way that almost made Mihri squeal from the cuteness, but she held it back and simply smiled. Toshi stammered, catching Mihri off guard with his question. She could tell it was a personal question. Mihri could see on his face the meaning it held and heard the flutter of his heart as he asked it.
In the Soul Society his powers would not be outside of the norm in the least. He had his powers seemingly readily available, called upon, and he could manifest what were seemingly sapient beings into the physical world. Mihri knew of Zanpakuto that could summon their spirit forms for fighting as a combat technique, and how Shinigami near Bankai can summon their spirits physically. Toshi would be rather unremarkable if he were a Shinigami. But here in the Human world, he would have to constantly take care to not get eaten by hollow, or discovered and ostracized. At times, his powers must be a trial on his heart.
"I guess you could.... I suppose you could say that. Indeed, any Shinigami that has unlocked their Zanpakuto's release is like you. My Zanpakuto and I sometimes converse inside my mind. And I can meet my Zanpakuto by using a form of meditation. Some Shinigami can even bring their spirits into the physical world... kind of like you. It's rare, I can't do it, but Captains and some higher officers can do it." Explained Mihri, perhaps too eagerly. She did not know how much she should tell him, but she felt Toshi was trustworthy enough. What harm could teaching him some unclassified lore do?
"They even have their own physical forms too, beside being swords. Inside my soul, there is... erm... a kind of... a pocket dimension where my spirit lives. In that inner world my spirit takes the form of a massive antlered owl." Mihri continued, straight faced and seemingly uncaring as to how absurd those last few sentences might have sounded to a Human. "My Zanpakuto is named Mōkin, he is the bird of prey." Mihri pointed to the hilt of the bastard sword the poked up over her right shoulder, "You've already seen some of his power. He has more power I haven't shown you, some that you can not even see, and some I have not yet unlocked. I wish I could introduce you to him."
Toshi and Kasei were oblivious to the shinigami's amusement but Kanboshi caught her smile. She bit her tiny lip. Was she smiling at Toshi? Or at Kasei? Or both of them? What did that mean? Questions filled her little head and she looked down sadly. Toshi seemed to have forgotten that this woman had done such a terrible thing. But she had been keeping the world safe in doing it... Kanaboshi was wont to loathe her because Toshi found her pretty. The more time Toshi spent chasing pretty girls the less time she would have for the Hogo-Sha. She seemed nice though. Maybe Toshi could make friends with more shinigami and they would have more people to hang out with. But could a shinigami ever truly understand Toshi like they did? Kanaboshi's head whirred.
"Give it a rest, stupid little girl." The voice of Ianto sounded only to Kanaboshi, inside her head. They had a somewhat uneasy truce with him. Despite him always being angry and kind of bad, since Toshi had beaten him in a battle a couple of years ago they had settled into a kind of mutual understanding. It was true that Ianto did not bother the girls any longer.
"Mokusei-ojisan..." she replied, using the name for the demon that the hogo-sha called him by.
Her eyes tightened and she sighed, and just like that, she vanished from Toshi's right hand. He broke his embrace with Kasei to look down at it and frowned. The two tended to come and go as they pleased but sometimes one of them would vanish and it was unnerving. Regardless, he continued to ask his question to Mihri.
What an answer. So Toshi it seemed... Was more like a shinigami, than just a normal human. And she explained how the officers in the shinigami army could even bring the spirits of their sword into the real world. He gasped, he knew what this was! He had met a shinigami long ago... Shio! And he had told Toshi that his sword could change form the name of that ability- was Shikai! Mihri revealed her zanpakuto spirit's name to Toshi as Mōkin. He was about to ask if he could meet him but to no avail; it seemed as though she did not have the power to bring him to the real world. Toshi very strongly avoided the uncomfortable thought that that meant that he might have been on par with a shinigami officer. What that meant he didn't know, and he didn't want to think about so he just disregarded the thought, exploring it no further.
"Yeah, I wish I could meet him too..." he said, trailing off. There was an uncomfortable pause for a couple of seconds. "Oh! But wait! I have this kind of inner world too, see!" he explained excitedly. More and more it seemed as though his powers were matching up to those of shinigami. Except unlike a shinigami, Toshi did not have a "shikai" release. His spirits appearance never changed, and he certainly did not have a sword. But he possessed an inner world- a "Parabolic" world into which he could go. Perhaps... Perhaps he could bring Mihri there too.
"Look, hmm." he said. He closed his eyes, and focused on his breathing for a few seconds. He had learned from a chinese monk once that the key to meditation was to distract the "monkey brain" by giving it a job to do. Toshi found the best job to do was to just let it focus on his breathing. And usually just like that, he could slip into his parabola. But he wanted to show Mihri. He was so excited that he had met someone who understood, who seemed to share his feelings. Instead of merely falling into the coma-like trance, this time Toshi filled the "space" that the Parabola occupied with "energy", or "reiatsu". In doing so, he snapped the parabola off of the parallel that it sat upon. Instead, now, it was a Hyperbola. He opened his eyes, and they were glowing white, with whispy energy.
"Will you come with me?" he asked, grinning. He reached out a hand and took Mihri's, if she didn't pull it away. All thoughts of previous romanticism were gone. Girl or no girl, shinigami or no shinigami, in Toshi's head Mihri now was one thing.
"Friend."

{Read Me}Holy balls sorry this is so long! I know I said I wouldn't be posting much but I've hit a brick wall with regards to working hahahaha
Anyway the tech I'm trying to use here is this;
Name: 双曲線(Sōkyokusen) [Hyperbola] Class: Reiryoku Techniques Tier: VI Type:Supplementary Range: Touch Description: By entering a meditative state, Toshi is able to actually enter this enormous desertous world, covered in sandstone plateaus and vast valleys of wasteland and wheatland below, with rivers snaking through. He is unable to learn any techniques, or improve his masteries, or do any other kind of training while in this state.
Here his Hogo-Sha can manifest in their own real-size forms. The landscape is the same as for his Hobotsusen, however the weather when there are others in his world is incredibly snowy. During the day in the real world, the sky is dark, and there is a blizzardous flurry of snow that falls constantly. But during the night in the real world, the whole place is covered in a thick blanket of snow.
Unlike the Hobotsusen, the Sōkyokusen is opened when he uses a surge of reiatsu to bring another being inside of it. This can only be done with the other party's consent (OOC and IC consent required), and their bodies disappear in the real world. It cannot be used during combat as Toshi is unable to enter the meditative state required.
But Toshi doesn't know it yet so this is him "training" the tech.
There was a moment where Mihri began to wonder what trouble she seemed to have happened upon. Mihri had taken a duty off the roster, another squad needed a body to cover a patrol. Ever diligent, Mihri took the job, unaware of whatever adventure might lay ahead. This random human blessed with absurd spiritual power had by chance found and greeted her, he had passed her test of strength and legality, and presented his powers that happened to be alive. Toshi happened to be on par with Lieutenants, he happened to be able to fling his Reiryoku like a pro. He was a powerful and fascinating curiosity. And Mihri just so happened to think of him as a new friend.
She wondered what other Shinigami would have done in her situation. Would they have attacked him? Arrested him? Or would they have simply disregarded him? How many would have followed the proper procedure like she had? Any other options Mihri perceived as the wrong answer. Mihri was not the type to throw her weight around unnecessarily or disregard something that might be a threat to the balance. And is it happened - Toshi was the exact opposite of a threat to the balance. And as Toshi's eyes lit up, when he took Mihri's and offered for her to enter his inner world, Mihri knew this night had happened just the way it should have.
"Yes, my friend, I will." She held his hand tightly, and fixed her pale blue eyes on his as hers glimmered blue with Reiatsu.
"I hope you know what you're doing, Mihri." Mokin muttered in the back of her mind. She did not, and did not fear that fact.
[ooc: no worries this is turning out to be a good thread. I give ooc permission etc.]
As she grasped his hand, a light formed at the point of contact, which rapidly spread out and enveloped the both of them in a glowing blue bubble which seemed to pulsate slightly with Toshi's pulse for a couple of moments and then... *pop!* It burst, leaving behind nothing in its wake, the two of them having completely disappeared. Toshi and Mihri were pulled, deep along the Hyperbola. If Mihri was quick perhaps she would see the cone; she would see them travelling along its intersection, and how the curves stretched off infinitely. It was highly abstract... Almost Eldritchian in nature. At the very base of that curve, at the point between its two vertexes... That was the world which they were entering.
After but a blink of a moment, they would open their eyes and there they would be stood. In a world covered in a dusting of snow. The usually mars-red soil and sandstone of Toshi's inner world was completely submerged in a sea of bright white light that reflected the moonlight with a dazzling gleam. Far below, rivers could be seen cutting through the white landscape and far in the distance, forests stuck out, frozen over. Toshi wondered at the place; he'd never seen it like this before.
He dashed to the edge of the mesa they were stood upon, and gazed out over the distance, far and wide. He hadn't seen snow in a good long time... It was truly a thing to marvel at. Had it been Mihri's presence here that had caused this? As he stood on the edge, he turned around to face her, his usual silliness and gruffness nowhere to be seen. He smiled wide.
"Mihri-san I..." he said sofly, trailing off. He began to speak again but before he could get a single word out there was a muffled spashing noise, as he was hit square in the face with a snowball. He wiped his now sodden face free of snow, his wet hair plastered to his forehead, to see Kanaboshi giggling some distance off behind Mihri, approaching them at a run. Kasei was running behind Kanaboshi a concerned look plastered upon her face. He scowled, but it didn't last long as Kanaboshi ran straight up to him, leaping straight at him. Toshi shouted, teetering backwards. He was going to fall off of the mesa and Kanaboshi with him!
At least that was how it looked for a second. Kanaboshi got an oddly flat look on her face, her smile stretched into a devilish grin, as she held a finger, poking to Toshi's chest as if joking that she would push him off, but after a couple of moments of suspense, she instead pulled him back to safety. He looked at her, his face angry, and for a moment it looked like he would explode with rage, but instead, both of them collapsed in a heap on top of one another in a fit of laughter.
Kasei approached Mihri, a single drop of exasperated perspiration falling down the side of her face as she looked at the two idiots before her. She looked at Mihri, getting the shinigami's measure now that the two Hogo-Sha were real sized. She was... Really pretty. Conversely, seeing the two sprites in real size might reveal something more about them to Mihri. Despite Kasei's demure and shy nature, she was clearly the much "older" of the two, standing at almost exactly Mihri's height. She was clearly a "senior high student" age girl. Kanaboshi on the other hand was a kid. Still just a Jr. High student.
Toshi and Kanaboshi got up from their laughing. The girls were kitted out in fashionable snow-gear, to deal with the cold conditions. They both had fur lined hoods, and knitted mittens, which were splendidly colour-co-ordinated. The two girls stood before the shinigami and bowed in unison.
"Mihri san! Welcome to our home!" they said at the same time. "And welcome also, to Zanpakuto-san!" they said, giving a thumbs up, each with the arm in between them. Toshi came and warmly tousled Kanaboshi's hair, standing behind the two spirits. Kasei, who was only a few inches shorter than Toshi, nestled her head in the crook of his neck.
