It was a warm day, not overly hot by any means, with a slight breeze to keep things cool despite having to wear an all black robe. Luckily for Mei, she didn't mind the heat, and often trained in it. It made for a good sweat. But today was not a day for training, no, it was a rest day, and instead she decided she would keep the legs from stiffening up and taking a walk through the Seireitei. Having left the Second Division barracks, she began to walk, at a slow pace, through the various passageways that led through the core of the Soul Society, passing small groups of other Shinigami, she would simply nod and smile in their direction, greeting them, though it often went unanswered. It didn't bother her, really, she was used to the life of solitude, and often tuned out the other Shinigami during training sessions. A martial artist could adapt, and while that was true, she preferred to focus, meditate, and learn as much about herself as possible. Rounding a corner, the tanned girl nearly bumped into another Shinigami, they both nodded their apologies and continued on their way, That was a mutual respect, both knew it was an accident, not that it mattered if he wanted to throw down, she was a martial artist, after all.
Having continued on her walk, she came to a four way, stopping, she decided she would continue straight and check out the training grounds, though she had no intention of training, she often enjoyed watching the others duke it out in an attempt to better themselves. Even the smallest amount of improvement was something to be proud of, and seeing the looks on their faces made her own chest well with pride. Closing the gap between the road and the grass, she remained on the outskirts of the training grounds, glancing around, there were several pairs of Shinigami training various arts. Some spat out Kidou at target dummies, while others fought with their swords, fists, and other types of weapons. The rythmic sound of weapons slamming into the wood dummies was almost calming to her, she lived and breathed combat, and while most found excitement in a battle, she found only calmness. It was always a test to her ability, but she never allowed herself to get worked up, it often caused mistakes, and in a real fight, one mistake could mean death, and she wasn't quite ready to die. Her eyes fell on one particular Shinigami training in Hakuda, slamming her fists into the dummy over and over, though she looked more like a boxer than your typical martial artist.
She had shoddy footwork, and her punches weren't aimed at any of the vital spots that could render an opponent useless, but she also appeared to be relatively new to the style, and while Mei was a martial artist and the stances were pretty straight forward, she would not offer insight on boxing. Besides, it wasn't her place anyway. Shrugging, she turned and began to walk the way she came, this time opting to go right at the four way, though she wasn't exactly sure where it lead, it didn't matter. Not only was the fresh air good for her body, but the walking helped to keep her muscles loose and stretched after an intense workout. Continuing her walk, she came to a small clearing that veered off down another path, but in this clearing was a group of younger Shinigami that appeared to be playing some sort of game with a ball, bouncing it back and forth and doing small tricks using only their feet, legs, and knees. Kinda like hacky sac. She paused a moment, leaning against the wall, to watch as they got more and more elaborate with their tricks. It was impressive, really. With footwork like that, they could be great martial artists!
When the group had noticed Mei watching them, they stopped and asked if she wanted to join in, but she simply shook her head and smiled. Thanking them for their offer, she continued on her walk, taking the path that veered off from the clearing, Reaching into her robe, she pulled out a small bottle of water and took a quick swig of it, screwing the cap back on and placing it back in its hiding spot, while it wasn't overly hot, it was still good to stay hydrated. Passing another duo of Shinigami in the tight corridor, she nodded and moved off to the side so they could pass, they returned the nod and thanked her. It was nice to know that not all the young people had lost their manners. She pressed onward, strolling past a few more Shinigami before coming to another crossroads, pondering for a moment, she decided she would go left this time. Though it looked familiar, and rounded the fifth division grounds, which forced her to go pass larger groups of Shinigami, most of which didn't seem to know the words 'excuse me'. After being bounced back and forth, from body to body, she managed to push her way through them, and managed to make it to a clear pathway. Hopefully this one wouldn't round another Divisions grounds. At least not one that was overly busy.
She yawned and stretched as she walked, though she was used to rigorous exercise, merely walking the distance of the Seireitei was boring, and drained her more than ten hours of training would. The fresh air was nice, though, and the break helped clear her mind, allowed her to prepare for her next day of training. While her thoughts wandered from time to time, about her duties, the next step in her life as a member of the Gotei, and the Second Division, she tried her best not to linger on them too long. It didn't really stress her out, but she knew that if she continued to think, she would wind up training, and then her rest day would be all but ruined. Sighing, she gave her head a brief shake and continued on her way, eyes darting off to the side, noticing a few Shinigami repairing some of the shingles on the upper portion of the wall. Drawing energy back into them and replacing the broken ones, perhaps destroyed in a scuffle, or a failed attempt at a Shunpo. It wasn't often they had to physically repair something, when they did, there was usually a good reason. Shrugging, she continued on her way, splitting off down a separate path towards the Third Division.
The third Division wasn't one she knew too terribly well, having only met a few members during her time as a Shinigami, but they were often well spoken, polite, and pretty tough. Still, she wouldn't linger long, she only wished to try and catch a glimpse of a few, see if any were training or practicing. However, when she rounded the corner and entered the outskirts of their grounds, she saw only a few lone souls wandering off to do their business. Most paid her no mind, while a few gave her a wave and a smile, which she promptly returned. There was no animosity between divisions, though sometimes there were rivarlies. She hadn't created any of those, yet, but she hoped one day someone would see her as someone worth challenging, if only to prove she was as skilled as she thought. If she could climb through the ranks, she would have a chance at working closer to Sui Feng, and she would learn even more, thus becoming stronger and more versatile in combat. She was a martial artist master, knowing several different styles, but there was always room to learn, to grow. Smiling at the thought, she continued on through the grounds, exiting on the far side, and taking another path that would lead her to the Fourth Division. They were usually pretty busy, even if the wounds were only minor, and she wouldn't bother them, but she enjoyed watching them work. If not for them, many more Shinigami would fall to their wounds. It was thanks to them that they lived to fight and protect another day. As she carried on, she took out her bottle of water once more, taking another long swig, allowing its coolness to wash out the warmth of the sun that she felt. It was refreshing, and while the sun wasn't unbearable, it was uncomfortable. The water helped to alleviate that a little.
She rounded a few more corners, glancing off in a few random directions from time to time to see if there was anything interesting going on. There was not. It seemed to be an awfully quiet day despite all the duties that the Shinigami had to regularly attend to, though she knew most worked in shifts. It was good to have a break from time to time, it ensured that no one would become over tired or over worked, making them less effective in combat. She knew how detrimental that could be, having lost a spar once due to being too tired with aching muscles, though she did her best to fight through it, the exhaustion had made her slower than her opponent. Luckily, it was just that, a spar. Encroaching upon the Fourth divisions grounds, she saw the main building not far off, Shinigami bustling in and out as some were discharged, and others were looking to have wounds treated. She had been treated here once, nothing major, a few bruised ribs and a sprained wrist, but they fixed her right up and she was good to go. Smiling at the memory, she peeked in through one of the windows, watching the Shinigami treat their patients with smiles. Always patient, and always caring.
While she would have loved to visit with some of the healers, perhaps learn a thing or two, they were busy and had their own duties to attend to. Perhaps another day. With one last glance in the window, she turned and began to walk once more, this time heading towards the Seventh Division. Although she had only seen Komamura in passing and never met the Captain, she had heard he was a very noble and caring leader. His squad looked up to him and most strived to be as honorable as him. A good trait to have, though not always the best for combat. Honorable could get you killed, in war, especially with Hollow, there could be no honor. They were creatures bent on devouring and killing, and they did not fight fair. Besides that, it was something that she respected and admired about a leader, and tried to be an honorable warrior as well. She would need to be, if she had any hope of someday leading. It was another reason she admired Sui Feng, though her form of honor was more... subtle, it was still there. "One day, I'll be serving directly under you!" She fist pumped to herself, only to realize how foolish she appeared to the passing Shinigami. Chuckling, she waved and power walked passed them.
Having closed the gap between the fourth and the seventh, she glanced around the outer grounds. Many Shinigami here were drinking, sparring, or playing some form of game. Most of them were large and bulky, though appeared to be quite agile despite their size. There were a few smaller individuals, but compared to most, they were all rather large. Perhaps they excelled in physical strength, and relied less on speed. She wasn't sure, never having sparred anyone from the seventh, and she certainly did not hate the idea. Sometimes strength over speed was a good thing, and sometimes it wasn't. It really depended on the opponent. Glancing over, someone was beckoning her over to play a game of dice, she considered it for a moment, but shook her head and politely waved it off. Gambling was never her forte and she didn't feel like losing the little bit of money that she did have on her. It was almost noon and she was beginning to feel hungry, her money would be better spent filling her belly. The other Shinigami shrugged and went back to their game, turning their backs on her. She had hoped to catch a glimpse of Komamura, but there was no sight of him. Off doing Captain things, most likely. She turned, and began to walk once more. This time, towards somewhere she could get some food.
Having made her way towards some of the shops, she glanced around trying to decide on what she wanted to eat. It was a rest day, so she didn't have to be overly picky and eat only the most absolutely healthy food. Whatever she ate today, she would work off tomorrow, and then some. There were a few ramen stops, some meat stores, and some sushi. She decided on the sushi, they always prepared it perfectly and the dishes were pretty good. Walking in, she ordered a few things off the menu and waited for them to box it up for her. It didn't take long, five minutes or so, paying for her items, she popped the box open and grabbed her chop sticks, preferring to eat while on the move. There were still a few Divisions she hadn't visited yet, and decided the First would be her next stop. Turning the opposite direction, she began to head towards their main quarters, all while eating her food. It was delicious as usual, and just filling enough that she wouldn't feel hungry again in twenty minutes. Empty carbs had that effect on most people and she tried to stay away from them. Luckily for her, this had everything she needed. Scraping the box clean, she finished off her dish and tossed it in the garbage as she walked, getting closer to the First.
Not only was the First Division well known because of the Captain Commander himself, but it stood out because of the large building that seemed to tower over all others. From what she had heard, it was the main office of Yamamoto and served not only as his personal quarters, but somewhere within that building was a meeting room where the Captains discussed matters of importance, though it had been quiet as of late. It was her goal, to one day attend those meetings, donning the Haori that signified a Captains rank, where she could lead her forces into battle against the Hollow, and whoever else decided to take up arms against the Soul Society. She was a long ways off, but she was determined, and sometimes that's all it took. Smiling as she stared up at the building, she knew she could go no further. Even if she could, she wouldn't want to. Being able to take in the full view of the massive building was something unique, and getting closer would only hide its full display. Satisfied, she turned and decided she would pay a visit to the Sixth Division. Led by a noble, but highly respected for his combat prowess. Even if he was the silent type.
When she had first gone through the academy, the Sixth Division was where she was hoping to be placed, having heard many things about Byakuya Kuchiki, but her natural ability in Hakuda and melee combat put her in the Second. She was happy, and it worked out for the best, but she had always been curious about the 'what if'. Would she have gotten as good at martial arts as she was now? Would she have been as interested in them? Perhaps she would have pursued a different skill, and maybe she would have never gotten as strong as she was. No, she was glad she was placed under Sui Feng, it gave her a goal to strive for, to learn. Still, as she walked towards the Sixth, she hoped to catch a glimpse of the Captain, even if just briefly. Unfortunately, it had been quiet today and she had not seen a single Captain, not even her own, so she had assumed there was some business being taken care of. Or she was simply unlucky. Either way, the walk around Soul Society had done her body good so far.
Rounding a corner, she began to close the gap between the Divisions, nearing the edges of the Sixth Divisions grounds. It was probably the most elegant, compared to the other Divisions, though they all had their own charms and flares, the Sixth was more... floral. It was nice, but she figured she would probably grow tired of the smells after awhile. Wandering around the outer grounds, she kept her head on a swivel looking for the Captain, but had no luck. All she saw were a handful of different Shinigami rushing off to take care of whatever duties that had been assigned to them. She was incredibly unlucky today. Sighing, she continued to look, slowly making her way to the outer edges of their grounds once more, figuring she would probably have more luck near the Eleventh. Kenpachi was never really one for normal Captain duties, and if she had a chance of seeing any of the Captains today, it would be him. Though they were renown for their combat prowess, some of the best swordsman called Eleventh home, they were also brutes. While she did not rely on Kidou if she could help it, it had come in handy a few times and she couldn't imagine not using it at all. With one look back, she slowly made her way towards the Eleventh.
She had always wanted to spar someone from the Eleventh as well, and though today would have been the perfect opportunity, she was still on rest day. She was sure there would be someone willing to fight, but any offers she would receive, she would have to turn down. Walking, she neared the Eleventh grounds, glancing around at all the Shinigami, they varied in appearance, some were incredibly large and brutish, while some were smaller but held a... crazy look about them. They all had one thing in common: they looked like they wanted to fight. It didn't take long for someone to call her out, and issue a challenge. She attempted to politely decline, and they attempted to goad her with insults, of both her, and the Division she belonged to, and while she would have rose to the challenge on any other day, this was not the purpose of her visit. She did stop to tell them that any day after today, she would gladly fight them, even if it were to be a two on one. They laughed, of course, thinking she was foolish for issuing such a challenge, but she would be able to handle her own.
Ignoring the goading and taunts as she walked, she attempted to catch sight of Kenpachi now, eyes darting back and forth, expecting him to burst forth and issue a challenge of his own. Still, nothing. Not even a glimpse of him, his haori, or even Yachiru. Another sigh of defeat. It just wasn't her day. Turning around and heading the opposite way of the Shinigami, she decided she would head over to the Thirteenth. Though she knew that she DEFINITELY would not catch sight of Ukitake, it was better than being here, where the taunts were getting rather annoying now. The Captain had been showing some small signs of improvement, or so she had heard, but was apparently still pretty sick, and had his random bouts of exhaustion where he would have to retreat to his quarters and lay down. It must have been a tough burden to bear, to lead a Division while battling an untreatable, and unknown illness. It was definitely tough, and she admired his resolve to push through and do what he could. She wasn't sure she would have the same iron-clad determination. She wasn't weak willed, but an illness made fighting hard, and she was a warrior. Luckily for her, she did not have to put that to the test.
The Thirteenth Captain was a gentle soul, kind, much like Shunsui. She had often seem them together, sharing a drink and some laughs. Both were approachable and incredibly humble, and she respected them greatly because of it. Despite their power, and position, they never held themselves in overly high regard, treating others as if they were on equal grounds, but yet were more than capable of leading and commanding when the time called for it. An admirable trait for sure. Rukia was also the Lieutenant, and while she had never met her, she had heard great things about her. If she was lucky, she would get to spar with her one day. She had many hopes and dreams of sparring with many different people, if only to prove her own strength, and see how far along she had come as a fighter. She was prepared to take one any challenge that came her way, but she wanted to win each one. If she lost, she would have to improve. If she survived the encounter. Mountains of challenges awaited her, but she wouldn't back down. Not until she knew her limits, and what she could do.
Lost in thought, she hadn't even realized that she had arrived at the Thirteenth Division grounds. Not until she nearly bumped into a Shinigami who was rushing off, nearly dropping his stack of papers on the way. He mumbled something under his breath as Mei attempted to apologize, but he wasn't having any of it. She shrugged it off, apparently some of Ukitakes traits hadn't rubbed off on his subordinates. No matter, she continued on her leisurely stroll, stopping long enough to take a quick swig of her water before continuing on. It was getting late now, though she still had an hour or so before the sun went down completely, she wasn't quite ready to return to her quarters just yet. She glanced around, as expected, no visible sign of Ukitake either, she wasn't as disappointed, knowing his condition and all, it was to be expected. Turning, she thought for a moment. Only two more Divisions left to visit, and she wasn't too fond of going near the Twelfth Division, but she figured it would kill time, and reluctantly, she headed towards their Division. With a slower than normal pace of walking.
Its not like she was scared of the twelfth or anything, they just creeped her out a bit. They always seemed to be looking for new test subjects, and she did not want to be one of them. Whatever they concocted behind closed doors, she did not want to be a part of. Though she had to admit, their grounds were pretty damn impressive too. The research and development building was huge, and while it looked rather plain from the outside, she could only imagine just how advanced it was inside. Mayuri was a brilliant Shinigami, and some of the devices he had created had saved many lives. They were essential to their duties in the human world now, tracking Hollows, having access to gigai's when needed, and being able to make calls back to Soul Society when needed. Still, she didn't want to see what happened to 'volunteers' first hand. Nearing the grounds, she could see the research building up ahead, an impressive structure, not as large as Yamamoto's headquarters, but impressive in its own right. Luckily for her, there were no Shinigami wandering around here. Perhaps busy with experiments inside. What a relief.
She was glad to avoid any direct interaction with the Shinigami from the Twelfth, not because she disliked them, but because she was sure they would ask her to volunteer for some projects or experiments, and if she refused, she was unsure if they would simply take her and no one would ever know the difference. Luckily, that was not the case. Not wanting to spend any more time here, she decided she would head to the Eighth and see if Shunsui was about, perhaps having a drink. Turning, she began to walk the opposite way, not wanting to look back just in case someone saw her last moment. Nothing. She made a 'phew' noise as she hurried off, quickening her pace towards the Eighth. It was getting darker now, and she wanted a quick glimpse before heading back to her quarters and retiring for the night. Having closed the distance between the Divisions, she began to look around, looking for any sight of Shunsui, but there was none. Though she could hear a few hearty cheers and laughing in the distance, presumably from Shinigami who had been drinking for awhile. No Shunsui, though. Smiling, she turned, and decided she would call it a night.
It had been a rather long day, walking the entirety of the Soul Society, while not having spotted a single Captain. It was a shame, really, but they had things to attend to, and didn't expect them to just be out for a casual walk as she was. Perhaps another time she would run into one of them, maybe learn a thing or two. Turning back towards the Second Division, she began to walk back to her own quarters. If she was lucky, she would catch sight of Sui Feng before she retired for the night. Though she doubted she would get any acknowledgement or greetings, it would still be nice. One day, she would spar with her Captain, and show how skilled she was in the martial arts, and perhaps even win. It was far fetched and unlikely, but there was always that little bit of hope. It was far off, but one day. Smiling as she neared the Second Division, she took the long way on purpose, looking for any sign of Sui Feng, even going so far as to pass by her quarters. The lights were on, which meant she was awake, but she chose not to bother her. Instead, she turned towards her own barracks, and headed towards bed.
