Toshi wiped the sweat off his brow. Damn highschoolers, so nerve wracking. As a young graduate student, sometimes his department would ask him to undertake field trips. This, he could easily do. Toshi had travelled to many places in the world during both his undergraduate and now his graduate degrees, going on digs, finding ruins, searching for treasure and all that other Indiana Jones stuff. But nothing terrified him quite so much as going into schools. Maybe he had gone soft in his "old age" (he is 21; not that old). The guy with the "Punch of the Devil's Right Hand" was still inside Toshi somewhere, he just used it for less destructive purposes. And also, he had to admit that Kanaboshi and Kasei had managed to lighten him up. He was scared of doing or saying something embarrassing. He felt so out-of-touch with highschoolers nowadays anyway. He couldn't exactly punch his way out of a situation where he said something dumb or wrong now, could he!?
He had been in Karakura High telling the students about archaeology. Now, he was outside, waiting by the entrance. He just wanted to breathe for a few moments before he left. He wondered if any of the senior students would recognise him? Surely legends of Toshi "Punch of the Devil's Right Hand" would still ring around the whole school? Maybe the drawing of himself he had scratched into the wall of the boys toilets would inspire fear into a generation of delinquents. Any moment now the students would come out of the school, maybe they would approach him. There had been one girl in the class he had been lecturing to that appeared to have spiritual power, which intrigued Toshi somewhat. Her name had been Mori, he had seen on the register, Mori Mae. Hopefully he would see her and be able to strike up a conversation somehow.
Mae was breathing heavily as she enters the women's bathroom. She then signaled Lotis to come out to tell her about the thing she had felt when she was in her class. "I did felt that." Said Lotis. "That was weird unless that guy was hiding something from us, he could be a bad person in disguise or worse!" Mae protests. "Just be careful Mae you know that I can't be always there to protect you." Lotis then returns to her bracelet as they depart the place. She then bought some food to eat on her free time. "I really wish that, that guy didn't sense me at all." Mae thoughts to herself. She then prepares herself for her the next class but then, her eyes suddenly turned wide as she saw the man that seemingly looked suspicious. Her heart then beats really fast as the agony that she was facing right now turned out to be the most aggravating thing she have ever encountered. Sure she met numerous beings in her lifetime but due to her surroundings, she doesn't want to create a scene. She then ran as fast she can to avoid eye contact but in turn she dropped her bracelet. "Phew, finally I managed to get away from him."
Toshi sensed her before he saw her. He hated himself that his reiatsu sense- for he knew what that was now- immediately categorized her in terms of race and level of threat. He hated that he was comparing this girl to the hollows he'd fought and the shinigami he'd fought alongside. Toshi had been much happier when his world had just been chasing monsters and talking to ghosts. It had been like some kind of punky monster of the week show! And now... Now everything was so damned complicated. And he was still expected to go and do research and pretend life was normal. Either way, he didn't notice her scurry away at the sight of him, as he was so preoccupied in his own thoughts. It was actually one of his Hogo-Sha, speaking inside his mind, that alerted him that there was something wrong.
"Toshi, she dropped her bracelet! I think it's spiritual, can you sense it's power?" Kanaboshi asked and he started. He looked up and saw the bracelet. Indeed, it looked like something the girl had been wearing. It was pretty unique to see such an item on a schoolchild, since they were usually so restrained by their uniform rules so it wasn't hard to pick out. He strode forwards and picked it up, before walking swiftly, following Mae by her reiatsu more than anything else.
"Imoutosan! I think you dropped your bracelet!" Toshi called out to her, offering it before him in a large tanned hand. It had been a while since he'd worn uniform, he mused as he saw the scattered students now emerging from the school. He himself was dressed in black trousers, a white shirt, some suspenders and a dickie bow, complete with a tweed jacket with elbow patches. Well if you were coming to talk as an archaeologist, you had to look the part, right?
Mae nervously turned around and grabbed her bracelet. "Arigato." Mae then quickly proceeded to her destination while in panic. She then found an isolated corner to summon Lotis. "I'm so sorry Lotis, I didn't mean it." Mae begged. "Oh really Mae ugh let's just forget about it, though I might need to tell you something about that guy..." Lotis flies around Mae while waiting for her answer. "What is it?" Mae asks. "You're right about that guy and I also heard him talking to someone that I can't seem to pinpoint." Lotis worriedly gave all the information to Mae. "I see so he must either be a normal human or a substitute shinigami." Mae measures the possibility of his race. "He can't be a threat then so don't worry about it Mae." she calms Mae to let her be in relief. Mae then proceeded to her last class without worrying about the guy she had encountered with.
The bell started to ring. "Finally it's over!" She the let herself stay in school due to excessive works that they gave to her for being the president of her class. When she finished all the work that she has been tasked to do, she rushed outside of the building and let out a sigh of relief. "How I wish that tomorrow doesn't exist..." An unusual sound suddenly alarmed her of her surroundings. "Gyaah" A being suddenly appeared in front of her. She suddenly screamed loudly in hope that someone in the campus might hear her. "Really Mae?! I thought we have talked about this. You shouldn't stay in this at this late hour!" Lotis suddenly stopped lecturing Mae when they saw the hallow charges in front of them. "Mori no Tate, I commence!" A shield forms around Mae, blocking the incoming attack. "I really regret my decisions in life!" The shield successfully blocked the incoming attack but it only created a distance between them. "This is bad!"
Mae now knows the truth behind her powers. Defensively she can continue an event to be stopped or make it like it didn't happen at all. The shield is now increased in size plus, it can be bend a bit to look like the one fourth of a bracelet while making the shield sturdier than before. The shield could be performed by the following Nymphs; Echo, and Daphne with the incantation "Mori no Tate," followed by "I commence."
She thanked him and immediately ran away. Huh, what a strange girl. Toshi frowned, not sure what to do. His train wasn't due to leave for another couple of hours. The Kagamis lived nearby, Toshi considered dropping in and paying them a visit, but then figured that maybe that might be a bit weird. He didn't really know them well enough, although they seemed quite nice. Instead he just dropped into a café and popped open his laptop and spent a few hours drinking capuccino and writing his report. The thought that the place he had beat up kids and been beat up by kids as a youth was strange to him as he sat there working on a paper for publication in the Oriental Journal of Archaeology. The world had a habit of leading you back places you'd been after a long time and though the co-ordinates were the same, the place itself seemed totally different, somehow.
It was as the day was drawing to a close that he felt it. The rippling, stalking presence of a hollow. With a rapdiness that shocked the people around him, he packed his things and slung his satchel over his shoulder, barely having enough time to shout a hurried arigatou over his shoulder before he headed out of the door. He saw the hollow attacking the girl from earlier. She threw up a hasty looking shield, but to no avail, as the hollow smashed right through it. Toshi wasn't gonna make it in time! He put on a sudden burst of speed, sounding a little like a roadrunner from a cartoon as he did so, and activated his high speed motion technique.
In what would appear to Mae to be like a teleport, Toshi would land upon the head of the hollow, and generate a sharp barrier on his right hand, the hand which was strongest. With a yell, he would punch downwards, his punch meant to impale the hollow straight through the mask, shattering it and killing the beast instantly in a fantastic shower of blood. Toshi would tumble down, hitting the ground with a thunk. He groaned. He was getting too old for this and he was barely in his twenties. The gory body of the hollow would fall down next to him. No purification for this one, he thought, sighing internally.
"Are you okay imoutosan?" he asked the girl with a groan.
Mae's eyes were widen by the sudden attack, in fact she didn't even move for a minute. "A-arigato..." She tried to stood up slowly to gain back her balance. Without any other words to say, she rushed outside to relief herself. "I could have handled that hallow myself!" She bragged. "Really Mae... We could have died there!" Lotis said. "I know but..." Lotis then ordered Mae to go back to him but she just hesitated to do it. She then continued to go further away from the school, seemingly getting lost. "Where are we Lotis?" She asks. "I really don't know... Oh my! Are we lost?" Lotis protests. "No... Maybe it's just too dark here." Mae then peeks to an alley where she saw a group of adults doing some random stuff that she couldn't see. One of them saw her and looked at her with intent. The group got his attention and goes towards Mae. "What are you doing!?" Mae protests as one of them held her captivated in his arms. "Help! Somebody help me!" She tried to struggle from him but it didn't work. "Young lady no one can here you hear so just come with us and have some fun." Mae then continued to call for help, hoping that someone might hear her.
Toshi was absolutely flabbergastered. He didn't exactly expect he deserved the attention of this girl but... He'd have thought that she would at least want to stay and chat given what she had just seen. Were spiritually aware people so common now that it wasn't even worth stopping to talk to one of them. He was a little disgruntled but he didn't bother running after her. She was just a highschool girl and he didn't really want to get in trouble for following her around, especially given that he was some four or five years her senior. In all likelihood it would be considered exceptionally suspicious. Instead, he sighed and started his walk home.
"You just wanted to talk to her because she's cute." Kanaboshi grumbled inside Toshi's head. He scowled internally, if there was such a thing. He supposed maybe she was right, that had been one motivation. But mainly he just didn't want to be alone as a spiritual being. All he met were shinigami and other crazies. Maybe just a nice highschool girl who understood what daily life as a normal guy... Or gal, with spiritual powers was like.
"But you have us, you don't have to be lonely." Kasei said, reading his mind from inside his mind. He hated when they did that, but she was right. Toshi gave a sigh. He couldn't just throw a pity party. Holdstering his satchel he decided to head back towards the train station so he could head back towards home. He was too confused to get any work done today so there was no point in heading back to College.
"Yeah, you guys are right I guess." he said dejectedly, before starting the walk back to the station, satchel slung over his shoulder. He couldn't wait to get home and watch some tv and eat popcorn, not having to think about spirits or ruins or anything. He seemed to have no friends around here any more, and while his Hogo-Sha were nice, it'd be great to have some real human friends.
On his way to the T, he passed an alleyway, and he thought he heard the sound of a voice calling. Toshi was a pretty stand-up guy. While he'd had a bit of a reputation as a punk or a delinquent while he was at highschool, he only ever really beat up other bullies or people who themselves were causing mischief. Not especially out of an overactive sense of justice back then, mostly just because those types of people pissed him off. But those same instincts served him well now, as he peeked down the alleyway. A bunch of guys from a neighbouring highschool and also, imoutosan! A letter man might have considered her snub as a reason not to intervene here; she was clearly being assaulted but such a thought never crossed the mind of Toshi. He stepped down the alleyway, his reiatsu flaring angrily.
"You ever consider that that ain't no way to treat a lady you piece of literal human garbage?" he asked cocking his head. The guy who seemed to be the leader of the delinquents, and who had grabbed Mae, looked up.
"What was that you piece of shit?" he asked angrily. "I'm gonna give you one chance to say you're sorry and get tha fuck outta here and we'll just forget about that little indiscretion, hmm?" he asked, his bug-eyed face angry. Toshi looked at Mae and then at the three guys. He could take these assholes. Just watch him.
"How about we stop with all the vulgar language around a girl. I'll give you three seconds to let her go and then I'll only give you a black eye, not a broken nose."
"I'd take him up on that offer if I were you, you're ugly enough as is." A girl wearing a blue school uniform, with spiky brown hair and large olive eyes appeared next to Toshi. Toshi himself was now glowing with a pale aura, his hair spiky, and there were suddenly tattoos all over his body. He hadn't even realized that he had released his inner powers.
With the same roadrunner sound, Toshi appeared to teleport to just in front of the guy holding Mae, and spinkicked him in the face. At the same time, the brown-haired schoolgirl would grab hold of Mae, and pull her away from her assailants. Toshi's kick would send the guy flying straight into an open dustbin, and he quickly faced the remaining to guys, fists raised. Hopefully they would all turn tail and run the hell away at this juncture.
{Spoiler}Name: Late for Work! Class: Stepping Type: Step Range: Self Tier: I Description: Toshi's unique stepping technique. It is usually accompanied by a a cartoonish noise similar to a racecar going by (like roadrunner), and is accompanied by several odd after-images of Toshi looking extraordinarily panicked as if he is running very late for work.
Name: Guardian Summon! Class: Human Powers Tier: V Type: Summon Range: 100m Description: Toshi may summon one of his spirit guardians while released, creating bodies for them out of reiatsu. When he does this, he loses the ability to use any of his spirits' powers, and the corresponding marks on his body to all but the summoned guardian stop glowing, and become dull and brown. The summoned spirit, meanwhile, can use only their own powers. (e.g. if Kanaboshi were summoned, she would be unable to use Kasei's powers). When destroyed, their bodies simply disappear, and they go back to Toshi's mind. Toshi can dispel them any time he wants. Only a single Guardian at a time may be summoned in this way. They may be summoned for up to 7 posts, with a cooldown of twice the length they are summoned. The summons use the same reiryoku pool as Toshi - i.e. they trigger his cooldowns and visa versa. The extra length is due to Toshi losing all of his Guardians' powers while the summoning happens.
Kasei is Toshi's second guardian. She is taller, and older in appearance than Kanaboshi. She is quite retreating and shy, as well as being nervous but she loves Kanaboshi and Toshi very much and wants to use her power to help protect them. She shouts Kanaboshi down for bullying Toshi a lot, but finds it hard to accept Toshi's thanks- she seems to have romantic feelings towards him, which seems strange, so she suppresses them.
Mae was mesmerized by the event that has happened though this time it didn't stop her from thanking the person for what he has done for her. "Arigato again... I wish that I could repay on somehow..." Mae then saw one of the man standing. She suddenly kicked his face, knocking him unto the floor. "Hmmph." She groans as she gave a displeasing look towards the man. "Maybe I could introduce myself to you then, My name is Mae what's yours?" She smiles joyfully as she grab his hand and asks him if he would like to go for some ramen. "Sorry for leaving you back then... I just wanted to at least test my skills to prove that I could at least prove something." She then looked at him with blush. "I'm sorry senpai for doing that." She then repeated it again and again while waiting for his answer. "I knew it!" Lotis then appeared out of nowhere. "You're male!" she protests. "Huh? Did you just assume his gender? Isn't it obvious that his a man?" Lotis then goes in front of Toshi and said. "I thought that you're a gay." She laughs, after that she quickly returned to her diamond state.
"Nice kick." the brown haired girl, Kasei, said to Mae. She regarded her with a reserved smile. Kasei could get quite jealous. Toshi accepted the handshake, giving her a firm but not overpowering shake. Okay, now this seemed a little more reasonable.
"Ramen sounds good, I know somewhere near the central station." Toshi said. He was still glowing, his body covered in markings that signified the release of his powers. "My name is Dunson. Toshi Dunson. And this here is Kasei." he said by way of introduction. She explained her previous actions. She just wanted to prove herself. That was strange he supposed but then again, plenty of people felt like they had something to prove. Hell he'd spent the second half of highschool beating up dudes who seemed to have something to prove to him.
It was then that the strange spiritual powers revealed themselves. Lotis emerged, and said she thought Toshi was gay. What an odd little spirit! Not that Toshi could really say anything given what his Guardian Spirits were like...
"NNNNNNANI!? I'm not gay!" He said, exclaiming dramatically. Kasei started laughing, approaching Lotis before the little spirit disappeared back into Mae's bracelet.
"Mae, Lotis. Please do not be afraid." Kasei said, her big brown eyes smiling as Toshi still reeled away in shock at having been called gay. "I am Toshi's Hogo-Sha. Mae, is Lotis your Hog-Sha?" she asked. Mae's guardian spirit seemed to be much more tiny than Kasei, who was the size of a regular highschool girl.
"Yes she is." Mae silently focused herself and releases her five spirits. The spirits then appeared like fairies from the fables that's often read by kids. "What's the hustle Mae? Do you need me to escort you on your date?" Daphne asks. Mae blushed and stood in silence. "Whoa someone is in love here!" Dione giggles why saying it to Mae. "Can you stop bullying Mae?" Clymene flies in front of the two to knocked them over. "Well Mae isn't that man cute? He might be old but I think he still got something in there." Dione said it while laughing really hard. Echo just flew behind Mae and did nothing. "Can you all please shut up!" Lotis angrily flew behind Dione and Daphne to cover their mouths. Mae apologize for her spirits stubbornness and asks them if they should go to the ramen shop already. Though before that Daphne interrupts Mae saying, "Toshi my name is Daphne. Do you want me to teach you how to get a young girl to be with an old man. You know what they say the older you are the better it gets." Daphne winks at Toshi until Lotis interrupts her and said that she's being inappropriate.
So she too had Hogo-Sha powers. But her Hogo-Sha were different to Toshi's, much like little sprites and they appeared to all come from her bracelet. It was a good job he had given it back to her earlier otherwise she might have found herself without her little guardian sprites. There were five of them; more than Toshi for sure. They were... Pretty cute. And the way they seemed to pick on Mae was quite entertaining but he dared not laugh, to save her embarrassment. There were two who seemed to take especial delight in teasing her and two more who did the opposite, kind of like Kanaboshi and Kasei. Another hid behind Mae; a shy one, it seemed. They all seemed to be saying things which were kind of lewd but Toshi just brushed it off with a laugh.
"It's uuh, nice to meet you Daphne." he said, extending his finger for the little sprite to shake. "You should watch who ya call an old man, ya hear?" he asked with a raised eyebrow. At that moment, Toshi's aura would fade and Toshi's spirit Kasei, would disappear. "Mae, although Kasei was the size of a regular human just then... Usually I have small spirits like you!" he said with a smile, holding up both of his hands.
Instead of hands, however, Toshi's wrists seemed to join onto the waists of two little sprites, about the same size as Mae's. On his right wrist was the green haired Kanaboshi with a big grin and sparkling blue eyes and on his left was the brownhaired girl but in miniature form. Their tiny waists seemed to conjoin perfectly onto Toshi's wrists.
"This is Kanaboshi." The green haired one waved. "And this is Kasei." the brown haired one bowed nervously.
"It is a pleasure to meet you Mae-Chan and Mae-Chan's spirits!" "It is a pleasure to meet you Mae-Chan and Mae-Chan's spirits!"
The two said in unison. "What are the names of your spirits?" Asked Toshi, before he began heading out of the alleyway. If anyone asked them what on earth all their little sprites were, Toshi would simply explain that they were ventriloquist puppeteers coming from a convention. They would walk down the street towards R-Amen, the Jesus-themed ramen shop down the street run by some weird Gaijin.[/font]
