The echoing sounds of stone breaking and crunching as it collided with ground surrounded Seran as he made his way over the uneven, cloudy quartz that made up the surrounding tunnel. Despite being deep below the surface, the eerie eternal light of Hueco Mundo still persisted here, giving the surrounding area a strangely flat appearance due to the lack of shadows.
It had been three days since work on the tunnel had started, beginning in the area of the menos forest directly beneath Las Noches. The arrancar had wanted to excavate by blasting downwards with Cero and their own physical force, but Seran had quickly brought them into line with a description of what it would be like for them to die trapped beneath the stone from the cave-in such methods would lead to. While initially annoyed, the arrancar had taking surprisingly well to mining with pickaxes, the task of destroying in a controlled manner seemed to agree with them. It also helped that they had no need to move the stone back along the tunnel once it was smashed free; as, to Seran’s continued confusion, the black hounds seemed to like eating the quartz stone just as much as the sand in the desert above.
Reaching the end of the downward snaking tunnel, he emerged into a large, carved out cavern where the twelve conscripted arrancar and several black hounds were working. Having reached a suitable depth, They were now expanding outwards to create a central chamber for the mine. Garm and several of the bigger hounds had begun tunneling in the surrounding area, looking for anything differentiated from the seemingly infinite quartz that lay beneath them. One of the arrancar noticed his arrival and set down his pick, walking over briskly to speak with the mod soul.
“You seem to be making quick progress my friend.”
“Indeed Mod Soul, once this space it properly formed we’ll have the perfect staging area for continuing downward.”
“Have any of the dogs returned yet?”
“No. I haven’t seen Garm or any of the others since they started tunneling earlier in the day.”
Seran frowned. That stupid fur-ball had probably found some deeper Menos Forest chamber, no doubt full of hollows for him to distract himself with chasing and eating.
“Your work seems to be ahead of schedule. You should take a break until one of them returns with some useful information. I have some other guests arriving shortly to assist in further excavations, so hopefully the hard part of your job will be over soon, and we’ll only need you to bring up whatever is down here.”
Gage stood outside the entrance to the quarts forest, lighting another cigarrete with a dual arc lighter, the ignition point looking like a taser on a miniature scale. Everything was quiet, the wind having died down momentarily so that he could even hear the ticking of the lighter reverberating back up the tunnel to the surface. There was a lot of digging done here, the tunnel walls being glazed over as if a combination of heat and pressure had blown it in. Around him no evidence of the quartz being pilled up was apparent, the heat must have melted the material down creating the tunnel. At shallower depths that was good, the heat would have melted the walls to be strong enough to resist cave in but as you get deeper the weight of the material would be too much for the think layer of quartz and would cave in.
Heading down into the tunnel he looks about, the light of Hueco Mundo making the walls glow slightly so that even without a source of light it was bright enough to see. Veins of pink rose quarts line the walls, glowing slightly brighter than the rest of the wall, casting the faintest of shadows against the opposite side of the wall. Gage rubs his temple, the abundance of spiritual material all around him making his head ache from the large amounts of spiritual energy around him. Turning a small dial on his wrist band he dials back the amount of energy let into his body, effectively dimming his Reiatsu Sensing skills locking them down to roughly the sensitivity of a regular Shinigami or hollow.
The walk is time consuming but at the very least entertaining, the different veins of stone making for a small light show, his own energy sensing having been weakened enough for him to enjoy it. Pinks, dark purples, your standard whites and opaque stone. Occasionally Gage would even find a patch of blue stone, the largest piece no bigger than a quarter, set behind a thin layer of clear quarts. Flicking the wall where he finds these stones he sends a small dart of green soul communication into the mineral so that it would spit the blue out, similar in appearance to a rock being pulled from jello.
Finally Gage approaches the sound of mining, the click of pick axes echoing up the tunnel. "Seran? You certainly like your work forces large don't you?" Gage rolls the small blue quarts around in his palm like ball bearings, his own spiritual energy compressing the blue into near perfect orbs. Even with all the collecting down the tunnel he was only able to get enough quarts for two stones the size of golf balls. Gage did not like hollow, he did not believe that hollows were capable of rising above their animal nature, the reverting from human form making them become more animalistic than your standard caveman. Seran though seemed to have a touch of finesse with then, getting them to do their work without too much complaint and without blindly going into hunt mode for humans. All around though something caught Gage off guard. Black beasts, hollows without masks, feasting on something. At first Gage is surprised that Seran would have brought him here,'a trap?' But no, it is soon apparent that the dog like monsters are all eating the chipped off stone, consuming the raw resource whole.
Seran’s eyes drifted over to the fullbringer, and then down to his hand where two orbs of blue stone twirled around continuously. He had noticed this behavior before in other humans; the need to occupy the hands with some mundane activity. The habit was curious, and often associated with a need to focus mentally but not physically, as though human hands had their own mind that needed distraction so they would not bother the brain. Seran very nearly smiled. If hands were so easily distracted they probably were not very smart. His eyes returned to the Gage’s face.
“Are you planning on making jewelry? I didn’t take you for the accessory type.”
He followed the fullbringer’s gaze out to where the black hounds were busy feasting away at the rock fragments knocked from the wall. Occasionally one of the arrancar would toss a piece into the air, causing the creatures to leap into the air and fight over the stone as though the toss made it more enticing.
“Do you like my pets? Animalistic Demi-Arrancar, made by tampering with hollow development prior to the mask being shattered. Everyone else has taken to calling them ‘black hounds’. Those ones are just puppies though.”
As if on queue, the ground beneath their feet began to vibrate softly. As the shaking slowly increased, the arrancar working on the chamber halted their work, looking around at the walls of the cavern.
“That’s definitely Garm. Nobody else shakes the walls like that damn mutt.”
Seran frowned.
“About time.”
Then, just a quickly as it had started the vibrations ceased. Seran’s eyes drifted downward to the center of the rugged floor, and the eyes of the arrancar followed. With a echoing crunching sound, the center of the cavern cracked and split open, revealing a furry black shape, greyed somewhat by the powered rock-dust and pieces of quartz covering it. One massive clawed paw appeared, then a second, and for a moment Garm struggled to free himself from the hole he had punched in the craggy floor. He freed himself with another loud crunch, dislodging a few more fragmented pieces of stone, and proceeded to shake himself violently, tossing the contents of his thick coat across the area. The smaller black hounds scampered around, gathering up the discarded stones, the puppy analogy making more sense now they were compared the full grown alpha male. Garm was not big by the standards of hollows, but to a human he would look to be the size of a large full grown bear, with the puppies only the size of a big dogs romping around his legs. Garm ignored small versions of himself biting at his heels and lumbered over in front of Seran and Gage. He gave one large sniff in the fullbringer’s direction, but seem fairly uninterested, opting to slump down into a lounging position with his big head resting on his paws.
“Finally eaten your fill of rocks huh? I was starting to think I’d made a living, breathing, black hole.”
The black hound responded by yawning loudly, his mouth of glowing green teeth opening almost 180 degrees. Seran crossed his arms with annoyance.
“Did you find anything interesting? Or are you just just going to pass out in the middle of the work area to sleep off eating an entire mountain worth of quartz.”
The black hound grinned…. Or snarled…. It was very difficult to tell sometimes; then arched his neck and opened his mouth again. But instead of another yawn, the hollow coughed loudly, and a large……… something…….. Popped sickeningly out of his mouth and onto the floor in front of Seran, still dripping with saliva.
The mod soul paused for moment, somewhat taken aback by the display. His arms unfolded, and he crouched down next to the strange object, looking it over for an entire minute before speaking again.
“In your professional opinion Gage….. what exactly am I looking at?”
Seran was always this way, his demeanor being removed and isolated from the problems of the human world and spiritual world alike. His noticing of Gage playing with the marble like Quartz stones is correct in a sense. He does like to occupy his hands, not as a lack of intelligence but in Gage's eyes idle hands means an idle mind. If you are doing nothing then you are thinking nothing. Then came the jewelry comment, the blue quarts being seem to Seran an simply another gem but there was much more to the gem than meets the eye.
"Don't be rediculous. Quartz is not rare in itself but when found in concentrated forms it turn blue, acting as a capacitor for spiritual energy. On top of that all Quarts is peizoelectric. Generating small amounts of electricity when you apply mechanical force. Spiritual quarts itself is capable of producing more electricity than a twelve volt battery. Pure quartz is able to produce more than 750 kilowatt hours of energy per minuet. That means that we produce more more energy than is in a barrel of oil with these two stones and all it takes is a little bit of stress." Gage squishes the quartz in his hand, the marbles rubbing together creating sparks of electricity that jump from his palm. Sticking the stones into his pocket he looks around,"Puppies? I cant imagine what they are going to look like full grown. What exactly did you-" the shaking ground interrupting him.
"Garm, right," the bear sized beast climbing out of the ground and releasing...contents onto the ground. "Well...I think that is a diamond of some kind." Gage walks up to the stone paying no notice to the bear like dog. Touching the stone he pulls it apart in his mind, green soul communication energy arcing from his finger before it enters the stone. In the instant that the arc of energy enters the stone he learns much, the stone indeed was a diamond, carried up from the heat of the core by a shift in the plate. Then the stone reacts however, the small spark of energy from Gage's Soul communication swirling around the gems core before swelling out of control arcing about the stone as it burns trails into the quartz.
"It seems like your basic Diamond, crystalized carbon but it has a few impurities. Mainly boron and nitrogen but there are a few things in it that I can't identify. What ever is making that energy amplification effect and what is giving it this ability. Gage creates a ball of flame in his palm with just his reiryoku. The flame was small, not dangerous unless held under exposed skin for an extended duration but it did produce light. Holding his hand out to the stone the flame leans, as if a soft breeze were pulling the fire into it. As soon as the stone began to absorb the energy though a fire erupted out the top, exploding upwards with the force of an under developed Cero, Quartz knocking itself loose from the ceiling. With a wave Gage pushes it back up, soul communication sealing the roof back together. "In short...Im not sure. What do you think Seran? Wanna make a necklace now? I bet it would bring out the color in your...bland loveless eyes."
