It had definitely been an interesting few months after she was almost killed by some strange executive and shady type figure. What appeared most disturbing wasn't the fact that she was being hunted, was the fact that somebody she cared about was under somebody else's control, meaning that it was hard to even trust her "friend" beyond the seemingly superficial words that Mai wanted to hear. The first few weeks Mai only worried endlessly, which then was followed by rigorous training of her powers. When she finally came out of that game, she was more exhausted than she had ever been, and it was all likely due to that man being pulled in. His power alone was threatening to overthrow hers, as he was even able to influence some of the events occurring within the game. That alone would have taken even the most experienced players a while to truly understand that workings of her storybook, but this man... he was able to comprehend them in such a way that it seemed like he was already adjusted to how they work.
The previous month looked no better. She'd wait by her window, looking outside to the town center, mug of coffee in hand. She wouldn't get sleep much nights, but when she did, she'd stay in bed all day. It wasn't until she had received a letter from a nameless sender. If it weren't for the obvious scent of perfume, she wouldn't have opened it. The letter only contained a set of instructions to follow, and another sheet. It had folded marks as if it had been in that state for a while, but as she slowly opened it, she began to realize that the parchment was the same piece she had given to her pretty much the day that it all went down. There was nothing there but the last message she had written, and all it contained were instructions about a game they never got to play, at least, not in the way she had intended.
She gathered her things, mostly her pencil and some cash in her wallet. Wearing her red ribbon around her neck, white button down blouse, and short blue jeans complemented by blue chuck taylor's, she walked out of her apartment and down the town road. She wasn't told what exactly she was to expect, just a set of directions that she would take walking out of her apartment building. Following each step, she would find herself in front of a normal looking building with an open door; she wasn't sure if she could just walk in, but for some reason, there was some... familiarity in the air. Pulling her in, she walked through, not entirely sure what to expect.
“Yes, the bank should be with you shortly about transferring the funds. I should be there to sign once I’ve finished looking at the buildings.”
Relators had to be some of the most boring humans Seran had ever come across. Time into the city this, number of bathrooms that, what did you think of the number of windows? WINDOWS FOR FUCKS SAKE! It was as though none of them has read the paperwork stating “sites scheduled for demolition”. He clicked off the phone, rubbing the bridge of his nose in exasperation. It was over now, that was all that mattered. Demolition was scheduled for Monday and construction crews would be in to start work by Friday. He flipped back through the phone, speed dialing another number.
“Jack, the deal is all set, wait about an hour and then head over to the bank to sign. I’m leaving you in charge now, this human bureaucratic bullshit makes my head spin. I’ll stop by construction in a different form later in the week but otherwise I don’t want to be bothered until we’re up and running.”
And with that he was off the hook. Jack basically lived for this kind of work. Seran hated to admit it, but the artificial souls really were better suited to interaction with humans then he was, Jack especially. That man could run a company 24 hours a day and to him every hour would be like opening presents on Christmas. Seran allowed himself a small smile, now that all the boring work was done, he could just sit back and….
“Hello? Anybody in here?”
Eh?
Seran stopped, putting the black portal he had removed from his suit back into the pocket. He leaned backwards, looking through a doorway that gave a sightline to the front of the building. There, looking around the empty building storefront, was a young woman with blonde hair. He raised an eyebrow, someone lost perhaps? Bad directions? No that didn’t make any sense, after all with the exception of the paperwork he basically owned all the buildings in this area, there was no one anywhere around here except for him. Seran straitened, hiding himself from view while he considered responding to the woman’s query. Perhaps she would just wander off again if she thought no one was here. Still, he was somewhat intrigued by her appearance, it was somehow familiar to him. Blonde hair maybe? Who do I know with blonde hair?
Andrea, Ain, Eleanor, Scarlet, Letty, Arashi… wait is Arashi blonde? No his hair is white… its probably dyed I’m counting it.
He counted off on his fingers, then stopped, never having realized how many blondes he knew. He leaned back again to get a better look at the girl. Too slender for Andrea, taller than Ain, Eleanor would never wear something that…. normal, too calm for Scarlet, older than Letty’s vessel, and too female for Arashi… Who the hell was this woman?
As she entered the building, she immediately noticed how empty it felt, like almost void of life. There was a distinct aroma in the area, however, it was well disguised underneath the building's natural musk, paint oils, and dust. She looked at the letter she had received, making sure she was at the right place, only looking up as she heard footsteps approaching. The smell was a bit more concentrated now, as it seemed to have been coming from this male, wearing a red jacket. This was exactly the scene before the main character in her books discovers a dreadful secret that would cause her to run away. Guess there was no point in trying to act coy in this situation... the entire area, not just the building was seemingly void of any people. It was like a forgotten district, quarantined during a bacterial strain outbreak. Regardless, she folded the letter up and kept it in her left hand as her hands dropped to their sides.
I was given instructions to come here, and I really don't know why, I was hoping to find the answers when I arrived. I don't suppose you know anything about this letter.
She waved the parchment in hand a bit. It was likely that he wouldn't really know about it, perhaps it was just an anonymous tip. Either way, she had traversed here, and would at least like to inquire about what this place actually was, and what had happened to the rest of residents here. She stood firmly, unscathed by any reluctance or fear, Mai was pretty tough and was capable of holding her own in nearly any ground, granted she always found ways of turning the tables to her favor.
For some unknown reason, she couldn't shake his scent, why it felt so relative to that of Asuka's aroma. Ever since that night of hardship involving her "boss," she sense of smell was more attuned to that of spiritual beings. She would later witness these monsters flying about, and several individuals fighting these things. She held no particular thought for it, just found it interesting that she had only noticed it the following few days, and noted the frequency of these activities.
What is this place, by the way? Oh, and my name's Mai.
She didn't take a step, rather, she wasn't one to try to intrude in other's personal lives if this is what she had stumbled into.
Seran thought for a moment. Had he instructed anyone to recruit for him lately? Unlikely, after all this project was still entirely a human endeavor at present, no need for bringing people on until the facility was up and running. Perhaps it was another one of these people that had found him through the grapevine of information that was spread around the area of Karakura Town and Naruki City, give one person something that increases the effectiveness by even a little against hollows and shinigami and suddenly your name is muttered in dark corners. He walked quickly up to the girl, snatching the paper she was waving about out of her hand. The room went quiet as he skimmed the note. As expected it was most general vague information; the kind of thing passed around during "I know a guy who knows a guy that can get you what you need" conversation.
"This 'place' is about to be a construction site."
He extended the paper back to the girl and checked the watch on his other hand.
"In about thirty minutes I'll be the one that owns most of this area, but i doubt you came here looking for a construction job."
He pointed to the note he had just handed back to her.
"I'm going to go ahead and assume you don't know who that's from, but even for a fullbringer that isn't something you just come across in the day to day. So why are you here? whay made you follow the instructions given on such a shady note?"
As he began to speak, Mai began to study this individual a little bit. Much as she did when she first encountered Asuka, she noted his stance, his speech pattern, tone, and verbal fluctuations. His choice of words and, of course, the confusion that caused her to take aback her observation. Upon hearing the words full and bringer being brought together, her right hand lifted to her chin, rubbed the right side of her jawline as her left arm crossed over to create a placing for her right elbow to rest upon. He then used the word "Shady" to describe the note, but that didn't throw her off as much as this male using the words "full" and "bringer" and combined it into one word.
Now, it isn't a shady note, I know who wrote it, I just don't know why...
She paused for a moment as she lightly licked her lips. Full-bringer...
Two words that held meanings that would not fit well into a sentence structure if they were proceeding one another, but the way he said it, they way that it rolled off his tongue brought two words that are not usually adjoining, or conjoining for that matter, are suddenly spliced together, creating a new hybrid word, seemingly invented by this individual whose vernacular for the nonsensical terms is reminiscent of a toddler playing with letter blocks. Her eyes returned to their examination. His confidence didn't shy, he brought an unfamiliar presence, yet, she still couldn't shake that scent, that faint hint of cologne coming through from time to time.
You say that as if it was a commonplace term. I can scan all the words in my head, now I have "full" and "bringer..." but the way you combined the two, in such a free form fashion, suggests that this is a term that has been defined; priding myself in the art of the vernacular, I would like to know what the combination of two seemingly random words define.
With just a quick reach for her pencil, she wouldn't write anything down... but she was never able to shake the feeling that she was being watched. Staying in one place for too long could prove to be dangerous. She would await to hear the response before continuing forth with more questions.
Seran raised an eyebrow. He had long since given up changing his vernacular to hide his spiritual nature from the unaware. After all, in most cases human's just assumed he was speaking of something they simply did not understand, and curious questions were easily deflected. Even other spiritual beings newly exposed to this hidden world were generally unperturbed by the use of such language, but this girl was somewhat different. Was she smarter? Or perhaps just more attentive and analytical? Whatever the reason her query piqued his interest, if only because he recognized the glint in her eyes, and the hunger for information that it signified. There was no need to shirk the question.
"The term is used to define one such as yourself: A human being of above average spiritual awareness, specifically one whose mother was exposed to hollowfied matter during pregnancy. This 'spiritual infection' is passed onto the offspring, and generates the unique ability to control and manipulate the souls within inanimate objects, also referred to as 'soul communication'. What causes these mutations within the soul is not fully understood. The word itself comes from the aforementioned being's ability to enhance the souls they manipulate, in a sense bringing their full potential to bear, hence 'Fullbringer'."
He paused for a moment, having noticed the pencil in her hands, and allowing her time should she chose to write down what he was saying.
"The term is also commonly confused with 'Fullbring', a related noun referring to an item of power possessed by a 'Fullbringer'. Usually an object of significance to the individual, a fullbringer can utilize soul communication on this object to achieve far more potent results then they would by using their power normally."
He stopped once more, again giving her time to digest or transcribe the information.
Mai did her best to listen intently. While the individual described the term, while tagging her to be as a "fullbringer" as well, he mentioned things such as Hollow, a term she was already familiar with, and also the ability to communicate with the souls of objects all around her and use them as she sought fit. Once again, this was something already familiar to her, but up until this moment, she didn't have a term to define her powers, or rather, what type of power she possessed. The notebook, the words, the games, it was all due to her Fullbring. Such a singular object possesses many abilities, bringing out her potential, and bringing out such a power.
No, no questions, its all just...
She faltered for a moment, looking down to her side, the realization began kicking in on what it all was about. That organization, Asuka... they were after her gifts. To make matters worse, she gave their leader a full show of what her storybook can do. She held nothing back that night, and as a result, they probably have more information on her from that single game than Asuka's duration staying with Mai.
A few weeks ago, I was hunted down, now, I am realizing what it was all for. I feel like I'm not going to make any sense until I show you. I don't know why, but being lead here, I feel like I can reveal this to you.
Lifting her left arm, her hand opened up, with a flash of green, her notebook appeared. She began to write a few things down, some randomly strung together words, that separately, meant little, but together, did something else entirely.
Upon my notebook lies the ability to create stories, games, and all other things. I can even combine words and create new meanings... why I'm telling you this, well, let's take for example the words Pig and Bank... I am sure you are aware of this, but two separate things, I can manifest them both, but if I add the letter "G" "Y" between them, we get, Piggybank.
She smirked a bit, having a bit of fun with this explanation. Her intention will soon be clear.
The reason why I am telling you this is because I want to play a game... a game that will make my visit worth the travel. I thank you for your information, I think I understand everything completely, but let me offer you something in return. Would you like to place a wager on this game?
And before she could even complete her last question, she would transport them both inside her storybook. Seemingly on top of a rooftop within the Karakura Town city limits. In between them laid a large wooden platform, with a designated spot for each player to stand on across from each other.
Are you familiar with Last Letter - First Letter? Well, this is basically that, except, whatever our word is, will be summoned on the platform before us, and also, the following player will then use a word in which the first letter was the last letter of the word their opponent used last. Here's the kicker, your word has to be able to defeat your opponent's last word. Example, Dog, then Gorilla, then Avalanche. There are several ways to go about this game. You may concede a turn, in which gives you a strike, 3 strikes and you are out. If you care to play, then you may start first, the notebook in your hand is sort of a guide, has rules, and such... by the way, before we begin, what is your name?
Mai finally stopped with her explanation. This potentially could be a fun game... hopefully the individual will finally identify himself.
