Short and petite, Rukia is among one of the shortest among her peers within the Soul Society, as she's easily towered over by people of Yasutora Sado's, or the Arrancar, Nelliel Tu Odelschvank's height. She has pale skin and dark hair, somehow managing to always keep a stray piece of her tapered bangs in between her eyes. She has a purplish eye color which at times looks as if they have some dark-blue in them; and Byakuya told Rukia that she strongly resembles her older sister and his own late wife, Kuchiki Hisana.
PERSONALITY
Although there was nothing she could have done to prevent Kaien's death, Rukia continually feels guilty about what happened to him. Because she immediately killed Kaien without first trying to find a way to help him, Rukia convinces herself that she valued her own life over his. The only solace she is able to find in his death is the belief that she saved him from a Hollow's control. This guilt-ridden attitude carries over to her relationship with Kurosaki Ichigo; when Rukia is taken into custody and Ichigo is gravely wounded in an attempt to save her, she assumes that he dies of his injuries. Feeling that Ichigo's death would have been avoided had she never met him, Rukia loses her reason for living and resigns herself to her sentenced execution.
Because of the amount of time she has spent with Ichigo, Rukia has been able to gain a keen understanding of his inner workings. She is as such always able to help him overcome his own self-doubts, showing him that he can and wants to complete a given task when he himself thinks otherwise. Rukia's relationship with Ichigo is unique, for despite the relatively short amount of time they have known each other, Ichigo can easily confide in her and considers her a true friend because she is encouraging and understands what he is feeling. Rukia's ability to get into others' heads comes into play a number of other times throughout the series, most commonly while in the human world. By playing the part of a poor, innocent girl, Rukia is able to get others to side with her and otherwise focus their scrutiny on an unrelated topic so that her peculiar actions might go unnoticed.
A recurring gag between Rukia and her peers is her drawing ability, or lack thereof. When needing to explain something to someone, most commonly Ichigo, Rukia uses poorly drawn pictures to illustrate the topic. Regardless of what the subject might be, all of her works most closely resemble bears, rabbits, or some other typical woodland creature. Ichigo is always quick to comment on this deficiency, and promptly receives either a beating, or graffiti to the face for bringing it up.
HISTORY
Approximately 150 years ago (Chapter 1, pg. 19), Rukia and her older sister, Hisana, were brought together to Inuzuri (Hanging Dog), the 78th District of Rukongai, after they died in the Human World. Unable to live there while caring for a child, Hisana abandoned Rukia when she was still a baby (Chapter 179, pg. 11). Rukia grew up on her own for a considerable amount of time. One day, Rukia tripped an adult who was chasing Abarai Renji's group of friends, and urged them to follow her to avoid losing the water they had stolen. Rukia joined their group, becoming their spiritual leader, and they lived together as a family (Chapter 98, pg. 6-7).
They all hated Inuzuri and the people there. Rukia exhibited some spiritual power during this time. Ten years after Rukia joined the group, with all of their friends dead, Rukia proposed they become Shinigami and live in Seireitei, noting she had heard it was pretty there. Renji agreed with her. As they were gifted with spiritual powers, they entered the Shin'ō Academy with ease, where they struggled to stand out from those from the noble families (Chapter 98, pg. 7-11). The night before the welcoming ceremony for the new students of the Academy, against Rukia's advice, Renji slept in a tree. The following morning, he fell out of the tree and landed on a headstone where a startled Kira Izuru had been praying, for which Rukia scolded him (Chapter 17, pg. 4-5).
Two months after entering the Academy, Renji, scolding Rukia for still not fitting in, informed her he was going to the Human World for field training to practice konsou for the first time. Rukia complained about this being unfair, but Renji retorted that it is about talent, and that he will get stronger. Rukia said she will show him she is the stronger one, but trailed off (Chapter 17, pg. 9-11). One day, while meeting with Kuchiki Byakuya and his entourage, Renji entered the room to tell her he had passed an important exam. Disappointed with the interruption, the nobles, leaving, told Rukia they were eager to hear her answer. After they had left, Renji asked her what they wanted. She told him they wanted to adopt her into the Kuchiki Clan, having her graduate immediately, and be assigned to the 13th Division, which Renji congratulated her on. Rukia thanked him and left (Chapter 98, pg. 12-16). Rukia was told Byakuya adopted her into the Kuchiki Clan due to her similarity to Hisana, whom he had married (Chapter 179, pg. 10).
Rukia was admitted to the 13th Division without taking their entrance exam. On her first day in the Division, she is shown into a room by a fellow Shinigami, whom she told to treat her like any other new recruit. After he left, she heard him and others talking about her and the favoritism shown to nobles. Rukia was disappointed it was like that there as well. Lieutenant Shiba Kaien entered the room, introduced himself, and scolded her for her weak reply. Rukia was deeply happy she could have a normal relationship with her superior, rather than being treated as special. That evening, Rukia reported to Byakuya her first day had ended peacefully and she did not attain a Seated Officer position, but Byakuya asked her to leave (Chapter 134, pg. 7-11). Later, Rukia, becoming Kotetsu Kiyone's assistant, went on a mission to the Human World (B-part, pilot Chapter).
During her time in the 13th Division, she became friends with Kaien. One day, seeing she was gloomy, Kaien told her as long as she was in his Division, he would stand by her, even if he died. They were interrupted by the drunk Kiyone and Kotsubaki Sentarou, who tried to encourage her (Chapter 134, pg. 12-14). Kaien mentored Rukia, teaching her how to fight. Their first training location was Mount Koifushi of Hokutan, the 3rd District of West Rukongai, where Kaien taught her about the concept of the heart (Chapter 268, pg. 1-15). He was present when she learned her shikai's first two "dances," (Chapter 265, pg. 17-18).
Rukia greatly admired Kaien's wife, 3rd Seat Shiba Miyako (Chapter 134, pg. 14-15), wanting to be like her someday. When Miyako was killed by a Hollow, Rukia, Kaien, and Ukitake went to its lair (Chapter 134, pg. 15-19). She offered to go first in order to scout out its abilities, but Kaien asked to face the Hollow alone. When its special ability destroyed Kaien's Zanpakutou, Rukia attempted to help, but was stopped by Ukitake. He told her Kaien's fight was one of honor rather than a fight for his life. If she were to help, Kaien's life would be saved, but his honor would be forever damaged. After protesting about this, Rukia reluctantly obeyed his order. However, the Hollow, entering Kaien's body, possessed him (Chapter 135, pg. 1-19).
The Hollow attempted to attack Rukia, but Ukitake, blocking it, sent Rukia away as he fought it. Afraid to fight it, she obeyed, but she came back because she wished to help Kaien and was afraid to face her cowardice in future. As it leaped at her, she noted it was no longer Kaien. Unable to bear seeing him like that, she stabbed Kaien. He thanked Rukia and apologized for dragging her into it. Kaien died in Rukia's arms (Chapter 136, pg. 1-18). Rukia brought the corpse to the Shiba family estate, but was afraid to apologize out of guilt from her role in Kaien's death (Chapter 131, pg. 10-11 : Chapter 263, pg. 15).
Forty years after her adoption into the Kuchiki Clan, Kiyone and Sentarou informed Rukia she had been assigned to the Human World. Rukia thought this was a transfer order, which Kiyone denied, reminding her of her previous mission to the Human World, which Rukia still failed to remember. Ukitake told her she was being assigned to Karakura Town for one month, which should be easy for her. Rukia thanked him for telling her. Ukitake asked if she had told Byakuya about it, but she stated he would not wish to be bothered with such a minor thing. Ukitake offered to tell him for her, for which Rukia thanked him (B-part, pilot Chapter).
Eishōhaki (詠唱破棄, "Incantation Abandonment"): is the skill in which a Kidō practitioner skips using a spoken incantation completely, but it drastically weakens the spell. This is applied as a 1-2 tier drop in the spells power depending on ones Kidou mastery, 2 for Beginner up to Advanced, and 1 for Mastered and above. However this also lowers the spells cooldown to match the lowered tier, to a minimum of Tier I.e.g A Tier IV Kidou be cast with Eishohaki as a tier II, its cooldown will also be the same at 0 posts.

SHIKAI APPEARANCE
Sode no Shirayuki's shikai is activated when Rukia holds her Zanpakutō out in front of her and turns it in a circle counter-clockwise. While Rukia is turning it, the entirety of the sword, from hilt to tip, turns white. The tsuba becomes a snowflake-esque circle, and a white silk ribbon forms from the pommel of the hilt. Sode no Shirayuki is often referred to as one of the most beautiful zanpakutou in the entire Soul Society, if not THE most beautiful zanpakutou. When Sode no Shirayuki transforms, its transformation is accompanied by a cool gust of air in all directions.
SHIKAI ABILITIES
Being as it's named "White-sleeved snow," the zanpakutou's affinity is ice. Its techniques are labeled as "dances" by Rukia, and Shiba Kaien (before his death). Aside from ice techniques, Sode no Shirayuki's primary ability is freezing. It can freeze a target from a distance, or be used in an entirely different manner, creating a path or platform of ice in midair. Sode no Shirayuki can be used by Rukia to freeze even the Reishi-created Spirit Weapons of a Quincy, causing it to shatter like glass. The sword itself does not actually spread coldness from it; Sode no Shirayuki brings the body temperature of its wielder to a temperature below freezing, (referred to as Absolute-Zero in the manga). As a result, anything touched while it's wielded, freezes, as the sword itself merely increases overall reach. This power grants Rukia the capability of momentarily dropping her body temperature so low, that she's essentially "dead," though she's controlling her own Reishi, putting herself in a type of Cryo-sleep, essentially. Rukia puts all of the molecules in her body to a halt, preventing any material or substance from entering her body. However, if someone uses an optical attack on her, it will affect her because her nerves are still working. While in this state, the ground below her feet freezes instantly, causing ice quakes, though she can only safely maintain this temperature for a limited amount of time.
Name: 初の舞・月白, "First Dance, White Moon"
Class: Zanpakutou Spirit
Tier:
Type:
Range: Short
Description: The first dance of Sode no Shirayuki is activated vocally by Rukia, as she calls out the name of the dance while holding the sword upside down. The blade glows, and she gestures a lacerating motion when her target is in position. As she does this, she draws a circle with the tip of Sode no Shirayuki. Anything within the area of the circle freezes; and it not only freezes the ground, but everything within the circle's influence, including anything above it in the air, essentially emanating a pillar of light that freezes all within its area of effect. Shortly after being frozen, the target shatters along with the ice, but, if the target winds up outside of the area of effect, the pillar will not shatter.
Name: 次の舞・白漣, "Next Dance, White Ripple"
Class: Zanpakutou Spirit
Tier:
Type:
Range: Short
Description: Rukia, calling out the name of the dance, punctures the ground once, creating a large ice circle, similarly to when her shikai is activated. she then punctures ground again, in front of her, four times in a semi circle. Ice particles begin to flow up from the punctures she made in the ground, and she takes to her battle stance. The ice particles once built up at the tip of Sode no Shirayuki, are released as a large, powerful avalanche of cold air. In essence, the sword flash freezes whatever it comes into contact with, encasing it in ice.
Name: 参の舞・白刀, "Third Dance, White Sword"
Class: Zanpakutou Spirit
Tier:
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Description: Rukia activates the third dance vocally, as she does with the aforementioned dances; enabling her to gather all the moisture in the air, specifically to the tip of Sode no Shirayuki, creating a blade of ice. From this point forward, Sode no Shirayuki's length can be augmented. After piercing its target, the blade continues freeze any surrounding objects in the immediate vicinity of the target.
Name: 樹白, "White Tree"
Class: Zanpakutou Spirit
Tier:
Type:
Range: Long
Description: Rukia impales the ground with Sode no Shirayuki, forming a trail of ice in the direction of her target, like the roots of a tree. The ice then freezes the target from the base up, continuing the freezing process as it transforms the target into ice.
